Russia claims to capture Chashivyar in eastern Ukraine

July 31 (Reuters) – Russia on Thursday said it had captured the town of Chashivyar in eastern Ukraine after nearly 16 months of fighting, opening up the possibility of further progress.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a brief statement that its forces “liberated” the town.

Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky dismissed the claim as “disinformation.” A spokesman for the Ukrainian military called it “propaganda.”

However, a video posted by Russian military forces and verified by Reuters showed the flag of Russia’s sky tro section and the national flag being raised by soldiers in the ruined ruins of the town.

Russia is slowly moving forward in eastern Ukraine. Talks to end the 3-1/2 year war are making progress towards a ceasefire, urging President Donald Trump to threaten new sanctions on Russia and its exports from next week.

Moscow’s troops are also putting strong pressure on Pokrovsk city, 60 km (37 miles) southwest of Chashiv Yah.

Military analyst Emil Kastehelmi, co-founder of Finland-based Blackbird Group, said the fight is likely to continue near Chasib Yar.

“Chashiv Yar’s terrain supports defenders. The stock of forested areas, waterways, hills and various buildings has allowed Ukraine to carry out a defensive operation that lasts for over a year.

Gradual advance

Kastehelmi said that if a town fall is confirmed, it is likely that Russia will create conditions for further advancement in eastern Ukraine, but still only gradually.

“Nevertheless, it is a challenging situation for Ukraine when the Russians fell to the enemy as they approach Kostiantinibka, who is now approaching from several directions,” he said.

“Logistics in the region will also be affected as Russians can bring their drone teams closer.”

Zelenskiy said at his nightly video address that Ukrainian units around Chasiv Yar “protect our position.

Zelensky said the most intensive battle was still close to Pokrovsk, citing a report from top Ukraine commander Oleksandr Silsky. He said Ukrainian forces are repelling Russian sabotages and scouts.

Deepstate, a popular Ukrainian blog that uses open source materials to track the movement of Russian military forces, also denied that Moscow’s troops dominate Chasiv Yar.

The Battle of Chasiv Yar began last April when Russian air troops reached the eastern edge. Russian state media reported that Russian soldiers began challenging their Ukrainian counterparts in the town to demand surrender or be wiped out by air-guided bombs.

The town, currently being destroyed, had a prewar population of over 12,000 people, and its economy was based on factories that produced reinforced concrete products and clay used in bricks.

It is just west of Bahmut, and Russia captured it in 2023 after one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Scientists happened to the Black Goo on the ship – and discovered it was full of life

0

The blue heron in the research vessel trawls the Great Lakes and collects data from the water. But the latest discoveries of the Floating Institute came from an unexpected place, its own rudder.

While docked after a long cruise to bloom algae at Lake Ellie and her boss in September, crews noticed a black tar-like substance oozing out from the shaft of the rudder. Doug Ricketts, Marine Chief and Senior Research Fellow of the Great Lake Observatory at the University of Minnesota Duluth University, brought a cup of material to scientists on the observation deck for testing, as he was unsure of what the strange goo was.

Scientists were surprised that the material was full of life forms, some of which were unknown microorganisms. Now, the mystical material, unofficially named “ShipGoo001,” appeared to thrive in an oxygen-free environment on the rudder shaft, according to a university announcement on June 27th.

“There’s no reason to expect any living creatures to be in this part of the ship,” Ricketts said, referring to the closed ladder shaft housing. “Certain parts of this ship don’t move much. It’s not exposed to other parts of the world.”

The crew noticed a strange goo after finishing the cruise.

If more goo is found, the goal is to collect it without disturbing the oxygen-free environment, said Cody Sheik, microbial ecologist at Lage Lakes Observatory. More careful research could lead to further discovery of new species of microorganisms, he added.

“One of the fun things about this is that it was so unexpected… all of these different things we make is to be the right (possible) new habitat for microorganisms,” Sheikh said. “It’s strange. I’m just not going outside and looking at something, what else am I missing?”

Some of the DNA extracted from Blackgoo was previously known to be from unknown microorganisms, but other genetic material in the samples has been observed worldwide. When researchers searched the global database, they found that they were associated with microorganisms from turbo-shaped substances in the Mediterranean, hydrocarbon contaminated sediments in Calgary, Alberta, and other samples from the California coast to Germany.

“It’s kind of an entire board in terms of what these environments are,” Sheikh said. “I think thinking more broadly about the other environments these organisms have found will give you a better idea of what these organisms can do.”

Scientists have discovered that materials are overflowing with life forms, including several unknown microorganisms.

Researchers have many unanswered questions about strange ingredients, such as how they became on board and whether they could eat or deteriorate the steel on the ship. Because the substance was in its own sealed environment, it requires a complex food web to thrive and maintain.

“(Biocorrosion) is one thing you have to worry about in oil pipelines and all other really important infrastructure locations. So there’s freshwater on some of these ships, especially those that have really lived in Lake Gou for many years.

Researchers hope to answer these questions in future research papers. This also includes the complete genome of Goo’s microorganisms so that other scientists can build on their own research, Sheik added.

Depending on what the researcher finds, the material has practical uses. According to a university’s announcement, methane-producing organisms within this material could potentially be used in biofuel production. For now, researchers are focusing on more material on the ship and other vessels, so additional samples can be collected and further tests can be performed.

Jeffrey Marlow, an assistant professor of biology at Boston University, said that there are so many up to 1 trillion microbial species in the world that it’s not particularly surprising to find something new. “It’s where they’re discovered and what their genome’s history and metabolic ability are. That’s what often makes new species particularly exciting,” he added in an email.

To confirm the origin of the material, Sheikh and his team are compiling the ship’s history as the old fishing boat was purchased nearly 30 years ago by the University of Minnesota, Duluth. The ship’s rudder is not intended to be lubricated with anything other than water, but it is possible that the previous owners have oiled the area and those creatures that have been dormant for years. Furthermore, no goo was present during the last inspection of the ship in November 2021.

This material thrived in the oxygen-free environment of the blue heron rudder shaft.

Marlowe, who was not involved in the discovery, assumed that riding on ocean snow could have soaked into the melted shaft. It is a deadly chunk of organic matter that sinks into the water column and traps oxygen-free pockets.

Shake is planning to explore the origins of Goo, noting that there are many scenarios to consider, whether the material grew on the shaft of the rudder, or whether it was somehow on a boat.

“One of the coolest parts of this story is the fact that the sample reached a microbiologist in the first place. It speaks to a “microbiologically literate” culture where some people had the consciousness and curiosity to ask what is alive and inconveniently surprising,” Marlow said. “I wonder if other attractive microorganisms live around us in the most unexpected places.”

As the hunger crisis deepens, US envoy Witkov visits Gaza Aid Distribution Site

0

Steve Witkoff, a special US envoy to the Middle East, visited Gaza’s controversial US aid aid streaming site on Friday. This is one of three places where hundreds of Palestinians have died in recent weeks as they attempted to reach rare food supplies.

