The beaver will be ready soon in the desert.

Buc-ee’s will open its next store in Arizona outside Phoenix in just over a month, as the Texas gas station and convenience store chain continues to expand beyond the South.

Buc-ee’s opened its first Ohio store in Huber Heights earlier this year and will open its westernmost store in Colorado in 2024. The company plans to add its first stores in Louisiana, Kansas and Wisconsin by the end of 2027.

Founded in 1982, the company has become one of the Lone Star State’s best-known export companies. The sprawling gas station has a cult following centered around its insanely clean restrooms and unique cuisine. We currently have 55 locations in 12 states.

Burbank wins Democratic Senate primary in Nebraska

Cindy Burbank resigned and pledged to support populist independent Dan Osborne. Pollsters say the former union president has a good chance of unseating the Republican incumbent.

Former pharmacy technician Cindy Burbank, 62, won the Democratic Senate primary in Nebraska on May 12, making it an unusual race for incumbent Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts.

The weird part? Burbank vowed that if he wins but doesn’t see a clear path to victory, he will withdraw from the November election and support Dan Osborn, a populist independent who is within 7 percentage points of winning the 2024 Senate race in a solidly Republican state.

Osbourne, 51, finished significantly better than the 21 points former Vice President Kamala Harris got from President Donald Trump in the Cornhusker State.

Burbank defeated William Forbes with about 90% of the vote, according to the Associated Press. CNN reported on March 30 that Forbes, a 79-year-old pastor, is a registered Democrat but has voted for Trump three times and attended a Republican training event earlier this year.

The Nebraska Democratic Party denounced his last-minute candidacy as an example of Republican interference in the primary in a plan to siphon votes from Osborne in the fall.

Democratic candidate Burbank faced similar pushback from Nebraska Republicans. State Republicans have criticized Burbank’s bid as an unfair and systematic ploy by Democrats to support Osborne, an independent.

Burbank, Osborne and Forbes did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the top results.

According to the Associated Press, Ricketts, who was appointed to the Senate in 2023 with the support of President Trump, won the Republican nomination with 80% of the vote.

The Nebraska Republican thanked his supporters in a statement, but quickly signaled he was preparing for a tough fight against Osborne in November. Someone who draws support from outside the state.

“Our work is not done yet. Out-of-state liberal donors will pour millions of dollars into Nebraska this fall,” Ricketts said in a statement, urging people to donate to his campaign. “Send a message to them: Nebraska elections will not be bought.”

Osborne, a former union president and military veteran, first caught fire among progressives during a 77-day strike at a Kellogg cereal factory in 2021. As president of Omaha’s local labor union, he led the fight over pay and benefit issues, including the loss of premium health care and reductions in retirement benefits.

The clash catapulted Osborne onto the national stage. His unique political views include support for gun rights, legalizing medical marijuana, expanding reproductive rights, and making it easier for labor unions to organize.

Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said a consistent theme in several Democratic primaries this year has led candidates to align more with working-class voters than with corporate donors.

That means building a consensus to defeat Ricketts outside of the traditional Democratic primary system, which has consistently failed to produce strong candidates in general elections. Nebraska hasn’t had a Democratic senator in nearly 15 years.

“Osborne is a perfect example of someone who is a culturally attuned working-class populist who can avoid some of the baggage associated with the Democratic Party brand that needs to be addressed in the medium to long term but doesn’t have time in the short term,” Greene said.

Osborne has promised not to caucus with either major party, telling USA TODAY that voters in the state are tired of politicians of both parties and are “looking to corporate interests to finance their campaigns.” Instead, he said, he wants elected leaders who support the average working people who “run this state,” including farmers, ranchers and small business owners.

“We are stuck in a destructive two-party loop, and the rest of us are all paying the price,” he said in a statement. “I’m running to disrupt the status quo of partisan politics in Nebraska because this system isn’t working for any of us.”

Katherine Legg becomes first woman to run Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600

In a career spanning nearly 30 years in motorsport, there’s not much that Catherine Legge hasn’t accomplished.

She raced for Ferrari in Bahrain and Audi in Germany. She drove in the A1 Grand Prix, Formula E, and IMSA Sports Car Championship.

She also competes in the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Cup Series.

Later this month, the 45-year-old from England plans to do both on the same day.

Legge will be the first woman to attempt “The Double” when she competes in the Indy 500 and Charlotte’s Coca-Cola 600 on May 24th. She confirmed her plans in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY Sports this week.

“These are exciting times,” Legge told USA TODAY Sports. “This is another milestone that allows me to show the world that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and that you can probably achieve things you never dreamed of before.”

Sponsoring her car at both events will be Elf Cosmetics, the first beauty brand to sponsor in motorsport when it began partnering with Legg several years ago.

“They changed the face of racing for me, which is really special because I never thought I could truly be myself and be successful as a woman in racing. I was always trying to fit in. Usually race car sponsors and partners don’t necessarily talk to women. That allows me to do things like The Double because they believe in me.”

Legge will pilot the No. 11 Chevrolet for HMD Motorsports with AJ Foyt Racing at the Indy 500 and will then take the wheel of the No. 78 Chevrolet at Live Fast Motorsports in Charlotte.

She started exploring the possibility of taking on The Double several years ago.

“Elves always want to do something groundbreaking, something newsworthy, something big and cool, right? They want to be disruptive,” Legge said. “Last year was when we really started planning and figuring out how to leverage all of our corporate channels. At the time, I wasn’t a NASCAR Cup driver, so I had to go to a lot of races to get my license before they would let me (race at the superspeedway). Then we worked hard to get the right partners and the right people to help.”

If Legg is able to compete in both races, she will become the sixth driver in motorsport history to attempt the double. John Andretti made his first attempt in 1996, followed by Robbie Gordon five times, Tony Stewart twice, Kurt Busch in 2014, and most recently Kyle Larson in 2024 and 2025.

Stewart was the most successful of the five drivers to date, finishing sixth at Indy and third at Charlotte in 2001.

It’s one of the toughest tests of endurance and skill in all of motorsport, as drivers attempting the Double attempt to cover more than 1,100 miles in one day with little recovery time between the two races.

“It requires a level of endurance and precision that few people have pursued in history,” Legge said. “I don’t know if it would drive me crazy to want to do that.”

But stamina challenges are nothing new for Legge. She was the first woman to compete in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and has also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

This is Legge’s fifth time competing in the Indy 500, and she is the only woman in the field this year. Her best finish was 22nd place, and she holds the record for fastest qualifying time for a woman at the Indy 500.

