President Obama doubts Trump’s Iran deal is better than his own deal

0

play

Former President Barack Obama has cast doubt on President Donald Trump’s new Iran deal, saying it is unlikely to be much different from the deal Trump abandoned.

Just as President Trump announced a framework aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s vital shipping lane, President Obama said in an interview with ABC News that it was “doubtful” that any deal would be a significant improvement on the 2015 nuclear deal.

President Trump announced on Sunday, June 14, that the United States and Iran have reached a framework agreement to halt fighting and restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but key details remain unresolved, including how the two countries will deal with Iran’s nuclear program.

“I doubt that any future agreement will be very different or much improved from the original agreement,” Obama told reporters, noting that the agreement “worked for a long time” before the U.S. withdrew.

President Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018, calling the deal a “horrible” unilateral deal that would not bring “calm” or peace.

President Obama’s full interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts will be aired on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, June 17th.

What is JCPOA?

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, agreed in 2015 between Iran and world powers including the United States, was aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Under the deal, Iran agreed to limit uranium enrichment, reduce its nuclear stockpile and allow expanded international inspections of its facilities. In return, the United States and other countries lifted trade and economic sanctions targeting Iran’s oil exports and economy generally.

Tropical Storm Arthur could form in the Gulf soon

0

play

Could Tropical Storm Arthur be forming in the Gulf Coast? On June 15, National Hurricane Center forecasters raised the chance of the storm forming within the next few days to 50%.

A tropical disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico (renamed by the federal government as the Gulf of America) will increase the risk of heavy rain and numerous flash floods across Mexico’s Gulf Coast and South this week, said Michael Rowley, a hurricane expert with WPLG-TV in Miami.

Flood watches are in effect for more than 20 million residents in Texas and Louisiana due to the threat of flooding from this disruption, combined with other weather systems, according to the National Weather Service. This includes the Austin, Houston, and San Antonio metropolitan areas.

Houston-based meteorologist Matt Lanza said on his blog, The Eyewall, that the area between Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lake Charles, Louisiana, and southwestern Mississippi will see the heaviest rain, with isolated spots potentially receiving up to 15 inches or more.

“This is the most significant rainfall setting in this region since 2024,” Lanza said. As the Weather Prediction Center points out, “Storms that develop in this environment will have an almost unnatural ability to produce heavy rainfall.”

The hurricane center also warned: “Regardless of tropical storm development, officials in southern and eastern Texas and parts of Louisiana and Mississippi should prepare for torrential rain over the next few days that could cause widespread, life-threatening flash flooding, urban and river flooding. High winds and coastal flooding are also possible in parts of the northwest Gulf Coast.”

Development takes several days

Developing tropical system remains over Mexico: The National Hurricane Center said in its forecast Monday morning that a trough of low pressure over northeastern Mexico continues to produce chaotic showers and thunderstorm activity.

“No development is expected over the next day or so as the trough remains inland and flows generally northward across northeastern Mexico and southern Texas,” the hurricane center said.

“The system could then track northeast and reemerge in the northwestern U.S. Gulf late Tuesday or Wednesday, where environmental conditions could support some development around midweek,” the hurricane center said.

Hello, Arthur?

In a named system, it would be named Tropical Storm Arthur.

Tropical storm watches and warnings may be required for parts of the Gulf Coast beginning June 16, the Hurricane Center said.

Heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds are possible across eastern and southern Texas and parts of Louisiana this week, regardless of whether a tropical storm forms, according to the hurricane center.

Regarding tropical development, Lanza said, “Tropical development is unlikely to extend beyond cyclone or low-grade tropical cyclone status. This should be considered primarily as severe storms and flash flooding events along the Gulf Coast.”

The chaos came from Tropical Storm Christina

A series of weather disturbances over Mexico can be traced in part to moisture associated with Christina, which reached tropical storm strength in the eastern Pacific Ocean south of Central America, AccuWeather said.

Cristina dumped rain across Central America late last week before disappearing.

Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather’s chief hurricane expert, said in an online forecast that the system could return to the skies over the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas, or a second system could try to form over the Gulf Coast along the front that stalled earlier in the week.

DaSilva said any organized storms along or near the front could lead to further increases in rainfall, but for most of the South, rain forecasts and flash flooding concerns remain the same regardless of tropical development.

‘NeeDoh’ toy burns teenager in hot car

0

play

A New Mexico teen was rushed to an emergency center with severe burns after a NeeDoh toy that had been sitting in a hot car for hours reportedly exploded when she squeezed it.

The article follows a series of headlines about children trying to heat NeeDoh and other fuzzy toys (often soft, gel-filled stress and fidget products) in the microwave, only to end up suffering third-degree burns from the melted material inside.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest incident.

“Mommy, please take your clothes off.”

Katie Spence told local media outlet KRQE that she and her 13-year-old daughter were in West Texas on June 6, when temperatures reached 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

Throughout the day, Spence’s daughter, Needow, sat in the car as the gel material inside the car grew hotter and hotter. More than four hours later, the girl grabbed the toy and it exploded, causing third-degree burns on her arms and legs.

“She jumped out of the car and seemed like she was screaming at the top of her lungs, ‘Mommy, please let me down,'” Katie Spence told KRQE. “There were people around. When we tried to take it off, they told us not to take it off because it would peel off her skin. So I rushed her to a nearby children’s hospital.”

The entire ordeal was recorded on a Snapchat video, the outlet said, and begins with Spence’s daughter commenting on how hot the toy was before it exploded.

NeeDoh’s parent company responds

In a statement shared with USA TODAY, Schilling, NeeDoh’s parent company, said it was “saddened to hear of the reported incident and wishes the child a speedy recovery,” adding that “the safety of the child and family is the top priority” for the company.

