Size, weight, and metal standards

0

Purchasing gold bars is one of the easiest ways to invest in physical gold. However, choosing the right bar is not always easy. Gold bars vary widely in size, weight, purity, and production style, and those differences can affect price, liquidity, and long-term value. Understanding how these factors work together can help you choose a bar that fits your budget, investment goals, and exit strategy.

What are gold bars?

Gold bars are gold bullion made by refining gold with a purity of 99.5% or higher. Gold bars produced by government mints and private refineries range in size from as small as 1 gram to as large as 400 troy ounces.

Each bar is typically stamped with important details such as weight, purity, and refiner characteristics. Popular with both retail and institutional investors, gold bars often command a lower premium than gold coins and are relatively easy to buy and sell, especially if sourced from a well-known refiner.

Are gold bars a good investment?

Gold bars are a useful investment for diversification and long-term wealth preservation, but they are not a one-size-fits-all solution.

One of the main benefits of gold is its role as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. When stock markets are volatile or currencies decline in value, gold often retains its purchasing power better than many other assets. As a result, investors often use gold bars to balance a broader portfolio rather than as their primary growth investment.

However, gold does not generate income like stocks or bonds, and its price can fluctuate in the short term. In other words, returns depend entirely on price increases over time.

For investors who value stability and long-term value, gold bars can be a viable option, especially when purchased at a competitive premium. However, for those seeking growth or income, it is usually best used as a complementary asset rather than a core asset.

Types of gold bars by manufacturing method

When purchasing gold bars, you will usually come across two main types: minted and minted. You may also see CombiBars®, a type of mint bar designed to be split. Here’s how each works:

minted gold bars

Cast gold bars are made from refined gold, rolled into thin strips, cut into blanks, and punched in a high-pressure press. The result is a uniform bar with a smooth, polished finish, sharp edges, and precise engraving.

These bars are typically manufactured in smaller sizes and are often shipped sealed in tamper-evident packaging with a certificate of analysis (certificate of the weight and purity of the bar). Cast bars tend to command a higher premium per ounce than cast bars, but they look sleeker and are generally easier to resell.

cast gold bars

Cast gold bars are manufactured by pouring molten gold into a mold and letting it cool and solidify. This process creates bars with a more natural, uneven appearance, including rounded edges and textured surfaces.

They typically have a lower premium than cast bars, especially in larger sizes. Although minted bars may not be very convenient for resale in small quantities, they are a practical option for investors focused on maximizing gold weight at low cost.

CombiBars® or splittable bars

CombiBars® are a type of cast gold bar designed to break into smaller pieces. Developed by ESG, it consists of multiple 1-gram segments (often 50 or 100 grams total) that can be separated as needed.

This structure allows investors to hold larger bars while maintaining the flexibility to sell smaller pieces over time. As with other gold bullion products, individual segments can typically be sold to dealers at prevailing market prices.

Common gold bar sizes and weights

Gold bars come in standard sizes ranging from 1 gram to 400 troy ounces, with smaller bars preferred by individual investors and larger bars typically used by institutional investors. Our premium 400oz “Good Delivery” bars are primarily used by central banks and large institutions, while our smaller bars are designed for individual investors.

Gold bar size comparison

As the size of a gold bar increases, manufacturers and distributors spread their production and distribution costs over more ounces. This typically results in a lower premium per ounce, and larger bars (e.g., 10 troy ounces or 1 kg) are usually more cost effective than smaller bars (e.g., 1 troy ounce).

The tradeoff is liquidity. Smaller bars are easier to sell as they can be traded in more accessible units. For example, if you own multiple 10 gram bars, you can sell some of your holdings over time. In contrast, unless it’s in a divisible format like CombiBar, you’ll need to sell a whole 100 gram bar.

gold bar size typical buyer Why people choose it
1 gram Beginners, gift buyers Lowest cost of entry (but highest premium). Easy to buy, sell and gift
10 grams new investor Affordable price, slightly better than 1g bar
20 grams individual investor Balance between affordability and low premiums
1 troy ounce individual investor A globally recognized standard. High liquidity and easy trading
50 grams individual investor Achieve more efficient pricing while maintaining sales control
100 grams serious individual investor Low premium per gram. Excellent balance of size and fluidity
10 troy ounces experienced investor Less premium than 1 oz. still widely traded
1 kilogram High net worth individuals, serious investors Much lower insurance premiums. Efficient way to store larger values
100 troy ounces Institutional investors, large private buyers Lump-sum investment. Lower cost per ounce, but less sales flexibility
400 troy ounces central bank, institution Global wholesale trading standards set by the LBMA

Comparison of gold bars and gold coins

Gold bars and gold coins are the two most common ways to own physical gold, but they differ in cost, flexibility, and use cases.

Gold bars usually command a lower premium than coins because they are easier to manufacture, especially in larger sizes. Pricing is also simpler, as value is primarily based on weight and purity.

Gold coins, on the other hand, often carry a higher premium due to their minting costs and, in some cases, collectible value related to their rarity, design, or demand. However, they tend to be easier to sell because they are produced in smaller denominations and are widely recognized by dealers and buyers.

While coins are convenient for storage and transportation, bars are often preferred by investors focused on accumulating large amounts of gold at a lower cost per ounce.

How investors choose different gold bars

Choosing the right gold bars will depend on your budget, investment goals, and need for flexibility.

Larger bars typically have a lower cost per ounce, making them more cost effective for long-term investors. However, they require a large upfront investment and usually must be sold all at once. In contrast, smaller bars are easier to access and split up and liquidate, making them useful if you want more control over when and how you sell.