“Especially on the Indy 500 side, we feel like we have a great team and a car that can finish well,” Legge said.

Legge made her NASCAR Cup Series debut last season, becoming the first woman to compete in the series since 2018. This will be Charlotte’s ninth time competing in a Cup race, her best finish being 17th at last year’s Brickyard 400.

In addition to the endurance challenges of attempting a double, there are also logistical hurdles that Ledge has to deal with. The Indy 500 starts at 12:45 PM ET and the green flag for the Coca-Cola 600 drops at 6 PM. She will take a helicopter from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the airport, board a plane to Charlotte, and once she lands, she will take a helicopter to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Legge will be fed and hydrated on the plane and will receive an intravenous drip to replenish his electrolytes.

I would go back and forth the day before. That Saturday, she must attend a drivers’ meeting in Indianapolis before heading to Charlotte to qualify for the NASCAR race.

“It was planned out to the minute. It was just a lot of left turns that day,” Legge said. “I hope the weather is okay. I’ll go anywhere.”

If Reggi is unable to reach Charlotte on time due to weather delays or other issues, her team will have a backup driver available to take the green flag and start the race.

Ledge’s historic attempt at the double also came 50 years after Janet Guthrie broke the motorsport barrier. She was the first woman to complete a practice lap at the Indianapolis 500, but failed to qualify for that year’s race.

Instead of throwing in the towel, Gasly quickly pivoted to NASCAR and went to Charlotte to qualify for the World 600. She finished 15th in the race, becoming the first woman to compete in the Cup Series at a superspeedway track. The following year, Gasly became the first woman to compete in the Indy 500 and Daytona 500.

Legge hopes her endeavor at The Double will get more young women interested in motorsport. Between Danica Patrick’s last NASCAR Cup race and Legge’s debut, more than seven years had passed without a single woman competing at that level.

She worries that NASCAR will suffer another drought without women at the Cup level.

“There doesn’t seem to be anyone waiting behind the scenes ready to take on that belief,” Legge said. “How many years will it take until the next me comes along? There are some girls in the Truck Series that I don’t think have what it takes to get there. We need to develop the next generation so they can pass the baton to me, so to speak. But unfortunately, there seems to be a big gap these days. And that’s on the IndyCar side, the open-wheel side, and the NASCAR side as well.”

Legge named Laney Buis as a promising driver in the ARCA Menards Series. The 19-year-old finished fifth at Kansas this season, but has a long road to the top level of NASCAR.

“Realistically, that’s probably four or five years away. And she’s only a year old, you know?” Legg said. “We need about five or six drivers. There are hundreds of good male drivers and only a handful make it. It’s just a numbers game. It’s just about increasing interest, increasing accessibility, increasing awareness, highlighting female talent and helping people understand that it’s possible.”

“You have to see it for that to be the case.”

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5 and allows players to choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose easy pick/quick pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered 1-70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase your non-jackpot prize by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Iran war looms over summit meeting between President Trump and China’s Xi Jinping

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is unlikely to get the “big, fat hug” he envisions from China’s notoriously tough leader Xi Jinping when he arrives in Beijing for a pompous visit and talks on Iran.

Firm handshakes and ceremonial red carpets are more like it. There were also many twists and turns regarding US military support for Taiwan.

“We’re smart and working together very well! Isn’t that better than fighting????” President Trump said of authoritarian leaders in April. “He’s a great gentleman. I think he’s a great guy,” President Trump told reporters on May 11.

President Trump has prioritized relationships with world leaders, viewing them as “one of his special skills and one of his unique strengths,” said Alexander Gray, who served as Asia director at the National Security Council in Trump’s first administration and then as chief of staff.

But Gray said, “The president is also very aware of the fact that what Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party want is 180 degrees different in many ways from what the United States wants.”

China is the United States’ biggest economic rival, and Beijing is closely aligned with Washington’s longtime enemies Moscow and Iran, which are directly or indirectly involved in armed conflicts.

Since the coronavirus pandemic exposed supply chain vulnerabilities, U.S. administrations and lawmakers from both political parties have taken aggressive steps to wean the U.S. from Chinese-made products. For much of last year, President Trump and President Xi engaged in an ugly trade war.

“You can respect someone as a leader, but you can also become their competitor, or even their enemy,” said Kelly Ann Shaw, one of the negotiators for the U.S.-China trade deal during the Trump administration.

Current and former U.S. officials say President Trump wants a stable relationship with China, but at the same time the U.S. is preparing for long-term economic competition with China.

The Chinese government also stressed its intention to “expand cooperation and manage differences in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit” ahead of the next meeting.

Iran is a top priority for President Trump

War in Iran and keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed will be on President Trump’s menu, but the US leader declared a ceasefire on “massive life support” and called Iran’s latest proposals to end the conflict “garbage.”

China is Iran’s largest trading partner, and Iran has allowed large numbers of Chinese-flagged ships to pass through the blockade. China has sought to walk a neutral line amid ongoing tensions and has echoed Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, calling for a “comprehensive ceasefire” in recent days.

On May 12, when President Trump was asked what message he had for Xi Jinping regarding Iran, he said, “We’re going to have a long conversation about this. To be honest, I think Mr. Xi has handled it relatively well. If you look at the blockade, we’ve had no problems. They’re extracting a lot of oil from that area, and we haven’t had any problems.”

A U.S. official previewing the trip for reporters said Trump has spoken with Xi multiple times about China’s support for Iran and Russia, and those conversations are likely to continue.

Leaders are also expected to announce agreements to purchase aircraft and agricultural products, and possibly a joint committee on trade and investment. More than a dozen CEOs, including Tesla Inc.’s Elon Musk, Apple Inc.’s Tim Cook and Boeing’s Kelly Ortberg, have been invited to accompany Trump on his trip, according to a White House list.

Trump also said he would address the detentions of Chinese pastor Ezra Jin Mingli and businessman Jimmy Lai, former publisher of the Hong Kong-based independent newspaper Apple Daily.

President Trump said of Lai on May 11, “The people want him out, and I want to see him out, so I’m going to bring him up again.”

President Xi expected to elevate Taiwan

For China, the potential sale and delivery of $25 billion worth of arms and other defense equipment to Taiwan is a top priority.

