Sovereignty overcame a tough situation and a competitive field with a win in the rainy 2025 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
WASHINGTON – It was a good day for sovereignty, a bad day for journalism, a celebration day for members of the Trump administration.
Two of President Donald Trump’s top aides cheered when sovereignty repeatedly stretched and defeated his favourite journalism to win 151.st Kentucky Derby.
“In the Trump administration, sovereignty always wins,” wrote Stephen Miller, Trump’s Homeland Security Adviser, in X.
Former Fox News personality Pete Hegses, a former Fox News personality who rebutted the press in reports that he shared sensitive military information through unsecured channels, provided his own commentary on the derby finish.
“Sovereignty>Journalism,” he tweeted. “On the track. And in America in 2025.”
Neither Miller nor Hegses mentioned any important details. Junior Alvarado, a jockey who rode the sovereignty of victory, is from Venezuela.
Alvarado’s victory comes as the Trump administration has gone to zero for many Venezuelan immigrants in the United States. He notched the victory just two days after the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to intervene to intervene to strip the Supreme Court of less than 300,000 Venezuelan immigrants of temporary protected status.
The jockey moved to the United States in 2007, where former President Joe Biden designated a Venezuelan eligible for temporary protected status.

She enjoyed a near perfect start to the match. Her powerful groundstrokes overwhelmed Gouf as she won 17 times in a row early to get a first-set lead that was not attacked in the end.
Goff settled in the match, but she was unable to recover that deficit and was left to start the challenge in the second set. A fully executed pass shot guaranteed Gauff had broken Sabalenka early in the second, eventually leveling out the match by playing a set of 5-4.
Sabalenka took a 0-40 lead, but Gouf clinged to save one breakpoint, and the racket slid out of Sabalenka’s hand in the next stage.
It gave Gouf an opening, which she took and engineered the setpoint, but Sabalenka erased the chance again and later broke. In the end, despite Gouf’s best efforts, the set went to a tiebreak, where Sabalenka won and finished the match.
Ukraine claims it was the first time using the Seabone drone to fire down a Russian SU-30 fighter jet in the Black Sea.
“This is the first time in the world that a fighter has been destroyed by a marine drone,” Ukraine’s defense information said in a statement on Saturday, adding that “it was burned into the air and eventually fell into the sea.”
The Ukrainian military intelligence agency said one of its units destroyed fighter jets on Friday, and was a key Russian city in Ukrainian Magra drone near Novorossk port, claiming that Ukraine is a remnant of the Russian Black Sea fleet.
CNN could not independently verify Ukrainian claims.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on the incident, but the claims were supported by Russian military bloggers.
“The Ukrainians brought over 30 sea drones to the Noborossk region… After the jet was attacked, the crew were enveloped in water surrounded by enemy sea drones,” Fighter Bomber said on Saturday.

Kyiv is increasingly turning its eyes to drones to level the arena with Russia, which boasts outstanding talent and resources. Since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, and following further losses after Russia’s 2022 invasion, Ukraine no longer has a navy functioning in the Black Sea.
The drones have proven effective against some of the toughest ships in Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet. They are controlled from afar via Starlink connections and can be pre-programmed for long journeys across the Black Sea.
Last February, Ukraine said it had sunk Ivanovets, a Russian guided missile ship in the Black Sea. Its most notable strike was against Mosqueba in April 2022.
After the attack on Ibanobet, CNN interviewed Ukrainian secret sea drone unit behind a strike at a location near the Ukrainian coastal city of Odesa. One of the drone pilots behind the attack told CNN that 10 Magra drones were used in the attack, six of which were hit and ultimately sank the Russian warship.
One Ukrainian drone pilot told CNN that drones are extremely difficult to see in the open seas and that Russians are difficult to target.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers safety recall reports detailing the issues. According to the report, “GM has launched a product investigation following the notice of an investigation into the alleged engine failure of a GM vehicle equipped with an L87 V8 engine.”

