Halle Berry wants to make your next genetic testing appointment better

  • Halle Berry is an investor in Nera, a company that has developed a new, more comfortable speculum for pelvic exams.
  • NellaSpec is smaller than a traditional speculum and is sold directly to consumers for about $50 to $80.
  • Berry became an advocate for women’s health after her menopausal symptoms were misdiagnosed.

NEW YORK — Global superstar, Emmy, Golden Globe and Oscar winner Halle Berry wants to talk about your vagina. More specifically, how to stay healthy.

“It’s my favorite subject, by the way,” she laughs.

She began advocating for menopause and midlife care in 2024 after her doctor misdiagnosed her symptoms as herpes, and pushed for legislation to fund research and education on women’s health. That same year, she became an investor in Nella, the company that designed NellaSpec, a new speculum for pelvic exams and pap smears.

Experts recommend that women have an annual gynecological exam (often including a pelvic exam) and a pap smear every three years, depending on their age and risk factors.

“It’s so important to have these annual checkups, but too many women are worried about going for a test due to pain or fear, and may even refuse,” Berry says. “I think when I was younger, I chose not to participate. Sometimes I would go two or three years without participating because I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to face it.”

Traditional speculums are metal or plastic, come in a variety of sizes, are cold, noisy (clunking or clicking), and can be uncomfortable. “Going to your first gynecological exam can be like torture, and so was I. It’s very intimate and personal. My daughter just turned 18 and is about to go for her first gynecological exam,” she says of her daughter, Nahla Aubrey. “When I put my leg up in the stirrup, a large cold metal speculum gets stuck inside and it’s very uncomfortable.”

Tests can be painful for menopausal women. “When you lose estrogen, it hurts there. Sex is painful,” Berry says. “So imagine how painful it is to go to the doctor’s office and get a speculum. It feels like you’re being opened up like a Buick. That’s how it feels in your mind.”

NellaSpec is a disposable plastic instrument that is smaller than a traditional speculum. They are slimmer than tampons and have four tulip-like openings instead of two. The device pushes vaginal tissue back in four directions, so it could be smaller and more comfortable, said founder Fahti Khosrowshahi.

The company also sells directly to consumers on its website or through Walmart in four different kits tailored for first-time testing, menopause, and different body types. The kits include wipes, aromatherapy, and comfortable socks, are not covered by insurance, and cost between $50 and $80.

“We can take our health into our own hands,” Berry says. “Our comfort is important.”

Women’s healthcare lacks innovation

Berry called the upgrade premature, saying, “It hasn’t been reconsidered for a long time.”

Speculum has a checkered history. Although the device dates back to Roman times, one of its modern innovators tested it on enslaved women without anesthesia. In the UK, women suspected of being sex workers were forced to undergo speculum examinations.

But the device has also helped doctors detect cervical cancer in countless women, saving lives.

“Anything that makes gynecological exams easier, less painful, less frightening is all good. Stop it completely. So many women are afraid to go to their gynecologist because they’ve had a bad experience,” says Kate O’Connell White, M.D., chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the Boston University Chobanian Avedizian School of Medicine. “However, it is heartbreaking to think about the need for innovation in this area, because so many women have experienced that their gynecologists and nurses did not take the time to perform the test or provide people with the care they needed for the test.”

White points out that there are several ways to make speculum examinations more comfortable. “I always use the smallest size possible, I always use a lot of lube, and I always examine very slowly. I tell my patients these are the three keys to a good pelvic exam,” she says. “And the vast majority of my patients tolerate it just fine. In fact, they say it’s not as bad as they thought it would be.” Many doctors warm the speculum with water or use a table with a built-in heating drawer for the speculum.

It also costs money. “The price of these speculums means we’re selling them to a very limited number of people who can afford them. Obviously, this is not something you need every month like oral contraceptives,” White says. “But it’s still very expensive, even though it’s something you wouldn’t need to buy anyway. So there’s a real capital issue here.”

She understands the appeal of the device for women getting tested for the first time, women who are perimenopausal, women who are no longer sexually active or have a partner without a penis, and women who are overweight.

“Obesic patients often receive poor gynecological care across the country,” White says. “Larger women have a really, really hard time in the gynecologist’s office because not every place has a larger speculum, and larger speculums are more uncomfortable. If this can help them, it’s a serious game-changer for women.”

Are doctors open to a bring-your-speculum approach? “As long as they’re confident they can use it correctly and without causing any more pain, they’re happy to use it. Typically, they don’t start using a device on a real person until they try it on a model,” White says. “As long as it’s as easy to use as it looks and as long as I can open and close it and feel comfortable before putting it on someone, I’m happy to use it.”

But, she warns, “If a doctor can’t get it within 10 seconds, they may not want to use it, because they never want to put something in their body and have a problem once it gets into their body. That’s even worse.”

White added that clinics are also working to move away from single-use plastics. According to the company, NellaSpec also offers a reusable option for clinical settings that is currently used by hospitals such as Cleveland Clinic, UC Systems, Kaiser, and Columbia, and the cost is part of the test.

However, there is one part of the inspection that NellaSpec cannot replace. It’s Pap itself. “Then people hiss in and say, ‘What hurts?'” That’s daddy scraping. ”

next generation healthcare

Healthcare is rapidly becoming more decentralized with the rise of home-based and patient-owned devices and tests. NellaSpec will likely be the first of many innovations to come.

Despite her concerns about Neraspec, White concedes, “There’s no price tag on health. There’s no price tag on catching cervical cancer early or finding precancerous conditions before they turn into cancer. Ask any cancer patient: Is it really worth the money you’re willing to pay to avoid your current condition?”

Berry sees opportunity for the next generation.

“What I love about Nella is that my daughter is going to have a different day,” she says. “It’s so great to be able to talk openly with her about this. She understands what I’ve been through. She’s seen the work I’ve done. She’s the one who has gone through menopause with no idea what’s going on with my body, angry, crazy, frustrated. I’ve seen her go from being a woman in her periphery phase to now a confident, strong woman who understands everything that’s going on with my body and can talk about it ad nauseum and explain it to her, so she’s not at all afraid to go into this phase of her life. ”

Albanians protest against resort linked to Jared Kushner

TIRANA, June 5 (Reuters) – Thousands of Albanians took to the streets of Tirana late on Thursday in the week’s largest protest against a luxury resort being planned in an environmentally sensitive area of the Adriatic coast by a company linked to President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

The 1.4 billion euro ($1.6 billion) project is being led by Jared Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners on an undeveloped coastline near the Vijosa Narta Reserve, an island off the coast of Albania and a wetland that is a nesting habitat for southern flamingos, seals and sea turtles.

Environmentalists have opposed the plan, saying it would affect hundreds of hectares of pristine beaches and the thousands of flamingos that nest or migrate through the area each year.

Last week, foundation work and the arrival of heavy equipment at the Villosa Narta site sparked local protests, followed by large street demonstrations in Tirana.

Protesters gathered again in front of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office late Thursday, holding pink inflatable flamingos and chanting “revolution” and “stop the plan”. The placard read: “Edi Rama, resign.”

