Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook fired by President Trump

0

play

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump took the unprecedented action on August 25th, firing Lisa Cook, the first African-American woman to work as Federal Reserve Governor over allegations of mortgage borrowing fraud.

The president was calling for Cook to step down on August 20 after Trump-appointed director of the US Federal Housing and Finance Agency, William Prute, of claiming her two mortgages as primary residences. The Justice Department said it is investigating the issue.

“I have determined that there is enough cause to remove you from your position,” Trump said in a culinary letter posted on his true social platform. Trump said there was ample evidence that Cook made false statements about his mortgage application.

“At the very least, the act in question shows a kind of gross negligence in a financial transaction that challenges your ability and reliability as a financial regulator,” he said.

Cook was rebelling against moving forward with the Fed.

“I’m not going to be bullied to step down from my position due to some of the questions raised in the tweet,” she said on August 20.

Cook, who was appointed to the federal board by former President Joe Biden in 2022, took away the mortgage in question in 2021 when she was an academic. The official financial disclosure form for 2024 lists three mortgages held by Cook, two listed as private homes.

Pulte claims that Cook committed mortgage fraud by listing two mortgages as major residences, but he does not provide any official evidence to support his allegations. Loans in major residences can carry lower borrowing rates.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV on August 21, Pulte said Cook’s alleged fraud was “trivial” and could be easily seen in published documents. Palt also said the issue came to light not through a political witch hunt against those who opposed the Trump administration, but as part of a regular investigation.

Pulte’s claims to Cook coincided with the Trump administration’s broad efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the US government, a process that led to the departure of several prominent women and minorities.

The Trump administration has also targeted other political opponents, including US Sen. Adam Schiff, and is receiving similar accusations of mortgage fraud.

Pressure Campaign

The layoffs of the chef marked an escalation of Trump’s attempts to restructure the structure of the Fed’s leadership ranks. He has put pressure on central banks to aggressively cut interest rates as Fed officials stabilized them amid ongoing concerns about inflation.

The president regularly threatens to fire Trump-appointed Chairman Jerome Powell, who was appointed by Trump during his first term in the White House and later appointed by Biden for a second term. Lacking legal authority to fire the Fed’s chairman except for “Because of a Cause,” Trump has retreated from the threat as Powell approaches the expiration of his term as Fed chief in May next year.

Cook’s exit from the Fed – she served during an expired period in 2038 – was able to speed up the Fed’s restructuring.

He is believed to be considering Governor Michelle Bowman recently to the central bank’s top bank regulator and Governor Christopher Waller, who was appointed to the board in 2020.

The appointments of two other Biden on the Fed Committee leave some time on their terms, but Powell was able to remain governor until 2028 after his term as head of the central bank.

In recent years, fiscal issues have been a regular issue for US Central Bank employees. In 2021, then-chairmen of Dallas and Boston banks both resigned after revelation of aggressive trading in financial markets.

Both were later cleared by an internal watchdog of the Fed’s fraud, but even so, central bank inspectors said their transactions had created the emergence of conflicts of interest. In response to the controversy, the Fed has strengthened ethical rules governing private investments in officials.

Trump says the Department of Defense should be the War Bureau

President Donald Trump has sidelined concerns that Congress is not in line with his plans. “We’re going to do that,” he said.

play

Is the best defense a good attack? That’s what President Donald Trump thinks.

Twice on August 25th, Trump brought up the previously stated intentions, bringing up the intention to rename the Department of Defense as what was once called – the Department of War.

He also sidelined concerns that Congress was not in line with his plans.

“We’re just trying to do that,” he told a reporter in the oval office. He was asked whether such changes would require Congressional actions. “I’m sure if we need it, Congress will go with us. I don’t think we need it.”

Earlier in the day during an event in the oval office, he presented the rationale for the idea.

“It used to be called the Ministry of War, but there was a stronger sound,” he said. “And as you know, we won World War I, we won World War II. We won everything.”