The product investigation opened on January 16th, but GM owners have been complaining about the issue of the L87 V8 engine for months and potentially years, according to the lawsuit, several automotive publications and Reddit forums. “Many people have the same problem as the latest GM V8 seized them while driving in December 2024 when users post about the struggles of the GM V8.
Earlier this month, GM officials released a poll on their thoughts on the severity of the L87 engine issue, calling GM “relatively elusive about the issue.” Poll respondents voted in favor of a serious issue that opposes minors with L87 issues.
General Motors faces lawsuits via V8 engine
The NHTSA claims over the past decades that “vehicle safety development helped increase the number of lives saved annually.” Recently, vehicle safety has improved significantly, but drivers still experience serious vehicle defects that could completely change ownership experience.
One such experience is detailed in a lawsuit filed February 18, 2025 in the Eastern District of U.S. District Court, Southern Division.
“On or around October 22, 2022, the plaintiff (Powell) purchased a new 2023 GMC Yukon Denali manufactured by GM and containing an L87 V8 engine,” the lawsuit states. Powell took the vehicle to a certified GM dealership after the check engine light was on in 2024. After inspection, Powell was informed that the engine was defective and would be replaced by another engine. According to the lawsuit, Powell had problems with the new engine after the replacement.
The lawsuit alleges that a vehicle equipped with an L87 V8 engine “shares a general defect in engine bearings.
The April 24 NHTSA recall notice indicates defects including “connecting rods and/or crankshaft engine components of these vehicles… which could lead to engine damage and engine failure.”
The lawsuit further alleges that “GM has known about the engine defects for several years, but has not disclosed it.”
The lawsuit cites many consumer complaints reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding vehicles equipped with an L87 V8 engine. “It is uncontroversial that GM had knowledge of engine defects prior to March 24, 2023.” This was a few years before the recall was issued. A similar lawsuit was filed early in early April in Georgia.
When asked about the lawsuit, GM’s statement said it was not their policy to comment on the ongoing lawsuit.
What should I do if my GM vehicle is being recalled?
General Motors takes recalls very seriously and pays individual attention to every L87 engine that arrives at the dealership. When asked about the recall, GM said, “We will inspect it and repair or replace the engine if necessary. Vehicles passing through will be provided with a higher viscosity oil.
Therefore, if your vehicle is part of an ongoing recall, you should immediately take it to an approved GM dealer for service to avoid potential engine troubles. Here you can use the vehicle identification number to search for recalls on a specific GM model.
What does recall mean to GM?
Reliability is a major concern for car shoppers. After all, no one wants to deal with car trouble, especially when it can lead to sophisticated mechanic fees and accidents. It is unfair to call an unreliable GM vehicle based on the recall in question. That said, General Motors has complex reliability scores on some of its bestselling models. In contrast, Toyota is producing all of the longest-lasting top five cars, based on research from ISEeCars.com.
Furthermore, GM’s recent recalls are not the only major recalls in recent years. In 2021, General Motors recalled all Chevrolet Bolt models due to fire risk. US President Donald Trump posted his own image of AI as Pope, prompting accusations of bad taste in the Roman Catholic community.
A few days ago, joking that he wanted to be Pope, Trump raised his index finger late Friday to post an image of his digital doctor wearing a white cassock and a pope headdress. It was then re-shared by the White House on the official X account.
Last month, Trump, who is not a Catholic, came less than a week later. The period of official mourning for the Pope is still observed by the Vatican.
While this image does not suggest that it is a serious distraction from the challenge of choosing the next leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to comment on the issue.
“Not funny, teacher,” wrote 66-year-old Filipino Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David in a Facebook post.
New York archbishop Timothy Dolan was also important when journalists were questioned before delivering Mass in Rome on Sunday.
When asked if he was angry at the image, Cardinal Dolan suggested Trump’s favor with the next Pope – “Well, that wasn’t good.”
Similarly, Father Gerald Murray, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York who attended the Mass of Cardinal Dolan Church on Sunday, said Trump’s post was “silly… you won’t.”
Matteo Renzi, the former Italian prime minister, condemned the image as an attack on people of Catholicism. “This is an image that angers followers, humiliates the institutions, and shows that right-wing world leaders enjoy clowns,” he writes in X.
Trump’s post attracted attention from Italian media. “Infant” was the term that Italy’s Daily La Republica condemned as “pathological exaggeration.”
In St. Peter’s Square, CNN asked several groups of American tourists what they thought, and no one asked them if they wanted to give their name, but their reaction ranged from “absurd” to “typical.”
The office of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump’s international ally, said they would not comment on the issue.
The image also spurred backlash among American Catholic groups. The New York State Catholic Conference explains itself to represent the Bishop of New York, which he states in his post X. “There’s nothing smart or interesting about this image, President.
“We have just buried our beloved Pope Francis and Cardinals are about to enter a strict conclave to elect a new successor to St. Peter. Don’t laugh at us.”
However, the White House defended Trump as a professional Catholic.
“President Trump paid tribute to Pope Francis and flew to Italy to attend the funeral. He was a solid champion for Catholics and religious freedom,” spokesperson Carolyn Leavitt said when asked to respond to criticism.
Others in Trump’s circle emphasized that it was a joke.
“I’m Catholic. We’ve all been joking about the future Pope’s choices for the whole week. It’s called a sense of humor.”
This is not the first time Trump has sparked a controversy with AI-generated images. He faced backlash after posting footage imagining war-torn Gaza as a resort like a Gulf state with his golden statue.

