U.S. 30-year bonds hit their highest since 2007. What does this mean to you?

0

play

Amid growing concerns about inflation in financial markets, 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds hit their highest yield in about 20 years on May 19th.

The yield on the 30-year bond was about 5.2%, the highest since 2007. Bond yields (interest rates) rise when prices fall and vice versa.

Traders and investors have been selling off bonds of all durations because the value of the bonds they offer declines as prices rise across the economy. Since the start of the Iran war, inflation has skyrocketed, increasing the prices of goods needed for energy and transportation.

Steve Blitz, chief U.S. economist at GlobalData, said the large increase had no immediate implications for consumers. Because most mortgages are only held for about 6 to 7 years, mortgage interest rates are lower than 10-year bonds. Credit cards and other similar products use short-term interest rates.

Blitz expects long-term investors such as pension funds will begin to gravitate toward 30-year bonds to ensure higher returns for account holders if yields remain high. But he pointed out that that means they sell shares to free up funds.

U.S. stocks have been under pressure in recent days for other reasons, in part because yields have been rising. Rising borrowing costs are weighing on some fast-growing companies that dominate the stock market. But all levels of government, from local park districts to the U.S. Treasury, would also have to pay more at the expense of taxpayers.

New agreement prohibits IRS from auditing President Trump, his family and companies

President Donald Trump has been at loggerheads with the IRS for years over an audit of whether he and his business empire paid enough taxes.

play

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department’s agreement with President Donald Trump over leaked tax returns includes assurances that the tax agency will no longer pursue any tax liability claims it may have against Trump, his family or his companies.

The nine-page settlement agreement released by the Justice Department on May 18 establishes a $1.776 billion fund for “victims of illegal activity and weapons use,” but makes no mention of the administration’s efforts to go after Trump, his family, and his companies over a long-standing tax dispute.

On May 19, the Justice Department posted another one-page document on its website containing new details and signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. It includes a seemingly sweeping release that “permanently enjoins and prohibits” the Internal Revenue Service from “prosecuting or pursuing” any effort to determine whether President Trump and any other party are responsible for unpaid or underpaid taxes, interest, attorneys’ fees, or costs incurred by the government.

Trump sued the IRS for $10 billion in January, alleging that a contractor leaked his tax returns, even though he had promised to release them if he ran for president since 2014.

In 2024, the New York Times reported that an IRS audit could cost President Trump more than $100 million.

Democratic Party fiercely demands benefits at Blanche hearing

When Blanche appeared at a May 19 appropriations hearing, the fund was sharply criticized by Senate Democrats who said the fund was intended to benefit taxpayers to Trump’s political allies.

The committee’s ranking Democrat, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, told Blanche he believed the fund was “an outrageous and unprecedented slush fund that you set up” to settle Trump’s lawsuits.

Like other Democrats, Van Hollen noted that Branch served as Trump’s personal attorney in several criminal cases.

Blanche insisted the fund is nonpartisan.

“This is not limited to Republicans,” Blanche told members of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees Justice Department spending. “There are no limits on claims.”

Blanche said “anyone” can apply for benefits, including those convicted of attacking police during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

“Just a simple question, are individuals who assaulted Capitol Police officers eligible for this fund?” Van Hollen asked at one point. “Anyone in this country is eligible to apply if they believe they are a victim of weaponization,” Blanche responded.

“Would there be a rule that if you assault a Capitol Police officer or commit a violent crime, you’re not eligible? Why not make that a rule?” Van Hollen asked Blanche.

“Because I’m not one of the five commissioners making the rules,” Blanche replied.

“You’re appointing four of the five commissioners, aren’t you, Attorney General?” Mr. Van Hollen said.

“I appoint all five members,” replied M. Blanche.

But Mr. Blanche would not commit to providing guidance to his appointees on whether to bar the applications of anyone connected to Jan. 6, including those convicted of violent acts against police officers protecting the Capitol, under repeated questions from Democrats.

“I don’t think it’s the attorney general’s job to encourage commissioners to do something or not do something,” Blanche said.

Afterwards, Blanche said anyone could apply for compensation under the new fund, even President Biden’s son Hunter. He also said that people brought before various grand juries in Trump’s criminal cases, including a Mar-a-Lago gardener and a Secret Service agent, are good candidates for compensation because they endured “use of force.”

Chiefs wide receiver tests positive for THC, violates parole

0

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Lachie Rice was ordered to serve 30 days in jail for violating the terms of his probation, according to Dallas County, Texas, court records reviewed by USA TODAY Sports.