Before he nurtured his second topic on Monday, he just finished speaking what he described in June as a “surprising” and “perfect” US military operation to attack three nuclear sites using B-2 stealth bombers.

“Defensive is too defensive. We want to be defensive, but we want to be offensive too,” he said. “It seems more appropriate.”

When the First Congress met in 1789, it created three divisions to support the President: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (now the Ministry of State), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry (now the Ministry of Defense).

In 1798, Congress established another Navy Department. Following World War II, the 1947 National Security Act fused the armed and naval divisions and jointly established a new air force known as the National Military Facilities.

In 1949, the NME was renamed the Department of Defense to better reflect the military’s civilian leaders and the department’s mission to block and protect the country’s security.

Sinaloa Cartel boss El Mayo Zambada pleads guilty to the role of fentanyl

0

The guilty plea curbs the stunning reversal of Ismael “Elmailo” Zambada’s good fortune.

play

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder and leader of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, pleaded guilty on August 25th to US drug trafficking charges.

The Brooklyn, New York plea holds back a spectacular turnaround in Zambada’s fortune, what has been considered the world’s largest and deadly syndicate of organized crime for decades, even if his co-founder, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, made all the principals.

Zambada’s judicial agreement, which settles cases against him in numerous US jurisdictions, includes a contract that confiscates $15 billion in illegal profits, according to the US attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York.

Specifically, Zambada pleaded guilty to charges of continuing criminal enterprises, the Sinaloa Cartel, and Lattearter in charge of the affected corrupt organization (RICO) in front of Judge Briankogan.

“Zambada Garcia is now responsible for many illegal drugs, including cocaine and fentanyl, which he and his organization have trafficked for decades, as well as the murders committed in promoting the corporation,” said a lawyer for the Eastern District of New York Nosera.

Under Zambada’s leadership, the Sinaloa Cartel “made billions of dollars by importing toxic drugs into the United States and flooding the streets with cocaine, heroin and fentanyl,” said Assistant Attorney Matthew Galeotti.

Zambada, who the Justice Department said is 75, had previously pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from his role in leading the Sinaloa cartel.

He was arrested in New Mexico in July 2024 along with one of Guzman’s sons after the plane landed just above the Mexican border. His arrest and surrounding circumstances thrust the organization into a period of bloody war between rival facts.

Zambada’s lawyer Frank Perez told USA Today at the time that Guzman Lopez had lured Zambada to the US and flew him to the US against his will. Guzman’s representative denied this.

Perez did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Guzman, who was arrested for the third time in 2016 and later convicted in New York, has been sentenced to life in Colorado’s largest security prison.

On August 14, Mexico sent over 20 cartel members to the United States amid pressure from Mexican President Donald Trump to dismantle the Sinaloa cartel and other powerful drug organizations.

House committees want Epstein’s “Birthday Book.”

President Donald Trump said he made it for Jeffrey Epstein after sueing the Wall Street Journal.

play

The House Committee hopes for a copy of Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book, which is reportedly containing a ribbed message from President Donald Trump.

The House Oversight Committee is summoning the real estate of the late filing company to explore the mismanagement of a federal investigation involving Epstein and his ex-girlfriend Githraine Maxwell.

The subpoena signed by Rep. James Kommer, Republican Chairman of the Oversight Committee on August 25th, can constitute “potential clients,” including Epstein’s will, the disclosure agreement he signed, a non-proposed agreement he signed with a Southern Florida civil service in 2007, his financial transactions and holdings, and “potential clients.”

“We understand that Jeffrey Epstein’s property is under the custody and control of unauthorized documents that could promote the committee’s investigation and legislative goals,” Kommer wrote in a letter to an attorney overseeing Epstein’s property. “We also understand that the property is ready and ready to provide these documents to the committee in accordance with the subpoena.

The first entry Subpoena will provide to Congress is “all entries included in the reported leather-bound book edited by Gislane Maxwell for Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday.” Trump denied a Wall Street Journal report that he provided handwritten notes to the book and sued the publication.

