Maine Democratic primary could impact balance of power in U.S. House of Representatives

0

The Democratic primary in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District will be held on June 9th and could determine control of the House.

play

  • Four Democratic candidates are expected to run to replace Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine.
  • Maine’s 2nd Congressional District is dominated by conservatives, and the Democrats who have won in the past tend to be moderates.
  • However, all four candidates are running to Golden’s left.

Democrats face a high-stakes choice in a competitive primary for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District on June 9th. The Democratic candidate’s chances could be crucial to the party’s efforts to win a House majority, as the candidate seeks to retain Rep. Jared Golden’s seat in a district that voted for President Donald Trump three times.

Four Democratic candidates are running to succeed Golden, a moderate who has won a series of razor-thin victories. They will face former Gov. Paul LePage, a conservative who is uncontested in the Republican primary.

Gun rights and gas prices are particularly important to residents in Maine’s two congressional districts, which tend to be more northern, rural and conservative. The Cook Political Report rates the district a “likely R.”

Golden, a strong supporter of gun rights, said he would be “okay” if Trump was re-elected in 2024. In his letter announcing that he will not run for re-election, Golden said the successful candidate needs to reflect the independence and diversity of opinions in the district.

But four candidates are all running to Golden’s left: state Sen. Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor, Maine Auditor Matthew Dunlap, social worker Paige Lourd and former legislative staffer Jordan Wood.

Maine experts said Democrats risk nominating someone too liberal to win in the district, which would hurt the party’s quest to flip the narrowly Republican-controlled U.S. House in November.

Can Democrats hold this seat? Is it necessary to nominate a moderate?

Maine’s unusual system of apportioning Electoral College votes by district has made Maine’s 2nd Congressional District the only New England state in the past three presidential elections to have given Trump its electoral votes. In 2024, they won the district championship by nine points.

“A second CD with general voting questions would give Republicans an advantage,” said Mark Brewer, chair of the political science department at the University of Maine. “But at the same time, this isn’t the Bible Belt of Alabama, right? A Democrat can win that seat. It’s got to be some kind of Democrat.”

Brewer said the more progressive candidates in the race are Loud, who has been particularly vocal in opposing Israel’s war efforts in Gaza, and Wood, who was chief of staff to former Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif.

Mr. Dunlap and Mr. Baldacci, who headed a prominent hunting organization in Maine, were close to the center.

In a May 27 poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Research Center, Mr. Wood and Mr. Baldacci led with 23% and 22%, respectively, followed by Mr. Dunlap (17%) and Mr. Loud (14%). Mr. Wood has experience in national politics and connections from his time in Congress, and has deftly led the field with more than $5.7 million in fundraising. Mr. Dunlap received the next highest total on the Democratic side, about $930,000.

Brewer said Democrats would be “in a bit of a pickle” if Loud or Wood were nominated.

“I think we probably would have a better chance if we had Dunlap or Baldacci,” Brewer said. “I think it’s going to be very difficult for progressive Democrats to win a popular vote on CD 2.”

In response to a request for comment about whether Democratic candidates are too progressive to win in the 2nd District, Wood said in a statement that the issues he is working on are not partisan.

“People don’t seem to want to get credit for their accomplishments, but Mainers know what they value and what they want from Washington: Medicare for All, a democracy they believe in, and housing they can afford. It’s not that complicated,” Wood said. This is common sense whether it’s June or November.

Baldacci said he focuses on the needs of his district rather than ideological labels.

“It’s not a question of left or right, it’s a question of being competent, being one, being independent and having the interests of the people of Maine in mind,” Baldacci said in a phone interview with USA TODAY.

Challenges for Lepage

Mr. Lepage is popular among Republicans and has the highest profile on the campaign trail.

When Mills lost the 2022 gubernatorial race, he overtook Mills to lead the 2nd District. However, voters are generally divided on their favorability ratings by party, with 43% saying they have a favorable opinion of him and 44% saying they have an unfavorable opinion of him, according to a June 2025 poll. And national factors could have a negative impact on Lepage, whom Trump endorsed in December.

Amy Fried, a political science professor emeritus at the University of Maine, said this year’s election is very similar to when Golden first won the seat in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin. It was also the midyear of President Trump’s administration, and Golden was more left-wing than he is now.

Midterm elections generally tend to go poorly for the president’s party, especially if the president is unpopular. President Trump’s approval rating is just 38%, according to a New York Times poll.

And oil prices have risen since the president took office, hitting Maine particularly hard. Maine has the highest household heating oil usage in the country, and Maine’s 2nd District is rural, so people tend to drive long distances.

“I think it’s going to be a tough race no matter who the Democrats nominate,” said Jim Melcher, a political science professor at the University of Maine at Farmington. “Some candidates may be stronger than others in the general election, but I think it’s going to be a close race.” “Mr. Lepage has many advantages, but they all run counter to Mr. Trump’s reputation on the nation’s economy.”

How Ranked Choice Voting Affects Results

Maine’s use of ranked voting has helped Golden win at least two elections. It could help more moderate Democrats win primaries this year.

Ranked voting is a system that allows voters to mark candidates as their first, second, third, and subsequent choices. The votes are then tallied round by round, with each round eliminating the lowest ranked candidate and distributing the votes for the next candidate.

Maine uses this system in all state and federal primaries with three or more candidates.

A UNH poll shows Mr. Wood holding a slight lead over Mr. Baldacci in first-choice votes, but a Cornell University analysis using ranking data found that Mr. Baldacci would receive more votes than Mr. Wood. In the newspaper’s mock primary election, Mr. Baldacci won 67% of the vote, while Mr. Wood received 20.5%.

A SurveyUSA poll showed similar results, with Mr. Baldacci leading Mr. Wood 56% to 44% in a ranked-choice voting simulation.

Neither Mr. Dunlap, Mr. Loud nor Mr. Lepage responded to requests for comment.

NBA Finals suddenly restarts

play

NEW YORK — The San Antonio Spurs may have felt like they were living in the movie “Groundhog Day,” but they have decided not to play a starring role in the upcoming sequel.