Following a social media trend encouraging children to microwave NeeDoh toys, Schilling has added several safety warnings to all packaging. It contains warnings about leaving the toy in a hot car or in direct sunlight, as well as the dangers of microwaving, heating, and freezing.

Previously reported incidents

Spence’s experience wasn’t the first time a fluffy toy had exploded inside a car.

Back in May, a mother warned others on a local Facebook group that her daughter’s friend’s fluffy dumpling-shaped toy had exploded after being left in a car.

“My younger daughter picked it up in the car today. It exploded from the heat in the car and splattered all over her body,” the mother wrote. “She’s okay, thank goodness. But the screams that came out of her are something I’ll never forget.”

Meanwhile, in August 2025, another mother posted on TikTok the aftermath of a fluffy toy exploding in her car.

Trump-Iran deal vs. Obama-Iran deal. Are they different, as Trump has vowed?

0

play

  • President Trump said he had reached an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
  • President Trump criticized the 2015 deal to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities and withdrew from the deal in 2018.
  • Although the text of the memorandum has not yet been made public, the future of Iran’s nuclear program remains undecided.

President Donald Trump has vowed that any deal with Iran will be different from the 2015 deal signed by former President Barack Obama.

Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, during his first term as president. On February 28, the United States and Israel bombed Iran, starting a war that killed thousands and nearly closed the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route.

On June 14, President Trump said the two countries had reached a deal, after repeatedly teasing that the United States and Iran would reach a deal soon. President Trump is attending the G7 summit in France this week, where the deal will be a major focus of discussion.

Will President Trump’s deal be different from President Obama’s deal, which he promised? The text of the agreement has not yet been made public, but here’s what we know so far:

President Obama casts doubt on potential deal

Before President Trump announced the latest deal, President Obama spoke to “Good Morning America” about his thoughts on Trump’s response to Iran.

According to ABC News, President Obama said in an interview on June 13, “I doubt that any deal that comes out will be much different or much better than the deal that we originally entered into and that we, the United States, worked for for a long time before we left.”

“I hope that the bombing will stop and that ordinary people will no longer suffer as a result of war,” he said, calling for diplomacy over military action.

What was included in President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal?

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was an agreement between the United States, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Iran. Iran agreed to give up the means to build nuclear weapons. In return, the United States and its allies lifted economic sanctions against the country.

Iran has vowed not to develop nuclear weapons and agreed to have its plans monitored by international watchdogs.

Read the full text of the agreement here: Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

What does the Iran deal announced by President Trump include?

The full text of President Trump’s agreement has not yet been made public. President Trump said on June 15 that the agreement had been signed by France and that the document would be released after Friday. U.S. and Iranian officials are scheduled to meet in Switzerland on Friday to formally sign the deal.

President Trump announced that he would at least reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports.

A senior US official told reporters that the memorandum includes the possibility of lifting sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian funds.

The agreement paves the way for further negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, a thorny unresolved issue.

The 75-year-old “Total Eclipse of the Heart” songstress is “no longer in a coma, but remains unwell and is in intensive care at a hospital in Portugal,” her publicist said in a website update on June 15.

“Her condition is improving, but the process is slow,” the statement continued. “Doctors are confident she will recover well, but it will take time.”

On May 8, Tyler’s team told fans that she had been “placed in an induced coma by doctors to aid her recovery” after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery.

Bonnie Tyler’s 2026 Summer Concerts Canceled, Postponed

The “Holding Out for a Hero” singer was originally scheduled to perform a series of international shows through December. However, her team confirmed in an update on June 15 that previously scheduled concerts have been canceled or postponed until next year, and she will not be able to take the stage for the next few months.

“This affects all current shows until the end of August. At this time, we are still hopeful that fall shows will take place,” her team wrote. “We apologize to Bonnie’s fans and promoter partners for any disappointment this may cause, and we hope that they will understand and cooperate with us in this difficult situation. We look forward to seeing you next year in their place.”

“We are aware of your kindness and are very grateful,” Tyler added in the statement.

Before her recent health problems, Tyler told British magazine Hello! In an interview posted on March 2, she said she is “well enough at the moment” and “really enjoying the show.”

Air Force B-52 bomber crash in California, 8 killed

0

play

On Monday, June 15, a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress “crashed and burst into flames” shortly after takeoff in California, killing eight people, military officials said.

The giant military plane crashed at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California at around 11:20 a.m. local time. Base officials said the people on board were a mix of military personnel and civilian contractors.

“We lost eight great Americans. This crash is considered non-survivable,” base deputy commander Col. James Hayes told reporters in Edwards on Monday afternoon. It added that the plane “crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff.”

The immediate cause of the crash was unknown. Hayes estimated the investigation would take six months. He said the flight was a test mission in support of a radar modernization program. The commander said the names of the dead will not be released until their families are notified.

Base officials added that more information would be released as the investigation progresses. Officials said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the members at this time.”

In a post updated just before 1 p.m. PT, the base announced that the airfield would be closed and all incoming aircraft would be diverted.

“All non-commercial visitor passes are suspended until further notice to allow the facility to focus on emergency response operations,” the base said in a statement.

The Pentagon confirmed the crash to USA TODAY without elaborating on what led to the accident.

Deadly B-52 Stratofortress crash occurs on U.S. soil, first in decades

According to the Aircraft Accident Records Bureau, the last fatal crash involving a B-52 Stratofortress in the United States occurred on June 24, 1994, when the aircraft stalled during a dangerous low-altitude maneuver during a practice flight ahead of an air show at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.

Investigators later determined that the pilot, Lt. Col. Arthur “Bud” Holland, had made steep bank angles and low-altitude flights in violation of numerous regulations during previous practice flights, and attempted a series of banked turns and other maneuvers against orders. He and all three crew members were killed.

According to the archives, the investigation cited several factors that contributed to the tragedy, including disregard for procedures on the part of the Dutch, failure to take precautions by senior management, and unpreparedness of the crew of the doomed plane.