“Albania is not for sale. Albania belongs to the Albanian people and we decide what we want to do here. It’s not like some corrupt politicians who run Albania can decide what to do with our assets, which are Albanian heritage, natural heritage and cultural heritage,” said writer Lindita Komani, who took part in the protest.

Rama defended the project. The developers said they would focus on “responsible management and environmental enhancement.”

Albania’s Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj said on Thursday that a draft environmental impact assessment has been prepared for the proposed investment, which must fully comply with environmental laws and protect local habitats.

Albania’s state news agency ATA reported that European environmental directives and Albanian law provide legal guarantees against projects that could damage protected lagoons and their surrounding habitats.

Mr. Kushner announced plans to build the resort in 2024 as part of a broader investment that also includes a former army headquarters in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Last year, he abandoned the Serbia project following street protests.

Carnival’s private island makeover reveals larger cruise trend

0

The new investments in the Bahamas and other countries show how Carnival is reshaping its cruise itineraries around luxury destinations.

play

  • Carnival Cruise Line has upgraded its private island in the Bahamas and renamed it Half Moon Cay Relax Away.
  • New additions to the island include a pier, tram service, restaurant and complimentary loungers and umbrellas.
  • Carnival is expanding its portfolio of private destinations, known as the Paradise Collection, to accommodate larger ships and enhance the guest experience.

The sun was shining as I walked along the Papaya Pathway at Relax Away on Carnival Cruise Line’s Bahamas private island, Half Moon Cay. Visitors played volleyball on a nearby sandy court before jumping up and down, while others lay out on rows of loungers.

Trams whizzed along the sidewalks, dropping off passengers at stops named after fruits ranging from limes to guavas, and beach rental stations were stocked with one- and two-person kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel masks and fins, and three-wheeled aquacycles. But this was no raucous beach party. Visitors seemed to be relaxing, drinking tropical drinks and swimming in the sea.

Until recently, many of them did not exist. The cruise line welcomed guests to the upgraded island on June 1, as passengers on the Carnival Sunrise, carrying about 3,000 guests, explored the newly developed north side of the island for the first time.

Relax Away represents a significant investment in the company’s land-based operations, with an expanded white-sand beachfront that transports visitors to turquoise waters, but that’s not all. Carnival is focusing on its coastal portfolio and developing the Destination Paradise Collection.

Here’s why and what guests need to know.

What’s new with Relax Away at Half Moon Cay?

The destination’s new name – previously just Half Moon Cay – is one of many updates.

When I stepped out onto the balcony of my cabin in the morning, I saw the Carnival Sunrise moored at the new pier, about a 5-minute walk from Welcome Plaza. Also newly added, the tram service can visit six stops that act as its own section, or guests can walk between stops (a handy on-site map shows travel times; the longest is a 15-minute walk).

Each section has its own activities and facilities, from the artisan market at the Coconut Line tram stop that guests enter, to Lil Tiki Bar (try the refreshing, sweet but not too strong Bahama Mama) at the Lime tram stop, to Luna Tide Beach Bar at the avocado stop. There are currently no in-flight drinks packages on the island, and drinks such as cocktails and sodas must be purchased a la carte (although water and juices are complimentary).

Two of the stops have buffet style restaurants. During my visit, customers were lining up for lunch at Hibiscus Beach Grill, which offered free burgers, fries, and a nacho bar with toppings like pulled pork and chili con carne, as well as snacks like salads and fruit.

Loungers and umbrellas (previously charged) are free, but other options like cabanas and daybeds are available for an additional fee. Prices vary depending on the sailing and the package selected by the guest.

The cruise company also retained certain trademarks of the island, such as tours that took guests on horseback on the beach.

Carnival President Christine Duffy said the destination will accommodate two ships docked at the pier and one tender boat, including the Excel class and the upcoming larger Project Ace ship. However, the cruise line plans to limit capacity on the island until September as it ramps up operations.

Holland America Line, also part of Carnival Corp., is also visiting the island’s existing south side, adding its own “new design elements and food and beverage upgrades,” according to a news release.

As the name suggests, Relax Away is “a little more relaxed and low-key” than Celebration Cay, another Paradise Collection destination that opened on Grand Bahama Island last year, with waterslides and a giant freshwater lagoon, Duffy said.

“What’s really great is the beach,” she said during a media briefing aboard the Sunrise. “So I think sometimes we lose the color of the water, the beauty of nature, and when we crowd in too many other things to distract from it.”

However, guests can visit both on the same voyage. My 5-night itinerary started from Miami and back, stopping at two private destinations and Nassau.

What other private destinations is Carnival developing?

In late May, Carnival announced a new name and upgrades for Isla Tropical on Roatan, Honduras. The island opened in 2009 as Mahogany Bay. The new Mangrove Bay pool area will include a swim-up bar and children’s splash pad, providing guests with an additional 48,000 square feet of recreational space.

In addition to Relaxaway, Celebration Cay, and Isla Tropical, Carnival also has special destinations in Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Puerta Maya in Mexico.

While RelaxAway and Celebration Cay are destinations in their own right, Duffy said on the ship’s Wave Morning Show that the company refers to the other ports as “gateways.” Because these are places that take us to places where we can have special experiences in ports, but they are also gateways to visit these very beautiful places and do shore excursions.

Why is Carnival leaning toward private destinations?

As Carnival builds new, larger ships, there are only a limited number of ports those ships can visit, Duffy said. Many of the private destinations have been part of Carnival Corporation’s portfolio for many years, but they were not always marketed in the way they are today.

“And now, as we invest in these new ships and the larger ships that we have, the focus is on us saying, ‘Okay, we have to invest in these destinations,'” she said at a press conference.

Although Carnival still operates longer cruises, including popular eight-day cruises to Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, many of the cruise line’s itineraries are shorter. Having a unique destination near the Bahamas has multiple benefits.

“The environmental benefits are obvious because it’s so close,” Duffy said. “There are also fuel benefits, which are popular with our guests.”The new pier will also make port calls more reliable, as ships may not be able to operate tenders in bad weather.

The changes come as many other cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, are adding or upgrading land-based services, from private islands to small beach clubs.

Marilyn McAleer, a cruise travel analyst with Focus Light, told USA TODAY in 2025 that having their own destinations gives cruise lines more control over the experience, from the design to the ships that call there and the price of food and drinks. Some communities are pushing back against overtourism. Geopolitical developments that may impact Itineraries and private destinations become more predictable and convenient.

Carnival isn’t over. For example, there is an opportunity to further expand the Isla Tropical fleet, and the cruise line plans to make additional investments at Celebration Cay, Duffy added. “We’re always going to be thinking about what’s next.”

US Senate supports $70 billion in new funding for ICE and Border Patrol

0

play

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Friday voted early for Republicans to approve President Donald Trump’s request for $70 billion in additional funding for immigration enforcement, bypassing Democratic opposition.

Voting continued in the Senate, and once completed, the bill will be sent to the House for final approval. The House is not scheduled to consider the bill until next week, Republican leaders said.

