Florida-based outdoor retailer West Marine has filed for bankruptcy and plans to close dozens of stores, the company announced this week.
The closures include 59 locations in 23 states. These announcements came after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 17, according to online court documents.
Company records list more than 100,000 creditors, assets between $500 million and $1 billion, and liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion.
“West Marine has confirmed that it will close certain retail stores as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 reorganization. This decision reflects our efforts to align our store footprint with current business needs as we continue to work with our landlords to evaluate our portfolio,” the company said in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday, June 15.
The company said it would assist crew members affected by the closure, but did not immediately provide additional details.

According to West Marine’s website, each store scheduled to close will have a sale on merchandise. For example, the company’s Spokane store said in a recent Instagram post that its store liquidation sale has already begun and is expected to last until August or September.

The company did not immediately confirm closing dates for each location.
Why would a company close a store?
West Marine said in court documents that recent efforts to improve its financial position date back to at least 2023.
In March and September of the same year, the company recorded large amounts of debt. Other financial stressors included long-term lease obligations, including 200 leases requiring annual payments of $55 million.
“[These leases]have depleted liquidity and have proven to be an insurmountable obstacle that cannot be adequately addressed without this Chapter 11 filing,” the company wrote.
“In addition to declining consumer discretionary spending, the boating, marine and outdoor recreation sector will continue to struggle generally in 2026,” West Marine said in court documents. “This is primarily due to the significant rise in diesel prices, the inflationary situation and global supply chain difficulties, all of which contributed to the need for a deal in 2023 and has not abated since then.”