An Israeli source told CNN on Friday morning that Witkov had arrived at the aid site in the southern city of Rafa, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

The GHF was created to replace the role of UN aid in Gaza and has been widely criticized for failing to improve conditions as the starcion crisis deepens. Hundreds of people have been killed near GHF sites while more than 1,000 Palestinians are trying to get food to Israeli forces. The GHF disputes this.

White House press chief Caroline Leavitt said Thursday that U.S. ambassador Witkov and Israeli Mike Huckabee will “securing plans to inspect current distribution sites, deliver more food and hear in person about this dire situation in the local area to meet with local Gazanians.”

Witkoff and Huckabee “will execute immediately after the president visits to approve a final plan for food and aid distribution to the region,” she said, adding that the White House will provide “after the plan is approved and agreed by the US President.”

Friday’s visit marks Witkov’s second trip to Gaza. Shortly after Trump took office in January, Witkoff visited the enclave and became the first such US official in over a decade.

A Hamas official has accused Witkov’s trip of being nothing more than a photo opportunity.

“Witkov, Gaza is not an animal farm that requires a gradual personal visit to take personal photos in front of a death trap supervised by American companies,” Gaza’s former Palestinian health minister Bassem Naim said in a statement shared with CNN. “The Gaza people are not a be-food group, they are free, proud and noble people. They only want freedom, independence and return to their homeland.”

The GHF was established in May after Israel accused the United Nations of reaching Hamas. However, internal US government reviews found no evidence of widespread theft by Hamas of US-funded humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

An analysis conducted by the United States Organization for International Development (USAID) examined 156 cases of waste, fraud and abuse reported by partner organizations between October 2023 and May 2025, according to a presentation seen by CNN.

US stock futures fall as Trump imposes new tariffs to clean

0

play

U.S. stock futures have fallen low after President Donald Trump signed an order to impose broad new tariffs on countries around the world ahead of his major monthly employment reports.

According to the Dow Jones survey of Economists, the employment report for July is scheduled for ET at 8:30am, indicating that the economy has added 100,000 jobs. Unemployment rates are up to 4.2% edge, up to 4.1% in June.

Tom Essaye, founder of Sevens Report Research, said employment reports like this would be considered a “just right” labor market. “It will further push back the growing tariff-related concerns, bring the Fed back on track to cut interest rates in September, and even invalidate the male dog story,” he said, and will also provide the stock with a reason to extend the recent rally.

Meanwhile, Trump has signed an executive order confirming “mutual” tariffs in dozens of countries with his latest operations ranging from seven days to 10% to 41%. He also said that they would switch transportation to avoid tariffs or that goods introduced would face an additional 40% tax.

Starting August 1, Canada will face a 35% tariff, excluding goods compliant with Canada-Mexico Agreement on Trade. That has been up from 25% previously.

The statement said countries not listed in the latest order will face an additional 10% obligation.

Previously, Trump said he was giving Mexico another 90 days to reach a long-term agreement with the US to avoid higher tariffs.

At 6:15am on ET, futures tied to the Blue Chip Dow fell by -0.95%, wide S&P 500 futures slipped -0.97%, and high-tech Nasdaq futures fell by -1.10%.

Corporate News

In addition, revenue continues to be important in determining the direction of the stock market. According to LSEG data and analysis, of the 297 S&P 500 companies that reported revenue through the morning of July 31, 80.8% exceeded analyst expectations.

After the market was shut down, Amazon and Apple (two so-called epic seven influential Mega Cap Tech stocks) reported the results.

Amazon surpassed Wall Street estimates in its second quarter results, but cloud computing growth was disappointing.

In contrast, Apple surpassed second quarter expectations, including its biggest revenue jump since 2021. Sales increased by over 13% in iPhone sales through tariff-related purchases and popular devices. The tariff costs were projected to reach $1.1 billion in the current quarter.

Of the seven non-existent strains,

  • Coinbase violated its second-quarter adjusted earnings per share, but earnings were insufficient.
  • Social media company Reddit’s second quarter results outperform Wall Street’s forecasts. The company said revenues rose 78% to $500 million, the fastest revenue growth rate in three years. It also provided bright third quarter guidance.
  • CloudFlare surpassed forecasts in its second quarter results, bringing full-year profit and revenue guidance.
  • First Solar reported second quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations and raised 2025 revenue guidance.
  • The Striker’s second quarter results were better than expected. Medical device manufacturers have also raised their annual revenue outlook.

Senators want to update their stockpiles after Houthi attacks

0

Concerns about US arms stocks rose in July after the Pentagon halted delivery to Ukraine for several weeks during a “ability review” to ensure sufficient weapons for the US needs.

play

WASHINGTON – Senators have moved to quickly restock their Pentagon ammunition stockpile, citing concerns that have been severely exhausted by the Trump administration’s two-month bombing campaign against the Ukrainian war and the Houtsis in Yemen.

The Senate Budget Committee voted 26-3 on July 31 to approve a version of next year’s Defense Policy Bill.

“Recent operations in the Middle East show how quickly modern wars can eliminate our critical ammunition arsenal,” said Sen. R-Kentucky, chairman of the committee.

Sen. Chris Koons, a top Democrat on the Defense Subcommittee, told reporters it was one of the main areas that lawmakers want to fund more than the Trump administration demanded.

“Recent experiences like the counterhouch campaign in the Red Sea, for example, show how quickly we pass advanced ammunition,” Coons said.

“Responding to supplying Ukraine was a challenge,” he added.

Concerns about US arms stocks arose in July after the Pentagon halted delivery to Ukraine for several weeks during a “ability review” to ensure sufficient weapons for the US needs. Some lawmakers should not justify blocking Ukrainian weapons.

The Pentagon continues to classify its ammunition stock. That initial budget request included $2.5 billion to expand missile and ammunition production, plus $1.3 billion in “supply chain improvements,” the Department of Defense said.

The department said in a statement that it “has robust air defense capabilities to protect the personnel and interests of Americans around the world.” “While we won’t be in stock due to operational security, we can tell you that the DOD (DOD) is continuing to take stance to respond to any threat.”

Houthi attacks were burned through ammunition

President Donald Trump’s bombing campaign against Yemeni Hooty extremists — called Operation Raf Rider — has dented US stockpiles.

Less than two months later, the Pentagon spent at least $500 million in surgery on weapons, according to US officials who were not permitted to speak publicly. Adding operational costs and losses on multiple aircraft, the bill is over $1 billion. He also attacked Houthi’s targets with some of the US military’s most sophisticated weapons, said an official who was not permitted to publicly speak.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, Senate aides said the operation was burned out with hundreds of millions of dollars of weapons.

The Department of Defense has not informed Congress how much the surgery cost, an aide said.

During the course of the surgery, two F/A-18E planes, each valued at around $60 million, accidentally fell out of the aircraft carrier and sank into the Red Sea. Reports say Houthis also defeated nine MQ-9 Reaper drones. These costs total $270 million.

Trump suddenly severed the operation on May 6th, with the Houchis insisting that “they won’t blow up the ship anymore.”

It’s not how the conflict unfolded. Houthis last week attacked and sank a Greek cargo ship and allegedly blamed the missile launched into Israel’s Jaffa.

