Supreme Court restores mail-order access to mifepristone

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on May 4 reinstated mail-order access for the widely used abortion drug mifepristone, in a tentative decision that gives the justices time to consider the issue.

The court intervened after the Food and Drug Administration was ordered on May 1 to reinstate a requirement that doctors prescribe drugs only after an in-person examination. It was the first time that access to mifepristone had been significantly restricted in the years-long legal battle over mifepristone, which was first approved in 2000.

At the drug company’s request, Justice Samuel Alito put the lower court’s restrictive ruling on hold until May 11 while the en banc court decides what the rules for mifepristone should be as Louisiana challenges expanded access.

“While this is a positive development in the short term, no one can rest assured when access to safe and effective drugs to treat abortion and miscarriage remains at risk,” Julia Kay, senior staff attorney at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, said in a statement. “The Supreme Court must end this baseless attack on our reproductive freedom once and for all.”

State officials argue that allowing the drug to be mailed ignores the threat of complications from mifepristone, such as sepsis and bleeding. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also said women could circumvent the abortion ban by mailing the drugs.

In the May 1st ruling, conservativesth The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Louisiana likely would prevail on the challenge and blocked mail-order access for now.

Danko Laboratories, which makes Mifeprex, the brand-name version of mifepristone, said the decision caused “instant confusion and upheaval in critical medical decisions.”

Danko also told the Supreme Court that Louisiana’s complaint should be dismissed for the same reasons the justices rejected a similar lawsuit brought by anti-abortion doctors in 2024.

In that case, the court said the doctors could not sue because they had not shown they were sufficiently harmed by the FDA’s loosening of mifepristone regulations in 2023.

Louisiana argues that making mifepristone more readily available to women in the state would undermine the state’s ability to enforce anti-abortion laws. State officials also said Louisiana’s Medicaid program had to pay $92,000 for emergency treatment for two women who developed complications after taking mifepristone.

Danko said the Supreme Court rejected similar arguments for downstream economic harm in rejecting anti-abortion doctors’ lawsuits.

Several Republican-led states, including states that largely ban abortions, are trying to make it harder for women to access mifepristone, a pill used in nearly two-thirds of abortions nationwide.

But GenBiopro, which makes the generic Mifeprex drug, told the Supreme Court on appeal that “Louisiana is the only state seeking such drastic preliminary relief.”

The Trump administration’s FDA is currently reviewing the drug’s safety. Abortion rights groups called the review a sham and insisted the science behind the agency’s previous decisions was sound.

In January, the administration asked a judge to suspend Louisiana’s challenge until the FDA’s review is complete.

A federal judge agreed. But the appeals court blocked that ruling, saying the in-person dispensing requirement should be reinstated while Louisiana appeals the judge’s decision.

Americans fear death, but not as much as this post-retirement setback

0

play

If there’s anything Americans fear more than death, it may be living longer than they can save.

This is one of the findings of an annual survey by the Allianz Center for the Future of Retirement. It found that 67% of Americans are more worried about running out of money than death.

The survey reflects a sense that Americans may be less concerned about dying and more preoccupied with the economic consequences of staying alive.

“The money is running out,” said Kelly Lavigne, vice president of consumer insights at Allianz. “It’s about not being able to afford health care. It’s about not being able to afford long-term care.”

An Allianz survey released in late April asked Americans to choose the greater of two concerns. Death and lack of money. In the last five annual surveys, “lack of funding” has consistently prevailed. This year, profit margins were higher than ever. The survey was conducted among 1,000 adults ages 25 and older with household incomes of at least $50,000 or investable assets of at least $150,000.

There are several economic and socio-economic reasons why Americans have recently become more concerned about living longer than money. People’s lifespans have increased. Inflation remains high. Medical and long-term care costs are rising. Fewer workers are retiring with pensions that provide a guaranteed source of income.

Taken together, these factors raise expectations about how much money the average American will need to fund even a modest retirement.

“We’re starting to hear that people need $1.4 million to retire comfortably,” said David John, senior strategic policy advisor at AARP’s Public Policy Institute. “People see big numbers, and what the big numbers do or don’t really apply to them. But that’s what scares people.”

Biggest worry after retirement: Money, money, money

In a broader retirement study also released in April, the Transamerica Retirement Research Center ranked America’s top retirement fears. Most of them were about money. The top three are:

  • Declining health condition requiring long-term care (said by 39% of respondents)
  • Social security reduction (38%)
  • Survive by saving and investing (36%)

“The economic burden facing Americans cannot be overestimated,” said Transamerica Center CEO Katherine Collinson.

Hard data supports these concerns.

Long-term care costs are increasing. The average assisted living facility currently costs $6,200 per month, according to CareScout.

Social Security could face a shortage as early as 2032. If Congress does nothing, research suggests retirees will see their monthly benefits cut by 28%.

Life expectancy at birth will reach an all-time high of 79 years in 2024, according to the Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker. Living longer increases your chances of living longer than money, which often increases the cost of care.

“While life expectancy and longevity have increased significantly in recent decades, this does not necessarily mean that healthy life expectancy has increased,” Collinson said.

Retirement experts say living beyond your savings is a terrible fear. Here are some financial moves you can make to alleviate that.

Delay in claiming social security

It’s tempting to start collecting Social Security at age 62, when most retirees become eligible for Social Security. But there are good reasons to wait.

Each time you postpone enrolling in Social Security, your monthly benefits increase until age 70. Economists make a convincing case, based on human lifespans, that if you wait, you’ll earn more money over your lifetime.

“The closer you are to age 70 by the time you file a claim, the higher your lifetime benefits will be,” said AARP’s John. “The more basic necessities that can be covered by Social Security, the better off you will be.”

Make the most of your retirement savings

Thanks to recent changes in federal law, workers nearing retirement age can now save more than ever in a 401(k) or IRA account.

