Brise Norton: Pro-Palestinian activists break into the UK’s largest air force base in major security violations

Palestinian pro-activists broke into Britain’s largest air force base and damaged two military aircraft in central England early on Friday.

Palestinian Action, a UK-based group aimed at disrupting the operations of arms manufacturers supplying the Israeli government, has posted footage of the action on its X account.

The video shows two people riding electric scooters at the tarmac at Rough Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Activists can be seen spraying red paint on the turbine engines of the two Airbus Voyager. They are said to be used to refuel military and fighter jets in Israel, the US and the UK, as well as their suspect role in carrying military cargo.

“The UK is not merely a joint venture, but is actively involved in Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East,” a spokesperson for Palestinian actions said in a statement.

“By abolishing the two military aircraft, Palestinian actions intervened directly in the genocide and prevented crimes against the Palestinians,” he added.

A source from the Ministry of Defense told CNN that RAF Voyagers had not carried anything to Israeli forces or refueled Israeli aircraft.

The incident raises broader questions about how un-arrested activists were able to enter without being detected by the carrier. RAF Brize Norton has around 5,800 service personnel, 300 private staff and 1,200 contractors.

In a statement, the Department of Defense strongly condemned “the vandalism of Royal Air Force assets” and said it was working with police investigating the violation.

In a statement posted to X, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer called the incident “vulnerability” and called it “disgrace.”

Even if you haven’t seen it recently, you know your “chin”

Hello! I’m Brian Truitt, USA TODAY film critic and the guy behind the Watch Party newsletter. With Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” turning 50, it’s a big weekend for movie lovers. From the infamous John Williams two-note musical theme to several girly shark attacks, it continues decades later. We look at its killer fish flick, “Jaws” legacy in our rankings of shark movies, and delve into all the overviews of our best summer blockbuster since 1975. Here’s why he didn’t overcome “Jaws.”

Should we go to war with Iran or support Israel from afar?

President Donald Trump said there will be a “substantial opportunity” for US negotiations with Iran and that within two weeks it will decide whether to keep the US out of the ongoing Israeli-Iran conflict.

The possibility of us being involved is the growing debate between elected leaders and American voters. Some Republicans want limited involvement in the escalating conflict. Meanwhile, the elected leaders of both parties hope to stop the all-out war.

Dodger Stadium is the flash point for ice cream

The Dodgers in Los Angeles say immigrants and customs enforcement agents have been denied entry to the stadium premises. Meanwhile, Ice says the agency is “never there,” and the Department of Homeland Security claims that masked agents were with customs and border patrols. The Dodgers were to announce “plans to support the immigrant community,” but club president Stan Kasten said the organization would delay the announcement after federal agents appeared. A boiling conflict arises when protesters appeared at Dodger Stadium on Thursday to condemn the Dodgers’ silence amid immigrant raids and unrest in Los Angeles.

Mega Rocket explodes another SpaceX retreat

What the company called “a massive anomaly,” SpaceX’s spaceship exploded late Wednesday, shooting giant fireballs and giant wreckage into the Texas night sky. The explosion is not SpaceX’s first, but comes right after a series of setbacks this year with a 400-foot rocket system. Founder Elon Musk said no danger has been raised to residents of the community surrounding Brownsville via social media, and initial inspections say it is “first for this design.” The final explosion of the spaceship was over a month ago.

The longest day of 2025 is here

Summer hasn’t officially started yet. According to the National Weather Service, the summer solstice occurs on Friday at 10:42pm (10:42pm ET), marking the longest and shortest nights of 2025. Meanwhile, the southern hemisphere is winter on the winter solstice. During the summer solstice, the slope brings the northernmost tip of the Earth closer to the sun, bringing more sunlight. Bliss itself only lasts a moment, but is widely celebrated at festivals.

Dodger Stadium is a flashpoint for ICE protest after rejecting federal entry

play

LOS ANGELES – In a simmering dispute, the Los Angeles Dodgers say immigrants and customs enforcement agents have been denied entry to the stadium grounds – Ice says the agency “never is there” and the Department of Homeland Security claims masked agents are customs and border patrols.

Who’s here without a doubt: One of many people gathering outside the stadium for hours before the Dodgers face the San Diego Padres on June 19th.

Aguilar, a lifelong Dodgers fan who says he was born and raised in Los Angeles, stood near a corner intersection near Dodger Stadium five hours before the team’s game. And three hours before the Dodgers’ silence triggered a scheduled protest amidst the attack and anxiety of immigrants in Los Angeles.

“Please at least make a statement,” said Aguilar, 72, from his home about two miles from the stadium.

Aguilar held the sign saying “Dodger Boo” instead of “Dodger Blue” and rang out as many drivers passed.

Aguilar said he was old enough to remember when Latinos were kicked out of the Chavez Valley area in the 1950s to give way to the construction of a crucial Dodger Stadium to seduce his team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

“I still love them, but I say something,” Aguilar said. “Especially this day in June. We are standing on the shoulders of Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez.”

But even if the driver rings in clear support of Aguilar’s message, he said, “Whether (the team) says something or not, people will still be fans of the Dodgers.”

He was included.

LOS ANGELES – About 100 protesters outside Dodger Stadium disrupt traffic before the team’s game, urging more than 20 police officers to head to the scene.

At one point, protesters spread electric scooters at an intersection near the entrance and temporarily stopped traffic. Police closed the gates and redirected traffic to another entrance, but they tried to control the situation.

There were several tense standoffs between protesters and police officers, but no known arrests were found at 8pm.

Meanwhile, protesters maintained their chants, including “boycotting the Dodgers.”

The Dodgers’ silence over the Los Angeles protest was a protest sparked by an immigrant raid that burned crowds on Thursday night.

“If the Dodgers can’t say anything, I think we can,” Dodgers fan Amanda Carrera, 31, told USA Today Sports.

The police officers calmly removed the scooter and seemed untroubled by the chant. But things got even more nervous when some people remained on the crosswalk.

“I’ll get out of the street and move,” cried the officer. The protesters leaned over the officer and cried out, but at that moment it didn’t escalate any further.

By 7:50 points, protests outside Dodger Stadium had dropped to about two dozen.

But not everyone in the crowd was a fan of those trying to block traffic.

“Such protesters ruin the cause,” Carrera said. “It’s the people who cause problems.”

LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers were supposed to announce a “plan to support the immigrant community,” but club president Stan Kasten said the organization will delay the announcement after federal agents appear.

“For today’s event, we continue to work with the groups involved in the program,” Kasten said in a statement, according to the Los Angeles Times. “But we need to delay today’s announcement while solidifying the details.”

Amanda Carrera said she was the singer who wrote the song called “Dodger Girl,” but arrived with a sign saying she was “prideful to be a Latina.”

“As much more I love my people than I love the Dodgers,” Carrera (31) said.

Graffiti artists left the organization clearly targeting the perception of silence, in protests with messages such as “stop,” “LA is our home,” and “silence is the issue,” leaving them close to the ballpark that they were clearly targeting the organization.

The time leading up to the game was a fan of Dodger Stadium holding a megaphone.

One masked protester outside the stadium held signs of reading “Kiké Forever” with reference to the longtime Dodgers utility man who became the first active player to oppose immigrant raids in Instagram posts in both English and Spanish.

“I may have been born and raised, but the city adopted me as one of their own. I am saddened and angry about what is going on in our country and in our city. The fans of Los Angeles and the Dodger welcomed me, supported me, showed nothing but kindness and love,” Hernandez wrote.

“This is my second home. And we can’t see our community being violated, profiled, abused and torn apart. All people deserve respect, dignity and human rights.

