She lost her virginity at the age of 41. The reason, she says, is because of limerence.

0

From the outside looking in, Amanda McCracken’s dating life in her 20s and 30s probably looked like the dating lives of many other young people.

She had been through a series of situations, one-off dates, and affairs. But unlike many other adults, McCracken’s short-term relationships lacked sex. The journalist and author, now 48, said she didn’t lose her virginity (which she defines as sexual intercourse) until she was 41.

McCracken wasn’t abstaining from sex for religious reasons, but she says it may have started out that way. Rather, she attributes her decades of celibacy to an addiction to limerence, the intense passion that often accompanies early relationships.

McCracken said her focus led her to pursue unavailable men, which kept her from finding a committed relationship, which kept her from having sex. The author details her journey with limerence and late virginity in her book, When Longing Becomes Lover: A True Story of Overcoming Limerence to Find True Love from Infatuation, Rejection, and Perfectionism, released in February.

“I waited until I was 41 to have sex, and I waited for a committed, loving relationship,” McCracken says. “What I realized, perhaps in my late 30s, was that I was basically sabotaging my chances at healthy, committed, loving relationships by dating people who were emotionally and physically unavailable. And because of that, I was staying in a familiar place of longing for what I didn’t have. … It was the longing itself that was keeping me from seeing the potentially healthy relationships that were right in front of me.

“I felt worthless.”

When McCracken was about 16 years old, she signed a pledge of chastity. It was a move motivated partly by her devout Christian upbringing and partly by her own love of challenge.

“I grew up very goal-oriented,” McCracken says. “Also, as an athlete, like an endurance athlete, I think, ‘I’m going to get to the finish line. Just give me some distance.'”

In the end, Ms. McCracken eased her mind, saying that instead of waiting until marriage, they would wait until they had a mutually exclusive, loving relationship. In her 20s, McCracken thought she had found a relationship with a man in the military. After nine months of dating, she told him she felt ready to have sex.

He said he wasn’t interested.

McCracken says his reaction shattered her confidence and began a short-term relationship that lasted several years. McCracken believes that by idealizing men she knew were not right for her, she was sabotaging herself from future long-term relationships and from feeling hurt and rejected.

“I just kind of rewinded it,” she says. “Like, ‘Okay, I’m just going to date a bunch of people who are never going to commit to me. That way I don’t have to, for example, risk breaking my heart and go on dates again.’

In 2014, McCracken, then 36, appeared on Katie Couric’s talk show for a segment about late virginity. McCracken said Couric gave him some tough advice when the cameras weren’t rolling.

A message from the organizer? Ditch the “fairy tale princess syndrome” and just have sex. No knight in shining armor will come to sweep you off your feet.

“It really felt like a slap in the face,” McCracken said. Couric did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

McCracken says Couric’s words didn’t ring true for her either. As it turns out, McCracken wasn’t sabotaging her romantic life because he thought she was a princess. Quite the opposite.

“I felt it was unfair,” McCracken says. “That’s the pattern I’ve been in for years.”

How Amanda McCracken found love

Ultimately, Ms. McCracken wisely dealt with her limerence problem, but it took a long time to cure it. Therapy helped. She recalls her therapist having her write in her diary, “I am ready and worthy of a deep, intimate, loving relationship.”

And in the end, such a relationship found her.

McCracken met David Butler at a local rooftop bar in Boulder, Colorado. At the time, Butler had just gotten divorced after 18 years of marriage. For McCracken, their romance felt like a slow burn and wasn’t what she was used to.

After nine months of dating, the couple traveled to Huahine Island in French Polynesia. According to Tahiti Islands Travel, the island means “women’s womb” in English. She thought it was a good place to lose her virginity. Butler proposed on the same trip.

McCracken said Butler’s perseverance showed her how special he was.

McCracken and Butler now have a 5-year-old daughter. She is enjoying married life and motherhood. She still has that “aspirational energy,” she says, but now she channels it in healthier ways: writing, traveling, and other projects.

So, was it worth the wait?

“I’m not going to say I’m proud,” she says. “Not really. But I feel like in my story, I ultimately stayed true to what I set out to do…I’m still the same person with goals and aspirations and looking to the future. But I’m also much more able to sit in the present and be grateful for what I have.”

Why spring is one of the best times to buy an EV

  • Fluctuations in gasoline prices are causing more car buyers to consider purchasing electric vehicles.
  • Spring is considered a good time to purchase an EV due to the increase in off-lease models.
  • Automakers offered an average discount of nearly $8,000 on new electric vehicles in March.

Fluctuations in gas prices are causing car buyers to consider electric vehicles, and now may be one of the best times to buy one.

Recharged.com says spring is the best time to buy a new or used EV, as there is “typically a wave of off-lease EVs from March to May.”

“The three-year contract signed at the beginning of the EV boom is expiring,” the website states. “Shoppers are trading in older EVs for models with the latest technology and longer range. As the weather gets warmer, it’s easier to plan test drives and road trips. The result: Good selection and variety, but prices can be a little higher.”

The website states that the only times of year that may be good to buy an EV are late fall and early winter. The reason for this is that “cold weather exacerbates range anxiety and reduces the number of casual shoppers visiting the market.”