For the third consecutive game, the Spurs led by double digits in the first quarter, but this time, their coolness late and sloppy play from the New York Knicks gave them a much-needed victory that ended New York’s playoff winning streak at 13 after losing two straight at home and put them on the path to a spot in the NBA Finals.

After all, it wouldn’t be the “Knicks in Four.”

San Antonio’s 115-111 victory in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden wasn’t pretty. Although the Spurs were on the back foot, there was a sense of relief that they too could break their championship drought, at least for one night.

This is the second time a road team has won three straight games and the first time since 1993.

Game 4 will be played Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Spurs did everything right in the first 12 minutes, taking an early 12-point lead. They passed the ball efficiently, found open teammates, and let Victor Wembaneyama cook up easy buckets inside and outrageous alley-oops that would rival Stretch Armstrong.

San Antonio had 11 assists on 14 field goals in the first quarter. The Spurs’ 11 assists were the most in the first quarter of an NBA Finals game since the Golden State Warriors had 11 assists in Game 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018.

Wenbanyama had a great performance, with all five of San Antonio’s starting pitchers scoring in double digits, recording a game-high 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Wenbanyama became the third-youngest player to score at least 30 points in an NBA Finals game, following Magic Johnson (20 years and 276 days – 42 points in Game 6 against the 76ers in 1980) and Alvin Adams (21 years and 316 days – 33 points in Game 3 against the Celtics in 1976).

New York did everything it could for San Antonio’s cause.

Jalen Brunson led New York with 32 points and OG Anunoby added 28 points for the Knicks, but the Knicks lost for the first time in 46 days after losing in Game 3 to the Atlanta Hawks.

The energy in a packed Madison Square Garden was gone within the first few minutes as the Spurs scored the first seven points of the game and made eight of their first 10 shots. Not to mention the inconvenience to the many Knicks fans who had to arrive at the game two hours early and abide by strict security protocols as they entered the “world’s most famous arena” early in the morning after President Trump and his entourage descended on the city to watch the game.

After booing President Trump during the national anthem, Knicks fans heckled officials. New York committed four fouls in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and spent the rest of the game shooting free throws, with constant chants of “You suck!”

New York took control late in the second quarter, using several spurts and poor shooting by San Antonio to rally back and take its first lead of the game at 50-49 on Brunson’s 3-pointer. It was part of an 11-3 run that erased a double-digit point lead.

But that momentum quickly disappeared as soon as the Knicks came out of the locker room.

Two consecutive Knicks turnovers to start the third quarter, a four-point play by Julien Champagnie, and a flagrant foul on a closeout quickly erased much of New York’s seven-point lead at halftime.

New York was held scoreless, committed four fouls in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, and spent the rest of the game shooting free throws, prompting chants of “bull—“. San Antonio committed 21 fouls and the Knicks made 22 free throws. New York committed 23 fouls and forced the Spurs to the line 32 times.

Stephon Castle’s final 3 of his 23 points, a 3-pointer with 1:53 left, nearly sealed it, and De’Aaron Fox’s jumper in the lane with 12 seconds left sent the sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd to the exits.

The thing that led the Knicks to 13 straight playoff wins lacked balanced scoring in Game 3. Mikal Bridges had just two points in 29 minutes, and Karl-Anthony Towns had a pedestrian 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss for Wenbanyama. Towns spent most of the night in foul trouble, not actively attacking the rim and settling for an outside shot.

For the Spurs to repeat that trick and make their Groundhog’s Day play even more positive, they’ll have to rely on Wenbanyama’s scoring and his constant presence in the lane to spoil the game once again. The defensive player of the year had three blocks, impacted 12 other shots, and did his best to threaten Knicks players looking to score in the paint.

The series will be extended to at least five games, and if the Knicks can win the next two games (Game 5 will be played Saturday in San Antonio), their first title drought since 1973 will be a thing of the past.

US military helicopter crashes near Strait of Hormuz, pilot safe – President Trump

DUBAI/JERUSALEM – Two American pilots whose helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz are “fine,” President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, June 9, after The New York Times reported that the crew of an Apache gunship that crashed near the Iranian-controlled waterway had been rescued.

It was not immediately clear whether the Apache was shot down by Iranian artillery fire, suffered a mechanical failure or encountered some other problem, the report said. The White House, U.S. State Department and U.S. Central Command did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Asked if he knew what caused the helicopter to crash, Trump said he would release a report later Tuesday.

“The pilot is fine,” President Trump said in a speech on the runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport before returning to Washington, D.C. “No one was injured.”

The incident came a day after Iran and Israel announced they had halted attacks on each other following President Trump’s appeal, but Tehran warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The resumption of a delicate ceasefire comes as Washington tries to reach a deal with Iran to end a war that has lasted more than three months.

Trump also told reporters he could have an “idea” on the Iran deal within days, but did not elaborate. The Republican president, suffering record low approval ratings ahead of November’s midterm elections, has frequently hinted at an imminent deal with the Iranian government, but no deal has yet been reached.

This weekend saw the most direct clashes between Iran and Israel since the ceasefire in April. The Iranian government fired a missile into Israeli territory late Sunday in retaliation for an attack on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia outside Beirut.

Israel then attacked Iranian air defense systems and a petrochemical plant it said was used to make ballistic missiles. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it retaliated with an attack targeting a similar Israeli factory in the city of Haifa.

No deaths were reported by authorities on either side.

President Trump tells Prime Minister Netanyahu to be careful

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Monday, June 8, according to U.S. and Israeli officials.

In an interview with Axios, President Trump said he warned Netanyahu that if the Israeli leader went to war with Iran again, he might end up fighting alone. “I said, ‘Bibi, you better watch out or you’re going to be on your own soon,'” Trump said.

Israeli military officials said Israel was prepared to continue operations “for as long as necessary,” but Iranian officials struck a similarly defiant tone. The semi-official Tasnim news agency cited military sources as saying Iran was preparing for a prolonged conflict and could resume attacks on US interests in the region.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said the Iranian government was exchanging messages with the US government in an atmosphere of “extreme suspicion”.