In 2015, footage of the accident was used in the trailer for the Michael Bay film Project Almanac. Paramount Pictures later removed the shot and apologized to director Bay after an outcry from the families of the two crash victims.

In 2016, a B-52 crashed and burst into flames during takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. All seven crew members escaped safely.

About Edwards Air Force Base

The base spans parts of Kern, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties and is approximately 160 miles north of Los Angeles.

California leaders mourn

California Governor Gavin Newsom and other state leaders released statements mourning those killed in the crash.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Edwards Air Force Base community affected by this tragic incident,” Newsom said in a statement Monday night. “We would like to thank the first responders and emergency personnel currently on scene.”

“My heart breaks for the families of the military personnel involved in this devastating crash today at Edwards Air Force Base. I join all of California in mourning this tragic loss of life. Our prayers are with their families,” said the state’s incoming senator, U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff.

In a statement about the X, Rep. Vince Fung (R-Calif.) asked the public to pray for the crew and “the entire Edwards community.” His post included a photo of large plumes of black smoke billowing from a field.

What is the B-52 Stratofortress?

According to information from Air Force Global Strike Command, the B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range heavy bomber that can reach subsonic speeds up to 50,000 feet.

An online military fact sheet says it is “capable of carrying nuclear or precision-guided conventional weapons with global precision navigation capabilities.”

The last crash at the base occurred on May 18, 1992, when a twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2 Marquis crashed during landing, killing both crew members, according to military archives reviewed by USA TODAY. Seven passengers were also seriously injured.

The plane was completing contact with the U.S. Navy from China Lake, an unincorporated community in Kern County, when it crashed into the ground on final approach.

Edwards Air Force Base History

Many of humanity’s historic achievements in aviation took place and continue to this day on the dry lake bed of the Mojave Desert, known as Edwards Air Force Base.

Edwards Air Force Base was established in 1942 on what was then known as Moorock Dry Lake and has steadily grown since then to more than 300,000 acres, or 470 square miles, said Mike Paoli, retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and 412th Test Wing spokesman.

The base is home to more than 11,000 residents, approximately 20% military and 80% civilians.

Trump UFC Freedom 250 coins cost thousands of dollars. what we know

0

play

The White House’s Freedom 250 UFC bout may be firmly in the rearview mirror, but fans can still pick up commemorative coins valued at nearly $12,000.

Ahead of the June 14 fight card, the Trump family promoted a series of commemorative coins produced by Real Trump Coins. Real Trump Coins is an independent company with multiple licensing agreements with the original family business of the same name.

Here’s what you need to know about commemorative coins, including their prices.

From $250 to $12,000

According to the Real Trump Coin website, medallions range in price from $249.99 to $11,999.99 and are still available for purchase. All objects feature the president’s profile on one side and the 250th anniversary emblem on the other.

The cheapest option is 1 oz of silver at $249.99. Comes in a protective holder with the UFC Freedom 250 logo on the top. The same design and packaging graces the 5-ounce silverware, priced at $1,324.99.

The one-tenth ounce of gold costs $1,499.99 and features portraits of Trump and UFC president and CEO Dana White on the top of the protective case. The main event, however, is the 1-ounce gold medallion, which retails for $11,999.99 in the same package.

As of June 15, an ounce of gold was trading for an average of $4,000 to $4,500, according to the American Bullion Exchange.

According to the Real Trump Coin website, it will take four to six weeks for UFC coins to be shipped.

Real Trump Coins did not respond to inquiries from USA TODAY about whether the Freedom 250 x UFC coins would be permanently displayed in its shops or how many coins were sold before fight cards.

What is a real Trump coin?

The medallion was created by Real Trump Coins, an independent venture that licenses Trump’s likeness from an organization of the same name run by his two adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.

The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment about the coin.

Real Trump Coins says all of its precious metals are minted in the United States and that Trump personally designed the coins.

Reviews of several other coins available on the company’s website are mostly positive, with buyers calling the products “stunning,” “beautiful,” and “amazing.”

Some people said they didn’t receive the products they ordered and couldn’t get a refund. One person described the engraving on the coin as “mediocre at best”, adding: “The price gouging is grotesque.”

What’s in the name?

Real Trump Coin is not affiliated with the government or the presidential administration, but Trump and his allies have renamed several institutions after the president.

A list previously compiled by USA TODAY includes:

  • american banknotes: Although not his name, President Trump’s signature will be added to all future U.S. banknotes, starting with the $100 bill, the U.S. Treasury announced on March 26, marking the first time in history that a sitting president’s signature will appear on a U.S. bill. Trump’s name will replace the name of the U.S. Treasury secretary, one of two signatures currently appearing on U.S. currency. The other is the signature of the Secretary of the Treasury.
  • commemorative gold coin: This option featuring his image is part of a series of coins the U.S. Mint is producing to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this year.
  • National Park Service: Part of NPS’s 2026 annual “America the Beautiful” pass design includes a portrait of President Trump next to a portrait of George Washington.
  • President Trump’s account: As part of the Republican tax plan passed in July, infants born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 will be given a $1,000 contribution to a savings account that grows with the stock market. The program was once known as “MAGA Accounts,” but was renamed to “Trump Accounts” during the legislative process.
  • Trump Rx: A prescription drug government website aimed at helping Americans buy medicines at lower prices launched in February, with President Trump calling it a “huge deal” that will help people “save a lot of money and get healthy.”

The company did not immediately confirm closing dates for each location.

Why would a company close a store?

West Marine said in court documents that recent efforts to improve its financial position date back to at least 2023.

In March and September of the same year, the company recorded large amounts of debt. Other financial stressors included long-term lease obligations, including 200 leases requiring annual payments of $55 million.

