What makes money? Astronomers reveal new clues

CNN

Astronomers have been trying to determine the origins of the universe, such as gold, for decades. Now, new research based on signals revealed in archival space mission data may point to potential cues: magnets, or highly magnetized neutron stars.

Scientists believe that lighter elements like hydrogen and helium, as well as small amounts of lithium, are likely to exist early on after the Big Bang created the universe 13.8 billion years ago.

The exploding stars then released heavier elements like iron, which were incorporated into newborns and planets. However, the distribution of gold, heavier than iron, casts a mystery to astrophysicists throughout the universe.

“This is a rather basic question in terms of the origins of complex issues in the universe,” said Anildo Patel, the lead author of the study published Tuesday in Astrophysical Journal Letters and a doctoral student in physics at Columbia University in New York City. “It’s a fun puzzle that’s not really solved.”

Previously, gold space production was only linked to neutron star collisions.

Astronomers observed a collision between two neutron stars in 2017. The violent collision emitted ripples in space-time, known as gravitational waves, and emitted light from gamma-ray bursts. The collision event, known as Kironova, also created heavy elements such as gold, platinum and leads. Kironova is likened to a gold factory in space.

Co-authors of Eric Burns, an assistant professor and astrophysicist at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, co-authors of Eric Burns, believe that most neutron stars mergers only occurred in the past hundreds of millions of years.

But previously, 20 years ago data from NASA and the European Space Agency telescopes suggest that flares from magnetors, which were formed much earlier during the childhood of space, may have provided an alternative way to create gold, Burns said.

Neutron stars are core remnants from the exploded stars, and they are so dense that a teaspoon of stars weighs 1 billion tonnes on Earth. Magnetors are a very bright type of neutron star with an incredibly powerful magnetic field.

Astronomers are still trying to solve exactly how magnets form, but Burns said it is likely that the first star appeared just after the first star, or about 13.6 billion years ago, within about 200 million years of the universe’s beginning.

Occasionally, Magnetar unleashes a jackpot of radiation for “Starcast.”

On Earth, the Earth’s melting core causes the movement of the planet’s crust, causing earthquakes to occur and sufficient stress build up, causing volatile movements, or the ground to tremble under the feet. According to Burns, Starcooki is similar.

“Nutron stars have a crust and a superfluid core,” Burns said in an email. “Moving beneath the surface can stress the surface and ultimately cause star cakes. In magnetores, these stark cakes produce very short bursts of X-rays.

Researchers found evidence suggesting that magnetors release material during the giant flare, but they had no physical explanation for the exhaustion of star masses, Patel said.

A recent study found that it can burn and release skin heat at high speeds, according to a few new researchers, including Patel’s advisor Brian Metzger, a New York City physics professor, and Patel’s advisor Brian Metzger, a senior research scientist at the Flatiron Institute in New York City.

“They hypothesized that the physical conditions for this explosive mass emissions are promising for the production of heavy elements,” Patel said.

The artist's concept depicts the magnets that magnets emit into the universe. The magnetic field lines shown in green affect the movement of the charged material around the magnet.

The researchers wanted to know if there could be a link between radiation from magnetor flares and the formation of heavy elements. Scientists searched for evidence of visible and ultraviolet wavelengths. But Burns wondered whether the flare might produce traceable gamma rays.

He saw gamma ray data from the giant magnetar flares that appeared in December 2004 and was photographed by the now-retired integration or the international Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Institute Mission. Astronomers had found and characterized the signal, but at that point they had no idea how to interpret it, Burns said.

Predictions from the model proposed by Metzger’s previous work closely matched the signals from the 2004 data. The gamma rays are similar to what the team proposed how the creation and distribution of emphasis would look like in a massive magnetar flare.

Data from NASA’s retired Rhessi or the Reven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager also supported the team’s findings. Long-term funded research has made discoveries possible, Burns said.

“When we first built the model and made the forecast in December 2024, we didn’t know that the signal was already in the data. And we couldn’t imagine the theoretical model fitted very well with the data. It was a very exciting holiday season for all of us,” Patel said. “It’s very cool to think about how some of my phones and my laptops were forged in this extreme explosion over the course of the Galaxy history.”

Dr. Eleonoratroja, an associate professor at the University of Rome who led the discovery of the x-rays emitted by neutron star collisions in 2017, said the evidence of critical elements from the Magnetaral event “is not comparable to the evidence collected in 2017.” Toroja was not involved in the new research.

“The production of gold from this magnetaru is a possible explanation for its gamma ray glow, and it seems to be an honest discussion at the end of it, among many others,” Troja said.

Troja added that magnetors are “very messy objects.” Given that producing gold can be a tricky process that requires certain conditions, magnetors can add too many wrong components, such as excess electrons, to the mix, leading to photometals such as zirconium and silver, rather than gold or uranium.

“Therefore, I will not say that a new source of gold has been discovered,” Troja said. “In fact, what is proposed is an alternative pathway for its production.”

Researchers believe the magnetor’s giant flares are responsible for up to 10% of the heavier elements in the Milky Way galaxy, but future missions could provide a more accurate estimate, Patel said.

NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager Mission (COSI, scheduled to be released in 2027) may follow up on this finding. The wide field gamma ray telescope is designed to observe giant magnetoresistive flares and identify elements created within them. Telescopes could help astronomers search for sources of other potential heavy elements throughout the universe, Patel said.

Woman killed in Greece after a bomb exploded with his hand

0

CNN

A woman dies in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, after a bomb she was carrying in her hand.

The 38-year-old apparently tried to place his device outside the bank early on Saturday, police reported. The explosion damaged several storefronts and vehicles.

“It appears she was carrying an explosive device and was planning to plant it in the bank’s ATM,” a senior police official told Reuters.

“Something didn’t work and exploded in her hands,” the official added. A criminal investigation is underway.

According to the Associated Press, the woman was known to police for her involvement in a past robbery. Authorities are reportedly investigating links to the left group of extremists, the agency added.

The explosion occurs less than a month after the bomb exploded outside the Hellenic train office in Athens.

Police ousted the area after two Greek media organizations received warnings that the explosive device would disappear within 35 minutes, officers said at the time. A suspicious bag was found outside the evacuated building.

The coins are cash. Why do we treat them like garbage?

0

play

Learn to love your coins.

This is a message from Kevin McColly, CEO of Coinstar, the company behind the coin chushing machines found in supermarkets.

According to the Federal Reserve, American consumers were only able to make 16% of their payments in cash in 2023. A 2022 Pew survey found that two-fifths of consumers don’t use cash at all.

President Trump ordered the Treasury to stop building penny because production costs exceed its value. (Interestingly, the same applies to nickel.)

Many Americans view both nickel and penny as more annoying than currency. According to the Federal Reserve, typical households sit with $60 to $90 in neglected coins. Americans throw away millions of dollars of coins each year and treat them like garbage.

