WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s Agenda on Border Patrol and Foreign Imports will be scrutinized at a May 6th Congressional hearing just before a White House meeting with Canadian newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The blueprint for Trump’s abbreviation spending for the year starting October 1st aims to cut $163 billion from non-military programs. But the Department of Homeland Security is one of the places Trump will step up spending if Congress agrees.
At separate hearings, members of the House Budget Committee will question Trump’s Cabinet Secretary about the DHS and the Treasury’s proposal to spend.
After the legislative hearing begins, Trump will host Carney in the White House. The victory of the Canadian leader, Liberals, April 28, was praised for opposing Trump’s tariffs and the US president’s call.st state.
Here’s what you need to know about Trump’s priorities meetings:
“Socialist” skeptical of trade contracts with Canada
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutonic expressed skeptical debate about President Donald Trump reaching a trade deal with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “socialist regime” on the eve of his first meeting.
“I think that’s really complicated,” Lutnick told Fox business host Larry Kudrow on May 5th.
Canada sold approximately $63 billion in goods and services to the United States in 2024 rather than 2024, according to the Census Bureau. Trump imposed a 25% tariff on import values from Canada, but exempt items negotiated under a US-Canada trade agreement that expires in 2026.
“It’s going to be a fascinating meeting,” Rutnick said. “I don’t know how it works perfectly.” – Defeat Janssen
Despite sharp cuts in other domestic programs, Trump has proposed spending another $43.8 billion on DHS next year as part of a $175 billion increase over four years.
Trump told reporters that his administration has deported undocumented immigrants by thousands, but “it’s very difficult for the courts.” The judges temporarily blocked the removal under the alien enemy laws and ordered him to “promote” the return of Salvadra migrants who had been deported by administrative errors.
Kristi Noem, the DHS secretary who implements immigration policy, will testify to the 10am EDT before the home’s appropriation committee. On May 5th, NOEM began offering immigrants a $1,000 scholarship and free plane tickets to deport themselves.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent was a prominent advocate for Trump’s tariffs. But Bescent personally said in April that Trump’s 145% tariffs on China were not sustainable, and that the president hopes he will negotiate a lower number.
For another vein, Trump’s budget aims to cut the department’s budget by 19%, primarily from a cut of around $2.5 billion to the Internal Revenue Service. After Trump passed a handful of IRS directors, the budget said it would cut weaponization of institutions that allegedly targeted conservative groups and small businesses while protecting taxpayer services.
Bessent is scheduled to testify at 10am before another House Budget Subcommittee.
Carney’s first visit to the White House comes at a time when Trump threatened the country’s longtime alliance with an import war.
But after repeatedly proposing to annex Canada as a new province, Trump softened his stance. He told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on May 4th that he didn’t imagine using military force.
“I can’t see it as Canada,” Trump said with a laugh. “I haven’t seen it, I have to be honest with you.”
Carney says that decades of stable integration with the US have been integrated for decades since World War II ended. The Liberal Party, which had been in power for more than nine years, fell behind the polls in January before former prime minister Justin Trudeau resigned and Trump proposed tariffs and annexation.