The committee “considers the possibility of mismanagement of Jeffrey Epstein and Gislaine Maxwell’s federal investigations, the circumstances and subsequent investigations of Epstein’s death, the operation of the sex trafficking ring, the ways in which the federal government can fight effectively, and the potential violations of the ethical rules relating to civil servants.”

Subpoena arrives after the release of the Maxwell Marathon interview

The subpoena comes after the Justice Department delivered the first batch of Epstein documents to the committee on August 22nd. Legal requests also came after DOJ released a transcript of an interview with Associate Attorney General Todd Blanche in Tallahassee, Florida last month. Maxwell spoke about meeting Trump and his relationship with Epstein and former President Bill Clinton.

The Trump administration faces heavy criticism from Republicans and Democrats as it rejected previously rejecting the investigation records it has held in connection with the lawsuit.

Epstein died of suicide in a federal prison in New York in 2019, awaiting federal charges related to sex trafficking, but sparked anger and theory about who else knew or was involved in the sex ring that allegedly ran with Maxwell’s support. Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Trump fights to write a message to Epstein

Trump refused to write an off-color message to Epstein in the book, suing the Wall Street Journal after the outlet reported his birthday greeting. Trump is seeking $10 billion in damages in a lawsuit filed in Miami federal court on July 18th. He named Dow Jones & Company, News Corporation, owner Rupert Murdoch and two journal reporters in the lawsuit.

Under the issue is a story published on July 17th, describing a letter from Trump that the journal, written in 2003, is part of a leather-bound birthday book containing dozens of other letters presented to Epstein. According to the Journal, Trump’s letter ends with “Happy Birthday – and Great Secrets of Everyday.”

According to the journal, Trump’s signature, written in the form of text within the hand-drawn outline of a naked woman, is “a wavy “Donald” under the waist, mimicking pubic hair.”

The president called the letter “fake” in a social media post after the article was published, calling the letter “fake” and described the story as “false, malicious and defamatory.”

Epstein was worth millions at the time of his death. Epstein owned property in New York, Palm Beach, Florida, and the Caribbean, but how he accumulated his property remains unknown. His fortune paid Epstein’s victims a village worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

His estate will need to prepare the information requested by the Oversight Board until September 8th.

Kentucky will become the US Ev Capital after an automatic $13 billion overhaul

0

play

  • Since 2020, Kentucky has attracted more than $13.1 billion in electric vehicle (EV)-related investments.
  • Ford is investing $2 billion in its Louisville assembly plant to produce new electric trucks and create a universal EV platform.
  • Blueoval SK, a joint venture between Ford and SK On, has begun full production at Kentucky Battery Park.

For the past five years, Kentucky has emerged as the “US EV capital.”

Efforts to manufacture electric vehicles, battery making, and bring other parts of the EV supply chain to the Commonwealth have been the cornerstones of Governor Andy Besher’s two terms of office.

Since 2020, the state has seen more than $13.1 billion in EV-related investments, bringing many promised jobs, Beshear said on August 11.

More recently, Ford Motor Co. announced a $2 billion investment in the Louisville assembly plant, creating a new universal EV platform for assembly, bringing in a new four-door medium truck EV, securing 2,200 hourly jobs at the factory, reported by a part of the USA Today Network.

“Together, Kentucky and Ford are bringing the future of the EV industry to this world,” Besher said.

And it’s not just Ford is taking part in the federal burgeoning EV industry. See other major EV projects throughout the state and where they stand.

Rising factor

The battery material maker’s promotional factors have invested millions of dollars from the federal government to produce battery materials and new batteries for electric vehicles, reported in 2022.

Since then, the company has reduced plans for the Hopkinsville plant and canceled a $164 million federal grant for cathode active material production, whilst maintaining a larger grant for cathode precursor production, the Courier Journal previously reported.

EV battery companies face legal disputes from contractors over the project due to payment issues. The company is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026.