Hernández won World Series titles in 2020 and 2024, spending nine seasons with the Dodgers in two stints.

Lionel Messi: A bigger player than the club…and the FIFA Club World Cup tournament?

0

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
CNN

There are worn-out cliches in soccer. No player is bigger than the club.

At Thursday’s newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup in Atlanta, the event was still in its early stages, with the old proverb being thrown to the side and replaced by questions about the 31,783 lips present. Can players be bigger than tournaments?

The football star in question was, of course, a particular Lionel Andres Messi, who the public made a pilgrimage for worship as Intermiami faced Portuguese Giants FC Porto in the second match of Group A.

But until the magical Messi moment of the 54th minute, the match was at risk of becoming mere sideshows for the 37-year-olds who have long cemented their status as one of the greats of the sport, and for supporters expressing their admiration. Let’s face it. Argentina, who has won almost everything from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and is the World Cup champion, does not accurately harm his claim.

Prior to kickoff outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, it was clear how Messi’s pull didn’t know the limits, or rather the miles. While Atlanta supporters were present, CNN Sports spoke with families in Louisiana, Alabama, Washington, DC, Buffalo, Puerto Rico and Dublin, Ireland.

They said that when one fan “We’re here for football!” inside, the roar from the rather sparse crowd resembles the environment along the sold-out stadium when Messi was introduced 30 minutes before kickoff.

It raised some notches when he went out to a fulfilling house again, just as FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently said the tournament would “provide 63 Super Bowls in a month,” as players made individual entrances to the field, and so on.

At kickoff there was apparently every ball touch from the eight Ballon d’Or winners, and the sound from the stands ranged from “OOH’s” to whistle, “Me-Ssi!” Reciting the most popular ones. Given that the Barca legend turned 38 on Tuesday, it was surprisingly adjacent that the crowd didn’t serenade Argentina in the “Happy Birthday” chorus.

The match was a slow burner, but it exploded in the second half. Intermiami scored the goal on the break courtesy of an early penalty from Porto’s Sam Ageho.

After the spot kick was converted, Messi’s response from near the center circle was to not move the muscles for 10 seconds in a way that suggested “this was not a plan.” Perhaps then it was Porto who hadn’t planned an InterMiami quick response.

Messi looked a bit troubling when Porto went up 1-0 early in the first half.

Just two minutes into the second half, Terrace Cosegovia’s smart finish levelled the score past goalkeeper Claudio Ramos, and after seven minutes Messi stepped up. In every respect.

The Argentine star free-kicked the edge of the box that won, taking the crowd to the edge of the seat. A sense of inevitability hangs down into the air as the Maestro marked his territory and found the exact angle to place a whipshot on the corner of the net. I had to feel Ramos unable to put the gloves on either strike.

We have been treated so often over the years, so the goal was to be beautiful. Portuguese defender Jose Fonte praises Messi on Dazen’s broadcast. Stunner was the first time that not only the winner of the match, but a team in the CONCACAF region has defeated the European side with a competitive fixture.

It was Messi’s 50th goal for the team. Not too crude for a Thursday afternoon in mid-June. Points in the final group game with Palmeiras in Brazilian outfits next Monday will guarantee Inter Miami’s position in the knockout phase.

As you get through the noise, you wonder what the power in FIFA makes it all. The Governing Body of Sports essentially quickly followed InterMiami, who was essentially fast tracked in a 32-team tournament, not because they won the MLS Cup, but rather the regular season Supporters Shield, which may have a trophy but may ultimately be the path to the postseason.

Messi and Miami were shockedly bounced last year in three best playoff series by teams. This turns out to be playable at Atlanta United, this stunning 70,000 capacity stadium. However, the Seattle Sounders and LAFC completed the conditions for the three MLS side of the Club World Cup, placing the galaxy outside and stared enviously at all those brightest stars.

And he attracted the crowd here on Thursday thanks to Messi’s left foot becoming one of the tournament’s first signing moments as the Club World Cup finally found his foot, and the reality remains that last Saturday the opening game of the tournament attracted over 60,000 fans at Messi’s American-based Hard Rock Stadium.

Messi's goal was to throw back the Barcelona genius.

Intermiami is a relatively new MLS franchise with co-owner David Beckham. David Beckham may have felt sympathy for his former club, the LA Galaxy, but he has not been invited to a FIFA party.

Club World Cup – Whether it will be held every four years, Slightly The FIFA World Cup, which has been established since he turns 96 next summer, will allow him to grow taller. Here and now, only Messi and Messi are in the minds of those lucky enough to see him take action. And it expands to players as well.

When CNN Sports talks with Messi’s teammate Fafa Picoll after a match, the three words that Winger associates with the football superstar are, “leader, winner, winner again,” and then “it’s not sometimes said just through words and physical actions.

And on Thursday, Lionel Messi’s actions spoke much more eloquent than words.

What is the 20% rule for buying a car, and why do drivers follow it?

0

When it comes to car loans, capital can save you thousands of people on interest costs.

play

  • In 2025, new cars reached record numbers.
  • While average monthly car payments are also increasing, you can use the “20% rule” to reduce your payments.
  • Auto loan interest costs thousands of dollars to car buyers, depending on the structure of the funding transaction.

Buying a car is one of the biggest purchases that many Americans make in their lives. According to the Kelley Blue Book, the new car prices are record highs, with average prices creeping up to nearly $50,000 in 2025.

If you are purchasing a new car in 2025, choosing the right funding strategy can have a significant impact on ownership experience and monthly payments. What is the “20% rule”? Also, how can you use it to your advantage when purchasing a dream car, truck or SUV?

What is the 20% rule for car loans?

Thousands of drivers will fund new cars in 2025. The way you build a funding plan affects stocks in your new vehicle and monthly, annual and total payments, including interest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjs4ufvkjla

A 20% minimum down payment can make the car buyer’s long-term financing transactions cheaper. According to Chase Bank, the down payment “reduces major loan amounts and interest you are likely to pay.”

Suppose you are funding the new 2025 Toyota RAV4. If you secure a 60-month (5-year) funding loan at a 4.99% interest rate, your monthly payments could drop by 20% to $440 a month (before taxes, fees and interest). The 2025 RAV4 20% down payment ($29,2590 before taxes and fees) is $5,850. This leaves 80% of the SUV’s MSRP principal ($23,400 in taxes, fees, interest).

Your monthly payment divides your principal loan amount by your loan period (60 months in the example above) and the monthly interest cost of the principal (4.99% in the example above). Drivers can save thousands of interest payments by saving at least 20% of the total interest costs as a down payment for expenses over time.

How to reduce interest costs on car loans

If you can save even more money with a car loan and manage your monthly payments after a 20% down payment, there is a way to pay the full cost of financing your car before the loan term ends. That being said, there may be costs associated with paying your car loan early, which can negatively affect your credit score.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pozbxk87cag

If you pay the monthly loan amount and make an additional payment to your principal, you can repay the vehicle before the end of the loan term. This will reduce the amount of total interest you pay through funding, but can have unintended consequences depending on the lender.

Ultimately, the best way to guarantee that you save money on interest when funding your vehicle is to allow for the maximum down payment and gain more equity for your vehicle. The “20% Rule” is a strategy implemented to reduce the total cost of financing a vehicle, but it allows you to adjust your funding agreement to suit your individual financial needs and goals.

What is the average monthly car payment?

According to consumer credit reporting firm Experian, the average car loan payment was “$675 as of the first quarter of 2025.” According to Nerdwallet, the average annual interest rate for individuals with a credit score of 661-780 is 6.70%. Interest rates for drivers with low credit scores (13.22% with a 501-600 score) increase significantly.