How much will automakers discount EVs this spring?

The average discount on a new electric vehicle in March was nearly $8,000, according to Cox Automotive. This is as big a discount as the previous $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs, which President Donald Trump and Congress eliminated in September 2025.

Cox Automotive said, “In March, incentives for EVs increased, leading to an improvement in the pace of sales.”

Last month, the average incentive for new EVs was 14.6% of the average EV transaction price of $54,508. Cox Automotive said the discount is “more than double the industry average and an increase from February’s average EV price of 14.2%.”

Cox Automotive added, “One year ago, the average incentive package for a new EV was equal to 12.9% of the average EV price.”

The average incentive was $10,446.12 in December, as automakers tried to woo shoppers disappointed by the loss of federal tax credits in the first quarter in more than a decade.

The average price of a new electric car in March was $54,508. According to Recurrentauto.com, the average price of a used EV is $34,821.

According to the website, a used EV is one year newer and has 30,000 fewer miles than a similarly priced used gasoline car.

Davis said the incident is being investigated as a possible murder-suicide and that Justin Fairfax appears to have shot and killed his wife, Serena Fairfax, before taking his own life.

“This is an ongoing domestic dispute over what appears to be a complicated and messy divorce,” Davis said at a news conference outside her home.

Police Chief Chris Cosgriff said officers were called to a home on Guinevere Drive just after midnight for a death investigation report, and when officers arrived they found the couple dead inside.

Davis said the couple’s teenage son and daughter were home at the time of the shooting but were not harmed.

“This is terrible news for the family and definitely a traumatic event for the children,” Davis said.

Pope delivers powerful new remarks amid feud with President Trump

Pope Leo

play

In a speech in Cameroon on April 16, Pope Leo

“Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging what is sacred into darkness and filth,” Leo said during a tour of four African countries. “This is a world turned upside down, an exploitation of God’s creation, and must be condemned and rejected by every honest conscience.”

The pope’s remarks came in the wake of attacks on social media in which President Trump shared AI-generated images depicting himself as Jesus-like and other religious images. President Trump called Leo “soft on crime” on April 12, and criticized him in another post for defending the Iran war on April 14.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born head of the Catholic Church, was highly critical of armed conflict and reiterated his position on April 16, saying, “The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes but a moment to destroy, but a lifetime is often not enough to rebuild.”

Earlier this week, Leo said, “I have no fear of the Trump administration and I will not speak out loud about the gospel message.”

Both President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, who is Catholic, have been increasingly critical of the Pope, sparking a backlash from conservative Catholics in the United States.

Internationally, the Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mulally endorsed the Pope on April 16, urging the Anglican Church to follow his lead. Mulally plans to travel to Rome in late April to meet with Leo.

Mulally, who was appointed in October as the first female archbishop to lead the Church of England, said: “I join the courageous call of my brother in Christ, Pope XIV, for a kingdom of peace.”

“The human cost of war is incalculable as innocent people are killed and displaced, families torn apart and futures destroyed. It is the call of all Christians and all people of faith and goodwill to work and pray for peace. We must also appeal to all those entrusted with political authority to pursue all possible peaceful and just means of resolving conflicts.”

Chipotle is bringing back its buy-one-get-one sale on popular entrees to celebrate the start of the NHL playoffs.

The restaurant chain said the offer is available to all customers wearing a hockey jersey at participating restaurants in the U.S. and Canada after 3:00 p.m. local time on Monday, April 20. This is the sixth consecutive year the company has offered this contract.

“Our Hockey Jersey BOGO has become a tradition that brings fans together for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and reflects our deep connection to the hockey community,” Chipotle Interim Chief Marketing Officer Stephanie Perdue said in a news release. The chain announced last year that its long-standing partnership with the National Hockey League had been extended.

The NHL regular season is scheduled to end on April 16th, and the playoffs are scheduled to begin on April 18th.

Chipotle unveils first-ever hockey jersey as part of promotion

In addition to the BOGO deal, Chipotle is introducing its first-ever limited edition hockey jerseys, giving Chipotle Rewards members a chance to win a sweater.

Chipotle said only 75 jerseys will be available exclusively through the Chipotle Rewards Exchange. From Saturday, April 18th through Saturday, May 2nd, Rewards members will be able to redeem 10 Rewards points for an entry to win one jersey. Each Rewards member can enter up to 20 times.

The jerseys bear the number “53,” which Chipotle says pays homage to the 53 real ingredients in its core menu. The name on the back says “Chipper,” which the chain says is a reference to Chipotle that has been popularized by hockey players and fans on social media over the past few years.

Airlines warn of running low on jet fuel ahead of summer vacation

A global fuel shortage linked to tensions near the Strait of Hormuz could lead to fewer flights and higher travel costs.

play

  • A global oil shortage caused by the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt summer travel.
  • European airports are warning of a general shortage of jet fuel that could affect flight operations within weeks.
  • Some international airlines have already canceled flights, and U.S. airlines may also reduce their schedules if the situation continues.

If you’re heading abroad for vacation this summer, you may need to prepare for some disruption.

The International European Airports Council, a trade group for airfield operators, has warned that the global oil shortage caused by the Iran war could start impacting flight operations within weeks.