The Iranian-supporting group repeatedly attacked commercial vessels destined for Israeli ports on July 27, repeatedly pressuring Israel to lift the blockade and siege of Gaza.

Senators have zero air defense

The Senate Budget Committee hopes for $5.2 billion to buy more of these weapons out of the $7.3 billion increase in funding.

The remaining $2.1 billion covers the costs of raising sophisticated air defense production lines. The main ones are eager to find patriots and air defense interceptors, including THAAD missile systems, who can take ballistic missiles.

Patriots are playing an increasingly important role for Ukraine as Russian missile and drone attacks have increased to the highest strength in wars over three years.

Trump said he would send his name to Ukraine on July 13, saying that he needed patriots. European allies have also offered to fund Ukrainian weapons systems. Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky said that on July 25th, when Germany pays two systems, Norway will pay one.

Israel uses THAAD batteries provided by the US to protect against Iranian missile volleys, including during the 12-day aviation war between the two countries in June.

Lindsay Lohan recreates “Freaky Friday”

0

“Freakier Friday” star Lindsay Lohan doesn’t just offer nostalgia on the silver screen.

The actress, nominated for critics’ choice, has made her roles synonymous with millennial pop culture, and has revisited some of her most iconic characters in “Freakier Fridain,” a sequel to “Freakier Fridain,” starring “Freakier Fridain,” starring in the 2003 body switch comedy Lohe Lee Curtis.

While attending the British premiere of the film in London on Thursday, July 31st, Lohan sparkled in a sequined lavender halter gown from Ludovic de Saint Sernin, which reflected the dress worn by Anna Coleman, the protagonist of “Freaky Friday” in the film’s closing scene. She completed the look with a guitar-shaped wallet, paying homage to the character’s musician background.

“London, you’re the ultimate!” I wrote Lohan on Instagram along with pictures of the nostalgic look, referring to the theme song “Ultimate” on the soundtrack.

Aside from her fashion respects, Lohan is reconnecting with the family who makes her films on a press tour. At the premiere of “Freakier Friday” in Los Angeles on July 22nd, Lohan took a photo with Lisa Ann Walter and Elaine Hendrix, starring with Lohan in his film debut, “The Parent Trap.”

“Freakier Friday” follows Tess (Curtis) and Anna Coleman’s mother-daughter duo, who endure another comical body switch with Anna’s daughter Harper (Julia Butter) and soon stepdaughter Lily Davis (Sophia Hammons).

Ahead of the August 8 release of Disney Flick, check out Rohan’s most nostalgic looks.

Lindsay Lohan becomes rocker chic with pink slip tribute

On “Freaky Friday,” Lohan’s character Anna serves as guitarist for the all-female rock band Anna Forms Forms Forms Forms Pink Slip.

On a July 28th outing at Madison Square Park in New York City, Lohan was spotted wearing a pink slip graphic T-shirt.

“The pink slip energy has become completely effective,” Lohan wrote in an Instagram post on July 26th.

Lindsay Lohan recreates the look of the “Freaky Friday” finale

One of the most memorable scenes in “Freaky Friday” involves Anna, who has struggled to accept Tess’s fiancé Ryan (Mark Harmon), but after switching places, she plays a musical number for her mother and new stepfather.

Guitarist Anna takes the central stage of her performance, wearing a lavender rap dress and sings the “ultimate” sweet pop rock banger of dedication to a newlywed couple.

The look of Loohan’s UK premier version enhances the wedding flock with elegant, sequin beading and silver halter collars.

Lindsay Lohan is a preppy princess with a homage to “parent trap”

Rohan, who starred as identical twins Annie James and Harry Parker in 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” paid tribute to British twin Annie in a preppy ensemble while in New York on July 28th.

The actress looked gorgeous wearing a yellow plaid tweed dress from Balmain, paired with Canary Jimmy Chew heels and a black Hermes bag. The outfit struck an undeniable similarity to the appearance Annie was wearing while she was leaving summer camp.

“Annie James Energy has a strange Friday twist,” Rohan wrote on Instagram.

Lindsay Lohan offers double doses of “parent trap” nostalgia

In true twin fashion, Lohan provided another “parent trap” homage during his July 28 appearance on “Live With Kelly and Mark.”

The actress wore a multicolored, short-sleeved dress by Roberto Cavalli, similar to the number of flowers that Harry and her sister Annie wear when they were about to reunite their divorced parents for a romantic dinner.

“A little sparkle, a little silk, a lot of love, and an inspo from Harry Parker,” Rohan wrote on Instagram.

Lindsay Lohan pays homage to Carrie Bradshaw-inspired look and “Sex and the City” glam

Lohan may not have hanged alongside Carrie Bradshaw in the late 90s, but the woman is a feathered bird in the fashion department.

The “Freakier Friday” star shot the page from a Bradshaw-style book at the film’s New York City premiere on July 28th. Rohan wore a white Jaque Mass dress featuring a disgusting tulle skirt, reminiscent of the “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress, which shows off her iconic tutu dress from “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker.

“Freakier Friday feels with the love of a small family and the nods of Carrie Bradshaw,” Lohan wrote on Instagram.

  • The US and Russia conducted their largest major prisoner swap since the Cold War on August 1, 2024.
  • Exchange Freed Freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva have won custody of Russia.
  • The complex negotiations involved the Biden administration, Russia and five other countries, with Turkey serving as a neutral place for swaps.

A year ago, Russia and the United States carried out the largest prisoner swap since the Cold War, releasing journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan from Russian custody.

The August 1, 2024 deal was the culmination of months of backdoor negotiations between former President Joe Biden’s administration, the Russian government, and five other countries’ governments, and has been one of the most important diplomatic operations between Russia and the West in decades.

In total, the historic swap included the release of 16 previously detained in Russia in exchange for eight people held in the US, Germany, Norway, Slovenia and Poland. Turkey was a neutral country where swaps took place.

Who was released from Russian custody in the swap?

More than dozens of people have been released from Russian prisons and labor camps. Some of them are Russian custody activists or prominent opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal also released five German citizens from Russian custody, three American citizens and one US resident.

The three Americans were Whelan, a former US Marine, Gershkovich, a journalist, and Ars Krumasheva, a Russian-American journalist.

The last famous prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States took place more than two years ago when American basketball player Britney Griner was swapped for the infamous Russian weapons dealer Victor match. He was held in American prisons for 12 years after being convicted of supporting terrorist groups conspired to kill Americans and supply anti-aircraft missiles. Griner was arrested in February 2022 after being sentenced to nine years in a drug smuggling prison, claiming that Russian customs officials had discovered a steam-covered cartridge containing oil derived from cannabis in their luggage.

Who is Paul Whelan?

Born in Canada and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Whelan worked as a police officer for over a decade before joining the US Marine Corps reserves. He was discontinued by the Marines after being found guilty in a special court battle that attempted to steal more than $10,000 at Al Assad Air Force Base in Iraq.

He was arrested during a visit to Russia in December 2018 and charged with spying that he and his family firmly denied. He was sentenced to 16 years of hard work at a work camp. At the time of his arrest, Whelan was head of global security at Borgwarner, a Michigan-based car supplier.

