Differences between Kansas and Missouri show the importance of initiative process

0

As partisan gerrymandering makes it difficult for some state legislatures to reflect the will of the people, people are turning to direct democracy to enact popular policies that their representatives don’t want. Lawmakers who have protected themselves from electoral defeat have less incentive to care about the will of the people across the state, and a majority of the people may refuse to pass legislation that favors the state. What can the people of these gerrymandered states do when their elected officials ignore the will of the people?

A closer look at Missouri and Kansas, neighboring states with vastly different approaches to direct democracy, highlights the growing importance of the initiative process as a counterbalance to unresponsive legislatures. Citizen-initiated voting systems, which exist in just over half of states, allow citizens to submit proposed state constitutional amendments or statutory provisions to voters. Both Missouri and Kansas have only recently legalized marijuana, legalized state-protected reproductive rights, and expanded eligibility for Medicaid, the publicly funded health insurance program. Today, Missourians enjoy all three thanks to the citizen-driven initiative process enshrined in the Missouri Constitution. By contrast, Kansas remains among the few states that have not legalized marijuana or expanded Medicaid. (Kansas has protected reproductive rights through important Kansas Supreme Court decisions, but the Legislature has repeatedly attempted to limit or overturn reproductive rights through statutes and the legislatively controlled constitutional amendment process.)

The Missouri Constitution explicitly gives the people the power to propose and veto legislation and constitutional amendments, and spells out detailed procedures for gathering signatures, submitting them to the Secretary of State, and reviewing them with the Attorney General. Missourians have used this provision many times in recent years, and they do so almost all the time. rear The Missouri General Assembly refused to enact the bill. In addition to abortion rights, legalizing marijuana and expanding access to Medicaid, Missouri voters have adopted a statewide minimum wage law and proposed and approved amendments in recent years to allow sports betting.

This sounds like a success story of the will of the people of Missouri and the masterful use of the state constitution. And most of them are. But partisan legislatures have responded by trying to protect their own (gerrymandered) power and limit the power of the people. Most importantly, the Missouri General Assembly in September proposed a constitutional amendment that would require approval of such initiatives to pass in every Missouri congressional district (recently regerrymandered to favor Republicans in essentially every district), rather than requiring a simple statewide majority. I hope Missouri voters reject this anti-democratic amendment.

Congressional resistance to the will of the voters has often been aided by the Secretary of State and Attorney General, who play a role in the process. For example, it has the power to reject signatures submitted in support of a proposal or review the proposed wording of an initiative. These officials did not hesitate to use their powers to block, obstruct, or limit the initiative process.

But despite these hurdles to Missouri’s direct democracy, Missouri voters have a greater say than their friends in neighboring Kansas. Kansan does not have a process for citizen-initiated reform or legislation. Instead, constitutional amendments can only be proposed by a partisan and gerrymandered Congress. Kansas voters have no recourse, as the Kansas Legislature has repeatedly refused to legalize marijuana or expand Medicaid. If an initiative process existed in Kansas, would voters pass these policies?

Further demonstrating the disconnect between Congress and the people, the Kansas Legislature proposed an ill-fated constitutional amendment that would give Congress full control over reproductive rights in 2022. After the Kansas Supreme Court strongly upheld the state’s constitutional right to abortion in 2019, the Legislature challenged constitutional reform advocates to propose to the public a highly confusingly worded (perhaps intentionally so) proposal called the “Value Both” Amendment, which refers to women and unborn babies. This amendment would overturn the Kansas Supreme Court’s decision.

In a remarkable display of popular sovereignty, Kansas voters turned out in droves to vote and overwhelmingly rejected the amendment, even though the Legislature had strategically scheduled primary voting and turnout was generally lower than in the general election. The strength and broad nature of that vote across the state suggests that people’s desires may differ from those of Congress in other areas as well.

Was the Kansas Legislature chastened by the people’s vote? Not at all. Immediately after the vote, some Kansas legislators publicly acknowledged that their position on reproductive rights was contrary to that of the majority of voters. The state’s attorney general told the Kansas Supreme Court in oral argument after the vote that the statewide vote affirming abortion rights in Kansas was “inconsequential.” And Congress went even further by enacting new laws that obstructed and restricted reproductive rights.

The latest effort to advance partisan interests in the Kansas Legislature is a proposed constitutional amendment that would make Kansas Supreme Court justices elected, rather than appointed by a committee of lawyers and citizens and then appointed by the governor, as has been the case since the 1957 constitutional amendment enacted in the wake of scandalous and politicized Supreme Court appointments. Perhaps Kansas’ legislative leaders believe that elected Supreme Court justices are more likely to follow the Legislature’s orders.

In Kansas and Missouri, there is a deep disconnect between popular will and legislative priorities. Missouri voters have successfully invoked the initiative process to enact their will on many important public policy topics, despite attempts by Congress to limit voter authority. Kansas voters don’t have that option. That’s a big difference for these two sister states.

FIFA to award Peace Prize in World Cup draw. Will Trump win?

0

Trump’s close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino has sparked speculation that the president, who has publicly aspired and campaigned for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, could win the award.

play

  • FIFA will award the first-ever Peace Prize at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, DC.
  • US President Donald Trump has developed a close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
  • Human rights groups are calling on FIFA to address U.S. rights issues alongside the new award.

Will President Donald Trump finally win the World Peace Prize?

The international soccer governing body will announce the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize winners on December 5th at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The award comes as the groupings for the first stage of the 2026 World Cup Soccer Championship, which will be held in more than 10 cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada next summer, will be widely televised.

FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association and is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. It is the governing body for all national and confederation soccer associations, including the United States Soccer Federation, which oversees the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the new Peace Prize on November 5th at the American Business Forum in Miami. Infantino said the inspiration for the award was the motto of the most popular sport on the planet to “unite the world.”

“But when we look at what is happening in the world today, which is a very divided world, we also think at FIFA that we need to find more opportunities to bring people together,” Infantino said. “Because only when people come together and talk to each other can they understand each other.”

Infantino added that while soccer brings people and communities together, it is also important that the sport recognizes the efforts of leaders to promote peace.

“We must support those who are doing something special for peace,” he said. “So we thought we should make the FIFA Peace Prize a reality, to recognize someone who has done a lot or is doing a lot for peace, because we need it.[Soccer]helps a little bit, but you need a leader who can push it into the goal and score the goal.”

FIFA president unashamedly admires Trump

President Trump claims to have ended about 10 conflicts around the world since taking office in January. That includes a peace treaty that Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are scheduled to sign on December 4 at the recently renamed Donald J. Trump Peace Institute in Washington.

President Trump brokered an end to hostilities between Israel and the Gaza Strip, but violence continues in the region. Six Palestinians were reportedly killed in an attack by Israeli military aircraft in Lebanon this week. President Trump and his administration continue to seek a deal to end the war in Ukraine, which has raged for nearly four years since Russia’s invasion of the Eastern European nation.