Fordruivil assembly factory

Ford’s $2 billion $800 million announcement is the first time in rap history, and the first time a factory has produced an electric vehicle. This is a medium-sized, four-door EV pickup truck with a starting price of $30,000 for consumers in 2027.

Ford said the market-to-market trucks are “as fast as Mustang Eco Boost” at accelerating between 0 and 60 mph, with more passenger space than their competitor Toyota RAV4. Like many EVs, the truck has a “frank” or front trunk and has a truck bed.

In addition to producing new EV trucks, Ford has announced that the wrap will be home to the latest iteration of the assembly line called the “assembly tree.”

Additionally, Ford is making his debut in LAP and creating a new universal EV platform that will allow the production and expansion of families of “affordable” vehicles to meet customer demand.

Ford, SK On: Blueoval SK Battery Park

The nearly $6 billion joint venture EV battery production company combines the history of automobiles with Ford’s innovations with SK’s technology.

The company announced that full production began on August 19th.

The facility is located in Hardin County and is committed to employing 5,000 workers. As of May, Battery Park had around 1,400 employees, according to documents submitted to the federal government.

Battery Park is a twin implant facility, and Kentucky 1 currently employs people. Kentucky 2 is currently behind as it said consumer demand for EVS is not where the automaker expected it.

Before fully production began in August, the plant faced many health and safety concerns raised with state government agencies, the Courier Journal reported previously, including concerns about chemical use, appropriate PPE and bat invasion.

Other projects

In 2022, Bowling Green was appointed as the future home for a planned $2 billion-related project, the Courier Journal reported earlier.

Envision AESC, a global battery technology company now known as AESC, is planning to produce battery cells and modules for multiple automakers, and was expected to begin production of batteries to power up to 300,000 electric vehicles per year by 2027.

However, while the building’s shell is being constructed, the project is essentially abandoned, but the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that the promised work and output have yet to come into effect in the Commonwealth.

Livian, a little closer to Jefferson County, an electric car maker that builds sports utility vehicles and trucks, invested $10 million in Britt County in 2023 to expand its part operation and remanufacturing facility that rebuilds vehicle parts such as electrical hardware, drive units and battery systems.

And despite the EV market’s struggle with consumers, longtime EV maker Tesla is finally selling vehicles in Kentucky. State law previously blocked consumer sales from automakers, but in the second half of 2024, Tesla found a legal warning and was able to obtain a dealer license. As of this summer, the automakers are selling vehicles and offering leasing options from their Louisville locations, the Courier Journal first reported.

FEMA staff say Congressional Trump officials will put Katrina-level disasters at risk

0

play

WASHINGTON – Nearly 30 staff members from the US agency responding to natural disasters warned Congress in a letter that the inexperienced experience of top Trump administration appointees could lead to catastrophes at the level of Hurricane Katrina.

The letter, signed by 35 appointed employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said current leaders of the agency, including representatives of Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem and David Richardson, are not qualified to manage natural disasters and are eroding their ability to respond to hurricanes and other emergencies.

NOEM requirements review all contracts and subsidize contracts worth over $100,000.

Congress calls for FEMA to be an independent cabinet-level agency to free it from interference from the DHS and protect FEMA employees from “politically motivated firing” to prevent “not just another national catastrophe like Hurricane Katrina, but also the effective dissolution of FEMA itself.”

DHS and FEMA did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Noem and Richardson’s criticism. The Trump administration has said FEMA is ready to respond to the hurricane this year.

The letter of protest was sent days before Katrina’s 20th anniversary, causing catastrophic floods in New Orleans and catastrophic destruction along the Gulf coast in August 2005, killing more than 1,800 people.

It also released two months into the US hurricane season, leaving individual states far more burdens to deal with natural disasters when President Donald Trump said he wanted to significantly reduce the size and mission of FEMA.

Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters in US history. This is part of a breakdown of leadership and response at the city, state and federal levels. Congress passed the Post-Katrina Emergency Reform Act in 2006, giving FEMA more responsibility and introducing safeguards that mitigate other failed responses.