American workers “quit the ghost” (check out without actually quitting their job) and pretend to be a job when they actually practice “productivity theatre.” They take paid leave without permission in the form of “hash trips” and “quiet holidays.” They suffer from “Zoom Doom” and are paying “emotional labor tax.” According to the latest polls, things are “quietly cracking.”
They caused a “big resignation” but now they practice “great stays.” Meanwhile, employers are “quietly dismissing” some of them, but “quietly promote” others by giving others more awareness to more work or simply “quietly cut”. Please don’t complain. Please stay quiet.
What’s next? “Mute to work”? “Calendar mess”? “deadline”?
What’s certain is that these reports will not end immediately. They’re catchy and click. They enjoy talking at parties and late-night TV shows. We can all expect more sleazy phrases and clever terms that explain how unhappy our workforce is for a foreseeable future. But we all need to take these reports with a single grain of salt. why?
First of all, although the name is not a name, you can read the link above. Most of these eye-catching conditions are defined by surveys conducted by HR companies, HR media sites, HR software providers and media-focused voting companies. They tend to use the suspicious definition of “statistical sampling” to investigate hundreds of employees from hundreds of millions of workers. And they all have an agenda. Do you want your employees to be happy? Buy the software! Hire our company! Read more of our research! When you get to most of these reports, you’ll find what I found. Science is not a priority.
Secondly, it’s easy to make your employer the bad guy. The man-obsessed investigation is about to get his eyeballs. reality? People I know are mostly happy with their job and understand the pressures that employers face. They are adults who know that work is work and that there is no perfect job.
Again, are you unhappy with your work? We say we want to make things better – we are driven by ambition. I’m not judging happy people who lock their jobs up and shut them down. Good for them. If you are not satisfied with your job, it may be because you want to want more from your life, and that’s normal. Please check if you can change your job. If you fail, change your employer and perhaps start your own business. But in the meantime, you still need to work.
Putin of Russia declares Easter ceasefire in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a one-sided Easter ceasefire in Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin said Russia had enough strength and resources to lead the war in Ukraine to a logical conclusion, but he hoped that it would not have to use nuclear weapons.
Putin ordered thousands of Russian troops to Ukraine in February 2022, causing Europe’s largest ground conflict since World War II, and the greatest conflict between Moscow and the West from the depths of the Cold War.
Hundreds of thousands of soldiers have been killed or injured, and President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end the “Bloodbath” that his administration threw as a proxy war between the US and Russia.
In a state television film about Putin’s quarter as Russia’s Paramount leader, entitled “Russia, Kremlin, Putin, 25 years,” Putin was asked by a reporter about the risks of nuclear escalation from the Ukrainian War.
“They wanted to provoke us, so we wanted to make a mistake,” Putin said next to a portrait of 19th-century conservative emperor Alexander III, who suppressed opposition. “I didn’t need to use these weapons…and I hope they don’t need them.”
“We have enough strength and means to bring about a logical conclusion to what began in 2022 with the outcomes that Russia needs.”
Trump has been signaling for weeks that Moscow and Kiev were unhappy with the failure to reach conditions to end the war, but the Kremlin says the conflict is extremely complicated and it is difficult for Washington to make rapid progress.
Former President Joe Biden, Western European leader, Ukraine has repeatedly vowed to defeat the Russian army, which controls about a fifth of Ukraine.

Supporters cast Putin, who says Russian pollers have a recognition rating of over 85%, pushed back to the arrogant west and ended the chaos that came with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
In a carefully choreographed state television film that gave viewers a rare look behind the Russian president’s infamous closed life, Putin was shown to be offering chocolate and fermented Russian milk drinks to top Kremlin correspondent Pavel Zarbin in his private Kremlin kitchen.
Putin said he was the first to kneel to pray amid the 2002 Moscow Theatre crisis, when Chechnya extremists took 900 people hostages. More than 130 hostages were killed.
“I don’t feel like a certain kind of politician,” Putin said of his 25 years of power as president and prime minister.
“I continue to breathe the exact same air as millions of Russian citizens. That’s very important. God wants it to continue as long as possible and not go away.”

When asked about who he wanted to be elected as the next Pope, President Donald Trump joked before saying he had no preference.
President Donald Trump’s recent joke is that apart from “wanting to be Pope,” the possibility that the next Pope is from the United States is not very good.

