Japan and China are accusing each other of violating the Japan-controlled airspace around the East China Sea Island, which Beijing claims.

The latest territorial flaps were born because both appeared to have a warm connection while trying to alleviate damage from the US tariff war.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry said it submitted a “very harsh protest” with Beijing after a Chinese helicopter took off from one of China’s four coast guard boats. The helicopter violated Japan’s airspace for about 15 minutes on Saturday, the ministry said.

The statement called the incident “an invasion of Japanese territorial airspace” and urged the Chinese government to ensure precautions.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces responded by scrambling fighter jets that had scrambled them.

China also protested Tokyo on a Japanese civil aircraft violating the airspace around the island, saying it was “strongly dissatisfied” about Japan’s “serious violation of China’s sovereignty,” according to a statement from Japan’s Chinese embassy on Saturday.

The Chinese Coast Guard said it “supposedly took necessary control measures in accordance with the law,” and sent ship-mediated helicopters to warn and drive Japanese aircraft away.

Japanese officials are investigating possible connections between the helicopters of China’s Coast Guard helicopters’ airspace invasion and small Japanese aircraft flying around the same time.

China routinely sends coast guard ships and aircraft to the water and airspace surrounding the islands that China calls Diayu, harassing Japanese ships in the area, and promptly mobilizing jets to Japan.

Saturday’s invasion was China’s first since a Chinese reconnaissance aircraft violated Japanese airspace off the southern prefecture of Nagasaki in August. Chinese aircraft have also violated Japanese airspace around Senkaku twice in the past.

President Donald Trump updated his threat to use military force to annex Greenland, and in an NBC news interview he said he would not rule it out to make Danish autonomous territory part of the United States.

This is the latest in many comments by Trump on seizing control over a resource-rich island, and he argues what the US needs for national security purposes.

“I won’t rule that out,” he told NBC News’ Kristen Welker in an interview that aired Sunday. “I’m not saying I’m going to do that, but I won’t rule out anything.”

“We need Greenland very badly,” Trump said. “Greenland is a very small number of people, we take care of them. And we take care of them. That’s all. But it’s necessary for international security.”

He doubted that it would happen, but added that the possibility is “certainly” there.

Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in buying the island or taking it by the US either by forced or economic coercion, even if NATO Ally Denmark and Greenland firmly reject the idea.

There are several factors that will make it interesting. Greenland holds a unique geopolitical position sitting between the US and Europe, and could help fight off potential attacks from Russia, experts say. It is also part of the Kingdom Gap, a strategic maritime region along the main shipping lanes and is a unified marine region.

But experts also suspect Trump is turning to other aspects of Greenland. It could become more accessible as climate change melts territorial ice, such as a herd of natural resources. These include oil and gas, as well as rare earth metals in high demand for electric vehicles, wind turbines and military equipment.

Since Trump began speaking out about his presidency plans in December, his desire to annex Greenland has raised questions about the island’s future security as the US, Russia and China are seeking influence in the Arctic Circle.

However, Greenland pushed back hard.

“President Trump says the US will acquire Greenland.” Let’s be clear. The United States does not belong to anyone else.

Greenland is not the only sovereign territory, Trump has his point of view. The president repeatedly threatened to annex Canada, turning it into the “51st state” of the United States, worsening relations between the two long-standing allies.

Last week, Canada’s liberals were forced to win the federal election, with Prime Minister Mark Carney riding a wave of anti-Trump sentiment and using his victory speech to declare that Canada would never “never” give to the United States.

In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Trump said it was “highly unlikely” to use military force in his appendix to Canada.

“I haven’t seen it with Canada. I’m not seeing it, I have to be honest with you,” he said.

He spoke on the phone with Carney after winning the election, adding that he called the Canadian leader “a very nice guy.” Trump was blessing Carney, but they didn’t discuss the threat of Canada’s annexation, he said.

Kearney is scheduled to visit Trump in Washington on Tuesday. When asked if the topic would appear during that visit, Trump replied: “I always talk about it.”

If Canada is a province, “it would be great,” Trump added. “It will become a precious state.”

Hamas executed six Palestinians in Gaza and shot 13 people in the legs on suspicion of looting, the extremist group said in a statement.

In a statement issued Friday, Hamas said he would carry out further executions against “all criminals that can be reached in the next two days.”

According to Gaza CNN journalists, armed gangs have taken more and more into the streets of Gaza city last week, challenging them to control some of the remaining groceries and territory. Hamas claims that some of these “criminal gangs” are working with Israel.

“A warning has been issued – anyone who ignores it will be fully responsible,” Hamas said in a statement.

The executions and the Hamas Oath that continues – remind us that the militant groups, which have been weakened after more than 18 months of war, remain in power in Gaza.

As food supplies began to run across the coastal enclaves, Palestinians became increasingly desperate to find what food was left. Thousands of people raided multiple warehouses in Gaza city, searching for food wreckage in Gaza city, according to journalists who witnessed such incidents.

Hamas claimed that some of the marauders were working with Israel.

