Staff at the Kennedy Center have been told they have until June 12 to remove Trump’s name.

WASHINGTON — Lawyers for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have directed center officials to remove signs and other materials with President Donald Trump’s name in the facility’s title by June 12 to comply with a judge’s order.

In a June 4 memo obtained by USA TODAY, the center’s lawyers instructed employees to immediately change their email signatures, letterhead and other documents to reflect the name “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or “Kennedy Center.”

The memo says other changes to signage, templates, forms, brochures and website pages, such as removing Trump’s name from the building’s facade, must be completed by Friday, June 12 at the latest.

The memo follows a May 29 opinion by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordering Trump’s name to be removed from the Kennedy Center’s ownership within 14 days, including removing signs and removing Trump’s name from all official materials. A judge ruled that the president’s name was illegally added to the center.

The Trump administration said it would appeal the ruling, but shortly after the ruling Trump announced plans to transfer control of the center to Congress.

“We are complying with the court’s order and evaluating all legal options to maintain this activation and recognize President Trump’s leadership,” Roman Daravi, the center’s vice president of communications, said in a statement.

In December, the center’s board of directors voted to change the name of the Kennedy Center to the Trump Kennedy Center. Less than 24 hours after the action, a new sign was installed on the outside of the building reading “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center.”

Cooper, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, said the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which is made up mostly of Trump supporters, is violating a 1964 federal law that established the center to honor the 35th president, which makes clear that “the Kennedy Center must be named for and is intended to honor only President Kennedy.”

Kennedy Center ‘considering options’ after judge blocks closure for two years

In his ruling, Cooper also overturned President Trump’s plan to close the Kennedy Center for two years, scheduled to begin in July, to accommodate major renovations to the building.

Lawyers for the center argued in a memo that while the judge did not rule against the concept of temporarily closing the center, the board’s vote was “improper and a subsequent vote should consider more information.”

“The court did not rule that the center must remain open during the renovation, nor did it require that the center present any specific programs on-site during the renovation,” the memo to Kennedy Center staff said. “The Center is considering its options and will provide further guidance in the near future.”

The closure was approved by the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees in a March vote. In a 94-page opinion, Cooper questioned the reliability of the center’s executive director, Matt Floca,’s conclusion that renovations cannot be made without shutting down public facilities.

The judge also said the center’s board had “no meaningful say” on the issue when it voted to close on March 16. President Trump had already announced his closure plans on Truth Social on February 1st.

RFK Jr.’s Department of Health and Human Services wants Americans’ medical records. why?

0

The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking access to Americans’ medical records, but says the effort is not aimed at investigating links between vaccines and autism.

In a June 4 statement to USA TODAY, an HHS spokesperson said the Department of Health is “strengthening public health surveillance and modernizing data systems to better understand and combat the epidemic of childhood chronic diseases as part of Secretary[Robert F.]Kennedy’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ agenda. Americans need a robust system to monitor the causes of chronic diseases.”

The statement came after KFF Health News reported that Secretary of Health Kennedy was tracking these records to study the link between vaccines and autism. The World Health Organization and other trusted health organizations around the world have repeatedly stated that evidence shows that vaccines do not cause autism.

Funding for the effort had already been allocated through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. The initiative is not evidence of a national patient database or master patient index, the sources added.

Autism has long been a major concern for Kennedy. Immediately after taking over as health secretary, he said he intended to find out the cause by his first September in office. The deadline has since passed, but many scientists and autism advocates were quick to cast skepticism on the idea anyway, saying it oversimplified a very complex problem.

Last year, HHS denied it was planning an autism registry after the National Institutes of Health appeared to share plans for one. According to a report by CBS News, NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharyya shared an effort to potentially create a “disease registry” to study autism during a presentation on the NIH division’s vision at the April 21, 2025, Council meeting. On April 25, HHS officials told USA TODAY that no such registry has been created.

The registry was conceived as part of an effort to build a “real-world data platform” that would gather information from the public and private sectors to support research, HHS officials told USA TODAY at the time. The official did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions about other disease registries or the use of nonpublic health data.

In a recent series of closings, Applebee’s is saying goodbye to one of its franchised stores in California.

The restaurant, located in Calexico, about 10 miles southeast of El Centro, will close on Tuesday, June 16, the company confirmed in an email to USA TODAY on June 4.

The franchisee is Minot, North Dakota-based Apple Core Enterprises Inc., according to Applebee’s and online business records obtained by USA TODAY.

“The Applebee’s restaurant located at 2505 Scaloni Road will close on June 16,” Apple Core CEO Dusty Jensen said in a statement to USA TODAY. “We are extremely grateful for the support of our Calexico neighbors over the past 22 years and look forward to continuing to serve them at our nearby restaurants, including our El Centro location at 2421 North Cottonwood.”

Mark Giroux, area director for Apple Core Enterprises, told Imperial Valley Press that the restaurant’s lease is coming to an end, but the franchise owner is not happy with the terms of the renewal.

The restaurant employs about 30 people, according to Yuma, Arizona-based television station KYMA.

USA TODAY reached out to Applebee’s on June 4 for more information about the Calexico restaurant closure and a complete list of recent and future closings.

Here’s what we know about Applebee’s restaurant closures in 2026.

Applebee’s closure and dual opening

Multiple Applebee’s stores have closed in the past few months, including some owned by Atlanta-based Applebee’s franchisees. The franchise operated more than 50 stores, but recently filed for bankruptcy and closed 10 stores in Florida and Georgia.

Franchisee Neighborhood Restaurant Partners Florida filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 24, saying it owes between $10 million and $50 million.

In court documents obtained by USA TODAY, the company said it acquired 50 Applebee’s restaurants in May 2012 and acquired 15 more from another franchisee four months later. The company enjoyed some success from 2013 to 2015, but sales declined in late 2015.

“The company has since experienced a period of ups and downs, battling various failed strategies and promotions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the inflationary pressures currently impacting the entire restaurant industry,” Neighborhood Restaurant Partners of Florida said in court documents reviewed by USA TODAY.

Franchisees also cited increased operating expenses due to inflation.

But while some Applebee’s franchisees are closing stores, the company is expanding into new territory by opening two stores: Applebee’s and IHOP.

Applebee’s opened its first dual-brand Applebee’s and IHOP store in the United States in February 2025 in Seguin, Texas, approximately 55 miles from San Antonio.

Another opening took place in New York on March 18th. Applebee’s franchisee Dougherty Enterprises said in a news release that the location is in Hawthorne, about 30 miles from Manhattan.

“This new dual-brand restaurant offers local residents the flexibility to enjoy everything from IHOP’s signature pancakes and breakfast classics to Applebee’s burgers, wings and late-night favorites all day long,” the company said.

Regarding the chain’s recent changes and closures, John Payton, CEO of Dine Brands and president of Applebee’s, said in a statement to USA TODAY on April 3, “The Applebee’s brand remains strong.”

He added that the company is “focused on stability, growth and doing what’s right for our guests, team members and franchise partners.”

Two Dan Sullivans on Alaska Ballots Raise Republican Concerns

0

play

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan is facing another candidate with the same name on Alaska’s primary ballot. The incumbent is one of 16 candidates running in the state’s open primary.

The second candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, is a former teacher and Republican with no ties to the senator, according to reports from the Associated Press and Fox News. His presence on the ballot prompted claims by the incumbent that the move was politically motivated and intended to confuse voters.

The senator told reporters in Washington, D.C., that he believes Democrats and allies of former Rep. Mary Peltola of Alaska are behind an effort to “deceive” voters. He called the situation a “dirty political trick” and suggested it could amount to election interference. He also said he was considering legal action.

Both the Peltola campaign and the Alaska Democratic Party deny any involvement, saying they have no connection to either candidate named Sullivan.

USA TODAY has reached out to both candidates named Dan Sullivan and the Pertora campaign for comment.

Republicans raise concerns about voting fairness

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) also expressed concern, sending a letter to Alaska election officials arguing that similar names could violate the state’s rules against confusing or misleading ballot designations.

The NRSC described the challenger as a “fake candidate” and urged authorities to remove him from the ballot. The commission also warned of possible legal action if the issue was not resolved.