Still, the two Americans who are attracting attention were Cardinal Raymond Burke, 76, who criticized Francis for Francis’ progressive actions as a Vatican High Court judge in 2014, and Cardinal Joseph Tobin, 72, Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey.
Melissa Wilde, a sociologist of religion and inequality and chairman of the University of Pennsylvania’s sociology department, acknowledged that it would be difficult for the Cardinal to predict when the Conclaves will gather. However, she shared her perception with USA Today based on geography.
“It’s not another Latin America, maybe not American, but this could be a wild card,” she said. “I think Asians and Africans are Italian, if not American, if not American.”
Pastor James Bretzke, a professor of theology at John Carroll University in Ohio, showed that he believes Americans could fall on the list more. Burke, for example, may win several votes in the early rounds.
Bretzke says that the Pope is a diplomat that must be accepted worldwide, and the Pope must appear to represent a cross-section of the world. In the past, Italians were considered diplomats within the church, and thus were more accepted across ethnic groups – this now seems less important, he said.
“But in my opinion these considerations will continue to prevent Americans from being elected to the next Pope. “The image of America in the world is simply powerful, dull and ugly.”
Pastor Patrick Flanagan, an associate professor of theology and religion studies at St. John’s University in New York, says he saw various reviews of “The Elite Eight, Fabulous Four and the latest May Madness Chart.” However, he emphasized the saying “Papal Cardinal.” That is, anyone who enters the Conclave with the idea that they will become Pope will usually end the cardinal.

Katie Ledecky lowered the mark he set almost a decade ago at the 2016 Rio Olympics, creating a sparkling swim on Saturday to break yet another world record with the women’s 800m freestyle.
She recorded an 8:04.12 hour on the Tyr Pro Swim Series Fort Lauderdale, shaving sixth of a second from her previous record, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. She currently holds the top ten recorded so far at the event.
For almost 13 years, Ledecky dominated long-distance freestyle swimming, recording that no one else could touch and often unable to compete with himself.
But seven years have passed since America’s last world record. Her powers faded, people were presumed, and she was still able to collect titles, but never set the incredibly fast time that defined her previous career.
Still, her recent results suggest that Ledecky is once again close to those heights. On Wednesday, she set the second fastest time in the women’s 1500m freestyle, completing the distance at 15:24.51 before Saturday’s world record.
“I can’t stop smiling, but it’s been the case for the whole week, so it’s not really new,” she said in response to a US swimming after the race. “It’s been years since I did that tonight. It was an incredible night.”
“The crowd was amazing tonight. We couldn’t do it without it. I flipped over at 750. And it was roaring here.
Ledecky touched the wall, looked up at the screen to see her time, and the crowd erupted, knowing she had broken the record. Just a second later, Ledecky celebrated like that, shattering the water with his hands and raising his fist in victory.
And on the same day, her fellow countryman Gretchen Walsh became the first woman to complete a 100m butterfly within 55 seconds, recording a time of 54.60, lowering the world record set earlier that day.
After his record, Ledecky said, “Tonight is the first (record) when another American did it. I hated Gretchen this morning to roll us up and start a world record party.”

Now, the pair and team of scientists share the latest research into antivenoms that can protect mice from toxins from 19 venomous snake species. Anti-vivenom is based on toxic blockers and antibodies, as well as antibodies from Friede’s blood samples. Researchers hope to one day carry out clinical trials in humans.
“But we are all very surprised that everyone is trying to do what Tim has done. Snake poison is dangerous,” said Glanville, CEO of Biotech Company Centivax.