“(A) systemic jet fuel shortage is becoming a reality for the EU,” the group’s letter to the EU’s Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism said, as reported by CNBC. The letter also warned that summer travel in Europe could be affected.

Ticket prices for most U.S. airlines have not yet been affected, but the lack of supply is already pushing up fuel costs and some airlines are raising fees for things like checked baggage.

In addition to rising prices, experts have warned that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has already cut off about 20% of the world’s oil supplies, could lead to even deeper cuts in flight schedules, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

“We are currently in a global jet fuel shortage,” Giacomo Santangelo, a senior lecturer in economics at Fordham University, told USA TODAY. He noted that airlines such as SAS and Air New Zealand have already canceled flights, and US-based United Airlines has indicated it could cut its flight schedule by up to 5% in the third quarter if fuel prices do not fall and supply increases.

When the Trump administration took office, force your own blockThe closure of the already closed strait makes it increasingly likely that a global oil shock will be prolonged.

“The last time we had a situation like this was in the 1970s,” Santangelo said. “I don’t want to sound like something exists, but in the 1970s there was gasoline rationing.”

Diane Merians Penaloza, a lecturer at the City University of New York School of Professional Studies, previously told USA TODAY that a prolonged energy crisis could significantly reduce global air travel.

“If the Strait of Hormuz were to close for the next 12 to 18 months, the number of available seats worldwide would be reduced by 30 seats, perhaps 40%,” he said.

Santangelo said there is so much uncertainty surrounding the global fuel market that travelers should prepare for possible disruptions and flight cancellations during the summer holidays.

“You have to be flexible. You have to understand. Don’t stick to your schedule. It’s subject to change,” he said.

While airlines have historically prioritized domestic flights that depart multiple times a day in case of cancellations rather than cutting back on long-haul flights, Santangelo cautioned that there is no guarantee that the same pattern will continue in the current crisis, especially when airlines are unsure whether they will be able to refuel at overseas airports to operate flights back to the United States.

“This is a unique situation that we haven’t experienced in a long time, so I can’t say how much confidence we can have that this type of behavior will continue in the future,” he said.

Director Steven Spielberg says ‘Disclosure Day’ is closer to truth than fiction

0

play

LAS VEGAS – Director Steven Spielberg has confirmed that his new movie “Disclosure Day” will be about aliens, debuting new footage at Universal Studios’ presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 15.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve been interested in what happens in the night sky,” he told the audience, saying the possibility of extraterrestrial life stimulates his creativity.

Spielberg’s return to the summer blockbuster will see Josh O’Connor’s Daniel Kellner fight alongside Emily Blunt and Colman Domingo to uncover the existence of extraterrestrial life. Connor and Blunt will play characters possessed by aliens. Colin Firth appears to be leading a shadow government organization tasked with keeping the alien presence a secret.

The creator of “Jaws” said the film is “much closer to truth than fiction.”

He said he was intrigued again, pointing to a 2017 New York Times report on the existence of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, returning to a subject he had explored in “ET” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

“I truly believe this film will answer questions and raise many questions,” Spielberg said.

The multiple Oscar winner said he is very protective of a film’s third act because young audiences use marketing materials to anticipate plot points in upcoming films.

“All you need from start to finish is your seat belt,” he said.

Domingo, who introduced and interviewed Spielberg, announced that the film Titan had won the Motion Picture Association of America 250 Award.

“Steven Spielberg defines what Americans think when they think about movies,” MPA President Charles Rivkin said at the awards ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, the Oscar winner told how he became obsessed with movies and made money by screening them for charity in his childhood home in Phoenix and “charging 12 cents for popcorn.”

“There’s nothing quite like sitting in the first three rows of a movie theater and watching Cecil B. DeMille’s epic in color in Technicolor,” Spielberg said.

He called on studios to expand their theatrical slots for movies and reduce their reliance on already produced intellectual property. “If all we’re making is big name brand IP, we’re going to run out of gas, and we’re going to run out of gas quickly,” he added.

5 smart steps to avoid depleting your retirement savings

0

That’s an understandable concern, but one that can be addressed.

play

If you’re trying to save up a lot of money and move into retirement, give yourself a pat on the back. Many seniors are unable to take their retirement savings with them and must live mostly on Social Security.

But the last thing you want to do after working hard and amassing a large IRA or 401(k) balance is to watch your retirement savings slowly evaporate. Here are some important steps you can take to significantly reduce that risk.

1. Don’t prioritize spending

Many of your expenses may remain the same after you retire from your working life. But with your newfound free time, you may find yourself spending more on things like leisure and travel.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. However, it’s important to keep track of your expenses and create a budget to avoid overspending. Your budget should account for planned expenses, recurring expenses, discretionary expenses, and one-time expenses such as insurance premiums that you only pay once a year.

2. Rely on profitable growth investments

If you want your retirement savings to last, you need to invest a significant portion of your money in assets that outperform inflation. To that end, you won’t want to let go of growth stocks or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), even if they involve risks.

Many retirees maintain a 40%/60% mix of bonds and stocks in their portfolios. You may want to consider keeping at least a third of your stock portion invested in your growth vehicle.