The letter warns that the Trump administration is revoking these reforms, sending FEMA back to pre-Katrina levels by cutting funds, reducing disaster recovery and training programs, and hindering its ability to act quickly for strict new surveillance policies.

The letter urges Republican-controlled Congress to protect FEMA from fundraising and staff cuts, which is guided by administrators with the qualifications and experience to manage disaster response.

The current proxy administrator, Richardson, is a former US Marine and DHS civil servant with no experience in emergency management.

Many FEMA staff were confused when Richardson said he didn’t realize that the US had a hurricane season that began in June and continued into November.

The burning man’s entrance was temporarily closed after rain

Among Burning Man attendees, it becomes a faith article that outsiders seize the opportunity to suggest that the event has lost its cool.

BlackRock City, Nevada – Wind Storm. Slippery mud. Large traffic jams in rural Nevada. It’s time to burn the man again.

Tens of thousands of “burners” gather in remote desert areas to celebrate art, music and personal freedoms over a week. The USA Today Network Reporter, which covers the event, has been clogged with traffic for 19 hours since August 24th, and the entryway on August 25th was seven hours.

The storm that struck the Black Rock desert on August 24th temporarily suspended entry to the event, which officially began at 12:01am that day. Gates resumed around 7am on August 25th, with the event organizers saying 40,000 people already on the scene.

Most attendees pass through Reno and then head north to the desert camp. There, they will build a temporary city with over 70,000 people before being erased in a week.

Veteran Burner Santiago Parriz said his longest was waiting to enter Burning Man this year. Even before Gates was closed to BlackRock City, the Pariz lined up for over seven hours, waiting until sunrise on August 25th.

“I never know how long it will be. It won’t take more than three hours for me,” he said.

In addition to temporarily halting entry, organizers asked people in the camp to avoid driving, but said temporary flights to the airport could resume. Burning Man participants typically include a considerable number of California-based high-tech workers, with past participants including Elon Musk and Google’s leaders.

Burning Man officials said four minor injuries have been reported as a result of wind and dust, and Livestream’s webcasts have been declining. Also, Vitaliy Deynega, founder of the Ukrainian News Outlet and Ukrainian Witness Project, Ukrainian large-scale artwork “Black Cloud” was destroyed on August 23 by a wind of 50 mph.

“The weather is expected to remain unstable and will remain unstable for another two days. Be careful of your forecasts when planning your trip to BlackRock City,” the organizers said. “Common sense and perception of changes in conditions will help you.”

This year’s burning man

The Black Rock Desert is a vast, uncharacteristic plain made up of fine alkaline dust. Early arrivals this year reported that there was no rain earlier this year, and that the dust was very loose rather than the usual hard loads. According to a social media post from attendees, the strong winds that followed on August 24th and 25th created a massive sandstorm when they tore through the shade structure and flipped at least one Portapotti.

The afternoon shower is projected in the area in the second half of August 25th, with mainly clear skies and nearly 90 degrees high, with gusts of wind up to 15 mph.

Ticket prices started at $550 this year, but participants can purchase more expensive items to subsidize other attendees. Events are usually sold out, but tickets can still be purchased this year.

On August 25, Burning Man officials said the focus is on supporting drivers who have already attended the event but have not yet reached the campsite. It takes more than eight hours for participants to travel only a few miles to a temporary city as participants pass ticket checks, security screenings and greeter stations.

“The rain and wind have stopped at the BRC,” organizers said in their morning update. “The ground is drying out and Gate Road vehicles are starting to move into town. Take your time and follow the instructions from our staff.”

The Vision and Past of the Burning Person

Burning Man was mostly in peace in 2024, but in the 2023 version, heavy rainfall in the city midway through the week, resulting in a massive mudfest. The subsequent road closures have inconvenient for small voice minorities such as DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock, but most attendees were happy to splash through the mud until the roads were exhausted.