Much of Thursday’s lengthy debate over the bill was overshadowed by efforts by Democrats and some Republicans to insert language unrelated to immigration. Those proposals revolved around banning the use of federal funds, and even private donations, to build a lavish 90,000-square-foot ballroom on the White House grounds that President Trump wants.

Senators also debated a provision that would make it illegal to use federal funds for “anti-weaponization” funds that compensate President Trump’s political allies for alleged government mistreatment.

None of these amendments were approved.

The money provided by the bill would help pay for President Trump’s controversial immigration deportation crackdown over the next three years and shore up about $100 billion in unused law enforcement funding for the Department of Homeland Security that Republicans who control Congress enacted last year.

Trump says fund is ‘very important’

Lawmakers began voting on amendments to the immigration bill in a “Vote-a-Rama” session early Thursday morning, culminating in a vote on the underlying bill early Friday.

The first move by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to eliminate the “anti-weaponization” fund, which Democrats called a “slush fund” for Trump’s allies, caused Congress to halt for several hours, mostly on procedure, after Republican Sen. Susan Collins voted in favor of the motion.

She was later joined by Republicans Jon Husted and Dan Sullivan.

“This is atrocious, and it will not go away until we permanently ban it by law,” Schumer said of the $1.776 billion fund in a speech before the full Senate.

His bill failed on a 50-49 vote, exposing the political turmoil among rank-and-file Senate Republicans. Some of them called for their own amendment to permanently eliminate the fund five months before the November midterm elections. Collins, Husted and Sullivan all face fierce campaigns for re-election as President Trump’s approval ratings decline even among Republicans.

Critics say the fund allows Trump to use tax dollars to compensate political allies, but the White House and Justice Department have already put a hold on it.

But on Wednesday, Trump declined to say whether the fund had actually ended, telling reporters, “I love this fund. I think it’s very important.”

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who opposed Schumer’s motion, told reporters he would not support passage of the funding bill unless Republicans vote on an amendment to codify Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s testimony to Congress that the administration is abandoning the fund.

Tillis argued that failing to do so would burden Republican lawmakers up for re-election in November who are concerned about voter backlash against the fund.

Opponents call fund ‘imminent and serious threat’

Almost all of the bill’s funding would go to DHS’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Protection agencies, where the Trump administration has been aggressively deporting people across the country.

Mr. Tillis later proposed his own amendment that would reallocate Trump Fund funds to fraud enforcement efforts. Although it had the support of 12 Republican senators, it was rejected by a vote of 84-15.

Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who proposed his own amendment to eliminate the fund, along with Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, also asked U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in a friend-of-the-court brief to uphold the injunction on Mr. Trump’s fund that he imposed last week.

They argued that the fund “poses an imminent and dire threat to our nation’s constitutional order and the authority of Congress.”

A number of President Trump’s recent actions, from his request for $1 billion in taxpayer funds to upgrade the White House banquet hall and security, to his decision to nominate Blanche as attorney general and political ally Bill Peult as director of intelligence, have drawn open criticism from some Republicans.

Mr. Cassidy, who lost last month’s Louisiana primary to two challengers aligned with Mr. Trump, has proposed a series of amendments, including one that would invalidate Mr. Trump’s agreement with the Internal Revenue Service that protects him from tax audits.

How much do doctors earn? That’s why it’s the highest paying job in America.

0

play

Question: What are the top 20 highest paying jobs in America?

Answer: Dr.

That’s not far from the truth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 19 of the 20 occupations with the highest average wages in the United States are some type of doctor or dentist.

Pediatric surgeons will earn an average annual salary of $450,810 in 2024, according to federal data. Cardiologists earn $432,490. Orthopedic surgeons receive $365,060.

Of the top 20 highest-paying professions, only one is not a doctor (or dentist), and it’s at the bottom of the list. The 20th highest paying job in America is being an airline pilot. The average salary for pilots, co-pilots, and flight engineers is $226,600.

Physicians earn more than other broad categories of workers and more than engineers, according to federal data. More than just a computer scientist. More than a lawyer.

Economists say you have to drill down to elite subcategories such as corporate CEOs and legal partners to find groups that earn more than doctors. The average partner at a large firm earns more than $1.4 million annually. A typical S&P 500 CEO set aside $17 million in 2024, according to a study by Equilar and The Associated Press.

American doctors earn so much money that a group of economic researchers spent years trying to figure out why.

This is what they found.

lots of school, lots of time

As any medical school applicant knows, you have to study for a very long time to become a doctor. Years of training in college, medical school, and graduate school.

And the business hours are long. According to the researchers, a typical doctor’s work week ranges from more than 40 hours to more than 60 hours, depending on the specialty.

“Jobs involve a lot of training and long hours, which naturally leads to higher incomes,” said Joshua Gottlieb, an economist at the University of Chicago who worked on the study.

Researchers found that among medical professions, doctors tend to earn more in specialties that require more training and longer hours. For example, each additional year of training increases your annual income by $143,000.

But education and working hours don’t tell the whole story. Farmers and ranchers work long hours and don’t earn doctors’ salaries, according to old federal reports.

As for training, many of Gottlieb’s own academic colleagues have spent as many years in school as doctors. And most professors earn less than $100,000 a year.

“My brother is an emergency room doctor, and I’ve been in school longer than him,” Teresa Ghilarducci, an economist at the New School for Social Research in New York, told USA TODAY in 2024. She was not involved in the study cited above.

doctors like money

The researchers’ comments prompted a backlash from doctors, who found that they wanted higher-paying jobs.

Researchers reported in a 2024 paper that doctors from the best medical schools cluster in the highest-paying specialties. Physicians also prefer procedures that provide more benefit.

Some medical specialties pay eye-poppingly high salaries. According to the researchers, the highest salaries for doctors during their peak earning years (ages 40 to 55) are as follows: This number is from 2017, so it may be higher now.

  • Neurosurgery: $920,500
  • Orthopedics: $788,600
  • Dermatology: $655,200
  • Heart surgery: $607,300
  • Ophthalmology: $597,000

As with salary-oriented workers in any field, Gottlieb said, “We see people gravitate towards specialized fields that pay more.” “I think that’s the human way.”

Maria Poliakova, an associate professor at Stanford School of Medicine, also joined Gottlieb’s research. She points out that medical school graduates tend to be bright students with many career options.

“In most cases, they are among the top students in the country and could have pursued other opportunities that paid well as well,” she says.

In a statement to USA TODAY, the American Medical Association noted that doctors often spend 12 to 15 years in training and typically graduate medical school with about $200,000 in debt. A higher salary can help you get out of debt and get back to work after years off.

not enough doctors

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United States has fewer doctors per capita than most other developed countries: 2.7 per 1,000 potential patients as of 2022, compared with 3.8 in France and 4.6 in Germany.

Researchers say a big reason for this is that the medical industry and the federal government have put a lid on the number of medical schools and residents in hospitals in the United States.

The shortage stems from a time when medical industry leaders believed there were too many doctors in the United States. Ironically, the same group is now warning of a shortage of doctors.

The AMA said its change in attitude reflects the evolution of the industry, noting that the current physician population is aging and dealing with burnout.