“Typically, you end up choosing between premium and flexibility,” says Keeper founder and tax advisor David Kang. “1oz bars and coins are easier to sell, have more name recognition, and are much easier to price. Larger bars, on the other hand, are more appealing to long-term holders looking for value for money, but require larger upfront commitments and all-or-nothing sales.”

Where investors usually buy gold bars

Individual investors can purchase gold bars from a variety of sources, including precious metals dealers, online marketplaces, and local coin shops.

To evaluate a seller, look for appropriate documentation such as a strong track record of customer reviews, Better Business Bureau certification, a clear repurchase policy, and a certificate of analysis if applicable.

“Most reputable dealers have transparent pricing at a premium to the spot rate, so investors know exactly what they are paying,” says Kang.

What to pay attention to when buying gold bars

Steel bars produced by LBMA-certified official refiners are generally more reliable and easier to resell in the secondary market. You should also look for:

  • Purity 99.5% or more
  • Clearly engraved weights and engravings
  • Certificate of analysis or tamper evident packaging
  • London Bullion Market Association Certified Refiner

How to safely store gold bars

Storing your gold bars safely is important to protect your investment. The right option for you will depend on how much gold you have and your comfort with access, cost, and risk.

Many investors choose to keep small amounts in a high-quality safe at home. This provides immediate access, but requires careful consideration of security and may require additional insurance coverage.

Another option is a bank safe deposit box. This provides a higher level of physical security, but may limit access to banking hours and may not be insured by the bank itself.

For large holdings, some investors turn to third-party vault storage services. These facilities are designed specifically for precious metals and often include insurance and professional security. You can also choose the option of allocated storage, where specific bars are held in your name, or unallocated storage, where you own a share of the pooled gold.

Regardless of which method you choose, it’s important to keep documents such as receipts and certificates of analysis in a separate secure location to support ownership and resale.

conclusion

Gold bars come in a variety of sizes, formats, and purities, each with trade-offs that affect cost, price per ounce, and liquidity. Understanding these differences will help you choose a bar that fits your budget, investment strategy, and eventual withdrawal plan.

Frequently asked questions about types of gold bars

What sizes do gold bars come in?

Gold bars typically range from as little as 1 gram to as much as 400 troy ounces, and come in a variety of standard sizes for retail and institutional investors.

What is the best gold bar size for an investor?

The best gold bar size will depend on your budget, goals, and need for flexibility. Smaller bars are more affordable and easier to sell, but come at a higher premium per ounce. Larger bars have a lower cost per ounce, but require a higher upfront investment and have less liquidation flexibility. Dividable options like CombiBars® can provide a middle ground.

How much does a standard gold bar weigh?

Although there is no single standard size, the 400 troy ounce bar is the global benchmark used in the wholesale market. For individual investors, the most common size is 1 troy ounce.

Do larger gold bars cost less per ounce?

yes. Larger gold bars typically have a lower price per ounce because the cost of production and distribution is spread over more gold.

How pure is a gold bar?

Investment grade gold bars must have a minimum purity of 99.5%, but many modern gold bars are refined to 99.99%.

Utah Valley University drops commencement speaker after Kirk’s comments

Utah Valley University has dropped Shannon McMahon as a commencement speaker after conservative groups criticized her for past comments about Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on campus during his comeback tour of the United States in September.

The university announced on April 16 that it will no longer have a featured speaker after consultation with public safety officials and New York Times bestselling author and educator McMahon. The entrance ceremony is scheduled for April 29th.

“Due to heightened safety concerns related to speakers, after consultation with public safety experts and Sharon McMahon, Utah Valley University has decided to proceed with this year’s commencement ceremony without a featured commencement speaker,” university officials told local broadcaster KUTV.

According to Salt Lake City television station KUTV, McMahon’s selection came under scrutiny over comments she made after Kirk’s assassination on UVU’s campus earlier this year.

The post was later deleted, but was published shortly after Kirk’s death. In it, McMahon criticized her rhetoric and referred to what she described as a backlash to the public reaction following McMahon’s assassination.

“It’s important to remember that the incredible tragedy of his public assassination does not erase the harm so many experienced by his words and the subsequent actions of his supporters,” one post read.

Canceled following Kirk’s death

Mr. McMahon joins dozens of people who have come under fire for comments made after Mr. Kirk’s death. In the most high-profile incident, late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel had his show taken off the air following comments about Kirk’s assassination.

Kimmel was suspended for six days after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr publicly criticized the comedian’s comments. The suspension was rescinded following a massive public outcry, with politicians on both sides of the aisle claiming it was an attempt by the government to censor free speech.

More than 100 people, including educators, lawyers, doctors and first responders, have been fired, suspended, reprimanded or investigated for their comments after Kirk’s assassination, according to a USA TODAY analysis.

President Trump addresses feud with Pope, says it’s okay to disagree

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has chipped away at his week-long feud with Pope Leo XIV, saying it’s OK for the two to take different approaches to world issues.

“I’m not fighting him,” Trump said. “The pope can say what he wants to say, and I want him to say what he wants, but I can also disagree.”

The president’s comments came after Trump and Leo exchanged a series of critical messages about the war with Iran in statements to the press and on social media.

In an April 10 post, Leo said that followers of Christ “will never stand by those who once wielded swords and today drop bombs.”

Following President Trump’s threat to Iran on Easter Sunday, April 5, Leo told reporters on April 7, “There is this threat against the entire Iranian people, and this is truly unacceptable.”

