A more than 1,700-mile-long highway stretching from Texas to Montana could soon be named after President Donald Trump if a recently introduced bill passes.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced legislation on Monday, May 11, to designate Route 287 as Interstate 47 and name it the Trump Interstate in honor of the president, according to a news release from the senator’s office.
“Texas is Trump country, and this bill cements that legacy by designating nearly 1,800 miles of open road from the Texas Gulf Coast to the edge of the U.S.-Canada border as Interstate 47, forever remembered as the Trump Interstate,” Cornyn said.
Cornyn’s office says US-287 is the second-longest triple-digit highway in the United States. Separately from Cornyn, Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) is a co-sponsor of a bill to rename major highways.
US-287 passes through five states: Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.
From expressways to airports, etc.
The proposal to rename US-287 is the latest effort to rename places and things in honor of President Trump. Below is a partial list of buildings and centers named after current presidents.
- Palm Beach International Airport: Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on March 30 to rename the airport after the president, after the state approved a plan to donate land in downtown Miami for the Trump Presidential Library.
- U.S. Institute of Peace: The Trump administration renamed a building in Washington after the president. In December 2025, the State Department posted a photo of a building with the words “Donald J. Trump” written in silver letters above the inscription “U.S. Institute of Peace.”