Employees with 401(k) plans can contribute up to $24,500 in 2026. Savers age 50 and older can make additional “catch-up” contributions of up to $8,000, increasing their total contributions to $32,500. There is an even higher ‘super catch-up contribution’ limit of $11,250 for workers aged 60, 61, 62 and 63.

IRA contribution limits are relatively loose. The 2026 cap is $7,500. The catch-up contribution limit for older savers is $1,100, for a total contribution of $8,600.

make a retirement plan

Clearly, many Americans are worried about retirement. But you may not be spending enough time planning it.

According to a report by the Transamerica Center, only 29% of Americans regularly engage in retirement planning, and only 31% work with a professional financial advisor.

Retirement planning may begin by visiting the Social Security website. There, you can get personalized estimates of your monthly benefit check if you retire at various ages.

You can then tally up your main expenses: your monthly spending on food, housing, transportation, and other necessities.

Compare your monthly expenses to your expected Social Security benefits. Next, consider what other sources of income you have and see how they match up.

Retirement experts say working with a professional advisor makes all of these calculations much easier.

Mr Collinson said: “It may be helpful to consult a financial advisor because they have worked with hundreds or thousands of clients and have experience in what the potential risks and potential outcomes are.”

Consider long-term care insurance

There are various types of long-term care insurance. Costs vary widely depending on the amount of benefits, the length of care covered, and other variables.

The National Council on Aging reported in 2025 that a typical policy that provides $165,000 in benefits to a single adult aged 55 could cost a man $950 a year and a woman $1,500.

“If you can afford long-term care insurance and you can find someone to write it for you, long-term care insurance is the best answer,” Allianz’s Lavigne said.

Another option is to purchase life insurance with a long-term care rider. This allows some or all of the death benefit to be used to cover long-term care.

Michigan Supreme Court to hear unusual case between legislatures

0

Michigan’s recent lame-duck legislative session was very active, with the state Senate passing dozens of bills in a marathon 29-hour session before the legislative session adjourned. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ultimately signed most of the bills into law, but nine of the bills that passed did not reach her desk at the end of the legislative session. When Republicans gained a new majority in the Michigan House of Representatives in January, the speaker blocked the bill from being sent to the governor, angering the state Senate, which still held a Democratic majority, and ultimately leading to a lawsuit.

Discussions in litigation between legislative chambers; Michigan Senate vs. Michigan House of Representatives, The case is scheduled to be heard by the Michigan Supreme Court in May. The lawsuit will determine whether all passed bills must be sent to the governor. Alternatively, one legislative chamber, or one legislative leader, can block a passed bill from being sent to the governor and prevent it from becoming law. The answer will immediately decide the fate of the nine bills at issue, including some pro-labor bills supported by Democrats and opposed by Republicans, but the Senate sees the case more broadly as about the rule of law in Michigan.

At the heart of the lawsuit is a provision in the Michigan Constitution that governs how a bill becomes law. That provision provides that “Every bill passed by the Legislature shall be submitted to the Governor before becoming law, and the Governor shall have a period of fourteen days for consideration, measured in hours and minutes from the time of submission.” The House and Senate disagree on whether this language imposes a requirement to present all bills passed and, if so, whether courts can enforce such a requirement.

Lower courts agreed with the Senate that constitutional provisions create a duty to introduce passed legislation, but reached different conclusions about remedies. A state trial court ruled that the state constitution is “unambiguous” in creating a duty to submit passed laws to Congress. However, Congress declined to order the House to do so on the grounds that the determination of which particular legislative staff must make the presentation is governed by internal legislative rules and that “prudent concerns” weigh against the judicial enforcement of such internal proceedings.

The appeals court agreed that the state constitution provides a requirement to introduce the bill. Although the committee acknowledged that the House’s interpretation of the constitutional provision was “singularly debatable,” debate at the 1961 state constitutional convention found that the Senate’s interpretation was supported. The committee also rejected the House’s argument that the filing requirement applied only to the Congress that passed the bill, finding no support for this interpretation in the constitutional text. Instead, the committee pointed to discussions at the convention that indicated delegates understood that printing a bill could take several weeks (possibly extending beyond the end of the legislative session) and that such a bill would be submitted to the governor “as soon as practicable.”

Turning to the issue of relief, the Court of Appeal reversed the trial court’s decision not to enforce the filing requirement. The committee argued that it was “undisputed” that “the duty rests with the Legislature” to introduce passed legislation, and that “the only chamber that can introduce these particular bills is the House of Representatives, because it currently owns the bills.” The appeals court also rejected separation of powers concerns, citing a landmark 2022 Michigan Supreme Court decision regarding constitutional rights remedies. Bauserman v. Unemployment Insurance Administration -He argued that in order for constitutional rights to be “more than words on paper,” they “must be enforceable.”

The House has also raised procedural arguments, arguing that the Senate lacks standing to sue the House and that the case presents an unfair political question that the courts should not decide. Lower courts have rejected both arguments, but the Michigan Supreme Court will consider them.

Beyond the immediate question of whether the nine bills will be sent to the governor, the case also has implications for Michigan’s constitutional structure. If the Supreme Court sides with the House, legislative leaders could have greater power to block bills passed by majorities in both chambers. If the court sided with the Senate, that principle would be strengthened. Bauserman Courts have the power to enforce constitutional requirements, even in the context of legislative action.

Michigan is not the first state to face this problem. In other states with similarly worded constitutional provisions, disputes have arisen over whether the Legislature must send passed bills to the governor. Courts in Nevada and Ohio have determined that filing is mandatory and have issued or approved writs of mandatory filing. Courts in Arizona and New York also held that presentation is required, but cited the unique circumstances of those cases as counseling against full relief. In Arizona, lawmakers have pledged to introduce a pending bill if they lose a lawsuit, eliminating the need for courts to issue relief. In New York, this problematic practice dates back more than a century and raised concerns about the unintended consequences of retroactive relief. In contrast, the New Jersey Supreme Court held that such disputes presented unfair political questions.

The Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Wednesday, May 6 at 10 a.m. ET. The discussion can be seen here. The court can resolve the case with a formal opinion or simply dismiss the House’s appeal and leave the appellate court’s decision in place.

Modi’s party makes great strides in Indian state elections

0

Mr. Modi has campaigned extensively in West Bengal for weeks, focusing on illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who he calls his allies.

play

MUMBAI – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party is on track to win two of four key state elections on Monday, expanding its influence and weakening its main rival midway through his third term in office.

Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to return to power in the eastern state of Assam for a third consecutive term, and is dominating West Bengal, data on the Election Commission’s website showed. Both states share a border with Bangladesh, and infiltration into India was a key issue in the polls.

The BJP has never ruled West Bengal, which had only three local councilors until 2021.

Prime Minister Modi, his closest aide, Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have waged a wide-ranging campaign in West Bengal for weeks, focusing on what they call illegal immigration from Bangladesh and the local economy, which has faltered under incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee is a fierce critic of Modi and a key member of the Indian opposition alliance. She has held state power since 2011.

Bond traders said 10-year bond yields fell 2 basis points to 6.9954%, as positive developments in the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal also boosted market sentiment.

deal a blow to the opposition coalition

In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, a major electronics and automobile hub, Joseph Vijay, a popular film star who first entered politics by starting a party just two years ago, appeared to be on track to oust the ruling DMK party.

The actor, who goes by the single name Vijay, has a devoted following in the state, which has a history of electing movie stars to top government jobs.

In the other southern state of Kerala, the Congress-led alliance was expected to defeat the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The DMK is also a vocal rival of Mr. Modi, and the DMK and Banerjee’s ruling TMC party were the mainstays of the Congress-led opposition Alliance of India. The alliance jointly contested the 2024 general election and deprived Mr. Modi of a majority, forcing him to rely on support from regional parties to form a coalition government.

Their defeat is expected to significantly weaken opposition to Mr. Modi in 2029, when he will seek a record fourth term in power.

The final results are expected to be known by Monday night, but the results are not expected to have an immediate impact on federal politics or policy.

Three people killed due to suspected hantavirus infection on Atlantic cruise ship: WHO

0

play

The World Health Organization announced on May 3 that three people aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic have died from suspected hantavirus infection, a rodent-borne virus that can cause a potentially fatal respiratory disease.

“To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory-confirmed and five additional cases are suspected,” the group announced on X. “Three of the six infected people have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.”

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Netherlands-based expedition cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions said it was dealing with a “serious medical situation” aboard the m/v Hondius. The ship was on its way from Argentina to Cape Verde, an island nation off the west coast of Africa.

“Three passengers died during this voyage,” the operator said in a statement. “Two of these deaths occurred on board and one occurred after disembarking. Additionally, one passenger is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg and two people on board require critical treatment.”

Two Dutch passengers were killed, Reuters reported, citing a spokesperson for the Dutch Foreign Ministry. No further details were disclosed.

Oceanwide Expeditions said the cause of the infection was under investigation, but noted that a strain of hantavirus had been identified in a passenger who was medically evacuated from the cruise ship.

Oceanwide Expeditions said: “At this stage, it has not been established whether hantavirus is associated with the three deaths associated with this voyage.” “Hantavirus has not been confirmed in the two symptomatic individuals currently on board.”

According to Reuters, the WHO said it was investigating the outbreak.

How is hantavirus transmitted?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes hantaviruses as a family of viruses that can cause serious illness and death. The agency said hantaviruses are primarily transmitted through exposure to rodent urine, feces and saliva, and less commonly through scratches and bites.

The World Health Organization says: “Although rare, hantaviruses can spread from person to person and can cause serious respiratory illness, requiring careful patient monitoring, support and response.”

What happens if I get infected with hantavirus?

The CDC said hantaviruses can cause two syndromes. One is hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which affects the lungs, and the other is renal hemorrhagic fever syndrome (HFRS), which affects the kidneys.

Symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, headache, dizziness, chills, and abdominal illness, followed by cough, shortness of breath, and sometimes “a feeling of tightness in the chest as the lungs fill with fluid,” according to the CDC.

Symptoms of HFRS include severe headache, back or abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, blurred vision, facial flushing, redness or irritation of the eyes, and rash, which can be followed by low blood pressure, acute shock due to decreased blood flow, internal bleeding, and “acute renal failure that can cause severe fluid overload,” the CDC said.

The World Health Organization did not specify the type or syndrome of hantavirus in the cruise accident, but did note the respiratory risks.

The CDC said HPS can be fatal for 38% of people who develop respiratory symptoms. According to the CDC, the fatality rate for HFRS ranges from less than 1% to up to 15%, depending on the specific virus involved.

As the end of the school year approaches, National Teacher Appreciation Week, held from Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8, provides an opportunity to thank educators.

The 2025-2026 school calendar may end in the coming weeks, but that doesn’t mean it’s a vacation period for all teachers. More than a fifth (21%) of K-12 teachers say they find it difficult to survive on their teacher salary, according to a Gallup poll of more than 2,000 U.S. teachers conducted Oct. 16 to Nov. 11. Released in May 2025 and March 2026.

Side jobs are common, with nearly half (46%) of financially strapped teachers saying they have a second job unrelated to teaching, the survey found. Most part-time teachers (85%) say they work a second job at least partially during the school year. According to Gallup, “side jobs are more than just ‘summer jobs’ that teachers do while they’re away from teaching.”

According to the National Education Association’s website, National Teacher’s Day, Tuesday, May 5, was born in 1953 from then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s lobbying efforts in Congress. The NEA then established National Teacher Appreciation Week in 1985.

For ideas on how to show appreciation to your favorite teachers, visit the National PTA and NEA websites and the We Are Teachers site. All these sites have ideas and projects.

Many restaurants and businesses will be offering sales and specials for teachers and gift specials for educators this week. Here’s a summary.