Infantino’s close relationship with Trump has sparked speculation that the president, who has publicly coveted and campaigned for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, could be the winner.

Indeed, during his speech at the Miami conference, Infantino talked about Trump and said he felt “very lucky” to have such a “great relationship” with him. He said the president was “very, very helpful” during his first term in the White House in securing the United States as next year’s host nation.

“He does what he does. What he does, what he says, what he says, what he thinks,” Infantino said. “In fact, he says things that a lot of people think but probably wouldn’t dare say, and that’s why he’s so successful, right?”

The FIFA president went on to say he was “surprised” by the criticism of Trump.

“He was elected based on a program, based on what he said. He’s just doing what he said he was going to do,” Infantino said. “So I think we should all support what he’s doing because I think he’s doing some pretty good things and I think it’s absolutely right. And for FIFA it’s more than that.”

However, these comments also drew criticism from within the FIFA community for Infantino, who said they violated the requirement that FIFA officials remain neutral and not interfere with or support member countries’ political platforms or leaders.

Miguel Maduro, former head of FIFA’s governance committee, said Infantino had crossed a line that should not be crossed. President Maduro said Infantino has the right to recognize the legitimacy of foreign leaders, but cannot demand state support or support for them or their policies.

FIFA receives challenge from advocacy group over Peace Prize

FIFA is also facing calls to “match lofty rhetoric on rights with concrete action” in light of the Peace Prize. The demand comes from a coalition of human rights, civil rights, and labor rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, AFL-CIO, Amnesty International, and the NAACP.

“FIFA’s so-called Peace Prize is being awarded against a backdrop of violent detentions of immigrants, the deployment of the National Guard to American cities, and the persistent suspension of FIFA’s own anti-racism and anti-discrimination campaigns,” Minky Worden, sports director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. “There is still time to honor FIFA’s promise of a World Cup untainted by human rights abuses, but the clock is ticking.”

Additionally, the Trump administration has been embroiled in intense scrutiny for what critics say is a possible war crime: the intentional killing of survivors in a second attack on a ship off the coast of Venezuela. The September 2 attack was part of a series of about 20 deadly attacks on boats that the government has accused of smuggling illegal drugs without publicly presenting evidence.

Additionally, the president criticized the “vast majority” of the U.S. population who are foreign-born in a scathing social media post late Thanksgiving night.

“The official alien population of the United States is 53 million (Census), most of them on welfare, from failed states, prisons, mental hospitals, gangs, and drug cartels,” Trump wrote. “They and their children are being supported by huge payments from patriotic American citizens who do not want to publicly complain or cause trouble in any way, shape or form because they have beautiful hearts.”

Trump has engaged with voters through a shared interest in sports.

Trump has long been associated with sports, especially golf. Trump’s business empire owns 11 clubs in the United States and four more overseas, according to a tally by Golfweek. In a Thanksgiving Day phone call with military men and women, the president said he had “legally” won 38 club championships.

But the president has also attended a series of other sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500 auto race, and a UFC mixed martial arts match.

Political analysts say his appearances at such events have broadened his political appeal.

“He’s in the Super Bowl, he’s in NASCAR, he’s connected to the people who come to the UFC games,” said Jenelle Cavello Harnal, head of marketing data firm My Code Political. “And I think that has to do with his strategy.”

Cabello Harnal said Trump’s connections with voters at sporting and cultural events helped him win greater support among Latino, Black and young voters in 2024. Since then, My Code tracking has found that the administration’s immigration policy and inability to address affordability issues are driving many Trump voters away from him.

But the lesson of connecting with voters through non-political events is still worth emulating.

“I’m 100% convinced that if every elected official, every legislature, every member of Congress in America attended a popular local sporting event, there would be even more interest in politics and public service,” she said. “It’s not because they were at a food shelter handing out turkeys. Voters have a better understanding of what a football game is like instead of going to their local food shelter.”

Melania Trump keeps busy schedule during Christmas at the White House

First lady Melania Trump returned to public life over the holidays after keeping quiet for much of President Donald Trump’s first year in office, tired of the noisy construction of the White House.

The first lady appeared with her husband at the White House Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Dec. 4, one of several public outings over the past three weeks. She met with military families and U.S. soldiers at Camp Lejeune on Nov. 19 and welcomed the White House Christmas tree on Nov. 24.

The next day, President Trump helped pardon a pair of turkeys, Gobble and Waddle, in a quirky annual tradition. The first lady, who is now in full holiday spirit, has been attending ceremonies regularly in recent weeks.

Late last month, President Trump announced the launch of his production company, Muse Films, on social media with a short video revealing the official logo.

Muse’s first project is a new film titled Melania, which will first be released in theaters across the United States on January 30th, and then on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service. The documentary follows Trump during the 20 days following his inauguration on January 20, before his family returned to the White House.

The White House also announced President Trump’s Christmas theme, “Home Is Where The Heart Is,” on Monday, Dec. 1. On the same day, President Trump worked with Curb Your Enthusiasm alumnus Cheryl Hines and first lady Usha Vance, wife of Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to create care packages for deployed military personnel.

Trump stood at the head of the national Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 4, wearing a white wool coat over a buttoned blue dress and smiling broadly alongside the president.

And earlier this week, the president gave the American people a rare indication of his preference.

At a Dec. 2 Cabinet meeting, President Trump discussed demolishing the East Wing of the White House to make way for a 90,000-square-foot banquet hall. “I can’t say my wife is thrilled,” he says.

The president said of Melania Trump, “She can hear the piledriver behind her day and night.” “They piledriver day and night until 12 o’clock in the morning. ‘Darling, can you please stop the piledriver?’ Sorry, darling. That’s progress.”

Amid the recent uproar over her husband’s presidential bid, President Trump is probably planning more public appearances in time for the holiday season.

Netflix to buy HBO Max owner Warner Bros. What we know so far.

0

play

Netflix has agreed to buy Warner Bros. Discovery’s television and movie studios and streaming division for $72 billion. It’s a massive deal that will give the streaming pioneer control of one of Hollywood’s most valuable and oldest assets.

The agreement, announced on Friday, Dec. 5, comes after a weeks-long bidding war in which Netflix took the lead with an offer of nearly $28 per share, outpacing Paramount Skydance’s nearly $24 bid for the entire Warner Bros. Discovery, including the cable TV assets that will be spun off.

Warner Bros. Discovery stock closed at $24.50 on Thursday, December 4th, giving it a market capitalization of $61 billion.

Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery deal set to reshape media landscape

Netflix has traditionally built its own catalog of franchises, but acquiring major franchises like “Game of Thrones,” “DC Comics” and “Harry Potter” is a “rare opportunity,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a call about the deal Friday.

“Together, we can give our viewers even more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling,” Sarandos said in a statement.

A merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery could further tilt the balance of power in Hollywood in favor of the streaming giant, helping it avoid competition from Walt Disney Co. and Paramount, which is backed by the Ellison family.