Coins are literally money. Why do we treat them like garbage?

McColey believes we should change our way of thinking about coins.

To state the obvious, the coin is worth the money. Coinstar converts $3 billion in coins into easy-to-use cash each year. One coin jar at a time. The average bottle gives you $58 in purchasing power.

Most of us don’t understand how much our coins are worth. So a trip to a coin exchange kiosk (or a bank, or a credit union) can bring a pleasant surprise.

“People underestimate the value of bottles about half,” McColley said. “It’s a wonderful and enjoyable experience. People have this sense of money they found.”

Certain groups of Americans (low-income households, and those over 55) still use a lot of cash, the Fed discovered, along with people who prefer to shop in person.

The coins are not messy. They are currency

For the rest of us, we think McCollie is a time for a paradigm shift. Don’t consider your coins messy. Think of them as recyclable.

“They’re metal,” he said. “And they have a long service life.”

The Treasury still covers more than 5 billion coins a year, but numbers are falling, according to Journal Coinnews.

“These are natural resources coming out of the planet,” McCollie said: copper zinc, nickel, dime, and a quarter copper nickel alloy for pennies.

His point: If Americans get serious about collecting idol coins and “recycled” them into the financial system, Mint doesn’t have to make so many new things.

Certainly, McColly has a vested interest. His company collects small cuts of coins that consumers deposit.

“You can go to your own bank or credit union and you can’t pay the fee,” said Kimberly Palmer, a personal finance expert at Nerdwallet. Both Nerdwallet and Bankrate offer tip sheets when exchanging coins for cash. Most banks are not everything, but not everything.

“A lot of people probably have hidden coins hidden around their homes, and they may have time to gather them together,” Palmer said.

McColly points out that if a depositor chooses to trade coins on retail gift cards rather than cash, Coinstar generally gives up the fee.

He is not alone in predicting the future of Penny, Nickel and their more profitable relatives.

“We were able to adopt mobile payments and contactless credit cards much slower than parts of Europe and Asia,” said Ted Rothman, senior industry analyst at Bankrates.

The pandemic has reminded us in a timely manner the amount we still rely on cash. Consumers and business owners sat on coins amid the global closure and seeded the actual coin shortage.

“We’ve frozen the entire system,” Rothman said.

Resignation Coin: Where will it end?

Trump only instructed Mint to stop making pennies, but some voices have urged America to stop using them.

The Common Cents Act, introduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers on April 30, will close the cash transaction at the nearest five cents.

“Penny is outdated and inefficient and no longer meets the needs of our economy,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a New York Democrat.

However, the bill was able to push the country down onto a slippery slope.

“So you want to get rid of the penny,” the New York Times meditated in a recent headline. “Do you have any plans for nickel?”

After all, removing the penny creates a new problem. As America removes the penny, the Times reported, the country will soon find its overflowing with nickel.

The government loses nearly three cents each time it is minted. In nickel, you lose almost nine cents. An increase in nickel means sudden losses.

America was able to kill both Penny and Nickel, two Money Roses on the Coin roster.

But without penny or nickel, how would consumers pay a 15-cent tab?

You can round any price to the nearest ten cents, taking your general cents a step further. But what happens to the quarter after that?

and so on.

Privacy advocates say the government may be watching

0

play

  • Privacy advocates have expressed concerns about potential data sharing and tracking across the state.
  • Opponents argue that actual IDs create de facto national identification systems, increasing vulnerability to data breaches and government surveillance.
  • The TSA claims that the actual ID sets minimum security standards rather than national IDs, and that the state manages individual databases.

Actual ID enforcement deadlines will take effect within a week following years of delays.

Adults will need a compliant driver’s license or ID to board a commercial domestic flight and enter certain other facilities on May 7th, but travelers will still be able to use accepted alternatives, such as passports.

The path to implementation in about 20 years due to the Real ID Act of 2005 is bumpy and is sometimes marked by resistance from the states tasked with issuing documents. Even after the law was passed, more than a dozen states opposed the actual ID, saying it comes with high administrative costs and poses a privacy threat. Advocacy groups raised similar concerns.

What should you know about this:

What are your actual privacy concerns about your ID?

Alexis Hancock, engineering director for the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the program “will drive a regime that strips everyone of privacy and further alienates undocumented people.”

“To enter a TSA checkpoint, you will soon need to identify your actual ID compliance, but there is no reason why it will not expand unless you can include additional “official purposes” in federal agencies in the future.”

As identification information is currently stored at the state level, Hancock added that the program’s unified standards can “redirect more easily” sensitive information on state lines, such as when state DMVs report that they have sold data to third parties.

The American Civil Liberties Union similarly states that when the law is fully implemented, it will facilitate personal data tracking. “By clearly changing driver licenses into the form of national identity documents, actual IDs will have a major destructive impact on privacy,” the organization’s website reads.

Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, told USA Today that “privacy concerns have been a long time about having a standardized identity system.”

“Because it’s not fully enabled yet, and because it’s been enacted so slowly, some of the things we were worried about have yet to happen,” he said in an interview. He also said that today’s “real battle” is about digital IDs and associated risks.

A Transportation Security Administration spokesman told USA Today that Real IDs are a “national set of minimum standards” rather than a national ID card, and that they have not created a federal driver’s license information database.

“The jurisdiction of each state continues to issue its own unique licenses, maintaining its own records and control that allow access to those records, and under any circumstances,” the spokesperson said in an email. “The purpose of an actual ID is to make state-issued identity documents accepted by federal agencies for official purposes more consistent and secure.”

It’s time for a CICADAS bug

CICADAS is here. Tennessee and North Carolina reported the first sightings of what quickly became a 13-state flock of loud (but harmless) insects, according to Cicada Safari, the chase site. They are known as Brood XIVs, and appear every 17 years, making them impossible to notice in most of the eastern US. They are sometimes known as pilgrim broods – sightings were first recorded in 1634 in the Plymouth Colony, what is now Massachusetts. Jean Kritzky, a Chicada expert at St. Joseph’s University in Ohio, said settlers “didn’t know about the regular cicada.” “They are endemic to the eastern part of the United States. The pilgrims didn’t realize they would return in 17 years.”

Trump calls Amazon’s complaint director

The report that Amazon lit a fire under the White House fired the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariffs next to its product price, declaring it “hostile and political act.” Citing an unidentified source, Punchbowl News’ report sent Trump to the phone, celebrating the 100th day, dialing up Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. An Amazon spokesperson later denied the report, telling USA Today, “This will never be approved and will never happen.” Regarding the phone call, Trump told reporters:

No, Martha Stewart doesn’t take out

Leave it to Martha Stewart and let anyone do anything, she can do it herself, and perhaps better. Appearing on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” discussing a new cooking competition show, “Yes, Chef!” with celebrity chef José Andrés, Stewart, 83, revealed that she has never ordered take-out dishes. “You’ve never had anything like ‘It’s Taco Bell’s Night,'” asked an incredible Clarkson. Andre could only shook his head, but later he demanded “prove it.”