Ranked selection system raises the stakes

Alaska’s election system is even more complex. In the state’s open primaries, the top four vote-getters, regardless of party, advance to the general election. The general election uses ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to rank candidates based on their priorities.

The system means that both candidates, named Dan Sullivan, could appear on the general election ballot if they finish in the top four, a scenario Republicans say could confuse voters and affect the outcome of the closely watched race.

Don’t miss the July 10 deadline to apply for a coronavirus refund. here’s help

0

play

Assistance is available to tens of millions of Americans who may receive a coronavirus-related IRS refund but don’t know how to apply for it.

Last November’s court ruling in Kwon v. United States suggests that some penalties and interest levied during the nearly three-and-a-half-year federal COVID-19 disaster period may have been inappropriate, meaning taxpayers may be entitled to refunds or reductions in those amounts. The government is appealing the decision, so refunds are not guaranteed, but there is no time to wait. The deadline to make a claim is July 10th, or Americans will lose their chance to get that money forever.

But determining whether you or your business is eligible for a tax refund or relief, how much and how to apply can be difficult, as legal red tape still remains. Independent Tax Advocate Erin Collins and other law firms and accountants have published guidelines and steps Americans can take to resolve this issue, but even those may require a lot of effort and patience. To make things easier, companies are now creating quick and simple tools to help.

“Time is of the essence for those considering applications,” said Glenn Frost, a founding partner at Frost Law. “Given the calendar and mailing requirements, this is not something to postpone until the last moment.”

Although July 10 is only about a month away, Frost cautioned that it could still take a week or so for businesses to receive and evaluate their IRS tax data.

What do I need to use the tool?

Taxpayers simply need to verify their identity and sign an IRS form so that their attorney or accountant can view their IRS tax return. After we verify your return, you will be notified if it is eligible and how much you will receive.

Tools such as those offered by Frost Law and CovidTaxRefunds.com take a few minutes to complete. You can check out Frost’s tools for free in advance, but you may have to pay if you decide to have Frost’s tools file a claim to protect your right to a refund or reduction if the Kwong decision survives appeal. CovidTaxRefunds charges a flat fee to evaluate and prepare your penalty and interest refund claim.

Who is eligible for a refund or reduction?

Collins said any taxpayer could qualify, including individuals, small businesses, large corporations, estates and trusts.

“This issue extends to taxpayers with obligations related to income, employment, inheritance, gift, and excise taxes,” he said in a blog post. “Taxpayers who file international information declarations late may also be affected and may be subject to significant penalties even if they do not owe any tax.”

How much money does it cost?

Billions of dollars in refunds are at stake, Frost said. The amounts vary widely from taxpayer to taxpayer, but in some cases, tax refunds or relief can be large, especially for businesses or taxpayers with large delinquent penalties.

Western Digital sued the government in February, seeking a partial refund of $53.6 million in taxes it paid in August 2023, when a tax dispute dating back to 2008 was resolved. The data storage company said it should not have been charged nearly $21 million in interest during the pandemic pause.

People “are only eligible if they submit their application by the July deadline,” Frost sad. “We continue to urge people to review their eligibility immediately and decide whether it is worth pursuing.”

First case of screwworm infection in the US confirmed in Texas

0

play

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed an outbreak of New World screwworm in southern Texas.

Wednesday night’s confirmation came hours after the Department of Agriculture announced earlier in the day that there was a possible case in South Texas and that the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, was working to confirm it.

The parasitic fly has been detected in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, making it the only detection in the United States so far, according to the USDA. Larvae were found in the calf’s navel.

On Wednesday night, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a social media post that the USDA is working with Texas officials to “contain and eradicate the pest,” reinforcing her statement that the U.S.’s “food supply is 100% safe.”

This new detection, the first since the 1960s, prompted federal and Texas agencies to work together to take the following steps to combat screwworms.

  • An integrated incident command team with the Texas Animal Health Commission was formed and response personnel were dispatched to the area.
  • A 20km infection zone was established around the detection area, and quarantine, movement restrictions and surveillance were implemented in this area.
  • In addition to the 4 million airborne releases of sterile flies per week already in the region, the targeted release of sterile NWS flies was accelerated by the immediate deployment of ground release rooms in the region.
  • Increased capture of NWS flies along the border and just outside the spray area.
  • Implemented monitoring and management strategies for NWS in wildlife.
  • We conducted awareness-raising activities targeting the local community.

Additionally, USDA says the National Veterinary Stockpile stands ready to assist and will provide resources to the response, including treatment, equipment, and logistical support as needed.

All ports of entry in the southern United States are currently closed to livestock trade, and preventive measures began even before the detection in Zavala County.

Where is Zarba province?

Zavala County is located southwest of San Antonio, between the city of San Antonio and the border.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the population is 9,670.

Texas Department of Agriculture asks people to report suspected cases of New World screwworm

According to the USDA, if you suspect your animal is infected with screwworms, immediately contact your state animal health authority or your USDA regional veterinarian.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department also details who individuals can contact in certain situations.

USDA noted that NWS maggot infestations typically affect livestock and other warm-blooded animals, and cases of human infection are rare. Flies most often enter an animal through an open wound and eat the animal’s live flesh.

How does the New World screwworm spread and infect animals?

According to the USDA, the New World screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and rarely people and birds. Fly larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals.

USDA reports that the current risk to animals and people in the United States remains very low and NWS is not contagious.

Rather, screwworm parasitism begins when a female fly lays eggs in a wound or body opening. The eggs hatch into larvae, which burrow into the wound and feed on living tissue. After about 7 days of feeding, the larvae fall to the ground, burrow into the soil, and pupate.

Adult screwworm flies emerge from the soil after 7 to 54 days.

Committee reviewing President Trump’s arch is flooded with negative comments

0

A second federal commission reviewing President Donald Trump’s plan to build a 250-foot-tall arch in Washington, complete with a 60-foot-tall golden-winged Statue of Liberty, has been flooded with negative comments from the public.

The National Capital Planning Commission met on June 4 to discuss the project’s application, and more than 1,696 comments were shared on the commission’s website. When USA TODAY analyzed public comments using AI, more than 99% of the comments were negative.

The proposed arch would be located at Memorial Circle, the roundabout between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

“Please don’t build this giant vanity project to please President Trump. No one wants it or his billion dollar ballroom,” Jane Allison wrote in an email posted on the commission’s website. “He’s building monuments to himself and destroying the beautiful city of Washington, D.C. The people used to have a say in this. Trump can’t use our tax dollars to destroy the city the way he wants.”

Last month, the American Board of Fine Arts, appointed by President Trump, voted to approve the design for the Arch of Triumph at Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery. That’s because the president is trying to put his stamp on the nation’s capital through a variety of construction projects, including renovations to the White House ballroom, the newly renamed Trump Kennedy Center, and a reflecting pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

President Trump has said that construction of the arch does not require Congressional approval. The Home Office, the applicant for the project, wrote in its submission: The arch’s purpose is to celebrate the victories of the American people, inspire patriotism and love of country, and beautify our nation’s capital. ”

“This ridiculous arch needs Congressional approval and funding before it can be approved by our committee! This is another example of authoritarianism by this corrupt administration!” Jeff Eorio wrote. “There is no appropriation and Congress has not reviewed or considered this monster! It will destroy the landscape from Arlington to the Lincoln Memorial. For our country and our Constitution.”, Please stop this madness! ”

But one commenter was firmly in favor of the plan to build an arch: “I think the arch would be great,” Will Nance wrote. “I can’t think of a better way to commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary.”

Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, filed a lawsuit on behalf of three Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian to block construction of the arch. They argue that the arch obstructs the view between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, a view “carefully designed to symbolize the nation’s unity and the strength of a united nation after the Civil War.”

Although Congress has not authorized the construction of a memorial arch on federal land managed by the National Park Service, Public Citizen argues that this is a legally required first step before the government moves forward with construction. President Trump also did not seek Congressional approval to begin construction on the banquet hall, a fact that is being challenged in court.

President Trump dismissed the idea, saying the land was “owned” by the Interior Department.