Taiwan’s legislature approved the spending last week after a long battle. The United States has approved $11 billion worth of weapons but has not shipped them. President Trump signaled this week that he was prepared to block future sales.

“I’m going to have that discussion with President Xi. President Xi would prefer that we don’t do that,” Trump said on May 11. “That’s one of the many things I’m going to discuss with President Xi.”

Gray, who served as chief of staff on the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said he believes there is not a remote possibility that the president will change U.S. policy toward Taiwan.

“One of the things that a president does is, before he goes into these public affairs, he puts things on the table for people to speculate on,” Gray said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting China with President Trump, said last week that the U.S. position has not changed, Gray said.

“So, just as nothing has changed over the last 10 years President Trump has spent in public life, there is no reason to think anything will change this time either.”

Broadly speaking, Beijing wants the United States to backtrack on its Biden-era pledge to support Taiwan in the event of a military conflict and stick to its “one China” policy. Taiwan considers itself independent, but China aims to reunite it with democratically ruled territory. U.S. intelligence agencies previously said Mr. Xi had instructed the military to prepare for an invasion as early as 2027.

President Trump said in August 2025 that President Xi told him he would not invade Taiwan during his term in the White House. According to Reuters, intelligence agencies further assessed in March that China has no current plans for invasion and wants to take control of the island without using force.

In the Oval Office ahead of his trip, President Trump suggested that the prospect of a military conflict that could involve the United States and regional allies like Japan was enough reason to maintain positive relations with China.

“I have a very good relationship with President Xi because I don’t want that to happen,” Trump said.

Competition, not conflict

Elsewhere in Washington, military assets have been moved in response to the Iran war, raising concerns that the sheer volume of weapons launched against the Middle Eastern country could seriously set the United States back in a future military conflict with China. Pentagon officials argue that it is the only adversary that can compete with the United States.

“My concern is that all the assets, missiles, forward-deployed forces, diplomatic capital that Iran uses are not currently in the Indo-Pacific region,” Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, told reporters on May 12. “The Chinese side is very aware of that.”

Two days ago, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona said on “Face the Nation” that he was shocked and disturbed by the Pentagon’s accounting of military spending in the Iran war.

“That means the American people will be less safe, whether it’s in a conflict with China in the Western Pacific or elsewhere in the world,” Kelly said.

According to an analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the U.S. military may have spent more than half of its weapons inventory, which is key to defending against China’s missile capabilities, in attacking Iran. About 2,500 Marines stationed in Japan were sent to war several months ago. Since the USS George H.W. Bush replaced the USS Gerald R. Ford in the Middle East, half of the military’s aircraft carriers and associated warships are engaged in the Iran war.

“We have patiently built up these capabilities over time,” said Kurt Campbell, who served as deputy secretary of state under former President Joe Biden, referring to military weapons and personnel transferred from Asia.

“It’s been surrendered. It’s all gone back to the Middle East. Once you lose it, it’s very difficult to get it back,” he told reporters at a May 8 briefing.

Brandon Clark of the Memphis Grizzlies dies at age 29

play

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clark has passed away, the team and his sports agency announced in a separate statement released on Tuesday, May 12th. He was 29 years old.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Clark’s death is currently being investigated as a possible overdose.

Clark was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga University and enjoyed early success in the league, earning All-Rookie honors while averaging career-highs 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds. He signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension with Memphis in 2022.

Clark’s sudden death occurred about six weeks after he was arrested in Arkansas on charges of unlawful passing, possession of a controlled substance, eluding, exceeding the speed limit and trafficking in a controlled substance. He just completed his seventh NBA season, all of which he spent with the Grizzlies.

Clark’s career has been derailed by injuries in recent years. He was limited to just six games in 2023-24 due to a torn Achilles tendon, and missed all but two games last season due to calf and knee issues.

Clark was then allegedly found in possession of more than 230 grams of kratom on April 1 when he led Cross County Sheriff’s Office officers on a multi-mile chase at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Memphis Commercial Appeals Bureau.

Although the official cause of death is unknown at this time, Los Angeles’ NBC 4 reports that Clark’s death is being investigated as a possible overdose.

Clark died in California’s San Fernando Valley, local law enforcement officials told NBC. Officials told the show that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call for a medical emergency on Monday, May 11, just after 5 p.m.

Clark was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived. According to reports, drug paraphernalia was found at the home and an investigation is underway as a possible overdose.

The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves took a hiatus on Tuesday night before Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series in memory of Brandon Clark and Jason Collins.

The Memphis Grizzlies forward died on Monday at the age of 29, and Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, also died at the age of 47 after a battle with glioblastoma, his family announced Tuesday. —Christie Ackert

Brandon Clark was one of many basketball players who took an interest in music. He released several songs under the name BCVS, rapping over beats that ranged from trap to ethereal. His profile on his music Instagram page says he has “multiple albums,” and he has said in multiple posts that making music has been “therapy” for him.

In an Instagram post of her song “All White Gold,” released in July, Clark thanked her fans for their support of her artistic endeavors.

“Thank you all for the love you’ve given me. This drop was really fun,” he said.

Following Brandon Clark’s death at age 29, Grizzlies fans placed flowers under a Clark banner outside the FedExForum in Memphis.

Ja Morant was heartbroken to hear of the death of Grizzlies teammate Brandon Clark. The two-time All-Star paid tribute to the forward on social media after news of Clark’s death broke.

Morant posted a series of posts to his Instagram Story on Tuesday, May 12, expressing his gratitude to Clark, who spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with Morant in Memphis.

According to the Mayo Clinic, kratom is an herbal extract derived from a tree that grows in Southeast Asia. In low doses, it acts as a stimulant, according to the Mayo Clinic. At high doses, it has been reported to reduce pain and anxiety. Although legal in some states, kratom is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in Arkansas.

The Grizzlies and Priority Sports released statements following Clark’s death.

The Grizzlies said they were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clark.” “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person. His impact on our organization and the Memphis community will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

“We are not devastated by the passing of Brandon Clark,” Priority Sports said in a statement. “He was so loved by all of us here and everyone whose lives he touched. He was the kindest soul who would be the first to be there for all of his friends and family. Our hearts just break for his mother, Whitney, all of his family and all of his friends. From high school to San Jose State, Gonzaga and the Grizzlies, Brandon touched everyone who was a part of his life.”