“It’s like an artificial limit on the supply of doctors,” said Andrew Biggs, a senior fellow at the libertarian group American Enterprise Institute. Andrew Biggs did not join Poliakova and Gottlieb in their study of doctors.

“This is what economists call a barrier to entry,” he said, which he said drives up doctors’ salaries.

The AMA “acts like a physician union” by limiting the number of physicians, Biggs said. “The important thing is to keep salaries high.”

government sets prices

Researchers say one of the fundamental reasons why doctors earn more is because of the high cost of medical care. And those prices are largely determined by the federal government.

Medicare, the federal insurance program, sets the prices for health care services. Prices are so high that medical expenses account for 18% of gross domestic product.

“Governments and policies have decided to devote a very large proportion of society’s resources to health care,” Gottlieb said.

Customers, or patients, have little say in their healthcare costs.

“It’s not like comparing surgeons’ fees,” Biggs said.

Economists say this structure makes the health care sector nearly unique among American industries.

“In some ways, the health care industry is like a defense contractor,” Ghilarducci says. “Their main customer, the federal government, has deep pockets.”

Behind President Trump’s economic stranglehold that is driving Cuba into collapse

0

play

  • New sanctions freeze U.S. assets of foreign companies and individuals doing business with the Cuban government.
  • These policies have resulted in severe shortages of food, medicine, and fuel on the island.

WASHINGTON – Complete economic and humanitarian strangulation, or Cuba’s death spiral, appears to be the latest tactic in the 67-year-old U.S. effort to overthrow the island nation’s communist government.

First, the Trump administration has hammered out far-reaching economic deals to open up tourism, attract investment, and perhaps settle long-simmering Cuban-American reparations claims. It then prepared a series of covert military options, including snatch-and-snap-style maneuvers reminiscent of the U.S. arrest of former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro.

Now the plan appears to be falling apart in painful, slow motion.

After months of escalating pressure on Cuba, President Donald Trump appears poised to force the communist regime into political and economic capitulation, according to officials familiar with the administration’s thinking on the Caribbean island, veteran Cuba watchers and some Cuban diplomats who have been trying to piece together vague but ultimately threatening signals from Washington.

An executive order freezing the U.S. assets of foreign companies and individuals doing business with the Cuban regime will go into effect on June 5th. On June 4, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and his immediate family, as well as former leader Raul Castro’s son and Interior Ministry official Alejandro Castro Espin, and his grandson Raul Alejandro Castro Calis.

Officials close to the White House, who could not speak publicly, said that without military involvement, the economic squeeze could quickly bring down Cuba’s regime.

Victoria Coates, a former vice presidential national security adviser and administration aide, said it’s all part of a process the Trump administration expects could take as long as a year to unfold.

Coats added that President Trump’s threat of military force is real. “But that doesn’t mean it should be your first resort.”

Exclusive: Pentagon ramps up plans for possible military operation in Cuba

Ismara Vargas Walter, Cuba’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in an interview with USA TODAY that the U.S. strategy toward Cuba, while “multidimensional,” appears to be aimed at “suffocating” the island into submission.

“This is not a regular conflict. It is completely politically motivated. It is a systematic strangulation policy,” she said. “Every aspect of daily life in Cuba is being affected, from not being able to refrigerate food to not being able to access education, from lack of medicine to water rationing. You name it. It’s really, really difficult.”

The Trump administration said the choice faced with Cuba was clear. The administration can strike a deal or the United States will continue to bombard businesses, institutions, and the island’s elites with economically damaging sanctions.

“Cubans are really, really, really good at taking down drugs. They’ve been doing it for 60 years. They just delay, delay, delay, delay,” said Pedro Freire, a lawyer who advises U.S.-based companies on doing business with Cuba. “The government is saying it won’t work.”

Indeed, Cuba was in the midst of a perfect humanitarian storm when President Trump gave Secretary of State Marco Rubio broad powers to paralyze Cuba’s ruling class with sanctions.

Cuba has been unable to import oil since January due to a naval blockade and other restrictions imposed by the Trump administration. Energy shortages and power outages occur frequently. Hospitals have been forced to suspend non-emergency operations. Food and daily necessities are decreasing.

Exclusive audio: After U.S.-Cuba talks, Cuban prisoners are given an ultimatum

The United States has announced its readiness to provide $100 million in humanitarian aid to Cuba. Rubio made the offer on May 13 during a visit to the Vatican and Italy.

However, this support comes with conditions. Neither the Cuban government nor the military would be allowed to oversee its distribution. Instead, aid should be channeled through humanitarian, faith-based organizations such as Caritas, the Catholic Church’s global relief network, and other nonprofit organizations.

Small potato, chicken container: Catholic Church warns Cuba

While this proposed deal reflects the U.S. government’s stated intention to assist the Cuban people, it also makes clear that it does not trust the Cuban government’s ability, or even willingness, to manage and distribute aid.

Rubio told lawmakers on June 2 that the Cuban government was ready to accept aid, but said there were no plans to distribute it. The money never changed hands.

Cuba’s top diplomat in Britain said there was no recent information on the allocation of this aid. She referred USA TODAY reporters to earlier comments made on the subject by Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla. Parrilla said Cuba, in principle, does not refuse foreign aid provided in good faith.

Many factors appear to be influencing President Trump’s Cuba policy, but the ultimate outcome is unclear. He often talks about Cuba’s economic and commercial potential, as well as other places around the world that have used the U.S. military.

President Trump also appears to want the Cuban government to be more compliant with his demands in general.

“All we want is a well-run country that can feed its people,” President Trump told USA TODAY on June 4.

President Trump said Cuba was “kind of collapsing” and that the United States would follow Iran’s lead in dealing with it. “We have some very good plans for Cuba,” he added.

The United States has developed a strategy for how to respond if Cuba collapses, two sources familiar with the matter told USA TODAY. The plan, which has been in existence for decades, includes economic, judicial and governance reforms.

President Trump promotes “friendly takeovers”: Inside Marco Rubio’s Cuba Gambling

Since the Cuban Revolution in 1959, every U.S. president, Democratic or Republican, has called for leadership change in the Cold War adversary, located just 90 miles from mainland America. The current White House is no exception.

On May 20, the Justice Department indicted former Cuban President Raul Castro on multiple charges, including conspiracy to murder American citizens in connection with the shooting down of a US military plane 30 years ago, gradually increasing pressure on the regime.

Shortly before indicting Venezuela’s Maduro, the United States sent special forces to capture and track down Maduro and his wife.

Sanctions on foreign investors in Cuba on June 5 could also accelerate this process.

Major companies such as Spanish hotel chains Melia and Iberostar have restricted their operations on the island.

“Unless something changes, no company is going to invest in Cuba. That’s it. It’s over. It’s just a matter of time,” said Rick Herrero, executive director of the Cuba Study Group, a Washington-based nonprofit policy and advocacy group.

Walter, Cuba’s ambassador to the UK, said Cubans were surviving on meager meals, in some cases as little as one meal a day. They ration food, collect rainwater for bathing and drinking water, and cook with coal because there is no oil.