What are Trump and Leo fighting about?

President Trump criticized the Pope on social media on April 12th.

President Trump said, “Pope Leo is weak on crime, but terrible on foreign policy.” “I don’t want a pope who criticizes the president of the United States, because that’s exactly what I was elected to do in a landslide…If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

Vice President J.D. Vance said April 14 that the pope “should be careful when speaking about theological issues.”

In response, Bishop James Massa, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, issued a statement saying the Pope is preaching the Gospel.

“When Pope Leo

Asked about the bishops’ statement, Trump said he had the right to object.

“I want him to preach the gospel. I’m all about the gospel,” Trump said. “But I also know that you can’t force a mean country to have nuclear weapons. If they had nuclear weapons, they would use them, and they would use them quickly, killing millions of people.”

Reporters asked President Trump if he felt Leo, the nation’s first pope, was being disrespectful.

President Trump said, “I don’t think that way.” “The Pope needs to understand that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.”

Mamdani’s wife Rama Duwaj apologizes for social media post

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s wife Rama Dowaj has apologized for a “harmful” social media post she made when she was a teenager.

play

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s wife Rama Dowaj has apologized for a social media post she made when she was a teenager, now calling it “toxic.”

The Washington Free Beacon uncovered social media posts from several years ago in which Dowaj used a racial epithet against black people while referring to a friend, and also used anti-gay slurs.

“I felt extremely embarrassed in the face of the language I had used that was so harmful to others,” Dowaj, a 28-year-old illustrator and New York City’s first lady, said in an April 15 article published in the online art magazine Hyperallergic. “Just because you’re 15 years old is not an excuse,” Dwaj added.

Hyperallergic originally asked Dhwaj about becoming a public figure last year, when her husband Mamdani, 34, won the mayorship of the country’s largest city in a shocking upset. Duwaj quoted an old tweet and apologized for the language he used.

“I have read and seen many of the responses from others and I understand the hurt I have caused and am truly sorry,” she said. “My focus is not on becoming a public figure, but on continuing to work with care and responsibility and letting my art speak for itself.”

Dwaj did not specify which post prompted the apology. She also did not mention a recent post she shared about Israel, which some have noted criticizes Mamdani’s views on Israel and its treatment of Palestinians.

After some of her past social media activity became public, Mamdani said his wife was a “private person”.

Dowaj came under intense scrutiny in early March after he liked an Instagram post that appeared to support the first Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Later that month, the conservative news outlet Free Beacon reported on old social media posts by Douwaj, a Syrian-American born in Texas. She shared a Tumblr post honoring militant Palestinian women who participated in plane hijackings and bus bombings. Another repost of Dowaj, from around 2015, states that Tel Aviv should not exist because Israeli cities occupy Palestine.

In a 2013 post on Twitter (now known as Dowaj is not black.

City Hall did not respond to an emailed request for comment. In response to questions from reporters on April 16, Mamdani did not specify which posts his wife had apologized for.

“She expressed some of her thoughts in this interview,” Mamdani told reporters. “I don’t have much to add. But what I can say is that she’s an incredibly genuine person.”

He said questions about Dowaj’s social media posts were “part” of him being mayor and that it was his decision and his responsibility to New Yorkers.

President Trump nominates Erica Schwartz as new CDC director

President Donald Trump has announced new leadership for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, naming former Deputy Surgeon General Erica Schwartz to head the CDC.

“Erica graduated from Brown University and medical school, went on to a distinguished career as an M.D. in the world’s largest and most powerful military, and then served as Deputy Surgeon General during my first term. She is a star,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social on April 16.

Schwartz served as Deputy Surgeon General during President Trump’s first term. The CDC has not had a permanent director since August.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

The government will start reimbursing customs duties. What does that mean to you?

0

play

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin a program to begin refunding businesses that paid duties on imported goods, after the Supreme Court ordered the government to do so earlier this year.

CBP said in an April 14 court filing that it will begin the first phase of the system, known as “Input Integrated Management and Processing,” on April 20.

The CAPE system is intended to unify the refund process, allowing importers to receive a single electronic payment rather than having their refund processed by CBP for each entry, the agency said on its website.

In February, the Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump did not have the authority to impose tariffs on companies that import goods from other countries, invalidating the full tariffs.

The following month, a U.S. Trade Court judge ordered the government to refund importers who had paid a total of $166 billion in tariffs, Reuters reported.

How does the fee refund system work?

As part of his economic policy, President Trump used a law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on nearly all goods imported into the United States starting in early 2025.

Importers who have paid duties under IEEPA are eligible to request a refund using the CAPE system. To do this, importers can submit a declaration known as a CAPE declaration to the authority’s automated Commercial Environment Secure Data Portal. An overview of the entire process can be found on CBP’s website.

As of April 9, more than 56,000 importers had completed the existing process to receive electronic tariff refunds, totaling $127 billion in refunds, CBP official Brandon Lord said in a court filing.

What does customs duty refund mean for consumers?

Although the refunds have been issued, President Trump continues to push for tariffs to be imposed under separate legislation. According to Reuters, these obligations are being challenged in court.

But if tariffs remain in place, consumers may continue to pay for them.

A February report from the New York Fed found that U.S. consumers and businesses paid nearly 90% of the cost of President Trump’s tariffs in 2025, a trend that could continue if tariffs remain in place this year.

A recent CNBC survey of chief financial officers across sectors found that while their companies plan to apply for tariff refunds, they have no plans to share the money with consumers.