The arch will be installed in the Memorial Avenue Corridor, an area that includes the Arlington Memorial Bridge, Memorial Circle, and Memorial Avenue Bridge on Columbia Island, Washington.

A memo from NCPC staff to the board noted that the Memorial Avenue Corridor was designed as a “symbolic and physical link between the Lincoln Memorial, which honors the 16th president of the United States, the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, and Arlington House, the former plantation home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.”

Edward Stieri of the National Park Conservation Association, who spoke at Thursday’s meeting, said that when Congress authorized the Arlington Memorial Bridge in 1925, it was designed low with classical restraint to avoid blocking sight lines between the monument and the cemetery.

“The proposed Arc de Triomphe would physically and symbolically shatter that relationship,” he said.

The staff memo also notes that the applicant is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to assess whether the proposed project will impact air operations, given its proximity to Reagan National Airport. The proposed project is located along the Potomac River, 3,000 feet from Reagan National Park and near the landing approaches of two runways. According to federal regulations for the “safe and efficient use and conservation of navigable airspace,” the FAA must be notified for any structure over 200 feet to determine “whether the proposed structure poses a hazard to air navigation.”

When considering applications, staff recommends that the commission require applicants to “analyze and justify the height of their projects” in accordance with the Building Height Act, a federal law that limits building heights.

“Arlington Cemetery is a powerful reminder of America’s military sacrifice, dedicated service, and national unity,” Carol Quillen, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said at the hearing. “The Arc de Triomphe would convey a jarring indifference to the sacrifices of veterans and detract from the view of the outside world from military families and visitors.”

Cruise packing mistakes that could land you a fine overseas

0

Not following local dress codes can cause problems for travelers visiting popular destinations.

play

Weather, onboard dress code, and length of trip are all important factors when preparing for a cruise, but the cultural norms of your destination are just as important.

Cruise passengers should consider the customs of the ports they are visiting when disembarking. This may differ from your home country’s customs. Carnival Cruise Line, for example, distributes guidance to guests on every voyage to New Caledonia’s Lifou Island, the cruise line told USA TODAY.

“Some destinations, such as the tribal island of Lifou, are home to proud indigenous peoples whose culture is based on respect and is often highly religious,” Carnival said on its website. “Such locations do not allow the wearing of swimwear in markets or other public areas that are not swimming areas. Communities in these locations also ask that visitors wear traditional one-piece or full-piece swimsuits and refrain from wearing bikini or monokini-type swimsuits while at the beach.”

That’s not the only place guests need to follow such guidelines. “The best way for guests to educate themselves is to research each port before departing,” Susan Guthrie, travel agent and owner of Cruisin’ with Susan and More, which partners with Travel with Sparkle, told USA TODAY.

Here’s what you need to know:

How to pack for a cruise considering local customs

Similar to Lifou, other destinations may have dress expectations for a variety of reasons.

camouflage: For example, wearing camouflage is illegal in many countries, including popular Caribbean cruise destinations such as Jamaica, Barbados, and St. Lucia. Royal Caribbean said on its website: “In many cases, this is because governments want only military personnel to wear the colors.”

Covering: “In (parts of) Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and many parts of Southeast Asia, visitors may be required to cover their shoulders and knees when entering churches, mosques, temples and monasteries,” Guthrie said. “Some religious institutions require women to cover their heads, while others may require them to remove their hats.”

Swimsuit: Wearing a bathing suit outside the beach or pool area may be frowned upon elsewhere as well. “In Spain, Croatia and some Mediterranean resorts, walking around the city center wearing only a bathing suit is considered rude and can result in fines in some municipalities,” Guthrie said.

Failure to dress appropriately may also result in you being denied entry to certain attractions or being allowed to participate in shore excursions. Royal Caribbean said on its website that in cases of fraud, travelers may have to report it to authorities.

Joanna Kusar, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Portside Travel Consultants, told USA TODAY that such cases could result in fines as well, depending on the destination and its rules. But she said it was unlikely they would receive prison sentences.

Cruise lines often share information about these expectations in pre-cruise documents, mobile apps, and during port negotiations. Guthrie advised travelers to speak to tour operators and check official tourism websites and destination guides.

“Cruisers should remember that what’s appropriate on the pool deck or at the beach isn’t necessarily appropriate on land,” she said. “Researching local customs and having some versatile and modest clothing options can help ensure a respectful and comfortable visit at ports around the world.”

Air conditioning equipment replacement cost by house size

0

Summer is here, the air is warm, and when you come home from a hot day, you want to feel the refreshing air from your air conditioner.

Unfortunately, that moment of relief can quickly turn to panic when you realize your HVAC system is broken and may need to be completely replaced.

In addition to the obvious question, “How quickly can I get back up and running?”, you’ll also want to know how much it will cost to replace it.

“There are so many variables,” says Josh Conder, division operations manager for ARS Central Division. “You can go from an 80% furnace at the basic end to a 96% efficient multi-stage communication system at the high end, which means the price range can range from $8,000 to $35,000.”

The cost of a new HVAC system is often high, so USA TODAY asked the professional HVAC installers at ARS, a national HVAC repair and replacement company, to explain exactly what homeowners can expect to pay.

What Affects HVAC Costs?

There are so many factors that affect the cost of a new HVAC system. In fact, there are so many that it’s hard to get an idea of the average cost range. “I know it’s good to have a solid answer, but there are so many variables and factors involved, including the size of your ducts and the current condition of your home,” Conder says.

  • brand: Some brands like Lennox and Trane tend to be more expensive than brands like Goodman and Amana.
  • HVAC system type: Heat pumps are more expensive than central air conditioners because of the way they are manufactured.
  • Energy efficiency: The higher the energy efficiency rating (SEER, EER, or AFUE), the higher the cost of the system. The minimum (and cheapest) SEER rating is 14 for northern states and 15 for southern states. You will pay much more for the most efficient HVAC systems with a rating of 20 or higher.
  • System capacity: The larger your home, the more tons/BTU you will need. Larger HVAC systems cost more to replace.
  • Installation complexity: HVAC replacement often involves more than just the unit itself. If you have an older unit and infrastructure, you may need to update your ductwork, thermostat, and electrical equipment before you can put your new system up and running.

Average HVAC costs by home size

The average cost to replace an HVAC unit is approximately $12,000, but depending on the replacement source, the average cost can range from $7,500 to $14,500. Larger homes require larger HVAC units, so expect your total cost to increase with square footage.

“Replacing a complete system can cost as little as about $12,000 and as much as $25,000, but can be much more depending on the job,” said Joey Dooley, general manager of ARS of Texas. “Once you start getting bigger jobs or additional jobs, you can move up from there.”

home size HVAC replacement cost range
1,500 square feet $6,000 to $10,000
2,000 square feet $7,000 – $12,000
2,500 square feet $8,000 – $14,000
3,000 square feet $9,000 – $16,000

HVAC cost for 1,500 square feet

On the low end, a new HVAC unit for a 1,500 square foot home can cost less than $5,000, while more efficient units or multi-unit systems can cost closer to $10,000. If you replace both your furnace and central air conditioner, you can expect to pay between $7,500 and $15,000.

Types of HVAC units Average cost per unit
central air conditioner $4,500 – $7,500
furnace $3,000-$7,000
ductless mini split $4,000-$9,500
heat pump $3,700 – $8,700

HVAC cost for 2,000 square feet

Heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems start to get expensive as the area gets larger. As your home grows, you’ll have more rooms to heat and cool, so you’ll need a system that’s large enough to handle it. An inexpensive HVAC unit costs around $5,000, but when you add in labor costs, it can easily exceed $10,000.

Types of HVAC units Average cost per unit
central air conditioner $5,500 – $9,000
furnace $3,500 – $8,000
ductless mini split $5,000-$11,000
heat pump $5,000-$10,000

HVAC costs for 2,500 square feet

If your home is 2,500 square feet, it’s not unheard of to spend $20,000 on a new HVAC system. This is especially true if you own an older home that requires modern ductwork and electrical installation to support modern systems.