Between rising new car prices and high interest rates, raising new cars is more expensive than ever. Before purchasing a new car, truck or SUV, the driver should:

  • Evaluate the amounts that the true cost of a new vehicle can include taxes, fees and interest
  • Calculate your exact monthly car loan payments and see if it fits within your budget
  • Think about how a high percentage of down payment can reduce your total funding expenditure

Brand new cars may be fun to own and drive, but used cars offer plenty of value for more affordable prices, so they are rarely needed. Thanks to depreciation, American drivers can find large deals on used car models that cost thousands of more than new ones. So if you’re in the market for new cars in 2025, be sure to check the numbers three times before making any financial commitments.

Xi and Putin have a veiled message for Trump on the united front over Israeli-Iran’s crisis

Hong Kong
CNN

China and Russia position themselves as voices of reason and are considering the US entering the country in search of disputes. These are Optical XI xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin who tried to make predictions during the call on Thursday.

As US President Donald Trump joined Israel in attacking Iran, the rapidly challenging conflict between two sworn-up enemies in the Middle East presented another opportunity to cast himself in Beijing and Moscow as an alternative to American power.

In their appeal, Putin and Xi Jinping strongly condemn Israel’s actions, calling them a violation of the UN Charter and other norms of international law, according to the Kremlin. (Of course, the elephant in the room is a violation of Russia’s own international law in the ongoing war against Ukraine, which Beijing has consistently refused to condemn it.)

In Beijing’s reading, Xi hit a more measured tone and stopped explicitly denounce Israel, unlike the foreign minister who did it in a call with his Iranian counterpart last week.

Instead, Chinese leaders urged “Israel in particular” to political parties fighting to stop the fire as soon as possible, in order to avoid further escalation and regional ripples.

And in particular, in a veiled message to Trump, Xi stressed that “major powers” that have a special impact on the parties to the conflict should work to “cool the situation, not opposed.”

Beijing has long accused Washington of being a source of instability and tension in the Middle East. And some Chinese scholars have accused them of stealing Iran’s crisis to emphasize that point.

Li Zhongmin, a Middle Eastern expert at Shanghai International Studies University, said the latest flare-up stems from the uncertainty created by the chaotic, opportunistic and transactional nature of Trump’s second presidency and his Middle Eastern policy.

“(Trump) seriously undermined the power and credibility of US policy in the Middle East, undermining its ability to threaten and block regional enemies while eroding American leadership and image among its allies,” Liu wrote in state media this week.

Some Chinese online commentators have noted that Trump appears on the brink of pulling the US deeper into other so-called eternal wars in the Middle East.

At the beginning of his second term, officials close to Trump repeatedly stressed the need for Washington to redirect the focus and resources to counter China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. But five months later, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza continue to be furious. And Trump is now squeezing our involvement in the Israeli-Iran conflict.

Beijing is not interested in seeing an all-out war with Iran, which could overthrow the regime. Under the Supreme Leader of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran emerged as a horrifying force in the Middle East and as a key counterweight to US rule.

In 2023, Beijing helped mediate a surprising settlement between Saudi Arabia and Iranian archrivals.

China has long supported Iran through sustained oil imports and UN Security Council seats. In recent years, the two countries have deepened their strategic ties, holding joint navy exercises with Russia. Beijing welcomed Tehran to Shanghai cooperative organizations and BRICS. It was led to challenge the US-led world order led by China and Russia.

Iran is also a key node of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a driving force behind global infrastructure and investment. The country is located near the strategic port of Gwadar, Pakistan’s main BRI pre-post base that provides access to the Indian Ocean, and borders the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for China’s oil imports from the Persian Gulf.

Like Russia, China has offered to become a potential mediator in the Israeli-Iran conflict, casting an alternative to its role as a peace broker and US leadership.

During his call with Putin, Xi laid out four broad proposals to dismantle tensions, including solving Iran’s nuclear issue and protecting civilians, according to Chinese reading.

Meanwhile, Xi’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi spent a busy week on the phone, speaking with counterparts in Iran, Israel, Egypt and Oman with gusts of diplomatic outreach.

However, it remains unclear what Beijing willingly can do when it comes to actually mediating a conflict. In the early stages of Israel’s war with Gaza, China made similar offers and sent special envoys to the region to promote peace negotiations. This is an effort that was ultimately hard to get in terms of concrete results.

Broker peace in the Middle East is highly orderly, especially in deeply divided regions that lack the existence of meaningful political or security, especially for countries with little experience or expertise in mediating long-term, cumbersome conflicts.

And the war in Ukraine, one conflict where China holds important leverage, XI provided diplomatic cover and much needed economic support to maintain Putin’s war effort, even if China continued to acquire its position as a neutral peace broker.

Yet, when America’s global leadership is under scrutiny, especially in the eyes of the global South, Iran’s position as a voice of restraint in the conflict could already count as a symbolic victory for Beijing.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Trump administration are in conflict over the existence of federal agents at Dodger Stadium

0

Los Angeles
CNN

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the federal government are in conflict with what happened Thursday when federal agents were on or near Dodger Stadium property.

Reports began to spread about federal agents in stadiums outside downtown Los Angeles, sparking concerns that Trump administration’s immigrant crackdown had come to the World Series champions’ home hours before the game against the San Diego Padres. Protesters rushed to the area and began chanting anti-US Immigration Customs (ICE) slogans with federal agents.

The Dodgers then posted to X that ice had come to the stadium and requested access to the property.

“This morning, the ice agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lot. They were denied entry to the organization’s basis. Tonight’s game will be played on schedule,” the team said in a post on X.

But soon after that post, the Department of Homeland Security said the agents at Dodger Stadium were not from the ice, and their presence had nothing to do with the immigrant crackdown that confused Los Angeles.

According to CBP officials who claim there are no operations related to the MLB club, the US customs and border security vehicles are located in a nearby parking lot, one of which had a malfunction in the car they stayed in for a long time.

In the Los Angeles area, CBP agents are influx of CBP agents shortly after protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda. To respond to these protests, the Department of Homeland Security has spiked agency staffing in areas, including border agents, many of which remain in the area.

“This had nothing to do with the Dodgers. The CBP vehicles were in very short time in stadium parking lots that were not related to any operation or execution,” Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Dodger Stadium is located in a relatively isolated area within the population of major metropolitan cities. The stadium is located in Los Angeles’ Elysian Park area and is retreating from the main road by bending an access drive to an acre of car park surrounding the stadium. It is unclear exactly what parking lot the federal agents were in when the vehicle malfunctioned. There is a large parking lot on the stadium site, and there is a parking lot used by overflow and stadium employees when the site is filled.

The video shown by Affiliate KABC showed federal agents stationed on one of the streets leading to the stadium. CNN contacted Ice for comments.

The fierce reactions from the Dodgers, the public and federal government exemplify the tensions that are now holding on to the Los Angeles area as the administration’s immigration crackdown protests against ice and protests against the Dodgers, protesting against the Dodgers in support of largely Latinx fans.

The Dodgers will announce plans later Thursday to support immigrant communities affected by recent immigration operations.

The team is scheduled to play the San Diego Padres in Los Angeles on Thursday, and will host a celebrity softball game hosted by star player Mookie Betts to celebrate Black Heritage Night. The Dodgers have averaged over 50,000 fans per home game this season. This is the only team in the majors that brings more fans per game. The home game against the Padres on Thursday could be a hot ticket as the two teams are rivals in the National League West Division.

The federal action comes days after singer Neza, whose full name Vanessa Hernandez played the US national anthem in Spanish on Saturday. She had initially planned to sing the national anthem in Spanglish, but in an ongoing migrant raid she decided to sing in Spanish only.