On Saturday, Hamas’s Ministry of Interior and National Security alleged that “groups of collaborators with the occupation have appeared to threaten the lives of citizens, spread fear and confusion in several regions, and attack public and private property.”

The mass hunger scene has become much more common as Gaza’s 2.1 million Palestinian population is closer to hunger. Israel imposed a complete blockade of Gaza on March 2nd, halting the supply of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to the besieged territory.

Dr Ahmad Alfara, director of the Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza, warned over the weekend that “the looming health catastrophe threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.”

“We are at the risk of a massive wave of death due to malnutrition if the current humanitarian crisis is not approved,” he told CNN. Earlier on Saturday, two months of Janan Saleh al-Sakkafi died of malnutrition at Al-Lantisi Hospital.

The US State Department said humanitarian announcements could be made “in the coming days” to allow much-needed food and medicine to reach the Palestinian population without detouring to Hamas or Islamic jihad.

“Safeguards are finally here. Israel remains safe, Hamas is empty-handed, and Gazan can use critical aid,” a State Department spokesperson said.

The spokesman described the project as an element of “creative thinking,” but did not provide details on how it works in Gaza. The unnamed private foundation will govern the aid mechanism and the provision of humanitarian supplies to Gaza, a spokesperson said.

Since taking power in the enclave in 2007, Hamas has carried out dozens of suspects, including those accused of working with Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces are looming with Eyal Zamir’s Chief of Staff on Sunday, as the IDF issues “tens of thousands” orders to reserves next week and strengthens the attacks on the enclave.

Brazilian police said on Sunday that two people were arrested in connection with a conspiracy that allegedly exploded an explosive at a free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro.

Saturday’s Rio event was the biggest show of the pop star’s career, attracting over 2 million fans to Copacabana Beach, with crowds screaming and dancing.

Even if Brazilian authorities said they had arrested the suspect hours before Mrs. Gaga’s show, the event went unconfused, with some questioning the seriousness of the threat. Serious security concerns usually lead organizers to cancel such large events, as happened at Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna last year.

Police said they had no words about the suspected conspiracy at the time, including efforts to “avoid panic” and “information distortion.”

On Sunday, a Lady Gaga spokesman said the pop star and her team “learned about this threat through media coverage this morning. There were no known safety concerns before and after the show, nor did they communicate with Mrs. Gaga from police or authorities regarding potential risks.”

The statement added: “Her team worked closely with law enforcement through concert planning and enforcement, and all stakeholders were confident in their safety measures.”

Security was tight at the concert on Saturday. 5,200 military personnel and police officers were deployed on the beach, and fans became something of an LGBTQ anthem after its release in 2011.

The state police in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil’s Department of Justice presented a naked outline of the plot that involved groups that encouraged hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community and planned to explode homemade explosive devices at the event.

“The plan was treated as a ‘collective challenge’ with the aim of gaining infamy on social media,” police said. The group added that it spread violent content to teenagers online as a “form of belonging.”

Authorities arrested the two in connection with the alleged conspiracy. He is said to be the leader of the group on suspicion of illegal weapon possession in the southern state of Rio Grande du Rusul, and is a Rio teenager on child pornography charges. Police did not elaborate on their precise role in the plot or how the group targeted Mrs. Gaga’s free concert.

“Officers recruited participants, including teenagers, to carry out a combined attack using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails,” police said.

The Justice Department said it determined that the group would raise “the risk of public order.” The group said it was mispresented online as “Little Monster” (the nickname of Lady Gaga fans) in order to reach teenagers and seduce them into a “network with violent, self-destructive content.”

The ministry said it would not affect those who attend outdoor concerts.

During a series of attacks on the homes of 15 suspects in several Brazilian states, authorities confiscated telephones and other electronic devices. Police said they believe the homemade bombs are intended for use in planned attacks, but no mention of attacks that raise weapons or explosives was made.

In a post on Instagram, Lady Gaga thanked the enormous crowd who said nothing about the suspicious plot.

“I couldn’t prepare me for the feelings I had on last night’s show. It’s the absolute pride and joy I felt like singing for the people of Brazil,” she writes. “The sight of the crowd during the opening song gave me a breath of breath. Your heart is shining so brightly. Your culture is so lively and special. We hope you will find that you are grateful for sharing this historic moment with you.”

Her free beach concerts stood out at the point where concert participants spiked live music ticket prices around the world as they paid a budget-breaking cost to see their favorite artists.

Rio has done this before. Last May, superstar Madonna held her latest World Tower finale for around 1.6 million fans in the vast sands of Copacabana Beach.

French police rescued the father of a cryptocurrency entrepreneur from a lureman on Saturday night, but found out that one of his fingers had been cut off.

The victim, not publicly identified, was forced into the van Thursday morning by four men wearing ski masks on a street in Paris. He had been hostages from the southern French capital, 12 miles south of the French capital, before being rescued.

According to CNN affiliate BFM TV, the temptation contacted the victim’s son and sent a video of the mutilated victim with ransom money.

Five people, ages 23 to 27, were taken to police custody following the attack, according to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office.

The temptation shares remarkable similarities with other recent temptations related to cryptocurrencies in France and its surrounding countries.