According to court records filed May 19, Rice tested positive for THC and was taken into custody. Rice will be held without bail and will be eligible for release on June 16, 2026, according to court records. The Chiefs, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, have scheduled voluntary OTAs (May 26-28, June 1-3) and mandatory minicamp (June 9-11) in the meantime.

Mr. Rice pleaded guilty on July 17, 2025, to two third-degree felonies – crash with serious bodily injury and racing on a freeway causing bodily injury, stemming from an incident on a freeway near Dallas on March 30, 2024, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation. The 26-year-old was also suspended for the first six games of the 2025 season under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Rice will not serve any jail time, and ESPN reported that the Southern Methodist product is serving his original 30-day sentence.

Mr. Rice also had to pay restitution for the victim’s out-of-pocket medical expenses in excess of $115,000. The victims also filed multiple civil lawsuits against Rice. Rice was driving a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV and was traveling at an estimated speed of 190 mph seconds before the crash.

In a statement released through his lawyer at the time of his initial sentencing, Rice said he “deeply regrets” the harm and damage caused by the accident.

“I have had many sleepless nights thinking about the harm my actions have caused. I will continue to do everything within my power to ensure that everyone affected recovers. Please obey speed limits, drive safely and drive wisely,” Rice said.

ACA insurance deductibles skyrocket as people seek cheaper options

0

play

The expiration of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced subsidies leaves millions of Americans who wanted to maintain insurance in 2026 with expensive options. Stay with the intermediate Silver plan and pay a higher monthly fee, or downgrade to less expensive coverage.

An analysis released May 19 suggests that many people switched to plans with lower monthly premiums, but higher deductibles, or the amount they must pay before most coverage kicks in.

The average deductible for ACA plans will reach $3,786 in 2026, an increase of more than $1,000 from the previous year, according to the health policy nonprofit KFF.

Nearly 4 million Americans have left mid-tier silver plans, with a total of 9.8 million enrollees, according to KFF. Meanwhile, enrollment in lower-level bronze plans reached 9.2 million, up nearly 2 million from a year ago.

How many Americans will lose their ACA coverage?

It’s still unclear how many Americans have already opted out or are planning to opt out of the ACA, known as Obamacare.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported on January 28 that approximately 23 million Americans will be enrolled in ACA insurance in 2026, down from 24.2 million in January 2025.

However, these numbers also include many people who were automatically re-enrolled. If these consumers don’t pay their monthly premiums, which KFF says will increase by an average of 58% in 2026 without enhanced subsidies, their coverage will eventually be cut off. CMS is not expected to report these numbers until later this year.

About 86% of enrollees paid their monthly premiums in January, according to Wakely Consulting Group. The consultant analyzed data from insurance companies in more than 30 states and estimated that ACA enrollment this year will be 17% to 26% lower than last year.

KFF predicted that nearly 5 million people will drop their ACA coverage this year. KFF’s analysis was based on Wakeley’s estimates and federal data.

Cynthia Cox, KFF’s vice president and ACA program director, said the coverage losses “seem to be what people expected.” “That means millions of people could drop their ACA coverage because the premium tax credit will not be strengthened.”

But some critics of the ACA say other factors may be to blame for the decline in enrollment. Paragon Institute, a conservative think tank, said tougher premium subsidies and lax oversight during the coronavirus pandemic may have facilitated millions of fraudulent registrations.

Beyond ACA coverage, Americans are widely concerned about health care costs as they struggle to pay for other living expenses, such as rising gas prices and housing costs.

According to an April Gallup poll, 6 in 10 Americans worry they won’t be able to cover their medical bills if they have a serious accident or illness. Almost half are concerned about day-to-day costs.

Couple refrains from restaurants and vacations due to Obamacare costs

Some people are struggling to pay for ACA insurance because their monthly bills are significantly higher.

In 2025, Kelly Berry and her husband, who live in Wisconsin, had an individual bronze insurance plan with a fully subsidized $7,500 deductible. This year, they’re paying a total of $2,300 a month for a plan with an $8,000 deductible.

Berry and her husband are self-employed, but their income is slightly too high to qualify for ACA subsidies, which are meant for people with incomes up to four times the federal poverty level.

Berry said she’s keeping her bronze-level plan because “I can’t find a cheaper plan and I’m not going to go without insurance.”