“If this deal passes regulatory approval, it would solidify Netflix’s position as the Goliath of streaming services with the combined weight of HBO Max and the content studios behind it,” said Mike Proulx, director of research at technology advisory firm Forrester. “This deal changes the calculus of the streaming wars and represents a seismic shift in the entertainment industry.”

Will a deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery materialize? May be subject to strong antitrust laws

Analysts say Netflix is driven by a desire to secure long-term rights to hit shows and movies and reduce its dependence on outside studios as it looks to expand into gaming and find new avenues of growth following its success in cracking down on password sharing.

But the deal is likely to come under intense antitrust scrutiny in Europe and the U.S., as it would give the company access to an expanded network of about 300 million Netflix subscribers and about 130 million HBO Max streaming subscribers.

Paramount, led by David Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, was expected to be the leader in the bidding war after Warner Bros. Discovery launched a bidding war with a series of unsolicited offers. Ellison and Paramount have close ties to the Trump administration and questioned the sale process in a letter earlier this week alleging preferential treatment to Netflix.

To allay concerns about market concentration, Netflix argued in contract negotiations that combining its streaming service with HBO Max would lower the cost of the bundled service and benefit consumers, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

“This agreement supports consumers, innovation, workers, creators and growth,” Sarandos said, expressing confidence that the deal will be completed.

Consumers will now be able to subscribe to Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery packages, increasing “value for consumers,” he said.

Netflix will continue to release Warner Bros. Discovery movies, fending off concerns that the deal could eliminate another studio or major source of theatrical films.

Facts about Netflix’s cash and stock deal with Warner Bros. Discovery

Netflix’s stock fell nearly 3% in premarket trading, while Paramount’s fell 2.2%. The deal for a third suitor, Comcast, was little changed.

Under the deal, each Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder will receive $23.25 in cash and approximately $4.50 in Netflix stock per share, valuing Warner at $27.75 per share, or approximately $72 billion in equity and $82.7 billion including debt.

Sarandos said the transaction is expected to close within 12 to 18 months, with Warner Bros. Discovery spinning off its global networks division Discovery Global as a separate publicly traded company, currently scheduled to close in the third quarter of 2026.

Netflix said it expects to save at least $2 billion to $3 billion a year by the third year after the deal closes.

Frontier AI agents replace chatbots

0

According to AWS at re:Invent 2025 this week, the chatbot hype cycle is effectively over and Frontier AI agents will replace it.

That’s the blunt message coming out of Las Vegas this week. The industry’s obsession with chat interfaces is being replaced by “frontier agents” who do far more demanding tasks: not just talk, but work autonomously for days at a time.

We are moving from the novelty phase of generative AI to a tougher era of infrastructure economics and operational plumbing. The “wow” factor of poetry writing bots has faded. Now is the time to check the infrastructure required to run these systems at scale.

Addressing the plumbing crisis at AWS re:Invent 2025

Until recently, building frontier AI agents capable of performing complex, non-deterministic tasks was a bespoke engineering nightmare. Early adopters have spent resources on a combination of tools to manage context, memory, and security.

AWS is trying to eliminate that complexity with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. This is a managed service that acts as the agent’s operating system and handles the backend work of state management and context retrieval. The efficiency gains from standardizing this layer cannot be ignored.

Take MongoDB as an example. By decommissioning our homegrown infrastructure for AgentCore, we integrated our toolchain and pushed our agent-based application to production in eight weeks. It’s a process that used to take months of evaluation and maintenance time. The PGA Tour used this platform to build a content generation system that reduced costs by 95 percent while increasing write speeds by 1,000 percent, delivering even greater benefits.

Software teams are also gaining dedicated employees. At re:Invent 2025, AWS unveiled three specific Frontier AI agents: Kiro (Virtual Developer), Security Agent, and DevOps Agent. Kiro is more than just a code completion tool. It connects directly to your workflow with “features” (specific integrations for tools like Datadog, Figma, Stripe, etc.) that allow it to act in context rather than just guessing syntax.

Running the agent for several days consumes a large amount of computing power. If you’re paying standard on-demand rates for that, your ROI evaporates.

AWS knows this, which is why they’re being aggressive with their hardware announcements this year. Powered by 3nm chips, the new Trainium3 UltraServers claim a 4.4x increase in computing performance compared to the previous generation. For organizations training large base models, this reduces training timelines from months to weeks.

But the more interesting change is where that computing resides. Data sovereignty continues to be a headache for global enterprises, often hindering the adoption of sensitive AI workloads in the cloud. AWS is countering this with “AI factories” (essentially shipping racks of Trainium chips and NVIDIA GPUs directly into customers’ existing data centers). It’s a hybrid strategy that recognizes the simple truth that for some data, the public cloud is still too far away.

Challenge to the mountain of heritage

Innovations like those seen with Frontier AI agents are great, but most IT budgets are being squeezed by technical debt. The team spends about 30% of its time just keeping the lights on.

During re:Invent 2025, Amazon updated AWS Transform to specifically attack this. Use agent AI to handle the heavy lifting of upgrading legacy code. This service can now handle full-stack Windows modernization. This includes upgrading .NET apps and SQL Server databases.

Air Canada used it to modernize thousands of Lambda functions. It was over in a few days. Doing this manually would have cost five times as much and would have taken weeks.

For developers who want to actually write code, the ecosystem is expanding. The Strands Agents SDK was previously Python only, but now supports TypeScript. As the lingua franca of the web, it brings type safety to the chaotic output of LLM and is a necessary evolution.

Smart governance in the era of frontier AI agents

There is danger here. Agents that operate autonomously “without intervention for days” are also agents that can corrupt databases or leak PII without anyone noticing until it’s too late.

AWS is attempting to encompass this risk in its “AgentCore Policy.” This feature allows teams to set natural language boundaries for what agents can and cannot do. Combined with “evaluation,” which uses pre-built metrics to monitor agent performance, it provides a much-needed safety net.

Security teams are empowered with updates to Security Hub. This allows signals from GuardDuty, Inspector, and Macie to be tied to a single “event” instead of flooding your dashboard with individual alerts. GuardDuty itself is expanding to use ML to detect complex threat patterns across EC2 and ECS clusters.

We are clearly past the pilot program stage. The tools announced at AWS re:Invent 2025 are designed for production environments, from specialized silicon to managed frameworks for frontier AI agents. The question for business leaders is no longer “What can AI do?” But, “Can we have the infrastructure to make that work?”

Maurice Dubois leaves CBS Evening News without anchor

0

play

Maurice Dubois has parted ways with the CBS Evening News after 15 years, leaving the program without an anchor at the end of this month.

His last broadcast will be Dec. 18 after more than 21 years with the network, dating back to 2004 when he was at New York City station WCBS-TV, he announced in an Instagram post on Thursday, Dec. 4.

“This was the honor of a lifetime,” he wrote. “What an honor! To be welcomed into your homes every night to bring you the news, meet special people, and tell their stories. I will leave full of gratitude, important relationships, and great memories. Only a few more weeks. Until then, I’ll see you every night on CBS Evening News at 6:30 p.m.”

