Justice Department officials announced Tuesday that they have indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center, a well-known civil rights organization, on charges related to “funding, not dismantling, extremism.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the law center for comment.

“There is no question that what we learned from our informants saved lives.”

The civil rights organization was founded in 1971 and became a notable opponent of the KKK.

The group has fallen out of favor under the Trump administration.

Mr Patel said the legal community was the first target, but other charges could be forthcoming.