She says an employee on the team told her not to do so. It didn’t discourage her and played the song in Spanish anyway.

Her performance came on the same day protesters filled streets across the country for “no Kings” protests, and Los Angeles’ frustration continued due to the ice attacks that have occurred within the past few weeks.

The team has not spoken outwardly about the ongoing frustrations of the ongoing immigration crackdown occurring in the city, but star-player dodger player Quique Hernandez, a Puerto Rican native, showed support for Los Angeles in an Instagram post.

“I am saddened and angry about what is going on in our country and in our city,” Hernandez said in part. “Fans in Los Angeles and the Dodger welcomed me, supported me, showed me nothing but kindness and love.”

“This is my second home, and I can’t see our community being violated, profiled, abused and torn,” he said, adding, “All people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights.”

70 rhinos raised on controversial South African breeding farms free in Rwanda

It is not easy to transport the world’s second largest land mammals along the way along the world’s second largest continent.

However, on a 3,400-kilometer (2,100-mile) journey involved in crates, cranes, trucks and Boeing 747s, 70 raised, bred southern white rhinoceros from South Africa to Rwanda’s Akagera National Park in early June moved as part of an initiative to “rebel” them.

“Transporting 70 rhinos across the continent is risky,” Martin Rickelton, head of the translocation in African parks, told CNN. So far, the animals seem to be doing well in their new homes. “All reports are good,” adds Rickelton.

Creatures that can weigh more than 2,000 kilograms (over 4,000 pounds) come from a controversial breeding programme launched in the 1990s by property developer John Hume.

After spending years lobbying to legalize the rhino horn trade, Hume was obtained by accumulating horn stockpiles and trimming the animals without harming them.

However, he ran out of money and he sold rhinos in 2023 as horn trade is still banned under international law. He told Agence France-Presse (AFP) when he spent about $150 million on the project. “There’s nothing left except 2,000 rhinos and 8,000 hectares (20,000 acres) of land.”

He did not receive a single bid. African parks — a conservation nonprofit that manages 23 protected areas across the continent — intervened to acquire private symes in plans to “rebuild” animals for over a decade.

The translocation marked the first transcontinental movement of the Sai Reno Wild Initiative in Africa Park.

“This is a very important milestone,” says Taylor Tench, a senior wildlife policy analyst at a nonprofit environmental research agency who was not involved in the relocation. “This is definitely a major development in terms of the efforts of African parks.”

Today, around 17,000 South Whitesides remain in Africa, which are classified as “blackmailed” International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list. This means 2,000 southern white rhinoceros purchased by African parks, and plans to spread across the continent account for more than 10% of the remaining population.

Although international trade in Rihhorn has been prohibited since 1977 under the International Trade Treaty of Endangered Species species (citation), demand from Asian consumers has mistakenly promoted it as a status symbol or cured diseases ranging from hangovers to cancer, it still promotes poaching.

Rhinos are blindfolded before being crated for transport.

Poachers sometimes killed rhinos completely, sedate them before cutting their horns, or hacked most of the animal’s face to death to cause them to bleed.

In South Africa, where the majority of its population lives, 420 rhinos were poached in 2024. Over 100 people have been killed in the first three months of the year.

Tench says that Rhino poaching has been ramping on the continent from 2012 to 2015, and “many things have been achieved since then.” He added that Kenya lost rhinos last year, causing a significant drop in poaching in Zimbabwe. Today, he says poaching is mainly concentrated in South Africa and Namibia.

To address this issue, Tench says it needs to focus more government resources on addressing the organized criminal network behind Rhino’s poaching and international trade and increasing international cooperation.

Rickelton says there are many future relocation projects at various stages of discussion and planning. He added that there is a strong framework in place to ensure that the rhinoceros are available in place to provide adequate habitat, safety to keep the animals safe, and sufficient funding to care for them.

Rhino Crates are carefully offloaded from the aircraft upon arrival in Rwanda.

The move to Akagera National Park required more than half of the planning and approval. And the cost of moving each rhinoceros, including monitoring and management for the next three years, is around $50,000 (the move was supported by the Howard G. Buffet Foundation).

The animals were first moved from the breeding program facility to the South African private game reserve Muniwana Conservancy and were exposed to conditions like red-headed gulp. The rhinos were then loaded into individual steel boxes, driven to an airport in Durban, South Africa, and carefully loaded onto a Boeing 747 by crane.

After arriving in Kigali, Rwanda, Sai made the final leg of the journey on the road. Now, rhinoceros need to adapt to their new environment. They will be monitored by the veterinarian team for several weeks.

The fleet carrying the crated rhinoceros heads for Red Gela National Park after landing in Rwanda.

According to the park, measures like dog units to reduce poaching were guided to reduce poaching, reducing poaching to “near zero” levels.

There is a reason for optimism. In 2021, the African park moved 30 rhinos from a private gaming sanctuary in South Africa to the Red Fillet. Since then they have had 11 descendants. 70 more rhinos have been added, and “We have now established a genetically viable flock of Rhino,” says Rickelton.

He sees the rhinos from their crate at the end of the journey and says, “The effort, frustration and challenge are really worth it.” Rickelton adds: “It’s a story of hope in a less positive world.”

Analysis: European diplomats welcome two weeks of breath to “exploring what is possible” in Iran’s nuclear program

Geneva, Switzerland
CNN

European negotiators welcome President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will decide on US military action in Iran within two weeks, and have told CNN it could provide “breathing space” and “diplomacy windows” to bring Iran back to the negotiation table.

Prior to nuclear talks between top Europeans in Geneva, Switzerland and Iranian officials, Western European diplomats told CNN that “ideas” would be presented to Iran, “we will explore what is possible and there is room for manipulation.”

The diplomat refused to be drawn to the details, but the core of the issue remains Iran’s controversial uranium enrichment programme, repeatedly focusing on “what compromises are feasible” on the issue.

But the enrichment that Iran says it needs for peaceful purposes is a major fixture in that it produces a large amount of weapon-grade materials, but the agreement with Iran is pledging to swear that the state must ban it from fully enriching nuclear material.

For decades, Iran, which refused to build nuclear weapons, has resolutely refused to give up its capabilities. Instead, they will narrow down billions of dollars to refine their technology and build a huge number of enrichment facilities, including installing secret fordows built underground in the mountains.

Israel pointed to a recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency after it launched its first strike in Iran. This acknowledges that Iran enriches uranium at a higher level than other countries without a nuclear weapons program, and violates its nuclear shortage obligation.

But after more than a week of intensive Israeli airstrikes that saw Iran lose most of its enrichment programmes, the Islamic Republic’s hard-line calculations could ultimately change, a Western European diplomat told CNN.

“Now that Iran is under enormous military pressure, it may have no choice and their nuclear capabilities are degraded,” the diplomat said.

Until Trump’s decision to allow diplomacy to another shot, Geneva’s story appears to be a European sideshow, with the US poised to participate with Israel in the destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The meeting between the EU’s foreign policy directors, together with foreign ministers in the UK, France and Germany and Iranian counterparts, has taken over greater importance, setting the stage for the next step and acting perhaps as a bridge between Iran and the US.

But there is a fundamental fear in Geneva that the talks of revitalization here, the first formal meeting with Iranian representatives since the escalation of the Israeli-Iran conflict, are yet to go anywhere.

Even Trump’s two-week window announcement, Western European diplomats told CNN, but while the US military was assembled and ready for the “big gambling” of the military “which could inflam the area”; Western European diplomats told CNN.

“It’s impossible to read anything Trump says.

Live Update: Israeli-Iran conflict, ballistic missile attacks, Trump weighs our involvement

0

Life is full of uncertainty after days of aggressive strikes between Israel and Iran for civilians caught up in the Israeli bombing campaign.