Chipotle free meal offer

Teachers and educators have a chance to win one of 100,000 free meals as part of Chipotle Mexican Grill’s Teacher Appreciation Week benefit. Through May 12, teachers can visit Chipotle’s Teacher Thanks website and enter their name and email address for a chance to win an e-gift card.

Starting May 13th, randomly selected winners will be notified and asked to confirm their employment as an educator via ID.me within 48 hours. Those who do not provide proof of employment will be removed from the award list and another name will be chosen.

Chipotle launched a program to reward teachers in 2016 and a similar promotion for National Nursing Week, which runs from May 6 to 12. Since then, the company has distributed a total of $16 million in free food to teachers and health care workers.

“Recognizing teachers and health care workers through this program is one way we can give back in a meaningful way,” Stephanie Perdue, Chipotle’s senior vice president of brand marketing, said in a statement.

Whataburger offers free breakfast during National Teacher Appreciation Week

The San Antonio-based burger chain will be offering free breakfast to teachers and school staff nationwide from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. local time on Thursday, May 7. Promotional times may vary by store, so check with your local Whataburger for exact timings. This offer is valid for dine-in, takeout and drive-thru orders and is limited to one per person. Eligible recipient must be present for redemption.

At the restaurant chain’s online Whatastore, you can find gifts like WhataTeacher T-shirts and tote bags, and you can even gift your teacher some WhataTeacher merchandise.

As part of Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success initiative, the company will award $1,000 classroom grants to 60 teachers across 17 states.

Travelers seek answers after Spirit Airlines closure

After Spirit Airlines announced its suspension of operations on Saturday, flights were immediately canceled across the Spirit Airlines network, leaving passengers in confusion. The closure comes after years of financial difficulties, exacerbated by recent fuel price increases.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Trump administration made “huge efforts” to find a way to stop Saturday’s closure, but was unable to pull it off.

All flights have been canceled and airline customer service is no longer available. Unfortunately, there isn’t much immediate assistance available for passengers whose flights have been canceled.

Anthony Volpe sent to minor league by New York Yankees

0

play

The New York Yankees broke the American League’s best record without Anthony Volpe. And now that their shortstop is healthy enough to return, they have decided to continue without him.

The Yankees reinstated Volpe from a minor league rehab assignment and assigned him to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, May 3. It was a somewhat surprising move for a player who once seemed to be part of the club’s core.

Volpe, who turned 25 on April 28, underwent offseason surgery on his left shoulder, missed all spring training, and had a lengthy rehab assignment on the horizon. But the club did get a pleasant surprise from backup Jose Caballero, who boasts four home runs and a career-best .711 OPS.

For now, he’s in the running for the Yankees, who are 23-11 and could earn a four-game sweep against division rival Baltimore on Monday. In the bigger picture, Volpe also faces significant competition from top prospect George Lombard Jr., who was recently promoted from Class AA to AAA and is batting .304 with a .913 OPS and four home runs at two levels.

This would be a steep fall for Volpe, who was drafted 30th overall in the 2019 draft and emerged from a crowded field of promising shortstops, beating out Oswaldo Peraza for the permanent job. He hit 21 home runs and finished eighth in the 2023 Rookie of the Year voting, but his rating declined due to his career on-base percentage of .283 and defensive failures.

This allowed Caballero, acquired from Tampa Bay in July 2025, to grab the position. Caballero’s 1.3 WAR in 34 games this year is roughly on par with Volpe’s 1.6 WAR in 153 games last season.

If you get divorced after retirement, your Social Security check may be reduced.

Marital status can have a big impact on your monthly payments.

play

Many retirees rely on Social Security for a significant portion of their income, and married couples may receive higher monthly payments through spousal benefits.

However, only those who are currently married can receive spousal benefits. If you divorce (or become widowed) after you retire, your benefits may change. In some cases, you may be completely disqualified from Social Security. Here’s what retirees need to know.

How benefits change after divorce

If you divorce after retirement, you will no longer receive spousal benefits. However, you may be able to receive divorce benefits instead.

To receive divorce benefits, you and your spouse must have been married for at least 10 years. Similar to spousal benefits, the maximum amount you can receive in divorce benefits is 50% of the amount your spouse would be eligible to receive at full retirement age.

Many divorced spouses can collect the same amount from Social Security by simply switching from spousal benefits to divorce benefits after their marriage ends. However, if you have been married for less than 10 years, you may not be eligible for divorce benefits at all and may lose your spousal benefits.

Remarriage can make Social Security even more complicated.

To receive divorce benefits, you must not be currently married, so if you remarry, you will no longer be eligible for this type of Social Security. However, you can return to receiving spousal benefits based on your new partner’s work history.

However, where things get complicated is the amount you pay. Again, if you use both spousal and divorce benefits together, you can receive up to 50% of your spouse’s or ex-spouse’s full benefit.

Let’s say your ex-spouse receives $3,000 a month when he reaches retirement age. This will give you a divorce benefit of $1,500 per month. If you remarry and your new partner collects $2,000 a month, you will lose your divorce benefit and instead receive spousal benefits of only $1,000 a month.

Additionally, your partner must qualify for Social Security retirement or disability in order to qualify for spousal benefits in the first place. If you remarry and your spouse is no longer eligible for Social Security, you are not eligible to receive spousal benefits or divorce benefits.

What happens if your spouse dies?

If your spouse dies after you begin enrolling in Social Security, you will lose your spousal benefits, but you may be eligible for survivor benefits instead.

The most common recipients of survivor benefits are widows and widowers, but this type of Social Security may also be available to divorced spouses, parents, children, and other family members who were financially dependent on the deceased.

The amount you receive will largely depend on your relationship with that person, but the surviving spouse can often receive 100% of their partner’s benefits.

Social Security can be complicated, especially when there are so many types of benefits with different eligibility requirements. But by knowing which type you fall into, you can maximize your benefits and enjoy a more secure financial future.