With the U.S. squeeze on Cuba showing little sign of easing, Rubio, the Trump administration’s top diplomat who was born in Cuban exile in Florida, told a hearing on June 2 that he still did not believe Cuba’s system could be reformed unless new leadership took over.

“Or a new way of thinking may take hold,” he added.

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurs off the coast of California, followed by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.

play

  • On Thursday, June 4, a series of earthquakes occurred off the west coast, including one with a magnitude of 5.7.
  • The quake occurred near the Mendocino Triple Junction, a highly earthquake-prone region where three plates meet.
  • There are no tsunami threats or significant damage reported from offshore seismic activity.
  • California has more than 500 active faults, but scientists can’t predict when an earthquake will occur.

A series of moderate earthquakes rattled waters off the West Coast early Thursday morning, June 4, near the Mendocino Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates meet off the coast of Northern California, one of the most seismically active regions in the United States.

Those included a magnitude 5.7 earthquake off the coast about 190 miles from McKinleyville and a magnitude 5.1 earthquake west of Petrolia, but no tsunami threat or significant damage was reported.

The strongest earthquake occurred just before 4 a.m. Pacific time west-southwest of Pistol River, Oregon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About two hours later, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck about 40 miles west of Petrolia in Humboldt County. Minutes after the earthquake in the Petrolia area, a magnitude 4.5 aftershock occurred in approximately the same location.

Was there an earthquake today? What about a tsunami?

Preliminary data from the USGS showed that the Petrolia earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth beneath the ocean floor.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warnings, advisories, watches or threats were issued after the quake. USGS impact estimates also indicate that significant damage is unlikely.

Type of earthquake

According to the United Nations, there are four types of earthquakes.

  • Crustal earthquake
  • volcanic earthquake
  • collapse earthquake
  • explosion earthquake

What causes earthquakes?

The Earth has four layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The crust and the upper part of the mantle make up a separate region called the lithosphere, which acts like a skin around the Earth’s surface.

However, according to the USGS, the lithosphere is not a single piece, but exists like a puzzle or a series of pieces. These parts of the lithosphere are not stationary and move slowly. These are called “tectonic plates.”

As tectonic plates move and move with each other, they sometimes bump into each other or collide. This places stress on the edges of the plate. If the stress becomes too great, a crack called a “fault” will form. The points where these faults meet each other are called “fault lines.”

When the friction between faults is too great, energy is suddenly released, causing seismic waves and causing earthquakes.

Can earthquakes be predicted?

Earthquakes cannot be predicted. Neither the U.S. Geological Survey nor scientists are predicting major earthquakes, and there is no expectation that will change in the near future.

Are earthquakes increasing?

Although it may appear that earthquakes are occurring more frequently, especially due to real-time warnings and widespread media coverage, the overall incidence of earthquakes remains relatively stable over time.

Any year can appear more active because of improved technology that allows scientists to detect more small earthquakes than ever before, but not because there are actually more earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to long-term world records dating back to 1900, the Earth experiences an average of about 16 large earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 or higher) each year, with 15 typically in the 7.0 range and one magnitude 8.0 or higher. In 2024, there were 10 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher, with the strongest being a magnitude 7.5 in Japan.

However, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a 2023 report that the risk of being affected by an earthquake is increasing due to increased human and economic exposure and the number of properties being built in high-earthquake-risk areas.

Will President Trump’s $1.8 billion fund really end? legal battle continues

0

President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about the fate of the taxpayer-funded initiative, which could have paid out to those who assaulted police during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

play

WASHINGTON – The legal battle over the Trump administration’s proposed $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund continues, with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche saying the Justice Department will not move forward with administering the fund, but may defend against multiple lawsuits in court.

On June 5, the Justice Department is scheduled to file its response to a lawsuit filed by a federal judge in Virginia that temporarily blocked the funds.

“Despite what we’re doing in these cases, defending our rights and trying to make sure our rights are protected, we’re not going to move forward with the fund,” Blanche said at a June 2 Congressional hearing.

President Donald Trump himself has been confused as to whether the taxpayer-funded effort, which could have paid off those who assaulted police during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, is really over. In comments to reporters from the Oval Office on June 3, he said he didn’t know if the fund had been abolished or was simply put on hold, but he also referred to it in the past tense.

“I’ll have to ask my lawyer, but I don’t know,” Trump said. “As far as I’m concerned, the Weaponization Fund has been great.”

Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) jointly wrote in a June 3 court document to the judge who suspended the fund that it was an illegal attempt to circumvent Congress and potentially fund violent insurrectionists. They said even if the Justice Department canceled the funds now, it could pursue them later.

“The Anti-Weaponization Fund presents a threat to our constitutional democracy that this court has never been asked to confront,” the senators wrote.

“Less than a week after the Department of Justice announced the fund, the defendants who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, began lining up for their share,” they added.

The lawsuit was filed by several plaintiffs, including a former federal prosecutor for crimes committed during the Jan. 6 attack.

How did the fund come about?

The Justice Department announced the creation of the fund as part of a $10 billion settlement of a lawsuit brought by Trump and his two oldest sons against the Internal Revenue Service for failing to protect their tax returns. The contractor leaked tax return information from 2019 to 2020, along with that of hundreds of thousands of other taxpayers.

Later, Justice Department lawyers and lawyers for Trump and his two sons settled the case, agreeing for the government to establish a fund and relieve the family of any previous tax liability.

Both the fund and the tax portion of the settlement have drawn protests from government watchdogs. The New York Times reported in 2020 that President Trump is engaged in a decade-long audit battle with the IRS over his $72.9 million tax refund claim. Losing the battle could cost the company more than $100 million, according to the Times.

Other challenges to the fund

The Justice Department faces numerous other legal and political challenges to the fund.

Capitol Police officers have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., over the initiative, arguing that the fund could further embolden people already facing harassment and death threats.

A former Department of Veterans Affairs employee has filed a lawsuit in federal court in California, saying he was targeted by the Trump administration for political speech and has an interest in ensuring that funds are limited to the true victims of improper weaponization.

In addition, 35 former federal judges asked the Miami federal judge who closed Trump’s case against the IRS to reopen the case. They said in court filings that the government had fought “nearly identical claims” filed by others against the Internal Revenue Service, and that the disparate treatment of Mr. Trump showed the settlement was inappropriate.

The judge in the case has given Trump until June 12 to respond to allegations that he improperly colluded with the Justice Department. Today is the day the Justice Department will hold a hearing in the Virginia case, which could determine whether the fund will be legally blocked for an extended period of time as litigation continues.

Blanche said the Justice Department would not move forward with administering the fund, even though it may continue to defend it in court, following pushback from Senate Republicans who said they would not pass an immigration enforcement spending bill until the fund was limited or eliminated.

NBA investigates fans who targeted Knicks’ Jalen Brunson during games

The NBA will investigate the actions of a fan who allegedly sat courtside at San Antonio’s Frostbank Center and directed profanities at New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, NBA’s Chris Haynes reports on Prime and NBATV.