Types of HVAC units Average cost per unit
central air conditioner $6,000 – $10,500
furnace $4,000-$9,000
ductless mini split $6,000 to $13,000
heat pump $6,000 to $12,000

HVAC cost for 3,000 square feet

For homes over 3,000 square feet, HVAC costs are nearly double the cost of a smaller system. Even a single furnace or AC unit can cost more than $10,000, and that’s before labor, ductwork upgrades, and electrical upgrades are taken into account.

Types of HVAC units Average cost per unit
central air conditioner $7,000 – $12,000
furnace $4,500 – $10,000
ductless mini split $7,000 to $15,000
heat pump $7,000 – $14,000

HVAC cost breakdown

Without adding labor costs, which typically cost $75 to $150 per hour, the average HVAC unit costs between $3,000 and $4,500 for a small unit and up to $15,000 or more for a premium or high-efficiency unit.

air conditioning unit low cost high cost
central air conditioner $4,500 $12,000
ductless air conditioner $4,000 $15,000
furnace $3,000 $10,000
heat pump $3,700 $14,000

How to reduce HVAC installation costs

There’s no hiding that replacing your HVAC is expensive, but there are ways to reduce costs.

  • Take advantage of rebate programs and government incentives. In 2026, local and state incentives will still exist, although fewer than they once were. Homeowners in states like New York and California can save thousands of dollars by upgrading to an energy-efficient HVAC system or heat pump.
  • Do not oversize the unit. A larger HVAC unit does not mean more air conditioning. Instead, you need a system that is appropriately sized for your home. “You can’t just remove a 3-ton system and install a 4-ton system just because a customer says, ‘I just want more air conditioning.’ It doesn’t work that way,” says Gregory Milich, ARS HVAC expert.
  • Don’t wait until an emergency occurs. If you wait until your HVAC system breaks down, you could end up paying higher emergency service fees or needing a complete replacement instead of a minor repair.
  • Use a reliable vendor. TThe right contractor can be a local company or a large national chain, but make sure it’s a reliable company. Make sure your HVAC provider is licensed, insured, and has the proper permits. This will help prevent future problems.

In a June 2 interview with CNN, the Pennsylvania Democrat from Allegheny County slammed Mr. Platner on a variety of issues, calling him a “crazy” and a “Nazi sympathizer.”

According to USA TODAY, Platner is the leading Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate, with a recent University of New Hampshire Research Center poll showing him leading Republican incumbent Susan Collins 51% to 42%.

Fetterman calls Platner ‘creepy’ over sexting scandal, slams Nazi tattoos

In a June 2 interview with CNN, Fetterman slammed Platner for allegedly sending sexual messages to women outside of their marriage through the massage app Kik under the username phustle0331.

“What kind of creeper? What kind of creeper…was on a platform like Kik and sent over a dozen explicit messages, and who knows what else there is,” Fetterman said.

Fetterman also complained to Platner about his skull and crossbones tattoo, which resembles the Nazi symbol. Platner said he didn’t know the meaning of the tattoo when he got it as a Marine and has hidden it ever since.

“When I was growing up, if someone had an obvious Nazi tattoo, you could probably conclude that they were a Nazi sympathizer,” Fetterman said.

Fetterman accuses Platner of sexting scandal, leaves Democratic Party

By criticizing Platner, Fetterman broke with Senate Democrats who have been hesitant to make negative comments about Platner since reports about his sexual texts with other women emerged, CNN reported.

On June 2, Platner met with Senate Democrats in Washington, D.C., including Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Peter Welch (D-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), CNN reported.

Prior to reporting the sexual texts, both Sanders and Warren had expressed support for Platner, USA TODAY previously reported.

“Now, why would the richest people in this country want to take down Graham Platner?” Sanders said on June 2, as reported by CNN. “That should tell you all you need to know, because he’s going to stand up for the workers. Is he a saint? I don’t think so. I don’t know many saints here.”

Fetterman and Platner are not fans of each other.

In an interview with CNN on June 2, Fetterman did not say whether he would support Plattner if he were the Democratic candidate, and when asked whether he would support Republican Sen. Susan Collins over Plattner in the general election, he answered, “No, no, I don’t know.”

Mr. Fetterman acknowledged that if Mr. Platner wins, “everyone will have to work together,” but Mr. Platner has also expressed his distaste for Mr. Fetterman. During an interview with Mehdi Hasan earlier this year, Platner responded to the comparison between the two, calling Fetterman “the bane of my existence.”

What was Platner accused of in the sexting scandal?

In late May, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that Mr. Platner had exchanged sexual messages with a woman outside of marriage before campaigning.

His wife, Amy Gartner, responded in a video posted on social media the same day. Although she did not directly address the texts, USA TODAY previously reported that she and Mr. Platner are undergoing marriage counseling to address the challenges brought up through the campaign as well as her infertility.

“I’m really angry and disappointed, and I think it’s really shameful that there are media outlets and groups of people who would spread gossip instead of talking about the real issues that Mr. Graham is addressing,” Gartner said. “No marriage is perfect and I don’t want a perfect marriage. I want ours to be.”

Platner’s past controversy over Nazi tattoo, Reddit post

Platner has been embroiled in controversy before, facing criticism over a now-covered tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol in October 2025, as well as for old Reddit posts in which he made controversial comments about sexual assault and race, USA TODAY previously reported.

In addition to covering up his tattoos, he denounced the content of his Reddit posts, saying he no longer agreed with what he said.

Are budgeting apps safe for your bank account?

0

Budgeting apps often require you to connect your financial accounts so they can track your spending and help you manage your money. This level of access naturally raises security concerns.

Fortunately, most popular budgeting apps protect your data with strong protections like bank-grade encryption and strict data retention policies. However, no digital tool is completely risk-free.

Here’s how budgeting apps work from a security perspective, and some tips to use them as safely as possible.

How budgeting apps work (from a security perspective)

Budgeting apps often connect to your bank or other financial accounts to display your transactions, if you give them permission. They typically use a third-party aggregator (such as Plaid) that acts as a bridge between the bank and the app, rather than a direct connection.

When you connect to your account, you typically log in through a secure interface. The aggregator will verify your username and password, but will not share them with your budgeting app. So the app receives data but does not get full banking access.

“This model has been stress-tested with millions of users to this point, and it’s held up pretty well,” says Scott Jones, financial advisor and founder of Genesis Wealth Advisor Group LLC. “When my family asks me if it’s safe to link my accounts, my honest answer is generally yes, as long as I keep using an established name.”

With this system, budgeting apps get “read-only” access. This means you can view your transactions, but you can’t move money into or out of your account.

How budgeting apps protect your data

Budgeting apps use multiple layers of security to protect your data. Here are some of the most common methods.

encryption

Many budgeting apps use the same level of encryption as mobile banking. Encryption converts data into unreadable code when it is transmitted or stored. That secret code can only be unlocked with a unique digital key.

read-only access

When you connect your financial account to an app, that app typically gets read-only access. You can view your transactions and balances to help you budget. However, you cannot initiate transactions such as payments, withdrawals, or transfers. Even if a hacker were to break into your budgeting app, they wouldn’t be able to withdraw money from your account.

secure authentication

We may also use secure login methods that require you to verify your identity before allowing access to your account. For example, many apps require multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA requires you to confirm your login using an authenticator app or by entering a code you receive via text.

The app may also alert you to unusual activity and notify you of login attempts from new locations or devices. These security measures help prevent unauthorized logins to your account.

Third party security provider

Many budgeting apps use third-party security providers to protect user data. They often rely on established data aggregators to establish connections with bank accounts. These providers follow strict encryption and compliance guidelines to keep your data safe.

Is it safe to link a budgeting app to my bank account?

It’s usually safe to link your bank account to your finances app, as long as you use a trusted app with strict security standards. Established budgeting apps tend to use the same high-level security standards as other financial tools, such as mobile banking apps and investment platforms. However, you should make sure you’re using a trusted app and avoid linking your account to new, untested services.

Keeping your information safe isn’t just about app technology. It also depends on your actions. Setting up multi-factor authentication, protecting your login credentials, and only logging in over private Wi-Fi are some ways to increase security.