Bryan Cranston shares message with Shia LaBeouf and Frankie Muniz

0

Bryan Cranston joked about Shia LaBeouf’s legal troubles and revealed that he almost starred in “Hole’s” in an interview with Frankie Muniz.

play

Bryan Cranston just went all in on Shia LaBeouf as Walter White.

Cranston criticized the troubled actor in an interview with Malcolm in the Middle’s son Frankie Muniz when he discussed passing up LaBeouf’s role in Holes to star in 2003’s Agent Cody Banks.

“Everything was 100% because I signed on to be in the movie ‘Hole’ and we were about to start filming, and then they gave me the green light for ‘Cody Banks,'” Muniz said in a conversation with Cranston for the Esquire movie, which opens on Wednesday, April 15th. I immediately chose Agent Cody Banks, but I remember everyone pushing me to do Holes. ”

Muniz said he believed the Walt Disney Pictures film was more dramatic and thought he would be “taken more seriously as an actor,” especially since the prison comedy-drama film launched LaBeouf’s film career.

“What would my career and life have been like…I mean, that’s every decision you make,” Muniz continued.

But Cranston saw a silver lining.

“Shia LaBeouf’s life could have been taken,” he said, and Muniz left laughing as the “Breaking Bad” actor turned to the camera.

After a long, exaggerated sigh, Cranston added: “Shut up. Shire, help me.”

LaBeouf has been in and out of court over numerous cases of disorderly conduct and physical assault over the years since starring in hit films in the 2000s.

Most recently, the former “Even Stevens” child star was arrested in New Orleans for allegedly assaulting two men outside a bar after being thrown out during Mardi Gras. He said he felt “scary” being around gay people and fabricated a scuffle in which he appeared to have shouted homophobic slurs.

The “Transformers” star was ordered to rehabilitate during a February court appearance.

As for Cranston and Muniz, they’re promoting the highly anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reboot, Life’s Still Unfair.

Muniz pointed out to USA TODAY that Cranston, now 70, is not far from the age he started playing Malcolm’s father Hal in the 2000 original.

“It’s pretty wild when you think about it, because I remember thinking he was so old,” Muniz confesses. “I’m not that old!”

Dave says of Spicy Reaper: ‘Eat at your own risk’

Childhood friends chefs Dave Kopcyan, Arman Oganesian and Tommy Rubenian opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in 2017 with a cost of $900, parking, a portable fryer and folding tables, the company said in a news release.

Chicken Spot’s mascot is a rubber chicken, an ode to the rubber chicken that the company’s founders bought at a swap meet, the company told USA TODAY on April 16. The Dave’s Hot Chicken menu consists of new Hot Motts mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, sliders, mac and cheese, fries, chicken bites and cauliflower tenders.

The company’s dishes come in seven different spice levels: No Spicy/Not Spicy, Light Mild, Mild, Medium, Hot, Extra Hot, and Reaper.

The spiciest spice level, called Reaper, comes with a disclaimer. Anyone attempting Reaper’s Heat Level must be 18 years of age or older.

“Eat at your own risk,” the company says on its website. “You acknowledge that eating REAPER may cause harm including, but not limited to, personal injury, property damage, emotional distress, and even death.”

President Trump says hospitals are part of White House construction after order suspended

0

play

A federal judge has again issued an order halting construction on President Donald Trump’s $400 million White House Ballroom until “the express authorization of Congress” is received, ruling that the administration’s attempt to circumvent a previous ruling was “incredible, if not disingenuous.”

An earlier ruling by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon on March 31 to halt construction excluded “measures absolutely necessary to ensure the safety and security of the White House and its grounds.”

In an April 3 motion, the Trump administration argued that construction of the entire banquet hall must proceed or the Executive Mansion would “remain open,” resulting in “significant national security harm” to the building, the president, his family, and staff.

In his April 16 ruling, Leon sought to clarify the earlier injunction.

“Defendants are now attempting to overturn this exception, falsely claiming that the entire ballroom project may proceed,” Leon wrote. “Defendants claim that the entire ballroom construction project, from top to bottom, falls within the safety and security exception and can proceed unabated. That is neither reasonable nor a correct interpretation of my order!”

Trump accused Leon of being a “Trump hater” who “goes out of his way to undermine national security and prevent this great gift to America from being delayed or built.”

President Trump also listed the facilities that will be part of the project: “Air raid shelters, state-of-the-art hospitals and medical facilities, protected compartments, top-secret military facilities, structures and equipment, protective missile-resistant steel, columns, roofs, beams, drone-proof ceilings and roofs, military-grade vents, bulletproof, bulletproof and explosion-proof glass.”

The fact that the project would include a “state-of-the-art hospital” was not previously disclosed. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the hospital’s location or whether it would be above ground or underground.

The ruling comes after the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed an amended lawsuit last month against President Trump and several federal agencies seeking to halt construction of the 90,000-square-foot ballroom. The nonprofit group argued that Trump should have sought permission from Congress before demolishing the East Building.

Leon also clarified that the scope of the injunction applies only to “the above-ground construction of the planned banquet hall.”

“It does not stop the underground construction of national security facilities, the work necessary to ensure the safety of the president, the construction necessary to protect and secure the White House and the construction site itself,” he said.

Two days before the March 31 ruling, President Trump said a key part of the ballroom being built for the White House is a “large military complex” in its basement that should be kept secret. He accused the lawsuit of revealing secrets.