Tehran has long said a peace deal with the United States depends in part on an end to fighting in Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March in pursuit of Hezbollah fighters who fired across the border. Israel insists the conflict should be treated separately from the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and has never stopped its military operations in Lebanon, which have killed thousands of people. Hezbollah also continues its attacks.

The Iranian government continues to block most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war transported one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas. The US government has imposed its own blockade on Iranian ports.

President Trump said a peace deal must prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran’s demands include lifting international sanctions, releasing billions of dollars in frozen assets and recognizing control of the strait.

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau have become red carpet officials after a year of dating.

Perry, 41, and the former Canadian prime minister, 54, attended the premiere of the pop star’s new music documentary, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris, on June 8 during the Tribeca Festival in New York City.

The two posed for a photo together, holding hands and looking into each other’s eyes. Mr. Perry wore a floor-length white gown, while Mr. Trudeau kept his look simple in a white dress shirt, black blazer, and matching slacks. Prime Minister Trudeau followed Perry along the carpet, greeting fans with selfies and autographs.

The film will premiere at the annual festival, along with other documentaries featuring fellow musicians such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Peter Frampton and Alicia Keys. Shot in November 2025, Perry’s film, directed by Paul Dugdale, details her ambitious Lifetimes tour concerts captured by 60 cameras during performances in Paris.

When did Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau start dating?

Mr. Perry and Mr. Trudeau have been in a romantic relationship ever since it was reported that they would visit Montreal in the summer of 2025. Shortly after, Trudeau was caught singing with Perry at his Montreal concert, confirmed in a video posted on social media.

The two became Instagram official in December, with Perry posting a collection of photos and videos from her time in Tokyo. This included spending quality time with her lover. The two have fueled speculation by making occasional public appearances over the last year, but neither has publicly commented on the status of their relationship.

Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire, who announced their resignation as prime minister in January 2025 under political pressure, announced their separation in August 2023. The couple have three children during their 18 years of marriage.

Perry and her ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, announced their split in July after nine years together.

Deadly listeria outbreak in multiple states linked to this cheese product

0

play

Federal health officials are warning consumers about a listeria outbreak that has already killed one person and sickened many more in multiple states.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an investigation notice and public health advisory on Thursday, June 4, after eight people became ill in three states. Of those eight people, seven were hospitalized, for a whopping 87.5% hospitalization rate, and one person died.

Both government agencies have warned that the actual number of infections could be much higher.

Whole-genome sequencing technology, used to track and identify specific bacterial strains, was able to trace the cause of the illness to soft cheese made by Mayland-based manufacturer Cloverhill Dairy after two people in New York became ill after eating it in May. Through testing, authorities discovered that the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was the same one that started making people sick in March 2023.

Testing at the Clover Hill Dairy facility detected Listeria monocytogenes in an 18-pound sealed, unopened bucket of Rexon cheese. Cloverhill subsequently issued a voluntary recall, and the state of Maryland suspended the dairy’s license pending further investigation.

The cheese likely was repackaged, relabeled, and distributed further than where the FDA is currently tracking it. Here’s what you need to know about the ongoing investigation and recall.

Product recalled due to listeria outbreak

A soft cheese made by a company has been linked to this outbreak. Cheese has been recalled.

But the FDA said it has not yet determined whether it is the only product causing the outbreak. More foods may be added to the list as research continues.

So far, the recall includes:

  • All Clover Hill Dairy soft ricotta/rexon cheese. It may come in several flavors, such as jalapeno. The container label must include Clover Hill Dairy’s manufacturer permit (or factory) number as “24-128.”

Cheese can be relabeled under different names, so consumers should check the manufacturer’s information on the package.

Where did people get sick?

Currently, this cheese is confirmed to be sold in three states.

The cheese was sold directly by Clover Hill Dairy in Maryland and through farmers markets and third-party distributors in New York and Virginia. FDA believes it may have been sold at locations in other states that have not yet been identified.

According to the CDC, as of June 4, eight people had become ill in three states. Seven of them were hospitalized and one died.

  • Maryland (3 results)
  • New York State (2 cases)
  • Virginia (3 results)

What to do if you remember cheese

The CDC recommends that the recalled cheese not be eaten, adding that it should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

High-risk individuals, people who may have eaten contaminated cheese in their households, and businesses who may have eaten cheese are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Clean refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with recalled cheese. Wash surfaces with warm, soapy water, then disinfect with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of water.
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food or potentially contaminated surfaces.
  • If you feel sick after eating potentially contaminated food, call your health care provider right away.

What are the symptoms of listeria poisoning?

Listeria poisoning is a foodborne illness most commonly caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the CDC. This is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for adults over 65, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

Symptoms usually begin within two weeks of eating the contaminated food, but can begin as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks. According to the CDC, symptoms include:

  • heat.
  • Muscle pain.
  • headache.
  • Stiff shoulders.
  • confusion.
  • lose balance.
  • convulsions.
  • diarrhea.
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and/or life-threatening infections in the newborn.
  • death.

People in high-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food should seek medical attention.

Fans boo at Madison Square Garden

Editor’s note: Click here for live coverage of Game 3 of the NBA Finals and the latest news. Between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump will play Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals, as promised.

President Trump arrived at Madison Square Garden on Monday, June 8, for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to officially attend an NBA Finals game.

After raising the flag and chanting “USA, USA, USA” several times, there were loud boos when President Trump was shown on a large video screen during the national anthem. As the boos grew louder, the president saluted and smiled slightly. The cheers returned when Knicks players appeared on the feed.

Trump was in a suite that was open at the top but protected by thick glass on three sides. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Trump’s granddaughter Kai were in the suite with Trump.

President Trump’s large motorcade arrived at the Garden at 7:28 p.m., and heavy security cordoned off much of Midtown in preparation for Trump’s arrival. The route to the game was down FDR, where he was greeted by signs that read, “We don’t want anyone here” and “Trump must go.”

President Trump previously said he was considering attending the first NBA Finals game in New York since 1999, at the invitation of Knicks owner James Dolan.