But she said it’s a struggle. Eliminated landscaping costs such as removing dead bushes and trees from the garden. They have no vacation plans other than visiting their elderly parents. They avoid eating out and scrutinize every grocery bill.

“It’s not an easy way to cut expenses and find that extra $2,300,” Berry says. “Every time we pay a bill, such as a mortgage, credit card, or health insurance premium, we need to monitor our bank accounts to make sure the money we need is in the right place.”

Michelle Obama talks about parenting Sasha and Malia Obama in the White House

Michelle Obama has had to fight to keep her daughters’ lives normal while living in the White House, including pushing back against a “crazy” schedule.

play

Michelle Obama is opening up about life in the White House and motherhood.

In an interview on Kiki Palmer’s podcast, President Obama talked about helping her and former President Barack Obama’s daughters get into the White House at an early age. Malia Obama was 10 years old and Sasha Obama was 7 when Barack Obama became president, making them two of the youngest people to hold the White House in decades.

“For them, it was just trying to focus on their own lives. They could never take time off from school and what they had to do for school because there was something cool going on in the White House,” President Obama said on “Baby, It’s Kiki Palmer” on Tuesday, May 19. “They only had time off, which meant summer, and then spring break when they weren’t at camp. So the goal was to make their lives as normal as possible.”

To maintain some normalcy, President Obama said he encouraged his daughters to do typical things with friends, such as sleepovers and bar mitzvahs. They added that it took them some time to get used to inviting friends to the White House.

Michelle Obama remembers why she told her White House team to ‘never do that’

One of the things President Obama learned early on was that administrative reforms were needed to help girls serve as “little diplomats” — recalling their first trip to Russia as a family.

“They may have slept for three hours on the plane because of jet lag, and I had to get on the plane and wake them up, knowing they weren’t sleeping,” Obama said. “I thought, this is crazy. I said to[Barack]’This is ridiculous.’

After stepping off the plane, greeting the Russian people, and boarding a limousine to head to the Kremlin, the girls were left feeling overwhelmed. That’s when “Mama Bear” came out, President Obama said.

“Maria says, ‘I’ve never felt so bad in my life.’ And I said, ‘Honey, it’s jet lag,'” she said. “After that trip, we said to the team, ‘Don’t ever do that. Don’t plan a trip where your kids have to go to work as soon as you land.'” So from then on, if they weren’t sleeping, we’d get in another car and go to a hotel. ”

President Obama said he had to take into account that his staff at the time was young and didn’t have children himself, leading to “long and awkward conversations” about scheduling children and adults. That included preparing the Secret Service to handle the Saturday night schedule when the girls were older.

“It’s a little chaotic with a teenage schedule, but you let your kids ride in your own car, so you have to adjust to their lives now,” she says. “They have to be courteous, but they can’t hold back just because someone has to change shifts.”

She further added, “I don’t need every second of freedom. I can work with a clear schedule. My children are not going to be forced to do that during their developmental years. They need to learn to live life.”

She said she became an advocate for children after years of “practice” and finding her voice.

“You have to teach people what your rules are,” she added. “It takes a minute, and we did it at a high level.”

President Trump gives impromptu tour of White House ballroom construction site

0

play

President Donald Trump gave an impromptu tour of the $400 million ballroom project at the White House on May 19, speaking with a massive excavation site in the background and construction noises in the background. The move comes days after Senate officials blocked Republican efforts to fast-track a proposed $1 billion budget item for the Secret Service to strengthen security related to the project.

It was the ultimate backdrop for a president who considers himself a construction chief. The only thing missing was a helmet.

Throughout his presentation, the president held up various renderings of the ballroom while revealing new details about the 90,000-square-foot project, which includes a military complex that includes a research center and military hospital.

“They’re building a military hospital. They’re building all kinds of research facilities. They’re also building conference rooms with banquet halls and rooms that are linked to the military,” he said. “And the ballroom is actually a shield, protecting everything that’s being built here.”

He talked about two facades. One is inspired by ancient Greece and the other is inspired by Rome. He said the structure could also withstand drones and missiles.

President Trump has said the ballroom is funded by himself and donors, including U.S. companies, but his administration supports a Senate Republican bill that calls for $1 billion in taxpayer dollars to improve security. The cost of the ballroom itself has doubled since it was announced last July, from $200 million to $400 million.

Sen. Elizabeth McDonough announced on May 16 that increased security at banquet halls added to the Republican immigration enforcement bill would require a 60-vote threshold to pass, rather than a simple majority.