Risks to be aware of

Despite the high level of security, risks still exist when it comes to managing money online. These risks include:

  • Data breach: Budgeting apps and financial aggregator services are potential targets for cyberattacks. If a data breach occurs, sensitive data may be exposed.
  • Phishing: Be wary of phishing attacks by scammers trying to obtain your financial information. These can take the form of emails pretending to be from a personal finance app, or fake login pages designed to steal banking information.
  • Fake app: Similarly, be wary of fake apps that try to imitate reputable services. Please make sure that you are downloading the official version of the app.
  • Weak password: Using weak passwords or repeatedly using the same password across multiple accounts can make you vulnerable to fraud and identity theft.
  • Over-allowed apps: Some apps may access more data than you’re comfortable sharing. Check how much data the app can display before linking your accounts.

How to use household account book apps safely

Here are some steps you can take to minimize risk and use budgeting apps as safely as possible.

  • Please use a strong and unique password. Use long passwords that include numbers, symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters, and don’t use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication. If available, turn on MFA to further protect your account.
  • Use only reputable apps. Use a well-known budgeting app that practices high-quality security.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when logging in. Data is more susceptible to theft on public networks.
  • Check permissions regularly. Check in to your app to see which accounts you’ve given which permissions. Be sure to delete apps that you no longer use.
  • Keep your apps updated. Older technology can be more vulnerable to security risks, so update your apps and phone software whenever updates are available.

“Credential reuse, where the password on your budgeting app is the same password that protects your bank login, is what really causes losses,” says Jones, the financial advisor.

The Federal Trade Commission also shares tips for protecting your accounts and protecting yourself from attempts to steal your information.

What to look for in a secure budget management app

Before you link your account to a budgeting app, look for signs that the app takes your security seriously. Here are some metrics to keep an eye on.

  • Clear privacy policy: Apps must have an official privacy policy that explains how data is collected and used.
  • Transparent data practices: You should also discuss whether and why you want to share your data with third parties.
  • Security features: Apps should have features to keep your information safe, such as encryption, MFA, and alerts for suspicious login attempts.
  • Established Reputation: Instead of risking your information with a new company, stick with an app that’s already well-known and has good reviews.

“Look for a privacy policy that clearly states whether your data will be sold or shared,” Jones advises. “If the privacy policy is vague, that’s usually the answer.”

conclusion

It’s natural and important to be cautious before sharing sensitive financial information with third parties, but as long as you choose a reputable company and follow security best practices, budgeting apps are generally safe to use.

Established apps use similar safety procedures as mobile banking apps, such as encryption and secure authentication systems. Also, access to your account is usually read-only and you cannot move money.

However, no app is completely risk-free. This is especially true if you use weak passwords, download unverified apps, or fall victim to phishing scams. By taking simple precautions, you can protect your information and take advantage of all the features budgeting apps have to offer.

Melinda French Gates makes new $215 million bet on women’s health

  • Melinda French Gates has donated $215 million to improve women’s health, including menopause.
  • French Gates previously pledged $1 billion to support women and families following the Roe v. Wade reversal.

Melinda French Gates learned that when men don’t do the right thing, people turn to women for answers.

She had a lot of it. The philanthropist and author has donated more than $400 million to fund women’s health in the past two years. She has advocated for access to contraceptives and abortion.

Now, she is donating an additional $215 million to improve women’s health, including during menopause, marking her first investment in midlife women.

“I’m here using both my voice and my money to say this is very important,” she told USA TODAY. “We need to put more money into this area so that women can grow and reach their full potential.”

“There’s so much more we can do.”

French Gates, 61, has long been vocal about supporting women.

She spent 24 years at the Gates Foundation, which she co-founded with her then-husband Bill Gates, giving away more than $100 billion with a focus on global health, including maternal care and health disparities. (The couple divorced in 2021, and details of the deal were kept private, but it reportedly included a multibillion-dollar endowment to support French Gates’ philanthropy. She left the foundation in 2024 and founded Pivotal.)

Her commitment changed after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, left abortion rights to states, and pledged $1 billion to support women and families. “For too long, underfunding has forced organizations fighting for women’s rights to be defensive and enemies of progress to be aggressive,” she said at the time. “I want to contribute to the game as well.”

French Gates’ latest donation was inspired by what she has seen on her extensive travels, from a women’s clinic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to a school in Malawi, and what she has seen in her own life.

Whether it’s walking through Seattle with a friend on a foggy Monday morning or going on a ski trip with friends where “one of the women literally had to leave the table because she had a hot flash,” menopause is a hot topic.

She said some of her friends visited multiple doctors before seeking treatment. According to one study, one in five women waits a year before their doctor diagnoses them as menopausal. Another study showed that 5% of women seeking help for perimenopause or menopause saw 11 doctors before receiving help.

French Gates considers himself lucky. Her three closest friends are several years older. “As they started facing this journey, they started sharing with me what they knew, what they didn’t know, and misinformation,” she says.

She knows she is privileged to have incredible access to the highest quality medical care. (Let’s just say she didn’t have a hard time getting estrogen patches.) Still, she said her doctor was slow to prescribe hormone therapy.

“We are far behind what we should know about this stage of a woman’s life. We are far behind in knowing exactly how and when hormones change. We are far behind in sharing information with women,” she says.

When she started sending money to other women, including young women in her book club, she felt a responsibility to do more.

“I thought this is something you should know, and I started realizing that as women, we’re trying to inform each other,” French Gates says. “There’s still a lot we can do here to make sure everyone is properly trained as well as providing the right information.”

The investment starts with $10 million to the Menopause Society to train health care providers from gynecologists to family physicians. The foundation will also continue to support access to contraceptives, train doctors to treat menopause, and advance research and treatment of conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women.

One study found that most doctors, including gynecologists, do not receive sufficient training in menopause during medical school. Of nearly 100 obstetrics and gynecology training program directors recently surveyed, fewer than one-third said they received training in their residency.

“We still have a lot of women to reach, and this will be a huge help,” says Stephanie Fabion, medical director of the Menopause Society and director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women’s Health. Fabion said the grant will help make care more accessible and affordable. Some areas lack trained menopause health care providers, and only about two-thirds of certified menopause health care providers report being insured.

“For too long, this phase of life, perimenopause and menopause, was honestly invisible,” French Gates says. “Women seemed to be expected to deal with it behind the scenes.”

Melinda French Gates wants to change the norm

Whether it’s battling maternal depression or seeking treatment for menopause, women don’t have to find solutions on their own, French-Gates says.

“For too long, women’s health has been a low priority and underfunded,” she says. For every dollar spent on health research and innovation around the world, 5 cents is donated to women’s health. “We need to change this because we know that if we invest properly in women’s health, women can thrive,” she says. “Humans are the default in medicine, right? That’s where research has been done.”

As a result, the burden shifts to women. This is a pattern we’ve seen throughout her career. She was reminded of it again when her ex-husband’s name appeared in convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s files released earlier this year and the media asked her about it.

“Whatever questions I have left about things I don’t know, I can’t even begin to know them all. Those questions are directed at those people, even my ex-husband. It’s them who need to answer those things, not me,” she said on NPR’s “Wild Card” podcast in February.

She says women and victims, many of whom were girls when they first reported abuse, should not have to shoulder the burden of exposing the crimes committed by men and holding them accountable alone.

“When it comes to these social issues, sometimes we default to using women to give answers and solve problems. I think we need to rethink that as a society and say, ‘Look, who’s responsible for what part?'” she told USA TODAY. “How do we change these norms?”

“Mom is living her best life right now.”

French Gates believes that redressing the balance, especially in the medical field, is a core part of supporting women leaders.

Melinda French Gates’ next game – see where she’ll donate $215 million

Melinda French Gates has donated $215 million to improve women’s health, including the first grants to benefit menopausal and midlife women.

With one in 10 women leaving the workforce due to menopause and a further one in five considering early retirement, the number of female leaders, who hold less than a third of senior positions, could decline.

“They’re at the peak of their careers, right when that woman is stepping into a CFO role, or stepping into a CEO or president role, and she has all this training and knowledge and experience,” she says. “We want people to be included in the workforce, not taken away from it. To do well at work and at home, we need to be healthy.”