The heat got colder and it was a hot mess

The Cleveland Cavaliers not only delivered bangs to the Miami Heat in their first round NBA Playoff Series, but have been strong for many years. Cavs’ 138-83 won to wipe out the series and close out the extraordinary figures. In more than four games, Cleveland outperformed Miami by 122 points. Heat lost games 3 and 4 with a total of 92 points. And then, in the second half of Game 4, my fever turned 60. “This is the best resignation here,” declared Charles Barkley “inside the NBA.” “When we go to their house, everything their stuff is already packed.”

Sprinter Curly misses Grand Slam Truck after battery arrest

0

Reuters

Two-time Olympic 100 metreist Fred Carly has been arrested for punching Hurdler and ex-girlfriend Aleisha Johnson in the face, police said Friday.

The alleged incident occurred Thursday at a hotel where Johnson, listed as a competitor at a Miami event, was appointed as her conditioning coach when police told police he had met Kelly.

According to the arrest report, Johnson told officers he became aggressive and continued to approach her, then was hit once in the face by Carly with his closed fist and then he exclaimed his nose.

The report also said Johnson’s injuries were “consistent with her statement,” and that 29-year-old Carly was charged with one count of “battery touch or strike.”

Reuters contacted Carly’s representative for comment.

Fred Carly booked photos from his arrest on Thursday, May 1st.

According to arrest reports, Carly and Johnson dated for about six months, but they broke up in October last year.

Carly, who won a bronze medal in the 100m final at the 2024 Parisio Games and a silver medal in the same distance at the 2020 Tokyo Games, was scheduled to compete in Miami on Saturday and in Miami on Sunday.

“Fred Carly was arrested last night. The matter is under active investigation and all inquiries should be sent to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office,” Grand Slam Truck said in a statement. “Fred will not compete this weekend. There are no further comments at this time.”

Carly competed in his first Grand Slam Track competition last month in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Grand Slam Track, which will host four competitions in 2025, was created by four times the Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson.

This circuit is a direct challenge to the Diamond League and is a standard representative for Worldwide, which holds 15 meetings each year in cities from Xiamen to Zurich.

Three moves guarantee that social security checks will be reduced

0

If you need to make sure your Social Security checks are as large as possible, you should avoid taking these incorrect actions.

play

Social Security benefits are an important source of income for many seniors. If these benefits are expected to play a major role in funding retirements, you should understand that certain actions can reduce monthly payments.

Specifically, making these three moves means that less money will flow into your bank account as a retiree each month.

1. Claims of profit before age 70

The first move guaranteed to reduce monthly social security checks claim profits before the age of 70. can We will begin checking benefits for young 62 years old. This will result in much smaller payments.

See, you have a full retirement age, or FRA (someone born in 1959 is 66 and 10 months, and those born after 1960 are 67 months). If you claim benefits at full retirement age, you can earn standard benefits based on your working life revenue. However, if you request benefits before your FRA each month, you will receive an early application penalty. The penalty is pretty small each month, 5/9, 1% in the first 36 months and 5/12, 1% in the past few months, but it will increase quickly. For example, those who claim at age 62 instead of 67 will reduce monthly payments that claim to be profitable even a year earlier, resulting in a 6.7% reduction.

Delaying benefits claims has the opposite effect. Delaying the start of benefits each month will earn you a late retirement credit that increases your monthly payment to 2/3 of 1%. However, you cannot earn credits after the age of 70, so up until then you wait for the maximum monthly payment, which is 24% more than the standard benefit.

If you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to maximize your monthly check, avoid billing 70 years ago. Of course, this doesn’t always mean you get the most lifetime To do that, you have to live long enough to make up for the missed checks of many years. Still, most retirees will ultimately get better by waiting, and if you are a higher income and you are behind, you can earn a higher survivor’s benefit for your spouse.

2. Retirement after work history of less than 35 years

Remember the standard benefits above – what you get at your full retirement age? You can also reduce that profit with certain decisions you make. Specifically, if you quit your job before you have 35 years of work history, your profits will be reduced.

There’s a simple reason for that. Your profit is based on the average wage you earn over your 35-year earning years. Wages are adjusted to inflation and get monthly payments equal to the percentage of average monthly revenues in the meantime. If you’ve been working for less than 35 years, this remains the same. Therefore, if you decide to quit your job after 20 years at work, your average monthly income includes 15 years of wages.

Some retirees benefit greatly from working for more than 35 years if their income increases over time. For each year of working in a higher wage job, the lower year is removed from the average wage calculation. However, at least if you want to get the largest checks possible, I recommend avoiding these $0 wage years.

3. You’ll earn too much before you reach FRA

Finally, if you request Social Security before your full retirement age and work while receiving benefits, your check can also be reduced or potentially completely wiped out. Earn $23,400 a year in profits, and every $2 more than that limit, your benefits will be reduced by $1. This limit applies if you do not reach FRA at all in the year you work. In the year you reach the FRA, the $62,160 cap is high, and you lose only one dollar benefit for every $3 more than that amount.

As you are earning a salary, watching your checks shrink or disappear can be upset if you are expecting to earn income from both Social Security and work. The good news is that your profits will be recalculated in the FRA and take into account the months when you miss or decrease benefits, which will result in an increase in future payments. And after the FRA, you can work as much as you want without losing your benefits, so this is something you should just look if you wanted a double dip after retirement at a young age.

Finally, if you do one of these three moves, teeth Low monthly payments. This does not necessarily mean that there are no circumstances where these things need to be done, but you need to be aware of the consequences before you act.

Trend Line: Gambling in the Kentucky Derby is rising considerably

0

CNN

Welcome to Trend Line, weekly installments on sports trends and what’s trending.

This week we’re talking about the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby, the world’s most famous horse racing.

Journalism – Yes, it’s actually the name of a horse – a favorite to win, but the truth is that you don’t know which horse will end first.

we do Knowing which people will win on Saturday, it starts with our trends.

Bookmakers have a field day for Churchill Downs. Over $200 million was gambled in last year’s main event. Adding all the other races, over $300 million bets.

Less than $100 million were gambled in the main event in 2004.

Of course, it’s easier to gamble than ever before. It only takes a few clicks on your phone.

Still, just over $50 million were gambled in the next race in the horse racing Triple Crown (Preakness).

Derby is unique among horse racing as it is the top 10 gambling event in the US.

The fact that Derby is so popular is surprising given the general state of horse racing. When polls ask about people’s favorite sports, most don’t even include horse racing.

In a 2017 poll from the Washington Post, under 1% offered horse racing as their favorites. He came in 14th place in horse racing. In 1937, horse racing ranked fourth in the nation.

The Derby is that it’s more than just horse racing. I can’t imagine another sporting event with its own unique fashion that has nothing to do with what the athlete is wearing.