The paper said the comment was about Brunson’s “failure” and that Brunson, who scored 30 points in the 105-95 win, met with official Scott Foster after the game to discuss the fan’s comments.

The NBA’s Code of Conduct clearly outlines the behaviors that fans must follow when attending games.

“Guests may enjoy the basketball experience without engaging in or engaging in any form of profanity, abusive language, gambling-related or other harassment of players or other game participants, or lewd behavior,” the rules read in part.

Penalties for fan misconduct at NBA games are severe. The code of conduct states that anyone who violates this could face “ejection without refund, cancellation of season tickets and/or ban from attending future matches.” You may also violate local ordinances, resulting in arrest and prosecution.

Aaron Judge’s injury schedule revealed by Yankees in latest update

play

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday, June 4, that Aaron Judge will be sidelined at least until the All-Star break after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right first rib.

Judge, a three-time American League MVP, has undergone significant testing since his last appearance in a game on May 31st. The club announced on Thursday that his test results would be reviewed by a thoracic outlet syndrome specialist, and the announcement of a rib fracture came hours later.

The Yankees announced that Judge’s injury will require a period of “rest and limited activity,” and that Judge will undergo re-examination in four to six weeks. The only timeline the club offered was that Judge was “expected to return sometime this season.”

It’s unclear whether the stress fracture will ultimately require rib removal, and Judge will likely miss the remainder of the season if surgery is required. Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with airborne TOS and had his ribs removed last September. He did not pitch in a regular season game until April 25.

Judge, 34, led the majors last season with a batting average of .331, an on-base percentage of .457, and a slugging percentage of .688, hitting 53 home runs and winning his second straight AL MVP award. He got off to a similarly strong start this season, hitting 17 home runs in 59 games, but his .907 OPS (while still elite) is nowhere near his 1.144 pace in 2025.

Negative judge: The Yankees lost two of three games to the Cleveland Guardians. They started Jose Caballero in right field for the first two games of the series, but then moved Caballero to shortstop, benched Anthony Volpe, and started Max Schumann in right field. It’s virtually impossible to replace Judge, and the severity of Judge’s injury and length of his absence could determine how much offensive reinforcements are sought before the August trade deadline.

New York enters the weekend with a 37-25 record, half a game behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.

President Donald Trump unveils ‘Trump Promenade’ at Lincoln Memorial

play

President Donald Trump announced on June 4th at a White House event that he intends to build a boardwalk behind the Lincoln Memorial.

“They want to call it the Trump Promenade, and I don’t know if they want to, but I think it’s going to be beautiful,” Trump said.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the boardwalk, which would connect the back of the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River, was part of the McMillian Plan, an early 20th century plan for the National Mall.

He added that the proposed boardwalk footbridge would take visitors “right to the water’s edge.”

“Right now, it’s closed to pedestrians,” Burkum said. “People come from all over the world and they don’t know that there’s a beautiful Potomac River 100 meters away.”

The announced boardwalk is the latest in a series of construction projects undertaken by President Trump, an effort to reshape the look of the nation’s capital.

During the event, he touted a proposed 250-foot arch in the Memorial Avenue corridor, which prompted a lawsuit and public backlash.

President Trump said of the arch: “This is a real bow, a beautiful bow to the military and military victory.” “No one has achieved more military victories than us, including recently.”

He also demolished the East Wing of the White House to make room for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

Congress has not approved building the memorial arch on federal land managed by the National Park Service, but the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen argues it is a legally required first step before the government moves forward with construction. President Trump also did not seek Congressional approval to begin construction on the banquet hall, a fact that is being challenged in court.

Texas wins back-to-back WCWS titles with overwhelming victory over Texas Tech

0

play

No other national champion other than the University of Oklahoma has won back-to-back titles in the Women’s College World Series in over 10 years.

No. 2 Texas ended that drought Thursday at Devon Park.

With Texas Tech shortstop Haley Toney’s heartbreaking two-run error in the fifth inning and slow pitching from Citoralee Gutierrez and Teagan Caban, the Longhorns defeated No. 11 Texas Tech 4-1 in the second game of the program’s second best-of-three national championship. Both were against Nyjari Canady and the Red Raiders.

Cabán took the mound in relief of Gutierrez in the sixth inning. Last year’s WCWS Player of the Year, she had a combined 11 strikeouts in two games in the Championship Series, including a complete game in Game 1. The Longhorns gave her two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning: Cayden Henry’s solo home run and LeeAnne Good’s single to right field off the glove of Lauren Allred.

The Des Moines, Iowa, native was recognized for her work in the circle this postseason, making her the first consecutive MOP in WCWS history. Kavan pitched 33 1/3 innings with 30 strikeouts last week in Oklahoma City.

The Longhorns become the fifth Division I softball program to win back-to-back national championships at the Women’s College World Series, and the first team outside of Oklahoma to accomplish that feat in more than a decade.

Here’s what you need to know about the winner of the WCWS Championship Series between Texas and Texas Tech, including box scores, stats and highlights.

Who won WCWS 2026?

Texas won the WCWS Championship Series for the second consecutive season, this time winning in just two games.

In latest blow to President Trump on foreign policy, House passes aid to Ukraine

0

Just one day after the House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at ending the war with Iran, 18 Republicans sided with Democrats.

play

The House of Representatives again overrode proposals from Republican leaders to pass legislation approving billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia.

The Ukraine Assistance Act was passed on Thursday, June 4, after 18 Republicans sided with Democrats. The vote was 226-195.

Although the bill has little chance of becoming law, it is yet another rebuke from Republicans in Congress of President Donald Trump’s foreign policy approach. The day before, the House of Representatives took a largely symbolic vote in favor of ending the Iran war (and the Senate recently advanced a similar measure).

Repeated condemnations by Congress of the White House’s overseas strategy have increasingly become a political liability for Republicans in a year of midterm elections that will affect President Trump’s remaining second term.

The Ukraine Assistance Act, proposed by New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, passed the House of Representatives only because Republicans supported Democrats in a once-unusual legislative trick: crossing the aisle to force the bill to a vote. This mechanism, known as a “dismissal petition,” has historically been rarely used, but is becoming increasingly common in the 119th Congress, which has a razor-thin Republican majority.

Buc-ee is adding a travel center to the state. See list of upcoming jobs

Convenience megastore Buc-ee’s plans to open a new location in Northeast Ohio after the company pledged to cover $15 million in infrastructure needed to get up and running.

Buc-ee’s, a chain of convenience stores, gas stations and megamarts known for its large, clean bathrooms and beaver mascot, said its Mansfield, Ohio, store is one of more than a dozen it is considering opening over the next few years, according to the USA TODAY Network’s Mansfield News Journal.

Here’s what you need to know about the deal and where the Buc-ee’s go next.

Buc-ee promises to cover costs as part of deal

On June 2, the Mansfield City Council unanimously approved plans to develop a new Buc-ee’s Travel Center in Richland County, Ohio, approximately midway between Columbus and Cleveland.

The plan was approved after Buc-ee’s promised to cover the necessary infrastructure costs, which are expected to cost $15 million, according to the Mansfield News Journal.

