Charles Barkley says Spurs players were the targets of sarcasm that they were the ‘stupidest team’

Charles Barkley doubled down on his criticism of the San Antonio Spurs after they blew a 29-point lead against the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, but he made it clear who he was talking about.

Barkley called the Spurs “the stupidest basketball team in the history of civilization” during a postgame on Inside the NBA after the Knicks won 107-106, giving New York a 3-1 series lead.

“That was the most mismanaged, stupidest basketball game,” Barkley said. “When you blow a 29-point lead, the other team has to help you out. The San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game by doing some of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.”

On the pregame show before Game 5, Barkley said he received calls from several NBA coaches, then made it clear who he was angry at.

Relive the Knicks’ glorious NBA title with a new book

“When I said the other day, ‘That was some really crappy basketball,’ I was talking about the players,” Barkley said. “I want to make it clear that I’m not talking about coach (Mitch Johnson).”

Johnson and his players were criticized for their response in the second half, particularly for poor shot selection and lack of awareness late in the game.

NBC’s latest poll shows President Trump’s approval rating at lowest point in second term

A new NBC News poll released on June 14 finds that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has hit its lowest point in his second term.

As the Democratic Party gains the upper hand heading into the November midterm elections, President Donald Trump’s approval rating has hit its lowest point in his second term, according to the latest NBC News poll.

The poll, released on June 14, Trump’s 80th birthday, shows that the president’s approval rating among American adults currently stands at 39%, with five months until the crucial midterm elections. The results show President Trump’s approval rating in the NBC News poll is at its lowest since his first term.

The outlet tracked similar results among registered voters in July 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s racial tally following the killing of George Floyd.

According to a June 3-8 Reuters/Ipsos poll, Trump’s approval rating among rural Americans also hit a record low of 50% in June, compared to 60% in February 2025, the month after Trump was sworn in as president for the second time.

Rural voters were at the heart of Trump’s White House victories in 2016 and 2024. Rural voters say the president’s declining approval ratings in rural areas are due to disapproval of his handling of the U.S. economy and cost of living, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling data.

The NBC/Reuters poll comes amid uncertainty for the nation’s economy, as Americans struggle with soaring prices for gasoline and groceries due in part to the Iran war, which President Trump has said could end on June 14.

The results also come as Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers, with Democrats hoping to regain a majority in both chambers.

The NBC poll, sponsored by More Perfect, a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to promoting and preserving democracy, also found that 49% of registered voters say they want to see Democrats control Congress in the midterm elections. The poll found that while 44% of those surveyed want Republican control of Congress, 7% of participants remain unsure.

Republican approval ratings have also declined since March, when 88% of Republicans approved of Trump’s inauguration, but the majority of party voters still support the president. According to the NBC poll, 82% of Republicans approve of his performance as president, and 58% say they “strongly” approve of him. In March, 63% strongly supported it.

“It’s a volatile number for Republicans, but it’s not a devastating number,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff. McInturf of Public Opinion Strategies conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt.

Horwitt told NBC News that Democrats are “still in a very good position to win seats, despite redistricting.”

The NBC poll was conducted from May 29 to June 7 among 2,400 registered voters. The margin of error is +/- 2 percentage points.

In Disney tradition, every day is Flag Day.

0

play

Every year on Flag Day, America commemorates the adoption of the American flag and celebrates what it stands for, and it’s celebrated every day at Walt Disney World.

Barring inclement weather, every day at 5 p.m., Magic Kingdom’s Honor Guard retrieves the flag waving over Main Street, USA, in a ceremonial ceremony to prevent guests from marching.

The Flag Retreat follows the formal end-of-day flag lowerings held at U.S. military bases around the world, but with added Disney touches such as Barbershop’s Dapper Dans Quartet, Main Street Philharmonic Band, and recognizing guests who have served in the military.

Some guests, who are accustomed to ceremonies, actively participate in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the national anthem. Even though it’s been a staple at the resort since it opened, some people are surprised when they see it for the first time. The Disneyland tradition is even older, but done differently.

Here’s what guests need to know about Flag Retreat at Disney World.

unexpected honor

Each day, a different U.S. military member or veteran is invited to the flag retreat to represent that day’s military. Typically, Cast Members identify unsuspecting military members or veterans among park guests during the day, but on Veterans Day, a representative is chosen from among Cast Members who have served in the military.

Steven Jesselinck, a Navy veteran and police officer from West Monroe, Louisiana, was surprised when he was selected for a family trip in late May. As his loved ones and other guests looked on, he stood front and center on the flagpole as the flag was lowered, folded and presented to him.

“It felt like going back in time a little bit,” he said. “It just gives you pride.”

The experience reminded him of registering for the military in “the heart of 9/11,” returning to base, and passing through the Atlanta airport on his way home from deployment. “An elderly person in a wheelchair physically stood up just to hug me and welcome me home and thank me for my service. And it melted my heart,” he recalled.

“We’re not looking for appreciation. We’re not looking for anything like that. But we know there are a lot of people who care about what we do, and they care a lot,” Jesselinck said. “Disney welcomes millions of guests from all over the world each year, so it’s great to see veterans recognized at retirement ceremonies.”

George Denby was recognized at a previous Flag Retreat. He retired from the Air Force, went on to work for the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and currently manages the Orlando Fisher House. The Orlando Fisher House provides free lodging for military and veteran families while their loved ones receive treatment at the Orlando VA Medical Center.

“Words can’t describe how amazing it felt,” he recalls. “It just so happened that my two oldest grandsons were visiting from New Mexico. Their father is also a retired Air Force member, and he just retired last year. They’re military children, so to be able to do that and have it displayed in front of them was a big deal for me.”

Denby joked that he had earned several honors during his 20 years in the military, but said with a laugh, “Nothing like that. I’ve never been in a parade or walked down Main Street myself.”

welcome back

Military representatives of the day are recognized both during and after the retreat of the flag. They then carry the folded flag alongside a guard of honor onto Main Street and turn onto a side street in a silhouette cart where they return the flag. Guests and cast members will also line up to personally thank and shake hands with military personnel and veterans.

“They really make it feel like it’s a really big deal, and it was,” Denby said.

Eileen Underwood leads the Magic Kingdom security team that conducts the Flag Retreat. She was also an Army veteran and her father, husband and sons were also veterans. She tries to get as many flags back as possible and says she’ll never forget the reaction of one Vietnam veteran who was honored.

“A customer there yelled at this guy, ‘Welcome home,’ and he completely lost it,” she recalled. She said the veteran told her, “‘No one has ever said that to me except my family. Welcome home.'” Those two words he had always wanted to hear… they were really, really special. ”

Disney can’t identify every military member or veteran they visit, but they want everyone to know, “We appreciate you. We value you. You mean so much to us.”

In addition to the flag evacuation ceremony, Disney is offering discounts on park tickets to active U.S. military and veterans. Military personnel, veterans and others, including former prisoners of war and veterans with service-related disabilities, are also eligible to stay at the Department of Defense’s Shades of Green Resort on Disney World property for a fee.

long history

“Celebrating those who serve is a core value at Disney, dating back to our founders’ service to our country,” said Cappy Schlett, a Navy veteran and senior manager of public affairs for the Disney Experience.

All three of Walt Disney’s brothers served in the military during World War I, including Roy Disney, who served in the Navy and became Walt’s business partner. Walt was too young to enlist in the military himself during the war, but he still lied about his age and enlisted in the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in order to qualify for military service.

“Salute to that service begins with admiration and has continued for more than 100 years at the Walt Disney Company,” Schlett said.