“[These leases]have depleted liquidity and have proven to be an insurmountable obstacle that cannot be adequately addressed without this Chapter 11 filing,” the company wrote.

“In addition to declining consumer discretionary spending, the boating, marine and outdoor recreation sector will continue to struggle generally in 2026,” West Marine said in court documents. “This is primarily due to the significant rise in diesel prices, the inflationary situation and global supply chain difficulties, all of which contributed to the need for a deal in 2023 and has not abated since then.”

Pope Leo’s younger brother Louis Prevost seen at UFC Freedom 250. who is he?

Sunday’s UFC Freedom 250 saw fighters such as Ilya Topria and Justin Gaethje compete at the White House, and many notable figures were seen in the crowd, including President Donald Trump.

The event, held on Sunday, June 14, was attended by First Lady Melania Trump, UFC President and CEO Dana White, and Vice President J.D. Vance, in addition to 4,300 other people seated under a makeshift arena on the South Lawn.

A prominent family member was also in attendance: Pope Leo’s younger brother, Louis Prévost.

Since his brother’s historic election to the Holy See, Mr. Prevost has publicly supported Mr. Trump, with the president calling him “all MAGA” in a post on Truth Social.

“I like his brother Louis so much more than I do because Louis is a total MAGA,” Trump said in an April post. “He gets it, but Leo doesn’t!”

Mr. Prevost did not appear at the White House on Sunday. In May, the pope’s brother was invited to meet with President Trump in the Oval Office, where he was photographed with his wife standing next to the president and Vance, smiling.

story of two brothers

Despite President Trump’s good relationship with his older brother, Prevost, the president has a strained relationship with his younger brother, Leo.

One of the biggest clashes between the two sides came after President Trump threatened to destroy “an entire civilization” if Iran failed to meet an April deadline to open the Strait of Hormuz. In response to President Trump’s post, the Pope said the comments were “unacceptable.”

“As everyone knows, today there is a threat against the entire Iranian people, and this is truly unacceptable,” Leo said.

President Trump went on to call the American-born pope “soft on crime” and posted a photo of himself that appeared to be Jesus Christ.

Who is Louis Prevost?

Mr. Prevost, 74, is Leo’s eldest brother and has been vocal about his political views. The Florida resident described himself as the “black sheep of the family” on a December 2025 episode of “Piers Morgan Uncensored.”

During the episode, he also referred to himself as a “MAGA kind of guy.”

Prevost is four years older than Leo and two years older than his other brother, John Joseph Prevost, but said the brothers had a closer relationship. During the same appearance on Piers Morgan’s show, Prevost added that his long absences while serving in the U.S. Navy led to a lack of closeness with his brothers.

“I missed growing up with them. I think what they remember most is me hitting them all the time,” he said.

“It has trained us to be closer. We talk almost every day. I get to talk to my brother, the Pope, about once a week,” Prevost added.

Josh Hokit’s comments about Michelle Obama in the UFC are nothing new

play

  • UFC fighter Josh Hokit made false and conspiratorial claims about former first lady Michelle Obama at a White House event.
  • For years, the Obamas have faced racist and derogatory attacks from public officials and online memes.

It’s been more than nine years since Michelle Obama left the White House. She still cannot escape the abuse.

The attack on Obama, who made history as the first African-American woman to serve as first lady, took place Sunday at a White House event hosted by President Donald Trump to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.

“And finally, Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?” Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Josh Hokit exclaimed during a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. The podcaster who hosted the in-ring interview did not dispute Hokit’s false claims, which were born out of far-right conspiracy theories and have been repeatedly debunked.

Representatives for the Obamas did not respond to requests for comment on June 15.

UFC President and CEO Dana White responded to Hokit’s remarks. “I understand that the Obamas are public figures, but I completely disagree with saying mean and untrue things about people’s families,” he said in a text message to Time magazine.

White has defended free speech, but added: “I hate that kind of nonsense.” Hokitt similarly targeted WNBA star Brittney Griner in January.

White has never publicly disciplined a fighter for using slurs or derogatory language, so Hokit is unlikely to face any punishment this time.

How Michelle Obama responded to criticism

The Obamas have faced racist rhetoric for years, and Michelle has been subject to constant online abuse.

Attacks have taken place at all levels, from a small city mayor in Washington in 2015 to a West Virginia county official in 2019 to the current occupant of the White House. Earlier this year, President Trump shared an artificial intelligence-generated meme with TruthSocial depicting the Obamas as jungle monkeys. The White House initially defended the post before removing it, with White House officials telling USA TODAY at the time that it had been shared “inadvertently” by a staffer.

Michelle has also continued to comment on her appearance, with a 2011 cartoon depicting her as overweight and munching on a hamburger, and more recently being accused of taking Ozempic to lose weight.

“When they go low, we go high,” President Obama famously said at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, indicating that she was willing to take a dignified approach to everything from insults to conspiracy theories, but that didn’t mean she was immune to sharp attacks.

“The splinters that hurt me the most were the ones that tried to cut me,” she said in 2017, but admitted it was difficult to know that “after eight years of working hard for this country, there are still people who can’t see me for who I am because of the color of my skin.”

In 2022, President Obama said he wanted to braid his hair during his term, but decided not to because the American people were “not ready.” She also admitted that her time as first lady had a huge influence on her fashion and style choices.

Since leaving the White House, Obama says he has found confidence and freedom. (The most memorable came in the form of Balenciaga’s sequined thigh-high boots.)

All first ladies have faced criticism and relentless scrutiny during their terms. There are suspicions that the White House is using a shadow figure of current first lady Melania Trump. Then a viral meme called “Free Melania” appeared, implying that the first lady was in an unhappy marriage.

For most first ladies, the barrage wanes considerably or disappears once their husbands leave the role of commander-in-chief.