“They’re paying all the money upfront for the infrastructure,” Greg Daniels, outside counsel for the development agreement, told the outlet. “They are paying the full amount up front and out of pocket, and it will be paid back in turn through sales tax.”

The deal is part of the New Community Authority, which Daniels said is common in the Columbus area.

Ohio’s new community authorities are public-private partnerships that allow cities, counties, and developers to share the cost of building public infrastructure within defined districts.

Daniels said the sales tax surcharge applies to items that do not include fuel. 2%, of which 1.75% will be donated to Buc-ee’s, which is expected to be recovered in 20 years. An additional 0.25% will be reinvested in infrastructure projects across the region.

“We worked a lot with Buc-ee’s. They were really collaborative,” Daniels said. “We’re very pleased with the results. I think this is a great example of public-private partnership.”

The project is expected to break ground in the first quarter of 2028, but that is subject to change.

More than a truck stop

Buc-ee’s was founded in 1982 and has since expanded to more than 50 locations across 12 states, with the majority of its stores located in Texas.

The company sees itself as more than your average truck stop or roadside convenience store.

“First and foremost, we are not a truck stop. We want to be known as a family-centered travel center,” Angela Janik, who oversees project coordination and development for Buc-ee, told the Mansfield City Council. “We’ve essentially turned the industry upside down. We’re more of a multi-purpose stop than a convenience stop.”

Buc-ee’s expansion plans through 2031

Mansfield isn’t the only U.S. city to introduce new Buc-ee’s this year.

Buc-ee media coordinator Crissy Gonzales previously confirmed the opening dates for the following locations in an email to USA TODAY:

  • Goodyear, Arizona: June 22nd
  • San Marcos, Texas: July 27th
  • Benton, AR: August 17th

She added that the Murfreesboro, Tenn., store is scheduled to open Nov. 16.

The company’s contact page says several more locations will open by 2031.

  • Kansas City, Kansas
  • Gallaway, Tennessee
  • St. Lucie, Florida

Donald Trump says Joe Biden was ‘fine’ during post-election meeting

0

play

President Donald Trump on June 4 reiterated his criticism of Biden’s debate performance, but said former President Joe Biden showed no signs of cognitive decline when they met after the 2024 election.

That debate, now being revisited in a new memoir and recent interviews by former first lady Jill Biden, continues to shape the public narrative surrounding Biden’s final year in office. She writes in “A View from the East Wing” that the president “lost his essence” that night, but notes that no aides expressed concern about the president’s condition beforehand.

Joe Biden was “the same person I’ve seen in a long time,” Trump said, adding, “I saw him 40 years ago, 30 years ago.”

President Trump said Joe Biden “was never a smart guy” and “wasn’t as sharp as a tackle.”

President Trump said “something happened” to Joe Biden during the debate, adding: “It could have been me.”

“The question is, did he do something bad because he choked, or did he do something bad because he didn’t choke? But he didn’t have a good night,” Trump said.

Jill Biden talks about the impact of the debate

The former first lady also said that after the debate, Joe Biden asked her, “You got really annoyed, didn’t you?” To which she replied, “Yes, that’s right.”

Appearing on “The View” on June 2, she said that no one on her staff had raised concerns about her husband’s health before the debate.

“When I saw that, when all Americans saw that moment on television during the debate, I was scared out of my mind because I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke.’

Biden’s performance in the debate was a defining moment for the 2024 campaign. Within weeks, he announced he would not seek re-election, paving the way for former Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Trump in the general election.

The Republicans who voted against President Trump on Iran’s involvement in the war are as follows:

0

The House of Representatives voted 215-208 to end U.S. involvement in the Iran war.

The June 3 vote was largely symbolic, marking a new period of Congressional anxiety over the Middle East conflict as peace talks stall. Strikes in the region have continued in recent days, despite the White House’s assurances to lawmakers that hostilities have ended.

Four Republicans joined together to support a Democratic resolution that would reaffirm the Legislature’s war powers and block further military action. The defectors were Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

Massey, a member of the same party but known as a political opponent of President Trump, wrote online: “The House of People is sending a message: Stop this war.”

The president wasted no time bashing Massey and three other Republicans, calling them “bad Republicans” in a social media post the morning after the vote.

“Who would do such an unpatriotic thing?” he wrote. “They know the current state of negotiations.”

One Democratic lawmaker, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against it but supported the bill.

After the Senate introduced a similar bill two weeks ago, seven House members (six Republicans and one Democrat) did not vote.

“Today, House Democrats, on behalf of the American people, successfully passed the War Powers Resolution to hold Donald Trump accountable,” top House Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, said in a statement. “It’s time for Senate Republicans to do the right thing.”

Earlier in the day, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson continued to support the president’s Iran military campaign despite misgivings within his own party.

“We are trying to prevent the largest sponsor of state terrorism from acquiring nuclear weapons,” the president said. “The commander-in-chief’s first responsibility is to keep the country safe. He has done that. He has proven that every day.”

Tired of the Google AI overview? Users are experimenting with different search engines

0

play

Google is changing, and some users want a search engine that reminds them of the “good old days.”

On May 19, Google announced its “biggest update” to its search bar in more than 25 years: the addition of artificial intelligence features. While classic Google Search isn’t going away, the tech giant has rolled out several new updates to Google Search AI mode, including more natural chatbot conversations, the introduction of an AI personal assistant, and improved online booking features. While Google touts the feature, some users interested in searching the internet without AI are turning to alternative search engines.

Competitors also say they are seeing an increase in users following Google’s updates.

DuckDuckGo, a search engine that facilitates privacy-protected searches, has seen an increase in downloads since Google’s May 19 announcement.

On June 1, DuckDuckGo’s search traffic hit an all-time high, with U.S. installs peaking for the week of June 1, up 76% from the week of May 12 (prior to Google’s announcement), DuckDuckGo’s chief communications and policy officer Kamil Buzzbaz told USA TODAY. Bazbaz did not elaborate on the engine’s search traffic records, but said that on average, DuckDuckGo receives more than 110 million searches per day.

Germany-based search engine Ecosia is also seeing increased usage. Christian Kroll, CEO and founder of Ecosia, told USA TODAY in an email that searches for Ecosia have increased nearly 40% in the past two weeks and installations have more than doubled.

“We’re seeing a clear sentiment that people don’t want AI to be an option anymore, and that’s reflected in the numbers,” Kroll said. “They are fleeing Big Tech and seeking alternatives that align with their values.”

Increased use of Google web filters

Although there are many alternative search engines, the use of web filters created by Google is also increasing. When Google announced its AI Overview in 2024, it created a web filter that users could add to the end of a Google search URL to view Google search results. without it Introduction to AI. The web filter is a text string, “&udm=14”.

Shortly after the web filter was secretly released, technology writer Ernie Smith created a web page for it, udm14.com. When searching on Smith’s web page, the filter is automatically added to the search without the user having to manually add the filter to the end of the search URL.

Smith told USA TODAY that the week of May 25 was the website’s busiest week, with about 70,000 visitors. For comparison, Smith said udm14.com receives about 40,000 to 50,000 visitors most weeks (though its highest number of visitors was 130,000 when it launched in 2024).