According to multiple reports, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Trump was a “huge Knicks fan even before he ran for office.” “I’ve been around the league for a long time. I used to go to a lot of Knicks games with him. He was at a lot of the drafts that were going on at Madison Square Garden, and years ago when I was running NBA Entertainment, he was actually featured in one of our ‘I love this game’ spots.”

Silver noted that special safety measures will be in place at Monday’s game because President Trump is expected to be in attendance. New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani was also scheduled to attend Game 3, but New York’s NBC4 reported that Mamdani bought his own ticket.

President Trump told reporters on Thursday, June 4, that he watched the beginning and end of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the Spurs and marveled at 7-foot-4 San Antonio star Victor Wembaneyama. The Knicks are looking to win their first NBA championship since 1973.

“I’ve been a Nick fan for a long time, and I’m a Jim Dolan fan,” Trump said. “He’s a good guy, okay? He’s wanted to win for a long time and he hates losing. He’s got a great team.”

Trump has frequently attended major sporting events during his second term as president, including appearances at the Super Bowl, College Football National Championship Game, Ryder Cup, Daytona 500, and numerous other UFC events. Last year, he also played in the US Open men’s tennis final in New York.

Trump recently attended a PGA Tour and LIV Golf event held at a golf course he owns in May.

President Trump last week indicated he was considering attending Game 4 of the NBA Finals, scheduled for Wednesday night in New York.

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater break up after 3 years

0

play

Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine,” co-starring Ethan Slater, wasn’t meant to be like that. USA TODAY has confirmed that the two have broken up nearly three years after their relationship was first reported.

People and TMZ reported on June 8, citing unnamed sources close to the actors, that the “Wicked” stars had quietly broken up several months ago. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Grande and Slater for comment.

The news comes on the heels of Grande, 32, kicking off her Eternal Sunshine Tour on June 6, six years after her Sweetener World Tour.

Their next album, Petal, is scheduled for release on July 30th.

Their relationship got off to a rocky start in July 2023, when reports about their relationship began to emerge amid their respective breakups from their respective spouses, sparking backlash from their co-stars.. Slater and Grande have kept a low profile throughout the global promotion of Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, but they have occasionally publicly supported each other at events and on social media.

“Of course, I went through a lot of life changes while filming this movie,” Grande said in a September 2024 Vanity Fair feature. “A lot of people who were working on it did. We were apart for two years. So I understand why it was a field day for the tabloids to create some kind of thing that would pay the bills.”

Grande said she would “never go into details” about her relationship with Slater, but said the “most unfortunate part” of the situation was that “so many people believed the worst.”

“It’s definitely been a tough road,” she added. The Grammy winner defended Slater, saying, “There is no more accurate depiction of a person than what the tabloids spread about him.”

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s relationship sparked amid divorce

After nearly three years of marriage, Grande and her husband Dalton Gomez filed for divorce in September 2023. The couple had separated several months earlier, but their divorce was finalized six months later. Slater reportedly began divorce proceedings with his wife Lily Jay in New York on July 26, 2023, and the divorce was finalized in September 2024 after five years of marriage.

A day after Slater filed for divorce, Jay told Page Six that Grande was “not a girl’s girl,” adding, “My family is just collateral damage.”

Jay slammed Slater’s high-profile relationship in a December 2024 essay for The Cut.

“Slowly but surely, I came to believe that even though the life I had planned with my high school sweetheart was gone, there was still a sweet life for me and my child,” Jay wrote. “While our partnership has changed, our parent-child relationship has not. Regardless of how parenting time is divided, we both will always love our son 100 percent.”

California will have the largest impact on driving U.S. productivity growth in 2025

0

play

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, California was the driving force behind U.S. productivity growth in 2025.

In its report, “Productivity by State – 2025,” the agency said California’s private nonfarm worker productivity increased by 4.2 percent last year, trailing only the District of Columbia (5.2 percent) and Arizona (4.4 percent).

Still, California’s productivity had the greatest impact on the nation.

Why California had the biggest impact on U.S. productivity

California’s economy is so large that its benefits have a huge impact on the entire country.

“California accounted for approximately 14% of national output and had the largest impact on national productivity growth,” the report states. “The state’s 4.2% increase in labor productivity in 2025 contributed to nearly a third of the national increase of 1.8%.”

Additionally, California worker productivity appears to be unaffected by large companies that have exited the state in recent years, including Charles Schwab, Chevron, Oracle, SpaceX, and Tesla.

What is California’s workforce like?

According to the California Employment Development Department, the state had a total of about 18 million non-agricultural workers at the end of 2025, of which about 16 million worked in service industries such as retail, health care, transportation, food services, leisure and hospitality. A little over 2 million workers were involved in construction or manufacturing.

California workers produced more in fewer hours

Productivity statistics are based on each state’s share of current gross domestic product (in dollars), not hours worked.

Apparently, California workers are working smarter, not harder, because their hours have decreased over the past few years. According to the department, state residents worked fewer hours in 2025 than in any year since the pandemic (27.884 billion total hours).

The report, released on May 28, also includes “long-term trends” showing data from 2007 to 2025 and 2019 to 2025. California ranked third in Labor Productivity by State, Annual Rate of Change, 2007-2025, behind Washington and North Dakota.

But thanks to its population, California once again had the greatest influence on “contribution to national labor productivity,” doubling the contribution of either Texas or New York, the next most productive states on the list.

How does government measure productivity?

The bureau’s Office of Productivity and Technology measures productivity in six major sectors of the U.S. economy: business, nonfarm business, nonfinancial corporate business, general manufacturing, durable goods manufacturing, and nondurable goods manufacturing.

By comparing productivity statistics to hours worked, we can determine how efficiently each state and sector converts labor into goods and services.

Trump questions LA election security after Spencer Pratt fails to move forward

President Trump questioned Spencer Pratt’s performance in the Los Angeles mayoral race after the latter walked out after a disagreement during a “Meet the Press” interview.

play

Reality TV alum Spencer Pratt will not advance to a showdown with incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, NBC News and the Associated Press predict, as President Donald Trump publicly questions the city’s election.