French Gates sees hope in women in their 50s and 60s.

“It’s been an incredibly fulfilling year, and I feel lucky to be alive and thriving at this age,” she says. “These have been some of the most satisfying and fulfilling years of my life. You know, I feel like my youngest son is saying, ‘Oh my God, mom is living her best life right now.'”

Habeas and Elephant Happy

Happy, 55 year old elephant name is: snow whiteThe seven dwarfs died last week at the Bronx Zoo. She was euthanized as her health deteriorated. Happy has been a zoo staple since 1977. In fact, I remember meeting her as a child when elephants were still tasked with performing and riding for visitors. Happy was also famous in scientific circles for being the subject of a 2005 experiment in which he recognized himself in a mirror. This is a sign of self-awareness that has been recorded in only a handful of species.

But what brings happiness to a page is state court report She was also the subject of a fascinating (though ultimately unsuccessful) legal battle in New York over whether the writ of habeas corpus, used to grant release from illegal confinement, also applies to animals.

Happy’s experience at the Bronx Zoo wasn’t a great one, at least according to many animal rights activists. . . happy. In the wild, elephants are known to be social animals that live in herds that last for several generations, roam long distances, form lifelong attachments, and mourn their dead. However, since 2006, Happy has been living alone. In 2002, his longtime companion Grumpy was attacked by two other elephants and was eventually euthanized. Happy was then separated from the other elephants and paired with Sammy, a young female elephant, as his companion. However, Sammy also developed severe liver disease and was euthanized in 2006. The Bronx Zoo then announced that it was phasing out its elephant program and that Happy would have no new companions.

Animal rights groups have called for Happy to be moved to an animal sanctuary where he can socialize with other elephants and have more space. Zoo officials said Happy was well cared for and happy and it was unsafe to remove him. In 2018, the Nonhuman Rights Project filed a habeas petition in state court on Happy’s behalf, asking that Happy be released to an animal sanctuary, citing “her common law right to physical liberty.”

The trial court that heard Happy’s claim lasted three days and found that Happy was an “extraordinary animal with complex cognitive abilities and an intelligent being with highly human-like analytical abilities.” It pointed to her empathy, self-awareness, and ability to plan and work collaboratively to solve problems. However, based on precedent, it was concluded that Happy could not be treated as a corporation for habeas corpus purposes.

The case ultimately reached the state’s highest court, the New York Court of Appeals, which upheld the trial court’s ruling in a 5-2 decision in 2022. The majority drew a clear line. The writ of habeas corpus “is intended to protect the human right to freedom from unlawful confinement,” the court explained. It “protects the human right to liberty because human beings are human beings with certain fundamental liberties recognized by law.” Happy’s autonomy, intellectual, and emotional capacity simply were not an adequate inquiry, the court concluded.

The court also warned that recognizing that certain animals may seek habeas relief would overturn federal and state legal frameworks and “bring great destabilization to modern society,” including a flood of habeas applications. The court concluded that further protection for Happy should come from the legislature, not the courts.

The dissenters argued that the majority misunderstood the role of habeas corpus and common law courts. In the lead dissent, then-Justice Rowan Wilson (now Chief Justice) argued that habeas corpus has long been used by “enlightened judges to advance the law.” He pointed out that the system was used to respond to wrongful confinement involving enslaved people (understood in law as chattel) and abused women and children (understood at the time as having negligible rights and no independent legal existence). Even in cases where detention is generally permissible under current law, courts rendered justice based on the facts of individual cases.

The relevant question, Wilson suggested, is not whether Happy is a “person,” which he clearly is not, but “whether the detention of an elephant is so cruel and so contrary to the nature of the elephant that habeas corpus should be available under common law.” This, he argued, is “part of the fundamental role of common law courts in adapting the law as society evolves.”

Wilson also rejected the majority’s suggestion that such decisions should be left to Congress. He argued that the Habeas Corpus Committee has been promoting dialogue between the courts and the legislature for many years, which “produces public debate and sometimes leads to far-reaching legislative changes.”

The majority, on the other hand, argued that “the dissent is long when it comes to historical arguments” but “awfully short” when it comes to the legal foundations of animal freedom rights. And comparing Mr. Happy’s petition to those concerning abused women, children and enslaved people was an “abhorrent comparison with worrying implications,” the majority argued.

To date, U.S. courts have not recognized habeas corpus for animals, although other countries have recognized such claims. Last year, the Colorado Supreme Court rejected a similar claim brought on behalf of five elephants. In Michigan, the state Supreme Court is currently considering whether to hear an appeal of a lawsuit filed on behalf of seven chimpanzees. As Happy’s experience shows, animals often do not easily fit into the legal world designed by humans for humans.

President Trump criticizes CNN, again calling Caitlan Collins ‘corrupt’

0

play

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, June 3, President Donald Trump once again slammed CNN anchor and chief White House correspondent Caitlan Collins, accusing her of seeing hatred in her eyes.

Shortly after Trump answered a question about the Anti-Weaponization Fund, which he called a “beautiful thing,” the president slammed CNN as a “grossly twisted” and “very corrupt organization” before turning his attention to Collins.

President Trump said of Collins: “CNN is a very corrupt organization with corrupt reporters standing there.” “She never smiles. She’s a young, beautiful woman who never smiles. I’ve never seen a smile on her face. I see her standing there with hatred in her eyes.”

President Trump said Collins is said to be hated because “we have borders, we have a strong military, we cut taxes, we do what everyone wants, and we won the election by a landslide.”

Then, when the conversation returned to the “anti-weaponization fund,” President Trump again attacked CNN and the New York Times, accusing the news organizations of grossly mistreating “our people.” When Collins tried to interject, Trump curtly told her to “shut up.”

“You used to be a conservative,” he told her. “She was a conservative from Alabama. Can you believe it?”

Trump even suggested changing ownership of CNN to “settle things.” But he added that it might not be effective because “it’s very difficult to straighten the trash.”

CNN called Collins an “exceptional journalist” in a statement to USA TODAY and stood by its correspondent.

“Caitlan Collins is an outstanding journalist who reports with real depth and tenacity from the White House and on the ground every day,” CNN said in a statement. “She expertly delivers that coverage to the Anchor Chair and CNN platforms every day, and viewers around the world know they can trust them.”

President Trump’s $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization fund”

President Trump’s Anti-Weaponization Fund, which has sparked widespread condemnation and conflict between the White House and Congress, will provide up to $1.776 billion to what it calls “victims of law and weaponization,” including those convicted of assaulting police officers during the 2021 Capitol riot.

But the fund appears to have stalled since June 1, when the Justice Department appeared to withdraw from the effort. Asked if the Trump administration would halt the effort, the Justice Department said it would abide by the court’s decision to suspend the funds.

trump vs collins

Wednesday’s incident is not the first time President Trump has attacked Collins or CNN for their coverage of his administration. The 34-year-old journalist frequently sparred with Trump and was even banned from attending White House events in 2018 during his first administration, according to a previous report by USA TODAY.

In February, President Trump criticized Collins, saying he “didn’t smile” after he asked a question about the file on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In an exchange in the Oval Office on February 3, President Trump told Collins, “You’re the worst reporter,” and “CNN can’t get ratings because of people like you.”

He continued, “You know she’s a young woman. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile. I’ve known you for 10 years. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smile on your face. Do you know why you don’t smile? Because you know you’re not telling the truth.”

In December 2025, the president called a correspondent “stupid and mean” while discussing construction of the White House ballroom in a post on Truth Social.

In 2020, Trump left the White House briefing room after Collins asked him about the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine during a briefing on the coronavirus. Also in 2020, Trump called Collins and CNN “fake news,” according to Politico. Collins said he coined the term and used it often to describe media outlets he considered biased after he asked her about her relationship with North Korean President Kim Jong Un.

Caitlan Collins Biography

After graduating from the University of Alabama, Collins began her career as an entertainment reporter at the Daily Caller, a right-wing website founded by former Fox News star Tucker Carlson in 2014. She then worked as a White House correspondent for conservative media, covering the 2016 presidential election and President Trump’s first term, and then appeared as a frequent guest on CNN. Former CNN chief Jeff Zucker then hired her as a reporter, and she quickly rose to become the network’s youngest-ever chief White House correspondent at 28 years old.