Not even park closures due to the pandemic will get in the way.

“We decided to leave every morning when the park was completely empty and the only sound was the birds. Our entire team went to the flag every day, hoisted the flag, and took it down at night, which is exactly what we did before coronavirus,” Underwood said.

“It was a time of great uncertainty,” she added. “For those brief moments of ups and downs, it gave me hope and determination that no matter what happens, we will all come together and get through this.”

Denby said he hopes Disney continues the tradition forever.

Donald Trump praises New York Knicks’ victory

President Donald Trump praised the New York Knicks for their first championship in more than 50 years. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

play

President Donald Trump praised the New York Knicks for winning their first NBA championship in more than 50 years.

After the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, ending a cinematic 4-1 series, President Trump congratulated owner Jim Dolan and the newly crowned NBA champions.

“It’s been a great year, but even more so were the incredible playoff wins we all witnessed, especially the last four games, which may be the best in basketball history,” President Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, June 14.

The last time New York won the NBA Finals was in 1973, three years after their first championship in 1970. Trump, who was known as a New York businessman before taking the White House, is a longtime fan of the city’s popular NBA franchise.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump congratulated point guard Jalen Brunson and other Knicks players for scoring a game-high 45 points.

“Tonight, another superstar was born,” President Trump said. “His name is Jalen Brunson. We also have Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and the great Patriot Mitchell Robinson! Let’s make America great again!”

Trump attended Game 3 of the Finals in New York, the Knicks’ only loss of the series, as a guest of franchise owner James Dolan.

Trump himself made history as the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game in person. The president’s appearance was met with boos from those in the stands during the national anthem, but Trump later told reporters, “I think it was mostly cheers. It was loud, it was enthusiastic.”

President Trump, who turns 80 on June 14, has focused his second term on sports. He is scheduled to host a UFC bout on the South Lawn of the White House on his birthday, titled “UFC Freedom 250,” which has been highly anticipated by conservatives and panned by liberal critics. Trump also said the United States and Iran could reach a deal on his birthday to end a four-month war that has caused gasoline prices to soar across the United States.

Knicks beat Spurs again to win NBA title: Key points from Game 5

0

play

There’s no denying the New York Knicks.

They self-destructed again in the first quarter. Once again they dug a hole for themselves. And the Knicks once again came back from behind by double digits to pull off an improbable victory, this time on Saturday, June 13th, to clinch their first NBA championship in 53 years.

The Knicks trailed by 10 points with 8:21 left in the fourth quarter, but went on a 21-7 run to take one more game from the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, and sit atop the NBA.

Knicks All-Star Jalen Brunson scored 45 points on 14-of-27 shooting, including 13-of-15 from the line, in the NBA Finals and volunteered for New York to be named NBA Finals MVP. In comparison, Brunson’s remaining teammates scored 49 points.

New book saves the Knicks’ championship run

This is New York’s third NBA title and first since 1973.

Here are the takeaways from Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

Jalen Brunson goes down as one of the game’s greatest players

Brunson scored nearly half (47.9%) of New York’s points in the NBA Finals game. He tied Michael Jordan for the most championship games in Finals history.

Brunson, 29, is a three-time All-Star, a three-time All-NBA selection, and currently holds championship and NBA Finals Most Valuable Player awards.

Brunson faced criticism that his size and style of play prevented him from being a leader on a championship team. Not only did he shatter that narrative, but the Knicks established themselves as the force behind Brunson and his team-friendly contract. All of this only increases the chances that the Knicks remain solid title contenders for years to come.

“I said it, and listen to me, he’s a top-three MVP candidate,” Knicks coach Mike Brown told reporters after the game. “Everybody just kind of says his name. They don’t take it seriously enough. People say he’s too small. People say he’s a 1B or 2B or something. They say he’s a 1B or 2B or something.”

“He’s a hell of a 1A. He’s an MVP candidate. And I hope you guys tonight — and I’m talking more to the media than the fans, but I hope you all recognize this guy for what he is because he’s the A1 MVP. He’s what he is.”

Spurs’ bankruptcy remains a major concern for this year and beyond.

San Antonio is a young team, and the NBA Finals is unlike any other in basketball. Expect some nerves. But San Antonio’s inability to close out games proved to be a fatal flaw.

The Spurs held a double-digit lead at some point in the fourth quarter of this series. Within the first two minutes of each game, they were in the lead or at least tied at some point. San Antonio was eliminated in the finals in five games.

The problem throughout the series was offense. While the Knicks increased their defensive intensity late in the game, the Spurs simply couldn’t find a way to generate any signs of consistent offense.

For the second straight game, the Spurs held a double-digit lead midway through the fourth quarter, only to completely collapse offensively.

San Antonio scored just seven points in the final 8:21 of the game, going just 3-of-17 (17.6%) in that span.

Victor Wembaneyama is a special player, but he struggled late in the game as New York tried to squeeze in his shot. More of the blame should be on guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who were unable to penetrate New York’s defense and create opportunities for their teammates.

Wenbanyama said after the match, “Our stint of dominance is absolute.” “For most of the series, we were completely in the lead. But we can’t have these ups and downs because our mistakes and mistakes are severely punished. That’s about it. Ups and downs are fine. Ups and downs are what cost us.”

This could be a learning experience, and the Spurs should grow from this, but coach Mitch Johnson will also need to use this experience to find ways to slow things down when he gets an avalanche from opposing teams. Johnson will also need to find a way to facilitate the offense.

It’s notable that the Knicks won the series despite a slow start

The Knicks lost everything in the first quarter in the Finals. And it wasn’t just that they started from an early hole, what stood out was how poor and inefficient they were in the first period.

On Saturday night, New York missed its first five shot attempts in the first quarter and shot just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from the field. The Knicks committed six turnovers (which gave San Antonio a seven-point lead) and missed all eight attempts in the paint.

Sure, Victor Wembaneyama lurking in the paint changed a lot of the look, but the slow start wasn’t out of the ordinary for the Knicks. They were practically a guarantee.

New York’s total point differential in the first period of the NBA Finals was -57. In each of the past three games, New York has finished the first game with a double-digit deficit.

Frankly, New York is very fortunate that the young Spurs are still learning the effort and intensity required to shut out teams. Because a first quarter like this probably should have been disqualified from the championship.

At this point, it’s clear that Mitch Johnson should have played Dylan Harper and not De’Aaron Fox.

In some cases, a player simply has a bad series.

Knicks forward Mikal Bridges was terrible in the first round before blowing up in the conference semifinals and conference finals.

Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox is in for a tough final. One game after making a critical mental error in the final seconds of Game 4 and helping the Knicks pull off a record 29-point comeback, Fox struggled again Saturday night.

He scored just 7 points on 3-of-15 shooting. Fox did have five assists and helped settle the offense with his ball handling, but the reality is that rookie Dylan Harper has him ahead of him. And it’s not even particularly close.

Harper was particularly active in the third quarter, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting during the period. The explosion occurred as the Spurs tried to create some cushion against New York heading into the fourth inning. It wasn’t enough, but he was the first player to get to the rim.

What makes Harper particularly dangerous is that he is too relentless and unafraid to attack the paint and get close to the rim. The Spurs sometimes settle for too many jumpers, especially 3-pointers, in this series. Harper offset that by scoring a team-high 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting.

San Antonio will have to make a decision regarding Fox, who signed a four-year max extension worth $228.6 million, keeping him with the team through 2029-30.

This meant that huge amounts of money were invested in players who more or less disappeared, especially towards the end of the game.