Clark was 29 years old. He was born on September 19, 1996 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

  • San Jose State (2015-17)
  • Gonzaga (2017-18)

Clark played his first two seasons of college baseball at San Jose State. He was named the Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year during his freshman season (2015-16) and was selected to the All-Mountain West First Team as a sophomore. He was also named to the All-Defense Team in his sophomore campaign.

Clark then transferred to Gonzaga and redshirted the 2017-18 season. As a junior, he played in 37 games, averaging 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 3.2 blocks, and was named West Coast Conference Rookie of the Year.

Clark was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 21st pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. The Thunder quickly traded Clark to the Memphis Grizzlies for Darius Bazley and a future second-round draft pick.

Clark spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging 10.2 points per game. This season, he suffered a calf injury in December that caused him to miss the remainder of the Grizzlies’ campaign.

Brandon Clark played his entire seven-year career with the Memphis Grizzlies, finishing fourth in NBA Rookie of the Year voting after the 2019-20 season. His general stats for all seven seasons are:

  • 2025-26: 4.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 1.0 steals in 2 games (2 starts)
  • 2024-25: 8.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.6 blocks in 64 games (18 starts)
  • 2023-24: 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.8 steals, 1.0 blocks in 6 games (1 start)
  • 2022-23: 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.7 blocks in 56 games (8 starts)
  • 2021-22: 10.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals, 1.1 blocks in 64 games (1 start)
  • 2020-21: 10.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.9 blocks in 59 games (16 starts)
  • 2019-20: 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.8 blocks in 58 games (4 starts)

In 2025, Brandon Clark founded the Brandon Clark Foundation, which aims to help families, mothers, and others affected by tragedy across Memphis. The foundation then donated to ARise2Read. ARise2Read is a nonprofit organization focused on improving children’s literacy skills outside of the classroom. Mr. Clark also hosted a holiday celebration at the Bachman Boys & Girls Club, where food, gifts and games were provided to families at the foundation, and Mr. Clark also made a donation. — Dame Michael Cole, Memphis Commercial Appeal

Huge $78 million Texas Lottery jackpot finally won

0

play

Texas Lottery officials say $78 million worth of Texas Lottery tickets were claimed days before the jackpot was set to expire.

The Texas Lottery announced that the Jury Trust Agreement Trident Trust Company, Inc. claimed the Lotto Texas jackpot prize on May 8, just six days before the May 14 deadline for winning tickets.

The winning ticket matched all six numbers (7-17-23-28-39-48) drawn on November 15, 2025. Tickets were purchased at Gordon’s Bait and Tackle in Brownsville, Texas.

Lottery officials report that the estimated annuity value of the jackpot was $78 million, but the applicant chose the cash value option at the time of purchase and received $43,757,223.10 before taxes.

The jackpot was claimed through a trust based in South Dakota. Texas Lottery rules allow legal entities such as trusts, partnerships, and corporations to claim prizes, but supporting legal documents must be verified before a payout is made.

180 days left to win lottery ticket in Texas

Texas Lottery rules allow winners to claim their lottery game prizes within 180 days of the drawing date. If the jackpot is not claimed, the money is forfeited and redirected to a state program authorized by the Texas Legislature.

The near-deadline claim ends months of speculation over one of the biggest prizes in Lotto Texas history. In April, Texas Lottery officials publicly warned players that the deadline to claim their winnings was approaching and urged ticket holders to come forward.

The jackpot began as a $5 million prize advertised on February 19, 2025, and was won over a record 116 consecutive draws before being finally won in November. At $78 million, it ranked as the sixth-largest jackpot in Loto Texas history.

What is Lotto Texas?

The Texas Lottery describes Loto Texas as a lottery game where players select six numbers from 1 to 54 for a chance to win a multi-million dollar jackpot.

Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:12pm (Central Time). Players can also purchase extras! Add-on features for an additional $1 give you the chance to increase your non-jackpot winnings by up to $10,000.

Sen. John Cornyn introduces bill to rename highway after President Trump

A more than 1,700-mile-long highway stretching from Texas to Montana could soon be named after President Donald Trump if a recently introduced bill passes.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced legislation on Monday, May 11, to designate Route 287 as Interstate 47 and name it the Trump Interstate in honor of the president, according to a news release from the senator’s office.

“Texas is Trump country, and this bill cements that legacy by designating nearly 1,800 miles of open road from the Texas Gulf Coast to the edge of the U.S.-Canada border as Interstate 47, forever remembered as the Trump Interstate,” Cornyn said.

Cornyn’s office says US-287 is the second-longest triple-digit highway in the United States. Separately from Cornyn, Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) is a co-sponsor of a bill to rename major highways.

US-287 passes through five states: Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.

From expressways to airports, etc.

The proposal to rename US-287 is the latest effort to rename places and things in honor of President Trump. Below is a partial list of buildings and centers named after current presidents.

  • Palm Beach International Airport: Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on March 30 to rename the airport after the president, after the state approved a plan to donate land in downtown Miami for the Trump Presidential Library.
  • U.S. Institute of Peace: The Trump administration renamed a building in Washington after the president. In December 2025, the State Department posted a photo of a building with the words “Donald J. Trump” written in silver letters above the inscription “U.S. Institute of Peace.”

Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player, dies after a battle with cancer.

Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, has passed away after battling stage 4 glioblastoma. He was 47 years old.

“We are heartbroken to learn that our beloved husband, son, brother and uncle, Jason Collins, has passed away after a courageous battle with glioblastoma,” his family announced in a statement released by the NBA. “Jason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him and those who admired him from afar. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers over the past eight months and the exceptional care Jason received from his doctors and nurses. He will be greatly missed by our family.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remembered Collins for changing his life.

“Jason Collins’ influence and impact went far beyond basketball, and he helped make the NBA, WNBA and larger sports communities more inclusive and welcoming for future generations,” Silver said in a statement released by the league. “He exemplified outstanding leadership and professionalism throughout his 13-year NBA career and through his dedicated work as an NBA Cares Ambassador. Jason will be remembered not only for breaking barriers, but also for the kindness and humanity that defined his life and touched so many lives.”

“On behalf of the NBA, we extend our deepest condolences to Jason’s husband Brunson, his family, friends, and colleagues across the league,” Silver added.

Collins publicly revealed his diagnosis in a first-person essay for ESPN in December 2025, describing an aggressive brain tumor that had spread to both hemispheres in a butterfly-like pattern. Standard chemotherapy had no effect on his glioblastoma, so he was forced to undergo an experimental treatment at a clinic in Singapore.