The failed intercept of missiles fired from Yemen forced Israel to temporarily close major international airports on Sunday, exposing the continued ability of the Hauti rebels to attack distant targets despite the persistent US military campaign.
Following Israeli forces said it was “some attempts” during intercept, flights stopped for about 30 minutes at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv on Sunday morning. “The results of the intercept are under review,” the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) said.
The military fired long-range arrow interceptors with incoming missiles, an IDF spokesperson said. The US also has advanced THAAD anti-missile systems deployed in Israel.
The Iran-backed Hooti rebel group in Yemen argued responsibility for the attack and said it was carried out “in denial of (Israel) genocide” against the people of Gaza.
This strike appears to be the first time an Israeli international airport has successfully targeted a group’s target.
“The US and Israeli defense systems have failed to intercept missiles intended for Ben Gurion Airport,” group spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement, adding that the airport targeted “hypersensitive ballistic missiles.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to further attacks on the Houtis.
“We’ve acted before, we’ll act in the future too. I can’t elaborate all of that. The US works with us to work against them.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz warned that the response would be “seven times more.”
Israeli officials say the Israeli security cabinet will convened on Sunday afternoon to discuss the incident.
The incident marks a major security breaches at one of the country’s most heavily protected sites, and despite its exaggerated missile defense system, it could raise questions about Israel’s ability to intercept such attacks.
Trains with the airport have also been stopped, and police have asked the public to refrain from arriving in the area.
Photos from the scene showed missiles impacting the airport site, scattering the road towards the main terminal. Videos shared on social media appeared to show the effects of missiles at the airport and clouds of black smoke rising from the strike.
A spokesman for the Lufthansa Group told CNN that Lufthansa, Switzerland, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings have suspended flights until Tuesday, May 6th.
Amir Bah Shalom, a military analyst for Israeli Army Radio, said the missiles demonstrated both incredible accuracy and their ability to penetrate Israeli air defenses.
“They are impressive because they are very accurate and are very accurate when they are on sale from 2,000 kilometres,” Barshalom told CNN. “And you have to take this threat seriously. We need to see if it’s our mistake, or if there’s a new kind of threat here.”
Iran is developing long-range missiles that can be piloted to avoid air defense, Bar Shalom said, but it remains unclear whether such advanced technology has been transferred to the Housys. He added that the troops will analyze all aspects of the failed intercept attempt, including when the sensor detects an incoming projectile, when it identifies it, and how the interceptors came close to the missile.
“There are so many parameters that can be related to the outcome that needs to be analyzed,” he said.
Hamas, a Palestinian extremist group, praised the attack, calling Yemen “the Palestinian twins “continually ignore the most cruel forces of oppression and continue to refuse submission or defeat despite the face of the attack.”
The strike on Sunday marks the third day in a row, with the missile launch from Yemen to Israel from Yemen, according to the IDF.
Houthis claims their irritating missiles have stealth technology, 2,150 km (1,335 miles) range, high maneuverability, and can travel to Mach 16 speeds.
Since the Israeli war with Hamas in Gaza began in October 2023, the country has been fired from missiles and rockets from Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Houtis, Yemen, who claim to attack Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians. Almost all projectiles are intercepted by Israeli air defense.
However, in December, the Houthi missile collided with Israeli commercial capital Tel Aviv after a failed intercept, causing more than dozens of injuries. Houthis said it had fired a polar ballistic missile labelled “Palestine 2” at Israeli forces’ targets in the Jaffa region. And in July, Houthis claimed responsibility for a fatal drone attack in Tel Aviv. This is the first such strike by the group against the city.
Israel launched several strikes against Yemen’s Houtsis in January, including targets at power plants and sea ports.
However, the US military has been implementing much broader strikes against Yemen’s targets in recent weeks, aiming to undermine groups whose attacks on transport in the Red Sea have significantly disrupted global trade.
The campaign also aims to halt launches targeted at Israel. It is also intended for commercial and US Navy vessels operating in the Middle East. Earlier last month, our costs were approaching $1 billion in just three weeks, including the deployment of B-2 stealth bombers and the use of hundreds of millions of dollars in high-end ammunition.
However, disrupting the ability of the Houtis to launch ballistic missiles against Israel has largely failed. The country’s proud missile defense system regularly intercepts launches, but some have passed through.

Southern California may be known for its celebrities and glamour, but the real action was about 40 miles from Hollywood, dominated by highly visible coveralls and hard hats.
For the past 25 years, the San Pedro Bayport Complex, consisting of the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach, has been a world famous for shipping and an economic driver of California’s large economy. Around 15,000 longshore workers, the busiest ports in the Western Hemisphere and one of the busiest ports in the world, usually shift 24 hours a day, moving billions of dollars worth of cargo into cars, agriculture, auto parts, toys, clothing and furniture.
However, this week, the port is shining a little brighter. About a third of the port’s traffic will be stopped as a result of the Trump administration’s decision to impose imports on a minimum of 10% tariffs (and a much higher tax for goods from 57 countries).
With more than 70% of dock workers living within a 10-mile radius of the complex, the waterfront communities in San Pedro, Wilmington and Long Beach in LA are expected to be the first hit of slowdowns, said Gary Herrera, president of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) local 13.
“One of the five jobs in Southern California is tied to the port — warehouse workers, truckers, logistic teams, etc.” said Herrera, who has been a virtuous worker since 1998. Herrera is called the inland empire of LA, including Riverside and San Bernardino, which provides as Warehous Centers that provide centers as Warehous Centers such as Amart such as Walmart and Amerton, and Amazon-like reports such as Amazon-like Amazon-like reports. Freight railways are also seriously affected.
What happens at the port doesn’t just stay at the port, reverberated to longtime labor activist and former Port of Los Angeles commissioner Diane Middleton. “The cargo coming here will be sent to all 435 US Congressional districts anyway. Everyone in the US will feel this.”
Ports that handle 40% of all containerized imports into the country are widely seen as a precursor to the entire US economy. Dock was amazed during the months leading up to the election and inauguration. The large retailers in particular were frontloading. This was because they were raising the product out of fear of the future. With the tariffs here, experts say front-loaded stock only lasts 6-8 weeks.
Trump, who has issued the strictest tariffs on China, Vietnam and Cambodia, calls his April 2nd announcement “liberation day.” But for those who are quickly affected, chaos and anxiety are better ways to explain it.
Trump has issued dizzying statements, and sometimes even suggests that certain tariffs may not last, Middleton noted. “He says, ‘I’m negotiating 200 deals, and I’ll have a deal with China soon,'” Middleton said. “And the Chinese say, “We haven’t spoken to anyone.” So there is a contradiction and who do you believe? ”