Comcast agrees to $117.5 million settlement related to Xfinity data breach

play

Comcast has agreed to pay $117.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from a cybersecurity breach that exposed the personal information of millions of Xfinity customers in October 2023.

The complaint alleges that Comcast “failed to adequately protect personal information” and had “insufficient data security.” The carrier denied any wrongdoing.

In a notice, Comcast advised customers that the personal information in the data breach included usernames, passwords, contact information, dates of birth, and the last four digits of social security numbers.

According to Comcast’s settlement website, the settlement is now open for claims, and current or former customers who received a violation notice from Comcast in December 2023 may be eligible for payment.

Here’s what you need to know about settlement funds, including who is eligible, how much to expect to pay, and when payments will be made.

Who is eligible to receive Comcast’s settlement payments?

The money is set aside for people whose personal information was accessed during a data breach in 2023, according to the settlement website. Consumers who were notified of the breach in December 2023 are eligible for the settlement.

Not all Comcast customers can automatically submit a payment request.

How much is Comcast’s settlement?

Eligible individuals may submit a claim for reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket costs or lost time. Payment amount is up to $10,000.

This number is influenced by the total amount of the settlement and the number of customers who filed affected claims. Valid claims for out-of-pocket losses must be submitted by August 14th.

If affected consumers choose not to go through the process of proving their out-of-pocket loss or loss of time, they can instead opt for a $50 cash payment. However, this amount may also change depending on the total number of claimants.

The deadline to request alternative cash payments is also August 14th.

When will the payment be issued?

A final approval hearing is scheduled for July 7, with payments to be made after that.

Grieving at work is hard work. Here’s how you can do it easily

0

play

In April, Stephen Woods’ son-in-law, Ryan Jennings, was swimming with his two older children in Florida during a family vacation when he was caught in a rip current and pulled up. He breathed his last while safely landing his children.

His loss was a double blow to Woods. For the past five years, Mr. Jennings worked as senior vice president of customer service for Mr. Woods’ medical health marketing company in Maine.

“When you lose someone you thought was your son, someone you thought was a leader in your business, you have families who are grieving, there are employees who are grieving, and there are customers who are grieving,” Woods said.

But business had to go on. “Obviously if you have contracts, employees and a budget, it takes time to realize the loss, but business is people’s livelihoods and it’s a legal obligation, and you can’t just quit,” Woods said. “You can’t take a few weeks or months off and just unplug.”

Rebecca Feinroth, a certified grief support specialist, founder of Grieve Leave and host of the “Grief’d Up” podcast, said employers like Woods are on the front lines of grief every day in the United States due to death and loss.

But there are too many things missing. Few organizations can offer more than a kind word or a referral to an employee assistance program, Feingros said.

Bereavement leave is not long enough and grieving employees receive too little support when they return to work. result? Billions of people have been lost to unsupported grief: decreased productivity, decreased morale and job satisfaction, increased absenteeism, and increased turnover.

“It’s the boss who has to disclose that someone has passed away. You’re going to have to tell the boss that you’re going to take some time off,” Feingross said. “How your boss reacts to that, how they support you or not support you, will be remembered forever.”

get time to grieve

Only five states have laws requiring people to take time off when a loved one dies: California, Illinois, Oregon, Maryland, and Washington. Employees everywhere rely on the goodwill of their bosses.

Bereavement leave is the most popular type of paid family leave, with nine out of 10 employers extending it, but it is only granted for three days and is often limited to the death of a close family member.

Ron Gula, co-founder and CEO of bereavement firm Empathy, said bereavement policies have traditionally been designed to give employees a few days to make funeral and other arrangements, but have done little to address the trauma and grief that lingers beyond the first few days.

She said employers are starting to realize that employees need additional support and more time to grieve.

“Expanding our existing bereavement leave policy will go a long way in supporting our employees when they need it most,” Mr Gula said.

John Hyman, head of employment and labor practice at Wickens Herzer Panza, advises clients to rely on individual administrators and work out arrangements on a case-by-case basis.

“Grief doesn’t happen on a schedule, and a strict three-day bereavement policy applied without discretion is a good way to lose good employees,” Hyman said. “Employers who can handle these moments well earn true loyalty. Employers who don’t tend to find that out in exit interviews.

Creating a culture of “communicating sadness”

Having a generous bereavement policy isn’t enough, says Sarah Kagan, founder of Kelia Grief Coaching. The culture surrounding grief must also change.

Employers need to foster a “grief-aware” culture that recognizes grief as a natural response to loss and responds to the different needs of people as they return to work.

“Grief in the workplace is now treated like a blip. If you have a grieving incident and take bereavement leave, it may take a week for people to notice you and treat you kindly, and then it’s back to business as usual,” she said.

break the silence: Business as usual can be tough for people who are grieving. In her book, “Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy,” former Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg wrote about her husband, Survey Monkey CEO Dave Goldberg, who died unexpectedly in 2015, she described grief as the elephant in the room. She felt even more alone because no one asked her how she was feeling.

problem? Managers often don’t know how to support their employees. That’s why at Gura, we recommend training on how to have these sensitive conversations.

“Training managers to check in with compassion, provide ongoing support, and be flexible with workloads and expectations during adjustment periods” can make a big difference, he said.

“One of the most supportive things a manager can do is say, ‘I trust you to tell me what you need right now, and we’ll figure it out together,'” Feingross said.

leave room for sadness. People are upset when returning to work after a loss. “Even something as simple as reading the obituary of the person who died and knowing their name and a little bit of information about them that helps humanize the loss of an employee can go a long way,” Kagan said.

Talk openly about your grief, Feinroth said. Check in and ask, “How are you feeling today?” instead of “Are you okay?” “This gives you more room to answer honestly without putting pressure on someone to say, ‘Okay,'” Feingross says.

Recognize your “sadness brain.” When someone is sad, their work performance may suffer. You may have difficulty concentrating, your mind may become foggy, and your memory may fade. You may become withdrawn or irritable. You might struggle with daily tasks, miss deadlines, or even miss work for days at a time. But your employees aren’t slacking off, Kagan said. It’s the brain of sadness.

“As a manager, you think they’re not engaged. They’re checked out. They’re not interested in this job,” she said. “The employee is sitting here thinking, ‘I really miss them. I have to do all the estate processing. I’m really distracted by the grief.’ But they never tell their employer.”

Kagan said employees should have clear conversations that get to the heart of where they are on their grief journey.

“You might say, ‘What’s occupying your head space right now?’ Or, ‘What’s your mental bandwidth like this week?’ Or, ‘How much capacity do you need to connect right now?'” she said. “This gives employers the opportunity to truly understand what is going on with their employees.”

be flexible. Grief is different for everyone. Some people may need to work more, and some may need to work less. Offer a flexible or part-time schedule, or stagger your return to work. Allow employees to start work later or leave work earlier.

Adjust your workload, extend deadlines, and make temporary changes to assignments and projects. Maybe you want to spend your day at a meeting or in a quiet part of the office without using your desk.

Remember that grief is not linear, and emotional triggers can appear unexpectedly, Feinroth said.

“Grief doesn’t happen on a calendar,” she says. “Some people may seem ‘fine’ one week, then crumble the next as they hit a milestone or anniversary.” “That’s how grief works. Flexibility needs to be maintained continuously, not just immediately after a loss.”

Books are expensive now. The reason is more complicated than you think

As book prices rise, the industry is forced to balance accessibility, profitability, and discoverability.

play

  • Although book prices are rising, historically they have not kept pace with inflation as much as other goods.
  • Publishers receive a percentage of the book’s cover price, minus retail, distribution, and other costs.
  • The market may be splitting between high-end collector’s editions and more accessible, lower-priced paperbacks.