Burning Man is guided by 10 principles, including “radical independence,” and participants are encouraged to “discover, exercise and depend on their inner resources.” The spirit of the entire event reflects that, and although there are no permitted food or products sold during the event, many camps distribute free food via public schedules. Participants will wear a variety of costumes and nude by admiring large art installations and dancing all night with mobile DJ vehicles.

The event culminates with two massive “burns” on two nights of Labor Day. Noisy fireworks are heavy 100 feet wooden man statue burning, and the fierce temple burning.

It’s not finished yet

Among Burning Man attendees, it becomes a faith article for people in the “default world” to seize the opportunity to suggest that the event is losing its cool.

However, organizers acknowledge that they are financially struggling to continue the event. This requires vast logistics and expensive federal permits from BLM.

“We are pleased that despite operating in 2024 with financial losses, our financial outlook is much stronger than it was a year ago, as a result of our hard work and participation from the community,” CEO Marian Goodell wrote in an August 13 message to community members. “Combined with charitable donations, cost reductions in mission parallels, 10% reductions and collaborations with partners to reduce costs, a financial recovery has begun ongoing this year.”

The photo shows Trump using the American flag for symbolism

play

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to punish those who burn the flag, but the courts have long supported the practice as a protected right under the First Amendment.

The August 25th order aims to prosecute people who burn flags related to other violence, including inciting riots, Trump said. The order does not designate a prison sentence, but the president told reporters in the oval office that burning the flag would result in a “year of prison.”

The US Supreme Court held in 1989 that burning or destroying the national flag was protected as a right to free speech. It once again became a topic of national conversation as the flag-fire incident in protest went viral and attracted controversy. Trump repeatedly floated a ban on burning the flag during the 2024 presidential election after protests in Washington burned the American flag and caught the rage of his Democratic rival at the time.

Trump has frequently adopted the symbolism of the American flag throughout his political career and as a prominent visual of the Pro Trump Magazine movement. The flag has also been featured heavily during Trump’s campaign and presidential appearances.

Two new 88-foot flag poles were installed on the White House grounds, carrying our flags. After President Trump was desperately needed and he said he would pay him himself.

“This is a gift from me, something I’ve always missed from this epic place,” Trump said in a social media post. “Hopefully they’ll be on both sides of the White House for years to come!”

Mar-A-Lago Flag Pole

Trump installed an 80-foot flagpole at a private club in Palm Beach, Florida in October 2006, but the work was carried out without the height and location of the town’s ordinance that violated permits and poles, according to previous reports by the Palm Beach Post, part of the USA Today Network.

Trump sued the town for millions over repeated demands that he withdraw Paul. The town retaliated with a daily fine of $1,250 for code violations. Both parties finally resolved the case.

Lil Nas X faces four felony charges following his arrest in Los Angeles last week, officials said.

The 26-year-old “Old Town Road” rapper, Montero Lamar Hill, was charged with three batteries injured by a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has been confirmed to USA Today.

Lil Nas X pleaded not guilty on Monday, August 25th. A Los Angeles judge set bail at $75,000 and said the singer must attend an anonymous drug meeting.

USA Today contacted the representative of Lil Nas X for comments.

The rapper was arrested shortly after 6am on Thursday, August 21st, Los Angeles Sheriff’s prisoner records show. In an earlier statement to USA Today, Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department said he responded that morning to a “naked man walking on the street” on Ventura Boulevard.

“On arrival, the suspect was charged by an officer and taken into custody,” LAPD said. “He was taken to a local hospital due to an overdose and was placed in a battery arrest by a police officer.” Madison later confirmed that the incident was linked to the arrest of Lil Nass X.

Police said they believe Lil Nas X was using drugs during the incident. However, his lawyer, Christy O’Connor, said he was not using illegal drugs and described the episode as an artist’s insane.

Lil Nas X, who was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards and won two, achieved a breakthrough in 2018 with the extremely popular song “Old Town Road” and released his debut studio album “Montero” in 2021.

Return to School Scholarship Summary: State Courts, Constitutions, Federalism

0

It’s hard to believe that summer is over. This is a summary of new scholarships in state law to prepare for a new semester.

