Swalwell faces sexual assault allegations and calls for him to secede from race

play

Rep. Eric Swalwell, a leading candidate for California governor, has been accused of sexual assault by a former staffer in a report published by the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, April 10th.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a former employee alleged that Swalwell had sexual contact with her while working for her, and that Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice while she was “too drunk to consent.” Mr. Swalwell denied the allegations.

“These claims are false and were made on the eve of an election against the leading candidate for governor,” Swalwell said in a statement. “I have served the public for nearly 20 years as a prosecutor and lawmaker and have always protected women. I will protect myself with the facts and take legal action if necessary. My focus in the coming days, along with my wife and children, is to protect our decades of service from these lies.”

The San Francisco Chronicle also reported that Swalwell’s attorney, Elias Davai, sent the woman a cease and desist letter. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the letter demands that he stop making “false statements accusing Mr. Swalwell of sexual assault and nonconsensual sexual touching,” and threatens to sue if he does not retract his statements.

Since the publication of this article, some of Mr. Swalwell’s opponents who have been campaigning have called for Mr. Swalwell to withdraw from the race.

Mr. Swalwell has been in the spotlight for weeks after being accused of inappropriate behavior online. His campaign denied the allegations and said he was targeted because he was a leading candidate in the California gubernatorial race.

“That’s false,” Swalwell told reporters at an election town hall in Sacramento on April 8. “There was never a complaint and there was never a settlement.”

Swalwell was scheduled to hold another town hall event in Palm Desert on April 9, but it was canceled at the last minute “due to illness,” according to KESQ 3.

Allegations against Eric Swalwell

A former employee told the San Francisco Chronicle that Swalwell hounded her for several weeks after she was hired in 2019 in the Castro Valley Democratic Party district office. She alleges that Mr. Swalwell’s sexual advances began when she was 21 years old, when he sent her photos of his genitals and demanded nude photos in return.

The woman is not named in the report because she is the alleged victim of sexual assault.

She told the San Francisco Chronicle that Mr. Swalwell invited her out for drinks in September 2019, where she became “severely intoxicated” and later woke up naked in Mr. Swalwell’s hotel bed, according to the report. She said she could not remember what happened the night before, but “felt the effects of vaginal intercourse,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

In April 2024, she claimed that Swalwell “forced himself on her” after a charity event where he was honored, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The woman told the Chronicle that she was not working on Swalwell’s staff at the time and that she met with Swalwell for drinks after the event.

A few days later, she told a friend and her then-boyfriend about the alleged sexual assault, saying she “woke up once in the middle of it and told him to stop at some point,” according to text messages reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Her then-boyfriend encouraged her to report Swalwell to the police, but she said she was afraid to go to authorities because she believed police would not take her claims seriously, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. She provided the newspaper with medical records showing she was tested for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases a week after the incident, the report said.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Davayer’s cease-and-desist letter asserts that the woman was “not a victim, but a loyal and cooperative colleague,” and that “the credibility of your accusations was fatally undermined by your voluntary and cooperative relationship with Mr. Swalwell over the years following the period in question.”

Gerald Singleton, an attorney representing the woman, told the San Francisco Chronicle that “the statement was 100% factual and she has no intention of recanting it.”

Swalwell asked to withdraw from race

Several of Mr. Swalwell’s opponents on the campaign trail, including Katie Porter, Matt Mahan and Tony Thurmond, have called on Mr. Swalwell to withdraw from the California gubernatorial race.

Porter called the accusations against Swalwell “horrifying” and affirmed the courage of the women coming forward, saying in a social media post: “We believe in you and we stand with you.”

In addition, several groups and politicians who had supported Mr. Swalwell have also withdrawn their support for him.

Congressman Ro Khanna called on law enforcement and the House Ethics Committee to investigate the allegations against Mr. Swalwell. “He has to take responsibility,” Khanna told X.

Senator Adam Schiff said he was “deeply concerned” by the allegations and announced he was withdrawing his support for Swalwell.

The California Teachers Association, which endorsed Swalwell in March, said in a statement that it was “immediately suspending support” for Swalwell’s campaign, calling the allegations against him “incredibly disturbing and unacceptable.”