She was promoted to chief White House correspondent ahead of President Joe Biden’s January 2021 inauguration. Collins will step down as White House correspondent in the fall of 2022 after former CNN chief Chris Licht was named co-host of the now-cancelled CNN This Morning, along with Don Lemon and Poppy Harlow.

After the cancellation of “This Morning,” Collins was named anchor of his own show, “The Source with Caitlan Collins.”

How to get rid of ticks, a homeowner’s guide

0

Ticks are blood-sucking parasites that can transmit dangerous viruses and bacteria, including Lyme disease. Although they don’t invade homes directly like many other pests, they can take up residence in and around gardens and hitchhike on humans and pets indoors.

Understanding how to get rid of mites and what attracts them in the first place is the first step to maintaining a safe garden. Here’s what USA TODAY and entomologists want you to know about removing ticks from your garden.

Why do mites come into the garden?

Unlike most other pests that come onto your property in search of shelter and food, ticks often appear in your garden after sucking down an animal or person.

“Ticks are carried onto people’s property by wild animals and pets; they rarely migrate on their own,” says Bob Gilbert, staff entomologist at Blue Sky Pest Control in Gilbert, Arizona. “Once they ingest a blood meal, they fall off the host animal. After that, their survival depends on what they fall into.”

Once mites have entered your garden, they can become a bigger problem if the area provides a continuous food source and is suitable for hiding and breeding.

“Ticks thrive in moist, shady, overgrown areas,” says Tom Dobrinska, technical training manager at Terminix, a national pest control company. “They are attracted to tall grass, fallen leaves, wooded edges, and dense landscapes with plenty of moisture and shelter.” They will also stay if wildlife or pets provide food.

How to safely remove ticks from the garden

“Effective professional tick removal focuses on habitat reduction and targeted treatment,” Dobrinska says. “This includes maintaining your lawn by mowing regularly, removing fallen leaves, and cutting back overgrown vegetation to reduce shady, damp areas where ticks breed.”

It’s also a good idea to keep wildlife out of your yard, as deer and other animals are often the ones that bring ticks into residential areas.

“Renovating fences and shelters can help exclude wildlife that may be carrying (tick) into your garden,” Gilbert added. “If you have wooded areas, brushy areas, or desert edge areas near your home, create distance between those areas and where people and pets spend time.”

However, there is no guarantee that these methods alone will solve your tick problem. Because ticks pose serious health concerns, these more holistic approaches should be combined with professional tick treatment.

Dobrinska said EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or permethrin are common treatments and preventative measures for ticks.

natural ways to get rid of ticks

There are also some natural methods to get rid of or repel ticks that you can use to keep your garden safe.

  • Remove straw from the lawn. “[The ticks]burrow into grass and other thatch that has high humidity,” Gilbert said. “De-thatching your lawn to reduce moisture and minimizing watering will help control mites.”
  • Keep your pet tick-treated: “Dogs and cats should be regularly treated for fleas and ticks by a veterinarian,” says Gilbert. “These animals are often discounted in tick control programs, but they also often introduce new ticks into your garden.”
  • Think about essential oils. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some studies have shown that certain essential oils, such as peppermint oil and rosemary oil, have some efficacy in repelling ticks. However, results have been mixed and this should not be the sole solution.
  • Habitat management: As mentioned above, making your home inhospitable to ticks and the wildlife that carry them is a good natural way to get rid of ticks. “Make your yard less attractive to rodents and other wildlife that can carry ticks by reducing tall grass, removing fallen leaves, and clearing brush.” Gilbert says.
  • Continuous monitoring: Make sure you know what ticks look like, especially the types you’ve dealt with in the past. Monitor yourself, your family, and your pets for bites in the future, especially after spending time outdoors.

Professional tick treatment and prevention

Most professional tick treatments involve integrated pest management, such as the approach used by Orkin, a national pest control company. The best approach is to combine the application of chemical insecticides such as picaridin and permethrin with many of the natural methods of mite control listed above.

“[Experts]start with an inspection to identify high-risk areas where ticks are likely to live or migrate,” Dobrinska says. “Technicians then apply targeted barrier treatments designed to reduce the number of ticks in these habitats.”

Permethrin around your property will kill any mites that try to enter your garden, and picaridin can repel them from common areas.

After initial treatment, experts will typically advise homeowners where to focus their efforts regarding landscape maintenance and may recommend ongoing pesticide applications depending on the risk.

How to prevent ticks from returning to your garden

Even after professional treatment, “the mites can come back if conditions in your garden remain the same,” says Gilbert. “Long-term prevention typically means habitat modification, monitoring, tailored pet protection, and targeted treatment when necessary.”

Your pest control professional may recommend any or all of the following to prevent mites from returning.

  • cut tall grass
  • Remove fallen leaves regularly in the fall
  • Continue maintenance of shrubs and bushes
  • Focus on pruning around the fence line
  • Keep wood piles high and dry
  • Choose infrequent, deep watering

Many pest control companies also offer ongoing garden treatments for mites, and these can also act as a perimeter defense against other pests in your area. Talk to your local pest control company about setting up regular pest control treatments to target ticks.

Common mistakes when trying to get rid of ticks

Ticks can carry diseases that are dangerous to pets and humans, so it’s important that the treatments you implement actually kill the tick population in your garden and prevent them from coming back. There are some common mistakes to avoid when performing tick control on your property.

  • Wide range of application uses: Although commercially available insecticides are very effective in treating mites, it is still important to use them properly. “A common mistake is to focus only on the center of the lawn, ignoring surrounding zones such as the edges of trees, tall grass, and brush, where ticks are most active,” Dobrinska says.
  • When relying on a single treatment: One professional treatment can kill the mite population in your garden, but you should consider ongoing application for continued protection. “If rodents, pets, and wildlife continue to introduce ticks into your yard and the habitat still supports them, the problem may return,” Gilbert says.
  • Failure to address fundamental issues: With food and shelter, ticks will return to your garden. Limiting wildlife on your property and keeping the landscaping well maintained will go a long way in preventing ongoing tick problems. “If prevention is not continued, ticks can recolonize the protected areas where they originally lived,” Dobrinska says.
  • If the type of tick cannot be determined: Different types of mites may require different treatments, so it’s important to identify them. For example, common tick treatments are only done outdoors, but “dog ticks can live and reproduce (and require indoor treatment) both inside the home and outside in the garden,” Gilbert says.
  • Relying only on natural remedies: Finally, while natural remedies can help control mites, they are not as effective as commercial insecticides and are often not sufficient to completely eliminate mites. For best results, combine a holistic approach with specialized treatment.

Have you been bitten by a tick? how to get rid of ticks

If you notice yourself, a family member, or a pet being bitten, you can remove the tick by following these steps: According to the CDC, most tick-borne illnesses are only contagious 24 hours after the initial tick bite, so start treatment as soon as possible.

  1. Remove the checkmark immediately. “Use fine-tipped tweezers to grab (the tick) as close to the skin as possible without crushing it,” Gilbert says. “Pull it straight out with constant pressure.”
  2. Hold the tick. After removing the tick, “place it in a tightly-sealed jar with a little rubbing alcohol for storage,” says Gilbert. It is a good idea to keep it for tick identification so that it can be tested by a health care professional for possible tick-borne diseases.
  3. Clean the bite: “After removal, the bite area should be cleaned with soap and water or a disinfectant,” Dobrinska says.
  4. Please consult a medical professional. Ticks can carry a variety of diseases and bacteria, so it’s always a good idea to seek help from a medical professional after a tick bite, especially if you notice flu-like symptoms. If possible, bring the tick to your appointment for testing.
  5. Future plans: Finally, you should take steps to keep ticks away to prevent future bites. Wear long-sleeved clothing when outdoors, use insect repellent containing DEET to repel ticks, stay away from thick grass and brush, and check for ticks immediately after being out in the wild.