State Constitutional Law

As the famous Judge Hans Linde once wrote about the state constitution, “the first thing.” I’ll start with a new job in the state constitution.

From rights and structure to local and federal relations, Jessica Bruman Pans and I have a new casebook at Foundation Press this summer. State Constitution: Cases and Principles. We discuss or are willing to talk about the book more generally about teaching state constitutional law, with those who are considering or currently offering courses.

Marcus Gadson’s Book Incitement: How America’s constitutional order emerged from a violent crisis It is currently available on NYU Press. It’s a must-read – to forge several early state establishment documents and to inspiring and keenly inform the violent conflicts that have recurred in state governments around the country. As the nation reflects recent potential constitutional conflicts, Gadson’s book offers important reflections from the state’s experience.

My colleague Brina Godard’s article, “Disenenfranchisement Creep,” Virginia Legal Reviewexplains overlooked ways to prevent voters from improperly depriving them of their rights through both formal and legal measures and informal hurdles. She argues that these forms of disenfranchising violate the state’s constitutional restrictions and that state constitutional litigation could provide remedials.

Molly Brady’s new symposium work, “Discussions on “public use” in state constitutional treaties,” takes on conspiracy-involved sensitiveness among those interested in the law. Her essay reveals how the constitutional drafters of 19th century states discussed the meaning of “public use” in the context of Takes. Their arguments did not reflect the inevitable march (or antipathy) over the broad definition of public use adopted by the US Supreme Court. Kero vs. New London A century later. Rather, the state’s arguments and answers reflect a variety of views on the breadth of public use and the principles of limitations.

Two other new works call for an agreement to interpret the well-known request of Judge William Brennan’s famous state courts more broadly than their federal counterparts. William Berry’s article, “Reliably Save the National Penalty Clause from Doctrine,” criticizes the state court’s harsh criminal penalty dul, arguing that the similarities between the eighth ban on amendments to the cruel and unusual punishment of the US Constitution imposes restrictions on state ruling laws.

And in “New Judicial Federalism and Establishment Clauses: The Ten Commandments of the Classroom as a Case Study of State Constitutional Protection,” Caroline Mara Corbyn argues that state courts can and should interpret the state constitution to assert the separation of church states. Under her approach, state courts appropriately reject laws like Louisiana’s mandate that displays 10 commandments in all public school classrooms.

It is also very valuable, focusing on the constitutional laws of a particular state or a subset of states. Articles by Katrina Fisher Kew, Nicholas Robinson and Scott Fein, “Constitutional Guarantees of Environmental Rights in New York” provide a context that supports the interpretation of New York’s new rights as “cleaning air and water and cleaning a healthy environment.” My colleague Derek Klinger’s new work, “Constitutional Limitations on Legislative Overrides of Ohio’s Statistical Initiatives.” Case Western Reserve Method Reviewaddressing the timely question of whether state legislatures could override statutory initiatives enacted by the people, arguing that the Ohio Constitution limits such overrides. And “Tiffany Lee examines and analyzes 11 state constitutional provisions that explicitly protect individual privacy, taking into account the scope of comparison and enforcement of these provisions.

State court

The past few months have also brought in fascinating new jobs at state courts. Constance Van Kley’s new article, “The Statewide Indunction: State Powers and Meaningful Remedies” (and State Court Report Characteristics), she predicts that debate over a universal injunction currently being heated at the federal level is heading towards state courts. But she argues that state courts should resist federal imitation on the topic. The constitutional and institutional differences in states support statewide injunctions, whatever the correct answer is at the federal level.

Adam Sopko’s upcoming articles Southern California Legal Review, “The supervision of the state’s Supreme Court reveals the broad powers of state high courts to exercise their exercise over the operation of the state’s judiciary. This article details and bounds the limits of supervisory power that influences individual rights and partnerships and defends court supervisors.