“This is war,” Tehran, the 58-year-old father of two in the capital, told CNN, adding, “No one really understands what that means.”

A week after the conflict, contact with the outside world for Iranians is difficult, hampered by sporadic internet and telephone coverage. Some – usually wealthy activists – have access to StarLink terminals, which provide independent internet access.

Speaking through audio recordings, messages and occasional phone calls, all interviewed asked CNN not to reveal their full name for fear of retaliation from Iranian authorities.

Life has discovered a new wartime rhythm, they said, local shops are still open, but some are accepting credit payments, the two’s fathers told CNN. This credit, which cannot withdraw money from Iran’s Sepa Bank, has become a lifeline.

“We have electricity, but gasoline is useless for us, so we have nowhere to go outside of Tehran,” he said.

He glued to television after seeing London-based Iranian broadcasters illegal and said his family had not left their home recently.

“Daily life is full of constant fear and distrust,” he said.

Posted in Tehran, he was able to visit Karaj’s family over the weekend, but military rules in the capital prohibit him from using his mobile phone or other devices. “We can’t even check the news,” he said.

Trump can maintain control of the California State Guard, court rules

0

play

The US Court of Appeals will advance a lawsuit in which Donald Trump maintains control of the California State Guard, and the state’s Democratic governor challenges the legality of Republican presidents’ use of the military to quell protests and anxiety in Los Angeles.

A three-judicator panel on June 19 of the San Francisco-based U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals extended the suspension placed on June 12 by US District Judge Charles Breyer, who said Trump had illegally called on the National Guard to federal service.

Breyer’s ruling was issued in a lawsuit against Trump’s actions brought on by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Breyer found Trump violated US laws governing the president’s ability to control the state’s National Guard by failing to coordinate with the governor, and found that there were no conditions set forth to allow this move, such as a rebellion against federal authorities.

Breyer ordered Trump to return control of the California National Guard to Newsom. Hours after Breyer acted, the Ninth Circuit panel temporarily put the judge’s move on hold.

Amid protests and confusion over Trump’s immigration attack in Los Angeles, the president ruled the California State Guard on June 7th, deploying a troop of 4,000 people against Newsom’s wishes. Trump also ordered 700 US Marines to the city after sending out the National Guard. Breyer has not yet ruled on the legality of Marine Corps mobilization.

At a court hearing earlier this week, members of the Ninth Circuit asked California and Trump administration lawyers what role the court should have in considering Trump’s power to deploy the military.

The law sets out three conditions that allow the president to federate the state’s national guard, including the “risk of rebellion or rebellion” against the government.

The Justice Department said that if the president finds there is an emergency that justifies the use of the National Guard, the court or the governor cannot consider the decision.

Trump’s decision to send troops to Los Angeles prompted national debate about the use of troops in US soil and inflaming political tensions in the second most popular US city.

The protests in Los Angeles lasted more than a week, but then declined, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lifted the curfew she imposed.

In a June 9 lawsuit, California alleged that Trump had violated the state’s sovereignty and US laws, banning federal forces from participating in civilian law enforcement.

The lawsuit said the situation in Los Angeles is not something like a “rebellion.” The protests involved sporadic acts of violence that national and local law enforcement could handle without military involvement, according to the lawsuit.

The Trump administration denied that the military is engaged in law enforcement and instead said it was protecting federal buildings and personnel, including US immigrants and customs enforcement officials.

The Ninth Circuit consists of two judges appointed by Trump during his first term, and former Democratic president Joe Biden appointees.

Donald Trump appears to be slamming the June celebration

0

play

President Donald Trump appears to be criticizing the June celebration in a social media post, saying “There are too many non-operating holidays in the US.”

“It costs billions of dollars to close all of these businesses,” Trump said on June 19.

The President did not specifically name the holidays in his post.

June was ordered free of charge after the last black Confederate slaves arrived in Galveston, Texas, to commemorate the events of June 19, 1865.

It has long been celebrated by black Americans, but became prominent in the nation in 2020 amid protests against racial inequality. In 2021, the federal public holidays were officially recognized by then-President Joe Biden.

The costs Trump mentioned in his post were not immediately clear. Private companies are not forced to close on federal holidays, and many are not.

Most national banks, federal offices, and the US Postal Service were closed in honor of June. However, major retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Target and Starbucks were open during their holidays.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt was asked by a reporter earlier in the day whether Trump is expected to commemorate June.

“I’m not tracking his signature today,” she replied. “I know this is a federal holiday.”

Trump previously honored June, including his first term as president. But Trump sparked controversy in 2020 after scheduling his first rally since the Covid-19 lockdown in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He later changed the date of the event.

Celebrating in June nationwide: See photos

It’s the day when the promise of freedom finally became true to more Americans. Junior was celebrated with joy and determination throughout America in 2025.

play

On Thursday, June 19th, Americans celebrated the federal holiday to commemorate the day the last group of enslaved African Americans was informed of freedom.

This day, known as June, reflects on the moment when the promise of freedom first enshrined in the Declaration of Independence became a reality for more citizens.

In 2021, then president Joe Biden Signed the National Independence Day Act in June. It has officially been named a Holiday, which has been celebrated for a long time by black people and has since been celebrated with dances, parades, ceremonies and historical reenactments.

Holiday indicates the date of 1865. More than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Declaration, Major General Gordongranger and 2,000 Union troops came to Galveston Bay, Texas, to declare the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved blacks in the state.

This year’s celebrations were held nationwide, and history lessons remained important as ever.

June in Illinois

The city of Peoria in central Illinois celebrated the day with parades, poetry and picnics. The area festival also featured food, music performances, and bake-offs.

More than 1,000 miles northeast of Warchester, Massachusetts, YWCA hosts a June celebration, flag-raised ceremony and vows to live on tradition and history, reported Worcester Telegram & Gazette, part of the USA Today Network.

“We’re not here to celebrate,” said Sha-Asia Medina, a volunteer with the Black Heritage Committee in the area. “This is something that we recognize and respect our ancestors, but our attacks on history and culture continue. This June is especially important given the time we are in.”

There are other photos of Americans celebrating relatively new holidays in the United States in cities such as Atlanta, New York and Savannah.

For film lovers who grew up in a period of blockbusters, no filmmaker is more iconic than Steven Spielberg.

And there are no more iconic big hits than the ones that started them. Spielberg’s “Jaws” is an infamous shark film that celebrates its 50th anniversary. (Original release: June 20, 1975.

Spielberg, 78, has done it all in his legendary Hollywood career. But it’s easy to forget how deep his films can become.

His resume includes classic films such as “The Third Type of Close Encounter”, “The List of Schindlers” and the first two films in “Jurassic Park,” and the Indiana Jones franchise. And Spielberg is still breaking the fresh ground. His 2022 drama, The Fabelmans, made his own childhood fictional in an age-like way.

To mark “Jaws,” at age 50, we celebrate Spielberg’s vast films by ranking all of his feature films.

34. ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (1997)

The sequel is a poor genetic clone of the first “Jurassic Park.” There are many giant dinosaurs around, but dinosaurs and humans are made up of weak traits, obscure action scenes, and a lack of original spirit.

33. “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Fate” (1984)

The “Anything Goes” opening on Shanghai Set is fantastic. Unfortunately, everything else in this unfortunate adventure, from annoying love interests to sidekick clogs, is a minicart that’s off the rails.

32. “War of the Worlds” (2005)

Maybe it’s the answer to a more benevolent alien early in his career? Spielberg puts his own spin on the HG Wells invasion classic with Tom Cruise for a ride, bringing mediocre results.