From Proposal to Publication is a series that takes readers behind the curtain of modern publishing as a business.

I already know what my novel will cost before it’s published next year.

Long before readers decide whether to buy How to Kill a Chupacabra, the publisher has already decided on the back cover number.

To some readers, this number may seem surprisingly high.

Hardcovers that once seemed to hover around $20 now routinely cost over $30. I recently spent $65 on just two books. Special editions may also be more expensive. At the same time, consumers are weighing these purchases against Netflix subscriptions, Spotify memberships, and an endless supply of free content online. According to a recent study from the Authors Guild, only 36% of people who read a book or listened to an audiobook in the last month bought a new book (or bought it through a subscription). Nearly two-thirds did not purchase a new book.

So, are book prices actually going up?

The (unsatisfactory) answer is both yes and no.

Consumer prices have increased by about 25% since 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But publishing executives say book prices have resisted similar inflationary pressures affecting nearly every other industry for years.

“Historically, books have not kept up with inflation,” said Keith Riegert, president of Stable Book Group. He argues that the roots of today’s pricing can be traced back to the rise of e-books. Consumer perceptions of book prices have changed as publishers experiment with $9.99 and even $2.99 digital versions.

“What e-books have done is artificially depress the value of books,” he told USA TODAY.

Its impact rippled through the industry. The mass-market paperback, once a low-cost gateway to reading, has all but disappeared. Despite rising production costs, paperback and hardcover prices remained relatively stagnant for many years.

According to research by the American Booksellers Association, book prices have risen slightly in recent years, but historically they have not kept pace with inflation and have risen much more slowly than other goods and services.

“For the first time in decades, retail prices for books have started to rise due to supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19,” Riegert added.

But readers don’t expect sticker shock.

Daniel Green, author of “Neon Ghost” and one of YouTube’s biggest book producers, said he could no longer ignore the issue as his friends started turning down his recommendations.

“They’re like, well, that’s over $30. I can’t do that,” Green told USA TODAY. “Then I found out the paperback was still $23. And I thought that was crazy.”

Alison Hill, CEO of the ABA, acknowledged that value recognition can be difficult because book buyers “are not questioning the value of a book, but are managing their budgets in the face of other rising costs, such as groceries, insurance, and gas.”

For Greene, there’s also the concern that fewer opportunities for authors means higher prices.

“I used to go and buy five books. Three by authors I didn’t know and two by authors I liked. Now I might go and buy one or two,” Green said. “This is scary for the industry as a whole because it reduces the discoverability of new authors.”

Another challenge, industry leaders say, is that readers often assume that publishers have most of the money.

it’s not. There is no blank space at all.

For a $20 book, the retailer typically takes 50% to 60% of the cover price, and then the publisher pays for distribution, shipping, warehousing, printing, returns, and author royalties.

“A $20 book ends up being a couple of dollars in profit for the publisher,” Riegert said.

These economics are made even more difficult because the publishing industry still operates on a return system that dates back to the Great Depression. Booksellers can usually return unsold inventory to publishers for refunds or credits, but this also affects pricing calculations.

meet reader behavior

Executives at Bindery Books, an influencer-driven publisher founded in 2023 and built around online community and reader engagement, say they think about pricing differently.

“So we’re publishing the industry’s paperback originals, not leading with hardcover,” said Meghan Harvey, co-founder and president of Bindery.

She told USA TODAY that hardcovers remain attractive, but are increasingly serving as a premium product. “Hardcovers are kind of a luxury item, and they cost $35 each.”

Bindery instead focuses on low-priced paperbacks because its business model relies on getting books into the hands of as many readers as possible.

Rachel Reid and Casey McQuiston choose dream cast for movie adaptation

BookCon 2026 authors reveal their dream actors to cast in book-to-movie adaptations.

“We’re trying to reach as many people as possible and sell as many books as possible,” Harvey said.

Matt Kay, co-founder and CEO of Bindery, believes this is especially important for young readers.

“I think a lot of our readers, especially our younger readers, are feeling financially insecure,” Kaye said. “It’s very important to us that we make our e-books and paperbacks affordable in order to generate as much social word-of-mouth as possible.”

Industry pricing pressures are not limited to paper and printing.

Publishers must also respond to changing consumer behaviors, rising shipping costs, and a fierce attention economy.

Green argues that books are increasingly competing with entertainment options that did not exist in previous generations. “Books are now more focused, harder for people to read, and more expensive. And all movies and TV shows are more available than ever before.”

He noted that unlike streaming, books need to capture consumers’ attention.

Madeline McIntosh, founder and CEO of Authors Equity and former CEO of Penguin Random House US, argues that today’s publishing landscape is less about creating books and more about persuading people to pay attention.

“If I could wave a wand, it wouldn’t be to solve the problems within the industry,” McIntosh said. “This is a frustration shared by anyone who creates content.”

Increasingly, this competition pits books against all other forms of entertainment, not just books. Publishers are competing with TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, streaming services and video games.

“You can’t sell something to people by telling them it’s good for you,” McIntosh says. “You have to sell something by telling people it’s fun, interesting, and moving.”

But despite these challenges, none of the publishing executives I spoke to think readers are abandoning books. In fact, many argue that the opposite is happening.

Books as physical expressions of individuality

Kay points to the continued growth of physical bookstores and the rise of the BookTok community, which has turned novels into cultural artifacts.

“Books are like seeds of culture, or source code,” he says.

For young readers who have grown up entirely online, physical books are valuable tangible objects separate from screens.

Riegert sees a similar trend emerging.

“We’re in this analog revolution where having time not in front of a screen is a luxury,” he said.

He believes this change will result in a two-track publishing market. On one side, there is a collector’s deluxe edition with sprayed edges, special cover. On the other end are low-cost paperbacks and print-on-demand books aimed at maintaining accessibility.

“The market really seems to be split into two different sides,” Riegert added. “There’s the luxury side and then there’s the entry point side to that.”

Nevertheless, as stated by Riegert, Harvey, and Kaye, the current pricing structure is likely to remain in place for some time.

Greene worries that rising prices and the disappearance of mass-market paperbacks could create a future in which fewer readers will take a chance on unknown authors.

“The cheapest option for people who are struggling to buy is to replace them with options they don’t even own,” he said, referring to e-books. “I can’t pass that on to my kids.”

But, as Riegert says, “Even if $24 for a new[book]feels expensive, you could potentially get weeks’ worth of enjoyment out of it.”

And unlike streaming shows that disappear from your catalog overnight, physical books remain yours.

Hunter Biden and stepmother Jill express their opinions through social media, book

play

On June 3, 2024, Hunter Biden sat in court facing federal firearms charges. His stepmother, former first lady Jill Biden, sat in the front row to show her support. It was her birthday.

He did not take the stand. Unlike some family members, the first lady also did not testify.

But two years later, it turns out both former President Joe Biden’s son and the first lady have a lot to say, and the internet has come for it.

Since first posting to X on May 19th, Hunter Biden has amassed more than 780,000 followers in just a few weeks.

The post, pinned to his profile, reads, “I’m Hunter Biden. You’ve never actually heard from me.” Meanwhile, Jill Biden’s memoir, View from the East Wing, was released on the eve of her birthday and topped the New York Times bestseller list.

Hunter Biden talks about Trump family and addiction

Hunter Biden, 56, was the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a crime, and was pardoned by his father a month before Joe Biden left office. He pleaded guilty to tax violations and was convicted of firearms-related charges.