For the rest of your stock portfolio, focus on stocks or ETFs with high dividend yields. The more income your portfolio generates, the more sustainable your portfolio is likely to be.

3. Create a withdrawal strategy that works for you

Even if you can retire with a multi-million dollar IRA or 401(k), it’s important to be careful not to withdraw too much money at any point. To do this, come up with an exit strategy based on your spending needs, traditional goals, and external sources of income.

For example, let’s say you want $120,000 a year to live comfortably. But if Social Security provides $50,000 of that, it takes some of the pressure off your savings.

Similarly, you might be able to afford to withdraw $150,000 per year. But if you want to leave a legacy, you may want to specifically limit the amount you can withdraw each year, especially if you think not leaving a legacy is just as bad as running out of funds.

4. Be prepared to be flexible.

If the stock market declines and the value of your investments declines, you are at significant risk of permanent losses and, ultimately, depletion of your funds. To avoid being hurt by market downturns in retirement, adopt a flexible mindset.

In most cases, that means cutting back on spending during market downturns or working part-time to minimize savings while waiting for a recovery. If you’re open to either option, it could be the difference between draining your savings and keeping your IRA or 401(k) intact.

5. Maintain cache buffers

Another great way to avoid having to sell your portfolio investments at a loss is to maintain a strong cash cushion. If you have the funds to cover your needs during market downturns, you won’t have to sell your investments when they drop in value.

The amount of cash you keep on hand should be determined by your income needs and willingness to work and reduce expenses if necessary. If you’re unable to work and feel like you can only afford to cut your expenses by 5% to 10% during a recession, it may be a good idea to keep two to three years’ worth of living expenses in cash.

The thought of running out of money in retirement is scary, especially if you’ve worked hard to save up your money. However, by following these steps, you can significantly reduce that risk and have more peace of mind.

Pence aide sparks drama as Georgia lieutenant governor runs as a Democrat

0

Mike Pence’s former aide, Georgia’s ousted lieutenant governor and ex-husband of Kellyanne Conway have defected from the Republican Party. They are now running for Congress as Democrats.

play

A former aide to Vice President Mike Pence announced his candidacy for Congress earlier this week, testing whether Democratic primary voters will support President Trump’s House seat.

Eagle-eyed cable news viewers may know Olivia Troy, who now spends her days as a TV commentator scolding President Donald Trump. Troy announced his candidacy in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District on April 14th. Troy will face a crowded field of candidates, including Dorothy McAuliffe, the state’s former first lady.

Mr. Troy left Mr. Trump’s orbit five years ago and became a television commentator. She left the White House for the first time in 2020 during the first Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus, and spoke about her rationale on “The View,” which has become a hotbed of hostility between China and Trump.

“Too many families are struggling to make ends meet while Washington turns a blind eye,” Troy said in an announcement video. “I don’t do it because that’s not how I live,” said Troy, who grew up in a border town in Texas, the daughter of a truck driver and Mexican immigrants.

Troy is one of the few Democratic candidates in the United States who has a past relationship with Trump and has campaigned on an anti-Trump platform. The candidates include former Georgia lieutenant governor Jeff Duncan, who is currently running for governor, and George Conway, the ex-husband of Trump aide Kellyanne Conway.

Will partisan change succeed in the Trump era?

Party switching has long been a part of American politics, but it remains to be seen how effective switching of that nature will be in the Trump era. Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist left the Republican Party and became a Democrat in 2012.

After switching parties, he lost to Republican Sen. Rick Scott in the 2014 gubernatorial election, but served three terms as a Democrat from 2017 to 2022. Later that year, he lost the gubernatorial race to current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley registered as an independent earlier this year and faces a tougher situation for his former party in California’s redistricting. Former Arizona state senator Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party and became an independent.

She did not seek re-election and was replaced by Sen. Ruben Gallego.

Duncan, a former lieutenant governor of Georgia, has faced criticism in the Georgia gubernatorial race for her past opposition to abortion access from groups such as Emily’s List, the nation’s largest network focused on electing Democratic women. The group criticized his “anti-abortion record” on its website and claimed he helped pass Georgia’s controversial six-week abortion ban in November 2022.

George Conway told CNN that in 2016, his ex-wife, who was Trump’s chief press secretary during his first term, was “crying with joy” after successfully leading the campaign of the first woman to win the White House, but “never realized how bad this guy was going to be, how bad it was going to be.” Conway is in a crowded field of candidates to replace U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler in New York’s 12th District. The race also includes John F. Kennedy’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg.

“I was a Republican, but in 2018 I realized that the Republican Party had become a cult of personality and that I could no longer stand for what I had stood for for years,” Conway said.

However, it is Troy who can distance himself the most from Mr. Trump. In her announcement video, she claimed to have voted for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, saying, “But even after Trump won, I continued to go to work.”

“Because serving your country shouldn’t be partisan,” Troy continued. “The evil I saw in the White House was astonishing. In 2020, I finally said enough.” Whether this message works remains to be seen.

But with all this attention comes intense scrutiny. And the CBS broadcast featured several high-profile mistakes, particularly in the final moments when the cameras failed to spot McIlroy and Cameron Young’s approach shots to the 18th green.