Commission unveils 250-foot-tall ‘Trump Arch’

0

The president’s latest attempt to rebuild Washington has just been presented to his handpicked art commission.

play

From the White House to federal buildings, President Donald Trump’s transformation of Washington continued on April 10, as his administration released drawings for a 250-foot-tall “Arc de Triomphe” spanning the Potomac River from the National Mall.

The president first teased the idea in a Jan. 23 post to Truth Social, showing three renderings of the arch he wants to build across the Arlington Memorial Bridge from the Lincoln Memorial, each with slightly different features and less than half as tall.

In the version submitted to the Art Commission, the Arc de Triomphe features two 24-foot-tall golden eagles and a gold-winged angel atop them, and the words “One Nation Under God” on one side and “Liberty and Justice for All” on the other. Many people have pointed out that this Arc de Triomphe resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and some have even called it the “Trump Arch.” That’s because when CBS News asked Arch who would honor Trump, he answered, “Me.”

The Federal Design Commission, which President Trump appointed several members after firing six appointees by former President Joe Biden, will consider the project’s design next week.

An image-oriented government

President Trump pitched the project to coincide with the United States’ 250th anniversary in July, and its themes dovetail with the president’s larger efforts to redesign things, sometimes in his own image.

In March, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that President Trump’s signature would appear on all future U.S. banknotes, the first time such a signature has been done by a sitting president. To commemorate the anniversary, the department also plans to produce a $1 coin with Trump’s face on it, as well as a 24-karat gold commemorative coin with Trump’s likeness on it. Both plans have drawn criticism from Democrats and others for violating the nation’s founding norm, which prohibits listing living presidents on currency.

A month earlier, a giant banner depicting a glaring President Trump was erected on the facade of the Justice Department headquarters in Washington, D.C., with the phrase “Make America Safe Again” printed below the president’s face.

In 2025, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was renamed the Trump Kennedy Center.

The same art commission evaluating the arch has already approved the design for President Trump’s commemorative gold coin.

There’s also the White House itself. The former property demolished its famous rose garden to install a patio and demolished its east wing to make way for a $400 million ballroom, but the effort was hit by a recent ruling in which a federal judge issued a cease-and-desist order “without express permission from Congress.”

Legal questions and challenges

As with President Trump’s other redesigns, the Arch is not without opposition.

A group of Vietnam veterans who sued to block construction claim the Trump administration failed to follow a federal law that restricts new memorials in the area, one that requires a recommendation from the Secretary of the Interior or the General Services Administration in consultation with other committees.

The White House has not said how much the arch will cost, but the president has said he intends to use private funds to pay for it. He has also pledged to use private donations to pay for a new $400 million ballroom on the White House grounds, but some ethics advocates argue that giving donors business with the federal government invites corruption.

On April 6, the Election Legal Center filed a complaint with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia asking it to investigate whether lobbyists from 35 companies failed to report donations to Mr. Trump’s projects, including renovations to the White House Ballroom and the Kennedy-Trump Center.

Seattle Mariners Ichiro Suzuki statue also includes a broken baseball bat

The Seattle Mariners honored Hall of Fame outfielder Ichiro Suzuki with a statue outside T-Mobile Park on Friday, April 10, but the unveiling ceremony did not go as planned.

As the cover was removed to reveal the Suzuki statue, onlookers, including former Mariners greats Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez, took note of the bent and broken baseball bat atop the Mariners legend’s iconic stance at the plate.

“There was a fastball in there,” joked Mariners radio chief Rick Riz, who presided over Friday’s ceremony. “And yet he hit a base!… ‘What a work of art.’

Those in attendance found humor in the awkward situation, and the statue was repaired within an hour.

Suzuki played 28 years in professional baseball, including 19 seasons in Major League Baseball. He began his MLB career with the Mariners in 2001 and played with them until 2012. During that time, he was in complete control. He was a sight to behold. He was named the AL Rookie of the Year and MVP in 2001. He also won the Silver Slugger Award, the American League Batting Champion, and the American League Stolen Base King.

His 2001 season was no fluke. Suzuki won an All-Star Award and a Gold Glove Award in each of his first 10 seasons. He set a record with 262 hits in 2004, and that record still stands.

He finished his career with 3,089 hits in 9,934 at-bats and a batting average of .311. Needless to say, his bat on the field rarely malfunctioned. Suzuki totaled 117 home runs, 780 RBIs, and an OPS of .757. His total number of stolen bases is 509.