Aviation experts say the increase in near misses highlights both the system’s strengths and risks in crowded airspace.

play

  • Recent near collisions and fatalities have raised questions about aviation safety.
  • Near midair crashes have increased by 61% since 2019, according to an analysis of federal data.
  • Experts say the airline industry often reacts to accidents rather than proactively introducing new safety technology.

On April 18, two Southwest Airlines jets passed within 500 vertical feet of each other over Nashville. Days later, two commercial planes narrowly avoided a collision at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

That’s not to mention two high-profile crashes in recent years. The 2025 fatal crash involving an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter, and the recent fatal crash at New York’s LaGuardia International Airport. Perhaps because of their rarity, aviation accidents (or near-accidents) tend to generate headlines and public outrage.

But for many travelers, accidents like this raise important questions. Are these avoided collisions a good sign that aviation safety systems are working, or is it a warning that another deadly disaster is just around the corner?

An analysis of federal data by aviation registration and tracking company AviatorDB shows a 61% increase in near-air collisions since 2019.

Experts added that while this spike is not entirely surprising, it is important that regulators take it seriously.

“There are more planes in the sky than there were 10, 20 years ago,” Laurie Garrow, a civil engineering professor specializing in aviation at Georgia Tech, told USA TODAY. “The more planes you have, the more opportunities you have to have conflict resolution.”

Mary Schiavo, a former Department of Transportation inspector general, said avoiding a collision at the last minute is better than the alternative, but still not the optimal outcome.

“We continue to have problems that require go-arounds, which means too many planes flying too close to each other,” she said. “I still think of it as a warning sign because there were so many accidents. The fact that we’re having an accident like this after two major crashes, those are warning signs and that’s what statistics are for.”

How incidents improve aviation safety

Schiavo said the aviation industry is good at learning from past accidents, but that alone is not always enough.

“It’s just ridiculous to look at statistics this bad and wait until there are deaths,” she says.

The recent fatal crash at New York’s LaGuardia International Airport has highlighted how reactionary our aviation safety system is. Schiavo said regulators have long touted technology that can warn pilots and ground vehicle operators alike that they are on a collision course. In the LaGuardia crash, an Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire truck that was crossing the runway it was scheduled to land on, killing both pilots.

Federal Aviation Administration regulations and the airport’s own guidelines do not require trucks to be equipped with devices that alert air traffic controllers to their presence on the runway.

“I have no doubt that LaGuardia and the FAA will require all fire engines to be equipped with transponders, but it doesn’t have to cost two young pilots their lives to make that happen. That mindset has to change,” Schiavo said.

Mr. Garrow agreed that aggressively demanding the adoption of new technologies is an important step in improving aviation safety.

“Making sure we’re investing in new technology, introducing communications protocols and new technologies. We’d love to see them invest in making sure these technologies are up to date and more commonplace,” she said.

Schiavo, the National Transportation Safety Board and others have warned that the FAA doesn’t always analyze accident data in a timely manner.

In its final report on the fatal mid-air collision between an Army Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet, the NTSB cited “a lack of effective data sharing and analysis between the FAA, aircraft operators, and other relevant organizations” as the primary cause.

The FAA told USA TODAY in a statement that upgrades and improvements to aviation safety systems are underway.

Last year, the FAA took two important steps to further improve the safety of the airborne public throughout the National Airspace System (NAS). Expanded the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze safety data and established an integrated safety management office. We also provide state-of-the-art air traffic control systems to U.S. airline passengers. This includes the addition of an airport surface surveillance system that allows air traffic controllers to track and identify aircraft and vehicles on runways and taxiways under all weather conditions.

The NTSB pointed to past comments by Commissioner Jennifer Homendy. Homendy previously criticized the FAA and Congress for failing to act on the FAA’s recommendations.

What is safety in aviation?

Schiavo said that while a low number of deaths is a good metric, it is not the only indicator of aviation safety. But there’s also no agreed-upon definition of what flight safety is, she says.

“All we can say is that, generally speaking, on a per-mile basis, 100 miles in a car versus 100 miles in an airplane, the airplane wins, but can we say, ‘Is it safer?'” The FAA has never defined that, Schiavo said. “(The FAA’s) line is, ‘If we say it’s safe, it’s safe to fly,’ but we know they’re not looking at the data, they don’t need the equipment, and we know they don’t have the positions to analyze that data.”

The NTSB criticized the FAA in the wake of the DCA crash for failing to recognize the danger and deploy personnel in a manner that would have prevented the crash.

Ms Garrow said air travel was the safest form of transport, but she understood why the traveling public would have questions after a high-profile incident.

“When something like this happens, I empathize with people who are nervous about getting on a plane. I think that’s a common reaction,” she said. “There are always ways to improve aviation safety.”

suggestion

One of the NTSB’s main recommendations after the crash at DCA was to require aircraft to use a system that broadcasts their position within the nation’s airspace, known as ADS-B. Congress has not yet passed legislation to make this change, but competing versions of the aviation safety bill are being considered in both chambers.

Although the investigation into the LaGuardia accident is still in its early stages, the NTSB is likely to recommend other warning systems in its final report.

Still, Schiavo and Garrow said the overall aviation system would be safer if these steps were taken proactively, rather than just after a major incident.

“It’s possible. That’s what’s so frustrating. We have the equipment. We could make it mandatory, but we don’t,” Schiavo said.

Rubio to meet with Pope Leo XIV after criticism of Trump

0

play

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to travel to Italy this week for talks with Pope Leo XIV, a senior Vatican official told USA TODAY.

The visit will be the Chicago-born pontiff’s first meeting with a senior administration official since President Donald Trump harshly criticized him last month. The Vatican official spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting has not yet been made public.

The Washington Post first reported news of the planned talks.

President Trump is at odds with the Pope’s position on the Iran war. The Vatican has also traditionally served as an intermediary with Cuba, which President Trump is considering taking over. Mr. Leo expressed concern about the growing tensions between the Trump administration and Cuba. The White House, eager to push through economic and political reforms in Cuba, imposed a de facto oil blockade on the island, pushing the country to the brink of humanitarian disaster.