NBC Sports golf analyst Kevin Kisner was perhaps the most vocal critic, accusing rival stations of not only missing camera shots but showing recorded action that gave viewers the impression it was live.

“I was (expletive) confused the whole time trying to keep up with the CBS feed behind the scenes,” Kisner said on Barstool Sports’ golf podcast “Fore Play” on Tuesday, April 14. “They literally keep showing me (expletive) all day long what happened 10 minutes ago.”

Kisner, who worked on SiriusXM radio broadcasts, said he once texted CBS Sports announcer Colt Knost to ask him what was going on and said he preferred to follow the action on the Masters app rather than CBS’ television coverage.

“Can you imagine watching the (expletive) Super Bowl and being like, ‘Yeah, Tom Brady scored a touchdown seven minutes ago, and we’re going to act like it’s live here so the announcers can sound really smart?'” Kinser said on the podcast.

In the golf world, it’s rare to criticize another network’s coverage. But Kinser didn’t pull any punches.

“I have no idea what they’re doing. I literally have no idea. They tape every shot. It’s unbelievable. I don’t even know what the announcers call it,” Kisner said.

Jim Nantz addresses criticism of CBS’ Masters broadcast

CBS lead announcer Jim Nantz acknowledged there were some problems with Sunday’s broadcast, but defended CBS’ overall coverage.

Appearing on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, April 14, Nantz said that things like this happen on live television and that “everyone makes mistakes.”

When asked about the specific criticism of delayed coverage and not being able to see McIlroy’s final putt go into the hole, Nantz held off.

“I can’t speak to the challenges and some of the decisions and other things that people are responsible for. All I know is that our crews are the best in the industry.”

7 Free or Cheap Financial Advice Options to Help You Manage Your Money

0

play

One measure of wealth in America is an ongoing relationship with a financial advisor.

Certified financial planners, wealth managers, and their ilk tend to serve clients who have large amounts of assets to manage. These services are commonly associated with high net worth individuals, which typically means having $1 million or more in “investable” assets, excluding your home.

Similarly, many Americans with low assets don’t want to spend money on a financial planner or wealth manager. They may not think their assets are complex enough to hire a professional.

“I think a lot of people feel like they don’t have the money to spend or the assets large enough for a financial planner to manage,” said Kate Ashford, wealth management specialist at NerdWallet.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options for free and low-cost financial advice, from one-time sessions with a financial advisor to online libraries of financial tips and retirement planning calculators.

But before we introduce you to the options, let’s take a step back and think about their limitations.

First, remember the old principle. You get what you pay for.

“Do people expect free medical care, free car repairs, free legal advice? Generally not, and for good reason,” says Monica Dwyer, a certified financial planner in West Chester, Ohio. “The quality of advice tends to be reflected in the cost.”

One of the problems with free, off-the-shelf financial advice is that it’s generally generic rather than tailored to your financial situation.

Another issue: Financial needs change over time. Your session with a financial planner today may not tell you what your finances will look like in a year or two.

Those caveats aside, here are seven options for free or low-cost financial advice.

Talk to your broker or retirement plan administrator

Many online brokerages and 401(k) administrators, including Fidelity, Vanguard, and Charles Schwab, offer free or low-cost assistance to investors and retirement savers.

For example, Fidelity offers free access to licensed financial advisors, but subsequent fees vary depending on the products and services investors choose. Fidelity Go offers money management through a “robo-advisor” (see below) and charges a 0.35% annual fee for balances over $25,000.

Schwab offers its “robo-advisor” Schwab Intelligent Portfolios for free. Schwab also offers a free digital financial plan and a number of free calculators covering retirement savings, college savings, and other topics.

Please check with your bank

Many banks and credit unions offer free financial advice and financial planning resources, often available to everyone.

For example, Bank of America collects financial guidance on its Better Money Habits site. CapitalOne provides a financial success hub. USAA offers a treasure trove of financial preparation and financial advice. Citi offers a library of financial planning tools.

NerdWallet’s Ashford points out that SoFi, an online bank, offers a $10 monthly membership service called SoFi Plus that gives you unlimited access to a financial planner.

ask your employer

Many large companies partner with 401(k) providers to provide free financial advice to employees as part of their benefits packages.

Create a free financial plan

The Financial Planning Association provides free financial planning services to low-income Americans and underserved groups.

Attend a free meeting with a financial advisor

Many financial advisors will schedule an initial session with a potential client for free. It’s a good place to start and you can decide whether to move forward with a full-fledged relationship.

“We offer free initial consultations,” said Jonathan Swanberg, a certified financial planner in Houston. “Like most financial planners I know, I want to help as many people as possible.” “So we’re going to talk to a lot of people who will never pay us.”

But there’s only so much you can accomplish in one meeting. Dwyer, an Ohio CFP, believes it’s a waste of investors’ time to meet with advisors who are “never going to be involved.”

She added, “Financial guidance is not a one-time event. Markets change, tax laws change, life circumstances change. A snapshot of advice, even from a good advisor, is only as useful as the moment it is given.”

Get a “Robo-Advisor”

You may be daunted by the idea of entrusting your finances to an algorithm. However, “robo-advisors” are well-established as financial planning and investment tools.