Suzuki’s number 51 was retired by the Mariners on August 9, 2025, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame one month earlier.

The U.S. military draft will move to automatic registration. Who is affected?

0

play

Many men will soon be automatically registered as candidates for the U.S. military draft, according to the federal agency that oversees the program.

Eligible men are already required to register with the Selective Service System, which maintains a database of potential draftees. The agency is now moving to an automatic registration process rather than requiring men to register manually.

Here’s what you need to know about the new draft registration process and who’s eligible.

Who is automatically registered for the draft?

According to the SSS website, nearly all male U.S. citizens and immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register for the draft, even those who believe they are exempt from military service. Eligible men will soon be automatically enrolled in the draft instead of signing up manually.

Men who serve continuously on full-time active duty in the military between the ages of 18 and 26 are not required to register for the draft. People who have been continuously hospitalized or imprisoned from before their 18th birthday until age 25 are also exempt. Men with nonimmigrant visas are exempt as long as they hold a valid visa until they turn 26, according to the SSS website.

The Selective Service Act requires only men to register for the draft. Women can participate in active combat to serve in the military.

What is the age limit for conscription?

According to the SSS website, eligible men must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. The agency announced that from then on, it will accept registrations until men turn 26.th birthday.

When does automatic draft registration take effect?

According to the SSS website, the agency plans to implement the switch to automatic enrollment by December.

What has changed since the previous draft regulations?

The agency is moving to an automatic enrollment process rather than requiring eligible men to manually enroll. According to the SSS website, the change “transfers registration responsibility from individual men to the SSS through integration with federal data sources.”

Does that mean there will be conscription?

The Iran war and the current ceasefire have raised new questions about whether the United States will institute conscription.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said in a March 8 interview with Fox News that reinstating the draft “is not part of our current plans at this time,” but added that President Donald Trump “is keeping options on the table.”

According to the SSS, there is currently no military conscription and there has been no active recruitment since 1973. According to the SSS, a return to active military service would require Congress to amend the Selective Service Act.

What does President Trump say about the military draft?

A USA TODAY review of President Trump’s appearances and interviews from early March showed that he did not publicly comment on the potential draft legislation during the same period. However, in a September 2024 Truth Social post during the campaign, Trump said a vote for his opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, was a vote to reinstate the draft.

“A vote for President Donald J. Trump is a vote for prosperity and peace,” Trump wrote.

Eliot Engel, “passionate defender” of Trump opponent, dies at 79

0

play

Former New York Representative Eliot Engel, a Democrat who pursued President Donald Trump’s actions during his first term, has died. The longtime lawmaker from Westchester and the Bronx in New York’s 16th Congressional District is 79 years old.

The circumstances surrounding the former congressman’s death were not yet clear as of the afternoon of April 10th. Mr. Engel is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their children. He died “surrounded by his family and loved ones in the Bronx, the neighborhood that raised him,” a statement from his family said.

Born in the Bronx in 1947, Engel attended Bronx public schools, received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hunter-Lehman College, and graduated with a J.D. from New York Law School in 1987.

He began his political career as a state legislator, serving from 1977 to 1988. He was first elected to Congress in 1989 and served until 2021, when he conceded to Jamal Bowman in the 2020 election.

The Foreign Affairs Committee pitted him against President Trump.

Near the end of his Congressional career, Engel served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

As chairman, Engel spearheaded a 2019 investigation into the State Department’s spending at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club and the Turnberry resort in Scotland.

Earlier that year, Mr. Engel joined other Democratic leaders in calling for a formal impeachment inquiry into Mr. Trump.

Engel believed Trump committed obstruction of justice because the late Robert Mueller was leading an investigation into allegations of foreign fraud in the U.S. election.

“The American people want the truth and have a right to know it,” he said in a statement.

Engel clashed with Trump multiple times during his first term in the White House, including criticizing the administration’s withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty in 2020 and proposing cuts to the international affairs budget and other measures in 2021.

On the eve of President Trump’s first address to Congress in 2017, Engel told ABC News that he did not intend to shake the first-term president’s hand that night.

“I have deep respect for the Presidency and will attend the joint session, but the respect between the branches must be mutual,” Engel said.

“This goes beyond ideological and political differences,” he continued. “The president needs to work with all the people, so today I will listen to what he says, but I will not greet him or shake his hand,” he said.

