It comes just six weeks after President Donald Trump’s preferred choice won Louisiana’s Senate runoff elections on June 27, ending the career of Sen. Bill Cassidy, who further bent the Republican Party to the administration’s wishes.

Rep. Julia Letlow was expected to defeat state Treasurer John Fleming in a tight primary race within 40 minutes of polls closing, according to NBC News Decision Desk headquarters.

The victory marks the next chapter in the 45-year-old congressman’s meteoric rise, fueled largely by President Trump’s strong support. She replaced her husband, Luke, in Congress in 2021, a year after he died of complications from COVID-19 before taking office.

Mr. Letlow previously worked in higher education as a university administrator and was a finalist for president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Earlier this year, President Trump encouraged Letlow to run against Cassidy, who was the primary culprit in voting to convict the president in his second impeachment trial after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In a Jan. 17 social media post, President Trump said he would “fully and fully support Julia Letlow should she decide to enter this race.”

In addition to the president, Leslow had received support from other Republican leaders in Washington, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, Sens. Rick Scott of Florida and Katie Britt of Alabama.

The Louisiana Democratic Party also finalized its nomination by selecting farmer Jamie Davis, according to NBC News and DDHQ. However, the Pelican State is rated by most political forecasters as a solid Republican seat in the fall.