Who is Evan Gerschkovich?

Ghakovic, a US citizen of New Jersey, was detained in Russia in March 2023 and lived and worked in the country as one of the Moscow reporters for the Wall Street Journal. He was a former citizen of the Soviet Union and was certified by the Russian Foreign Ministry for his time as a domestic journalist.

His arrest came at a time when tensions between the West and Russia during the war grew a year after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. At the time, the Kremlin was cracking down on opposition activists, independent journalists and civil society groups, but USA Today reported earlier. By the time of his release he had been in custody in Russia for 17 months.

Who is Ars Krumacheva?

Kurmasheva is a Russian-American journalist and worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which was funded by the US during his detention.

She was detained in June 2023 while visiting Russia due to a family emergency for failing to register a US passport with Russian authorities. Authorities confiscated her US and Russian passports, preventing her from leaving, and then detaining her again in October 2023, denying her as a foreign agent. Kurmasheva and her employers have long denied the charges, called for detention and politically motivated charges. The major human rights and media watchdog organizations have called the arrests of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich and arrested some of the long-standing crackdowns on Russian independence and foreign media.

A few months later, Russian authorities began a third investigation into journalists to “spread false information” about the Russian military, convicted in July 2024.

Who is Vladimir Kara Muruza?

Former journalist and well-known opposition figure Kara Muruza was also part of the 2024 prisoner swap. Although he was born in Russia, he has double citizenship with the UK and is a US green card holder. He is a contribution columnist for the Washington Post.

Kara Muruza has been jailed on treason charges since 2022, spreading misinformation about the Russian army he rejected. In 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was poisoned twice in 2015 and 2017. Kara Muruza claimed that both were attempts to assassinate using the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok, putting him in a coma. The Kremlin denied involvement. According to his Washington Post Bio, media investigations by Bellingcat and insiders and the officials of the Russian Federal Security Agency who were behind the addiction have been identified.

FAA Army Grill in Potomac Airplane crash crash at investigative hearing

0

play

Air traffic management employees at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) are often forced to “make it work” with limited resources, federal aviation administration officials said on the second day of the National Transportation Safety Board hearing in the fatal January crash.

67 people were killed after an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines regional jet on January 29th over the Potomac River near Washington. It was the most fatal US aviation accident in decades.

The NTSB has begun investigating the tragedy. This includes a three-day investigative hearing held this week. Here are some major takeaways.

Takeout #1: FAA is said to have known the ongoing risks at DCA

Preliminary findings released shortly after the accident showed that the FAA was aware of ongoing risks at airports, particularly military aircraft, but the NTSB allegedly did not take action before crash.

Other issues with the DCA include airspace congestion and a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Following the tragedy, the FAA restricted the use of military helicopters along Route 1, a helicopter route on the Potomac River that passed in front of DCA’s runway 33.

Part of the Wednesday and Thursday hearings have focused in part on the role the Army and the FAA played on the night of the crash, with NTSB Chairman Jennifer Homendi telling FAA officials that he failed to act on warnings from air traffic control staff who previously proposed changes to flight paths to avoid the threat of a crash.

“There were signs that all the signs were a safety risk, and the tower was telling you,” the chairman said.

In a statement posted to X, Senate Speaker D-Washington, Chairman Maria Cantwell, who is the leader in the investigation into the case, said:

“What could have been the issue that could not be resolved before this tragedy occurred because FAA surveillance is so flawed?”

Takeout #2: “The Mentality that Makes It Work”

NTSB investigator Brian Soper asked the air traffic controller if “the mentality to make it work has been normalized at DCA airport.”

National Airport Operations Manager Clark Allen said he believes it has.

“There are limited real estate where the airports and planes are located. It’s very easy to back up,” Allen testified. “So, with a massive, high-multiple airport with lots of real estate, we have to keep things moving to provide safe and efficient services.”

Brian Lehman, the FAA’s frontline manager, said his tower now deals with a number of issues the DCA has, and performs “non-standard air traffic operations” every day.

“We take pride in that,” Lehman said. “But at some point, I say that it’s too much.”

Investigators also forced staff sales to be carried out. Allen said Wednesday that DCA Control Tower had around 10 air traffic observers since early 2013.

“Air traffic managers are responsible for considering all types of changes to routes, all types of changes, revisions, and annual route assessments,” Homedy replied. “You had 10 air traffic managers in a fairly small amount of time. You had five in the last five years and three in the last two years. How do you know that if you keep switching between air traffic managers?”

The victim’s family reacts

Many of the victims of the plane crash were children and their parents who returned from figure skating competitions in Wichita, Kansas.

Speaking to ABC affiliate WJLA, Aisha Duggins said her sister, Kia Duggins, had died in a crash.

El Salvador approves indefinite re-election of president and extends terms to six years

0

San Salvador, El Salvador
AP

El Salvador President Naibe Bukere approved the constitutional changes in the country’s legislative assembly on Thursday.

New Ideas Party MP Ana Figueroa had proposed changes to five articles in the Constitution. The proposal also included elimination of the second round of elections, in which two top voters in the first round, faced off.

The new ideas of the Legislative Assembly and their allies quickly approved the proposal with the vast majority they hold. The vote was passed by 57 people, with three opposed.

Bukkel won last year’s reelection by far, despite constitutional bans. A Supreme Court judge selected by his party has ruled in 2021 that he will be re-elected to be re-elected to a five-year term.

Observers worry that Bukele has plans to consolidate power when, at least in 2021, a newly elected assembly with a strong governing party majority votes to eliminate magistrates in the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Room. These justices were considered the last checks of popular presidents.

Since then, Bukel has only become more popular. The Biden administration’s first expression of concern replaced a quiet acceptance as Bukele announced his run for reelection. With President Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January, Bukere quickly offered Trump’s help by having a new, powerful alliance and taking over 200 other exiles from other countries to newly built prisons for gang members.

Figueroa claimed Thursday that federal lawmakers and mayors could already seek re-election multiple times.

“They all had the potential to be re-elected through the popular vote. The only exception to this day was the presidency,” Figueroa said.

She also proposed that Bukere’s current term, which is scheduled to end on June 1, 2029, would instead end on June 1, 2027, with the presidential and parliamentary elections being placed on the same schedule. Also, Bukere can seek re-election in the long term two years ago.

Rep. Marcela Villatorio is showing a poster reading

Marcela Viratoro of the Nationalist Republican Union (arena), one of the three votes on the proposal, told her fellow lawmakers, “The democracy in El Salvador has passed away!”

“You don’t understand what indefinite reelection brings. It brings about accumulation of power and weakens democracy… There’s corruption and clientism as nepotism stops and stops democracy and political participation,” she said.

“Power has returned to the only place it really belongs…back to the Salvadoran people,” said Sussy Kalejas, vice president of the parliament.

Bukel did not immediately comment.

Once dubbed “the coolest dictator in the world”, Bukel is extremely popular, mainly due to his strong fight against the country’s powerful street gang.