Engel is remembered as a “fervent advocate and true public servant”

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said in a statement Friday that the county was “deeply saddened” by his death and remembered him as a “passionate advocate” at home and abroad, a “defender of human rights” and “a tireless public servant who dedicated more than 30 years to representing the people of New York State.” Jenkins said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Engel a “true public servant” and “a dear friend of mine dating back to when we first met as district leaders in the Bronx.”

“Mr. Elliott was rarely the loudest person in the room, but he knew how to do the hard work of legislation. He led the Foreign Affairs Committee with a rare blend of conviction, competence, and kindness that cemented him as one of the great foreign policy leaders of the 21st century,” Schumer said in a statement. “His work to defend democracy and protect the human rights of millions of people around the world will leave a lasting mark on the world.”

Schumer praised his work on affordable housing, expanding health care access, improving maternity care and “fighting for sensible gun control.”

“He was my friend and partner in public service. I mourn with his family and his wonderful wife Pat, who was always his fiercest champion. I will miss him greatly.”

Representative George Latimer, who now represents Mr. Engel’s former 16th District in New York, issued a statement Friday afternoon recalling his dedication to public service as a teacher and in elected office in Albany and Washington.

Mr. Latimer mentioned Mr. Engel’s work that helped bring peace to the Balkans in the 1990s.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a Facebook post Friday that he was “deeply saddened” to hear of Engel’s death and that Engel had worked closely with the congressman on issues close to his heart.

“His dedication and leadership will not be forgotten,” he said.

Who are the greatest self-made Americans? Forbes lists the top 250.

TV presenter, actress, writer Philanthropist Oprah Winfrey is America’s greatest self-made individual, according to Forbes magazine. this year.

In addition to its annual World’s Richest List, which highlights the world’s wealthiest people, in April Forbes magazine released a list of the 250 Greatest Self-made Americans, highlighting those who have demonstrated “grit, hard work, and resilience” throughout their careers. Those on the list were ranked by distance traveled, distinguishing between those who started with nothing and those who got off to a great start.

“Born to a teenage mother, Winfrey grew up on a farm in rural Mississippi without indoor plumbing. She was raped by her cousin at age 9, and at 14 she gave birth to a son who died soon after,” Forbes’ description of Winfrey reads. “Thanks to a federal program, she attended a school in an affluent suburb where she discovered a knack for public speaking and debate, which helped her land a part-time radio job and then a scholarship to Tennessee State University. In 1984, she took over a struggling Chicago morning talk show and eventually built it into a national media brand.”

The top five names following Winfrey are oil and gas industrialist Harold Hamm, World Wide Technology founder David Stewart, Interactive Brokers CEO Thomas Peterffy and basketball superstar LeBron James.

Here are the top 50 people who made Forbes’ list of Greatest Self-made Americans.

86% of the best self-made Americans are billionaires. 92% are men.

Only seven of the top 50 people on the list are not billionaires: Dolly Parton (7th), Bill Clinton (8th), J.D. Vance (10th), Clarence Thomas (16th), Sonia Sotomayor (19th), Yvon Chouinard (34th), and Omar M. Yagi (48th).

And only four of the top 50 are women: Oprah Winfrey (No. 1), Dolly Parton (No. 7), Diane Hendricks (No. 9), and Sonia Sotomayor (No. 19).

How did Forbes magazine choose the “Greatest Self-made Americans”?

First, Forbes editors scoured the magazine’s 109-year-old archives for “classic stories of entrepreneurial capitalism.” Then, asking Beat reporters for ideas, the magazine asked for further feedback on AI, specifically ChatGPT and Gemini.

According to Forbes, several judges reviewed the names: Kauffman Foundation CEO DeAngela Burns-Wallace, Innovaron founder Keith Dunleavy, former Forbes publisher Rich Karlgaard, New Mountain Capital founder and CEO Stephen Krinsky, Block co-founder Jim McKelvey, and Nextrudder Ventures CEO Ryan Rippel.

Each individual was then ranked on a score from 1 to 10. Only individuals in 9th or 10th place were eligible to compete.

“While we focused on billionaires ranging from penniless to millionaire, we also included pioneering scientists, Supreme Court justices, and others whose ‘wealth’ is measured in clout and influence, not just dollar signs,” Forbes wrote in a post announcing the list.

Economists say that although the two countries have agreed to a two-week ceasefire, it could take months for gasoline prices to return to pre-war levels.