Despite the broadside, Obama maintains fairly high approval ratings, with 66% of all voters and 87% of Democrats, according to Marist polls. This is significantly higher than President Trump’s latest approval rating of 39%.

“Wendy’s Minions & Monsters Adult Meal” was released on June 15th (Monday), so I immediately went to the nearest store. After ordering through the AI-powered drive-thru and picking up my meal, the cashier told me I was the first person at that Wendy’s to order the new option.

I arrived promptly at 10:30am (Central time). That’s the time they start serving lunch. Priced at $14.49, the meal came in a bag covered in various Minion and Wendy’s images, including the Wendy’s logo wearing Minion Google.

When I had to choose between the Big Bacon Classic and the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, I chose the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. This meal also comes with fries and the most “Minions” inspired menu item, the Banana Frosty Swirl.

Sweet treats were the star of the show. I don’t really like banana flavored foods, but this was too delicious not to like it. (After a few sips, I said “Banana!” in my best Minion voice.)

This meal also came with one of four Wendy’s exclusive “Minions & Monsters” blind box collections. I’m sorry to report that my collectible was a monster (fourth option). I wanted the minions, but that means I have to go back and collect the other three.

Although I didn’t try these, Wendy’s also announced two new Coca-Cola Freestyle beverages inspired by movie characters: Pineapple Minion Mischief Fizz and Goomy’s Grimy Lime.

Here’s what else you need to know about the diet.

Watch me try out the meal in the video at the top of this story.

Wendy’s “Minions & Monsters” Kids Meal

Fun isn’t just for adults. The adult menu has just appeared, but from June 8th, “Wendy’s Minions & Monsters Kids Meal” has appeared on the menu.

  • Choose from 2-piece chicken tenders, 4-piece chicken nuggets, hamburger or cheeseburger
  • Junior Hot & Crispy Fries or Apple Bites
  • kids drinks
  • One of six exclusive Wendy’s Minions & Monsters children’s meal toys – James, Henry, Ed, Richard, Goomi and Dort.

When will the movie “Minions & Monsters” be released?

“Minions & Monsters” will be released on Wednesday, July 1st.

Supreme Court upholds ruling on anti-abortion leaflets in schools

0

play

  • Both lower courts sided with the school. The school cited its content-neutral policy for wall postings as the reason for rejecting her flyer.
  • The case could shed light on conflicting case law that obscures what protects the speech of K-12 students.

The Supreme Court declined to hear a lawsuit over an anti-abortion club’s flyer display at an Indiana high school, upholding a lower court’s ruling that the school had the right to ban anti-abortion flyers.

The national conservative litigation group the Alliance Defending Freedom alleged that Noblesville High School, just north of Indianapolis, violated the rights of students by not allowing club fliers to be posted in hallways. The school labeled her poster as too political, pointing to a policy that requires wall posts to be content-neutral.

Had the high court taken up ED v. Noblesville School District, it could have clarified the precedent set by a 1988 decision that significantly rolled back student speech protections and angered free speech advocates.

Lawyers for the now-graduated student argued that the precedent set in earlier Supreme Court decisions is unclear and inconsistently applied among lower courts. Their petition asked the high court to resolve this “long-standing and deep circuit divide,” saying students receive different protections depending on where they live.

The U.S. Supreme Court on June 15 rejected the former students’ request to bring the case, but Justice Samuel Alito disagreed with his colleagues. In his dissent, he argued that the Supreme Court should clarify the fuzzy lines of previous decisions., Known as the Hazelwood Incident, which of the following protects student speech from censorship by administrators?

“Since the Hazelwood decision was issued, lower courts have struggled to ascertain its precise limits, and, in my view, clarification by this court is necessary,” Alito wrote.

Explanation of the anti-abortion leaflet lawsuit

The Noblesville graduate, identified in the lawsuit as ED, started a chapter of “Students for Life of America” in 2021 and attempted to post a flyer advertising the first meeting.

She used the national organization’s template, which featured a photo of a student holding a sign that read, “Exempt Planned Parenthood Funding” and “I’m a Pro-Life Generation.”

According to court filings, school administrators repeatedly instructed students to modify their flyers to include only meeting information. They asked her to omit the photo to comply with the school’s content-neutral rules regarding wall postings.

According to court documents, the school became concerned that the club was not fully student-led after the student’s mother met with leaders to get the flyer approved. Principal Craig McCaffrey temporarily suspended the club following “an attempted insubordination by an outside adult advocating for the students.”

The club was eventually reinstated, but students and their parents still sued the school district, claiming it violated their First Amendment and Equal Access Act rights. They argued that the decision to veto her leaflet distribution and temporarily suspend the club was “driven by hostility to her pro-life views.”

Lower courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Southern Indiana and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, sided with the school, finding that the policy did not violate her free speech rights and that the school did not treat her club differently than other clubs.

Attempt to rethink Hazelwood standards

The former Noblesville students’ petition argued that the Supreme Court’s 1988 Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeyer decision is confusing because of contradictory circuit court precedent.

Under Hazelwood, the court gave school administrators more power to police school-sponsored student speech for “reasonable” educational and administrative concerns. The case focused on whether school leaders could kill articles in student newspapers, but the students’ petition argued that circuit courts have struggled to be consistent about what counts as school-sponsored speech.

The petition said a “patchwork of constitutional protections” creates disparities in the range of in-school speech rights available to students based on their place of residence. The Noblesville School District and its attorneys rejected the idea that case law is inconsistent.

Some courts have allowed schools to restrict speech that a “reasonable observer” might assume to be school-sponsored, even if it is not. This includes the 7th Circuit, which held that Noblesville students’ flyers could reasonably be considered school-sanctioned, and therefore the school could restrict their speech.

But other circuit courts have ruled on narrower grounds, finding that schools can only restrict school-sponsored activities “for the purpose of imparting specific knowledge or skills,” the petition states.