Vivian Maraul, a longshore worker at Nightshift, believes in what she sees. “When a ship is docked into the Berth, we are busy. There are mannings, temporary work, job hunting, 24-hour operations during the day and overnight, and there is something called “foot.” “Currently, there are few imports and few ships calling terminals,” said Marauul, who is also a 13 local officer.
Workers who previously recorded full workers have already been reduced to three or four shifts. She and her colleagues are used to the job of all paying union members and now they are fastening their wallet strings. It eliminates the luxury of family outings and entertainment. “There’s definitely concern at the dock,” Marauol said.
Based on the West Coast, Ilwu has a long history of supporting progressive ideas. Vice President Ilwu Brandi Good spoke briefly at Bernie Sanders’ recent “Standing To Oligarchy” rally in downtown Los Angeles, along with several other union representatives.
However, Maraul said not all individual members rejected Trump. He was not even a counterpart of Ilw on the East Coast – International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). Ira President Harold Daggett made a well-published visit with Trump in Mar a Lago.
“Some members were drawn to Trump because they sounded like many working-class Americans around the country, like he was talking directly to them,” Marauol said. She said the message about “reclaiming work,” “hard in China,” and protecting the American industry felt it was in line with labor values. Maraul says that too many people didn’t take the time to actually delve into Trump’s policies and potential impacts. Now they are experiencing results.
But Herrera hopes that the focus among dock workers can remain strong and unity. Due to its California location, the port here gets more traffic from Asia. However, all US ports and strength workers are affected negatively. They need to stick together, he says.
“We are the most resilient workforce in the world. During the community pandemic, we were unable to work remotely, so we kept the world’s cargo moving. Now, in this situation, at the end of the day, we hope that at the end of the day, American workers, blue-collar workers, that’s about the injury and consumers and the community.
However, the waterfront situation does not seem to be resolved anytime soon. In mid-April, the Trump administration announced new rules that will gradually progressively gradualize port fares for many vessels built in China. Jamieson Greer, head of the US Trade Representative (USTR), which created the rules, said the fees were designed to “reverse China’s control, address threats to the US supply chain, and send demand signals for US construction vessels.”
According to the USTR lawsuit, the first phase will be $50 per net tonne per airline, increasing to $140 per net tonne by April 17, 2028, amounting to millions, but will be charged up to five times a year per ship, according to the USTR lawsuit. The charges will be dialed after they are first floated by the Trump administration, and there may be additional carvouts, but Beijing is still vowing to retaliate.
The Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach have tripled the expected number of blank sails. The port projects a total blank voyage this month, from 10 to 30 in April.
“The men and women in Ilw are strong and resilient. We are used to the peaks and valleys, so for now we are trying to stay as positive as possible,” Herrera said. “When we get back at work, we’ll be here.”
Defense Secretary Hegus visits troops in the “Defense Area”
New Mexico’s Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses will visit the military in a newly formed “defense area” along the US/Mexico border.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday that US President Donald Trump proposed sending US troops to Mexico to fight drug trafficking but rejected the offer because “the sovereignty has not been sold.”
Sinbaum’s comments responded to questions about the Wall Street Journal Report, which was released on May 2, saying Trump is putting pressure on Mexico to combat human trafficking across shared borders.
“In one of (Trumps), I said, ‘Can I help you fight drug trafficking? I suggest that the US military come in to help you,'” said Sinbaum, who spoke at a university event near the capital on Saturday.
“And do you know what I told him? No, President Trump, territory is sacred, sovereignty is sacred, sovereignty is not sold, sovereignty is loved and defended,” the president said.
The National Security Council responded to a request for comment that Trump “has made clear that Mexico must do more to fight these gangs and cartels, and that the US is ready to support and expand the already close cooperation between our two countries.”
The council added that Trump worked closely with Shainbaum to achieve “the safest southwest border in history,” but that “dangerous foreign terrorist organizations continue to threaten drugs and crime that threaten our shared security and the drugs and crime they have spread.”
The White House did not immediately respond when asked by Reuters whether Trump raised a military deployment with Sinbaum.
Trump publicly said that if Mexico fails to dismantle the drug cartel, the US will take unilateral military action. The two leaders have received several calls in recent months to discuss security issues, trade and immigration.
In one of the phones, Shanebaum explained that she asked Trump for help to prevent him from entering Mexico from the US, fueling violence and human trafficking.
“We can work together, we can work together, but you can do it on your territory, we can do it on ours,” Sinbaum said.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that tensions between the two leaders had risen towards the end of their April 16 phone conversation.
In February, the US designated the Sinaloa Cartel and other Mexican drug cartels as global terrorist organizations. Analysts could be a stepping stone for such military action.
Air surveillance of Mexican drug cartels by the US military is also increasing. This is increasing as part of an effort to gather intelligence to determine the best way to work for their activities.
Sinbaum later proposed constitutional reforms aimed at adding protection to Mexican national sovereignty.