Instead, Basu, a former U.S. congressman, is expected to run against his former ally, Los Angeles City Council member Nitya Raman. In a June 8 post on his platform, Truth Social, Trump promoted baseless claims about California’s election laws.

“There is no way Spencer Pratt will lose the LA runoff after holding a huge lead. Third country in the world. Election fraud!” Trump wrote. Referring to his British-born gubernatorial race, Trump added, “Now they’re going to work on a great man, Steve Hilton. The results won’t be known for probably two weeks, according to people involved.”

The comments came after Trump removed his microphone and abruptly left the June 7 interview on “Meet the Press” after a tense disagreement with host Kristen Welker over the security of California’s elections. Pratt also repeatedly questioned last weekend’s vote count, reassuring supporters that “there are still hundreds of votes left and L.A. officials have given us the next three weeks to count them,” adding, “Let’s do it!”

Mr. Pratt, who was once publicly known as the infamous 2000s reality TV villain on MTV’s hit show “The Hills,” ran a campaign criticizing Bass as incompetent and unable to address the city’s homelessness rate and drug use. But his hopes of running the nation’s second-largest city were snatched away by Mr. Raman, a progressive who ran to the left of Mr. Pratt and Mr. Bass.

According to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk, as of Monday, June 8, Bass leads the race with 34.32%, followed by Raman with 28.55% and Pratt with 25.83%. Authorities are scheduled to certify the election results on June 26.

Pratt echoed the frustration of some Angelenos after losing their homes in the city’s wildfires last year. Bass was criticized for traveling abroad to Ghana amid the looming fire situation.

Raman, who is in his second term on the Los Angeles City Council, entered the race on February 7, the last day to register. When Raman was elected in 2020, he became the first challenger to unseat an incumbent Los Angeles City Council member in 17 years.

Trump was traveling to the East Coast for the NBA Finals when NBC News and the Associated Press released their predictions in West Coast cities. He arrived at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game.

When he appeared on a video screen during the national anthem, he held up a flag and chanted “USA, USA, USA” several times before being loudly booed.

This can be done at a variety of locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Powerball tickets online depending on your local jurisdiction.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them will be white balls ranging from 1 to 69.

The red Powerball range is 1-26. You can also add a “power play” for $1. This increases the winnings for all non-jackpot prizes. “Power Play” multipliers can increase your winnings by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x.

A “Quick Pick” option is also available if you want the computer to select the numbers for you. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls with the red Powerball in any order.

Powerball drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. The winnings continue to increase even if no one wins the jackpot.

Vance says in exclusive interview that Iran will not become a ‘swamp’

The vice president’s remarks about Iran were made in an exclusive interview to coincide with the publication of his new book, Communion: Finding My Back to Faith.

play

WASHINGTON – Vice President J.D. Vance said he trusts President Donald Trump to prevent the Iran war from becoming a “quagmire” that the United States will be embroiled in for years without a mission, purpose or clear purpose.

“I don’t think we’ll be talking about U.S. involvement in Iran in a year, but I’m very confident that it’s never going to be talked about in many years,” Vance told USA TODAY in an exclusive phone interview Monday.

Vance, an Iraq War veteran and one of the administration’s most vocal skeptics of American military involvement overseas, said the U.S. operation in Iran would be different from the protracted wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, even as negotiations to end the conflict continue with no end in sight.

“I don’t think the president would do something like that,” Vance said.

This week marks the 100th day of the armed conflict, which began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched a joint bombing campaign in Iran. From April, The war is at a ceasefire, and U.S. officials, including Vance, have sought limited outcomes to move forward with a comprehensive peace deal.

President Trump has repeatedly teased that a deal is near, but negotiations have stalled after both countries launched attacks, including the U.S. military’s announcement on June 5 that it shot down Iranian missiles and drones. Israel and Iran have also exchanged attacks in recent days, further threatening the fraying ceasefire.

Gasoline prices in the United States have risen sharply due to the war, and President Trump’s approval ratings have declined, raising concerns among Republican politicians.

Various “means” if diplomacy fails

Vance did not rule out the possibility of escalating military fighting before the war ends if months of negotiations fail to reach an agreement.

“I think we’ll be successful,” Vance told USA TODAY. “If this diplomacy ultimately breaks down, the president has additional tools at his disposal. But as long as we keep this firmly rooted in our core mission: preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, things won’t turn into a quagmire.”

The vice president’s remarks were made during a telephone interview in conjunction with the publication of his new book, “Communion: Finding My Back to Faith.” The book, scheduled for release on June 16, is a sequel to Vance’s best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy.

In “Communion,” Vance reflects on his religious journey while commenting on policy and politics..

Experts pick 6 safe used midsize SUVs for teens for under $10,000

  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports have released a list of used cars that are safe for teen drivers.
  • Recommended cars and SUVs can typically be purchased for less than $10,000.
  • Featured models include the Volvo XC90, GMC Terrain, and Nissan Murano.

If you’re looking to buy a safe used SUV for your newly licensed teen driver for less than $10,000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports have you covered.

The organization recently released a list of 45 used cars and SUVs that typically cost less than $10,000, perform well in crash tests, and have highly rated headlights and automatic emergency braking systems that can detect pedestrians.

“Driving poses additional risks for teens, which is why we curate this annual list specifically for teens,” IIHS senior researcher Rebecca West said in a statement. “That said, this proposition is suitable for drivers of all ages looking for a balance between affordability and crash protection and avoidance.”

“A first car is a big milestone for a teenager,” Emily Thomas, Consumer Reports’ associate director of auto safety, said in a statement. “Whether you’re buying a car or deciding which car your family should start driving, these lists can help parents make confident choices without sacrificing safety.”

The USA TODAY Cars team has researched the group’s listings and compiled information for consumers on featured models.

1.Volvo XC90

Recommended model year: 2013-2024

Median used price: $6,000

What they said: Car and Driver said in its review, “Despite entering its ninth model year, the 2024 XC90 remains one of the sharpest-looking midsize luxury SUVs on the market. The same is true of the XC90’s cabin, which benefits from a simple, modern interior design complemented by a rich selection of materials.”