Voters are willing to overlook his administration like other administrations before negotiating with gangs before suspending their constitutional rights and seeking an emergency that allows authorities to arrest tens of thousands of people and jail.

Security and politically his success influenced local copycats who were trying to replicate his style.

Most recently, Bukel’s government has faced international criticism for the arrest of a well-known lawyer who was an outspoken critic of his administration. One of the nation’s most prominent human rights groups, announced in July, that it had shifted operations from El Salvador for the safety of its people, accusing the government of being a “wave of oppression.”

Live Update: Israel Gaza News. US envoys to visit aid sites amid the hunger starcion crisis

0

President Donald Trump’s envoy to Steve Witcoff in the Middle East has arrived at aid distribution site in Rafa, southern Gaza.

Yesterday, the White House announced a trip to Gaza by U.S. ambassador Witkov and Israeli Mike Huckabee.

Witkoff and Huckabee “will tell the president immediately after their visit and execute to approve the final plan for food and aid distribution to the community,” she said, adding that the White House will be “after that plan has been approved, agreed and agreed.”

This will be Witkov’s second trip to Gaza. Shortly after Trump took office, Witkoff visited the enclave and became the first US official to do it for over a decade.

Witkov met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem yesterday and accused Hamas of “malicious” negotiations a week after the US pulled back from Gaza’s ceasefire talks.

When will the next Powerball picture be?

The following drawings will take place on Saturday, August 2nd, just after 11pm ET.

How to play Powerball

To play Powerball you will need to buy a ticket for $2. This can be done in a variety of places, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and even grocery stores. In some states, Powerball tickets can be purchased online.

Once you have your ticket, you will need to select six numbers. Five of these are white balls with numbers 1 to 69. Red Powerball ranges from 1 to 26. People can also add “Power Play” for $1.

The “Power Play” multiplier can be multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x on the prize.

If you feel unlucky or want your computer to do your job, the “quick pick” option is available. Here, the computer-generated numbers are printed on the Powerball ticket. To win a jackpot, players must match all five white balls with any order and Red Powerball.

The Powerball painting takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturday nights. If no one wins the jackpot, the prize money will continue to be engraved.

The beer brand will also be holding a special New Year-style “beer drop” at Miller Light Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’m a fan over the age of 21, but I can’t reach any of the bars listed.

“The 50th anniversary is more than a milestone in Mirror Light. It’s a fan celebration and 50 years of enjoying mirror time together.”

The company began its 50th anniversary by releasing a limited edition gold can earlier this summer and announcing a partnership with Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernandez.

Where can I get free mirror lights on International Beer Day?

Free Miller Lite beers are served at 450 different US bars, find nearby participating locations, visit millerlite.com/find-celebration, enter the state and navigate the list.

International Beer Day Details

International Beer Day can start as far back as 2007, and was the brainchild of four friends who started the day as “a beer celebration and the people who serve it,” according to InternationalBeerday.com. According to the website, the celebrations take place every year on the first Friday of August.

International Beer Day is separate from National Beer Day, which is held annually in April to mark the first legal sale of alcohol since the ban began in 1920.

Trump brings push-ups, mile run tests for school kids

Runs a mile long on a school track.

Sit down until you touch your toes and reach.

Counting push-ups at the gym.

On July 31, President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to reestablish fitness tests for American public school teenage presidential candidates and Preteens presidential candidates, said White House press chief Karoline Leavitt.

Fitness tests require students to complete a variety of physical tasks ranging from abdominal exercises to pull-ups.

“Let America fit again!” Leavitt wrote in X’s post.

The President’s fitness tests have been part of American physical education classes since the time when President Dwight Eisenhower first began in 1956 in the 2012-2013 academic year. At that time, President Barack Obama replaced it with a program designed to focus on long-term student health rather than physical performance.

What do you say about Trump’s orders?

The executive order says the Trump administration is reintroducing tests in the country’s public schools due to the high rates of obesity and chronic illness in the United States. Trump has directed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to update the test.

The President also rebuilt the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, known as the Youth Fitness Council, created by Eisenhower in 1956.

Trump has directed the reestablished council to create a school-based program that “rewards excellence in physical education and develops standards for the President’s Fitness Award.”

“The order ensures that American youth have opportunities at the global, national, state and local levels that emphasize the importance of active lifestyles, good nutrition, American sports and military preparation,” the White House said in a statement to USA Today.

Why is the President’s fitness test gone?

The Obama administration has replaced the President’s Fitness Test with the President’s Youth Fitness Program, focusing on student fitness, from student performance to student overall health and student overall health.

“The programme will help students minimize comparisons between children and instead pursue personal fitness goals for lifelong health,” reads a previous description of the programme from the Department of Health and Human Services website.

Education Week, reported in 2012, said that “Paul Lottard, former CEO of the Society for Health and Physics Education, was conducted “to keep fitness in a positive mode.”

American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown also supported the change when it was implemented more than a decade ago, the news outlet reported.

“This assessment is a great way to assess the health impact of physical education programs in schools and allow for a standardized comparison of fitness levels for children across the country,” Brown said.

Biden says Trump is “trying to dismantle the constitution.”

0

Former President Joe Biden on Thursday accused President Donald Trump and his administration of “trying to dismantle the constitution.”

At the National Bar Association’s 100th Annual Awards Gala, Biden said the Trump White House is “doing its best” to pursue the nation’s core principles, saying “they have often done it with the help of Congress, which was made possible by the Supreme Court in the country.”

The speech reflected the theme of “the soul of the nation” in Biden’s 2020 and 2024 presidential elections.

“There are moments in our country’s life that are so harsh that they divide everything that has come before from everything. It is moments where we stand up to the harsh truths about ourselves, our institutions, our democracy itself,” Biden said in a speech on July 31. “We, in my view, are these moments in American history.”

The former president also swiped through the law firm that had dealt with the Trump administration and said he was “bent towards a bully.”

Biden, who accepted the association’s C. Francis Stradford Award, called on the room’s lawyers to protect the rule of law.

“It means taking a client who can’t write a big check but needs protection of basic fundamental rights. It means signing on to that simple thing that may attract the rage of people in power, but you know it’s right,” Biden said.

Biden and Obama contrast with Trump’s reaction

Biden’s remarks came more than a week after former President Barack Obama issued a statement in response to a charge of Trump’s treason and the AI-generated video posting of President 44th’s arrest.

The statement stemming from the spokesman called Trump’s comments “a ridiculous, weak attempt at distraction” from the ongoing controversy over the Trump administration’s handling of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s crime files.

Trump has his own share of criticism of Biden, both recently and in the past. In April, Trump blamed his predecessor on the poor economy, saying, “This is Biden’s stock market, not Trump’s stock,” adding, “We need to get rid of Biden’s Overhan.”

At a 2022 rally in Arizona, Trump said “Biden has completely humiliated our country.”

In a rare post-presidential public appearance on Thursday evening, Biden said the Trump administration’s “difficult truth” “sought to erase fairness, equality and justice itself.”

Biden’s remarks repeated his first post-president speech in April, accusing Trump of “taking hatch” to the Social Security Agency.