What is the ETA Aquarid Meteor Shower?
Most meteor showers are the result of Earth passing through the fragments left by comets, NASA explains. These split meteor materials fall on Earth and burn out in Earth’s atmosphere, creating what we know as “shooting stars.”
This happens every day (NASA scientists estimate that 48.5 tonnes of material falls on the planet every day). When the number of meteors in Earth’s atmosphere increases dramatically, that is what is called a meteor shower. As the 28-year-old rounded up the base, his father portrayed him in a gorgeous box with his wife, Kody’s mother Debbie, and Kody’s wife Jessica.
“It was amazing,” Roger Clemens said according to the Associated Press. “Think about it – I’m dressed in his shoes – despite him being my child, he’s here in Fenway and he clearly wants to work well.
“I’m happy that we’re here, just a great moment,” he added, confirming that his friend had retrieved the ball for the Clemens family.
Clemens’ Homer proved to be decisive in the end. The twins won 4-3, snapping their four-game losing streak.
“It’s a big home run for us as a team, but it’s a sweet moment,” manager Rocco Bardeli said. “He has his whole family here. He’s in Fenway Park. Obviously, his dad had a lot of history in this place with these fans.
“It must be one of the biggest moments – no matter what he does, I hope he plays for another 15 years, but that’s something he will never forget, and I will never forget.”