The bill states that the funds will be used for “security adjustments and upgrades, including on the White House grounds, in support of enhancements by the U.S. Secret Service related to the East Wing Modernization Project, including above-ground and below-ground security features.”

The project is the subject of various court actions, including a federal judge’s injunction blocking construction until it receives “express approval from Congress.” The decision was stayed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and oral argument in the case was set for June 5.

“This is a gift. The taxpayers are not paying for it. The fact that we have a judge who thinks this is a terrible thing means we are making a gift,” Trump said. “He said it was a terrible thing for us to give gifts. The cost should be paid for by the taxpayers. That’s something I’ve never heard before.”

The Trump administration argued that construction of the entire banquet hall must proceed, otherwise the presidential palace would “remain open” and pose “significant national security harm” to the building, the president, his family, and staff.

Trump also listed “air raid shelters, state-of-the-art hospitals and medical facilities, protected compartments, top-secret military facilities, structures and equipment, protective missile-resistant steel, columns, roofs, beams, drone-proof ceilings and roofs, military-grade vents, ballistic, ballistic, and blast-proof glass” in an April Truth Social post that he said would be part of the project.

President Trump and WHO Director-General are ‘concerned’ about Ebola outbreak

0

play

President Donald Trump says he is “concerned” about the deadly Ebola outbreak overseas, where one American has so far tested positive for the disease, for which there is no vaccine or treatment.

Speaking to reporters at a White House event promoting Trump Rx on Monday, May 19, the president answered questions about the rapidly increasing number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. The outbreak was first confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 5 and is thought to have infected hundreds of people.

Asked if Americans should be concerned, Trump said: “I’m concerned about everything, but I certainly am.” “You know, I think it’s limited to Africa right now. But it’s something that’s exploding.”

Dr. Heidi Overton, deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, said Monday that there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in the United States. An American missionary who tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus, the prevalent strain of Ebola, will be evacuated to Germany for treatment, along with six other Americans who are also considered “high risk,” he said.

U.S. authorities also implemented travel and entry restrictions on noncitizens who recently visited Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan.

WHO director-general is ‘deeply concerned’ about the ‘scale and speed’ of Ebola outbreak

Dr. Anthea Anthea, WHO representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, similarly called the situation “very worrying” in a statement on Tuesday, May 19.

“While there is no approved vaccine or treatment for this type of Ebola, supportive care is lifesaving,” she said. “This is occurring in a highly complex epidemiological, operational and humanitarian context, characterized by insecurity, population movement, and both densely populated and remote areas.”

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus similarly told attendees of the 79th World Health Assembly on May 19 that he was “deeply concerned by the scale and speed of the outbreak.”

Still, although the WHO has designated the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern” (a term used to describe “serious, sudden, unusual, or unexpected” health events that pose an international risk), it said on Sunday, May 17, that it still does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency.

How many people are infected with Ebola?

As of May 19, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported more than 500 suspected cases, including 130 suspected deaths. According to the WHO, more than 30 of these cases have been confirmed, and the actual number is likely to be much higher.

Officials say the risk in the United States remains low.

The outbreak comes as critics grow concerned about the Trump administration’s withdrawal from broader public health efforts and the WHO, which once played a key role in monitoring new outbreaks.

Former ‘Bachelor’ Colton Underwood talks fatherhood and faith

0

play

Colton Underwood knew from an early age that he wanted to be a father.

In his new audio-only memoir, Dear Bishop: A Letter To My Son (now available from Hachette Audio), he recalls his second-grade teacher asking his class to write on a piece of paper what they wanted to be when they grew up. When his teacher advised him to drop “NFL player” and write something more realistic, he wrote “stay-at-home dad.”

Now, at age 34, both of his childhood dreams have become reality.

Underwood, a former NFL player who appeared on The Bachelor before coming out as gay in 2021, married Jordan C. Brown in 2023, and the two became parents to son Bishop in 2024. As he approaches his second Father’s Day, Underwood spoke to USA TODAY about his new memoir and what fatherhood has taught him so far.

“Nothing can prepare you for this,” Underwood said. “What I learned is that I have a new baby every two weeks. Our kids are growing, and most babies grow at this rate, and I’m like, ‘Wow! Can I do this already? OK.'”

He said being a father is “the purest love and joy and pure happiness I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Colton Underwood never thought he’d become a father. Now he wants to have two more children.