Yes, you can wear a seersucker suit or a crazy hat too.

Baeza will train the train on the truck during morning training before the 151st Kentucky Derby in Churchill Downs on Friday.

Speaking of specific Derby, can you think of another sporting event where alcoholic beverages are not beer?

Mint jelep has a long history in horse racing. Some winners received the Sterling Julep Trophy for certain horse racing.

One of the main ingredients in mint jelep is bourbon. Kentucky is the country’s most producer of bourbon (probably 95%).

Therefore, Mint Juleps is a marketing goldmine for people related to the Derby.

My only fear is that if I drink too early on the Derby day, I won’t be able to keep myself awake due to the race.

It’s powerful, sweet, and you can choose the horse you actually won, like Saturday’s race.

Singapore votes in the test of ruling party monopoly

0

Sinagpore
Reuters

Singapore is holding elections on Saturday to perpetuate the unbroken rules of the People’s Action Party, in the test of public recognition of the new Prime Minister, as a writing for the city-state of economic upheaval from the World Trade War.

The election is a positive positive for the popularity of the PAP, which has been ruled before Singapore’s 1965 independence, paying attention to whether the opposition parties can challenge the ruling party’s tough grip on power and make further intrusions after small but unprecedented interests in the final contest.

PAP has consistently won on landslides with around 90% of its seats, but its popularity vote share is closely monitored as a measure of the strength of its mission, with Prime Minister Lawrence Won eager to improve its 60.1% in the 2020 election.

Last year, Wong, 52, became the fourth prime minister of Asia’s financial hub, pledged to lead continuity, new blood and Singapore in his own way.

He took over at the end of the two-year prime minister, Lee Hucien Long, son of former leader Lee Quang Yu, the founder of Modern Singapore.

Voting will open at 8am and close at 8pm (8am Eastern US), resulting in an expected early Sunday.

The cost of living and housing availability in one of the world’s most expensive cities is a key issue for 2.76 million voters and a continuing challenge for Wong, whose government warns of a recession if a trade-dependent economy is a collateral loss in a war over sudden US tariffs.

PAPs have long been dominant in politics, each influences state institutions from membership that is much larger than their untested enemy, each operating in only a few constituencies.

Elections are biased events, with 46% of all candidates representing PAP. This challenges all 97 seats compared to 26 in its biggest rival, the Workers’ Party.

But while the PAP defeat is very unlikely, some analysts say that if opposition can make more progress, the election could change the dynamics of Singapore’s politics in the last year.

“We should expect (that) overall election support to gradually immerse ourselves in general elections and general elections,” said Ram Penn, a political scientist at the National University of Singapore.

“Would Singaporeans be surprised if PAP’s election support was supposed to be immersed in 57% or 58%? No one would be surprised. I don’t think it would surprise Pap at all.”

The PAP in that part warned voters about the outcome of seat losses for key cabinet members, which they said were important to balance US-China relations and navigate Singapore’s highly exposed economy.

“There’s certainly a backup, but everyone knows that the team can’t function at the same level,” Wong told a powerful union of 1.4 million people on Thursday.

McDonald’s US sales fall in the struggle economy

0

McDonald’s Chairman and CEO Chris Kempchinski said the decline in low- and middle-income customers is one of the main reasons for the decline in sales.

play

McDonald’s is the latest fast food chain to report declining sales amid a turbulent, volatile US economy affected by tariffs and inflation.

The Chicago, Illinois-based chain announced a decline on May 1 in its revenue report, which shared its results for the first quarter, which ended March 31st. According to the report, McDonald’s had a 3% decline in revenue, while sales of the same US store in the United States fell 3.6% from the previous year, marking the most significant decline since the 2020 COVID-9 pandamic.

“McDonald’s has a 70-year legacy of innovation, leadership and proven agility. All of these give us confidence in our ability to navigate the toughest market conditions and capture market share.” “Consumers today are tackling uncertainty, but we can always count on McDonald’s for both exciting new menu items and favourite favorites of extraordinary value from the brands they love.”

Like McDonald’s, other fast food chains have experienced similar economic issues, with some considering closures or locations like Jack in the Box, Wendy’s and Burger King. The number of struggling chains could grow as they begin to feel the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Why is McDonald’s experiencing a decline in sales?

In its revenue call, Kempczinski attributed it to a decline in fast food industry volatility and sales to declines in low-middle-income customers compared to a year ago.

Meanwhile, high-income traffic remains stable, with McDonald’s CEO saying “it shows a split US economy, particularly middle-income consumers, being squeezed by the cumulative impact of inflation and growing anxiety about the economic outlook.”

What is McDonald’s doing to increase sales?

According to Kempczinski, McDonald’s is “expanding and improving” its value items to meet the needs of its low- and middle-income clients. He added that McDonald’s now has a “daily affordable menu” and a “entrance-level meal bundle” in each of the five Big Five internationally operated markets.

The fast food chain includes items such as McDouble, McChicken and 4-piece Chicken McNuggets at discounted prices. Additionally, McDonald’s $5 meal agreement offers a variety of classic meals.

“These are components of the meaning of good value for us,” Kempczynski said.

Kempczinski also said that McDonald’s will continue to introduce “innovative new products” like the McCripsy strip and run “world-class promotion and marketing campaigns” to bring back customers. He also referred to the McDonald’s partnership with “Minecraft Movie.” This includes “Young and Old” store collectibles.

Are all fast food chains experiencing a decline in sales?

McDonald’s and others feel the weight of a struggling US economy, but there are no other fast food chains, such as Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). The chain has reported an increase in guest traffic due to the recent promotional deals they are pushing.

Yam! Brands, Inc. owns KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Habit Burger Grill. reported that the first quarter (March 31) ended, up 13% overall. Taco Bell US same store saw sales growth of 9%, while KFC International’s same store saw sales growth of 7%.

Trump is considering an executive order regarding payments to university athletes

0

The review on Trump’s issue comes from a conversation with former Alabama football coach Nick Saban earlier this week.

play

  • In talks with Bill’s Senator Ted Cruz, Sen. Richard Blumental said Trump “has no power to control the decree, particularly to give handouts to the NCAA.”

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is giving “serious consideration” to sign an executive order addressing payments to university athletes who are familiar with issues identified in USA Today on May 2.

The person requested anonymity as he was not permitted to speak publicly about the matter.

The review on Trump’s issue is set to be spoken at the university’s opening ceremony, in a conversation with former University of Alabama football coach, Nick Saban, when Trump was in Tuscaloosa on May 1.

This order could add surveillance to names, images, similarities, or nils that exploded across university athletics, with few arbitrary regulations, but how the order dealt with nil was not immediately clear.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report considerations regarding Trump’s lawsuit. This was added to more than 140 executive orders, with Trump signing the first 102 days, reaching a range of issues.