The bands of the “TRL” era that you can see now

The decade-long run of MTV’s “Total Request Live” has not only just been announcing the videos.

It is a way that collectively shaped a generation of music fans and is likely the last one.

He rushes to TV on weekday afternoons and is keen to hope that host Carson Daly will count down his smoothly produced lineup of music videos when parcels of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Eve, Eminem, Blink182, Destiny’s Child and Boys’ Band attract the attention of the internet and media.

The original execution from 1998 to 2008 was a bygone era of millennials, forcing the latest generation to embrace the disbandment of musical rituals.

But the nature of pop culture is cyclical, and those who were the furious hormones of the late 90s to mid-000s promoted the popularity of these artists are now heading towards middle-aged, with a family, career and an urge to look back.

It’s good that many artists are accustomed to major tours and residencies this summer.

Backstreet Boys

When they debuted, the Florida-based Quintet was billed as a cross between Brock’s new child and the Boys II man. But Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Aji McLean and Howie Drow created a new generation of boyband tsunami. Sleek pop anthems, distinctive personality and tuned dance moves draft the blueprint, followed by an equally huge, successful *nsync, with adornments and numbers like 98 degrees, LFO, BBMAK, B2K and more. The 90s enthusiasts, following the BSB, squeal this summer as their stubborn flocks squeal through visually arrested settlements in the Las Vegas realm.

Songs you listen to: “As long as you love me”, “I want it to be like that”, “Stop the game (with my heart”)

Tour date: Until August 24th

Jonas Brothers

The trio of Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas enjoy the love of the Disney Channel, and it appears to have been a lifetime before bringing the floppy hair charm to the 2007 British bandbust cover of “3000 Years” 2007. However, since returning to “happiness begins” in 2019, Jobross has “burn in” the charts, working with Dipro (“Solitary”), Marshmello (“You leave before you love me”), and Karol G (“X”). Next up is the “Greetings from Your Hometown” album, scheduled for release on August 8th, and the arena and amphitheater tours carry fans through Sonic’s evolution.

Songs you listen to: “3000 years”, “Sucker”, “Leave before you love me”

Tour date: Nov from August 10th. 14

lady gaga

When she roamed the scene in “Just Dance” in 2008, Lady Gaga was curious. Was she a Madonna from Augs? Was she a Cyndi Roper Acolite with an undeniable pipe that can be covered in her glamour style? After “PokerFace” and “Paparazzi” retained the charm of the first charts, was she a wonder of three hits? She’s a little bit unique to everyone, and her stardom solidified with the title track that became an inclusive hymn in 2011’s Born This Way. Titled to hint at a flashy festival on stage, the Mayhemball Tour follows 2022’s “Chromatica Ball” and offers the “Art Pop” queens another sharp playground.

It’s the most unlikely reunion on this side of Led Zeppelin, but Noel and Liam Gallagher have pulled it apart so far. The Mercury brothers broke up professionally in 2009 after years of public explosions that became predictable and a little troublesome in 2009, and Swagger returned unharmed on July 4th. Oasis, the most powerful monarch of the mid-90s zenith Britpop, is sometimes criticised for allowing chemical fuel tantrums to define celebrities, but The Beatles Shade Rock remains the best.

Nelly

In the midst of the boy band’s surge, a St. Louis liquid climber has arrived. St. Louis brought in his former crew member, the St. Lunatics, to top the charts with his 2000 debut album, Country Grammar. With his ubiquitous shades and frequently naked torso, Nelly was a cool character who covered MTV and Top 40 radio with his pop-rap singer “EI”, “Ride Wit Me”, and groundbreaking title tracks of his debut album. When his club banger “Hot in Herre” arrived in 2002, Nelly’s mainstream rap brand was so trendy that he won the first ever Grammy Award for Male Rap Solo Performance.

Songs you listen to: “HERRE IN HERRE”, “Country Grammar”, “Ride Wit Me”

Tour date: July 23rd – September 19th

Katy Perry

Her 2008 major label debut, “Boys of the Boys,” undoubtedly transformed Katy Perry’s career from modern Christian roots to “I Kissed a Girl.” Its debut also boasted “Wake Up in Vegas” and “Hot N Cold.” This allowed me to experiment acoustically with follow-up with Teenage Dream two years later. Snoop Dogg’s lavish collection of California Gurls, Last Friday Night (TGIF) and Firework have landed albums selling Perry and cemented its position as a pop queen who can stitch together harmless headbands with cat ears.

Songs you listen to: “California Girls,” “Teen Dreams,” “I Kissed a Girl.”

The US rejection

With their debut single “Swing,” swing, platinum and self-titled 2002 debut album, Tyson Ritter Front Group gained popularity with their undercurrents of cynical pop rock. They danced the charts for six solid years with their albums Move Athon and When the World Come Down. This year, when learning about a comeback would require innovation in complex, fragmented musical landscapes, the band began to perform free “house party” concerts with barns, bowling alleys, backyards and social media fans. They’re back to the bigger stage of opening this summer for the Jonas brothers.

Songs you listen to: “Dirty little secrets”, “Swing, swing”, “Give Hell”

Tour date: Nov from August 10th. 14

The 90s juggernaut of the faceless altrock post grunge band – mud, nickel back, stain and candlebox paddles produced the kind of light corn that was previously reserved for disco and hair metal. Creed appeared to be the heaviest antipathy, with a passionate voice and a serious Scott Stap in sculpted peck standing in front of him (unfair or not). However, the band was proven in 2024 with a summer tour that violated industry expectations with 60 sold-out amphitheater and arena shows. This summer, their well-earned victory laps make sure nostalgia hits hard.

Songs you listen to: “My own prison”, “My arms are wide open”, “High”

Tour date: Until August 30th

Linkin Park

By the “final” era, the fourth single of the band’s 2000 debut, “Hybrid Theory,” became the top ten smash worldwide, a band from Agoura Hills, California. Their electronic rock, metal and rap Mishmash were angry and thoughtful, but it was the unleashed vocals of frontman Chester Bennington who conveyed the uncertainty of the generation. Linkin Park took a break after Bennington died of suicide in 2017, but in 2024 singer Emily Armstrong joined co-founders Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson. The band’s “From Zero” album and hit single “The Emphiness Machine” meant their return with Rumble.

Why Amazon Advertising is the most profitable business ever

0

Amazon is building the next $100 billion business:

play

For years, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) The story focuses on e-commerce and cloud computing. But another engine is speeding up. It’s a high margin, rapidly growing, and still underrated engine. That’s an ad on Amazon.

What makes this business so powerful is its strategic position at the intersection of intention, data and trading. When Prime Video turns on ads, Amazon is unlocking a powerful new tier of monetization.

This new business is more than just an additional revenue stream. It is a strategic opportunity and could significantly change Amazon’s long-term outlook.

Why ads make perfect sense for Amazon

Founded as an online bookstore, Amazon has evolved into a large conglomerate with multiple business engines. One of the most promising of these businesses is Amazon Advertising.