In his new memoir, Underwood reveals that his stint on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette was a “misguided attempt at self-transformation therapy.” He talks about lying to friends and family about his love life, sneaking out to meet men in college, and how he tried to take his own life because of the shame and guilt he felt at the time.

He said he would make a deal with God, begging to be straight. He never thought he could be a father while being gay, he told USA TODAY.

“I didn’t know that was possible,” he said. After he started coming out to his friends and family, he said, “Even though I came out, I didn’t actually give up on my dream of becoming a father. I think that was the most difficult negotiation I had to make with myself.”

He said there had been references to same-sex couples being parents, citing actor Neil Patrick Harris, who has twins with husband David Burtka, as an example. But at the time, Underwood said, she “didn’t really know or look for” such role models.

He remembers his first date with Brown, when he shared his passion for becoming a father. That’s when everything fell into place, and Underwood recalls thinking, “I really can do this.”

But even after he came out and started dating Brown, Underwood said the road to fatherhood wasn’t easy. He and Brown opened up about their infertility struggles while trying to become fathers, and started the podcast Daddyhood to help other hopeful parents feel less alone.

After making lifestyle and medication changes and relying on an egg donor and surrogate, Underwood and Brown became fathers in 2024.

“It takes a lot of thought and intention for same-sex couples to have children,” Underwood said, adding that they also face financial barriers to expanding their families. “We definitely want one more (baby), if not two more.”

While his faith remains important to him, Underwood says his relationship with religion has changed since coming out and becoming a father.

“My view of faith may not be what it used to be,” he says. “I really feel like the more I get out there, the better my relationship with God is. It’s not conditional anymore.”

What’s next for Colton Underwood?

Underwood said her social media posts are often a breeding ground for hateful comments from people who “don’t agree with same-sex couples having families.”

“I’m in a period where I really try to do my best to protect my peace,” Underwood says. He hopes to continue sharing his story and continuing to be a role model for the LGBTQ+ community. “But it’s going to be tough.”

What is his approach to negativity? Patience and kindness. “I want to be a bridge,” he says. He hopes that by sharing his experiences as a gay man and father with others, more people will accept him.

“Our son has two loving parents,” he says. “And both of his parents are doing everything they can to take care of him, raise him, and give him a great life.”

But with the truly aggressive haters, “we just ignore them and let them go,” Underwood said.

These days, she says she’s more comfortable living outside the spotlight. He and Brown recently co-founded the child skincare brand Toddle.

“I’ve been doing a lot more producing, and I’ve been doing a lot more directing and creative direction these days, and I feel a lot more fulfilled in that,” he said. “It’s really exciting to be able to tap into my creative side without feeling like I have to give my all to the world.”

Amy Schumer reveals intimate side effects of ‘colonoscopy gone wrong’

Amy Schumer is opening up about her feelings after a routine medical procedure apparently went awry.

The 44-year-old “Trainwreck” star spoke with “Not Thin But Not Fat” host Amanda Hirsch about feeling “happier than ever” during a surprise appearance at a Dear Media event on May 17, according to Us Weekly and E. news. But Schumer acknowledged that she has also experienced some struggles.

“Actually, I feel like I just had a botched colonoscopy, so I’m not really in the mood for sex,” she reportedly told Hirsch.

Schumer filed for divorce from her husband of seven years, Chris Fischer, in January, but reportedly declined to provide further details.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, doctors “recommend screening for colorectal cancer starting at age 45 unless you have health problems or risk factors that increase your chances of developing colorectal cancer.”

Schumer’s comedy often relies on a sense of “deliberate over-information,” but she has never shied away from sharing her health struggles with fans. In January 2025, the comedian revealed that he had been diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome.

In an interview with “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper, Schumer said internet trolls helped her realize there might be something wrong with her health. Haters online commented on the swelling on her face, a clear sign of a hormonal disorder.

Cushing’s syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when there is too much cortisol in the body, Dr. Divya Yogi Molen, medical director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Pituitary Center, previously told USA TODAY. Cortisol, known as the “stress hormone,” influences how the body deals with stress and plays an important role in maintaining physical health.

In September 2021, more than two years after giving birth to Schumer and ex-husband Chris Fischer’s son Gene, Schumer underwent surgery to address symptoms of endometriosis. She shared on Instagram that both her uterus and appendix were removed during the surgery due to the aggressive nature of the case.

Garrick Higo changes caddy after receiving hefty PGA penalty

0

play

Days after receiving an embarrassing penalty for being late for a tee time in the opening round of the PGA Championship, Garrick Higgo parted ways with his caddy. Golfweek reported on Monday that Nick Cavendish-Pell will replace Austin Gogart.