The students’ petition had the support of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, Turning Point USA, several conservative groups, and 12 state attorneys general.

“Hazelwood is a weak and discredited precedent, and this court should grant review here for an opportunity to instruct lower courts to interpret this decision as narrowly as possible,” FIRE said in its court brief.

Bill Ritter details emotional reaction to Alzheimer’s diagnosis

The longtime WABC-TV anchor announced he will retire from the station’s evening newscast after being diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s disease.

play

ABC News anchor Bill Ritter has opened up about his health history after revealing his Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.

The longtime WABC TV anchor, who announced his departure from WABC-TV’s evening news program on June 12, detailed his emotional reaction to receiving an early-stage Alzheimer’s diagnosis in an interview on “Good Morning America” on June 15.

“My first reaction was, it reminded me of my dad. I thought of him,” said Ritter, 76, who lost her father to Alzheimer’s disease in 1998. “And a few seconds later I was scared. I don’t care if I say that. I was scared, because I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I’m supposed to be doing this. What’s going on here?'”

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by abnormal biological processes in the brain that often cause cognitive decline. Symptoms include forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, and difficulty reasoning, problem solving, and making decisions.

Ritter told “Good Morning America” that he started experiencing memory loss about two years ago. “I found myself forgetting people’s names and places,” he says. “I didn’t understand why that happened.”

The TV journalist said he later decided to get tested after his symptoms did not improve after taking other health measures, such as reducing his work schedule and increasing his sleep time.

“That was really important,” Ritter continued. “A lot of people say, ‘It’s okay, don’t worry, it’s going to be fine.’ No, you have to do this.”

Despite leaving WABC’s anchor desk, Ritter said in an announcement Friday that he has taken on a new role mentoring up-and-coming journalists while continuing to cover Alzheimer’s disease at the station.

“My job as a journalist is to be honest with the public,” Ritter said of his decision to reveal his diagnosis on “Good Morning America.” “What we’re dealing with is truth and facts. We felt we had an obligation to be honest with our viewers about this.”

President Trump’s name is outside the Kennedy Center, but a tarp is blocking the view

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s name is no longer at the Kennedy Center, but no one can see the change because a giant tarp is blocking it.

More than two days after crews removed Trump’s name before dawn, the public still hasn’t gotten a daytime glimpse of the Kennedy Center’s restored facade, which had Trump’s name removed.

Construction workers working behind a section of large tarp attached to scaffolding were peeling off the president’s name letter by letter at 3:10 a.m. ET on Saturday, June 13. The venue has passed a judge’s deadline to remove it from the center’s exterior after a last-ditch effort to keep Trump’s name failed in court. The canvas tarp was later repositioned to cover the entire scaffolding, completely obscuring the sign’s view by daylight.

On Monday, June 15, the curtains remained attached to the scaffolding. In addition, the facility has installed fences and barricades to prevent access near the restored sign that now reads “THE JOHN F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS.” Three security guards are stationed in the security area.

The blue-and-white tarp protected it for the time being from having to contend with an embarrassing image that disappeared just six months after its name was added to the side of the historic site after Trump took over the board. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled on May 29 that the renaming of the Kennedy Center, which was built to honor President John F. Kennedy after Trump’s assassination, was illegal and required action by Congress. The judge ordered that the 47th president’s name be removed from all materials, including billboards, by June 12.

But the center insists the tarpaulin is not there to hide the changed name. A spokesperson for the center told USA TODAY that the tarpaulin remains in place to allow construction crews to attend to maintenance needs on the building’s marble exterior and soffit panels beneath the center’s overhang.

As part of a planned $257 million renovation of the center, the center is replacing more than 2,000 pounds of soffit panels on the edge of the building, which it says poses a public safety risk. During a media tour in April, Kennedy Center officials said water damage from rooftop planters damaged the panels, and the center was tracking seven locations around the building where ceiling panels were in poor condition.

The center said improper drainage also caused discoloration of some of the marble in the building. Both modifications will be made during the first year of the two-year renovation.

The public cannot yet view Trump’s unnamed center, but its leaders told a federal court that it has been removed. The center’s executive director, Matthew Floca, provided Cooper with a signed statement on Saturday, June 13, saying the center had complied with his orders.

In his statement in court, Floca blamed “weather delays” for the center’s failure to meet the judge’s deadline of midnight June 12. Workers stopped working during scattered thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C., area, but workers remained idle for long periods when it wasn’t raining.

Workers began stripping Trump’s name from the center after both the Cooper court and a federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration’s last bid to suspend the order.

In his May 29 ruling, Cooper also blocked President Trump’s plan to close the Kennedy Center for two years, arguing that the center’s board of directors did not properly vote to close the center in March.

Algae gives DC’s reflecting pool its green hue. it may last for months

0

play

The Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool is overflowing with algae, days after the landmark underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, leaving visitors wondering if it will be ready in time for Independence Day, the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

Photos taken over the weekend show National Park Service workers working to remove algae from a pool that has turned the water green. The basin in the pool was painted a deep navy “American flag blue” in preparation for Independence Day. The pool in Washington DC is approximately 2,000 feet long and 160 feet wide.

Renovation work began in April and was completed earlier this month. According to the New York Times, repairs to the pool cost a whopping $13.1 million.

In an earlier statement to USA TODAY, the Interior Department said the new color improves the pool’s reflective properties compared to the old gray concrete, which had become “slimy green” with algae buildup.

Environmental experts told USA TODAY the greenery could remain for months. Here’s what we know:

Expert: July temperatures could be bad news for reflecting pools

There are questions about whether the reflecting pool will return to its sparkling blue color ahead of the holiday season.

Hans Pearl, a research professor of marine and environmental sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told USA TODAY on Monday, June 15, that the pool is still affected by algae and could appear green by the semi-quincentennial.

