On Tuesday, July 7, a federal immigration enforcement officer shot and killed a Mexican immigrant in Houston, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed by ICE agents shortly before 7 a.m. in Texas City’s East End neighborhood after they tried to stop him in a “targeted enforcement operation,” an agency spokesperson said.
ICE officials said Salgado Araujo “attempted to evade arrest” and “used a deadly weapon on his vehicle in an attempt to run over” ICE officers. A spokesperson said the deputy fired his weapon “in self-defense.” Salgado Araujo was taken to a hospital, where he died.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for more information about what led ICE agents to pursue Salgado Araujo.
The incident in Texas comes after Homeland Security officials shot and killed several people across the United States this year. Officials responsible for enforcing U.S. immigration laws have launched an aggressive campaign under President Donald Trump.
Among those shot and killed by federal agents was Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, a Mexican man who ICE officials said tried to hit a federal agent with his car in a Chicago suburb in September.
American citizens Alex Preti and Renee Good were shot and killed in Minneapolis in January.
The defense of a Department of Homeland Security employee in the face of a mass shooting has caused serious turmoil at the department. DHS officials claimed Good tried to use his car to hit an immigration officer in an act of “domestic terrorism.” Officials claimed that Preti was in possession of a gun and was also planning to carry out an act of “domestic terrorism” before being taken into custody by investigators.
The Texas shooting is believed to be the first fatal shooting by an ICE agent since Preti and Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin were in office.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