31. “The Kingdom of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” (2008)

Thea LaBeouf, Aliens, and Immortal Fridges aren’t the biggest additions to the indie franchise, but Karen Allen’s franchise return and Cate Blanchett’s debut as an evil Soviet villain make up for them.

30. “Terminal” (2004)

Tom Hanks is pretty best about Eastern European men stuck at JFK airport in New York thanks to a civil war where passports are disabled.

29. ‘The BFG’ (2016)

Spielberg is a little too safe with the oversized story of an orphan girl and her very big best friend. But it is the perfect introduction to his work for the little ones who are entertained by flatulent corgis and illustrious giants.

28. “AI Artificial Intelligence” (2001)

Stanley Kubrick was originally supposed to be directing, but it would have produced a film that was quite different from the warm story of Spielberg, a robotic child with the ability to love.

27. “Sugar Land Express” (1974)

Goldie Horn shines in one of her first dramatic roles in the story of two criminals who lure police officers to the extreme length and get the boy back.

26. “Hook” (1991)

Spielberg’s films tend to be horny at times, and this is the pinnacle of its peak, a sugary good-meaning take from the Peter Pan myth with Robin Williams as a boy who never really grew up.

twenty five. ‘Always’ (1989)

It immerses him in emotionally manipulative romance, but Flick gets the point to have Audrey Hepburn in her final film role as an angel. Spirit greets the fire pilot, which must help the deceased Fireboy.

twenty four. “Amistad” (1997)

It may not be Spielberg’s best “important” film, but it is definitely an effective film to convey the historical significance of the Africans who took over a slave ship headed for America around 1839 and the subsequent legal battle.

twenty three. “Duel” (1971)

Before raiding Spielberg’s film debut (premiered as a TV film but also got a theatrical release), he offered the track as its main antagonist before raiding the Dyno and the hungry shark. And the road rage is obvious and knuckle wrenching, as the travelling salesman escapes the road and prevents him from being killed by the big rig drivers of vengeance.

twenty two. ‘Ready Player One’ (2018)

It’s a bit strange to see Spielberg directing a homage to his entire nerd shoot. Still, youthful rebellion in virtual reality looks great, and the concept of online escape resonates in an increasingly intense real world.

twenty one. “Munich” (2005)

Talks about the Israeli government’s secret revenge against the athlete’s massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, and one of the darkest moments in the world of sports is the moving thriller spin.

20. “Warhorse” (2011)

The filmmakers go to all the fuzzies that all fuzzies feel on the epic canvas, this WWI boy and his horse, their parallel stories, and on a long road to finding each other again.

19. ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ (2011)

Animated efforts with Peter Jackson give a serious Indiana Jones vibe with a young French journalist and his loyal dog friends in a hunt for a treasure-filled sunken ship.

18. “If you can, I’ll catch me” (2002)

The real cat and mouse tracking of the 1960s has been done with a teenage con man (Leonardo DiCaprio) and a dog FBI agent (Hanks) with a jazzy John Williams score.

17. “Minority Report” (2002)

The futuristic neo-noir science fiction featuring cruises has grown as much as possible, notable, as technology has made a huge leap around us, about filming Nehru Well about law enforcement before doing anything illegal.

16. “The Bridge of Spies” (2015)

The filmmaker puts you directly into the chilly Spicraft of the Cold War, but it’s the chemistry between Hanks and Mark Rylance (as a serious lawyer and his secret Russian client) that promotes drama.

15. ‘The Fabelmans’ (2022)

This is a portrait of the 1960s youth as an icon, and Gabriel Label plays a talented teen who loves to make films but is facing trouble at home along with his parents (Paul Dano and Michelle Williams) and anti-Semitic bully.

14. ‘1941’ (1979)

Spielberg’s purest comedy didn’t get the best reception, but the World War II flick is a cheerful, star-studded wonder about the paranoid La citizens who plunge into panic after Pearl Harbor, worried about Japan’s attacks.

13. “Empire of the Sun” (1987)

Nearly 20 years before he became Batman, Christian Bale was a gorgeous British youth living in China, separated from his parents and became a Japanese concentration camp in World War II in an emotional epic.

12. ‘Lincoln’ (2012)

Daniel Day Lewis transforms into the 16th President in one of his most memorable roles, with Spielberg astonishingly watching the later period of the Civil War, which makes and destroys a country.

11. “The Post” (2017)

The Pentagon paper drama is a spiritual prequel to “All President’s Men,” a love letter to journalism, and a great cast of convenedness, including Ben Bradley, editor of the Washington Post, where Hanks is hard-charged. In modern landscapes where the media struggles to survive, Spielberg gathers to celebrate what makes it wonderful.

10. “West Side Story” (2021)

It takes several major Chatspas to tackle the screen for the first time at a classic Broadway show since its Oscar-winning adaptation in 1961. But it leaves it to Spielberg to tell the love story of Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) in a fresh and relevant way.

9. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998)

One of the greatest war films of all time, period. Spielberg’s excellent view of Normandy’s invasion was groundbreaking in his graphic depiction of the battlefield, particularly due to the fierce knockout of the opening. The landing at Omaha Beach shows genocide and confusion from the perspective of the Army Ranger Captain (Hanks), stumbling in surprise at the bloody water, causing the audience to feel awful terrifying.

8.

An inventive film for kids in the 80s shoots the heart and jerk tears, shedding tears with the story of a super cute alien and a young man who keeps him safe from the authorities and cares for him when he gets sick. Just as important as ET, his friendship with Elliot (Henry Thomas), a marginalized boy who desperately needs connections after his parents’ divorce. ET wants to go home, but Elliot has to rediscover his own too.

7. “Third Type of Intimate Encounter” (1977)

The more grown complement of ET puts a mysterious and thoughtful spin on the initial contact with the aliens and the idea that we are just a small part of all the big puzzles. When visitors come, it’s not spoken language, but a musical theme that bridges the intergalactic gap between us and them, and Richard Dreyfus’ blue-collar workers are all dreamers who wanted to see the sky and see the stars. Spielberg’s vision is sentimental, but I feel very satisfied.

6. “Jurassic Park” (1993)

The dinosaurs were already cool, but in Spielberg’s hands, they are epic sights and scary antagonists in the film about not messing around with Mother Nature. Filmmakers take on the complex of corporate greed and human gods by imagining a genetically cloned reptile theme park, but at a more popcorn-chewed level, Spielberg creates both a terrifying journey and a breathtaking collection of species.

5. ‘The Color Purple’ (1985)

Exceptional performances (particularly Hoopy Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey) promote this tragic, intimate narrative of this painful, intimate woman of an abused, but strong woman who finds voices and identity in Georgia in the early 20th century. Goldberg’s Cerry is the mean wife of a man she is one of the oppressed men and the mean wife of a nasty farmer (Danny Glover) who has protected her from her family and real life, and she sounds a catharsis that she finds in the end surprisingly meaningful.

4. “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusades” (1989)

Three Quell is rarely as good as the first, but this both of these quests for acquisition of this Holy Grail cums as a surprisingly deep story about fathers, sons and mortality. All the usual fun indie is here – the Nazis, precious artifacts – is the bantelling chemistry between Ford’s Hard Luck hero and Sean Connery, as his slump-like dad is epic. Bogie and Bacall have nothing in these two.

3. “Jaws” (1975)

It really takes something special to influence the American public. They are rethinking their beach trips. With its sinister two notes, John Williams theme and the infamous killer shark, the film was a summer hit, breaking many nerves with water-bound horror. He also exploits the man-stop natural dynamics as a modern-day Moby Dick, along with Robert Shaw’s Quint, as Robert Shaw’s Quint is closely tied to his great white nemesis.