On Thursday, as Higo meandered toward the teeing ground, Gaugert was seen on video urging him to hurry. The South African golfer started at 7.18am with Michael Brennan and Sean Michael at Aronimink Golf Club. He arrived at 7:19, but was immediately handed a two-stroke penalty and then missed by one stroke.

Considering Higgo’s comments after the round, the decision to change caddies isn’t all that shocking.

“My caddy dropped my Trackman in the locker, so I headed to the putting green thinking I still had five minutes,” Higgo said. “After I made one putt, I heard my name called. My caddy yelled at me and I ran down and got a two-stroke penalty.”

Afterwards, Higgo was seen on ESPN having a lively discussion with officials in the scoring tent.

The 29-year-old is believed to be the first player to receive a late penalty at the PGA Championship since David Lipsky in 2019. One more minute and he would have been completely disqualified.

The change is effective immediately, Higo’s agent confirmed to Golfweek, with Cavendish Pell joining Higo in his bag for this week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Dallas.

It’s a reunion. Cavendish-Pell was filling in for Higo when he won his first PGA Tour victory at the 2021 Palmetto Championship. The two worked together throughout the 2022 season before going their separate ways.

Higgo took part of the blame for his tardiness.

“If you know me, you know that I’m a very casual and laid-back person,” Higgo said. “I don’t want to be there ten minutes early. I know five minutes is fine. I thought I had time. That was clearly too casual.”

‘Operation Epic Furious’ Arcade Game Coming Near Mar-a-Lago in Florida

  • Operation Epic Furious: Strait to Hell is a satirical arcade game about the Iran War by The Secret Handshake.
  • This arcade cabinet was originally installed in DC and is currently located in Lake Worth Beach, Florida, about 8 miles from Mar-a-Lago.

The group behind statues of President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein in the “Titanic” pose is bringing its latest project to Florida.

“Operation Epic Furious: Straits to Hell” is an installation originally installed at the DC War Memorial by the anonymous arts protest group The Secret Handshake. The group said in an email that three functional video game cabinets in Washington, D.C., depicted cynical battles against DEI and the Pope, satirizing the Trump administration’s push for war with Iran.

As of May 18th, one of the games is located near President Trump’s Winter White House in Florida. “Operation Epic Furious” will be on display for five days at MTN SPACE in Lake Worth Beach, about eight miles from Mar-a-Lago. This is the first time the group has brought a project to Florida, but Trump’s club typically closes after Mother’s Day, when the social season ends.

“The Trump administration knows the best way to sell combat is to make it into a video game, which is why they’ve been pumping out a hype reel of the ‘worst’ video game about the Iran war,” a plaque at the facility reads, according to The Secret Handshake. “Brace yourselves and play hard, because this game may never end.”

Operation Epic Furious comes with an online video game

The Trump administration has been working to communicate about the war through memes on social media, some of which include video game clips.

The online version of the video game “Operation Epic Furious” quotes Trump’s Truth Social post in which he said, “Perhaps the entire civilization will perish tonight and never rise again.” He posted the post on April 7 as part of a long-term threat to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the same night the United States and Iran reached a cease-fire agreement.

The online video game begins by allowing users to guide President Trump through a pixelated White House and interact with other officials in the administration, prompting choices such as ordering a Diet Coke or burning the Epstein files. However, if the user chooses to ask to hold First Lady Melania Trump’s hand, it’s game over. The White House did not respond to USA TODAY’s earlier request for comment about the video game and the installation.

According to Secret Handshake, more than 250,000 people have played the game online.

What else did the secret handshake lead to?

Secret Handshake previously told USA TODAY that it is a small group of citizens that uses art and humor to encourage political discussion.

Their other projects include a statue depicting Trump and Epstein in a “Titanic” pose and holding hands, poking fun at Friendship Month. An eight-foot-tall sculpture of a hand crushing the Statue of Liberty’s crown while making a thumbs-up gesture, dubbed the “Dictator Approved” piece. and a “golden television statue” showing footage of Trump dancing with Epstein.

El Niño is coming. Prepare your home for extreme weather

0

The National Weather Service recently announced that there is an 82% chance that El Niño will begin in the summer of 2026. This natural weather pattern warms parts of the Pacific Ocean, which affects the climate in many parts of the United States.