In April, the Cuban government announced that it had granted amnesty to 2,010 detainees believed to have targeted the White House ahead of Easter.

Last month, President Trump criticized Leo, calling him “soft on crime” and “terrible on foreign affairs.” The remarks sparked disagreement among conservative Catholics and triggered a wave of backlash. President Trump also hinted that Leo, the first American-born pope, was elected at last year’s conclave in part as a response to his leadership.

What will layoffs mean for the job market in 2026 and which companies will be hit?

0

play

Nike, Apple and Republic National Distributing Company, a major U.S. alcohol distributor, are among the companies recently listed on USA TODAY’s Layoff Tracker, which leverages Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act filings.

The tracker captured Nike’s latest layoff filing in St. Charles, Missouri, on April 23, showing 172 layoffs as part of a broader plan to lay off 1,400 employees. On the same day, an Apple notice appeared on the tracker detailing that 78 employees would be affected by the Maryland store closure.

Republic National Distributing Company filed layoff notices in multiple locations, including Texas, South Carolina and Virginia, resulting in a total of more than 3,000 job cuts.

Four months into 2026, American companies have announced nearly 1,600 layoffs, affecting more than 128,000 workers, according to USA TODAY’s tracker. This translates to 5% fewer notifications this year compared to the same period last year. January was a tough month for workers across the country, with companies like Amazon and UPS announcing mass layoffs.

Since then, filings with WARN have shown a cooling trend as the number of affected workers declines each month, indicating the labor market is stuck in a maintenance pattern amid economic instability from the Iran war and growing concerns about worker replacement by AI.

“From a macro perspective, the labor market is just stagnant. Companies aren’t hiring a lot of people, but they’re also not choosing to lay off a lot of people,” Laura Ulrich, director of North American economic research at Indeed Hiring Lab, told USA TODAY.

Michael Feroli, JPMorgan’s chief U.S. economist, said in an April 21 report on AI and geopolitics that markets are showing “resilience in the face of headwinds,” but month-on-month fluctuations are more volatile than during the previous month’s expansion.

“The current labor market is neither overheating nor collapsing, but it is becoming increasingly sensitive to shocks,” Feroli said.

Because the layoffs announced today will not take effect until up to two months after they are announced, WARN notices serve as an indicator of job cuts by major companies and their pace months before actual departures.

These notices show the number of unemployed people, but do not provide information on the other side of the ledger: how many people have been hired. Net employment changes for April will be announced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its May 8 employment report.

The agency’s report through March shows month-to-month volatility, with 133,000 jobs lost in February between gains in January and March.

warning sign

Brian Creeley, founder of career coaching firm A Life After Layoff, says layoff cycles are much shorter now than they used to be. Mr Creeley previously said that while workers may have expected a once-in-a-decade move, it is now “actually going from once every 18 months to once every two years”.

Creeley said he currently actively mentors about 25 people and has about 200 clients in a typical year.

A third of his clients are seeking help after being made redundant, while another third are still employed but feel they are about to be made redundant.

“They’re starting to notice signs and red flags like, ‘All of a sudden, your boss’s tone changes in a meeting, or he’s saying strange things in town hall,'” Creeley said.

For many workers, making a fresh start was difficult. Those who recently lost their jobs have previously told USA TODAY how competitive the current job market is and expressed concerns about whether their roles will remain in the near future.

Nearly a quarter of U.S. households live paycheck to paycheck, according to a Bank of America report. For some families, layoffs can quickly turn into a financial crisis.

Creely’s best advice for today’s workers is to keep your resume current and prepared. “We need to be more proactive in this market rather than waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

Why are we collecting WARN notification data despite its limitations?

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, passed in 1988, requires employers with 100 or more full-time workers to provide at least 60 days’ written notice of any plant closure or mass layoff. Required advance notice supports career transitions so that workers can begin their job search while remaining in a technical position.

USA TODAY tracks warning notices from 43 state labor departments and the District of Columbia daily. The tracker reflects information provided in the filings themselves and shows the latest mass layoff notices reported to state governments by U.S. companies. The oldest were filed in the 1990s. Readers explore layoff notices by state, company, and notice year to find out where, when, and why layoffs took place. California has the highest number of WARN layoffs in the nation, followed by Washington and Texas, likely reflecting the large working population and the volatile nature of key industries.

State requirements vary and the law does not cover small businesses, but experts view WARN filings as a near-real-time economic indicator of the job market, whereas some other government statistics can be delayed by weeks or even months. Additionally, other federal employment-related data rarely provides the same level of granularity as WARN notifications, as filings include details such as employer name, number of affected workers, location, layoff announcement date, and layoff effective date.

However, there are caveats to this data. Monthly measurements can be skewed by seasonal patterns or a single large-scale layoff announcement. For example, the sharp rise in layoffs in January reflects concentrated layoffs at a small number of large companies.

“Layoffs are generally seasonal,” said Sarah Malik, an assistant professor at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. He added that some companies may push restructuring costs into the new financial year, which could result in a significant increase in WARN filings in January.

Cavaliers vs. Raptors, Pistons beat Magic: Today’s NBA winners and losers

0

play

There’s nothing quite like Game 7 in the NBA.

Fortunately for fans watching Sunday, May 3, two of those games will be between the No. 1 Detroit Pistons and the No. 8 Orlando Magic, and between the No. 4 Cleveland Cavaliers and the No. 5 Toronto Raptors.

In win-or-go-home scenarios, teams tend to elevate their play and compete with desperation. Perhaps no team feels that more than Orlando, which held a 3-1 series lead before allowing the Pistons to win their second straight game. The most recent came after a spectacular choke job in Game 6 when the Magic made just 4-of-37 from the floor in the second half.

The winners and losers of Sunday’s Game 7 are as follows:

Click here for continued updates on scores and stats as the Cavaliers host the Raptors in Game 7.