2. “Schindler’s List” (1993)

Spielberg’s dramatic black and white masterpiece is the beautiful and brutal look of the Holocaust, an unlikely hero who cannot find hope and kindness in the face of pure evil. The character arc of German businessman Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) is amazing from hiring Jewish workers, as it is cheap to give large sums of money to save hundreds of people from a particular destiny. Through his eyes we see hatred, fear, and innocence that has lost its time in history.

1. “The Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)

With a lot of Nazi punches and world-shaking religious meanings, the first Indiana Jones film is the perfect action adventure. In fact, it wraps around your face. It makes smart heroes cool forever (in everything from “X-Files” to “Iron Man”), providing the love interest of someone as good as Indy, and as interesting as it is persuasive – sorry, “Star Wars” gives us a Ford signature movie icon. It’s a film that reminds us all of the reasons why we love films.

Potential 2028 Democrats will move away from Supreme Court’s Transcare ruling

This week, the Supreme Court’s conservative judicial justice supported Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for young people, prompting immediate criticism from liberal colleagues.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor wrote in dissent, “The court will abandon transgender children and their families on a political whim.”

However, one group on the left has been quiet since the verdict sent shockwaves. Democratic leaders across the country were attracting attention as the White House’s 2028 choice potential.

The lack of response to the 6-3 ruling underscores what some political observers called the party’s continued tensions about how they would address issues that became pivotal in the 2024 election. It also shows how well the topic is fulfilled during the midterm of 2026, which determines the control of Parliament.

President Donald Trump has campaigned heavily on the promise of banning young people’s gender-affirming care and preventing trans athletes from competing. And since the start of the second term, he has taken several enforcement actions affecting transgender Americans.

Here’s what you need to know about how a prominent Democrat responded to the Supreme Court decision:

what happened?

The decision, which said it would prevent minors from using adolescent blockers and hormonal therapy, did not violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, but was quickly criticized by liberal and progressive groups like the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group.

The court’s ruling comes after Trump and Republicans made trans rights a key part of the final week of their 2024 campaign.

“Kamala supports taxpayer-funded sexual change for prisoners,” one of Trump’s campaign ads allegedly about then-President Kamala Harris. “Kamala is for them/they. President Trump is for you.”

According to multiple reports last year, some Democrats called for ads among the most effective campaigns. And in recent months, some Democrats have been working to separate the party from elements of transgender rights efforts. For example, California Gov. Gavin Newsom made the headline in March when he proposed that transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports was “deeply unfair” and admitted that the campaign ads were “devastating.”

Since taking office in January, Trump has signed an executive order to ban trans athletes from girls and girls’ sports, ending federal assistance to affirm gender, preventing trans people from openly serving the military. Trump also returned to his office on his first day and signed an order declaring that the government only recognizes two genders: male and female.

The governor is quiet

California newspapers, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Maryland Governor Wes Moore looked at key candidates to run for president in 2028, but they all quietly after the Supreme Court decision this week.

The closest to the party’s potential 2028 candidates is Illinois’ Governor J.B. Pretzker, who has a transgender cousin and wrote on X, previously known as Twitter, but Illinois has protections that “meet at this moment.”

“In an age of overreach and increased rhetoric, it is more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community,” he added. “You always have a house here.”

Ranks and files

Several members of Congress made statements, but the response among Capitol Hill Democrats was largely quiet.

New York Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer has denounced the Senate floor decision as part of a “cruel crusade against trans-Americans.” On social media, he called it a distraction from issues that affect all people, regardless of gender identity.

His counterpart at his home, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, did not mention it in news releases or social media.

Sen. Ed Markey of D-Massachusetts pointed out in a statement that 24 other states have similar laws that hinder gender affirming care for transgender youth.

“Hate has won today,” he said. The Supreme Court’s conservative justice “supported hatred and discrimination by bringing victory to Republicans who have been ruthlessly and cruelly attacking transgender Americans for years.”

“Another time, politicians and judges are inserting into the exam room,” said D-Delaware, the country’s first openly trans council member, on X, previously known as Twitter, on Wednesday. “This ruling undermines the physicians who provide care to some of our country’s most vulnerable patients.”

SpaceX rocket exploded at night. Is Musk’s 2026 Mars ambitions even more out of reach?

0

(CNN) – The explosion of a SpaceX Starship vehicle during regular ground testing on Wednesday sent a shockwave of fire and smoke that appeared to engulf the company’s testing facility in Starbase, Texas. Mishap has questioned the company’s ability to hash the key design and engineering challenges of vehicles that are considered important to SpaceX’s founding goal of ultimately transporting a fleet of people to Mars.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk spoke to a South Texas employee in late May, aiming to once again support Mars’ ambitions, he highlighted the metrics that measure success.

Later in his speech – Musk gave two days after the recently released Starship Prototype failed at re-entry. The roadmap rests on certain deadlines determined by laws of physics, thanks to how far Earth is from the red planet.

The distance between Earth and Mars ranges from approximately 35 million to 250 million miles (56 million to 400 million kilometers) depending on where each planet is in its orbital path around the Sun. To save time and fuel costs, the mission aimed at visiting Red Planet will have to wait until it is an ideal point compared to Earth. This is a major alignment opportunity, also known as the “Martian moving window,” which occurs approximately every 26 months over a few weeks.

The next window, where travel time to Mars will be reduced from over a year to just six to nine months, will be coming into the second half of 2026. The Musk’s roadmap suggests SpaceX wants to send up to five non-white partial spacecraft cars loaded with cargo on Mars in the meantime. However, there are some major concerns SpaceX needs to address before its first cargo ship is set up on Red Planet, and Wednesday’s explosion (the fourth Starship so far this year) may be evidence of that.

Musk spoke about the possibility of reaching Mars in 2026, and said during his speech in May that he imagined that “50/50 Chance” could win a spacecraft spacecraft on Mars next year.

Before the 2026 Mars Movement Window opens, SpaceX will be debuting another upgraded version of Starship Spacecraft and Super Heavy Rocket Booster.

With the new spacecraft system, both the first stage booster and upper stage ship are slightly larger, allowing together to carry 661,387 pounds (300 metric tons) of propellant.

SpaceX Starship Rocket will be released on May 27th on the 9th wec-cut test flight from Star Base, Texas.

This is a substantial upgrade similar to one SpaceX version 2, which debuted earlier this year, adding 25% propellant capacity compared to previous test flight models.

SpaceX is struggling to run version 2 as expected. The first two test flights, which took place in January and March, each failed minutes after takeoff, causing rain to fall near a population-based island in eastern Florida.

The final test flight in May flew further during the flight, but the spacecraft lost control before re-entrying, leading to a nailed, uncontrolled descent into the Indian Ocean.

And Wednesday’s explosion during routine ground testing raises even more concerns about how long SpaceX will take to fine-tune Starship designs and ensure that cargo and humans can safely transport. The company has not disclosed how much of a set-up it will be for the vehicle or its launch facilities.

Preliminary data suggested that the explosion was caused by the detonated gas tank, Musk said in a social media post. The tank “has fallen below proof pressure,” he said. That is, they suggested that previous stress tests and known characteristics of tanks should have survived the scenario. This is a potentially unique problem that has never been observed before.

During his speech on May 29, Musk emphasized that introducing more upgrades and further increasing the size of the spacecraft is essential for long-term success.

“It requires three major iterations of key new technologies. To make it work really well,” Musk told employees during the spacecraft update.

Musk said he hopes the updated spaceship will make its flight debut by the end of the year.

However, even if the new version pulls out an untouched test flight along the same suborbital pathway that SpaceX conducted its previous Starship test mission, it does not guarantee that the vehicle is ready for an interplanetary excursion.