A bill sponsored by Ossoff would require local approval for new ICE facilities.

play

Sen. Jon Ossoff, who is running for re-election in a high-profile race in Georgia this year, joined four other senators in sponsoring a new bill that would limit what the Department of Homeland Security can do with new ICE facilities.

The Respect for Communities Act was introduced in the Senate by Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, and co-sponsored by Democratic Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego of Arizona, and Ossoff.

Georgia was to have an Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility in Oakwood, as well as one of eight planned “megacenters” in the country to hold up to 10,000 people in social circles. Both projects have faced outrage from the community, with officials in both regions of the state saying they have had little or no contact with DHS, despite relying heavily on the infrastructure.

The program is currently on pause as new Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin reviews the policies and programs of her predecessor, Kristi Noem, who was ousted from the job after a controversial Congressional Oversight Hearing.

What is the Community Respect Act?

S.3894, the Respect for Communities Act, would require towns and cities to be included in decisions to purchase land and develop new properties for ICE operations, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security.

The bill would “prohibit[DHS]from constructing, acquiring, or operating a new treatment plant or detention center without providing a mechanism for public comment regarding such activity, entering into a signed written agreement with appropriate state and local officials, and providing prior notice to Congress of such activity.”

Communities will have 30 days for public comment, and the federal government will be required to provide information regarding the “scope of construction, acquisition, renovation, and operation” of the facility.

City officials from Oakwood and Social Circle say this is the kind of information local communities want from DHS right now, and where they are being held back.

Ossoff is supported by local leaders in Georgia.

“For months, the Social Circle community has unequivocally opposed the current administration’s proposed ICE detention facility, and local leaders have warned of the risk that the facility would overwhelm the city’s infrastructure,” Ossoff said in a statement. “But despite clear local opposition, this administration’s plans and intentions have been shrouded in secrecy with no local input. This bill would require the federal government to obtain local consent before building such facilities.”

The bill does not prevent new facilities from being built, but it does limit where they can be built by requiring local support.

“Our community remains strongly opposed to ICE’s proposed detention facilities, which threaten to overwhelm our infrastructure and more than triple our population. ICE and DHS’s failure to communicate with us about these plans has further exacerbated the situation and caused months of chaos,” the statement said. “We are grateful to Senator Ossoff for his continued opposition to this project and support for this federal legislation that ensures our communities have a voice in this process and cannot be ignored.”

Ossoff’s fellow Georgia state senator, Raphael Warnock, visited social circles earlier this year and echoed what city officials were sharing in town. He also sought to close the center through amendments to the federal funding bill.

In late March, Mr. Ossoff and Mr. Warnock jointly signed a letter to Mr. Mullin and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, demanding answers to questions about infrastructure raised by social circle officials. The deadline for responses was April 7, but senators have not said whether they have received a response.

Jimmy Kimmel criticizes Melania Trump’s Epstein speech as ‘quite a plot twist’

0

play

Jimmy Kimmel is giving his take on why Melania Trump suddenly addressed her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein on Thursday, April 9th.

During a monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the comedian questioned the timing of the first lady’s press conference, which came days after President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and the United States.

“He spent the last six weeks blowing this Epstein story off the headlines. Two days after the ceasefire, she put this Epstein story back on top again,” Kimmel said.

“She must really hate him. I don’t know how else to explain it,” he added.

Kimmel is known as a critic of the president, criticizing President Trump’s response to the Iran war. The late-night host earlier this week slammed President Trump’s threat to kill “an entire civilization” in Iran.

Melania Trump denounced what she called “lies” and “false slander” about her relationship with Epstein at a press conference on April 9, adding that she was not friends with the convicted sex offender and had no knowledge of his crimes.

‘Big surprise’: Jimmy Kimmel addresses Melania Trump’s comments about Epstein

Kimmel called Melania Trump’s speech a “huge surprise” and joked that she “emerged from the rubble of the East Tower” to deliver her comments about Epstein.

“She brushed off the drywall of her business suit and lazily issued a prepared statement telling people to stop talking about things no one else was talking about,” Kimmel said.

Kimmel also responded to Melania Trump’s claim that “numerous false images and statements about Epstein and me have been calculated on social media over the years.”