The Long Island native and Northwestern University graduate has covered a variety of topics throughout his career, moderated political debates, and won five Emmy Awards.

Who will replace Maurice Dubois at “CBS Evening News”?

Dubois, along with co-anchor John Dickerson, will leave the show by the end of 2025, but CBS has not yet announced who will replace them next year. USA TODAY has reached out to CBS for comment.

Dickerson announced in an Oct. 27 Instagram post that he was stepping down as co-anchor and chief political analyst for CBS News, but did not provide a reason for his resignation.

“I am extremely grateful for everything CBS has given me, the work, the audience attention, and the honor of being part of the network’s history. I am also grateful to my dear colleagues who have made me a better journalist and a better person,” he wrote. “i will miss you.”

The network confirmed that he will continue to co-anchor “CBS Evening News” through the holiday season, but it’s unclear who will be watching in January.

Aluminum OS is the AI-powered successor to ChromeOS

0

Integrating mobile and desktop operating systems has remained an elusive goal for big tech companies since the early days of smartphones. Microsoft’s experiment with Windows Mobile was dead by 2010, and even though Apple’s iOS/iPadOS and macOS have been very slow to come to terms with each other over the past few years, Cupertino still hasn’t reached its fabled goal of one OS to rule them all.

But Google’s big plan to combine ChromeOS and Android into a unified PC platform (codenamed Aluminum OS) is slowly taking shape. Android-powered laptops are expected to be released in 2026, and the company wants to put LLM at the center of the user experience.

Therefore, hardware procurement decisions are likely to be aligned with a company’s AI strategy in the coming year. Chromebook-style devices and the prospect of lower prices that come with them will be appealing to both organizations looking to update their next machine and strategists looking to put AI at the center of their employees’ daily work. Maybe we’ll find a common solution soon.

Although converged device development at Google is still in its early stages, the company is well known both for floating ideas that never come to fruition and for abandoning technology that can’t be monetized effectively enough. Unlike some of the company’s projects, which may stem from its “20%” policy (Google employees are encouraged to dedicate 20% of their time to moonshot projects), Google’s policy of having a rich Android development community and putting Gemini at the forefront may accelerate the need for a new unified operating system.

Android’s existing AI features, such as Magic Editor for photos, audio transcription, and summarization, port very well to the workplace desktop. However, if Google wants to allay security experts’ fears, it may need to rely on a smaller, local model for AI processing, rather than reaching out to Gemini’s cloud instances for the necessary computing power. This calls into question one of the Chromebook series’ big selling points: its continued low price point compared to full-fledged workstations.

There’s also a delicate balance that companies need to strike. Forcing users into AI-centric workflows hasn’t worked for Microsoft. Look at the uproar surrounding Recall and the muted response to its much-reduced offspring from Copilot Labs. What Google needs are killer AI features that benefit businesses, which may or may not be aimed at users.

Despite the significant price increase earlier this year, there’s no denying that the addition of Gemini to Google Workspace has done wonders for the platform in terms of being competitive with Office 365. This was partially driven by new features like live translation in Google Meet and AI responses available in Gmail. user do While some AI tools are seen as useful, it may become clear that user-facing AI is more of a useful addition to existing workflows than a catalyst that changes everything.

So when it comes to putting Gemini or Gemini Nano at the heart of a new operating system, Google may be trying to deliver value to different parts of the company from the everyday tasks users tackle. Android permissions Suggestions include smart power management, device provisioning, and context awareness when accessing corporate resources. However, it is unclear how transformative these factors will be for procurement teams.

Google has many issues to resolve at a deeper level, including peripheral compatibility, OS-level drivers, and changes needed to the Android GUI to provide a better experience for end users with mice and keyboards. But with enough effort and investment (of which the company has no shortage), these are problems that can be overcome relatively easily. A thriving app ecosystem ensures that even if the tools you need aren’t readily available, they are available with minimal effort.

Ultimately, the success of Aluminum OS will depend on Google’s ability to provide a platform that solves specific problems and integrates into existing workflows. Google believes that AI in the form of Gemini (or localized Gemini Nano instances) will power the platform to provide integrated problem solving. Achieving this goal will create demand and a lower price per machine could be a deciding factor for procurement teams. If Google gets it right, it could repeat the success it experienced in the education market with its original Chromebook project, leading to a significant shift of enterprise fleets to Aluminum OS and Google Workspaces.

There are significant benefits for companies that dominate the global mobile market and enter the enterprise workstation market in earnest. Moreover, the integration of that elusive device will come much closer to reality.

What is President Trump’s approval rating? MAGA warning issued in TN special election

0

play

  • According to the average of multiple polling companies, Donald Trump’s approval rating is a net negative.
  • According to Gallup, President Trump’s approval ratings in the first years of both terms were lower than any other modern president during the same period.
  • Democrats have overperformed in recent elections, warning Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections.

The 2026 midterm elections are just around the corner, and politicians on both sides of the election are looking for clues about which way voters are swinging.

First, the Democratic Party won an overwhelming victory in the state and local elections held on November 4th. And the race for the House district, a Republican stronghold in Tennessee, was surprisingly intense.

Republicans ultimately won the Dec. 2 special election, but President Donald Trump needed to be involved in the race to increase turnout.

Republicans may fear a blue wave in 2026, but this leads to another big clue: How do voters feel about the person at the helm of the party? Here’s what you need to know about President Trump’s approval ratings.

What is President Trump’s average approval rating?

President Trump’s approval ratings are net negative, but may be stabilizing after plummeting last month, according to an average based on RealClearPolitics and the New York Times aggregator.

According to graphics from RealClearPolitics, President Trump’s approval rating was 50.5% as of January 27th, making him net positive, but by March 13th, his approval rating was 47.8%, and his disapproval rating was 48.5%, making him net negative. The approval rating hit its lowest of 45.1% on April 29, but it declined near the 100th day of the Trump administration. It hit a new low of 42.3% on Nov. 14 as the controversy over Jeffrey Epstein’s emails intensifies following the end of the government shutdown. According to RealClearPolitics, as of Dec. 4, 42.4% approve and 54.9% disapprove.

President Trump’s approval rating fell from 52% in January to 44% in April, then remained roughly flat for several months, according to a New York Times tally. Trump’s lowest approval rating of his term is 41%, which he first reached on November 12, according to the Times. The disapproval rate also rose to 56% on November 19, the highest level this term, according to the aggregation company. According to the New York Times, as of Dec. 4, 42% of voters approve and 55% disapprove.

How does President Donald Trump’s approval rating compare to previous presidents?

In a Gallup poll conducted November 3-25, 36% of respondents approved of President Trump’s job performance.

Trump’s approval ratings in his first November as the 45th and 47th president of the United States were lower than any other modern president during the same period, according to a historical analysis by Gallup. According to Gallup, his November confirmation compares to other presidents’ first year in office.