Trump administration cuts funding to Catholic Charities in Miami

play

The Trump administration has cut off millions of dollars in funding to Catholic Charities of Miami.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, has provided funding to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami under the Unaccompanied Children Program for many years. Catholic Charities received $11 million from HHS in fiscal year 2025, but that award ended March 31, according to federal spending data.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of the Archdiocese of Miami called for a review of the decision in an April 15 op-ed in the Miami Herald. He said the archdiocese has worked with ORR since 1960 to provide shelter and other services to thousands of unaccompanied minor children. However, its abrupt termination will force the organization to suspend its services within three months.

“If future waves of unaccompanied minors flood our nation, it is incomprehensible that the U.S. government would discontinue a program that would be difficult to replicate at the level of caliber and excellence that Catholic Charities has achieved,” he wrote in an op-ed.

The decision comes amid President Donald Trump’s public criticism of Pope Leo XIV after the pope called for an end to the Iran war. Here’s what we know:

Why did HHS cut funding to Catholic Charities?

Asked about the decision to cut funding, HHS spokeswoman Emily Hilliard said the number of unaccompanied children receiving ORR care has decreased under the Trump administration.

“ORR is closing and consolidating unused facilities as the Trump Administration continues its efforts to stop illegal immigration and the smuggling and trafficking of unaccompanied alien children,” Hilliard said.

Wenski addressed that argument in an op-ed, but noted the program’s long history. Shelter Msgr. Brian O. Walsh Children’s Village helped resettle approximately 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children under Operation Pedro Pan in the early 1960s and can now house up to 81 children.

“Our track record in serving this vulnerable population is unparalleled, but Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami’s services to unaccompanied minors will be defunded and forced to close within three months,” Wenski wrote in an editorial.

Two Republican congressmen from Florida, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and Rep. Carlos Gimenez, also issued a letter asking ORR to reconsider its decision.

“South Florida has always been the front line for humanitarian immigration in our hemisphere,” the April 3 letter said. They also warned about future immigration from Cuba and Haiti. “Catholic Charities offers trained staff, proven infrastructure, and decades of expertise that cannot be easily replaced…Losing this capability now will only make future response efforts more costly, time-consuming, and less effective.”

Neither the archdiocese nor Catholic Charities immediately responded to inquiries from USA TODAY.

President Trump publicly reprimands Pope Leo, cuts funding to Catholic Charities

On April 12, President Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV at length. The pope directly criticized not only the Iran war but also President Trump’s harsh words in the conflict, including his threat that “an entire civilization will perish tonight.”

President Trump called the pope “soft on crime” and credited Leo’s election as pope.

The pope responded to the post on April 13 during a conversation with reporters, saying, “I am not afraid of the Trump administration, nor will I speak out loud about the message of the Gospel.”

Vice President J.D. Vance, a Catholic, also said on April 14 that the pope should be “careful when speaking about theological issues.”

Trump again hit back at the Pope in an April 14 Truth social post. The president’s public jabs have angered some Catholics, the single largest religious denomination in the United States, according to the Pew Research Center.

Pope Leo has been calling for peace in recent days in posts about X, without mentioning his name. On April 16, he said in a speech in Cameroon that the world was “ravaged by a handful of tyrants.”

Miami Archbishop Wenski downplayed the public disagreements between Trump and Leo, commenting on the archdiocese’s blog that tensions between leaders are nothing new.

“(The pope) is not doing this to please the crowd,” Wenski said. “The only person the Pope really has to please is the Lord.”

‘American Pie’ star Shannon Elizabeth joins OnlyFans

Shannon Elizabeth, known for her roles in “American Pie” and “Scary Movies,” says she joined OnlyFans to take control of her career and show her “sexier side.”

play

A sex symbol from the early 2000s is set to join OnlyFans.

Shannon Elizabeth, who captivated generations with her role as foreign exchange student Nadia in American Pie, officially opened an account on Thursday, April 16th, joining the sex-positive platform.

Elizabeth, who recently told Entertainment Tonight that Nadia is “playing a character” because she’s “not just a girl who likes to get naked,” joined the platform to have more control over her career.

“I’ve spent my entire career in Hollywood, where other people have controlled the narrative and outcome of my career,” the 52-year-old actress said in an interview with People magazine published Wednesday. “This new chapter is about changing that, showing off a sexier side that no one has ever seen and getting closer to our fans.”

The actress’ appearance on OnlyFans recontextualizes Elizabeth’s half-naked role in the raunchy 1999 teen comedy, in which Nadia is recorded via webcam without her knowledge by hapless admirer Jim (Jason Biggs), an encounter that spirals into a live spectacle.

Elizabeth told ET that even though people incorrectly assumed she looked like her character, she still appreciated the role. “Everything I’ve ever done in my life is because of ‘American Pie,'” she said.

In the early 2000s, Elizabeth’s roles often relied on her sex-symbol image, including a parody role in Scary Movie (2000) and a cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), but later roles in Thirteen Ghosts (2001) and That 70’s Show helped her begin to emerge outside of the objectified box.

In the “Scary Movie” alum’s OnlyFans profile, she describes herself as an actress, storyteller, and “a little mischievous.”

“Here you’ll find a side of me that doesn’t make it into movies: more playful, spontaneous, and totally unscripted,” she wrote, adding that the page offers behind-the-scenes and candid moments, conversations, and “exclusive” photos and videos. “If you’ve ever wondered who I really am…you’ll soon find out.”

Elizabeth told People magazine that OnlyFans is “the future” of creative agencies.