That’s because even with the added fuel capacity, the spacecraft must be rounded out with more propellant after reaching space for a long trip to Mars.

SpaceX plans to do this by firing a series of tankers, or a spacecraft vehicle designed to carry batches of fuel and oxidant. These tankers are idle in Earth’s orbit, simmering along with the spacecraft, moving thousands of pounds of propellant, supplying the vehicle with the fuel it needs to continue its deeper journey through the solar system.

In particular, it has never been done before to move fuel between two vehicles in space.

“We’ve never done that. Nobody did it — autonomously transferring fuel from one spacecraft to another,” said Bruce Jakoski, professor emeritus of geology at the University of Colorado Boulder University Research Institute for Atmospheric and Astrophysics.

“That’s difficult,” Jakoski added, taking into account that oxygen and methane are essentially kept at temperature, especially considering spacecraft vehicles running on estuary fuel. Also, in orbital microgravity environments, the fuel may float in a tank rather than settling in one location. So, amid countless other technical difficulties, SpaceX probably needs to devise a pump or motor that can effectively inject fuel from one vessel to another.

At present, it is not even clear how many tankers SpaceX needs to fire to provide enough gas to one spacecraft vehicle for a trip to Mars. (Previous estimates NASA staff and third-party experts predicted that around a dozen spacecraft tankers could be needed for a lunar mission.)

In his speech, Musk said he believes that fuel transfer within the space is “technically feasible.”

SpaceX will not attempt to conduct its first tanker flight test by next year, Musk added.

Even after SpaceX sorts out the issue of propellant transfer, they will face another important technical question: How will Starship survive a trip to the surface of Mars?

Musk was called the issue “one of the hardest problems to solve last month.”

“It’s extremely difficult to do that because no one has really developed a reusable orbital heat shield,” he said. “This will be something we’ve been working on for several years to continue honing.”

Vehicles that need to safely land on the planet’s body while traveling at orbital speed require a component called a heat shield. This is a special coating on the outside of the vehicle that acts as a buffer to modhing temperatures produced by processes entering the planet’s atmosphere.

Workers investigated SpaceX Starship Rocket on March 3, ahead of their eighth unweced test flight.

On Mars, one of the key issues is air. It is almost entirely made up of carbon dioxide.

When a spacecraft hits Mars’ atmosphere, it compresses the air in front of it violently, creating a burning temperature. And the conditions for re-entry are so intense that this process literally tears electrons from atoms, breaks down molecules, and turns carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen.

A re-entry into Mars actually produces more heatMusk suppresses oxygen, which destroys the shield than the process of returning to Earth. Starship’s heat shield ultimately needs to be durable enough to survive potentially multiple re-entry of both types.

The chances are likely to be small to solve all the technical difficulties required for SpaceX to send a cargo-filled spacecraft to Mars at the end of next year, but even bigger problems need to be solved.

For example, if SpaceX wants to send humans to Red Planet, the company must find a way to ensure that Starship’s appearance can keep people safe from the deadly radiation that showers through the six-month journey. You should have a life support system that is fully equipped with breathable air.

As Musk said, we need to explain the needs of all humans. “You can’t overlook it, just like it’s the equivalent of vitamin C,” he said.

Once the spacecraft’s vehicle reaches its destination, it will likely need to refill the fuel at a Mars depot before returning home.

Starship's heat shield needs to be durable enough to survive a trip to the surface of Mars.

As Musk said in a previous social media post, the idea that there will be enough infrastructure on Mars by 2029 or 2031 makes it strange to allow such crew missions.

Still, industry experts say SpaceX’s bold ambitions spark both excitement and skepticism.

“I’m a fan of what SpaceX is trying to do. I’m fully subscribed to this vision of a multifaceted society,” said Olivier de Weck, professor of astronauts and engineering systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “But that’s logistics first and foremost. And what I lack is my thoughts on cycling, fuel production and return to Earth.”

However, Phil Metzger, a planetary physicist at the Florida Space Institute, stressed that SpaceX tends to fulfill its promises, even if it’s a few years behind.

“They feel bad for some of them (the test flight obstacles on the spacecraft). “Given their design and development philosophy, I think they’re still in the window of expected results.”

But Metzger added, “We’ve reached the point where you start to worry.”

In Iran, daily life is “full of constant fear and distrust.”

0

CNN

Life is full of uncertainty after days of aggressive strikes between Israel and Iran for civilians caught up in the Israeli bombing campaign.

“This is war,” Tehran, the 58-year-old father of two in the capital, told CNN, adding, “No one really understands what that means.”

A week after the conflict, contact with the outside world for Iranians is difficult, hampered by sporadic internet and telephone coverage. Some – usually wealthy activists – have access to StarLink terminals, which provide independent internet access.

Speaking through audio recordings, messages and occasional phone calls, all those interviewed asked CNN not to reveal their names for fear of retaliation from Iranian authorities.

From Shiraz in southern Iran, the 55-year-old English teacher described a “large group of people” waiting to withdraw cash at a bank branch in the city centre.

“The workers were totally overwhelmed and said they couldn’t handle all these cash requests. I’m not saying it’s confusing, but I feel there’s a sense of the underlying panic,” he said.

Destruction and despair

“It feels like the missiles are chasing me. I’m going to Karaj and bombing there. I’m coming to Tehran and they’re bombing here,” the 27-year-old conscription soldier told CNN. Posted in Tehran, he was able to visit his family in Karaj over the weekend, but military rules in the capital prohibit the use of his phone and other devices. “I can’t even check the news.”

Shiraz’s hairdresser said, “I don’t even know what to say. You’re watching the video, watching the photos. People are being killed.

Smoke rises after an Israeli attack in Tehran, Iran on June 18, 2025.

“Israel and the United States don’t care about the people of Iran,” she said. “You want to hit a real target, but it’s surrounded by ordinary people. They’re destroying the country.”

A 22-year-old janitor at a Tehran apartment told CNN.

More than 200 people have been killed in Iran, and Israel’s strike has taken away much of its important leadership in the country’s military and nuclear programmes, according to Tehran. However, Iran has accused Israel of targeting its energy and digital infrastructure.

“We are paying the price for the dictatorship and its rog arrogance,” she shared a nurse in Mashad, northeastern Iran, where his father was an ornamented war veteran. “But now, all the troops (in the area) have been destroyed, so it appears that it’s a turn of its own,” she added.

Seeing the attacks on the deeply unpopular regime, some Iranians have confessed that they would welcome the strike even if civilians were caught in the bombing.

“I want to say what I really feel,” a Shiraz student told CNN:

“Even so, I say that, I’m really happy. I’m really, really, deeply happy!” she added. “I believe it’s worth it for future generations.”

However, even if diplomatic channels for peace begin to coalesce a week after the battle, there are no signs of the end of the bombing yet. Uncertainty is only driven by the US president bullying the possibility that US aircraft will take part in bombing campaigns.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei warned that America’s involvement in Israel’s military movement would “fall 100% into their loss,” and denounced Trump’s call for surrender.

Other Iranians share his rebellion.

“The mood in Iran is beginning to transform into a nationalist environment,” according to a 69-year-old Iranian-American woman visiting Tehran. “When we left town, I saw many cars waving the flag of the Islamic Republic through their windows.”

“I lost my son during the Iran-Iraq War and am pleased to fight America and the Zionists again,” the 78-year-old mosque caretaker in Isfahan told CNN.

The outlook for peace looks slim, one engineering student from Mashad told CNN.

“Now that Trump has come this far, he’ll see it all the way through. They won’t let the injured bear go free,” she said.