  • Joe Biden (November 2021) – 42% support
  • President Trump (November 2017) – 37% approve
  • Barack Obama (November 2009) – 51% approve
  • George W. Bush (November 2001) – 87% approved
  • Bill Clinton (November 1993) – 49% support
  • George H.W. Bush (November 1989) – 70% approve
  • Ronald Reagan (November 1981) – 52% approve

Gallup: Republicans dissatisfied with President Trump, approval rating at lowest in term

According to Gallup’s monthly poll (conducted from November 3rd to 25th), President Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 36% from 41% the previous month. The poll surveyed 1,321 adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Compared to last month’s Gallup poll, President Trump’s approval rating has fallen by 7 points among Republicans and 8 points among independents.

This is the lowest approval rating for President Trump for a second term, according to the pollster, but it is statistically similar to his approval rating of 37% in July. His all-time low at the end of his term after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was 34% in 2021, Gallup reported.

Among issues, Trump has the highest approval rating on crime, but the worst on health care, according to Gallup.

The Economist/YouGov: Seven consecutive weeks of net approval rating at least -15 points

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted between November 28 and December. 38% approve of Trump’s job performance, while 57% disapprove. The survey included 1,628 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.

According to the pollster, President Trump’s net approval rating has remained below -15 points for seven consecutive weeks. While slumps in approval ratings this low lasted only a few weeks at a time during his first term, Biden recorded 28 consecutive weeks of such low approval ratings toward the end of his presidency, according to YouGov.

White Christmas forecast? Data reveals the best locations.

0

We won’t know the forecast for 2025 until mid-December, but history has some hints about which parts of the U.S. are most likely to see snow on Christmas.

play

Christmas is fast approaching, and many areas of the United States have already seen a glimmer (or more) of snow this winter season. But what are the chances of a white Christmas happening in 2025?

It’s too early to say with certainty where meteorologists will get enough snow to qualify as a white Christmas. (According to weather forecasters, a white Christmas is defined as at least an inch of snow on the ground, regardless of whether it actually snows on Christmas Day.)

Recent snowstorms in the Midwest, New England, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic region left about 40% of the country covered in snow on Dec. 3. More snow and arctic air is expected in the coming days and weeks, forecasters said.

While the available data gives us a good idea of the possibility of a white Christmas, NOAA says: Actual conditions may vary significantly in any given year Because current weather patterns will determine whether there will be snow on the ground on Christmas Day. ” For a more reliable forecast, check back with USA TODAY coverage and your local weather service office as Dec. 25 approaches.

Still, historical weather data can tell you what the odds are in different parts of the country.

States historically most likely to have a white Christmas

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which created a white Christmas probability map based on climate data from 1991 to 2020, says a white Christmas is most likely to occur in any given year in Minnesota, Maine, upstate New York, Idaho or some of the nation’s snowiest mountain ranges.

Cities historically most likely to have a white Christmas

According to an AccuWeather analysis of historical data, none of the 25 most populous U.S. cities have a very high chance (more than one-third) of a white Christmas. According to AccuWeather, Denver is the most likely city among large cities, with a 34% chance, followed by Chicago at about 33.5%.

Indianapolis, Boston and Columbus are among the top five major U.S. cities most likely to have a snowy Christmas.

Outside of large cities, mountain towns in the Rocky Mountains and New England have the best chance of a white Christmas, according to AccuWeather. The probability for Tahoe City, California is 83.4%. Ski towns in Colorado have a 94-99% chance.

States least likely to have a white Christmas

Where are the least likely locations for a snowy Christmas scene? West Coast, Deep South, Gulf Coast.

According to NOAA data, the highest chances of snowfall include much of the southeastern part of the country and the West Coast. It probably goes without saying, but based on the data, there is a 0% chance of a white Christmas in Miami, Houston, or Los Angeles.

Former Honduran president’s drug conviction follows 10-year investigation

0

Hernandez’s 2024 conviction is based on more than a decade of global investigation by dozens of U.S. federal drug enforcement agents and veteran prosecutors, as well as testimony from numerous witnesses and informants.

play

WASHINGTON – He conspired with drug lords to transport tons of cocaine into the United States, amounting to “billions of personal doses,” in the words of one federal prosecutor, amid an onslaught of machine guns, grenade launchers and assault weapons.

Millions of dollars in drug money and bribes in return fueled his rise in Honduran politics.

But when President Donald Trump pardoned the former Honduran president, he argued that Juan Orlando Hernández was the victim of a political blowback by the Biden administration so bad that he should be immediately released from his 45-year sentence for conspiring to flood the United States with more than 400 tons of cocaine.

“Many Hondurans said this was an orchestration by Biden,” President Trump said on November 30, in one of several comments justifying the pardon.

The pardon was made possible by President Trump’s consideration of the Honduran presidential election and his endorsement of his preferred candidate, who is a member of the same conservative party as Hernández.

People familiar with the case insist that Hernández’s 2024 conviction was not put together in haste or retaliation by President Joe Biden’s Justice Department.

They say he was the central figure in an evil plan – and that His indictment was built on more than a decade of evidence from a global investigation involving dozens of U.S. federal drug enforcement agents, veteran prosecutors and scores of witnesses and inside informants, according to U.S. government documents and a USA TODAY interview with a former lead investigator in the case. The former officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are actively involved in private sector law enforcement efforts and fear political retaliation.

One of the lead prosecutors in the massive investigation into drug trafficking and corruption in Honduras was actually Emile Bove, who was slated to become Trump’s personal lawyer after leaving the Justice Department in 2021, according to a former official. Mr. Trump then nominated Bove to be deputy attorney general and eventually a judge for life.

10 years on the job: From frontline smuggler to drug lord

The case began in 2010, when an investigation into secret cocaine flights from Venezuela to Honduras began, former officials told USA TODAY. Soon, he said, Drug Enforcement Agency officials in Honduras and the region began targeting smugglers and their logistical support networks, with some becoming secret collaborators and building evidence against higher-ups.

A specialized DEA FAST unit, a foreign advisory and assistance team, was transferred from Afghanistan to Honduras to work with local authorities. This revealed widespread corruption involving police officials, members of parliament and politicians, including local mayors, former officials said.

Over the next decade, DEA agents and Justice Department prosecutors arrested more than 40 traffickers and corrupt officials, painstakingly transported them to the United States and presented evidence to a grand jury in New York. Alexandria, Virginia. And Miami, the former official said.

Several of Hernández’s co-conspirators were the first to be convicted, including Hernández’s brother Juan Antonio Hernández Alvarado, a former Honduran congressman who was sentenced to life in prison in March 2021.

Juan Carlos Bonilla Validares, also known as El Tigre, a former head of the Honduran National Police, pleaded guilty to participating in a cocaine import conspiracy and was sentenced to 19 years in a U.S. prison in August 2024.

At Mr. Hernández’s own sentencing last year, Damien Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said that with the protection and support of Mr. Hernández as president, he facilitated the smuggling of an “almost incalculable” amount of cocaine into the United States, representing “billions of personal doses.”