Saban was critical of the current state of university sports as part of Cruz’s ongoing efforts to create a college sports law that could pass Congress, including a roundtable event in Washington hosted by R-Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in March 2024.

Saban said at the time, the “personal development” of athletes was hampered by a combination of virtually unlimited opportunities for athletes to make money from the NIL and the ability to move multiple times in their college careers. He also said, “It brings rules that create a kind of competitive balance. This is not college athletics now. Paying most money, making the most money, buying the most players, will have the best chance to win. I don’t think that’s the spirit of college athletics.”

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, said he had a “great conversation” with Air Force Trump about the “importantness of establishing NIL national standards” during his presidential trip to the state.

“College football is the heart and soul of America, but it’s dangerous if you don’t level the arena,” said Tuberville, a former soccer coach at Auburn University and other schools.

Trump’s potential entry into the area comes as plaintiffs’ lawyers, NCAA and lawyers for the Power Five Conference are about to revise one aspect of the proposed settlement in the three athlete compensation antitrust cases where US district judge Claudia Wilken said he was otherwise ready to get final approval.

Under the arrangement, current and former athletes and their attorneys will receive $2.8 billion in damages over a decade, and Division I schools can pay directly for Athlete’s use, subject to a per-school cap based on a percentage of specific athlete income, increasing over time. Athletes will continue to be allowed to trade with non-school entities, but transactions over $600 will be subject to more scrutiny than they are now.

The proposed settlement would resolve some issues with the NCAA and its conference and schools, but they continue to lobby Congress for legislation enshrine the rights of athletes in federal law, preempting dozens of state laws passed in relation to athletes’ NIL rights and gave the NCAA a measure of the Anthrat suit. This is where Trump can intervene.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump has instructed White House aides to begin studying what the order looks like.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said in a statement to USA Today on the night of May 2nd about Trump’s potential involvement.

Steve Berman, one of the lead lawyers for plaintiffs in an ongoing antitrust case, condemned Trump’s prospects of involvement in any way restricting athletes, in a statement to USA Today.

“The president says he is the greatest business person ever,” Berman writes. “Why would he do anything to limit the business transactions students were negotiating for his Nir? He was a free market profit.

“What a hypocrite about Saban. He’s been nil’s opponent from the start, while he’s chasing tens of millions off the backs of these athletes.

“Trump should talk to coach (Jim) Harbaugh, a fan of the fast-growing Nil market, not of the coaches’ exploitation system that Saban benefits.”

Berman was referring to Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s opinion of consent to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Alston v. NCAA antitrust. The High Court has concluded the association’s limitations on education-related benefits athletes receive to play college sports. Kavanaugh strongly criticized the NCAA’s restrictions on athlete compensation.

Harbaugh has repeatedly defended greater compensation for college athletes over nine seasons as a University of Michigan football coach, along with the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.

This story has been updated to add new information.

Less than a year after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Big Lots announced plans to secure yet another partner in its comeback campaign and close hundreds of stores.

In the September 2024 bankruptcy filing, several companies have bought closed locations, with one of the latest buyers being tractor supply for rural lifestyle retailers.

The discount retailer sold the lease to Boston-based asset liquidation company Gordon Brothers Retail Partners in late 2024 to more than 460 stores, at which point the building was on sale. More than 200 locations have been acquired by variety wholesalers as part of a deal that began reopening in April.

The company resumed its first wave of nine locations on April 10, with plans to announce a second wave of 55 stores on May 1, and announcing a further 70 stores on May 15. Another round will follow in June.

Tractor Supply confirmed with USA Today that it purchased 18 big lot leases in 15 states, as Penn Live first reported.

“These locations are strategically located in existing and adjacent commercial areas to provide an ideal footprint, favourable lease terms for functionality, and to meet the essential needs of farmers, livestock and pet owners, ranchers, part-time and hobby farmers, gardeners, homeowners, merchants and more.

Apart from the supply of tractors, other retailers have announced the purchase of large lot locations. The variety wholesaler has acquired 219 big lot stores and two distribution centers, but Rhode Island-based Ocean Statelot announced in March that it will purchase 15 big lots in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.

Earlier in February, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet said it would buy 40 previous big lot stores. Burlington Stores, Inc. has also acquired 12 big lot locations in eight states.

Grayscale and Prune Algorithm: “Digital Nutritionist” offers advice on screen reduction | Smartphone

0

According to a professor who has become a “digital nutritionist,” turning off the color of his phone and pruning 30 minutes a week could help consumers control and improve their online media diet.

These two measures, also known as grayscale and algorithmic tolerance, are one of many recommendations from Dr. Kaitlyn Regehr, an associate professor at the University of London and a leading expert in digital literacy.

While recent discussions focus on the harm caused by social media on children, Regehr wants to deal with digital illiteracy among parents, it gives them a better understanding of their children’s devices and how to use them safely and effectively.

With her new book, Smartphone Nation, Regehr recommends facing your own use first with a digital “walkthrough” of your favorite app with friends and partners.

“Turning your phone to GreyScale is one of the quickest and easiest ways to understand the impact of colors and images on your user experience,” she writes. “This allows you to feel how colors and images play through the addictive nature of these devices.”

Instructions for this can be found either in Google Help on Android phones or Apple Support on iPhones.

On the other hand, algorithm resistance is about controlling the algorithm rather than letting it control it. Therefore, Regehr recommends making clear choices about what you want to see in your feed, and can’t find trash for 30 minutes a week, not due to trash.

“When I was worried about my family’s digital diet… I had a hard time knowing what guidance to use,” explains Regehr in the book. “I created something to help myself and my family navigate digital terrain. I thought I was a digital nutritionist.”

In an interview with the Guardian, Regehr said she supported the school’s smartphone ban and a growth campaign for a smartphone-free childhood, but these were not enough and more education was needed to help families think critically about their digital choices.

“Even if they refrain from giving their kids smartphones until they are 15, they will still be 16. And they are responsible for providing the tools they need to navigate this space effectively,” she said. “We need to provide education on how these things work.”

Her book, “Why are we all obsessed with the screen and what you can do about it,” is designed to help bridge that gap, and will come with new educational materials introduced at schools later this month.

According to the UK’s first national survey, almost all schools in the UK have banned the use of mobile phones by students during their student days.

Stimulated by concerns about child mental health, attention span and online safety, a survey of over 15,000 schools found that 99.8% of primary schools and 90% of secondary schools were somehow banned.

“I support my free childhood work on smartphones,” says Regehr, program director for the digital humanities at UCL, who previously investigated how algorithms used on social media platforms rapidly amplify extreme misogyny content. “My fear is that when you implement the ban, you can remove schools and lawmakers from the hook because you think they’re done with work.”

Regehr’s book is dedicated to two young girls. “My goal is to look back at our generation, much less healthy and more skill-actively enslaved, just like looking back at previous smoking in the delivery room in a hospital and not wearing a seatbelt.