The host addressed allegations of sexual contact between President Trump and adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

“This is the same speech he gave her after Stormy Daniels. She’s just regurgitating it,” Kimmel said. “But the bigger question is, what kind of images are calculating around social media? What is she saying? And I don’t see any images at all.”

Melania’s outfit sends a message. She’s a victim, but not Epstein’s victim

0

play

WASHINGTON – When Melania Trump entered the Cross Hall of the White House to deliver a statement denying her relationship with the late convicted Jeffrey Epstein and denouncing “fake images” of herself, she wore a gray double-breasted Prada skirt suit.

It was the same outfit she wore during an event in the Rose Garden last May when she co-signed the Take It Down Act, a law aimed at protecting victims of deepfakes and revenge porn. (The first lady’s office confirmed to USA TODAY that it was the same suit.)

The implicit message from this intentional dresser? It was a reminder of the day she co-signed the legislation she spearheaded to stop online harassment and intimidation.

On April 9, the first lady took to the podium and demanded an immediate end to the “lies” linking her to Epstein.

“Many false images and statements about Epstein and me have been circulating on social media for years,” she said. “Be careful what you believe. These images and stories are completely false.”

She went on to characterize her social interactions with Epstein. She said they belonged to “overlapping social circles” and, in a stunning statement lasting just under six minutes, declared that she was not a “victim of Epstein.”

If her choice of clothing was meant to convey a message, she may not be a victim of Epstein, but she is clearly a victim of social media.

Former models’ fashion choices are often highly scrutinized and considered iconic, sparking conversations online.

Case in point: A $39 green Zara jacket that read “You really don’t care, do you?” printed on the back of the jacket he wore during a visit to a migrant children detention center in Texas in June 2018 caused an uproar. And she wore a fuchsia ribboned blouse to the second presidential debate in 2016, leading to speculation that it was a reference to a recently leaked tape containing lewd comments by her husband.

Her movie Melania, released earlier this year, further reinforced the idea that she is meticulous about her fashion choices and public image.

“Artificial intelligence and social media are the next generation of digital candy, sweet and addictive, designed to influence the development of children’s connections,” she said at the signing of the Take It Down Act. “But unlike sugar, these new technologies can be weaponized to form beliefs, which sadly can affect emotions and even be deadly.”

Earlier this week, less than a year after the Take It Down Act was passed, a Columbus, Ohio, man pleaded guilty to cyber crimes involving real and AI-generated sexually explicit images and threats of violence against multiple victims.

“Today, the first conviction was handed down under the Take It Down Act, which protects victims from AI-generated non-consensual sexually explicit images, cyberstalking, and threats of violence,” the first lady wrote to X.

Three days later, she claimed to be someone who knows what it’s like to be the victim of a smear campaign.

“My attorneys and I have successfully fought these baseless lies and will continue to maintain my sound reputation without hesitation,” she said.

Kamala Harris considering running for president again in 2028

0

Asked on April 10 if she was considering running for president in 2028, Harris replied, “Maybe, maybe,” adding, “I’m thinking about it.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has said she may run for president again after losing the 2024 election to President Donald Trump.

Asked on April 10 during an event in New York City whether she was considering running for president in 2028, Harris said, “Listen, I might, I might,” adding, “I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about it.”

Harris made the comment during a debate with the Rev. Al Sharpton at the National Action Network convention, where several prominent Democrats considered potential 2028 candidates spoke.

Looking ahead to a presidential bid, Harris cited her experience as vice president, spending hours in the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room and “knowing what the job is and what it requires.”

“One thing I’m really clear about is that the status quo is not working and hasn’t been working for many people for a long time,” she added.

At the beginning of her remarks, the crowd chanted, “Run again! Run again!” When Harris mentioned the election.

Harris, a former California attorney general and state senator, first ran for president in 2020, but her campaign failed to gain momentum and she withdrew before votes were cast in the Democratic primary. She then endorsed Joe Biden, who selected her as his running mate.

Harris served as vice president for four years and emerged as the Democratic presidential candidate in 2024 when Biden dropped out of the race. Trump handily defeated her, controlling every battleground state and popular vote.

Due to Biden’s delay in withdrawing from the race, Harris’ campaign lasted just 107 days. After her defeat, she withdrew to write a campaign memoir titled “107 Days,” and then embarked on a 15-city book tour.