According to Investopedia, robo-advisors are typically automated services with minimal human oversight. Your advisor may ask you questions about your financial situation and goals and make investment choices on your behalf.

These are generally cheap and open to investors by all means. NerdWallet and Bankrate both offer curated lists of the best robo-advisors.

This service is probably best suited for people with relatively simple investments and goals.

“Robo-advisors are not going to deal with sensitive issues,” Ashford said.

Consider a flat-fee advisor

Your relationship with a financial advisor doesn’t have to be forever. You can pay by the hour or at a flat rate.

If an advisor takes on a one-time project, such as creating a retirement plan, “fees can range from $2,000 to $15,000,” said Ryan Sterling, CEO of financial advisory firm NerdWallet Wealth Partners. Hourly wages can range from $150 to $1,000, he said.

The benefit of paying a flat fee to a financial planner is that you can limit your spending. If you’re looking for basic investment advice, this might be a good fit.

“If all you want to know is, ‘Is this the right mix of stocks and bonds?’ there are probably plenty of paid advisors who can answer that for you,” said Peter Lazaroff, a certified financial planner in St. Louis.

The problem with one-time financial planning meetings, Sterling said, is that financial needs change over time.

“You can charge $5,000 for a one-time plan, and you know with a high degree of certainty that it’s probably going to be phased out in six to 12 months,” he said.

Iran war disrupts mail deliveries to Middle East troops

When Dan F. heard from the daughter of a Marine aboard the USS Tripoli that the ship was running out of hygiene products, he sent care packages containing shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, and tampons, and filled every empty space with candy and snacks.

They filled the second box with Emergen C vitamin C packets (Dan’s daughter said she felt her throat was starting to hurt) and clean socks.

The boxes were shipped nearly a month ago, but neither have reached their destination. Dunn’s daughter is one of the tens of thousands of military personnel facing the same challenges who are serving in the Iran war.

Dunn asked that her daughter be called by her first name just to protect her from retaliation.

As of April, the military has indefinitely suspended mail delivery to military postal codes across the Middle East. The Army said mail already in transit to these areas is being stored at the facility.

Boxes filled with items that families like Dunn’s and community members hoped would help service members survive long deployments in the Middle East – homemade fudge, Jolly Ranchers, crossword puzzle books, playing cards, toothpaste, Girl Scout cookies, fresh socks – are left dangling.

Military claims war situation caused suspension

After the United States and Israel attacked Iran, the U.S. Postal Service suspended mail delivery to 27 military zip codes. According to the military, the war has ceased, but there is no end date in sight.

The Postal Service and Military Post Office have suspended these deliveries since early April “due to airspace closures and other logistical impacts due to the ongoing conflict,” Army spokesman Maj. Travis Shaw told USA TODAY. He said mail already in transit when the suspension took effect was being held at secure post offices or military facilities “in preparation for delivery once service resumes.”

The suspension “will remain in effect until further notice,” Shaw added. “The resumption of postal services is conditional on the reopening of airspace by civil authorities and the regional commander’s assessment of the stability of transport and circulation in the region.”

Shaw said no mail is “returned to sender” in these zip codes.

The Postal Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the delay. The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment about the mail outage and reports that some U.S. ships were running low on food.

Your luggage is waiting in your living room, stuck between destinations

Karen Turgeon, organizer of the annual Thanksgiving Care Package Drive for Military Families in Monson, Mass., quickly organized an additional drive for four local service members who were deployed to the Middle East after the outbreak of war.

None of the group’s luggage has reached its destination. Instead, the movement channeled its energy into dropping cards of encouragement and flowers at the homes of troopers’ families.

“We’re trying to cheer them up at home,” she said. “We give them envelopes with things to send so they can send them when they can.”

Dawn Penrod, treasurer of the Edgewater, Maryland-based American Legion Auxiliary Branch, said she spent an hour at the post office about two weeks ago trying to send a care package to her nephew, an Army Reserve member stationed in Bahrain.

Inside the package was a bag of little treats to ease the difficulties of long-term deployment – bars, candy, homemade fudge, Girl Scout cookies, puzzle books, pencils, pens, playing cards, and other games. The Auxiliary Chapter gave Penrod $100 for the package and postage, and her customers donated an additional $50.

But Penrod said a postal worker told her they couldn’t send anything to the military address she listed. She couldn’t even fill out the customs forms required to ship packages to military postal codes overseas. She left the post office with her package in hand.

“It’s sitting in my living room, waiting,” she said.

Penrod said other members of the auxiliary branch, which has been sending care packages to military members for decades, had never experienced delays or outages like this.

“They were always delivering mail and packages,” Penrod said. “I don’t see why we can’t do it now.”

‘Extenuating circumstances’ impact military mail delivery

Lynn Heidelbaugh, curator at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, said wars and other operations often delay the delivery of packages to deployed military personnel. She said she has never encountered a total suspension of mail delivery to military zip codes like the one currently in place, but said the lack of an official announcement, especially in the pre-Internet era, doesn’t mean there hasn’t been a mail suspension before.

“There are always extenuating circumstances,” she said. “It’s much more complex than domestic mail.”