Toronto begins work in paint

Raptors point guard Jamal Shehed had a big first half with 14 points, and All-Star Scottie Barnes also scored 14 points. However, it was important for Toronto’s offense to attack inside the paint and get a higher chance of shooting.

The Raptors had a 20-8 first-half advantage in points in the paint, but it had two effects. It was a confidence booster to get points early on, and it created space for perimeter shooters to get open lines of sight after the driving player kicked the ball away.

Cade Cunningham

This is what a Most Valuable Player candidate should do. After dropping a team-high 32 points in Sunday’s Game 7, Detroit averaged 36.3 points per game in its final three first-round games (all elimination games).

Cunningham also had 12 assists and limited turnovers to just four assists.

Detroit finds second option in Tobias Harris

He exploded with 17 points in the second quarter, totaling 19 points in the first half alone. Harris was the player who sparked the massive scoring at the end of the first half, but he didn’t stop there.

Harris steadily knocked down shots and provided an outlet for Case Cunningham. When Magic tried to blitz him with extra body, Harris took advantage of that and knocked down the shot. Considering the magnitude of Game 7, it may have been the best game of his career.

Harris finished with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

jaylen duren

It was a good sign for Detroit that Duren, an All-Star for the first time this season, had a productive first half. Duren has struggled to make an impact this series, with his average performance well below his regular season total.

He was active on the glass and capitalized on second chances, scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He added 15 rebounds, but could be more aggressive in finding his mid-range stroke going into the second round.

Paolo Banchero

He set the tone for Orlando, scoring 11 points and making his first three 3-point attempts. Banchero aggressively targeted shots, and as Detroit turned its defensive attention to Banchero, he tried to find his teammates.

He finished the game with 38 points on 14-of-25 shooting, nine rebounds, and six assists. His biggest problem was that his teammates simply couldn’t make shots.

Cavaliers come back (again)

Cleveland was a top-10 team in protecting the ball during the regular season, averaging 14 turnovers per game. By the end of the first half against the Raptors, they had 13 giveaways, almost hitting that average.

Toronto scored 14 points off those turnovers, so having better possession in the second half is paramount for Cleveland. Another problem that makes this even worse is that both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, Cleveland’s two top scorers, are playing a little passive offensively and are missing shooting opportunities.

Turnovers have been a problem for Cleveland throughout the series. That could be the biggest problem sending the Cavaliers home.

jamal mosley

The Magic’s head coach will face considerable criticism this offseason for squandering Orlando’s 3-1 series lead and Game 6 collapse. Mosley didn’t do enough to stop Detroit’s runs and momentum during key games in the series.

To be clear, the Pistons, the No. 1 seed in the conference, are a very talented team, so they were expected to improve their play after the stakes were the highest.

Franz Wagner’s right calf strain severely hampered Orlando’s offensive portfolio, but its execution still lacked creativity and flow. Throughout the second half of the series, Paolo Banchero’s teammates didn’t do enough to generate any offense.

Magic role player in the first half

Orlando’s other starters combined to miss the first six shots of Game 7, and Magic players other than Banchero made just 8 of 27 (29.6%) in the first half.

Banchero made nine field goals in the first half, but no other Orlando player made more than two field goals.

jalen suggs

Suggs, the starting point guard, was the obvious choice as Orlando needed someone to shore up their offense. Still, Suggs struggled again on Sunday, completing what was a very tough series for him.

In Orlando’s final four games of the first round, Suggs shot just 8-of-41 (19.5%). Deep down it got even worse. From Games 4 to 7 of the series, Suggs shot just 4-of-26 (15.4%) from 3-point range.

Magic turnover in the first half

Orlando couldn’t afford any careless possessions in the first half, and a turnover battle before intermission that put them down 9-3 was the main reason Detroit ended the second quarter on a 20-6 run. Not surprisingly, the Pistons led 12-3 in points off turnovers at halftime.

That helped set the tone for the rest of the game.

Buckle up! The Devil Wears Prada 2 kicks off the summer movie season in style.

The long-awaited sequel starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep grossed a whopping $77 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, according to ComScore estimates released on May 3. This was an impressive start considering the original film opened in 2006 for just $27 million (not adjusted for inflation) and finished with $124.7 million.

This makes “The Devil Wears Prada 2” the fourth highest-grossing opening weekend of 2026, behind “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Michael,” and “Project Hail Mary.” The film was released on a weekend traditionally considered the start of the summer blockbuster season. In 2025, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” opened there and had a similar size, grossing $74 million.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 grossed $233.6 million worldwide.

Twenty years after the original film, Hathaway reprises her role as journalist Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2. After losing his newspaper job, Sacks returns to work for demanding fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep). Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci also reprise their roles in the sequel, which features new cast members such as Justin Theroux and BJ Novak, and cameos from stars such as Lady Gaga. Gaga also sings in the movie as herself.

After years of skepticism as to whether The Devil Wears Prada 2 could live up to the original film, the film not only did so in the eyes of critics, but became the rare sequel that actually received better reviews than the original. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a critical approval rating of 77%, up slightly from 75% for its predecessor, The Devil Wears Prada. CinemaScore’s survey of moviegoers also gave the sequel an average rating of A-, an improvement from the previous film’s B rating.

The strong audience response likely means The Devil Wears Prada 2 will continue to do well in the coming weeks, especially considering there isn’t much competition in theaters over Mother’s Day weekend. The next big release that could make a dent in audiences is the new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released on Memorial Day.

The movie “Michael” ranks second in the history of music biopics.

Meanwhile, despite being widely panned by critics, Michael continues to do well in theaters.

The controversial Michael Jackson biopic grossed an additional $54 million at the domestic box office in its second weekend of release, which was a surprisingly small 44% drop from its opening weekend. The film has already set the record for the highest-grossing debut ever for a music biopic, and is now the second-highest grossing music biopic of all time, surpassing “Elvis” and behind “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The 2018 Freddie Mercury movie remains the highest-grossing music biopic with $911 million worldwide. As of this weekend, “Michael” has grossed $423.9 million worldwide.