2.GMC Terrain

Recommended model year: 2014-2020

Median used price: $6,400

What they said: MotorTrend said in its review that there are plenty of choices in today’s small crossover market, from entry-level economy options to high-end luxury vehicles. The Terrain aims for a premium feel with the charm of an American brand, although it’s not quite as cheap as lower-end models or as luxurious as the top end.

3. Volvo XC60

Recommended model year: 2013-2021

Median used price: $6,400

What they said: Kelley Blue Book said in its review that “reasons that draw buyers to Volvo dealerships include comprehensive safety features, sophisticated powertrains (including one engine that uses both types of forced induction, or a plug-in hybrid for increased fuel efficiency).”

4. Nissan Murano

Recommended model year: 2015-2020

Median used price: $8,100

What they said: “The 2020 Nissan Murano stands out with its striking exterior design and comfortable seats,” Edmunds said in his review. “It also has a powerful engine. But that style comes at a price. The sloping roofline impedes rearward visibility, making the Murano feel larger than it is.”

5. Kia Sorento

Recommended model year: 2016-2018

Median used price: $8,200

What they said: “If you’re looking for a capable, flexible and comfortable two- or three-row crossover, the Kia Sorento is a solid choice. Five or seven rows of seating, three engines, and both front- and all-wheel drive variants mean there’s a Sorento to suit every taste,” Car and Driver said in its review.

6. Audi Q5

Recommended model year: 2015-2025. Built after January 2015

Median used price: $9,800

What they said: “Audi’s best-selling model is the Q5, and for good reason — this compact SUV offers a compelling combination of design, luxury, technology, versatility, and performance,” MotorTrend said in its review.

President Trump selects former personal attorney Todd Branch as attorney general

President Donald Trump has nominated former personal defense attorney Todd Blanche to lead the Justice Department permanently.

play

President Donald Trump has nominated former personal attorney Todd Branch to be his permanent attorney general, weeks after Branch, as acting attorney general, signaled a willingness to pursue new legal strategies and boundary-pushing policies to advance Trump’s agenda.

Since becoming acting attorney general in early April, Blanche has overseen the Justice Department’s new prosecution of President Trump’s target James Comey and the department’s efforts to create a so-called “anti-weaponization fund” that could pay rewards to Trump supporters convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

President Trump said at a private dinner in the White House Rose Garden on June 3 that he plans to nominate Branch to the permanent committee that oversees the Justice Department. The White House formally announced the nomination in a news release on June 8, announcing that Branch’s nomination now goes to the Senate, which will decide whether Branch is confirmed to the position.

Leading Democratic politicians voiced their opposition to Blanche’s nomination on June 8, but unless they have several Republican members on their side, they will not be able to vote to reject Blanche’s nomination.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, posted on social media: “Todd Blanche is not a neutral law enforcement officer. He has never relinquished his primary role as Donald Trump’s chief defender in court.”

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, was quick to voice his support for Branch in a June 8 statement, saying he is “well qualified and dedicated to restoring law and order across our country.”

Blanche served as Trump’s personal attorney in several cases, including the Manhattan criminal trial in which Trump was convicted of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Trump appealed the ruling before being appointed deputy attorney general by President Donald Trump in 2025.

Blanche said the Justice Department would not move forward with creating the so-called “anti-weaponization fund” because it faced stiff resistance from lawmakers of both parties. Lawmakers from both parties were concerned that tax dollars would be used to reward Trump’s allies, which could include participants in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Mr. Blanche defended the Justice Department’s efforts under his leadership to pursue the latest indictment against Mr. Comey, following the dismissal of a lawsuit filed under President Trump’s most recent administration under the first permanent attorney general, Pam Bondi.

The new lawsuit alleges that Comey threatened to harm or kill President Donald Trump by posting an image of a seashell in the shape of “8647” on social media, prompting widespread criticism, including from voices in the conservative legal community.

Comey shared the post, then deleted it shortly after, saying in a new post that he “didn’t realize that some people would associate these numbers with violence” and that he deleted the post because he opposed “violence of any kind.”

Trump specifically called for criminal charges against Comey, a longtime critic of the president, for his September 2025 social media posts. Comey served as FBI director during the Trump administration, but was fired by the president in 2017.

Mr. Blanche has also, under his leadership, defended the Justice Department against charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has drawn the ire of conservatives in recent years.

The case alleges that the center committed fraud by telling donors that it was soliciting donations to dismantle extremist groups, and then using some of those donations to pay informants for extremist groups. Many legal experts say the charges are unusual and could be difficult to prove.

Where you can see Venus and Jupiter kissing in the sky

Stargazers, look up – a planetary “kiss” will occur on June 9th.

About 45 minutes after sunset on June 9, the two brightest planets, Jupiter and Venus, will be visible to the naked eye. Mercury is also nearby. They will appear at the closest point of convergence at 9:35 p.m. ET, according to EarthSky. The planets follow the ecliptic plane, an imaginary line in the sky that marks the path of the sun. The moon and planets follow this same line.

Venus and Jupiter seem to align about once every 13 months. Therefore, the next time it will be seen in the sky will be on August 5, 2027, but it will be obscured by sunlight. The next visible rendezvous is expected to occur on November 10, 2028, according to SkyandTelescope.

Don’t see the graphic? Click here to view it.

How to get the best views

According to SkyandTelescope, using binoculars can help. Although both planets fall within the same field of view, it is advisable to view this celestial sight without magnification. So all you have to do is use your eyes.

celestial illusion

Venus and Jupiter may look close in the sky, but they are actually millions of miles apart.

Jupiter orbits beyond Earth in our solar system, so it is much further away. During the conjunction, Jupiter will be approximately 558 million miles from Earth, which is nearly six times the distance between Earth and the Sun. According to Live Science, Venus orbits closer to the sun than Earth, coming in at about 112 million miles closer to Earth, or about five times closer than Jupiter.

Seen from Earth, Venus appears to be rising and Jupiter is descending, flying close together in the night sky.