When the X user said, “I’m sure you’re grateful for that pardon,” Hunter simply replied, “I’m sure you are.”

In X, he faced off against President Donald Trump, who introduced the viral “Where’s the Hunter?” During his 2019 campaign speech, he made a series of attacks to ridicule his business dealings in China and Ukraine. (The Trump campaign also sold T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase.) The younger Biden has questioned Trump’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, and their business operations. He is harshly critical of journalists.

But the post that got the most reaction about X was about his journey through recovery from crack cocaine addiction.

“Been clean and sober for almost 7 years. Not a victory lap. Just a fact. To those who are fighting right now: Be quiet. It’s not easy. Be quiet. When you get quiet, you see who you really are. That’s the part they can’t take away from you,” he said in his first post on the subject.

Reactions came from people across the political spectrum.

User ThePolitcialBlonde wrote, “We’re on opposite ends of the political spectrum, @HunterBiden.” “But as someone who lost a baby brother to heroin, I’ve seen firsthand how hard it can be. Well done. Well done for surviving.”

Some urged Biden to run for president. An X user asked what the slogan of the campaign would be.

“Let’s have another crack at Biden,” he replied.

Jill Biden wrote in her book that she regrets not discussing her addiction publicly when she was first lady, saying it was painful to even say the words.

While recording the audiobook, she says she had a hard time saying the line, “My son was a drug addict,” when she had to say it.

“It hurts,” she said in an interview on NBC’s “TODAY.” “I wish I had spoken out about my addiction, but going through it was really painful.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper doubts Jill Biden

CNN host Jake Tapper, who moderated the disastrous 2024 debate that ruined Biden’s reelection bid, called Jill Biden the “queen of inaction” in a video post shortly after her book was released on June 2.

Tapper disputed the former first lady’s assertion that if her husband had shown cognitive impairment, she and the president’s staff would not have hesitated to say so.

“It’s all very hard to believe, if not outright false,” Tapper said, based on behind-the-scenes interviews he gave.

In a June 3 post on X, Hunter Biden accused Tapper of ignoring the Trump family’s business and attacking Jill Biden.

“So let me be clear: Jake Tapper is focused on attacking my mother,” Hunter Biden wrote. “Jared and Ivanka are building a private island paradise on a reserve in Albania. Don Jr. is married to Epstein’s banker’s daughter, and a startup backed by his fund just secured a record $620 million loan from the Department of Defense. Eric is taking an Israeli drone company public for $1.5 billion in the middle of a war with Iran that no one wanted,” he wrote.

In another post, Biden mocked Tapper, likening him to the ignorant newscaster in the movie “Anchorman” who doesn’t pay attention to Trump’s frequent medical checkups and instead focuses on his mother.

“Mr. Trump has not been seen in public in eight days. This was after an unscheduled hospital visit because Mr. Trump ‘likes to get tested.'” Thankfully, Jake Tapper (as I like to call him – his contemporary Brick Tamland) is on the case, searching for clues in a book about his mother’s experience as first lady four years ago, he wrote.

President Trump was asked by Fox reporter Peter Doocy last week how he thought Hunter Biden would do in the 2028 Democratic primary.

In response, President Trump said, “The past has everything to do with winning elections.”

Biden quickly responded, “Wait…did I just say he had a checkered past? I have 28 felonies, six bankruptcies, and Epstein’s bromance doesn’t come close to his checkered past.”

He then turned his fire on Doocy, whom he described as a MAGA whisperer, writing, “I want @peterdouchey to ask the president when he gets his Hunter T-shirt royalty check. It’s been 4 years now and he keeps saying the check is in the mail.”

As for his presidential ambitions, Biden downplayed them when California Governor Gavin Newsom, widely considered the top 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, jokingly introduced Biden as “2028 Presidential Candidate Hunter Biden” on a June 12 podcast.

“Here’s the deal: I’m running, but only as vice president, because the truth of the matter is it’s much cooler in the vice president’s office. It’s a much easier job,” he said.

But back to X, he left behind a cryptic note.

“Let me just say…no Democrat has won the White House this century without electing Biden,” he wrote.

Bruce Springsteen: “No one insults Trump more than this celebrity”

Bruce Springsteen accepted the Social Justice Award at the Tribeca Festival, where he spoke candidly about anti-ICE protesters and the Trump administration.

play

NEW YORK – If you’re hoping for a ticket to Bruce Springsteen’s presidency in 2028, don’t hold your breath.

On June 13, during a panel discussion at the Tribeca Festival, where Springsteen was honored with the Harry Belafonte Voice for Social Justice Award, the famously outspoken rock icon dismissed the idea that he might one day run for political office.

The suggestion came during a conversation with Bono, who admitted he sometimes worries that people on the left are losing touch with the working class. The U2 frontman asked Springsteen if he thought his politics would alienate his fan base.

“I don’t know,” Springsteen said. “There’s a classic saying: ‘Well, which side are you on?’ You have to state your position, follow your beliefs, and have faith that it will be understood by your fellow citizens. You have to believe that there are debates in America, and that it is possible to find some common ground. Leaders, I don’t know if we have the ability at this moment to go out and speak to all of our people…”

“You!” someone shouted from the audience, and the theater erupted into thunderous applause.

“No,” Springsteen said with a smile and a shrug. “At best, I’m a concerned citizen. I sing and hope for the best.”

Bruce Springsteen dedicates social justice award to anti-ICE protesters

During a roughly 30-minute conversation, Springsteen and Bono talked about using their platforms for change.

Now, Springsteen said, “I’m pissed and angry, but for the past 50 years, we’ve put together a band that was created for difficult times like this.” “I put together a huge body of work that I created through difficult times, and I always sang for those moments.”

The 20-time Grammy winner also said he believes America can overcome this divisive era.

People must recognize “the common humanity and dignity of each other,” Springsteen said. “There is clearly a lack of that supply from the very top of government down at the moment.”

Late last month, Springsteen wrapped up his “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour in the United States. Earlier this year, he released a protest song, “Streets of Minneapolis,” in response to the increasingly violent federal crackdown on immigrants in the United States. On stage at Tribeca, Springsteen dedicated his Voices for Social Justice award to protesters across the country. (The Trump administration defended its actions in Minneapolis.)

“Thank you,” Springsteen said. “I really want to embrace this for all the citizens of Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Portland who were against the federal government’s invasion of their cities. I’m going to take this and keep it in their name.”

Robert De Niro slams ‘Trump and his reckless enablers’ at Tribeca Festival

At the end of the ceremony, Patti Smith came out to perform “Peaceable Kingdom” and “People Have the Power,” the latter backed by Springsteen, Bono, and Smith’s bandmate Tony Shanahan. Springsteen then took to the stage and performed a solo acoustic rendition of “Land of Hope and Dreams,” a song he dedicated to his wife, Patti Scialfa.

Springsteen ended the event with a simple, “God bless America and go Knicks,” and overall kept his attacks on President Donald Trump to a minimum. Robert De Niro, who was there to introduce Springsteen, was predictably harsh in his criticism of the commander-in-chief.

“Nobody insults Trump like Bob,” Springsteen joked, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd.

De Niro and Trump have had a long-standing feud. USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment. The president previously posted on Truth Social that the Oscar-winning actor “has such a low IQ that he has no idea what he’s doing or saying.”

In his introduction at Tribeca, De Niro praised Springsteen’s ability to “move people with the music he creates” and to “give voice to the powerless.”