Singapore’s People’s Action Party won its 14th consecutive election on Saturday, extending the unbroken six-year rule and conveying a strong mandate to the new prime minister as a city-state equipment for economic disruption from the World Trade War.
The PAP, which has been ruling before Singapore’s 1965 independence, won 87 seats out of 97 parliaments, winning large margins in many of its 33 constituencies, failing to expand its profits in previous contests.
The election was a breath of popular morals amidst signs of disillusionment, where six million people were in power in the Asian financial hub, where no other kind of government was known.
The PAP has consistently won around 90% of its seats, but its share of the popularity poll has been closely monitored as a measure of the strength of its mission, with Prime Minister Lawrence Won wanting to leave a mark in his first election after one of his worst performances on record.
The PAP has not yet been officially declared a winner, but local media said it accounted for 65.57% of the vote, surpassing the 61.2% achieved in the 2020 contest.
The result is considered public support for the squealing of Wong, 52, who was US-educated and became Singapore’s fourth prime minister last year.
He took over at the end of the two-year prime minister, Lee Hucien Long, son of former leader Lee Quang Yu, the founder of Modern Singapore.
Wong needs to deal with high living costs and housing shortages. The sustained problem in one of the world’s most expensive cities faces the risk of recession and unemployment if the trade-dependent economy was hit by a trade war caused by steep US tariffs.
Wong thanked his members and said, “We are once again grateful for your strong obligation. We respect that.”
PAP victory remains the status quo, but the margins of victory in most races are important, with opposing candidates winning more than two-thirds of the vote in 18 of 33 constituencies.
“Voters spoke, they voted for stability, continuity and certainty — and they voted to give Prime Minister Lawrence Wong a strong order,” said Mustafa Izudin, a senior assistant lecturer at the National University of Singapore.
The PAP defeat is always very unlikely, but some analysts have said that if the opposition party benefited more, the election could have changed political dynamics in the future.
But that may take time. Like the previous election, Saturday was a biased event, with 46% of all candidates representing the PAP.
The ruling party ran in all seats, but won 10 seats Pap didn’t win, compared to just 26 members of the Workers’ Party.
PAP has a larger membership that affects state agencies, influences state agencies, and has far greater resources than untested enemies.
Joshua Krulanzik, a senior fellow in Southeast Asia and South Asia at the Council of Foreign Relations, said Pap’s decisive victory fell on Singaporeans who support known amounts at times of uncertainty.
“It’s a flight to safety — I don’t want to turn into a new party amid the biggest global trade tension in decades,” he said.
“The same problem lies there, just because they’re rocks in times of trouble (it).
What government layoffs in US national parks mean on your next trip
National Parks Service reported 331.9 million visits in 2024. However, the White House could cut jobs and impact travelers.
A new budget proposal from President Donald Trump will cut the country’s national parks, monuments, historic sites, coasts and road budgets by almost 25%, handing over many of them to the state.
The proposal suggests it will cut more than $1.2 billion from its $4.8 billion park services budget. It quickly sparked anger from leaders of organizations dedicated to national parks and recreational lands. He had already expressed concern about the reduction in staff orders by the government’s efficiency department and other plans raised by Home Secretary Doug Burgham.
“It’s nothing more than a full attack on American national parks,” said Teresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Park Conservation Association, a nonprofit advocacy group. “This is the most extreme, unrealistic and destructive national park services budget the president has ever proposed in the agency’s 109-year history.”
In total, Park Services Reductions are one of more than $33 billion in proposed cuts in budget proposals related to parks and public lands, environmental management, conservation and science-related programs and grants.
The Western Priority Center called the budget a “dark vision for American parks and public lands.”
Park Services lost 2,400 to 2,500 employees and more than 10% of its staff, including fired probation employees and other employees who accepted voluntary acquisitions or early retirements. In total, 433 units are the country’s “large legacy,” Pierno said. “Efforts to hand over many of these sites to America are betrayal, and the American people don’t support it.”
Proposed budget cuts
The budget suggests cutting:
$900 million from Park Service Operation
$158 million from historic preservation
$77 million for reservations and preservation funds
$73 million from the construction of the national park, according to the Parks organization.
The proposal suggests that Park Services’ Historic Preservation Funds are overlapping and often fund projects of “local importance, not national.”
The budget accused the Biden administration of “waste of federal funds” on construction projects at sites that are better managed at the local level. He also said the cuts would “complete the administration’s agenda of federalism and the transfer of small, visited parks to state and tribal governments.
The budget said many projects that receive national recreation and conservation grants “have not been directly linked to the maintenance of national parks or public lands. This has a large backlog of maintenance and is more important to address than community recreation initiatives.”
Park Services does not have a confirmed director yet after the departure of Chuck Sams, who served during the Biden administration. Park Services went without confirmed oversight throughout Trump’s first term.

A fan who fell on the field at PNC Park earlier this week was identified as Bagna Markwood, who “wakes up and continues to work hard every day to make his body stronger,” according to a social media post from his girlfriend Alona Brown.
The update was also posted on the family GoFundMe. The GoFundMe raised more than $27,000 on Saturday evening.
“At this point, he needs rest, peace, prayer, privacy and all the positive thoughts and energy you can send as he continues his journey,” Brown writes. “…Please put your bag in your thoughts.”
The family has not responded to requests for CNN details.
The incident occurred in seven innings of Wednesday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Markwood, 20, fell from the right field wall onto the field and was listed in danger.
Players from both teams could be seen kneeling, while the other teams put their hands on their heads in concern for the injured fan.
The autumn is being treated as an accident, police said earlier.
“As of this morning, the bag can wake up, be vigilant and speak,” wrote Jennifer Phillips, who identified himself as Brown’s mother.
“After everything he has experienced since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress is nothing but a miracle.

Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022. In a post sent to CNN, the school said that he was the team MVP of the soccer team and earned the honors of the first team’s all-conference.
“The bag is best known for his resilience, strength and kindness. He is a friend of all. He is someone who lifts up others and faces challenges with courage and grace.”
Markwood played college football at Walsh University and Wheeling University.
“The Wheeling University community is heartbroken to hear of the tragedy that took place at PNC Park, involving former Wheeling football player Kaban Markwood,” the school said in a statement Thursday. “Baan is a precious member of our Cardinal Family. He played on the soccer team for the 2023 season after transferring from Walsh University. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bagan, his family, friends and his loved ones.