Apple Announces Liquid Glass Update with iOS 27 at WWDC

0

play

Apple users will soon have more control over how liquid glass designs appear on their devices.

On Monday, June 8, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote, Apple announced that users will now be able to further customize the Liquid Glass interface that the company introduced last year.

In iOS 27, the new software Apple announced at the conference, the default liquid glass interface will further diffuse background content and create more depth for foreground content, Shubham Kedia, Apple’s director of human interfaces, said in a presentation.

As part of the update, users of iOS 27, which rolls out this fall, will be able to use a new slider scale in the Settings app that ranges from “ultra clear” to “fully tinted,” Kedia explained. So users who prefer liquid glass can see it more clearly, and users who prefer the old Apple interface can get something closer to what they’re used to.

In addition to enhanced user control, Liquid Glass also extends to app design. In iOS 27, each Apple app has a liquid glass appearance.

What is liquid glass?

Introduced at WWDC in 2025, Liquid Glass is a translucent feature that reflects and refracts its surroundings like glass, and, according to Apple, “dynamically transforms into Hep to draw attention to your content.”

The liquid glass interface interacts with Apple product buttons, sliders, text, media controls, tab bars, and app navigation.

When will the new liquid glass update be available?

The new customizable liquid glass interface is now available in iOS 27, with public beta in July and general availability later this fall.

Reactions to liquid glass design

When Liquid Glass was launched, some Apple users embraced it, while others expressed distaste for the new design. More notable concerns were about the readability of notifications and the distortion of images behind the undulating, bubble-like app outlines.

“The new liquid glass looks terrible and is a perfect example of the focus on form, cuteness, and design over functionality, legibility, and practicality. What are you doing here?” one X user wrote in a June 2025 post.

Some thought the new design could not have surpassed that of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

“Steve Jobs very famously said that design isn’t about how it looks, it’s about how it works… His thoughts on liquid glass would have been interesting,” wrote one X user, citing the founder’s famous quote.

I went to see the renovated reflecting pool. Here’s what stood out

play

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool continues to reflect the Washington Monument after more than a month of renovations that included redoing the pool sinks.

On Monday, June 8th, I visited the monument to see the progress of the construction project that started in April. President Donald Trump hired a pool contractor to do the work, according to a lawsuit filed May 11 by the Cultural Landscape Foundation with the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The complaint takes issue with the color of the basin, which the group says has been a feature of the pool since it opened in 1924. The basin in the reflecting pool was previously painted a neutral gray color.

The nonprofit organization, citing the National Park Service’s Cultural Landscape Report published in August 1999, said the previous colors created the illusion of greater depth and deeper reflections.

In an emailed statement to USA TODAY, the National Park Service said it painted the basin “American flag blue,” or a deep navy. The agency said the color will improve the pool’s reflectivity compared to the existing gray concrete.

According to the agency, concrete collects algae and turns a slimy green color.

Before it had a concrete bottom, the pool was black asphalt. The agency said in some areas the water had been dyed to improve reflection.

How was the pool on Monday June 8th?

On Monday, the pool provided a decent reflection of the monument as it continued to fill with water. Additionally, some construction workers were seen wearing “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hats.

In a June 4 X post, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum shared a photo of the Reflecting Pool with the Washington Monument glistening in the water, indicating that despite the new color, the Reflecting Pool will maintain its purpose.

The number of measles cases is increasing at a pace that will surpass the highest rate in 30 years by 2025. See map

In six months, 2026 is on track to set a record for the most measles cases recorded in the United States since the highly contagious disease was eliminated from the country nearly 30 years ago.

As of June 4, approximately 2,030 measles cases from 30 separate outbreaks have reached 38 states and Washington, D.C., and at least 127 people have been hospitalized since the beginning of 2026, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority, 92%, occurred in unvaccinated people, and 72% occurred in children under 19 years of age.

At this pace with only six months left, 2026 will blow away 2025.

The number of infections is expected to reach a 30-year high in 2025, with 2,242 confirmed cases across 45 jurisdictions throughout the year. Almost 90% of cases were directly linked to 45 known outbreaks, and 93% of infections were transmitted by people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. The outbreak killed three people, including two children, and was the first child death due to measles in 10 years.

Here’s what you need to know as cases rapidly move towards a grim new milestone in 2026.

Number of measles cases by state

As of June 4, 2026, 2,030 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States. Ten of them were from overseas travelers. The remaining 2,020 cases occurred in 38 states and Washington, DC.

What is measles and how is it transmitted?

Measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease caused by a virus that primarily affects children the most. According to the World Health Organization, it infects the respiratory tract before spreading throughout the body. It is characterized by a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a rash or bumps that appear 7 to 14 days after exposure.

Viruses are among the most contagious infectious diseases. In fact, it is so contagious that 90% of unvaccinated people will become infected. Additionally, 1 in 5 people will be hospitalized, according to the CDC.

The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) prevents measles with 97% efficacy and is usually given to children as part of a routine vaccination course, with the first dose between 12 and 15 months of age and the second dose between 4 and 6 years of age.

Why are the number of measles infections increasing?

MMR vaccination coverage has declined in recent years, resulting in more states not reporting coverage consistent with herd immunity. If more than 95% of people in a community are vaccinated, most people will be protected even if they cannot get the vaccine because those around them are immune and cannot spread the disease.

According to the CDC, vaccination rates among U.S. kindergarteners decreased from 95.2% in the 2019-2020 school year to 92.5% in the 2024-2025 school year, well below the threshold needed for effective herd immunity.

Outbreaks like the one in Texas in 2025 often occur in communities with large populations of unvaccinated people. For example, small, poorly vaccinated Mennonite communities were at the center of some of the largest outbreaks last year.

The decline in vaccinations has also been blamed on a growing anti-vaccination movement, fueled by the confirmation of vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of health. In addition to his anti-vaccination rhetoric, President Kennedy downplayed measles-related childhood deaths and promoted false treatments and prevention methods, such as the use of vitamin A. At the height of the epidemic in 2025, it backed off somewhat from its anti-vaccination message and encouraged measles vaccination.