When to contact a pest control professional

Even if a pet or family member only gets ticks once, this usually does not indicate a tick infestation, as they may have picked up ticks elsewhere and brought them to your property. However, if you notice ongoing problems with ticks, live near wooded areas, tall grass, wetlands, or have frequent deer, rodents, or other wildlife on your property, contact your local pest control company for treatment.

Ticks are dangerous and you should avoid removing or removing them yourself. Be sure to consult a professional about how to make it difficult for mites to settle in or apply targeted insecticides.

FAQ

What can quickly kill ticks?

Although some home remedies such as rubbing alcohol, bleach, and high heat in the washer/dryer can kill mites relatively quickly, the fastest method is to use permethrin, an EPA-regulated insecticide. Permethrin targets the central nervous system of ticks and other pests and kills them within minutes.

What smell do dust mites hate the most?

There is some evidence to suggest that the scent of peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, citronella oil, rosemary oil, and other essential oils may repel dust mites. Although these are not reliable methods of getting rid of mites, they can be used in conjunction with commercial products containing picaridin or DEET to repel mites.

How long do mites last in the garden?

According to the CDC, most tick species live for two to three years, but as long as food sources and hiding places exist on your property, the tick population can reproduce and sustain itself. Alongside professional treatment, making your garden as unattractive as possible by carrying out landscaping maintenance and reducing wildlife activity can help minimize the number of mites.

Where in the U.S. are the most emergency department visits for tick bites?

Tick-related emergency room visits are highest in Rhode Island, Vermont, and Maine, but other parts of the Northeast are also hot spots. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey all rank at the top of the chart. Residents of Midwestern states are next most likely to be hospitalized from a tick bite. Reports say 2026 could be the worst tick season in recent history, so prepare accordingly, especially if you live in a high-risk area.

Sidney Sweeney encouraged nudity on ‘Euphoria,’ says show creator

Sweeney’s character, Kathy Howard, becomes an online sex worker in season three.

Like her role in Euphoria, Sidney Sweeney doesn’t shy away from some controversy.

Emmy-nominated actress Kathy Howard, who explores the world of online sex work in the latest season of the HBO drama, was balked by the risqué storyline, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson revealed in an interview with The New York Times published Monday, June 1.

“The funny thing is, when I first wrote this song, I thought, maybe we could just shoot this whole thing and there would be no nudity,” Levinson, 41, told the magazine. “Maybe there’s a way to get around certain things?”

But Levinson said Sweeney didn’t want to take the safe route. “She looked at me and said, ‘Are you kidding me? I’m an OnlyFans model. Are you saying I’m going to wear a skirt?'”

“I think she’s a completely fearless actor,” Levinson continued. “She is also very professional and comes to the game every day. I love working with her because she is very flexible in terms of performance. We have a lot of trust.”

Season 3 of “Euphoria,” the final installment of Levinson’s button-pushing youth drama, aired its finale on May 31st. When the season was released in April, several critics slammed Cassie’s professional pursuits as an adult content creator.

Mashable’s Beren Edwards called the graphic portrayal of Cassie’s profession, including the backlash from her loved ones, “a gauntlet of overly sexualized humiliation.”

“‘Euphoria’ does not question these prejudices or further explore the complexities of sex work,” Edwards wrote. “Instead, we are happy to continue to embarrass ourselves by using Cathy’s wishes as a springboard to launch suggestive images designed to generate maximum controversy.”

USA TODAY TV critic Kelly Lawler said the season was “oversexed and underplotted, with characters more like Abercrombie cardboard cutouts than real people,” adding that the stars “simply get dragged and forced into Levinson’s male gaze.”

In an interview with the New York Times, Levinson defended the sexual provocation in Cassie’s storyline, saying, “She just wants to be loved. She just wants to be loved. It feels to me like a natural evolution of social media, whether it’s Instagram or anything else. You’re a product, you’re a brand. It’s based on external validation.”

“Look, we’re working in this OnlyFans world where women are getting paid to whisper into ear-shaped microphones and things like that,” Levinson added. “There’s a level of absurdity there that’s just fun, and we’re always trying to figure out ways to make it feel authentic and humorous and dramatic while also speaking to the characters’ larger desires and aspirations.”

Sweeney seemed to tease the character’s evolution in an Instagram post on Sunday, May 31, which included several photos of Cassie’s exciting looks from this season.

“It’s… called acting,” she wrote.

It’s now easier to fire federal employees. President Trump targets 8,000 employees

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on June 3 signed an executive order converting about 8,000 federal employees in “senior policy-influencing positions” to at-will employees and making it easier for his administration to fire them.

Approximately 97% of the reclassified positions are among the highest career positions, such as directors, chiefs of staff, senior advisers, and policy analysts, who are involved in drafting regulations and guidance and making federal grant decisions.

During an Oval Office event to sign the executive order, President Trump invited James Shirk of the Domestic Policy Council, the mastermind behind the change, to share his thoughts.

Shirk said the process of removing federal employees is often time-consuming.

“When you have employees who are trying to undermine the hopes of the American people, either by pushing their own agenda or simply not being able to do their job, agencies spend typical years removing them, and that’s a special problem,” Shirk said.

“This basically means treating these employees the same as private sector workers. They can be hired based on merit…but if they mess up, you can fire them really quickly rather than taking a year,” he added.

A fact sheet published by the White House more clearly explains the thinking behind this change.

The newspaper said that because firing employees is burdensome, “agencies rarely fire career employees” for “subverting the president’s priorities.”

The number of employees affected by this transition is lower than previously estimated by the Office of Personnel Management. In February, OPM estimated that approximately 2% of the federal workforce, or approximately 50,000 employees, would be reclassified to a schedule policy/career.

Since the inauguration of the second Trump administration, the federal government has cut more than 300,000 civil service jobs. The job cuts were driven by redundancies, buyouts and deferred resignation offers in conjunction with the Department for Government Efficiency.

  • President Donald Trump has criticized the newly opened Obama Presidential Center as trash and a disaster.
  • The Obama Presidential Center is located in Chicago and opens to the public on June 10th.

President Donald Trump often talks about former President Barack Obama, who left office nearly a decade ago.

President Trump has recently spent considerable time talking about renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, saying President Obama failed to restore the landmark. He made it clear that any future agreement to end the Iran war will be different from President Obama’s nuclear deal. (Obama told Stephen Colbert that he wanted Trump to believe him when he said it was an Obama initiative and that it was a bad deal because it “seems like a pattern.”)

President Trump is also targeting the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. On May 30, he posted a fake image of a giant trash can in a parking lot under the heading “Obama Presidential Library.” He also called the Obama Presidential Center a “disaster” in a Truth social post dated Feb. 22, saying it was over budget and behind schedule.

Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett responded to the remarks in an interview with USA TODAY during the center’s June 3 media preview.

“Judge for yourself,” she said. “When our visitors come, they’re going to see a great campus. If (Trump) wants to come and visit in person, we’ll welcome him and give him a tour.”

The White House did not immediately comment on whether Trump was planning a visit.

The center, which took about 10 years and cost $850 million to complete, is scheduled to open to the public this month. Please take a look:

When will the Obama Presidential Center open?

The Obama Presidential Center opens to the public on June 19th. As of June 3, tickets are sold out through the end of August.

Where is the Obama Presidential Center located?

The museum and surrounding campus are located in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side. It is near the University of Chicago and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

How much time and money was spent on the Obama Presidential Center?

In 2015, the Obama Foundation announced that Chicago would be the home of its presidential center. The following year, the focus was on Jackson Park. Jackson Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, triggering a multi-year review process by the federal government.

A Chicago-based nonprofit organization called Protect Our Parks filed a lawsuit seeking to block construction of the historic site, but the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed. The center also faced concerns from some local community groups that its presence would be at the expense of local residents. The foundation promotes its investment in the community through an estimated 750,000 annual campus visitors and 300 permanent jobs. The Chicago City Council also passed a neighborhood affordable housing ordinance.

When the Obama Foundation finally broke ground in 2021, it estimated the project would cost $500 million. Recent estimates by the Foundation put the price at $850 million.

The center includes a ticketed museum, a civic center with a cafe and restaurant, an athletic center, a branch of the Chicago Public Library, and more.