“He’s using it to lead the resistance,” De Niro said. “He knows what the problem is and he names it Donald J. Trump and his reckless initiatives. This is very important because this is not about a rational debate over policy. This is about one man’s corruption and megalomania. Bruce Springsteen puts a face to it and does it in the words of a poet.”

“Our democracy, our Constitution, and the rule of law are now under unprecedented challenge by a reckless, racist, incompetent and treasonous president,” De Niro said. “Tonight, therefore, we ask all of you to help us choose hope over fear, democracy over authoritarianism, the rule of law over lawlessness, ethics over unchecked corruption, resistance over complacency, truth over lies, unity over division, and peace over war.”

Who won the 2026 World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco? Scores, highlights

0

Brazil and Morocco ended in a 1-1 draw in their opening World Cup match at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, June 13, sharing points in the only group stage matchup between two top-10 teams. Ismael Saibari scored an early goal for Morocco. Vinicius Jr. responded with a curling finish in the 32nd minute. Bono thwarted Igor Thiago’s attack for the rest of the game and brushed aside a succession of late chances to keep Atlas Lions level with the five-time champions.

The draw leaves a large gap in Group C. Morocco will play Scotland on Friday June 19th near Boston. Brazil, without Neymar due to a calf injury, will play Haiti that night in Philadelphia.

Group play for both teams ends on June 24th.

Watch the 2026 World Cup with Fubo

Vini Jr.’s hit sent MetLife Stadium into a frenzy. Fans were celebrating in every row, seat… even suite, including influencer Victoria Brito, a Brazil fan (and goddaughter of the legendary Pepe) with over 2 million followers on Instagram. After celebrating, she posed for a photo with fellow Canarinho fan and actor and director Keegan-Michael Key, who was in the suite next to her.

Another celebrity was also spotted mingling with fans and celebrities on the suite level. Former NFL star Chad Ochocinco watches a game at MetLife Stadium. Having an avid soccer plan, he played even while growing up until he finally decided to play soccer. – Ralphie Aversa

Rapper Travis Scott is in the building. A chart-topping artist was caught on camera in the crowd at MetLife Stadium during Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco, adding to the excitement on a celebrity-packed night that already included Tom Brady and New York City Mayor Zoran Mandani. This is the featured match of the tournament’s opening weekend, and we’ve assembled a guest list accordingly.

Mamdani’s spokesperson said the mayor plans to attend several games. He seemed to be in a FIFA sponsor’s suite.

“Given the unique nature of the World Cup and the once-in-a-generation opportunity for New York City to be the host city, the Mayor will be present at select matches at the New York-New Jersey Stadium in an official capacity carrying out his official duties as the host city’s chief executive. This is a contractual obligation between the New York-New Jersey 2026 World Cup Organizing Committee and FIFA, which the City and the Mayor are fulfilling.”

Halftime: Brazil 1, Morocco 1

An intense end-to-end opening 45 minutes ended in a draw against MetLife. Morocco came out as attackers and sealed the victory in the 21st minute when Brahim Díaz played a perfect ball through the Brazilian defense and Ismael Saibari lofted the ball over the onrushing Alisson. Brazil needed a moment of magic to get back on track, and Vinicius Jr. delivered. In the 32nd minute, he drifted in from the left, cut in with his right foot and curled a shot past Bono and into the top corner. This was his 10th goal in 50 appearances for the Brazilian national team.

There are two things to keep in mind after reopening. Brazil were walking a tightrope in midfield and Casemiro and Roger Ibanez were fouled trying to smooth out Morocco’s counterattack. If either side makes another reckless challenge, Brazil could be in trouble.

The crowd got even more excited after Vini Jr.’s tying goal. Three teams are represented here: Brazil, Morocco, and the New York Knicks. Many fans have been seen wearing Knicks gear and are already (hopefully) making plans to leave MetLife Stadium soon to join the watch party. That includes New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who is sitting next to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. – Ralphie Aversa

Goals: Morocco 1, Brazil 1. Vinicius Jr. reached the Brazilian level. The Real Madrid star scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute. The combination of Rafinha and Vini Junior left him alone on the left side of the box, he cut inside with his right foot and fired a stunning shot into the top corner of the goal. The goal was to cancel out Ismael Saibari’s opening goal and get Brazil back into the game. Morocco took the lead from the beginning. It was a necessary moment for Brazil.

Goals: Morocco 1, Brazil 0. Ismael Saibari surprised Brazil. The striker darted through the defense on a perfect punt from Brahim Dias, broke through and lifted the finishing kick over the onrushing Alisson. 21 minutes.

Fox cameras spotted Tom Brady hugging Neymar near the field before Saturday’s kickoff. Brady is more than just a celebrity here. The seven-time Super Bowl winner is a minority owner of English club Birmingham City. As for Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer will not play tonight due to a calf injury, but he will be in the squad.

Yasin Bounow. Achraf Hakimi (captain), Issa Diop, Chadi Riyad, Nousser Mazraoui. Nir El Ainaoui, Ayyoub, Bouadi. Brahim Diaz, Azzedine Ounahi, Bilal El Cannous. Ismael Saibari

Seth Bartelny: Brazil 1-1 Morocco

Brazil are not as strong as they have been in recent years, while Morocco are still showing strength despite a recent change of manager. A close battle with no winner is expected.

John Arnold: Brazil 1-1 Morocco

This group could get interesting, especially if Brazil’s offense gets off to a slow start as I expected. There are some top names and great players there, but Morocco are the type of team that can surprise Brazil and score their own goals.

Jesse Yomtov: Brazil 2 – 1 Morocco

Brazil finds a way out in the fierce battle at the Meadowlands.

Victoria Hernandez: Brazil 3 – 1 Morocco

Morocco is scoring like no one else and hasn’t lost a game since August, but Brazil is a strong team that can easily take second place.

Saturday’s game at MetLife Stadium will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — For Lia Bonadio, a Brazilian living in Mexico City, today’s game between Brazil and Morocco is her Super Bowl. She even brought a sign to indicate that. “3-1!” she exclaimed when asked what she expected from today’s match. The crowd here at MetLife Stadium is primarily rooting for Canarinho. What Bonadio didn’t expect was how difficult it would be to get to MetLife Stadium from New York City. “It was complicated,” she says. “Nobody knew how to give us information.” Bonadio tried to catch the New Jersey Transit Authority from Penn Station and paid a $98 round-trip ticket. Instead, she was directed to the PATH train a block away from Penn, arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey. From there, New Jersey Department of Transportation personnel helped her get to MetLife Stadium. “I wasn’t expecting that,” she continues. “It was very confusing.” Bonadio traveled from Mexico City to New York for the match. It’s her first World Cup match. And while she didn’t expect the complicated route to the stadium, she still expected Brazil to win.

USMNT reminds us why America is truly great at the World Cup

0

play

ENGLEWOOD, Calif. — Enacts the 14th Amendment to assist the U.S. men’s national team to victory in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup.

Without it, Folarin Balogun would never have donned the USMNT uniform.

Balogun’s performance – he scored two banger goals in the first half of the USMNT’s 4-1 win over Paraguay in the World Cup opener – is a reminder that the 14th Amendment, better known as birthright citizenship, helps make this country exceptional. It is something to be celebrated, not diminished.

Balogun was born in New York. His mother was visiting family in London and was too far along in her pregnancy to return to London as planned. Although he grew up in London, he chose to represent the USMNT over England or Nigeria, where his parents are from.

“When I committed and throughout the entire cycle and journey to get to this point, I always said the fans gave me a lot of motivation and showed me a lot of support, and the most important thing for me was always being able to reciprocate that,” Balogun said.