He married his husband, film producer Branson Green, in May 2025, just months before his symptoms began.

Collins came out in April 2013 in a first-person cover story for Sports Illustrated, becoming the first openly gay active athlete in any of North America’s four major sports.

“Life is so much better when you just show up as you are,” Collins wrote in her final public essay.

His best statistical season was 2004-05, when he averaged 6.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

However, the biggest moments in his career were not measured in match statistics. On February 23, 2014, Collins took the court at Staples Center for the Brooklyn Nets’ game against the Los Angeles Lakers, becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in a game in one of the four major professional sports leagues. That night, he wore No. 98, a number chosen in honor of Matthew Shepard, the 1998 murderer who helped pass landmark hate crimes legislation.

Collins played 13 seasons in the NBA for six teams. New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards. He played in 735 career games, averaging 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds. Collins was drafted 18th overall in the 2001 draft by the Houston Rockets out of Stanford University, and his rights were immediately traded to the New Jersey Nets.

He retired in 2014 and served as an NBA ambassador.

Texas man flees to Italy on charges of murdering wife, insists he is “not guilty”

0

A Texas man accused of killing his pregnant wife fled the country in early May, reportedly telling an Italian judge that he did it because he was not responsible for her death.

The man, Lee Gilley, had been charged with capital murder in connection with the October 2024 death of his pregnant wife, Krista Bauer Gilley. He was scheduled to appear in court in Texas on May 29, but on May 1, he cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and flew to Italy, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.

On May 11, during an appearance before Judge Marta Sterpos of Italy’s Turin Court of Appeal, Gilly said he fled the country to get a fair trial, Italian newspaper La Repubblica and NBC News, which had reporters in the courtroom that day, reported. He also denied killing his wife, the outlet said.

During the hearing, the judge asked Gilley if he would agree to be extradited to the United States to face charges. According to the outlet, he refused the request and then completely denied killing his wife.

“I ask for protection,” he said during his court appearance, according to La Repubblica newspaper. “My wife died and they falsely accused me. So I no longer believe in justice. I am innocent. I did not kill my wife. The only crime I committed was running away. I ran away to avoid being killed. I worked hard to escape and apply for protection in Italy.”

Report: Man says he fled ‘to get a fair trial’

Gilly told the judge he fled to Italy because he believed it was the only way to “get a fair trial,” La Repubblica reported. When asked if he would like to move to another country, Gilly said he chose Europe because “there are guarantees, and there is a strong public opinion against the death penalty in Italy.”

He now plans to fly interstate to avoid prosecution.

USA TODAY reached out to Gilley’s attorney, Ed McCleese, and the Bauer family’s attorney, Tim Ballengie, on May 12. Lawyers say a Harris County court has imposed a gag order that limits what lawyers can say to the media.

Ballengy said in a statement that Bauer’s family is “devastated to learn that the defendant has fled the United States.”

“They look forward to his return to hold him accountable and receive a fair trial that will bring justice to Krista and her unborn child.” “The family has struggled to come to terms with the loss of Krista and to see the man accused of Krista’s murder released on bail while the justice system has spent a year and a half working its way toward trial, which the defendant is now attempting to avoid.”

USA TODAY contacted Italy’s Turin Court of Appeal for more information about Gilley’s comments, but did not immediately receive a response.

The suspect gave a false name and presented forged documents to Milan airport officials.

According to court documents filed May 5 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Mr. Gilley fled to avoid prosecution. In a written statement, a deputy U.S. marshal with the U.S. Marshals Service said Gilley had his ankle monitor disconnected for the first time on May 1, 28 days before his next hearing.

A few days later, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office asked the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force to assist in the search.

Those searching for him learned that he had been traveling until May 3. While traveling that day, he took an Air Canada flight to Milano Malpensa Airport in Milan, Italy, using the name Lejeune Jean-Luc Olivier, according to the documents.

Milan border police stopped him at the airport and showed him his passport and other Belgian identity documents. This document was later found to be forged.

Immigration officials then took him into custody, according to documents.

While waiting to be deported from Italy, Gilly told authorities his true identity and admitted that he was scheduled to stand trial in the United States for the murder of his wife.

What happened in October 2024?

Gilley’s wife, Krista Bauer Gilley, died in October 2024, according to court documents reviewed by USA TODAY. According to court documents, her husband called Houston police just after 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2024, and said his pregnant wife was unresponsive.

Houston police and television station KTRK said Gilley had attempted suicide by overdosing and performed CPR. According to KTRK, Gilley told police he had gotten into an argument with his wife and when he got ready for bed three hours later, his wife was unresponsive.

Houston Fire Department medics also arrived and rushed the woman to the hospital. She died at 2:25 a.m. on October 8, several hours after the initial report.

Hospital staff said at the time that she had bruising and “obvious trauma to her face.” Doctors at the Harris County Forensic Science Laboratory determined that her death was caused by neck and upper back compression and ruled her death a homicide.

By October 11, 2024, her husband was charged with capital murder. According to the document, he was released on bail on October 17, 2024.

Who is Christa Bauer Gilley?

According to her LinkedIn page, Krista earned a bachelor’s degree in public health from Clemson University and a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked at Memorial Hermann Health System and was a rehabilitation educator and senior physical therapist prior to her passing.

Justice for Christa is an online community created in her honor on Facebook. On May 11, community organizers shared a post about her, saying it was a time to support her and her family. The page encouraged supporters to wear purple to represent domestic violence awareness.

“We are devastated by the developments in the criminal case and outraged that justice for Krista and her family feels further away,” the post reads.

Mamdani’s new budget plan relies heavily on Hochul’s help

play

In Zoran Mamdani’s first executive budget, the city relies heavily on state aid to dig itself out of a multibillion-dollar hole.

The mayor, along with Gov. Kathy Hochul, announced approximately $8 billion in additional state aid over the next two years. The governor recently said the city needed to review its spending when Mamdani asked for more support.

Here’s everything you need to know about Mamdani’s spending plan.

mamdani budget gap

On May 12, the mayor’s office announced an administrative spending plan that includes a balanced budget, which is a legal requirement. The total executive budget for fiscal year 2027 is $124.7 billion.

Mamdani has previously claimed that his government inherited a $12 billion budget gap from the previous government and had “consistently and deliberately underestimated” the deficit.

In his new budget proposal, the mayor showed heavy reliance on Hochul, who is soon up for re-election.