Advertising has strategic implications for Amazon. This is because the company is taking advantage of what it is already doing its best. In other words, it captures intentions and translates them into actions. This creates rare, central digital real estate where brands are eager to pay. Amazon doesn’t need to build new traffic sources or create new content. It just monetizes what’s already happening on the platform.

What’s more, what sets Amazon apart is its closed loop attribution. Marketing speaks to track every part of a customer’s experience with advertising. It’s not just about showing ads. It sees what to convert, up to the product, basket size, and repetition frequency. This makes advertising platforms the most efficient in the world.

So at the heart of Amazon’s advertising model is the ability to monetize consumer intent using a vast amount of shopping, search and behavioral data. This is part of a wider retail media trend that helps retailers use first-party data to help brands target customers more effectively than traditional platforms. Amazon’s scale and data make you one of the most powerful players in this field.

Amazon Ads by Numbers

Amazon’s advertising division is more than just a side hustle. It is becoming an important factor in revenue growth.

In 2024, Amazon generated $56 billion in advertising revenue, up 18% from the previous year. This makes it the third largest digital advertising company in the world, after only Alphabet’s Google and Meta platforms. Momentum continued in the first quarter of 2025, with Amazon Ads generating $13.9 billion, up nearly 18% year-on-year, while the company’s total revenues rose just 9%. The gap highlights how ads grow faster than Amazon’s traditional business.

Amazon doesn’t make advertising profitable, but this business has a higher operating margin than its e-commerce or logistics business. In other words, advertising gradually increases our operating profit margin over the long term.

Looking ahead, the marketing consultant WARC project is projecting that Amazon’s retail media advertising revenues exceed $67 billion this year, potentially reaching $79 billion by 2026. If Amazon ads can maintain this momentum, it won’t take long for the ads to end $100 billion work.

Amazon ads will appear here

Amazon’s advertising business may already be quite impressive, but it is in the early stages of development.

The bedrock of Amazon Ads consists of sponsored ads related to high-purpose shopping behaviors. As long as the e-commerce business continues to grow, so will our advertising business. However, Amazon has expanded beyond its ecommerce product page to other parts of its ecosystem.

One of the key growth drivers is streaming. In 2024, Amazon introduced ads to Prime Video, giving immediate access to over 200 million viewers worldwide. The Bank of America project believes Prime Video can generate $3.5 billion to $5 billion in advertising revenue in 2025. Combining it with Twitch, Fire TV and Live Sports, Amazon can build one of the most valuable connected TV ad platforms on the market.

But Amazon hasn’t stopped there. The new Retail Advertising Services Initiative opens advertising technology to other retailers and turns internal tools into Software as a Service (SAAS) business. This is similar to how you can extend your internal cloud computing expertise to external users and build large-scale Amazon Web Services (AWS).

In other words, as more ad formats unfold and more advertisers take part, Amazon’s ad flywheel will continue to spin, creating a comprehensive advertising ecosystem that covers every part of the consumer’s journey.

What does this mean for investors?

Amazon may be best known for its e-commerce and cloud computing business, but its advertising business is quickly becoming a major force. If momentum continues, ADS could become one of Amazon’s most valuable profit engines.

If you are a long-term investor, this is a business segment worth paying attention to as it will affect your decisions about Amazon.

White House announces $200 million ballroom with latest Trump changes

0

The White House East Wing will be “modernized” as part of the project, with aides to First Lady Melania Trump moving temporarily.

play

WASHINGTON – The White House is scheduled to begin construction in September in a $200 million ballroom in the eastern part of the mansion where President Donald Trump vowed to pay with his own money and private donations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the new “bornly designed and carefully crafted” ballroom for the 90,000-square-foot ballroom will be a “very necessary and exquisite addition” to host a major event at the White House complex.

The Ballroom, which the White House will be completed before Trump’s term ends in 2029, will accommodate 650 people around 200 more than the White House East Room, where the president has historically had a large reception. Trump frequently complains that the White House doesn’t have a large ballroom suitable for entertainment.

“President Trump and other donors have generously committed to donating the funds needed to build this $200 million structure,” Levitt said at a July 31 briefing with reporters.

Leavitt did not name the donors at a media briefing, nor did he list them in accompanying statements from the White House. USA Today contacted the White House to clarify whether the donor list was released Thursday evening and did not receive an immediate response.

Leavitt said the White House East Wing will be “modernized” as part of the project, with East Wing staff, including first lady Melania Trump’s aide, will be relocating temporarily. The East Wing, built in 1902, has been modified several times and renovated several times, and in 1942 the two-storey added, Leavitt said.

Leavitt said the ballroom would be “virtually separated” from the White House main building, but “its theme and architectural heritage are roughly the same.”

The White House has released a handful of renders showing the interior of the ballroom with white and gold walls and gold walls and trimmed, while the large windows inhale natural light.

The massive overhaul comes when Trump promoted some cosmetic changes in the White House and transformed it into a stone patio, including ongoing renovations to Rose Garden. New gold embroidery throughout the oval office. And two rising flag poles on the grass in the north and south.

“President Trump is a builder of the heart and has an extraordinary eye for details,” White House Chief of Staff Susie Wills said in a statement. “The President and Trump White House are fully committed to working with the right organizations to maintain the special history of the White House, while building a beautiful ballroom for future administrations and generations of Americans to come.”

The government has contracted the construction of Clark to oversee the project, and oversees Washington-based McClelly Architect as lead architect.

“I was supposed to be with him”: Ukrainian mother explains the fear of losing her 10 years old in a Russian airstrike

0

Kramatorsk

If the war kills many people over the years, the names of the dead can bleed onto faceless lists.

But each loss still burns black holes in the world they left behind. And there are fewer than Tymur Hryhorenko.

Most of the bald facts of his death are horribly inconspicuous after three years of Russian artillery fire. He was the only death at 4:40am on the site in a Russian airstrike that hit a top floor apartment in the frontline town of Kramatrataak on July 22nd.

However, one of the most recent children who died in Russia’s war with Ukraine, Timur (10), lost his father in the war two years ago, demanding that he visit Kramatorsk’s grandmother. He was only nine hours away from the relative safety of Kiev, after boarding the train with his mother Nastia.

A video posted by Donetsk Emergency Services shows Tymur’s limp, bloody body. His mother had left him with her grandmother that night, but rushed to the scene.

“Like a breath of new hope,” she said, “One of the soldiers came out and said he had a pulse and they were reviving him. And while they pumped his chest, I prayed to God to give him life. But no miracles happened.”

Timur Hlikhorenko was killed in an airstrike in an apartment building on Ukraine's Kuramaturk Island on July 22nd.
After the strike, the toys remained overturned on the roof of the apartment building.

She said she couldn’t go to the apartment to see his body and felt the worst had happened when her sister rang an hour ago. She called immediately, but was soon back. “She said, ‘They took Mama away, and they’re looking for Tymur under the roof rub.” From that moment on, I felt like I was in a dream. ”

Nastia sat alone on the bench outside her sister’s apartment, in Kreima Talk’s apartment, losing and wet. Taimur was her only child. And his father, Ebhen, died in May 2023, fighting against Russians other than Lyman, despite her separation. She shares a video of Tymur and Evhen playing in bed. Evenen throws his son in and while his father’s skills seem carefree, he becomes extremely careful. Almost a year ago, she remarried, but her second husband died six months later from a heart attack.