Hernández’s own role in the massive international scheme began as early as 2004 and continued until at least 2022, and he was “the central figure in the world’s largest and most violent drug trafficking conspiracy,” Justice Department court documents allege.

According to Justice Department records, Hernández’s co-conspirators used machine guns, grenade launchers, and assault weapons such as AK-47s and AR-15s to protect cash profits and protect drug-trafficking areas from rivals, as well as “to protect large quantities of cocaine as it passed through Honduras en route to the United States.”

In return, Mr. Hernández received millions of dollars in drug funds, which he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics, the Justice Department said.

“As Mr. Hernández rose to power in Honduras, he increased his support and protection for his co-conspirators, who moved mountains of cocaine, committed acts of violence and murder, and helped turn Honduras into one of the most dangerous countries in the world,” the Justice Department said in a June 2024 sentencing in Manhattan.

Prosecutors say Mr. Hernández used his political office to vocally promote anti-drug legislation and pretended in public that he was cooperating with U.S. authorities to fight drug cartels.

But all the while, federal prosecutors said, “he protected and enriched his inner circle of drug traffickers and those who provided the cocaine-fueled bribes that enabled him to gain and maintain power in Honduras.”

After a three-week trial in Manhattan, a federal jury convicted Hernandez in March 2024 of his role in leading what the Justice Department called a decades-long drug trafficking conspiracy.

Amnesty raises concerns and skepticism

President Trump’s pardon of Hernández, 57, has been met with skepticism.

A former Justice Department official involved in the case said Trump’s pardon of Hernández has caused shock and confusion for investigators and prosecutors. The official believes the pardon was the result of political lobbying.

Some Republicans have questioned how the move fits in with President Trump’s efforts to stem the flow of drugs into the United States from Latin America. The campaign threatens military action against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom Trump has portrayed as a drug lord, and includes having the U.S. military blow up a suspected drug ship, killing its crew.

“Why pardon this man and then go after President Maduro for smuggling drugs into the United States?” Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy wrote on X on November 30. “Lock up all the drug traffickers! I don’t understand why he would be pardoned.”

U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Florida) was also critical. “I wouldn’t have done that, but I’m not the commander in chief and I don’t have the pen to issue a pardon,” Salazar told CNN on Dec. 1. “I don’t know what happened.”

Congressional Democrats are now seeking answers to what New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen described as President Trump’s “reckless decision” to pardon political leaders “convicted of supporting one of the world’s largest drug-trafficking conspiracies.”

“Mr. Hernández’s conviction last year finally acknowledges responsibility for all the Honduran and American blood on his hands and sends a clear message that no drug trafficker is above the law, not even a former president,” Shaheen, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement.

“That’s exactly why all Americans should be outraged by President Trump’s pardon of former President Hernández,” Shaheen said. “President Trump should explain how this will make America safer.”

Although some Republicans have expressed concerns, the majority of the party is unlikely to object to President Trump’s use of pardon power in this case. Republicans control both chambers of Congress and will almost certainly veto any effort to hold hearings on the issue or investigate the circumstances that led to the pardon.

The Justice Department referred questions about what prompted President Trump to issue the pardon to the White House. This is one of hundreds he has issued since his second term began in January.

President Trump formally granted Hernandez a “full and unconditional pardon,” said Renato Stabile, the former president’s lawyer. Hernandez was released from Hazelton U.S. Penitentiary, a maximum-security prison in West Virginia, on early December 2.

“After spending nearly four years in prison without ever seeing his family, President Hernandez is extremely happy, relieved and incredibly grateful to President Trump for ending this nightmare,” Stabile said in a Dec. 3 statement to USA TODAY. “His main focus is how he can use this experience to drive positive change. He’s incredibly upbeat and mentally tougher than anyone I’ve ever met.”

What reasons did President Trump give for the pardon?

The White House referred USA TODAY to Trump’s comments aboard Air Force One on Nov. 30, in which he called the incident another example of political weaponization by the Biden administration.

“It was terrible. He was the president of the country. They were basically saying he was a drug dealer because he was the president of the country,” Trump said. “And I looked at the facts and agreed with it.”

A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case, told USA TODAY in an email that Hernandez said there was virtually no independent evidence presented at trial, including video, audio, financial records or details of meetings, bribes and assistance the Honduran president provided to the human trafficking operation.

Instead, the jury heard from cooperating witnesses and leaders of a notoriously violent drug cartel whom Hernandez described as a “professional liar,” officials said.

Roger Stone, a longtime and on-and-off political adviser to President Trump, told USA TODAY that he has been advocating for a pardon for Hernández for nearly a year after considering trial testimony and other factors.

Stone also said that he received a long and “persuasive” letter from Hernandez asking the president for a pardon, and that he “gave it to Mr. Trump for his consideration” shortly before Trump vowed to grant the pardon.

In a letter Stone shared with USA TODAY, Hernandez said he too was a victim of “political persecution” by the Biden administration.

Stone said he was not paid for his role in helping lobby for Hernández’s pardon and that he “acted in the interests of justice and fairness.”

“In my view, (Hernandez) received the same type of unlawful legal punishment from the Biden Justice Department that Mr. Trump received,” Stone said.

Mr. Stone had also lobbied Mr. Trump to pardon Mr. Hernández as a way to help defeat Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s ruling party in last week’s election.

Stone is backing Nasry “Tito” Asfura, a staunchly right-wing candidate similar to “the shining examples of El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele and Argentina’s Javier Milei,” he wrote in a Stone Cold Truth column published on Substack in January.

“Without firing a shot or deploying a single military force, Castro’s regime could be overthrown and Honduras liberated, which would be a massive strategic victory for U.S. interests in the region,” Stone said.

Thanks in part to President Trump’s support, Asfullah led Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasrallah by 515 votes in the latest count on December 1, with both men holding just under 40% of the vote in a close race plagued by website issues, Reuters reported.

Thriftmas is booming as shoppers look for second-hand gifts to save money

play

  • “Thriftmas” is a growing trend where shoppers buy new and used holiday gifts at thrift stores.
  • Shoppers are turning to second-hand gifts to save money and become more environmentally conscious.
  • The stigma against receiving second-hand gifts is waning, especially among younger generations.

Earlier this summer, Samantha Rose Brammer was thrifting when she found a brand new pickleball T-shirt. She thought it would make a great Christmas present for her aunt, who is a big pickleball player.

“That’s when the hunt started,” said Brammer, 30. She ended up completing her Christmas shopping for her family of 16 by purchasing almost everything at thrift stores.

The popularity of second-hand shopping also comes into the holiday season through Thriftmas.

Shoppers are buying new, gently used gifts at thrift stores, saying they’re leaning into this trend as a way to save money and be environmentally conscious.

In a recent survey of 1,500 shoppers by OfferUp, 81% said they plan to allocate a portion of their holiday budget to second-hand goods, and one in four (27%) said they plan to allocate as much as half.

Why is frugality so popular?