Military Post Offices provides postal services in 76 countries, according to the Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General. The company operates 1,670 postal operations around the world and transports about 80 million pounds of mail annually, according to a fact sheet from the agency.

According to the Postal Service, non-express packages to the Middle East typically take up to 24 days to ship. In 2003, it took an average of 11 to 14 days for mail to reach military personnel deployed to the Iraq War, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.

Families say there is a shortage of food on board.

Not receiving care packages is especially worrying for some families who sent extra snacks to loved ones on ships in the Middle East. They are worried about messages from loved ones that there is not enough food and people are starving.

When the USS Tripoli reached a pocket of internet service, Dan F.’s daughter told him in sporadic messages that members on board were distributing food. Fresh produce was nowhere to be found, she told him.

A photo of the meal aboard the warship, shared by his daughter, showed a two-thirds empty lunch tray with a small scoop of shredded meat and a folded tortilla. Dunn said after his daughter told him the ship’s coffee machine was broken, he stopped drinking coffee in solidarity with what she was going through.

“We have the strongest military in the world,” said Dunn, 63, who also served in the Marines. “We shouldn’t run out of food and we shouldn’t be unable to receive mail on board.”

“The only victory we had over our enemies was feeding our people.”

A Texas mother whose son, a Navy sailor, is also on board the Tripoli, said she panicked when she heard her son was hungry on board. Her family has now spent at least $2,000 on care packages, but her son has received nothing. The mother requested anonymity for fear of retribution against her son.

In an exchange of messages with the sailor shared with USA TODAY, the sailor said military personnel on the ship eat when they can and that if one person receives more food than another, they share it equally.

In a March 11 message, he wrote that the crew would not be in port until the ship returned from its mission because supplies would be “very low.”

“Morale will be at an all-time low,” he wrote.

The Tripoli has been at sea for more than a month since leaving its home port in Japan to take part in the Iran war. According to U.S. Central Command, the 3,500 sailors and marines aboard the Tripoli and two accompanying warships are currently tasked with reinforcing the U.S. blockade on ships leaving Iranian ports.

Other warships remain at sea much longer. On April 15, USS Gerald Ford broke the post-Cold War record for longest aircraft carrier deployment of 295 days. On March 23, the aircraft carrier withdrew to Naval Support Operations Base Souda Bay on Crete for maintenance work. The military said there was a laundry fire on the ship and there was a problem with the plumbing.

Karen Erskine Valentine, a church pastor in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, said she was concerned after hearing from a community member whose son was in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln about the poor quality of the food on board. The Abraham Lincoln was one of two aircraft carriers sent to the region, along with the USS Gerald Ford. A third USS George HW Bush is approaching.

A photo sent by a soldier to his family of a mid-April dinner aboard the ship shows a few boiled carrots, dried meat patties and gray chunks of processed meat.

“The food is bland, there’s not much of it and I’m always hungry,” Erskine-Valentine said. “It breaks your heart.”

The community packed and sent 18 boxes to seafarers to share with them. She sent 4 more boxes on April 15th.

“I announced that they needed love and nourishment,” she said. “We collected 18 boxes within two days.”

Sending the boxes isn’t cheap, she said, costing at least $540 just for shipping.

According to post office tracking, six of the packages arrived in Tokyo on April 14th. They have not yet reached their destination.

The Clippers parted ways with the 40-year-old guard in December 2025, but Paul clearly continued to keep an eye on the team in the months that followed.

He shared his famous meme of a man in funeral clothes shortly after the Clippers’ season-ending 126-121 loss to the Golden State Warriors on April 15.

Paul was officially traded to the Toronto Raptors on February 5th as part of a three-team trade. He was waived by the Raptors and retired on February 13th. A 12-time All-Star, Paul spent 21 years in the NBA, including parts of seven seasons with the Clippers.

He played in 16 games this season, averaging 2.9 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game.

The Clippers finished the regular season with a record of 42 wins and 40 losses, placing them in third place in the Pacific Division.

Mercedes-Benz has begun recalling more than 24,000 vehicles due to a defective propeller shaft that could cause the vehicle to lose power while driving.

Mercedes-Benz customers outside the United States reported “loss of propulsion without warning” in October 2025, according to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Other customers reported hearing strange noises and feeling vibrations before losing propulsion.

After carrying out some tests, the German car brand found that noise and vibrations do not necessarily occur in all cases.

“Therefore, on March 27, 2026, MBAG determined that the potential safety risks could not be eliminated and decided to implement a recall,” the report said. “MBAG is currently aware of 30 warranty claim reports received in the U.S. from January 2022 to April 2025.”

Mercedes-Benz authorized dealers were notified of the voluntary recall campaign on April 10th, and affected customers will be notified by June 2nd.

Jerry Springer’s talk show producer reveals secrets of TV fights

0

“The Jerry Springer Show,” which aired from 1991 to 2018, became synonymous with trash television thanks to its take on taboo social topics. Now the producers are revealing everything in the documentary series “Hollywood Demons”.

From the outside looking in, “The Jerry Springer Show” was a Pandora’s box of outlandish personalities and chaotic corners. But as it turns out, there was a solution to this madness.