“I chose OnlyFans because it allows me to connect directly with my audience, create whatever I want, and just be free,” she told the outlet. “I really think this is the future.”

AI is the cause of the increase in consumer fraud

0

play

Scams powered by advanced artificial intelligence are increasingly targeting U.S. consumers who have fallen victim to IDS and credit card theft and fraudulent charge schemes, a new analysis finds.

One in six U.S. consumers said they lost money in the past year to digital fraud in the form of email, online, phone, or text message scams, according to TransUnion’s latest Top Fraud Trends report. The median reported loss was $2,307.

“Fraud is big. It’s growing, it’s everywhere, and it’s not going away,” Clint Rowley, TransUnion’s vice president of global fraud solutions, told USA TODAY.

Generative AI may have accelerated the scale and sophistication of criminal activity.

While AI is a powerful tool that companies like TransUnion can use to protect consumers, fraudsters can and do use it for their own benefit, Lowry said.

“With the advent of AI, we have incredibly specialized fraud plans that can be executed very quickly and easily by anyone with very limited resources,” he said.

Digital fraud is on the rise

The report says Americans are disproportionately affected by credit card theft and fraudulent charges. One-third of U.S. consumers who lost money to digital fraud cited such attacks as the cause. This is the most reported category in the country and significantly higher than the global rate of 19%.

“Criminals are weaponizing both consumer trust and emerging technology,” Noreen Ali, head of U.S. fraud at TransUnion, said in a press release.

Theft of credit card information through phishing, website skimming, and account takeover are the leading methods of consumer fraud in the United States. Phishing in the form of fraudulent emails and QR codes aimed at stealing data or social posts was most commonly reported, with 39% of consumers saying they had been targeted.

What industries have the most fraud?

According to the report, sectors focused on consumer interaction, social connections, and entertainment had the highest number of fraud incidents in the United States. Online dating sites increased by 7%, and nearly 1 in 10 U.S. transactions on gaming sites were flagged for digital fraud.

There are also generational differences, with Gen Z consumers reporting the most fraud. In the US, 38% reported a loss, the highest of any generation. TransUnion said this may be due to Gen Z’s heavy use of gaming platforms, crypto exchanges and social apps, which are commonly targeted by scammers.

What can consumers do to protect themselves?

Lowry offered some tips to protect yourself from scams, including using different strong passwords for your accounts, using a password manager, and using two-factor authentication methods. Checking your credit report and implementing a credit freeze to protect your credit report can also be helpful, he said.

Lowry said people should protect their identity and avoid giving too much information online, including oversharing on social media, because scammers could use that information to hack into their accounts.

Scammers “prey on people’s good intentions. They prey on people’s charity, and in some cases they prey on fear,” Rowley said.

What is the pied-à-terre tax? Mamdani explains the move to tax second homes

0

play

Zoran Mamdani has announced plans to tax the wealthy, one of his key campaign promises.

The mayor, alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul, announced the state’s first new pied-à-terre tax.

But what is a pied-a-terre tax, and has it ever been introduced?

Here’s what you need to know:

Meaning of pied-à-terre tax

Pied-à-terre means “down to earth” in French and can mean a second home or residence.

The new tax “would impose an annual surcharge on one- to three-unit homes, condos, and co-ops valued at $5 million or more if the owner has another principal residence outside of New York City,” the city said.

This is the first of its kind in the state and a step toward one of Mamdani’s key campaign points: increasing taxes on wealthy residents.

“This measure targets the ultra-wealthy and global elite who use New York City real estate not as a home but as a means to accumulate wealth,” a release about the measure said.

“It’s expected to bring in $500 million a year, including some of the most expensive homes in the country.”

The Mamdani administration cited as examples billionaire Ken Griffiths, who owns a $240 million penthouse in Manhattan, and Russian car dealer Alexander Varshavsky, who owns a $20.5 million property in the city.

Where else could the pied-a-terre tax be spent?

Although many people do not refer to this as a pied-à-terre tax, similar rules are in place elsewhere around the world.

For example, British Columbia has a vacant properties tax, which, according to the province’s website, “aims to turn vacant properties into housing for British Columbians and to ensure that foreign owners and those with primarily overseas income contribute their fair share to BC’s tax system.”

France has a real estate wealth tax, which applies if the net taxable value of a household’s French real estate portfolio exceeds €1.3 million.

In Oakland, California, voters in 2018 approved a vacant property tax of $3,000 to $6,000 per year on properties used less than 50 days a year.

These are just a few examples of where similar taxes apply.

“Along with the governor, our administration is fighting every day to fairly address this deficit. The wealthy contribute what they owe, and our budget reflects our commitment to working New Yorkers who are being priced out of our city,” Mamdani said in the release.

Gatorade updates label, prepares to launch new long-lasting hydration drink

Gatorade is developing another new drink with a new mission: to help you avoid dehydration.

The PepsiCo-owned brand, which launched Gatorade Raw Sugar in March, has developed Gatorade Long Lasting Drink and Powder, which will be launched in pilot markets later this year ahead of a national rollout in 2027. Gatorlyte Longer Lasting contains 3x more electrolytes than Gatorade Thirst Quencher and is designed by Gatorade Sports Science Institute to keep users hydrated for longer.

Gatorade’s internal research shows that even though most Americans know that staying hydrated is important, more than 150 million Americans report feeling mild or moderately dehydrated each week, Mike Del Pozzo, president of PepsiCo US Beverages, told USA TODAY.