Kelly Stevenson, OfferUp’s vice president of brand, told USA TODAY that the perception of second-hand shopping has changed dramatically. “What was once considered a choice is now the preferred way to shop, especially during the holidays, as people are looking for meaningful, high-quality gifts at fair prices, often within their own communities.”

According to OfferUp’s 2025 Recommerce Report, 70% of Americans say the stigma against second-hand goods has diminished. In OfferUp’s Holiday Special Release, 67% of shoppers say they would be happy to receive a used gift in good or good condition.

This change is also being led by younger shoppers, Stevenson said, with 95% of Gen Z saying they would prefer to buy second-hand if they could find the same item for less.

Thriftmas gives items a second life

Brammer, of Phoenix, Arizona, is drawn to giving recycled items.

“They’re being given a new lease of life and they’re not going to end up in a landfill,” Brammer told USA TODAY. “Thriftmas is like reusing items and you save a lot of money.”

“I love giving gifts and finding things that people actually like and use,” Brammer said on TikTok, where she shared some of her Thriftmas finds.

Other gifts Brammer has given to his family include Hallmark ornaments for his aunt, who loves Hallmark movies, an infographic baseball book for his uncle, and a brand-new Beatles puzzle for his aunt, who is a big fan of the band.

Gifts averaged about $5 per person, but when Brammer researched retail prices, the average was $15 to $20.

Brammer’s advice is to start early in the year, especially if you’re thrifting for a lot of people. But if you’re shopping now, it’s still possible to cut down on your Christmas list, she says.

Brammer says thrifting is becoming more mainstream, especially for people in her age group.

Buy items in gift-worthy condition and wash or wipe them, she recommended.

Avid thrifters say you can find just about anything at thrift stores

Natalie Ray, 28, of Woodstock, Georgia, has been attending Thriftmas for several years.

Ray, an avid thrifter, said finding the right gift can be difficult.

“I don’t know exactly what I’m going for…but I try to find something that resonates with that person,” Ray told USA TODAY.

But Ray said she’ll find the perfect money-saving gift for everyone on your list.

“Anything you want at the mall, you can find at the thrift store,” she said, adding that there is “overconsumption” and too much stuff is being sent to landfills.

Ray found a new Guess winter coat with tags for $8 for his mother-in-law. The retail price is usually over $50.

“I think she’ll love it. It’s one of her favorite brands,” Ray said.

She gave her sister, a teacher, a school-themed bag and pencil-shaped shoes.

Ray recognizes, “Not everyone wants a gift that’s recycled. I know one of my friends doesn’t particularly use recycled items, so I’m not going to buy her anything from the thrift store.”

Ray said the majority of Thriftmas purchases are done year-round. She especially likes shopping right after Christmas, when people donate lots of things that would make good gifts.

Thriftmas Gifts Your Family Will Love

Brammer’s extended family opened Christmas presents on Thanksgiving. Brammer wrote each person a card explaining why they chose that thrifty item.

“They were all shocked because they said it looked like a new gift and they had no idea it came from a thrift store,” she said. “The whole family has had a very positive response.”

He and his wife, Sally, moved to Hawaii and raised their family on Kauai. He is survived by his wife and their three children, Karen, Bryn, and Kana, and two grandchildren, River Clayton and Thea Clayton.

Decart uses AWS Trainium3 for real-time video generation

0

Amazon Web Services has scored another big win with its custom AWS Trainium accelerator after signing a deal with AI video startup Decart. With this partnership, Descart will optimize its flagship model Lucy on AWS Trainium3 to support real-time video generation, highlighting the growing popularity of AI accelerators over Nvidia’s graphics processing units.

Decart will essentially be fully powered by AWS, and as part of the deal, its models will be available through the Amazon Bedrock platform. Developers can integrate Descart’s real-time video generation capabilities into almost any cloud application without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.

Distribution through Bedrock improves the plug-and-play capabilities of AWS and demonstrates Amazon’s confidence in the growing demand for real-time AI video. You can also expand Descart’s reach and increase its adoption in the developer community. AWS Trainium provides Lucy with the additional processing power she needs to produce high-fidelity video without sacrificing quality or latency.

Custom AI accelerators like Trainium provide an alternative to Nvidia’s GPUs for AI workloads. Nvidia still dominates the AI market, with its GPUs processing the majority of AI workloads, but it faces a growing threat from custom processors.

Why all the fuss about AI accelerators?

AWS Trainium isn’t the only choice for developers. Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) product line and Meta’s Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) chips are also examples of custom silicon, and each has similar advantages over Nvidia’s GPU, or ASIC architecture (application-specific integrated circuit). As the name suggests, ASIC hardware is specifically designed to handle specific types of applications and do so more efficiently than general-purpose processors.

While central processing units are commonly considered the Swiss Army knife of computing because they can handle multiple applications, GPUs are more like powerful electric drills. They are much more powerful than CPUs and are designed to handle large amounts of repetitive, parallel computation, making them suitable for AI applications and graphics rendering tasks.

If a GPU is a power drill, an ASIC might be thought of as a scalpel designed for extremely precise procedures. When building an ASIC, chip manufacturers remove all task-unrelated functional units to increase efficiency, dedicating all operations to the task.

This provides significant performance and energy efficiency benefits compared to GPUs and may explain their increasing popularity. A great example of this is Anthropic. Anthropic is partnering with AWS on Project Rainier, a massive cluster of hundreds of thousands of Trainium2 processors.

Anthropic says Project Rainier provides hundreds of exaflops of computing power to run cutting-edge AI models, including Claude Opus-4.5.

AI coding startup Poolside also uses AWS Trainium2 for model training and plans to use the infrastructure for inference in the future. Meanwhile, Anthropic is hedging its bets and is also considering training future Claude models on clusters of up to 1 million Google TPUs. Meta Platforms is reportedly working with Broadcom to develop a custom AI processor to train and run Llama models, and OpenAI has similar plans.

Advantages of Trainium

Decart chose AWS Trainium2 because of its performance to achieve the low latency needed for real-time video models. Lucy’s time to first frame is 40ms. This means it will start generating the video immediately after the prompt. By streamlining video processing with Trainium, Lucy can even match the quality of slower, more established video models like OpenAI’s Sora 2 and Google’s Veo-3, with Descart producing output at up to 30 fps.

Descartes believes that Lucy will improve. As part of the deal with AWS, the company received early access to the newly announced Trainium3 processor, which is capable of up to 100 fps output and lower latency. “Trainium3’s next-generation architecture delivers higher throughput, lower latency, and better memory efficiency, enabling up to four times faster frame generation at half the cost of GPUs,” Decart co-founder and CEO Dean Leitersdorf said in a statement.

Nvidia may not be too worried about custom AI processors. The AI chip giant is reportedly designing its own ASIC chips to rival its cloud competitors. Additionally, each chip has its own strengths, so ASICs won’t completely replace GPUs. The flexibility of GPUs means they remain the only viable option for general-purpose models like GPT-5 and Gemini 3, and remain mainstream in AI training. However, many AI applications have robust processing requirements that make them particularly well-suited to running on ASICs.