Plummeting vaccination rates and a subsequent resurgence in cases are putting the United States at risk of losing its measles-free status. The WHO’s definition is that a disease does not continue to spread for at least one year, and reaching elimination status is what the CDC calls a “historic public health achievement.”

The Pan American Health Organization, part of the World Health Organization that tracks infectious diseases in the Americas, is scheduled to review the measles elimination status of the United States and Mexico in November, moving forward from the originally scheduled April date. The organization said in a statement that the U.S. review will be based on the 2025 outbreak. PAHO already lifted Canada’s exempt status in November for the first time in 30 years.

Experts pick 12 safe used small SUVs for teens under $10,000

If you’re looking to buy a safe used SUV for your newly licensed teen driver for less than $10,000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports have you covered.

The organization recently released a list of 45 used cars and SUVs that typically cost less than $10,000 and performed well in crash tests. The automatic emergency braking system that detects headlights and pedestrians is also popular.

1.Chevrolet Equinox

Recommended model year: 2014-2024

Median used price: $5,700

What they said: “In one of the most popular segments on the market, the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox is just a mere presence. Its spacious interior and intuitive technology suite are let down by a disappointing drivetrain that is neither smooth nor responsive,” MotorTrend said in its review.

2.Fiat 500X

Recommended model year: From 2016 to 2018. Built after July 2015

Median used price: $5,700

What they said: “The 2018 500X is as affordable as other small crossovers, but the Fiat 500-inspired exterior design, quality interior materials, and efficient use of interior space are enough to make this one of our favorites in its class,” Edmunds said in his review.

3. Nissan Rogue

Recommended model year: 2014-2020

Median used price: $5,900

What they said: In its review, Car and Driver said, “The 2020 Rogue underperforms compared to many more desirable alternatives in the (compact crossover) segment. Its four-cylinder engine struggles to move the heavy crossover and feels hard to drive. But it offers a docile ride and plenty of passenger space.”

4. Hyundai Tucson

Recommended model year: 2016-2021

Median used price: $7,100

What they said: Kelley Blue Book said in its review that the Hyundai Tucson has an “unparalleled 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Tucson also offers a more powerful engine and all-wheel drive, but many rivals can make similar claims.”

5. Audi Q3

Recommended model year: 2015-2025

Median used price: $7,200

What they said: “The 2025 Audi Q3 is one of the least expensive luxury subcompact SUVs in its segment, but it strikes a good balance between comfort and practicality,” Car and Driver said in its review.

6.Jeep compass

Recommended model year: 2017-2022, manufactured after December 2016

Median used price: $7,600

What they said: In his review, Edmunds said the 2022 Jeep Compass “stands out against rivals like the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Hyundai Tucson with above-average off-road performance.”

7. Kia Niro Hybrid

Recommended model year: 2017-2022

Median used price: $7,800

What they said: “The 2022 Kia Niro is available with three fuel-efficient powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric, paired with a practical hatchback body,” U.S. News & World Report said in its review.

8.Mazda CX-5

Recommended model year: 2014 to 2017. Built after October 2013

Median used price: $8,400

What they said: “The 2022 Kia Niro is available with three fuel-efficient powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric, paired with a practical hatchback body,” U.S. News & World Report said in its review.

9.BMW X1

Recommended model year: 2016-2025

Median used price: $8,600

What they said: “The 2025 BMW X1 may be the least expensive SUV in the German automaker’s lineup, but it doesn’t feel that way. The X1 is packed with desirable technology and comfort features,” Edmunds said in his review.

10.Kia Sportage

Recommended model year: 2017-2025

Median used price: $8,600

What they said: In its review, Car and Driver said, “The Kia Sportage offers an extensive list of standard features and an attractive array of options, as well as versatility and space at an affordable price.”

11.Mazda CX-3

Recommended model year: 2016-2019

Median used price: $9,000

What they said: MotorTrend said in its review that “interior and exterior enhancements refresh the 2019 CX-3, including a new grille design, LED taillight design, electric parking brake, new rear center armrest with cupholders, and redesigned seats.”

12. Nissan Rogue Sport

Recommended model year: 2017

Median used price: $9,100

What they said: “Although smaller and less powerful than the standard Rogue, the new Rogue Sport seats five (without an optional third row), is shorter than the standard Rogue, looks sleeker, and has plenty of cargo space. It’s essentially an even more compact version of an already compact crossover,” Edmunds said in his review.

When is President Trump’s 80th birthday? What you need to know about his big day

With President Donald Trump’s birthday just around the corner, preparations are in full swing for UFC Freedom 250, scheduled to be held on the South Lawn of the White House.

The battle in the nation’s capital commemorates the nation’s 250th anniversary, and will be held on the same day as President Trump’s birthday and Flag Day.

However, it is not all smooth sailing as there is a possibility of the event being canceled due to rain. In an interview with USA TODAY, The Weather Channel’s Jennifer Gray said the chance of thunderstorms on game night is “like flipping a coin.”

Trump, who turns 80 this year, becomes the second U.S. president to reach that age while in office. What about the other one? Former President Joe Biden was repeatedly mocked by President Trump with the nickname “Sleepy Joe.”

Here’s what you need to know ahead of President Trump’s big day.

When is President Trump’s 80th birthday?

Mr. Trump was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1946.

“I’m happy to share my birthday with the Stars and Stripes and the U.S. military,” he said in a 2017 Flag Day news release.

Health concerns rise ahead of President Trump’s birthday

As President Trump approaches his 80th birthday, there are growing concerns about his health.

An April Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 55% of U.S. adults do not believe President Trump is “in good physical health to effectively serve as president,” up from 28% in 2023. Nearly six in 10 also believe the president does not have the “mental acuity” necessary for the job.

Despite the criticism, the president’s doctor has repeatedly said Trump is “perfectly qualified” to be president, and White House press secretary Davis Ingle said his energy is “unparalleled.”

“President Trump is the sharpest and most approachable president in American history, working tirelessly to solve problems and deliver on his promises, and is in excellent health,” Ingle said.