“I’m trying to make cultural change so that their lives are better. This is the biggest threat to their health and well-being, and that’s what I want to tackle and I believe we can see cultural change. People just need information.”

Smartphone Nation: Why we’re all obsessed with screens and what you can do by Dr. Kaitlyn Regehr is published by Bluebird on May 15th

A Mexican officer killed in an ambush died as a symbol of a fight with the cartel

0

A Mexican federal police officer who survived the 2015 helicopter crash was killed in an ambush on April 30th. He was considered a symbol of the fight against organized crime.

play

After appearing as the sole survivor of the 2015 military helicopter attack, a former Mexican police officer known as a symbol of the fight against drug cartels, died in an ambush on April 30.

The SUV hit a black truck driven by Ivan Morales Colleles. 43. The gunman killed Morales and an unidentified woman in the state of Moraros, 2.5 hours south of Mexico City, and fired more than dozens of shots, according to two retired US drug agents and multiple Mexican media outlets. It is unknown who killed the victim or why. The case is under investigation.

The murder in the city of Temixco – usually a place of peace – came on the 10th anniversary week of the helicopter losers who denounced Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación, known as the CJNG. The cartel is one of Mexico’s most extremists, turning the territory they control into bad zones by using rudimentary tanks, roadside bombs and missing emergers.

“If it were CJNG, it’s a very symbolic demonstration of power,” says Victoria Dittmar, a Mexican cartel expert with Insight Crime, a group studying organized crime. “Now it’s headlines in every newspaper in the country.”

The attack comes amidst a continuing brave strike against Mexican authorities in 2015, which began with cartel soldiers carrying Morales carrying helicopters. Authorities never expected such a direct attack on the military, and it was seen as a fork moment.

Ten years later, attacks on Mexican soldiers and police became common in regional control.

“This group is not as weak as before. Speaking of which, even if it’s getting stronger, we still see this very direct expression of violence against the nation,” Dittmar told USA Today. “They are developing weapons with IEDs and are forced to attack Mexican troops and retreat from certain areas.”

Morales is survived by a 9-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl.

Officers talk about the surviving Chopper attack

Morales was a police officer when a member of the cartel shot down the chopper he was riding on. His survival made him an icon in the fight against drug and cartel violence in Mexico and the United States.

For him, it was about his child.

In 2019, Morales spoke about his survival of a fiery helicopter crash that was severely burned and damaged his appearance during an interview with the Louisville Courier Journal, part of the USA Today Network.

The special report on the CJNG was part of a five-year investigation into the causes of drugs that fueled the deadliest drug outbreak in American history. With over 5,000 members, the powerful supercartel has been criticized along with the infamous Sinaloa cartel for the majority of fentanyl, cocaine and heroin that saturates Kentucky, Tennessee and other US cities.

On the morning of the attack, Morales climbed one of five military helicopters, headed into the darkness and stormed the CJNG compound into rural rural areas in western Jalisco.. He and other federal police officers teamed up with soldiers on a secret mission to arrest Elmencho, the cartel boss.

As the helicopter flew over the CJNG truck and SUV convoy, the cartel members fired grenade launchers and armored guns. Morales raw flames, ran away, and suffered considerable burns. A fellow officer and several soldiers have died.

That day, his then-fiance told him she was pregnant with her first child.

On the day of the crash of the helicopter, Morales knew he might die, but he repeatedly told the soldiers who had erected him with his stretcher why he needed to survive: “I’ll be a dad!”

Morales nearly died of organ failure in a hospital in Mexico City, suffering second and third degree burns, more than 70% of his body. His pregnant fiance continued to stay up all night by his side. Six weeks later, his son was born.

“Knowing that I was going to be a dad motivated me to fight,” Morales said in a 2019 interview.

Morales retained his appearance and was unable to return to work. Four years after the crash, he said it was difficult to deal with stares and whispers from strangers.

One day, his three-year-old son sat on his lap, smacking the scar with his tiny fingers and asking what had happened. Morales will say that he was hurt in the accident because he felt his son was too young to understand the ruthlessness of the cartel. He said he was afraid of the idea that he had to tell him the truth.

What is CJNG?

The brave show of violence in defeating military helicopters surprised law enforcement on both sides of the border, realizing that CJNG leaders were willing to stop them.

Drug Enforcement Agency officials put boss Elmencho on the list of most wanted fugitives, with the State Department providing up to $15 million for information that led to his capture.

Justice Department officials recently celebrated the extradition of 29 cartel leaders from Mexico. Among them were Elmencho’s brother, Antonio Osseguera Cervantes, and Antonio Osseguera Cervantes, known as “Tony Montana.” Both have been charged in federal court in Washington, DC

However, despite important arrests, the cartel bosses remain large and the CJNG remains a powerful force.

“Even important arrests are very exchangeable,” says Dittmar, a native of the state CJNG, insight expert, calling his home. “So, from the perspective of a demonstration of power, there was no difference.

According to Dittmar, CJNG has started as a derivative of the Sinaloa cartel, specialized in the production of methamphetamine. They are not as rich or powerful as their rival cartels, but they inspire a wider range of fear.

“Their use of violence is more aggressive,” Dittmar said. “The CJNG model is to expand, take territory and eliminate previous groups.”

Cartel members posted videos of themselves on social media on rudimentary tanks, forcibly recruiting foot soldiers, changing daily lives in Jalisco and the surrounding states they manage. People should not only avoid going out at night, but also be careful where they step into the daytime for fear of mines.

My hurt father was respected

Morales’s wounded face reminded me of the government’s efforts.

He appeared in several events over the years and symbolized courage in his difficult battles with powerful cartels. The then-Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto praised Morales at an open ceremony.

Despite everything Morales lost, he said he had no regrets.

“I knew the risks,” he said. “I was committed to doing my job.”

Morales expressed optimism that Elmencho’s reign would eventually end.

“That’s not hopeless.”

Trader Joe’s ready-made salad reminded me through milk allergens

play

It was recalled about concerns that several packaged salads sold by Trader Joe’s traders contain undeclared allergens.

The US Food and Drug Administration announced in an April 28th that trader Joe’s sesame flavored o salad and salmon and salmon salad were recalled as it may contain undeclared milk on the label.

According to the FDA, about 500 units of salad were incorrectly packaged in sealed packets of Parmesan cheese crumble, instead of a packet of crispy onion.

According to the announcement, the salad was sold in 18 states nationwide.

This week’s announcement follows Trader Joe’s previous recall for a batch of hot honey mustard dressing that won’t expire until the end of May.

What should customers do with the recalled Trader Joe salad?

According to the FDA, customers should not consume the product if they have milk allergies. Trader Joe added that customers can return it to their local store.

Which Trader Joe’s salad was recalled?

Trader Joe’s Sesame Flavored O Salad and Salmon were recalled due to the possibility of milk allergens.

The affected batches are used on April 28th and 29th year dates and UPC barcode number 00773164 per FDA.

