Emilia Clarke is ready to dispel ‘Game of Thrones’ rumors.
In an interview with Variety, actor Daenerys Targaryen, 39, denied claims about how much she was paid to appear on the Emmy Award-winning HBO show. Reports said she and the rest of the cast were paid $300,000 per episode, but Clark said this was not accurate. In fact, she suggested the number was not even close to that.
“We weren’t making that much money,” she told Variety. “Can you imagine? I would have driven a few Porsches.”
Deadline reported in 2014 that Clarke, along with co-stars Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, were paid “nearly $300,000 per episode.” The outlet said that by 2017, the stars’ salaries will increase, with the seventh and eighth seasons being paid “more than $500,000 per episode.” The final two seasons consisted of seven and six episodes, respectively.
Clarke appeared on Game of Thrones from 2011 to 2019 as the fiery Daenerys Targaryen, who works with dragons to seize the Iron Throne of Westeros. She was nominated for an Emmy Award four times for this show, but never won. Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister, was the only member of the show’s cast to win an Emmy for his role.
In an interview with Variety magazine, Clark admitted that he was devastated after missing out on his last Emmy Award in 2019. That same year, Jodie Comer won the award for her role in “Killing Eve.”
“I’m embarrassed to admit that not winning the Emmy was a really big deal,” she told the outlet, adding that it made everyone feel like “Game of Thrones is over, it’s old news.” Clark said she skipped the Emmy afterparty and went straight home because she was upset about losing, but when she woke up the next morning she was embarrassed and vowed to “never behave like that again.”
But Clark could be back in the Emmy race this year for her performance in the Peacock show “Ponies,” about a CIA operative paired with Haley Lu Richardson. The series first aired in January, but has not yet been renewed for a second season.
Meanwhile, the “Thrones” universe continues to expand, with prequel series “House of the Dragon” scheduled to return for season 3 on June 21st.
