Curtis Sliwa said he is interested in running for mayor again.
If he succeeds, this will be his third time running for mayor. The Guardian Angels founder has become a bit of an eccentric New York celebrity, from his red beret to his love of animals (he once owned 17 cats at one time).
Here’s what he had to say about the 2029 race and how the past two campaigns went.
Will Curtis Sliwa run for mayor of New York again?
When asked, Sliwa expressed interest in running for re-election as mayor.
“I sincerely hope that I can run for mayor of New York again against Zoran Mamdani and the other candidates,” he told the New York Post.
“Obviously, we’re still in the early stages of the process, but if someone were to ask me, ‘Are there any chances I’d run again?’ Absolutely.” What would stop me from running? ”
Mr. Sliwa, 72, used the same reasoning as in other campaigns as to why he is qualified for the role: his background as a New Yorker.
“I don’t think anyone knows more about New York City than you, about its subways and streets, its public safety, its quality of life, its homeless population, and its uncared for mentally ill people.”
Past campaigns run by Sliwa
Sliwa participated in the 2021 mayoral race for the first time and won the Republican nomination. He faced Eric Adams, the borough president and former police officer.
Although Sliwa lost the election at the time, he received around 28% of the vote, with more than 310,000 individual votes in his favor.
But he wasn’t done yet. Last year, Sliwa ran again and once again won the Republican nomination. This time, voters were far less interested in Mr. Sliwa because the race was so close between current Mayor Zoran Mamdani and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Indeed, many, including President Donald Trump, have called on voters not to support Sliwa to defeat Mamdani. But he refused.
“I can’t believe I dropped out,” he recently told the New York Post. “Let the people decide.”
This time, Sliwa received just 7% of the votes, or just over 150,000 votes.
Sliwa will be 75 years old when the 2029 mayoral election is decided.