On Tuesday, May 12, the same day the budget was released, they announced that Hochul and the state Legislature had “secured an additional $4 billion in gap support, bringing total new state aid to nearly $8 billion over two years.”

The move seemed like a setback for the governor. Late last month, Mamdani called for more state aid to fill a budget gap that still totals about $5 billion. In response, Hochul said the city needs to take a closer look at its spending.

In February, Mr. Hochul pledged to send an additional $1.5 billion to New York City over two years to help with the fiscal crisis.

In late April, after Mamdani asked the state for more help, she explained that she had “injected $1.5 billion in fairly unrestricted funds into the city to help the city come up with a plan.” “What they’re doing is trying to find a way forward, and we’ve been encouraging the speaker and the mayor to do what every other city should do: take a hard look at spending.”

“We have supported them, and we have already said that if we need to make some changes to the budget to give them legislative authority to do certain things like write off pensions or write off police vehicles, we would be happy to put it in the budget, but we don’t have to put it in the budget.”

Mamdani’s administration, along with seeking budget support from the state, wanted to reduce the tax credit for New York City pass-through entities from 100 percent to 75 percent, with the city keeping the remaining 25 percent.

The changes will put approximately $1 billion back into the city’s pockets and “continue to save New York City residents federal taxes,” the city said in a news release.

However, Ho-chul quickly stops that idea when Mamdani’s phone call refutes him.

“We are not going to change PTET,” she said at a press conference last month. “That’s not happening.”

The two have otherwise maintained a good working relationship, announcing a new pied-à-terre tax proposal in April that plans to add an annual levy to one- to three-unit homes, condos and co-ops worth more than $5 million if the owners have another primary residence outside the city. This is one way Mamdani is considering taxing the wealthy, which is expected to raise $500 million a year.

Hochul’s office did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

President Trump says he is not considering Americans’ finances in Iran negotiations

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he is not concerned about Americans’ economic concerns about rising gasoline prices when negotiating a deal with Iran, only about stopping Iran from building a nuclear weapon.

On May 12, President Trump was asked by reporters how much the economic situation of the American people was motivating him to reach a deal to end the war with Iran, and he said, “Not in the slightest.”

The president added, “I don’t care about the economic situation of Americans. I don’t care about anyone else. I only care about one thing: We can’t let Iran have nuclear weapons. That’s it.”

President Trump’s comments – made as the consumer price index rose 3.8% in April as a result of rising oil prices stemming from the Iran war, the highest inflation rate in three years – are sure to be received well by Democrats.

President Trump has expressed increasing frustration when asked about rising gas pump prices, a major political challenge for him and the Republican Party in the 2026 midterm elections. A CNN poll released on May 12 found that 70% of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s economic policies, the lowest point of his presidency.

President Trump countered concerns by claiming that oil prices are not as high as expected, but predicted that prices would “fall like a rock” once the Iran war ends.

“As soon as this war is over, and it won’t be long, oil prices will fall and the stock market, which is already at an all-time high, will go through the roof,” Trump said.

President Trump is scheduled to leave Washington for Beijing on May 11th, where he will participate in a high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. fell slightly on May 12 to $4.50, up nearly 38 cents from last month and $1.37 from last year, according to AAA. As of February 26, two days before the US launched its first airstrikes against Iran, the average price of gasoline nationwide was $2.98.

On May 11, President Trump supported asking Congress to suspend the 18.4% federal gas tax to ease pump prices. But rallying enough Democratic and Republican supporters to pass the nation’s first federal gasoline tax holiday may be a tall order.

Netflix responds to Texas lawsuit over child spying

Netflix is fighting back against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s new lawsuit. The company has condemned spying on children as “useless” and based on “distorted information”.

In a statement to USA TODAY, the streaming platform responded to Paxton’s lawsuit filed on Monday, May 11, alleging that Netflix illegally tracks and records user data (including children’s profiles) and sells it to build consumer profiles.

“With all due respect to the great state of Texas and Attorney General Paxton, this lawsuit is baseless and based on inaccurate and distorted information. Netflix takes the privacy of our members seriously and we comply with privacy and data protection laws everywhere we do business,” the statement said.

The lawsuit, filed in Collin County District Court, alleges:

  • Netflix tracks and records your viewing habits, preferences, devices, home network, application usage, and other sensitive behavioral data across both adult and child accounts.
  • Netflix then uses this data to build detailed consumer profiles, which it sells to other companies and profits from those sales.
  • Netflix has also designed its platform to be addictive, including features such as autoplay.

Netflix has indicated it intends to fight the lawsuit in court.

“We look forward to addressing the Texas Attorney General’s complaint in court and further explaining our industry-leading child-friendly parental controls and transparent privacy practices,” Netflix’s statement concluded.

Barack Obama supports Democrats in critical Texas Senate race

0

play

Former President Barack Obama is entering the Texas Senate fight in hopes of flipping the seat for Democrats.

The New York Times reported on Tuesday, May 11, that former President Barack Obama is supporting Democratic candidate James Talarico from Texas for the Senate seat held by Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

This happened after reporters spotted the former president posing for photos with Talarico and Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Ginajosa at a taco joint in Austin, Texas.

As the Times reports, when President Obama introduced himself to the table, he asked, “Do you know our fine next governor and senator?”

No formal endorsements of Talarico or Hinajosa were announced during or after the event.

Just three leaders came together to discuss how to engage young voters and build an economy that works for working people, as the Hinajosa and Talarico campaigns say, “while eating the finest tacos Texas has to offer.”

Who is James Talarico?

Talarico is no stranger to making waves in Texas politics, having first been elected to the Texas House in 2018 to represent the 50th District, which includes north Austin and the city of Pflugerville.

Talarico still holds the seat and was talked about several times during the Texas legislative session last year.

The first time was when the state Legislature was considering the colloquially named Ten Commandments bill, which would require donated Ten Commandments placards to be displayed in Texas public schools.

During the debate, Talarico asked key House members who supported the Senate bill, “What was the Fourth Commandment?”

“Keep the Sabbath,” said state Rep. Candy Noble (R-Murphy). “Does that mean we’ll be here on Saturday?”

Talarico also made headlines in late 2025, when dozens of Democratic lawmakers fled the state during a special session called by Gov. Greg Abbott as Republicans tried to push through a new congressional map at the request of President Donald Trump.

Although the map and bill were passed and upheld by the courts, a series of events led to Talarico throwing his hat into the ring to become the next Texas state senator.