Meanwhile, the 2028 Democratic presidential primary election is slowly taking shape as various candidates take on the challenge. Sharpton’s National Action Network Conference brings emerging races into the light. In addition to Harris, other potential 2028 candidates have also met with civil rights groups, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Mr. Harris shared his thoughts on leadership with Mr. Sharpton.

“The American people have a right to expect that anyone who wants to run for president and be a leader should not make it about themselves, but what they want about themselves,” Harris told Sharpton, adding that’s how she thinks about a potential presidential campaign.

“We’ll keep you posted!” she added.

Mike Pence supports Indiana Senate candidate, breaks with Trump

0

play

Former Vice President Mike Pence has spoken out in the Indiana Senate race, putting him at odds again with his former boss, President Donald Trump.

Mr. Pence is backing incumbent Sen. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) for re-election, and he faces competition from Mr. Trump-backed candidate Tracy Powell. This is one of eight state Senate races in which President Trump endorsed newcomers last year in retaliation for his decision to vote against a mid-decade redistricting push.

“I have known State Sen. Jim Buck for many years serving Indiana from the statehouse to the White House, and have always found him to be a man of integrity and one of Indiana’s most conservative state legislators,” Pence said in an April 10 statement.

Pence called Buck a “devout Christian” and a “principled conservative” who has always supported anti-abortion causes, tax cuts, gun rights and balanced budgets.

Buck has held the seat comfortably without a primary since 2008. Prior to that, Mr. Buck served as a state representative since 1994.

On the May 5 vote, he will face Powell, a chiropractor who has served as a Tipton County commissioner since 2020 and is a member of the Indiana County Commissioners Association.

Trump’s involvement in these low-level campaigns has catapulted the campaign onto the national stage, attracting millions of dollars in investment from outside groups like Turning Point Action and the Club for Growth. Other influential figures, including former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and now Mr. Pence, have rallied to the other side and defended the incumbent.

While Mr. Daniels was and still is unequivocally opposed to redistricting, Mr. Pence has not made his position on it clear, saying only publicly that he believes the decision should be left to each state.

Buck told IndyStar that he does not believe the latest endorsement represents a change in that position. Buck said Pence simply called and asked if there was anything he could do to help. The two knew each other before Pence was elected to any public office.

“That support was not accompanied by a yes or no vote (on redistricting),” Buck said. “He just knows me.”

“Friends stay together and friends know each other,” he added. “I’m just tickled that he chose to participate.”

Sonic boom expected in California as Artemis returns home Friday

0

play

As the Orion capsule traverses the atmosphere on its return to Earth on April 10, a sonic boom will mark the end of the record-setting Artemis II spaceflight, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The USGS wrote in a post to

The boom may be heard across Southern California as four astronauts complete a 10-day voyage to orbit the moon, traveling farther into space than anyone in history, according to the USGS.

The spacecraft is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California shortly after 8 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Pacific Time), NASA said.

What is a sonic boom?

According to the U.S. Air Force, sonic booms are caused by objects moving faster than sound (about 750 miles per hour at sea level).

The noise often resembles thunder.

According to the federal agency, “An aircraft flying through the atmosphere continuously generates pressure waves similar to the water waves caused by the bow of a ship.” “When the aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, these pressure waves combine to form a shock wave that travels forward from the point of origin or ‘point of release.'”

The USGS is asking anyone who hears a sonic boom to report it here or visit https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/tellus.

How did First Lady Melania Trump and Donald Trump meet? She says it wasn’t Epstein’s fault.

0

play

  • First lady Melania Trump has vehemently denied any friendship with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
  • She said she met Donald Trump at a Fashion Week party in 1998, not through Epstein.
  • Melania Trump has previously threatened to sue people who say Epstein introduced her to her husband.

First lady Melania Trump made a sudden announcement on April 9, vehemently denying her friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“The lies linking me to the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” she said at the White House. “Those who lie about me lack ethical standards, humility and respect.”

She referred to Epstein’s email responses to his ex-girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, calling it “casual correspondence.” She also called on Congress to give Epstein survivors the opportunity to testify publicly, saying “all women should be able to tell their stories in public if they choose.”

The first lady has not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein. But others say Epstein introduced President Donald Trump to Melania Trump. She denies this and has threatened lawsuits against people like Hunter Biden who have said it publicly.

So how did the couple meet? She says:

How did First Lady Melania Trump and Donald Trump meet?