“So I feel like today is a great opportunity and like I said, I want to continue to show the fans that I made the right decision. And I’m completely proud and I want to continue to make the fans proud as well.”

There is no such thing as a “typical” American.

Contrary to what some people believe, there is no such thing as a “typical” American. We are not a conventional nation, and never have been.

Unless you are a Native American, we all trace our lineage to different countries and different cultures. We take all these different pieces of history and merge them into this wonderfully diverse country. In our food, music, language, work ethic, and government systems, we have taken influences from many different histories and made them uniquely our own.

It also means that, at least in theory, everyone in this country starts on an equal footing and the opportunities are limitless.

Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way. However, there is a possibility that That is American exceptionalism. It’s not about the color of someone’s skin or what religion they practice (or don’t practice). It’s not about address or socio-economic status. It means welcoming everyone born here unconditionally and offering the possibility of a better life for those born after.

There is a movement now underway to destroy that, to whitewash our society by pretending that there is some fabricated concept of “Americanness” and to eliminate those who do not fit into it. But Balogun, and the USMNT as a whole, have really proven that it will never succeed.

USMNT is great because it’s diverse

The USMNT, like the nation it represents, is greater than the sum of its parts. It is led by an Argentine who has spent much of his adult life in Europe. The players hail from Birmingham, Alabama and all over the world. to Hershey, Pennsylvania. To Almere in the Netherlands.

Some are first-generation Americans, and some have dual citizenship. Some players have traveled the world since birth, as military brats or soccer vagrants, while others still play in the same town they grew up in.

But they all carry USA on their chests. Whether they were born in this country or chose this country as theirs, they are equally American in the eyes of the Constitution and in everything we have ever been told about this great country.

“There may be a lot of people here who have never been here to cheer for us, but we hope that with this performance today they will connect with us,” Weston McKennie said.

“We want it to be something we can relate to, and they can feel the joy when we play.”

The Powerball jackpot has increased to $258 million with a cash value of $115.6 million ahead of the drawing on Saturday, June 13th.

Since its launch in 1992, the Powerball jackpot has been hit more than 400 times. Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin rank among the states with the most winning jackpot tickets.

Despite hundreds of wins, Powerball hasn’t had a jackpot winner in over a month. The last jackpot was won on May 2nd, when two players from Texas and Florida split the $20 million prize.

Here’s what you need to know about Saturday night’s Powerball drawing.

What are the winning Powerball numbers for June 13th?

USA TODAY will publish the winning numbers at 10:59 p.m. ET after the lottery drawing.

How to play Powerball

Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This can be done at a variety of locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Powerball tickets online depending on your local jurisdiction.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered from 1 to 69. The red Powerball range is 1-26. You can also add a “Power Play” for $1, which increases your winnings on all non-jackpot prizes. “Power Play” multipliers allow you to increase your winnings by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x.

A “Quick Pick” option is also available if you want the computer to select the numbers for you. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls and the red Powerball in any order.

Powerball drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. The winnings continue to increase even if no one wins the jackpot.

Do I have to be a US citizen or resident to play Powerball?

The short answer is no. You do not need to be a US citizen or resident to play Powerball. Anyone visiting any of the 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands may purchase lottery tickets from authorized and licensed retailers, regardless of nationality, as long as they meet the legal age requirements (usually 18 years old) at the time of purchase.

Former All-Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith dies at age 36, 49ers announce

0

Former All-Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith has passed away.

The San Francisco 49ers, who selected Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, released a statement on Saturday, June 13, mourning Smith’s death.

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” a Niners statement said.

“Aldon’s undeniable talent and on-field dominance were on display from the moment he joined our organization, posting one of the greatest rookie seasons in National Football League history. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization extends our deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”

Smith was 36 years old.

Smith, who played at the University of Missouri (he was named All-Big 12 with the Tigers in 2010), started his NFL career with a bang, totaling 33 and a half sacks in his first two seasons, a league record for a player’s first two years. After finishing second to Von Miller in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2011, Smith set a San Francisco single-season franchise record with 19 and a half sacks as the Niners advanced to Super Bowl XLVII in 2012, losing 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.

At 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds with incredible explosiveness and bend off the edge, Smith earned his only Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors after the pinnacle of his career in 2012. That season, he formed one-quarter of the 49ers’ incredible linebacking corps, which also included Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman (both All-Pros) and Ahmad Brooks, who lined up opposite Smith.

San Francisco made the playoffs in each of Smith’s first three years in the NFL. He played in eight postseason games and added 20 tackles and five and a half sacks.

aldon smith suspension

Substance abuse and legal problems soon took a toll on Smith personally and professionally. He was suspended for nine games in 2014 for substance abuse and personal conduct policy violations. After Smith was arrested for his third DUI, San Francisco released him before the 2015 season.

After San Francisco parted ways with Smith in the summer of 2015, former Ravens and 49ers wideout Torrey Smith said, “Aldon was one of the best football players I’ve ever been around, and we had some Hall of Fame players in Baltimore.” “His talent, no one can deny that. I just hope he can put everything together and maybe get another chance.”

“We all have problems. None of us may know our problems, but we all have something we have to deal with. And unfortunately, he’s handling himself a little bit differently than you think or want him to be. Nobody’s perfect, so I hope he gets all the help he needs.”

Smith quickly signed with the Oakland Raiders, but midway through the 2015 campaign, he received a one-year suspension from the NFL for another substance abuse violation. He did not return until 2020, spending time with the Dallas Cowboys. Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, but was released before the regular season after being arrested again.

Qatar scores first World Cup goal with dramatic goal against Switzerland

0

Qatar scored a last-minute equalizer to take a point from Switzerland in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Saturday, June 13, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. It was a 1-1 draw.

Switzerland’s Briel Embolo calmly converted a penalty in the 17th minute and it looked like Switzerland would hold on for the rest of the game until Qatar’s Boualem Kuki scored in the 94th minute.

The draw secured Qatar’s first points at the World Cup, when they debut as hosts in 2022.

Canada drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first group game on Friday, leaving all four teams in Group B with one point after the first round. Switzerland will next play Bosnia in Los Angeles, while Qatar will head north to take on Canada in Vancouver.

Switzerland were unable to extend their advantage further and faced a nervous final 10 minutes with Qatar looking for an equalizer.

Qatar, still leading by one point, made three changes with an hour remaining.

Briel Emoboro’s penalty in the 17th minute was the only goal of the first half, and Switzerland dominated throughout the first 45 minutes. Qatar should be happy to go into half-time with just a one-goal lead, but they will need to be creative in the second half.

In the 17th minute, Briel Emoboro calmly converted a penalty after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was fouled in the penalty area.

Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada came down to stop Switzerland’s Dan Ndoye’s powerful shot in the sixth minute.

We are watching the World Cup Group B showdown between Switzerland and Qatar at Levi’s Stadium.

Switzerland: Gregor Korbel, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Denis Zakaria, Bril Embolo, Remo Freuler, Granit Xhaka, Dan Ndoye, Ricardo Rodríguez, Rubén Vargas, Michel Aebisher.

qatar: Mahmoud Abunada, Pedro Miguel, Issa Rai, Jassem Gaber, Edmilson Jr., Akram Afif, Ayub Alawi, Homam Ahmed, Yusuf Abdulisag, Boualem Kuki, Asim Madibo,

Seth Durney: Switzerland 2-1 Qatar

Switzerland have an advantage in experience and quality against Qatar, who have yet to prove they can compete with top teams outside Asia.