He and then-U.S. House candidate Jasmine Crockett ran competitive campaigns in the Texas Democratic primary in March, but Talarico ultimately claimed victory and a runoff was avoided.

The Republican is not so lucky, with Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton facing runoff elections in late May.

One of them is scheduled to face Talarico in the November 2026 general election.

According to a recent opinion poll, texas poll Reports on April 28 indicated Talarico had a slight lead over Republican primary runoff candidates Paxton and Cornyn.

Olivia Rodrigo’s dress sparks backlash over children’s clothing comparison

0

The 23-year-old pop star wore a baby doll dress to her Billions Club performance in Barcelona, Spain.

play

Olivia Rodrigo is thrilling fans with her latest musical era, but her fashion choices may leave a sour impression.

The Grammy-winning singer, who is gearing up to release her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, became an online sensation after her performance at Spotify’s Billions Club Show in Barcelona, Spain, last weekend. The “Billions Club” series recognizes artists who have accumulated over 1 billion streams on streaming platforms.

During her May 8 performance, the 23-year-old pop star wore a white babydoll dress. Featuring a short-sleeved floral frock and an above-thigh skirt, she accessorized the look with knee-length black leather Dr. Martens boots.

The retro-inspired dress was the same outfit Rodrigo wore in her “Drop Dead” music video.

The dainty look of the outfit sparked a backlash on social media, with some comparing Rodrigo’s dress to children’s clothing.

“Can Olivia Rodrigo just dress like a regular pop star and stop dressing like a toddler?” @arepababyy wrote about X, “If you can’t see, you’re blind.”

A babydoll dress is a short, loose-fitting nightgown-style frock often worn by adult women. The skirt of a dress usually falls around the top of the thigh. This garment includes accents such as lace, ruffles, appliqués, marabouts, bows, and bows, and is associated with a distinctive feminine look. Baby dolls are sometimes made of sheer or translucent fabrics such as nylon, chiffon, and silk.

The origins of the dress are often attributed to lingerie designer Sylvia Pedler, who developed the mini dress in 1942 in response to fabric shortages during World War II. Baby dolls were popularized in the late 50’s by Carroll Baker’s movie “Baby Doll” and Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The style made a comeback in the ’90s thanks to grunge and alternative rock artists like Courtney Love and Kat Bigeland.

Fans debate Olivia Rodrigo’s babydoll dress

Rodrigo’s babydoll dress divided fans on social media, with some commenters seeing the ensemble in a racy light.

@missiongirl4 wrote on X, “Rodrigo isn’t wearing a 60’s babydoll dress. It’s a mini dress with an empire bodice in grown-up fabrics, colors and designs. She’s wearing a pink dress that looks like a toddler would wear, with frilly underwear underneath.”

@Lois McClatch posted a photo of Rodrigo and fellow pop star Sabrina Carpenter, commenting: “We have to talk about this weird trend of highly sexualized pop stars dressing up as little girls.”

“Olivia Rodrigo was wearing a toddler sleep shirt and diaper cover,” @xoalajaisnzloa wrote.

Some fans defended Rodrigo and pushed back against characterizing the baby doll as an item of children’s clothing.

“Olivia Rodrigo makes a lot of references to the past in times like these and Baby Doll is one of them,” wrote @liviefiles. “While its name may be confusing, its history, design and purpose are clearly related to women’s lingerie and have nothing to do with children’s clothing.”

“The more I see and hear about Olivia Rodrigo, the more I can’t understand anyone who would be offended by her fashion or performance choices,” @wickedspecialst commented. “Her main audience is teenagers, but she herself isn’t that anymore. Her music, like the artist herself, has always been able to be a little spicy.”

“It’s literally just a babydoll dress.[And]they conveniently cropped the photo so you couldn’t see that Olivia Rodrigo was wearing knee-high leather boots,” wrote @lliveandalive. “Everyone’s doing weird things. Courtney Love wore something similar 10 years ago. Her makeup just came off. It’s not about pop stars, it’s about predators.”

Senate confirms Warsh as Fed governor, moving him one step closer to becoming chairman

0

play

Former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh was approved by the Senate for a new 14-year term on the Fed’s Board of Governors on May 12, moving him one step closer to becoming the central bank’s next chairman.

The vote to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee was split 51-45 along partisan lines, with Republicans supporting it and Democrats generally opposing his confirmation. Lawmakers will next begin the process of approving Mr. Warsh, a former Treasury executive, for a four-year term as Fed chairman. Senators are expected to vote on it within days.

Mr. Warsh, who has pushed for new tools and a different inflation framework from the central bank, is expected to take the seat of Fed Chairman Stephen Milan on the seven-member Federal Reserve Board. President Trump appointed Millan in August to serve out the remainder of former Gov. Adrianna Coogler’s term, which technically ends on January 31st, but Millan remained in the position until a replacement was confirmed.

Jerome Powell, whose term as chairman ends on May 15, said he will remain on the Fed’s board until January 2028, when his term does not expire. Although the move breaks precedent for stepping down as chairman, Mr. Powell said he intended to “keep a low profile.” His decision comes amid lingering concerns about the central bank’s independence due to the president’s persistent calls for interest rate cuts and the now-dropped criminal investigation against Mr. Powell, which had previously made Mr. Warsh’s confirmation difficult.

A lawsuit stemming from President Trump’s attempt to fire Federal Reserve Board Director Lisa Cook last year is underway.

Mr. Warsh rejoins the board at a time when policymakers are somewhat divided about the best path for the federal funds rate, the benchmark for national interest rates.

Rising inflation due to the Iran war and concerns about a sluggish labor market outside of certain sectors, such as health care, are straining both the Fed’s dual mandate to maintain price stability and maximum employment.

The rate-setting committee, which includes all Fed directors, has remained in wait-and-see mode so far this year, keeping interest rates unchanged at a range of 3.5% to 3.75%. The committee is scheduled to hold its next two-day meeting in mid-June, which could be Mr. Warsh’s first meeting as chairman.

California gubernatorial candidate comes to defense during debate

0

play

The crowded and high-profile primary race for California’s governor’s seat has become heated, with candidates using the forum to air accusations and allegations.

One more debate remains, but the rhetoric shows no signs of slowing down.

Democrat Xavier Becerra’s record as former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services has been called into question.

“The experience we heard from Secretary Becerra did not lead to a better outcome,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said., “That’s why 85,000 migrant children are missing,” the Democratic lawmaker said during a May 5 CNN debate.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, was once accused of belonging to an anti-government organization.