This performance all but guarantees that the sequel teased at the end of “Michael” will materialize, but the studio has yet to make an official announcement.

After a strong start this weekend, movie theaters are poised to be in high gear heading into the summer, which will be packed with franchises such as “Toy Story,” “Minions,” “Moana,” and “Spider-Man.”

Rudy Giuliani hospitalized in ‘serious but stable condition’

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is hospitalized and in “serious but stable condition,” his spokesperson announced on Sunday, May 3.

“Mayor Giuliani is a warrior who faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and continues to fight with that same strength,” Ted Goodman, a spokesman for Mayor Giuliani, told USA TODAY in a statement.

USA TODAY followed up with Goodman about his hospitalization, but it was unclear which hospital Giuliani was taken to.

Giuliani was one of the lawyers involved in President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. Those efforts led to criminal charges against Mr. Giuliani in two states and a defamation lawsuit from election officials in Georgia.

Mr. Giuliani has denied any wrongdoing in the criminal case.

Election officials Ruby Freeman and Shay Moss sued Giuliani for falsely claiming the two had stuffed ballot boxes during the 2020 election and won a $148 million judgment in 2023. The women settled with Giuliani in 2025.

In a social media post, President Trump said of his former personal lawyer, “He was treated badly by the radical left lunatics and Democrats, but he was right about everything!” The president pardoned Giuliani in November for trying to overturn the 2020 election.

Before joining Trump in the White House, Giuliani won praise for his response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, earning him the nickname “America’s Mayor.”

Director Spike Lee, who has worked with Michael Jackson, has his own verdict on the new biopic.

Spike Lee knows Michael Jackson and thinks the critics of his new biopic are getting it all wrong.

In an interview with CNN, the 69-year-old director of the Oscar-winning “Do the Right Thing” praised the movie “Michael” and pushed back against criticism that the film ignored child sexual abuse allegations against the “Bad” singer.

“I saw (‘Michael’) twice,” Lee told CNN. “I love it.”

He added, “If you’re a critic and you’re complaining about other things[that aren’t in the movie]but the movie ends in ’88! And what you’re talking about, the accusations, happened[later]. So you’re criticizing the movie for what you want to put in the movie, and that doesn’t work in the timeline of the movie!”

The film stars Jaafar Jackson, the pop icon’s nephew, and is directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Lee directed the music video for Jackson’s 1996 song “They Don’t Care About Us,” as well as two documentaries about him, “Bad 25” and “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall.”

Mr. Lee pointed to the box office success of “Michael,” suggesting that the large audiences proved the critics wrong. “People showed up,” he said. “People all over the world showed their love for Michael.”

Lee added, “I miss Mike. I miss Prince. I mean, they’re my brothers. I worked with both of them. They’re both beautiful, beautiful people.”

“Michael” is the story of the singer’s life from 1966 to 1988 and depicts his rise to solo stardom leading up to the “Bad” tour. The film ends five years before Jackson first faced sexual abuse allegations in 1993, which he denies.

According to reports from Puck and Variety, “Michael” was originally intended to depict Jackson being accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler in 1993, but the plot had to be dropped after a legal settlement prohibited Chandler’s accusations from being made into a film. The final version of the film focuses on Jackson’s music and his struggle to assert himself against his abusive father.

Michael was largely panned by critics, many of whom accused the film of whitewashing sexual abuse allegations and overly sanitizing Jackson’s life. However, the film was a huge hit at the box office, setting a record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a music biopic. It has grossed over $400 million worldwide to date.

The ending of “Michael” hints at the production of a sequel that will further explore the singer’s story, but it remains unclear whether this potential second film will address any of the allegations. Jackson was also charged in 2003 with sexually abusing 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo. He was acquitted of all charges in 2005.

Colman Domingo, who played Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson in “Michael,” dismissed the allegations against Jackson and defended the film during an April appearance on “Today.”

“We’re focusing on the making of Michael, so it’s an intimate portrayal of who Michael is,” the actor said, adding, “There could be a part two that might deal with some other things that happen after that.”

Jodie Sweetin reveals her check balance for ‘Full House’ was just 1 cent

Despite being a child actress, Full House alum Jodie Sweetin is straight-up documenting the “normal” life she leads.

The 44-year-old actress revealed on the April 21 episode of the McBride Rewind podcast that she received “a 1-cent check the other day” for royalties from her role as middle child Stephanie Tanner during the show’s eight-year run. Sweetin also reprized her role in the Netflix reboot of Fuller House from 2016 to 2020.

“There’s no syndication anymore because it’s all streaming,” she pointed out. “Who’s going to get paid for it? Nobody’s going to get paid for it.”

According to SAG-AFTRA, the union that covers screen and radio performers, TV performers receive residual payments if their shows are used beyond what is “covered by initial compensation,” meaning reruns, video/DVD releases, or syndication.

Many actors rely on residual pay to supplement their income until their next job comes along, but in the streaming era, those payments have plummeted, SAG-AFTRA said.

“Sure, in my 20s, I would have the money, but I wouldn’t trust it,” Sweetin said. “I don’t know how much it’s going to cost or how often the shows are going to be done. So sometimes I’m like, ‘Oh, great. That was great.'” And sometimes I’m like, “Okay, let’s go out and have a nice dinner.” ”

Outside of the world of Full House, Sweetin also appeared in the 2015 film The Walt Before Mickey, numerous TV movies, and the iconic film Jane Mystery. The mother-of-two pushed back against the idea that she might live a “luxurious life,” saying she drives a used 2023 Hyundai sedan, rents a home and “maxes out” some of her credit cards.

As for a third installment of “Full House,” Sweetin left the door open.

“I never say never to anything. If I could come back in another 20 years and work again with these people I’ve known my whole life, certainly, I would absolutely do it,” she said.

Sweetin added, “We always joke that we’re going to be ‘Frest House,’ but we’re just going to be the old guys.”