“Independence Day is probably the worst time of the year because the temperatures are the highest,” he said. “Mother Nature is really running the show.”

Algae thrives in hot climates, but disappears in winter, he explained.

DC is notorious for being hot and humid during the summer months. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told USA TODAY that this summer’s forecast is for above-normal conditions. In July, the region will experience several days of temperatures in the upper 80s to 90 degrees.

The region is also surrounded by many sources of moisture and moisture, including the Chesapeake Bay watershed and the Potomac River.

Pearl said pools need to be drained to remove algae. In that case, you will need to treat the water before refilling your pool. However, even after treatment, the water may still contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that promote algae growth. Although these nutrients can be reduced, they cannot be removed to levels low enough to completely prevent algae from returning.

It is possible to treat water with chemicals such as chlorine, but the chemicals can affect animals such as ducks that drink pool water, Pearl said.

In addition, such treatment is expensive.

“The cure may be worse than the problem,” he said, and advised authorities to “wait and see” until cooler weather after September.

“You can understand colors a little bit more,” he added.

USA TODAY has reached out to the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior for comment. NPS previously announced it would collect and remove algae from pools.

Why was the reflecting pool renovated?

President Donald Trump announced plans to renovate the reflecting pool in April, according to a previous report by USA TODAY. He said the pool had been the subject of complaints due to leaking foundations and uncleanliness.

He told reporters that contractors will sandblast, caulk and resurface the pool basin. The pool is part of a citywide effort to spruce up landmarks ahead of Independence Day.

Before pool bottoms were made of concrete, pool basins were made of black asphalt. In some places, the water was dyed black to improve reflection. Before the renovation, the pool was leaking 16 million gallons of water a year, according to the National Park Service.

President Donald Trump selected Atlantic Industrial Coatings to perform the renovation work. President Trump said he chose the company because it worked at a golf club in Sterling, Virginia.

He continued to brag about the updated landmarks.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, President Trump announced that his Fourth of July rally would be held on the National Mall “with the Lincoln Memorial in the backdrop and the beautiful new reflecting pool.”

What did NPS previously do regarding water?

The National Park Service typically takes several measures to prevent algae growth and maintain water quality in reflecting pools. A 2009 report said the agency was treating the water, removing debris and cleaning the pool.

The reflecting pool is filled with potable city water. The D.C. Water and Sewer Department treats water with chloramine, a disinfecting compound that lasts longer than chlorine and prevents contamination. This water has no long-lasting disinfectant effect once placed in the reflecting pool.

In addition, NPS treats the reflecting pool with a proprietary algae control agent. Still, algae growth has remained a consistent problem for many years. The report said authorities had previously considered various ways to combat algae growth. One method was to use a small device, about the size of a soda can, to emit acoustic frequencies that disrupted the bloom.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was constructed between 1920 and 1923.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, an outspoken Democrat who has long sparred with the commander-in-chief on social media, said he was on President Donald Trump’s “hit list” and noted that the Justice Department appeared to be investigating him and his wife.

“Today, my wife and I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He directed the Justice Department to investigate us. They haven’t found a crime. They’re just trying to find a crime,” Newsom said in a video posted to X on June 15. “He’s not going after me because of some mean tweets, but because he’s considering me running for president.”

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Newsom said Trump “hates that I consistently criticize him. He is simply the most corrupt president in American history.”

Newsom said he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have “nothing to hide.”

“Mr. President, follow me. I’m not going anywhere,” Newsom continued. “The state is watching”

Will the US-Iran peace deal mean an improvement in gas prices and inflation?

With the United States and Iran agreeing to a framework agreement to end months of war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one thing is certain. That means the cost of living crisis has become just a little less serious.

However, how much the reduction will be and how long it will last remains an open question, especially considering the details of the deal are unclear.

“How many times have we talked about a ceasefire? We’ve been here before, and we’ve seen the same reaction over and over again,” said John Mousseau, chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors, a subsidiary of MidPenn Bancorp.

Still, for American consumers, every little bit helps.

How much will gas prices fall?

On June 15, the national average gasoline price fell below $4 a gallon for the first time since mid-April, albeit at just $3.99, according to metrics compiled by GasBuddy. Brent crude oil, the world standard, was trading at about $82.61 per barrel, the lowest price since early March.

“At this point, unless there is a dramatic reversal and the US and Iran continue to move in a positive direction, the national average could continue to decline,” said Patrick de Haan, head of oil analysis at Gasbuddy.

Still, he cautioned that there is little reason to believe this price easing will continue until the Strait reopens and oil flows begin to move normally.

Analysts at Oxford Economics agreed, writing in a research note published early June 15: “The US-Iran deal is an important step towards reaching a full-fledged agreement. However, there are likely to be bumps in the road, and it will still be some time before shipping in the Strait of Hormuz approaches pre-war levels.”

Is the Iran peace deal good for the US economy?

The money freed up from lower pump costs should help support the overall economy.

“Every $0.10 in gasoline prices increases spending on gasoline by about $12.3 billion, equivalent to about 0.06% of consumer spending that cannot be spent on other goods and services,” the University of Oxford wrote in March.

Beyond the prices of the specific things households need, an end to hostilities is also likely to mean a decline in broader measures of inflation.

The consumer price index compiled by the Labor Department has risen sharply since the start of the war. The annual inflation rate was stable at 2.4% in February before the conflict began. It rose to 3.3% in March and rose again to 3.8% in April as supply chain disruptions and higher fuel prices raised the cost of producing other goods.

Ben Shoesmith, senior economist at KPMG Economics, said in a note published June 15 that it will take “several quarters” for global supply chains to return to normal, so price pressures will remain high “for some time.”

What does the end of the war mean for the Fed?

Inflation indicators are important because the Federal Reserve looks at changes in overall prices when determining interest rate policy. Many economists believe the easing announced this week may help policymakers make the case for keeping interest rates on hold. The Fed is scheduled to announce its next interest rate decision on June 17th.