“You know you are an oath-keeper,” former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said at the same debate. “We all know that.”

Here we add additional context to some of the statements heard in recent debates.

Xavier Becerra and unaccompanied immigrant children

Mr. Becerra had been under scrutiny from multiple candidates regarding minors entering the United States without a parent or guardian and without legal immigration status.

What does that have to do with Becerra? The Department of Health and Human Services said it “must have custody and care” of such minors. The Office of Refugee Resettlement, a division of HHS, said the children would be cared for until a sponsor, “usually a family member,” could be found.

More specifically, the remarks against Mr. Becerra related to a 2023 New York Times investigation in which the newspaper reported that large numbers of unaccompanied immigrant children who came to the United States were working in violation of child labor laws. Mr. Becerra served as HHS Secretary from March 2021 through the remainder of the Biden administration.

The New York Times reported that HHS “checks in by phone” after minors begin living with a sponsor, but has been unable to reach “more than 85,000 children over the past two years.”

According to a 2023 report in the New York Times, “In all, government agencies lost immediate contact with one-third of migrant children.”

The New York Times quoted an agency spokesperson as saying that authorities “did not violate any safety concerns” and that HHS “wanted to release the children quickly in the interest of their well-being.”

“What is referenced in the New York Times article is a voluntary appeal that we are making,” Becerra told lawmakers in 2023, adding that he has tried to contact each child three times and is also trying to contact their sponsors.

“There is no need for the sponsor or the child to answer the phone, and there can be any number of reasons why the child or the sponsor may not be answering the phone, but that does not mean the child is lost, and any kind of numbers associated with those calls to indicate that the child is lost is completely false,” Becerra said.

He also said that HHS’s “responsibility to protect unaccompanied children legally ends once they are placed in the care of a vetted sponsor.”

The topic was brought up by Villaraigosa in a May 6 panel on NBC4 and Telemundo 52.

“We protected our children,” Becerra said. “We didn’t let them abuse us. They were our employers.”

Xavier Becerra and his former chief of staff

In a CNN debate, Republican businessman Steve Hilton and Democrat Villaraigosa brought up an incident involving Becerra’s former chief of staff that came to light last year.

Authorities allege that Becerra’s former chief of staff, Sean McCluskey, conspired with lobbyist Greg Campbell, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff Dana Williamson and others to steal approximately $225,000 from Becerra’s dormant campaign account for McCluskey’s personal use.

McCluskey pleaded guilty in 2025 to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California. In December, the Eastern District of California announced that Campbell had pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit fraud against the United States and to commit criminal acts against the United States.”

According to the Eastern District of California, Williamson was charged with “bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruct justice, filing a false tax return, and making false statements.” KCRA and ABC10 reported that Williamson may be facing a plea deal, citing court records.

Becerra has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

During his plea, Becerra instructed Hilton to “read the indictment.”

“If I had been involved, the U.S. attorney would have indicted me,” Becerra said. “I wasn’t involved.”

Chad Bianco and the Oath Keepers

Statements directed at Bianco also included references to his past association with the Oath Keepers. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Oath Keepers are a far-right anti-government group. Some of its members were involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

Bianco paid for a one-year membership with the Oath Keepers in 2014, the Desert Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported in 2021. However, he said at the time that he was not currently a member and had not extended his membership beyond the first year.

“Like many other law enforcement officers and veterans who were members, I did not continue my membership because I realized that this organization had nothing to offer me,” Bianco said in 2021.

During a May 5 CNN debate, Villaraigosa brought up Bianco’s past ties to the group, and a back and forth between the two ensued on the topic. Bianco answered “no” when asked if he still considered himself a member of that group.

Katie Porter and her temperament

Former Congresswoman Katie Porter said during a May 5 CNN debate: “I can’t believe that someone would want to talk about my temperament on stage after 30 minutes of interruptions, bickering, name-calling, yelling, and disrespect for everyone in public office.”

Last year, Porter went viral for a 2021 video obtained by Politico. The video showed the former congressman trying to get out of the CBS News interview by yelling at staffers to “get out of my fucking shot.”

Mr. Porter, a Democrat, has previously faced intense scrutiny over reports about his treatment of staff.

“Californians can make up their own minds about my disposition based on what they see and hear tonight,” Porter said during the debate. “If the boys’ bullying and bickering is not enough to raise questions about their temperament, then I would object to that.”

Tom Steyer and how he made his money

How Tom Steyer, the billionaire founder of the hedge fund Farallon Capital Management, amassed his wealth has been criticized by several candidates in recent debates. Specifically, Becerra said in a CNN debate that Steyer had amassed wealth through “investing in fossil fuels” and “funding private for-profit prisons.” The former was the subject of a recent report in the New York Times, while the latter was reported by the Los Angeles Times and the Fresno Bee.

Steyer, a Democrat, resigned from Farallon in 2012. The Los Angeles Times reported that in at least one instance, Mr. Steyer’s team made a clear distinction between the gubernatorial candidate and Farallon Capital, stating that it was a hedge fund, not an individual, that invested in the company formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America.

In a CNN debate, Steyer pointed to support from environmental groups and described himself as someone who would fight oil companies.

“You know, they’re spending millions of dollars trying to prevent me from getting elected,” Steyer said.

A poll conducted by California Back to Basics, an independent spending committee that supports Mahan, showed Becerra and Hilton tied at 20 percent ahead of the primary. The poll, conducted from May 3rd to May 6th, also yielded the following results:

  • Bianco: 14%
  • Stayer: 12%
  • Mahan: 10%
  • Undecided: 8%

Polls show that Porter, Villaraigosa and California Superintendent Tony Thurmond (Democratic) have single-digit approval ratings.

According to a SurveyUSA poll released on Monday, May 4, 20% of voters would vote for Hilton if the primary were held today. This was followed by Steyer with 18%. Bianco and Becerra were the only other candidates with double-digit support.

Meanwhile, another poll shared by the California Democratic Party on May 4 found that 18% of likely voters said they would vote for Hilton if the primary were held today. But 18% of likely voters also believe they support Becerra. The former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services defeated Steyer, who has frequently led among Democratic candidates in opinion polls.

When is California’s primary election?

The primary election will be held on June 2nd, and the top two gubernatorial vote-getters, regardless of party, will advance to the general election on November 3rd.