Where was the recalled Trader Joe salad sold?

The recalled salads are Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wascons.

Check out the pantry for recalled Trader Joe dressings

Trader Joe issued a recall in March with Hot Honey Mustard Dressing.

Certain bottles may contain undeclared allergens such as peanuts, sesame, soybeans and wheat, so the recall was issued due to a labeling error, the company said.

Customers who have recall products must throw them away or return them in Trader Joe’s store for a full refund, according to the company.

The affected items had a recall date of May 27, 2025 and were sold in Arkansas, Colorado, Washington, DC, Delaware, Florida and Georgia.

Judges cast Trump’s orders against law firm Perkins Koy

0

play

On Friday, a federal judge removed Donald Trump’s punitive order targeting law firm Perkins Koy as a violation of protections against the free speech and legitimate procedures of the U.S. Constitution in the setback of the Republican president’s campaign against the law industry.

The decision of US District Judge Beryl Howell was first made by a judge’s decision to determine the legal merits of any of several directives aimed at a law firm that dealt with legal challenges in his actions.

Washington-based Howell has banned federal agencies from enforcing a March 6 order against Perkins Koy. The judge had previously issued temporary restraining orders blocking enforcement of key provisions in Trump’s orders.

The Department of Justice may appeal Howell’s order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Perkins Koy, a 1,200-person legal company founded in Seattle, represented the 2016 campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s executive order has threatened to cancel federal contracts held by the company’s clients by attempting to restrict access to government buildings and officials. The company sued, calling it a violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution, and protecting the government’s summary of speeches and the Fifth Amendment Guarantee of legitimate procedures – a requirement for the government to use fair legal proceedings.

The judge’s ruling represents the broadest responsibilities ever for Trump’s pressure campaign against law firms for accusing him and his political allies of “weaponizing” the judicial system. US Department of Justice attorney Richard Lawson defended the order in court, claiming that in each case Trump is legally using the president’s power and discretion.

Three other major law firms — Wilmer Hale, Jenner & Brock and Sussman Godfrey — sued the administration to block an executive order issued by Trump. Other judges temporarily blocked these orders while the case was in progress.

Nine rivals, including Paul Weiss, Latham & Watkins, Skadden Arps and Willkie Farr, have reached a deal with Trump, who avoided punitive action, pledging a free legal service totaling nearly $1 billion to advance the cause he supports.

Trump’s targeting businesses has drawn criticism from many people within the legal industry, with some also criticizing businesses that have reached an agreement that they will fall into the president’s forced.

Perkins Coie claimed it was targeting Clinton’s campaign and work for the company’s policies that promote workplace diversity and inclusion.

Trump’s orders accused Perkins Koy of “illegal and dangerous activities.” It said Perkins “racially discriminates” in employment — referring to the diversity policy of the company’s efforts. Trump and his allies portray policies that discriminate against white people. The order also criticized the company’s work representing Clinton’s campaign.

The companies suing the administration called the orders against them existential threats. They argued that the orders limit their lawyers’ ability to practice the law, and tried to blackmail their clients and seek new lawyers.

Principals’ Union takes legal action against Ofsted over changes to test | Ofsted

0

The principal is taking legal action against Ofsted, a British school watchdog, fearing that the new testing system would be “even worse than before” and would likely be harmful to the mental health of school leaders.

The National Association of Principals said it has submitted a judicial review claim against Ofsted “on the potential impact of the testing proposal.”

Ofsted’s testing regime has been plagued by controversy since its 2023 death in 2023 after the suicide of principal Ruth Perry.

NAHT General Secretary Paul Whiteman said:

“It should not be forgotten that the catalyst for these changes was the tragic death of Ruth Perry and the widespread acceptance of the testing system exposing school leaders to unbearable pressures, but little is apparently considered about the impact on school leadership well-being in the creation of these plans and subsequent consultations.

“School leaders are deeply concerned that new report cards could lead to even worse systems than before, and have potentially disastrous effects on workloads, happiness and retention.

“We’ve been involved with Ofsted and tried to explain this, but so far these concerns have been on deaf ears. We have little option but to pursue this behavior.”

A spokesman for Ofsted said: “Supporting the mental health of the people we test is an important part of the development of the proposal and we have already heard positive feedback through testing.

“Our legal team responded robustly to NAHT. Their proposed claims are clearly unacceptable. If legal action is launched, we will resist and ask for costs.”

The Workers’ Election Manifesto vowed to abolish the single eye examination decision used to rank Perry’s primary school in Berkshire.

Earlier this week, Perry’s sister, Professor Julia Waters, urged the government to suspend the overhaul as it puts a “shame-based” system in place.

Waters told the BBC: “In an investigation into my sister’s death, the coroner warned that if only lip service was paid to learn from tragedy like Ruth’s death, there was a risk of future death.

“But when they began their consultations, neither Ofsted nor the Department of Education mentioned Ruth’s death. Instead, they proposed a new system, an old system that really had some tweaks and was not the radical reforms needed.”

Ofsted’s plans follow a green shade of “safe”, “strong” and “experimental” in each area, using a report card grading school with up to 10 areas, using a color-coded scale ranging from red “concern” to orange “care needs.”

The motion being discussed at the NAHT Annual Meeting in Harrogate directs the union to oppose change “to protect the mental and physical health and well-being of school leaders and staff.”

Jumpers for the Pope are already beginning drinks and dinners in Rome

A private dinner and formal gathering of hundreds of cardinals across Rome, speaks between church leaders who will next lead the church.

play

The Pope has passed away. Hundreds of cardinals gather in Rome. Secret votes for successors have not begun. But among church leaders, experts say, who will lead the next 2,000-year-old church.

Pope Francis, the first head of the Catholic Church in the Americas and advocate for the affiliated people, passed away at the age of 88 on Easter on Monday, leaving an empty seat for the head of the ancient facility, which has 1.4 billion followers around the world. Approximately 250 cardinals, including the chief, were summoned to Italy during the Pope’s funerals and duties.

However, the drama of the Pope’s choice has already begun. The days before the May 7th Conclave at the Vatican were not idle, and the implicit selection process is already underway in whispers in corridors and cafes in other cities in Rome and Italy.

“This is a very important time, because in fact, every election needs momentum,” Robert Harris, author of the novel behind the blockbuster Conclave, told USA Today. “Even if you’re not quite well known, I don’t know how you can do it.

A lot is happening now in terms of the Pope’s politics and attitude. The week before the Conclave is just as important as the Conclave itself, many experts say.

The next Pope’s choice will be made in the Sistine Chapel under the careful eyes of Michelangelo’s final judgment, where the Cardinals vote under the Oath of Secret. The mystery of what happens behind a locked door is inspired by books, podcasts, books nominated for Best Pictures at the latest Academy Awards, podcasts and conclave films.