The rise of custom AI processors is expected to have a major impact on the industry. By pushing chip designs to greater levels of customization and enhancing performance for specialized applications, we are poised for a new wave of AI innovation with real-time video at the forefront.

LeBron James’ 10 point streak ends, Lakers vs. Raptors stats

One of LeBron James’ great streaks has come to an end, and he missed a chance to extend it.

James did not score in double figures in a regular season game for the first time in nearly 19 years, and his streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points stopped at 1,297 games.

On Thursday, December 4, James scored eight points in a 123–120 victory over the Toronto Raptors. With the game tied at 120 and seconds left in the game, James had the ball in his hands and drove through the middle of the paint. But instead of taking a shot, James fired a pass into the left corner, where a wide-open Rui Hachimura made the winning 3-pointer.

“LeBron is very aware of how many points he has at that point,” Lakers coach JJ Redick told reporters after the game. “And I remember him being ridiculed early on for making the right play and letting his teammates shoot the game-winner, as he has done so many times in his career, but he did it, as he has done so many times in his career.

“I knew this was a good idea the moment I took it out of Louis-san’s hands.”

When asked how he felt about the winning streak coming to an end, James shrugged it off.

“Nothing,” James said firmly. “We won.”

Seconds after the end of the game, an exuberant James raised his hands in the air before joining the rest of his teammates to celebrate the winning shot.

“The basketball gods tend to reward you if you do it the right way,” Reddick said.

The last time James scored fewer than 10 points in a game was on January 5, 2007. Since then, he has set a streak that spanned five different presidential administrations, beginning with his 19 points against the New Jersey Nets on January 6 of that year.

Apple released the original iPhone in June 2007. That means James’ work predates ubiquitous devices. At the start of the streak, Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” was the only song to top the Billboard Hot 100. His son and current teammate, Bronny James, was 2 1/2 years old.

Michael Jordan ranks second with 866 consecutive games scoring 10 or more points.

The new record for longest consecutive game is now 267 games played by Kevin Durant. This is one of James’ records that will not be broken for a long time.

James finished the game making 4-of-17 shots from the floor, but missed any of his five 3-point attempts. He also recorded 11 assists and six rebounds, helping the Lakers improve to 16-5 and second place in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles was playing without Luka Doncic, who is away for personal reasons.

“Just playing the game the right way,” James said. “That was my MO. That’s how I was taught the game. That’s how I’ve been throughout my career. There was no second guessing there.”

Winners and losers of Lions vs. Cowboys: Jahmil Gibbs, George Pickens

0

play

Semantics aren’t all that important, but Thursday night’s showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions at Ford Field was more of a “can’t-lose” than a “must-win” for each team.

In the end, it was the home team that remained, and the Lions won 44-30. Detroit, third in the NFC North, has yet to advance into the playoffs expected by its conference, but according to NFL NextGenestats, the Lions (8-5) have a 54% chance of qualifying for the postseason for the third straight year.

Meanwhile, Dallas (6-6-1), which really can’t afford to lose, has just a 7% chance of advancing to Week 19.

As you know, the scoreboard shows the main storyline, but beyond that there are winners and losers. Thursday nights are as follows:

winner

jamil gibbs

Are we ready to crown him Lions Player of the Year? Perhaps it is just a belatedly obvious statement for many? However, the versatile running back had another impactful night, scoring three touchdowns. He has scored 47 career touchdowns, but was less than 100% as the offense was without injured tight end Sam LaPorta and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Gibbs is now tied with Lions legend and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, who needs one more touchdown to become the most of any player in his first three seasons in the NFL.

Dan Campbell

His Lions haven’t been as dominant this season as they’ve battled major injuries (DB Brian Branch could be next) and adjusted to a significantly revamped coaching staff. Still, Campbell has no intention of letting his team get stuck in a rut, and the Lions are avoiding back-to-back regular season losses for the first time since 2022. Even after the loss, Detroit has won 15 straight games, tying a league record.

philadelphia eagles

As inconsistent and battered as the team has been in recent weeks, Dallas’ loss leaves the reigning Super Bowl champions with an outright two-game lead in the NFC East with five games left in the regular season.

Brandon Aubrey

He became the first kicker since at least 1991 to make three field goals of at least 55 yards in a game. Dallas’ phenomenal long-range sniper hit from 57, 55 and 63 yards on Thursday, and threw for 42 and 29 yards with great success. He was the first NFL player to make 100 field goals in his first three seasons and the only player to score from at least 60 yards six times.

Cowboys run game pedigree

He’s no Tony Dorsett or Emmitt Smith, but first-year running back Javonte Williams reached 1,000 rushing yards in a season Thursday night for the first time in his five-year career. Williams becomes the fourth Cowboys to reach the benchmark in the past five seasons, joining Rico Doodle, Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott.

Thursday

Outside of the NFL’s research department, it’s interesting. The Lions’ 46 wins Thursday are the most in league history. The Cowboys have 44 teams. Unsurprisingly, these are the fruits of the team’s decades of involvement in Thanksgiving. However, given that both clubs traditionally host Turkey Day, they never actually faced each other on Thursday. Until now.

Cedee Lamb

The Cowboys’ Pro Bowl wideout had six catches for a season-high 121 yards, but the Lions essentially couldn’t cover him.

loser

Cedee Lamb

Early in the third quarter, Lamb tried to catch a pass in the end zone and his head hit the turf hard. He immediately appeared to show signs of a head injury and was immediately removed from the game with a concussion, but was able to walk to the locker room. It was a tough way to end what was shaping up to be a great performance.

Chicago Bears or Green Bay Packers

They will play Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field with first place in the NFC North on the line. And while the winner will own it outright, the loser will be at risk of falling into Detroit’s hands. The Pack have already swept Detroit, but the Lions defeated Chicago 52-21 in Week 2 and will face the Bears again in Week 18.

george pickens

The Ram wingman had a quiet night (5 catches, 37 yards) when the team really needed a loud performance. Pickens’ lack of influence came on one night when it appeared from some animated exchanges on the Dallas sideline that he and Dak Prescott weren’t on the same page. According to former Pro Bowl cornerback and current Prime Video analyst Richard Sherman, Pickens “didn’t seem interested.” yes.

jerry jones

The Cowboys’ owner is not on the injury report, but on a week-by-week basis, Dallas’ next game could be at home against the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 14, a long 10-day gap. Meanwhile, players Jones specifically traded for this year, Pickens and DT Quinnen Williams, were virtually absent in America’s team’s biggest game of the season. Meanwhile, the man who left, former Dallas DE Micah Parsons, continues to thrive with the Packers…and certainly would have been a welcome addition Thursday when Lions QB Jared Goff ran Detroit’s offense efficiently while getting little pressure. Jones’ team is technically on hold for the playoffs, but while he takes much of the blame, he knows many last rites will be read in North Texas and across the country over the next week and a half.