“It’s still possible that these inflation concerns prove to be temporary,” said Don Rismiller, chief economist at Strategas. “At the very least, the recent drop in oil prices should buy central bankers time to find out.”

However, the Fed is not the only market force that determines the direction of interest rates.

Investors in U.S. Treasuries also hold many cards. Since the war began, these investors have made clear that they expect inflation to rise, which will erode the value of the income that bonds provide. When investors sell bonds, the yield (interest rate) increases. The flip side of this is that bond issuers have to pay higher yields, or interest rates, to entice investors to buy.

So far, bond investors have not reacted to the announcement of the peace deal as much as the oil market. The 10-year soared to 4.671% in early May and has been falling choppyly since then. However, it has remained roughly flat since the deal was announced over the weekend.

“The bond market needs more convincing that inflation will not be baked into the economy,” Mousseau told USA TODAY.

There are several effects of rising government bond yields. Among them, US 10-year bonds are also attracting attention as mortgage interest rates remain high. But more simply, when the government has to spend more to finance its operations, especially when war spending increases and tax cuts reduce revenue, the budget has less room to include other items such as health care and social security.

J.D. Vance says his wife Usha changed his life for the better with his new book ‘Communion’

WASHINGTON – Vice President J.D. Vance admitted he was wrong to criticize Democratic women as “childless cat ladies” in his upcoming book, calling it one of the stupidest things he’s ever said and “bone-cracking.”

In his memoir “Communion,” which centers on his conversion to Catholicism, Vance cited this episode during his 2021 run for the Ohio Senate as one of the lessons of his faith for Christian politicians.

Politicians must have more respect for the other side when it comes to family policy debates, he writes, and he says he’s largely included in that assessment.

“It’s okay to admit you’re wrong,” he writes. “One of the stupidest things I ever said was when I claimed that the entire Democratic Party’s ‘childless cat ladies’ were ruining our country.”

The issue is part of a series of chapters in which Vance, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, explains his Christian faith through anecdotes about his policy positions. USA TODAY obtained a copy of the book ahead of its June 16 release.

childless cat woman

Vance, 41, acknowledged in his book that the childless cat lady’s comments were “deliberately (and successfully) more provocative than enlightening” and that he could have gotten his point across “more effectively” while showing more charity toward childless Americans.

“Given the Church’s exhortation to respect the dignity of all life, this was clearly a moment of failure for me,” Vance wrote.

This is the second time Vance has attempted to clean up his comments, following when he ran for vice president. Vance said at the time that he wished he had a better way to articulate his view that the country was becoming anti-children.

It is one of the “characteristics of the striver culture” that Vance most resents in his memoirs. “The idea is that if you raise a family, you won’t be able to reach your full potential in your professional life, so you shouldn’t have children.”

Elsewhere, he writes that he thought the same way before becoming a husband and father and rediscovering his Christian faith.

“I had become a hard worker without realizing it, so focused on winning the game of life that I ignored deeper truths,” Vance said.

JD Vance’s vices

It was one of the vices that troubled him, the Republican said, and was probably present from early in his life.

“And yet, as I went through life winning all the awards society told me to, I came to feel as an adult that I had lost something important that had enriched me as a child, despite my outward flaws.”

Vance’s first book, Hillbilly Elegy, recounts his childhood in Appalachia and his mother’s struggle with drugs, which became a bestseller and was made into a major movie. “Communion” is a sequel to the memoir.

The vice president spoke to USA TODAY about the book and his Christian faith before its publication, saying in an interview that the desire to “be better than others” he writes about in the book is probably part of who he is.

In the book, he blames the hyperindividualism expressed in philosopher Ayn Rand and her novel Atlas Shrugged on her college beliefs, but notes that her books do not feature children.

“I wanted to win for the sake of winning,” he writes in one passage.

He says he was running a race he didn’t fully understand. “I had no idea why I wanted to go to law school or what I wanted to do with my life,” Vance wrote in another article.

crisis of faith

Guilt and fear are recurring themes in Vance’s books. He feels guilty for abandoning his mother, Beverly Vance Akins, and for cutting her off financially, making him a bad son. Guilt for tying his future wife, Usha Vance, to a life she didn’t consent to. Fear that he will ruin his relationship with Usha and she will leave him.

Vance said he turned away from Christianity after the death of his grandmother, Bonnie Blanton Vance, in 2005 (he calls her Mamaw in the book). He says Mamaw was the only person he allowed himself to become weak before she died, and the grief of her death consumed him.

“After she left, no one cared about my faith, and soon I stopped caring,” Vance wrote.

Vance says he was no longer a Christian by the time he returned from Iraq, where he served as a media relations officer with the U.S. Marines.

He did not go to church and became increasingly dissatisfied with religion. He said he considered himself an atheist when he was a student at Ohio State University in 2007, but Vance, the first in his family to attend a four-year college, says that’s when he drifted away from his roots.

“I was becoming disconnected from the culture that had made me who I was,” Vance wrote.

Anchor is Usha Vance

In his book, Vance credits his wife, Usha, whom he met at Yale while attending law school, for changing his life.

Although Usha was “fiercely competitive,” he says he was first drawn to her smile and intelligence. The couple married in 2014.

“Usha now counted on me, and my first duty was to her,” he writes about their childhood.

The couple currently have three children and are expecting a fourth. In the book, he writes that even though she is Hindu and has no interest in becoming Catholic, she is the “anchor” of the family, managing the Sunday morning chaos of rushing the children to Mass and encouraging them to reconnect with their faith in a formal way.

“Usha’s belief that church was ‘good for me’ gave me permission and inspiration,” Vance wrote. “I wanted more than anything to be worthy of this woman. If the church would help me, I would sit my butt in the pew every Sunday.”