Being thirsty is ‘not necessarily a reliable signal’ that you need to stay hydrated

One of the biggest misconceptions about hydration is that it’s only important for elite athletes or extreme situations, said Damian Brown, PepsiCo’s senior vice president of R&D for U.S. beverages.

“In reality, mild to moderate dehydration can develop gradually throughout the day, often without awareness for most people, and thirst is not always a reliable signal,” Brown said in a news release shared on Thursday, April 16.

While athletes are likely to use the new Gatorlyte Longer Lasting product, there are “all kinds of use opportunities,” including the average worker and truck driver, for example, Del Pozzo told USA TODAY. “If you drink this in the morning, you don’t necessarily need to stay hydrated for four hours,” he added.

As part of the Gatorade Advanced Hydration System, Gatorade is also revamping its labels and messaging to ensure consumers understand the properties of each product. For example, the label for the classic Gatorade Thirst Quencher says “Hydrates better than water,” and the label for Gatorlyte, the low-carbohydrate, low-sugar, more electrolyte product that Gatorade brought to market in 2021, says “Hydrates faster than water.”

Gatorade has “repositioned our business to meet modern hydration needs… evolving from a leader in hydration for sports performance, athletes to a leader in science-backed hydration for everyone,” Del Pozzo said.

The goal is to “help people understand their hydration needs, not just on game day, but across daily health and performance moments,” he added.

Competition and inflation may cause some consumers to switch to water

Gatorade remains the sports drink leader with more than 60% of the U.S. market, according to Beverage Daily. According to the beverage news site, Coca-Cola’s Powerade and Body Armor are about 14% and 12%, respectively.

Consumer spending on sports drinks remains big business, totaling $11.7 billion over the past year (52 weeks ending March 22), up just 1%, according to Circana. However, sales fell by about 1% and prices rose by 1.9%, according to the research firm.

The influx of competitors and inflation in the sports drink category and other health drink products has made decision-making difficult for consumers.

“So people thought, ‘Oh, I’ll try switching to water,'” Del Pozzo said. “As leaders in hydration, we really see an opportunity to change this trajectory,” he added.

Studies have shown that electrolyte drinks are beneficial for people who exercise intensively or work in hot environments. However, drinking them throughout the day instead of water is not recommended for most people, the researchers said.

In response to the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to stop using some artificial colors, del Pozzo confirmed that Gatorade will also remove artificial colors from Gatorade Zero Powder, Gatorade Thirst Quencher Powder, and Gatorite Powder later this spring. And later this fall, Gatorade Thirst Quencher and Gatorade Zero fruit punch, lemon lime and orange flavors will be produced without artificial colors.

Instead, Gatorade uses pigments derived from fruits and vegetables, such as beta-carotene, which is found in purple potatoes, carrots, and dark green leafy vegetables.

The company’s research shows that moving to non-artificial colors can increase purchase intent by more than 50%. Del Pozzo said removing artificial colors is one way to win back lost customers.

“We are very excited about how this will impact overall purchase intent,” he added.

Who is Justin Fairfax? He is accused of killing his wife in a murder-suicide

0

play

Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax is charged with killing his wife in a possible murder-suicide in Virginia, authorities said.

Here’s what you need to know about Fairfax, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2021.

Who is Justin Fairfax?

Mr. Fairfax, a Democrat from Pittsburgh, began working in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2010.

“We were disappointed when Justin left the U.S. attorney’s office after just two years because we strongly believed that he had a very promising future,” longtime Justice Department prosecutor Gene Rossi told the New York Times.

He first ran for public office in 2013, running for attorney general of Virginia. He received 68,177 votes, losing to Mark Herring by about 4,000 votes.

In 2017, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, defeating Jill Vogel by a landslide 53-47. He became the second black politician to win a statewide election in Virginia, WAVY reported.

He ran for governor in 2021, but lost in the Democratic primary, receiving only 17,471 votes.

Fairfax and his wife reportedly had two children.

Did Justin Fairfax have a criminal history?

In 2019, Fairfax faced sexual assault allegations dating back at least 15 years.

Vanessa Tyson, who worked with Fairfax at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, claimed that Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex on him at a Boston hotel.

He denied the charges, claiming the contact was consensual. He called the allegations “stunning and hurtful” and said he knew they were “not true.”

A second woman, Meredith Watson, also reported that Fairfax sexually assaulted her in 2000 while attending Duke University.

Fairfax faced calls from the state Democratic Party and others to resign as lieutenant governor, but ultimately remained in the job.

After the second accusation, he said: “I deny this latest baseless allegation. It is demonstrably false.” “I have never forced myself on anyone. I demand a full investigation into these baseless and false allegations. I am telling the truth and such an investigation will corroborate my account. I will clear my name and I have nothing to hide.”

Fairfax was not charged, but filed a defamation suit in 2021 after CBS aired an interview with his accusers. The suit was subsequently dismissed.

She lost her virginity at the age of 41. The reason, she says, is because of limerence.

0

From the outside looking in, Amanda McCracken’s dating life in her 20s and 30s probably looked like the dating lives of many other young people.

She had been through a series of situations, one-off dates, and affairs. But unlike many other adults, McCracken’s short-term relationships lacked sex. The journalist and author, now 48, said she didn’t lose her virginity (which she defines as sexual intercourse) until she was 41.

McCracken wasn’t abstaining from sex for religious reasons, but she says it may have started out that way. Rather, she attributes her decades of celibacy to an addiction to limerence, the intense passion that often accompanies early relationships.