Many communities, especially coastal areas, may experience heavier rain, storm surge, and storm surge, and coastal homeowners may need emergency preparedness plans for the coming months.

Here’s what homeowners need to know to prepare for the extreme weather expected in 2026.

Why does El Niño cause more storms and floods?

El Niño events can cause sea levels to temporarily rise, creating storm surges that can push farther inland and flood homes. Additionally, some areas of the U.S. could see more rain, which could lead to water backflows and clogged storm drains.

How to prepare your home for extreme storms this summer

To properly prepare for extreme weather events, here are some home maintenance tasks you may want to complete in advance. You can also create a power outage preparedness checklist to ensure you are prepared.

  • Clean gutters and downspouts.
  • Test the sump pump
  • Install a water alarm at home
  • cut off dead tree branches
  • Take photos and create an inventory of your belongings
  • Pack your belongings into an emergency bag

Regina Neenan, CFP®, ABFP®, director and partner of cash flow and insurance planning at FPFoCo, a personal financial advisory firm, also recommends that homeowners have emergency cash on hand “enough to cover routine home emergencies, such as a broken water heater or plumbing or electrical issues.”

They explain that being able to cover minor repairs yourself can help prevent insurance claims and premium increases. In the event of major repairs or extensive damage, an emergency fund can help cover your deductible.

How to make an emergency kit for multi-day power outages

According to Ready.gov, which educates the public about disaster preparedness, homeowners can prepare for power outages in several different ways. The first step is to take stock of emergency supplies such as flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers. Stock up on non-perishable foods and be sure to have a manual can opener.

If you are taking any medication that requires refrigeration, ask your healthcare provider about storage options.

Generator safety tips during power outages that homeowners should know

Generators can help power small appliances during power outages, but it’s important to use them safely. Ready.gov experts recommend using your generator outdoors, at least 20 feet away from your home, to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

How to secure outdoor furniture from storms and strong winds

If high winds are expected, bring small items indoors, such as furniture, grills, and toys. Flying objects such as patio umbrellas and planters can cause serious damage and break glass if left outside. If you have large items like trampolines or pergolas, secure them with heavy-duty lawn anchors.

What homeowners need to know about flood risk and insurance coverage

Larry Kissel, vice president of personal insurance real estate at Travelers Insurance, explains that while homeowners insurance covers some storm damage, “it typically doesn’t cover flooding.” Therefore, if you live in a flood-prone area, consider purchasing separate insurance just for flood damage. The National Flood Insurance Program sells insurance to homeowners seeking home insurance coverage for flood risk.

Will my homeowners insurance cover hurricane damage?

“Most homeowners insurance policies cover wind damage, which is one of the most common causes of property damage from storms,” says Kissel. Additionally, we explained that most homeowners insurance policies will cover repair costs after tornadoes, hurricanes, and other types of storms.

However, Kissel said coverage may vary depending on the policy. Therefore, homeowners should check the details of their individual policies to understand what is covered.

FAQ

Will El Niño cause more power outages?

El Niño can cause heavy rain, storms, flooding, and strong winds, and can also cause power outages in affected areas.

What types of storms cause the most damage to homes?

According to the National Center for Environmental Information, 403 severe weather and weather events between 1980 and 2025 caused nearly $3 trillion in damages. Storm types that caused more than $1 billion in damages in 2024 included five tropical cyclones, one wildfire, two winter storms, and 17 severe storms.

Does homeowners insurance cover flood damage?

While standard home insurance can cover storm damage, it rarely covers flood damage. Homeowners in flood-prone areas can purchase separate flood insurance. For many homeowners in coastal areas, homeowners insurance is worth the cost to repair your home after an extreme weather event.

What is not covered during severe weather?

Homeowners insurance typically does not cover floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, or sewer backups. Check your policy carefully to see what is covered and what is excluded. If you have a home warranty policy, be sure to check the home warranty exclusions as well.

Hayden Panettiere opens up about years of addiction and abuse

0

In a reckoning with the status of child stars in Hollywood, Hayden Panettiere is the latest to share the dark side of a high-profile career.

The 36-year-old “Nashville” and “Ice Princess” star has been acting since she was eight months old. In his new memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning (now available from Grand Central Publishing), Panettiere chronicles his childhood fame, interspersed with his badass teenage acting and adult addiction. In a recent interview about the memoir, Panettiere recalled that he was “prepared” to be a “little soldier” throughout his early career, which included roles on the soap opera “One Life to Live” and the animated series “A Bug’s Life.”