She accuses her of not being in her mother’s spare room with her son Taimur when the bomb strikes. “At that moment, I was not home,” she cried. “I don’t know why, how, how the power took me out of it. But I should have been with him, and I blame myself very much for that.”

Timur had insisted that they would go and see his grandmother. However, Nastia insisted that she would leave by train to Kiev the next day. “He said he wanted to stay. I said, ‘No, we’ll go, we’ll definitely go.’ ”

Tymur Hryhorenko's mother, Nastya, was not in the apartment when the airstrike was hit.

The scene of his death is typical of the eastern town where Ukrainian troops live among locals, with Russian bombs rejecting discrimination and suffering every night. An elderly woman grooming plants in the courtyard tweets how the town’s army is targeted. Another neighbor clears up the broken glass from the stairs, still stained with Timur’s blood. On the roof, the child’s plastic toy is trapped under the felt with a roof facing upwards. Three generations of Nastia’s family live in her mother’s apartment, and at the time of her grandchild’s visit, the children’s toys were stacked in plastic bags.

She remembers their final moments together, the evening before he died. “We got hooked. Giving him a massage when he was a child showed how he was giving him a massage.

She shows a video of a growing boy enjoying a McDonald’s milkshake in “friend” hoodie. Taimur reads a poem about his birthday and family values. It is his small virtue, even at his age, that Nastia clings to the heart most.

Tomb of Tymur Hryhorenko in Kramatorsk.

“He loved all the animals and children,” she said. “In the Kiev house he is waiting for two pet mice. He loved them like crazy. He called me and said, “Mom, have you cleaned the cage? Did you feed them? Do they have water?”

His teacher praised him for standing up when a girl in his class was chosen. “He’s very considerate,” she said. “A very cheerful boy, very much.”

In June, UNICEF reported that more than 2,700 children were killed or injured in the war in Ukraine.

Timur is located on the outskirts of town, on a hill of fresh tombs, on which he is a chalk stone covered in flowers. The cemetery has a new hole, just dug, and accepting the town’s losses is never finished. The skyline occasionally rattles with blasts, birds scattered and gets in the way of air raid sirens.

Trump Plan eases computerized health records sharing

0

play

President Donald Trump and his top health officials are pursuing new initiatives that will allow people to share their health and medical records with doctors and hospitals.

Technology Giants Apple, Amazon, Google, Open AI, Health Industries Companies UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health are among over 60 companies that agree to develop standards for sharing health information across computer systems.

Trump touted the idea of eliminating redundancy, including filling out paperwork in multiple healthcare provider offices.

“This allows patients to easily send information from one doctor to another,” Trump said at a July 30 briefing with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of the Health and Human Services Administration and Mehmet Oz Center, Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator.

Trump emphasized that the initiative is voluntary and requires patients to opt in. He added that there will be no centralized government-run database that will store personal records of patients.

“People are very concerned about their personal records,” Trump said. “That’s their choice…it’s definitely going to be quiet.”

The large hospital system and some doctors allow patients to share their health information, fill out forms and schedule appointments through their website and mobile apps. And health technology companies have developed apps that allow people to track their health information, but these apps often have no access to medical records from healthcare providers, said Amy Gleason, representative administrator for the government’s Department of Efficiency or DOGE.

According to the Trump administration, companies that run 21 networks have agreed to an “interoperability framework” to meet the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Standards. According to the CMS, the hospital system and electronic health records vendors have agreed to cooperate with the effort.

Participating apps can help you manage obesity and diabetes, such as using AI assistants to check symptoms and schedule appointments, CMS said.

Privacy and data security remain the best concern

Chris Pearson, CEO of Black Cloak, a cybersecurity company based in Orlando, Florida, said the healthcare industry and tech companies have been trying to reduce paperwork and share electronic health records seamlessly for 30 years.

Hospitals, physicians, labs and vendors who directly process these sensitive medical records are subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or the federal privacy laws known as the HIPAA.

To make health information and records more portable and accessible, Pearson said, consumers need to ensure strong privacy protections and control over the information they share.

Consumers may be willing to share sensitive information with doctors, hospitals, or labs. However, it is best to block the app from sharing records with third parties such as exercise equipment vendors and dietary supplement retailers.

Pearson said such apps still need to comply with HIPAA and other federal and state laws. Considering the app is optional and requires consent, it will likely comply with privacy laws, Pearson said.

Companies need to secure information technology to protect sensitive information from data breaches.

Hackers target health records

Digital medical records are a popular target for hackers seeking sensitive health information, bank records, and identifiable information about a person, such as date of birth and social security numbers.

The number of attacks has skyrocketed in recent years, and is often carried out by organized hackers operating overseas.

HHS investigates whether violations involve violations of the Health Information Privacy and Security Act and publicly reports attacks affecting more than 500 on its website.

In July alone, HHS records show that data breaches of more than 20 people have damaged records of over 3 million people.

The biggest hacks in recent years included an attack on the change healthcare of United-owned subsidiary in February 2024. The attack disrupts the healthcare industry as doctors and hospitals were unable to collect payments for weeks when computer systems went down.

The Pentagon has withdrawn more than a thousand National Guard troops sent to Los Angeles, further expanding President Donald Trump’s controversial development.

On July 30, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses recalled 1,350 California national security guards assigned to protect federal buildings and staff amid the public turmoil following the recent immigration and customs enforcement raids in the city and Southern California.

The military’s withdrawal remains about a week in what the White House described as a 60-day development that began on June 7th.

The Pentagon said about 250 units will remain in Los Angeles to protect personnel and property. At the peak of the deployment, nearly 5,000 service members were sent to the area. Most were National Guard forces, but Trump sent 700 Marines to protect federal property in the city.

The military was instructed to curb the protest and protect ice agents carrying out migrant raids.

Newsom: Trump’s “Political Theatre Backfired”

Several California Democrats criticized the development in June, calling it an overreach of presidential authorities and accusing Trump of inciting violence. Trump’s response at the time was that “Los Angeles will be on fire right now” without military presence.

Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration, claiming the development was illegal. The San Francisco Court of Appeals ruled that the military could remain.

Newsom said in a post by X on July 30 that Trump’s “a chaotic and unnecessary takeover of the California National Guard, his political theatre in Los Angeles exploded in his face.”

“President Trump has noticed that his political theatre is backfiring. This militarization has always been unnecessary and has been deeply unpopular,” Newsom said in a statement.

Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass also considered the deployment a “political stunt” and in a July 30 post from X, he said the withdrawal was a “winner.” Bass said he will continue to put pressure on the administration until “all troops leave LA.”

Hegseth responded to Bass with his own X-post.

“We are welcomed mayors. These brave forces are redeploying because their mission was so successful. We should be grateful for saving your city from the mob and chaos,” Hegses said. “We will continue to support law enforcement.

The deployment of the military is estimated to cost around $134 million, according to the Pentagon.