While appearing in the documentary series “Hollywood Demons,” the producers of the controversial daytime talk show spoke candidly about the behind-the-scenes process that created the show’s scandal, according to People magazine and Entertainment Weekly.

The “Investigation Discovery” series aims to expose the underbelly of pop culture’s most infamous moments through in-depth interviews and industry analysis. The show’s upcoming second season will conclude with “The Jerry Springer Show,” “Saved by the Bell,” the deaths of celebrities Prince and Matthew Perry and other cultural touchstones.

“Jerry Springer had no idea about this story until we came to tape,” producer Jimmy “The Hat” Hyman said in advance footage obtained by People. “And that might have actually been helpful, just for the fact that he probably didn’t want to see what we put together, you know?”

“The Jerry Springer Show,” hosted by former politician and journalist Jerry Springer, started out as a full-fledged political show modeled after Phil Donahue, but ratings were initially low. It quickly turned into a tabloid extravaganza with even more outrageous guests in each episode.

The talk show, which aired from 1991 to 2018, became synonymous with trash TV thanks to its coverage of taboo social topics, from incest and adultery to self-harm and sex work. The series frequently featured profanity, physical fights, and scantily clad guests.

According to People, the talk show’s other producer, Leena Friedman Watts, gave a candid interview to Springer shortly before his death in 2023, asking him if he knew “what it took to get that show on the air.”

“Yes, I knew what you guys did,” Springer told Watts. “But I was so far removed from what actually happened, including not knowing beforehand. They never told me who the guests would be.”

‘The Jerry Springer Show’ producer says talk shows encourage on-screen conflict

Houston Curtis, an associate producer on “The Jerry Springer Show” who also appears on “Hollywood Demons,” revealed how the talk show’s production staff often incite conflict between guests.

“I knew right away what the secret was,” Curtis said, according to preliminary footage obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “Suppose I have two brothers who are fighting. When you’re preparing for a guest, you say to one of them, “If your brother says something you don’t like, you can yell at him, you can stand up in his face, you can spit on him, but whatever you do, don’t hit him.” And you don’t say anything about it to anyone else.”

he continued. “If one person stands up and spits in someone’s face, without giving any instructions to the other person, the other person will drag the person away and beat the hell out of them. A fight ensued.”

Part of the series’ success came from its trafficking in racial stereotypes, homophobia, transphobia, and othering of disabled people. Guests from marginalized and vulnerable communities were often the subject of harsh jokes and were sometimes subjected to actual violence (whether staged or unplanned).

“It’s so hypocritical to say, ‘That show sucks,'” Springer previously said of his talk show. “I always said it’s stupid. It’s just camping. It’s chewing gum. It’s an hour of escapism. There’s no real value to it.”

“Hollywood Demons” Season 2 will premiere on April 20th on Investigation Discovery.

Sotomayor apologizes for Kavanaugh comments

0

play

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has apologized for “inappropriate” and “hurtful” comments she made about her colleague, Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“I regret my hurtful comments and have apologized to my colleagues,” Sotomayor said in a statement on April 15.

Her statement came about a week after she criticized Kavanaugh’s opinion in the court’s 2025 decision on immigration-related moratoriums in Los Angeles. The suspension sparked widespread protests in California, with many accusing it of racial profiling.

Over a dissent by three liberal justices, including Justice Sotomayor, the court blocked a lower court’s ruling that federal agents must have reasonable suspicion that the person they are interrogating is in the country illegally.

“In that incident, a colleague wrote, ‘This is only a temporary suspension,'” Sotomayor said in a public appearance at the University of Kansas School of Law. “This is coming from a guy whose parents were professionals. You probably don’t really know anyone who buys time.”

Sotomayor added that of those detained, “no one is paying them for the time they are taken away.” “That’s the difference between what he and the kids eat that night and maybe a cold dinner,” she told the audience, Bloomberg Law reported.

In his opinion for the court, Kavanaugh said legal immigrants’ contact with immigration officials is “usually brief” and affected individuals are “promptly released.”

The legal challenge comes after the Trump administration ramped up immigration enforcement across California starting in June 2025, expanding from people with criminal records to broader sweeps of anyone in the country without authorization.

In his 2025 dissent, Sotomayor slammed the court’s decision.

“We should not live in a country where the government can arrest anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and works for low wages,” Sotomayor wrote. “Rather than stand by and watch our constitutional freedoms disappear, I will oppose it.”

“It’s shocking to see a justice criticize a colleague outside of an opinion, in public, and in somewhat personal terms,” court observer and attorney David Rutt said after Sotomayor’s remarks in Kansas last week.

“While the justices do pursue each other in their opinions, they typically ‘keep it on paper,’ meaning they do not address their grievances in other contexts,” Rutt recently wrote on Substack.

In public remarks on April 9, Sotomayor said he had civil relationships with “virtually all” of his fellow judges and considered many of them friends.

Sotomayor said his experience as a trial court judge has helped him understand the real people behind the cases he now decides, but he’s not sure all of his colleagues understand them.

“When you read the transcript, you still see people,” Sotomayor said, referring to the transcript of proceedings held in trial court, where individuals involved in the underlying events of the case can testify. “I don’t know how many of my colleagues do that.”