With private meals and formal gatherings of aperitifs and Cardinals across Rome, church leaders find out who they trust to take over. This process differs from the wheels and trade that became famous for the works of 15th century diplomat and philosopher Niccolo Machaveli, and is another central entity at the heart of Italian history.

Harris, who has come to write a thriller novel about his career as a political journalist, said: “Don’t think of this as an election where someone says, ‘I’ll vote for me.’

Pope’s attitude in Rome

Over 130 Cardinals vote in Conclave. This is limited to cardinals under the age of 80. Francis appointed 108 people. Most come from Europe, but they also represent 20 African and Asian countries, as well as Asian countries from Iraq and Iran to China and Indonesia.

Many people have never met before, and the day leading up to Conclave is when they met.

117 non-voting cardinals also make the most of the time. They may not be able to vote for the next Pope, but they still have a huge amount of shaking and have the only opportunity to express what the church thinks it needs.

Much of the pre-competition debate occurs in formal gatherings of cardinals called generals. Church leaders rarely reveal details of the meeting, but the story of Francis’ own election returns to a speech he gave to Congress in the period before the conversation in 2013, after Pope Benedict XVI resigned.

According to John L. Allen Jr., editor of Catholic news outlet Crux, experts on events at the Vatican say there are already clear signs of potential successors seen in the Cardinal Balthazar Enrique Pola Cardoso.

“Polas, a Venezuelan cardinal, told reporters after he came out of the general that he thought the conclave would end in two days,” Allen, a veteran Vatican whisper, told USA Today over a call from Rome. “That would suggest that consensus is beginning to form. He didn’t say it around anyone, but at least he gave the impression that there was “a kind of consensus that started to take shape.”

The Cardinals are quarantined in the Sistine Chapel and are less than a week after the vote begins.

Private lunch, dinner, drinks

According to Allen, the Cardinals raise the question of who would make a more direct pope more directly with private lunches, dinners and drinks throughout the Italian capital.

According to Allen, an American correspondent based in Rome for the past 30 years, talks about who could become the next Pope goes far beyond the Vatican wall.

“These are also opportunities to crush political sausages, and in such situations the conversation is also very direct. ‘What do you think?’ Allen said. “That’s exactly what this period is about.”

Cardinals’ favorite restaurants include L’Auu Vive, a simple and elegant French restaurant located across from the Vatican on the Tiber River.

Cardinals like Paulette for the atmosphere. The restaurant is run by a woman who is a member of the Catholic religious association Les Travailleuses Missionnaires de L’Mimmaculée.

Diners eat with consideration of the group’s inspirational portrait: St. Telez of Liese. And at 10pm, staff will take a break from service to sing Salbrevina, a Gregorian chant that praises Mary, who dates back at least to the 1200s.

Another destination for the small group of Cardinals is the Borgo district, a medieval alley warren filled with classic Italian eateries in the shadow of Hadrian’s spirit us.

The Rise of the Ratzinger Cardinal – later Pope Benedict XVI – dates back to a block of Cardinals formed on a plate of pasta and wine bottles at Alpassett Diborgo just beyond the Vatican.

Despite captivating Roman restaurants, many cardinals prefer to eat “from the spotlight,” Allen said. They gather at the apartments of colleagues based in Rome and at the headquarters of the religious order.

According to Allen, so far, Cardinals wants a Pope who can take up the mantle of Frances, leading in a caring and positive example, but clarifies the issue of the church to soothe the conservative elements of the church.

“They want people who can inspire people and attract faith, especially in Europe where the church is in need of being open-minded. They want a pope who can light a fire,” Allen said. But “the world is going through uncertain times where the old pillars of the world order seem to be falling apart, so Donald Trump, Vladimir Putinz, and those who can hold themselves on the world stage with Xi Xin pings.”

What you need to become a “Papaville”

The congregation of Cards, potentially all 252 Cards gather together to discuss the looming church issues, is the most public part of the advance process.

According to Bry Jensen, a historian and host of a podcast specializing in Pope history, the general traditionally offers preparations for the Pope’s funeral and days of mourning for the deceased.

However, after the Pope is buried, the cardinals of the General Congregation often turn their attention to the pressing question of who will become the next Pope.

According to the host of the Pontifacts podcast, they are indirectly addressing questions through speeches about what the church needs and what makes something worthy of the “Papaville” or the Pope. The show’s name is a play by Pontifex, a traditional name for the Pope.

“This is where we see the jockeys,” Jensen said. “And we have a lot of very well-known cardinals over 80, so this is where they get their chances.”

According to the Vatican, there are 117 non-voting cardinals.

The Cardinals have held at least seven general congregations so far. Official news from the Vatican about the assembly is landing like a dull sermon.

A total of 183 Cardinals attended the Congress on Tuesday, according to the Vatican official news outlet. Of those, 124 voted for Cardinals and gave 20 speeches.

The Vatican summed them up as addressing “themes related to the church and the challenges it faces, as well as the perspectives of their continent and the places of origin, and reflections shaped by the church’s possible response.”

Jensen said Vaticanologists warned that German conservative Cardinal Gerhard Muller could split if Orthodox successors were not chosen, and Vatican scholars said cardinals outside the formal gathering were private and were watching what was going on.

“It’s about wanting to stick to Francis or break into traditionalism,” Jensen said. “The fact that Muller came out and felt the need to say that the argument was more Francis-oriented.”

A typical congregation also offers a chance for frontrunners to appear, as Francis did in 2013.

At the meeting, Francis gave a compelling four-minute speech about the need for the Church to re-evaluate its mission to exercise compassion for those on society’s ties. Church leaders saw that the man they could trust was Jorge Mario Bergolio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires.

“That’s what the cardinal electors said, um, this would probably be a good candidate,” according to Father Alice Sison, a spokesman for the Parish of Cubao in the Philippines. “We need a church that focuses outside of itself.”

Francis’ speech was later seen as a blueprint for his approach to leading the church. In it, he uses the term “periphery” in particular, referring to the expansion of church outreach to those who were oppressed.

The term became a hallmark of his pope, and ultimately he won him the “peripheral pope.”

Jumper under careful eyes

In widespread speculation about who will become the next Pope, theologians say they are faithfully looking at the jockeys of the pre-conclub as an opportunity for God to intervene in human issues.

According to Notre Dame theologian Jennifer Newsom Martin, the new Pope “does not fall like manna from heaven.” “There is a very realistic process of asserting positions. It is a human process that respects what the Cardinals thinks about what the Church needs at this moment.”

A longtime Catholic university professor emphasized the longevity of the church as an example of how jockeys are guided by higher powers.

“From a theological perspective and Catholic practice perspective, the Catholic Church is clearly a flawed institution, as long as it is clearly filled with humans,” she said. “But the truth of the matter is that it has been endured for many years. So there’s something about the durable apostolic process, not the subject of accidental forces.”

She added: “These are saints who pray and invest in the outcome, and it is difficult to unravel humans from God’s actions.”