“It’s really, really gratifying to see Wikipedia appear in the first few listings,” content creator Mike Newins said on Instagram Reels, explaining why he made the switch to UDM14.

How has Google search changed?

Despite all the noise about the Google Search update, not much has actually changed. The classic Google search experience still exists, where users enter a question or keyword and are presented with a list of blue links to various websites. Most of the changes are to Google Search AI mode, which users must turn on to use.

Why are people leaving Google and switching search engines?

As AI chatbots become more sophisticated and platforms like Google continue to integrate the technology, some people are looking for ways to distance themselves from the technology.

In a comment on a recent TikTok video talking about the move to DuckDuckGo, content creator Allie Meeks answered why the addition of AI capabilities led her to move away from Google.

Meeks answered, “This is because generative AI has a large negative impact on the environment.” “There are three data centers being built near me that will impact water quality, raise temperatures, cause severe noise pollution, and impact local farmers. That’s something I don’t want to be involved in or support.”

With more than 4,300 data centers operating across the United States, environmentalists and anti-AI activists say these computing facilities waste energy and water resources, pollute the air, create noise for nearby residents, and create a disproportionate number of temporary jobs.

Kroll said companies like Ecosia are also noticing increased interest in the ability to turn off AI capabilities.

As of the latest update, there is no way for Google users to turn off Google AI Overview without taking additional steps, such as using the web filter &udm=14.

Engines like DuckDuckGo and Ecosia provide AI summaries, but both allow users to turn off AI summaries in the engine’s settings. DuckDuckGo also allows users to turn off the ability to display AI-generated images. Another search engine, Startpage, works similarly and allows users to toggle AI features on and off.

While some online users may jump at it, a Google search will lead you nowhere. When asked to respond to the backlash, a Google spokesperson cited a blog post from Google’s vice president of search, Elizabeth Reid, announcing the change.

“People are realizing how much more they can accomplish with search and are searching more than ever before, so much so that queries reached an all-time high last quarter,” Reid wrote.

How to switch to search engine

Trying out a new search engine is very easy. Before using a new search engine, users can test the search engine by visiting a website. For example, if you use the Google Chrome browser, you can still visit DuckDuckGo.com and search on the platform.

However, perhaps the best way to use a search engine is to download it to your device via your desktop or smartphone, similar to how you download Google Chrome or Firefox. Although it may sound counterintuitive, users can also change their default browser in Google Chrome.

To change your default browser in Google Chrome, click the three dots in the upper-right corner, then click (Settings). On the left side of the settings menu, click Search Engine. Select Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, or Yandex as the default.

On smartphones, users can also change the default browser in the phone’s settings.

iPhone users using Safari can search for Safari in the Settings app, click on (Search Engines), and choose from Google, Yahoo, Bing, Baidu, DuckDuckGo, Sogou, 360 Search, and Ecosia.

Although the Android operating system is owned by Google, users can still change their default browser. Open the Google Chrome app and click (Settings) then (Search Engine). Select Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, or Yandex as the default.

Staff at the Kennedy Center have been told they have until June 12 to remove Trump’s name.

WASHINGTON — Lawyers for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have directed center officials to remove signs and other materials with President Donald Trump’s name in the facility’s title by June 12 to comply with a judge’s order.

In a June 4 memo obtained by USA TODAY, the center’s lawyers instructed employees to immediately change their email signatures, letterhead and other documents to reflect the name “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or “Kennedy Center.”

The memo says other changes to signage, templates, forms, brochures and website pages, such as removing Trump’s name from the building’s facade, must be completed by Friday, June 12 at the latest.

The memo follows a May 29 opinion by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordering Trump’s name to be removed from the Kennedy Center’s ownership within 14 days, including removing signs and removing Trump’s name from all official materials. A judge ruled that the president’s name was illegally added to the center.

The Trump administration said it would appeal the ruling, but shortly after the ruling Trump announced plans to transfer control of the center to Congress.

“We are complying with the court’s order and evaluating all legal options to maintain this activation and recognize President Trump’s leadership,” Roman Daravi, the center’s vice president of communications, said in a statement.

In December, the center’s board of directors voted to change the name of the Kennedy Center to the Trump Kennedy Center. Less than 24 hours after the action, a new sign was installed on the outside of the building reading “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center.”

Cooper, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, said the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which is made up mostly of Trump supporters, is violating a 1964 federal law that established the center to honor the 35th president, which makes clear that “the Kennedy Center must be named for and is intended to honor only President Kennedy.”

Kennedy Center ‘considering options’ after judge blocks closure for two years

In his ruling, Cooper also overturned President Trump’s plan to close the Kennedy Center for two years, scheduled to begin in July, to accommodate major renovations to the building.

Lawyers for the center argued in a memo that while the judge did not rule against the concept of temporarily closing the center, the board’s vote was “improper and a subsequent vote should consider more information.”

“The court did not rule that the center must remain open during the renovation, nor did it require that the center present any specific programs on-site during the renovation,” the memo to Kennedy Center staff said. “The Center is considering its options and will provide further guidance in the near future.”

The closure was approved by the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees in a March vote. In a 94-page opinion, Cooper questioned the reliability of the center’s executive director, Matt Floca,’s conclusion that renovations cannot be made without shutting down public facilities.

The judge also said the center’s board had “no meaningful say” on the issue when it voted to close on March 16. President Trump had already announced his closure plans on Truth Social on February 1st.

RFK Jr.’s Department of Health and Human Services wants Americans’ medical records. why?

0

The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking access to Americans’ medical records, but says the effort is not aimed at investigating links between vaccines and autism.

In a June 4 statement to USA TODAY, an HHS spokesperson said the Department of Health is “strengthening public health surveillance and modernizing data systems to better understand and combat the epidemic of childhood chronic diseases as part of Secretary[Robert F.]Kennedy’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ agenda. Americans need a robust system to monitor the causes of chronic diseases.”

The statement came after KFF Health News reported that Secretary of Health Kennedy was tracking these records to study the link between vaccines and autism. The World Health Organization and other trusted health organizations around the world have repeatedly stated that evidence shows that vaccines do not cause autism.

Funding for the effort had already been allocated through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. The initiative is not evidence of a national patient database or master patient index, the sources added.

Autism has long been a major concern for Kennedy. Immediately after taking over as health secretary, he said he intended to find out the cause by his first September in office. The deadline has since passed, but many scientists and autism advocates were quick to cast skepticism on the idea anyway, saying it oversimplified a very complex problem.

Last year, HHS denied it was planning an autism registry after the National Institutes of Health appeared to share plans for one. According to a report by CBS News, NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharyya shared an effort to potentially create a “disease registry” to study autism during a presentation on the NIH division’s vision at the April 21, 2025, Council meeting. On April 25, HHS officials told USA TODAY that no such registry has been created.

The registry was conceived as part of an effort to build a “real-world data platform” that would gather information from the public and private sectors to support research, HHS officials told USA TODAY at the time. The official did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions about other disease registries or the use of nonpublic health data.