John Arnold: Qatar 0-3 Switzerland

Qatar won 2 out of 13 matches in 2025 and 2026 (including 3 as substitutes in the FIFA Arab Cup). It’s hard to see a sudden improvement in quality against a Swiss team that dominated their qualifying group and look balanced.

Jesse Yomtov: Switzerland 4 – 1 Qatar

Swiss captain Granit Xhaka is in good form after a historic season with Sunderland and the team, 19th in the FIFA rankings, will beat Qatar.

Victoria Hernandez: Switzerland 1 – 0 Qatar

Qatar will have to wait one more game to get their first World Cup win simply because Switzerland is the better team.

Tyra Banks says Netflix’s ‘Next Top Model’ doc was misleading in lawsuit

0

play

Tyra Banks is suing Netflix over her participation in the documentary series “America’s Next Top Model,” alleging that the creators misled her about the nature of the project and made defamatory statements.I will talk about her through editing.

In February, Netflix released three episodes of “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” which delved into the modeling reality competition series that Banks created in 2003, highlighting allegations that former contestants have since made against the production, citing examples of racism, exploitation, body shaming, and alleged sexual assault.

The show’s former host says the documentary was edited to support a false narrative and is asking a jury to determine the amount of damages, according to a legal complaint obtained by USA TODAY.

In the lawsuit, Banks said she participated in a three-and-a-half-hour interview after being told the project was aimed at discussing the long-running reality show’s legacy, including its successes and shortcomings. She said only 16 minutes of that interview was used by the documentary makers, and claimed that comments indicating responsibility for her actions were removed.

Directors Mo Rousey and Daniel Sivan are accused of using “selective editing, deliberate omissions, and surgical manipulation of continuous footage” to create a false narrative that Banks knowingly authorized the sexual assault of a cast member on the show and exploited the cast’s trauma for ratings purposes, according to the complaint.

“That story about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication and was streamed by Netflix to millions of viewers around the world,” the complaint says. “The story viewers heard was a deceptive one that the producers chose to tell.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Lawsuit claims editors fabricated false answers to questions about contestant Shandi Sullivan

Among the many accusations made in the docuseries, Season 2 contestant Shandi Sullivan accused the producers of allowing her to be sexually assaulted on camera while drunk.

Sullivan alleges that during a trip to Milan, a group of men driving the models in a Vespa invited them to their accommodation for dinner and drinks, and one of them assaulted her in front of production staff. According to her, parts of the incident were filmed, partially aired on television, and edited to make it appear as if she was cheating on her boyfriend back home.

In the documentary series, Rousey asks Banks, “Do you remember the story with Shandy?” Banks then responded, “Um,” before the screen went black. The suit says the implications of Banks’ failure to remember the assault on her show are “devastating and intentional.”

“However, that was false,” the complaint states. “The full footage of Ms. Banks’ interview reveals two things that producers cut out and didn’t show viewers in episode one: Ms. Banks looks up, nods — affirmatively, no doubt — and immediately says, ‘I remember what she said.'”

“By cutting out nods in the middle of the sequence and Ms. Banks’ comments at the end, the producers ensured that viewers saw lies instead of the truth,” the lawsuit continues.

First released in 2003, “America’s Next Top Model” followed aspiring professional models as they competed in fierce competition while being mentored and judged by Banks.

The show ran for 24 seasons until ending in 2018. At its commercial peak, the series attracted more than 100 million viewers worldwide, according to Netflix. Banks briefly left the series for the penultimate 2016-2017 season, which was hosted by British pop singer Rita Ora.

0

Google is offering free flights with its new flight simulator app.

The tech giant has added a free-to-play flight simulator within its Google Earth mapping software. What’s special about Google Earth Flight Simulator is that you can play it directly in your browser, whether it’s Google Chrome or Apple’s Safari, for example.

Google first began offering Flight Simulator as a hidden feature within its Google Earth software in 2007. But that version required you to download software. This experiment simulator can be used for free using a mouse and keyboard.

Google said in a June 12 post on social media platform

How to fly Google Earth Flight Simulator

Go to the Google Earth web page and click Explore. Click “Tools” and select “Flight Simulator”.

Navigate using the up, down, left, and right arrow keys on your keyboard. There’s also a vertical gauge that you can click to speed up or slow down (you can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys if your keyboard has them).

For more information, see our information page about flight simulator programs.

The launch of the browser version of the flight sim attracted a lot of attention online, with a video posted to Twitter receiving 5.5 million views. Although some commenters on X admitted that there were problems with the control of the plane. (This reporter also admits that there is a problem with not being able to see the horizon.)

One person posted: “This is great, but it’s too hard for me to control.” “I’ve crashed a lot of planes, haha,” said another.

However, flight controls were not an issue for some. Another X commenter boasted, “You can finally crash a jet into your house in 4K resolution right from your browser tab.”

A mass shooting in Midland, Texas leaves one person dead and the community in mourning. what we know

play

A Texas community is mourning the death of a city employee on June 13, a day after a gunman opened fire in Midland and barricaded himself inside a building for hours.

One victim, identified as Midland City employee Ed Scott, was killed and 10 others were injured. The identities of the injured have not been released. On the evening of June 12, community members gathered for prayer and gathering.

Authorities said the gunman, Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, also died inside the abandoned veterinary hospital, and the standoff ended on the afternoon of June 12. Villarreal became the subject of an investigation after police say he fired at officers during a traffic stop just before midnight June 10 and fled the scene.

Midland City Government released a statement on social media saying, “Today is one of the most difficult days our organization and community has ever faced. We have lost one of our own.”

Here’s what we know about the shooting and investigation.

What happened in the Midland, Texas mass shooting?

Around 8 a.m. local time on June 12, authorities responded to a report of an active shooter in the 4600 block of West Wall Street in Midland, a city of more than 145,000 people in West Texas. When they arrived, Villarreal fired shots at bystanders and officers, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He then barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary building.

City officials urged residents to stay away from the area, but authorities ensued a standoff that was not ended until nearly noon. Officials said they secured and cleared the area and brought in armored vehicles and response personnel from multiple local and state agencies.

Officials said the standoff ended after robot and drone footage showed the suspect dead inside the building.

Who were the victims?

Ed Scott has been identified as the fatal shooting victim. He was a city employee, but authorities have not disclosed his exact role.

“Ed was involved in the community, especially as an integral part of local and regional softball organizations. Most importantly, he was a loving father and husband, and an all-around good person,” Midland officials said in a statement.

The city said Scott’s family has asked for privacy.

“Behind every employee badge is a husband or wife, a mother or father, a son or daughter, a friend or teammate, and someone whose life touched countless others. Today, families are experiencing an indescribable loss, and our hearts are with them,” the city said.

The identities of the 10 injured have not been revealed. Midland Memorial Hospital said nine of the victims were treated there. Five people were discharged from the hospital on the same day, and four had or were undergoing surgery.

What we know about suspect Victor Mata Villarreal

According to Midland Police, on June 10th at approximately 11:23 p.m., an officer attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle fled for several blocks before coming to a stop. Police said the driver, identified as Villarreal, got out of his car and fired a rifle at officers.

Villarreal then fled the scene in a vehicle as officers returned fire. Police said the officer was not injured.

The vehicle was later found abandoned not far from the scene of the attempted traffic stop, but Villarreal was still at large. Officials said he was wanted on charges of attempted capital murder against security personnel.

Villarreal lived near Odessa, Texas, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Authorities have not released a motive for the two shootings, which occurred on June 10 and June 12. It also did not say how the suspected gunman died inside the building.