McCracken said her focus led her to pursue unavailable men, which kept her from finding a committed relationship, which kept her from having sex. The author details her journey with limerence and late virginity in her book, When Longing Becomes Lover: A True Story of Overcoming Limerence to Find True Love from Infatuation, Rejection, and Perfectionism, released in February.

“I waited until I was 41 to have sex, and I waited for a committed, loving relationship,” McCracken says. “What I realized, perhaps in my late 30s, was that I was basically sabotaging my chances at healthy, committed, loving relationships by dating people who were emotionally and physically unavailable. And because of that, I was staying in a familiar place of longing for what I didn’t have. … It was the longing itself that was keeping me from seeing the potentially healthy relationships that were right in front of me.

“I felt worthless.”

When McCracken was about 16 years old, she signed a pledge of chastity. It was a move motivated partly by her devout Christian upbringing and partly by her own love of challenge.

“I grew up very goal-oriented,” McCracken says. “Also, as an athlete, like an endurance athlete, I think, ‘I’m going to get to the finish line. Just give me some distance.'”

In the end, Ms. McCracken eased her mind, saying that instead of waiting until marriage, they would wait until they had a mutually exclusive, loving relationship. In her 20s, McCracken thought she had found a relationship with a man in the military. After nine months of dating, she told him she felt ready to have sex.

He said he wasn’t interested.

McCracken says his reaction shattered her confidence and began a short-term relationship that lasted several years. McCracken believes that by idealizing men she knew were not right for her, she was sabotaging herself from future long-term relationships and from feeling hurt and rejected.

“I just kind of rewinded it,” she says. “Like, ‘Okay, I’m just going to date a bunch of people who are never going to commit to me. That way I don’t have to, for example, risk breaking my heart and go on dates again.’

In 2014, McCracken, then 36, appeared on Katie Couric’s talk show for a segment about late virginity. McCracken said Couric gave him some tough advice when the cameras weren’t rolling.

A message from the organizer? Ditch the “fairy tale princess syndrome” and just have sex. No knight in shining armor will come to sweep you off your feet.

“It really felt like a slap in the face,” McCracken said. Couric did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

McCracken says Couric’s words didn’t ring true for her either. As it turns out, McCracken wasn’t sabotaging her romantic life because he thought she was a princess. Quite the opposite.

“I felt it was unfair,” McCracken says. “That’s the pattern I’ve been in for years.”

How Amanda McCracken found love

Ultimately, Ms. McCracken wisely dealt with her limerence problem, but it took a long time to cure it. Therapy helped. She recalls her therapist having her write in her diary, “I am ready and worthy of a deep, intimate, loving relationship.”

And in the end, such a relationship found her.

McCracken met David Butler at a local rooftop bar in Boulder, Colorado. At the time, Butler had just gotten divorced after 18 years of marriage. For McCracken, their romance felt like a slow burn and wasn’t what she was used to.

After nine months of dating, the couple traveled to Huahine Island in French Polynesia. According to Tahiti Islands Travel, the island means “women’s womb” in English. She thought it was a good place to lose her virginity. Butler proposed on the same trip.

McCracken said Butler’s perseverance showed her how special he was.

McCracken and Butler now have a 5-year-old daughter. She is enjoying married life and motherhood. She still has that “aspirational energy,” she says, but now she channels it in healthier ways: writing, traveling, and other projects.

So, was it worth the wait?

“I’m not going to say I’m proud,” she says. “Not really. But I feel like in my story, I ultimately stayed true to what I set out to do…I’m still the same person with goals and aspirations and looking to the future. But I’m also much more able to sit in the present and be grateful for what I have.”

Why spring is one of the best times to buy an EV

  • Fluctuations in gasoline prices are causing more car buyers to consider purchasing electric vehicles.
  • Spring is considered a good time to purchase an EV due to the increase in off-lease models.
  • Automakers offered an average discount of nearly $8,000 on new electric vehicles in March.

Fluctuations in gas prices are causing car buyers to consider electric vehicles, and now may be one of the best times to buy one.

Recharged.com says spring is the best time to buy a new or used EV, as there is “typically a wave of off-lease EVs from March to May.”

“The three-year contract signed at the beginning of the EV boom is expiring,” the website states. “Shoppers are trading in older EVs for models with the latest technology and longer range. As the weather gets warmer, it’s easier to plan test drives and road trips. The result: Good selection and variety, but prices can be a little higher.”

The website states that the only times of year that may be good to buy an EV are late fall and early winter. The reason for this is that “cold weather exacerbates range anxiety and reduces the number of casual shoppers visiting the market.”

How much will automakers discount EVs this spring?

The average discount on a new electric vehicle in March was nearly $8,000, according to Cox Automotive. This is as big a discount as the previous $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs, which President Donald Trump and Congress eliminated in September 2025.

Cox Automotive said, “In March, incentives for EVs increased, leading to an improvement in the pace of sales.”

Last month, the average incentive for new EVs was 14.6% of the average EV transaction price of $54,508. Cox Automotive said the discount is “more than double the industry average and an increase from February’s average EV price of 14.2%.”

Cox Automotive added, “One year ago, the average incentive package for a new EV was equal to 12.9% of the average EV price.”

The average incentive was $10,446.12 in December, as automakers tried to woo shoppers disappointed by the loss of federal tax credits in the first quarter in more than a decade.

The average price of a new electric car in March was $54,508. According to Recurrentauto.com, the average price of a used EV is $34,821.

According to the website, a used EV is one year newer and has 30,000 fewer miles than a similarly priced used gasoline car.