First Lady Melania Trump mentioned how she met her now-husband in her 2024 memoir, “Melania.”

It says the following:

Chapter 5: “Hello, I’m Donald Trump.”

On a Friday night in September 1998, as I settled into my comfortable New York apartment after a whirlwind trip to Paris, the phone rang. That was my friend.

“My boyfriend is having a party at the Kit Kat Club tomorrow night,” she said. “Please come. It’s been a while since we met.”

“I just got back from Paris,” I said.

“Please, it’s going to be fun. There’s going to be a lot of people coming. I’ll go pick them up.”

I was tired and jet-lagged, but I loved the idea of spending the weekend with friends.

I have always been selective about how I spend my time and where I put my energy. Late night partying at a club wasn’t the top choice on a Saturday night. I much preferred staying at home and watching movies or going out to dinner with close friends. I never avoided social gatherings, but clubbing was never my thing.

I accepted the invitation anyway. It was Fashion Week, after all, and the era of glamor and sophistication. I was actually looking forward to interacting with industry insiders and trendsetters.

When I stepped into the sleek black limousine in which my friend arrived, I felt like a celebrity on the way to a gala. When we arrived at the Kit Kat Club, we were greeted by the energy of the crowd and the bright lights. Inside, the dark and crowded space was buzzing with models, photographers, editors, and designers on this Saturday night of fashion week. I sat at a table in the VIP section on the second floor, and there was an atmosphere of sophisticated camaraderie. Some people danced, others had lively conversations, and we all had a great time.

I could see my friend waving to someone behind me. I turned around and noticed a man and an attractive blonde woman approaching me.

“Hello, I’m Donald Trump,” the man said as he sat down at my table. “Nice to meet you.” I recognized the name and knew he was a businessman or famous, but I didn’t know much else. He held out his hand and shook mine.

“Hello,” I answered. “I’m Melania.”

His eyes were filled with curiosity and interest, and he took the opportunity to sit down next to me and strike up a conversation. He asked me about my time in New York, my home in Slovenia, and my travels around the world. It was a moment of connection and a brief encounter that left a lasting impression. I’m glad I made new acquaintances.

He was such a great date that I initially dismissed our conversation as just chatter at an industry event. The music was loud and the crowd was loud, making it difficult to truly connect with anyone.

From the moment we started our conversation, I was captivated by his charm and easygoing personality. Although there was a lot of buzzing activity around us, his focus on our interactions made me feel like I was the center of his world. It was a refreshing break from the usual superficial small talk, and I found myself drawn to his magnetism.

In her April 9 speech, she also said that she first met Mr. Epstein in 2000 at an event she attended with Mr. Trump.

Hunter Biden, one of the targets of legal threats over another intro story

In August, Melania Trump threatened to sue Hunter Biden for more than $1 billion unless he retracted claims made in an interview on YouTube’s Channel 5 that Epstein introduced Donald and Melania. “Hmm, that’s it. That’s not going to happen,” Biden said in a follow-up video.

Following the first lady’s comments, Biden said he would participate in a cage fight with Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump if it was hosted by filmmaker and Channel 5 content creator Andrew Callahan.

Other news outlets and creators who reported that Epstein introduced the couple were also notified by Trump’s lawyers and issued apologies and retractions as a result.

In the interview that sparked the legal threat, Biden named Michael Wolff, author of several of Trump’s books. Wolf himself was threatened with legal action when he discussed Epstein’s relationship with the Trumps. But Wolff sued Melania Trump in October, claiming her threat to sue was intended to intimidate Trump into silence.

Court records show Melania Trump has moved to dismiss the lawsuit, with one filing calling the charges “frivolous.”

A lawyer representing Mr. Wolf in the lawsuit did not respond to a request for comment on the first lady’s recent appearances.

Why is First Lady Melania speaking about Epstein now?

The first lady’s remarks were surprising since she rarely speaks in public. But also, while the controversy surrounding Epstein has dogged the Trump administration for months, public discussion about it has subsided since the Justice Department announced earlier this year that it had completed the release of files mandated by the Epstein File Transparency Act.

Mark Beckman, a senior Trump adviser, said the first lady “speaks out now because enough is enough.”

Beckman added: “The lies must stop. It’s time for the public and the media to take note of her incredible accomplishments as First Lady.”

The president said in an interview with MS NOW that he did not know this statement would be made.