Much of Panettiere’s memoir deals with grief, particularly the death of his brother and the years he lost to drug addiction. She writes about relinquishing custody of her then-2-year-old daughter after struggling with postpartum depression and addiction. And, like many of her famous colleagues, Panettiere mourns the loss of “the opportunity to have a ‘normal’ childhood.”

Hayden Panettiere says she was treated ‘like a call girl’ as a teenager in Hollywood

When Panettiere was just 4 years old, her mother drove her from audition to audition through the crowded streets of Manhattan, ending each call with the phrase, “Do not call.” Panettile, who was praised for her tears and dramatic expressions, said, “I started to associate breakups with worship.”

“As an actor, when I failed, got sick, screamed, cried, got killed, grieved, and suffered, adults showed positive interest in me. Reality merged with my imagination, and all of my shame and trauma became embedded in my living core memory,” Panettiere writes. “I often wonder if, unintentionally, we think trauma is good for us.”

One of these traumas occurred at a party when she was 19 years old. The Oscar-winning actor and director (whom Panettiere did not name) revealed himself to her. Later, a trusted friend, whom Panettiere refers to only by the pseudonym “Stella McAmis,” forced her into bed with a “famous 30-something British singer-songwriter.” Panettile was shocked and ran out of the room.

“She went from confiding in me, spoiling me, and treating me like a best friend to treating me like a call girl,” Panettiere wrote.

‘Nashville’ character’s addiction was ‘like looking into a funhouse mirror’

When she was a teenager, Panettile believes her team gave her “happiness pills” (amphetamines) before interviews and red carpets to help her focus. Panettiere reflected on her addiction and recovery in “This is Me,” writing that the habit would “change” her world forever.

“At 16, they were my gateway drug to the goodness of medicine and the fall of addiction,” she writes.

Panettiere wrote that after giving birth to her daughter Kaya, she suffered from postpartum depression and became dependent on alcohol and the central nervous system depressant Klonopin. At one point, she writes, a doctor told her that if she didn’t stop drinking, she would be “dead within five years.”

She didn’t have any close friends on the set of “Nashville,” and no one talked about her addiction, which she says contributed to an “enabling” environment. Instead, “Nashville” screenwriters reflected on her character’s Season 4 arc following Panettiere’s death.

“Juliet Barnes had postpartum depression, problems with alcohol and pills, and was on the verge of divorce. She was a volatile, absentee mother who fought with everyone, including her fans. Every time I read the script that day, it was like looking into a funhouse mirror and seeing a distorted version of myself. I can’t tell you how much this made me feel lost,” Panettiere wrote.

During this time, Ms. Panettiere said, the first thing she thought about when she woke up was alcohol, “not my kids, not my job, not the rest of my life. I needed a drink to do my job.” Her ex-partner, former Ukrainian professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko, then sought full custody of their daughter. He was worried that she was in Panettile’s care.

Panettiere wrote that she agreed to relinquish her parental rights because the legal battle “would be emotionally devastating to me at a time when my heart and soul were weaker than ever.”

Her drug abuse was not the only thing the Panettiere family experienced. Panettiere wrote that her brother, Jansen, smoked crack and heroin until his death in 2023 at age 28. At the time, his family said the cause of death was “cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) and complications with the aortic valve.”

Hayden Panettiere on abusive ex-girlfriend: ‘I didn’t want to call myself a victim’

Panettiere’s brother introduced her to ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson, who was arrested multiple times on assault charges during their on-and-off relationship. Panettiere wrote about the alleged abuse, saying that at one point her “face was so swollen that I couldn’t leave the house for weeks.” In another instance, she said he yelled, “Run as far as you can in five seconds because we need to start as soon as possible before he throws the remote at me.” On another occasion, he banged her head against a wall.

Panettiere wrote that she was afraid to call 911 because “the public would find out” about the alleged abuse. Instead, she took shelter in her car, where she kept a book and a bottle of water until Hickerson calmed down.

“I have been wondering how to communicate this because I don’t want to be a spokesperson for domestic violence,” Panettiere wrote. “I didn’t want to call myself a victim, but here I am.”

In an interview with TMZ about the memoir, Hickerson acknowledged the abuse and said, “I’ve had several opportunities to apologize and reflect on it.” He also said he recently spoke with Panettiere about the memoir and that he supports it.

“Well, I think that speaks for itself,” Hickerson told TMZ. “I was arrested for abusing her, but I don’t blame her friends for being mad at me.”