In January 2025, David Balland, co-founder of Crypto Wallet Company Ledger, was invited to his wife from his home in central France.

Before the couple was released by the police, the assailant cut Ballands’ fingers and sent a video of the cut attachment to his business partner Eric Raschebek, demanding ransom money.

In December 2024, Crypto Investor’s wife and influencer Stéphane Winkel was invited from the Belgian couple’s home. She was rescued after her temptation crashed his car in a dramatic police chase, Winkel wrote in X’s post.

It is unknown whether they are connected like the recent cipher-tricking temptation.

“Obviously, there’s at least a link to the trick. Now, investigators say whether it’s the same team or not,” internal security expert Guillaume Farde said he was speaking on French television Sunday.

Police have launched an investigation into the latest inductions, including organized gangs and criminal conspiracy terror, the Paris prosecutor’s office told CNN.

Like other rituals and traditions that accompany the emergence of the new pope, his newly chosen name has been ingrained in Catholic history over the centuries, and is analyzed for its many meanings.

Changing his name was one of the first actions the new Pope takes as head of the Roman Catholic Church, and could play a very symbolic role in setting the tone of his Pope.

It is a precedent set in the early Middle Ages, and although there is no doctrinal reason for the Pope to choose a new name, it has become part of the election process.

So how does this tradition mean, what is the meaning behind the names of the various popes, what names can the next pope choose, and how will it be announced?

Saint Peter, the first Pope and one of the 12 apostles, was renamed by Jesus from Simon’s birth name, before he became head of the church.

Another 500 years pass before Pope John II, the head of the church between the ages of 533 and 535, began the Pope tradition when he abandoned the name Mercurius.

The next pope who changed his name was Peter Canepanova in the 10th century. He became John XIV to avoid being called Peter II (more details below), said Liam Temple, an assistant professor of Catholic History at the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University.

From the 10th century onwards, popes from countries such as France and Germany adopted more Italian names to mimic their predecessors, so taking another name made the pope more common practice when they were elected.

And it became a custom, and only a handful of Popes held the name of the baptism, including Marcellus II and Adrian VI, who headed the church in the 16th century.

Each name is ingrained in its own history and meaning, linked to the achievements and failures of the previous Popes and saints who carried it.

“It’s not always possible to overcome the crisis, influence reform, or link to the names of previous popes that were incredibly popular, but often play a role in name choice,” Temple told CNN.

Pope Francis, for example, chose his Pope name to honor Saint Francis of Assisi with his love for peace and nature, caring for the poor and focused on cooperation between various denominations in the Church. These associations established the priorities of Francis’s Pope See.

His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, chose his Pope name to show his commitment to peace and reconciliation by honouring St. Benedict and Pope Benedict XV, who were the church presidents during World War I, Temple said.

One name that the new Pope will undoubtedly adopt is because of a prophecy that centuries ago would be the last pope to serve, from respecting the first Pope, the Apostle St. Peter.

There are other names that are not necessarily off limits, but are unlikely to be chosen for their relationship with the latest Pope who gave birth to them, Temple said.

He identifies the city’s name as a candidate for the new Pope because he “started the trial of Galileo Galilei and fails to sit well in modern discussions about science, faith and religion.”

Similarly, the name Pius would evoke the memories of Pius XII, whose role during World War II is increasingly criticised, Temple added.

If the new Pope wants to continue the path of reform, Temple said that names like Leo are innocent referring to Leo XIII, known for their dedication to social justice, fair wages and safe working conditions, or to innocent XIII, who attempted to eradicate corruption.

Like Pope Francis, a new Pope elected from the Global South may choose names adopted by the early non-Italian gates such as Gerasius, Miltiades, and Victor, who were welcomed from the African continent, Temple added.

For centuries, the names of 44 popes have been used only once. Recently, Pope Francis himself was named.

His decision to choose a unique name stated that “large historical influence” has been “about a century or 100 years since he was last named the unique Pope in the form of the Pope Rand, which lasted less than a year in the 10th century.”

John is the most popular name, and 21 Popes have chosen to adopt it. However, the last Pope to take that name was John XXIII after the historian accidentally inhabited the Pope after John XIII.

Gregory and Benedict are also popular pontyphical names with 16 and 15 uses, respectively. Meanwhile, Innocent and Leo are lagging behind with 13 use each. (There is a contradiction of Benedict’s numbering after that, as Benedict X was declared anti-pope and exiled from the Pope’s throne.)

After white smoke rises from the chimney of Sistine Chapel and the bell of St. Peter, the newly elected Pope’s name is conveyed to the world in a Latin declaration.

The Senior Cardinal, accompanied by two priests, steps into the central balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral, conveys the iconic announcement “Havem Spapam” (“We Have a Pope”).

The new Pope’s name and his baptismal name will be translated into Latin in the announcement, but his previous surname will remain in his native language.

For example, when Pope Francis was elected in 2013, the given name of “Jorge Mario” was distributed as “Giorgio Marium”, but his surname “Bergolio” remained the same.

His Pope’s name was published as “Francisco” and, as customarily, was the final word in the declaration.