“Unconstitutional but not unconstitutional,” Cornell Law ReviewKatherine Steifel criticizes the doctrinal rule that most state courts apply: in 40 states and the District of Columbia, her investigation shows that courts refuse to invalidate legislation unless they are unconstitutional “beyond reasonable doubt.” She argues that the standard is inconsistent with the hegemony clause and fails to play the role of judicial protection and rejecting unconstitutional laws.

Federalism and national institutions

Many recent works address timely issues related to federalism or state government agencies.

With “federalism and the new national security,” Harvard Law ReviewAshley Deeks and Kristen Eichensehr explain the rise in state laws dealing with national security, from Tiktok regulations to laws governing international commercial transactions. Deeks and Eichensehr suggest a pathway to exploiting the benefits of this “entrepreneurialism” and minimize their possible shortcomings.

In “National Capacity Crisis,” Nicholas Bagley and David Schleicher add important aspects to the ongoing academic dialogue regarding the state’s ability (and “rich”) to criticize the US government’s ability to provide effective basic services and infrastructure. Bagley and Schleicher agree with these criticisms, but they observe that much of the responsibility is misdirected. It is the state and local governments that need to address the issue of capacity, not federal governments, as they provide most of the services that people depend on. Bagley and Schleicher take up the task by identifying key factors for the dysfunction of sub-national governments. This is a lack of accountability in sub-national policies, overly stringent administrative laws, and highly restrictive fiscal restrictions. The list may sound dry, but the work is not, and is an important reading for those interested in effective government.

Quinn Yeargain will take up different topics in a potentially timely manner and make a point in the future Discussions from UCLA Law Review The essay, “22-second amendment State Enforcement” is obligated to strengthen “22 amendments of the amendment” if the president is seeking a third term, and to enforce the 22nd amendment. Eargain claims that the Supreme Court has an opinion Trump v. Anderson It cannot be applied in the context of the 22nd Amendment, and state officials will be obligated to ban the third president from voting.

What about instances where states collide with each other? In “SHIELDS AS STATES”, we are approaching the following Minnesota Legal ReviewLindsay Wiley considers disputes that arise when one state’s law attempts to protect residents from the laws of another state (such as the Abortion Shield Act). Wiley insists on that Parent’s country Doctrines (usually known as the basis of Article III status) should be reconceptualized to inform these interstate disputes, and should support internal protection rather than “outside the territory.”

Finally, two new works highlight the institutional role of states that could fly under the radar. “In federalism in adjudication state,” David Chen says that states generally play a role in federal agency adjudication schemes, providing a more pluralistic, distributed adjudication than most administrative jurists would expect. And with “unlimited county government,” Daniel Rosenbaum uses examples of sheriff’s offices and library districts to tackle another ununderstood agency within the nation (county government) and explore its underestimated power over the consequential issues.

As always, send me a new article and read the recommendations. A summer happy ending for everyone.

French government risks collapse after budget trust votes in September

0

Paris
Reuters
–

The French minority government could be ousted next month after three major opposition parties said they would not support the vote of trust announced on September 8th by Prime Minister François Beyloux’s plan for budget cuts.

The far-right National Rally and the Greens said they would vote against him. Socialists said they didn’t see how they could back him up in a vote where Byrou’s fate was primarily lying.

If he loses his trust vote in the Parliament, the Bailu government will collapse.

Uncertainty has turned investors over, pushing the risk premium of French bonds across German equivalents to its highest level since mid-June, five basic points above. The CAC-40 index of major French stocks fell 1.6% over the day.

If the government falls, President Emmanuel Macron can quickly name the new prime minister, ask Beyloo to remain as head of the caretaker government, or call for a snap election.

Macron lost his last Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, in a no-confidence vote on the budget in late 2024 after taking office in just three months after another SNAP election in July of that year.

Bailou admitted that seeking the confidence of a highly fragmented Congress is a risky gamble.

“Yes, that’s dangerous, but it’s even more dangerous to do nothing,” he said at a press conference, noting what he said was the huge danger the country faced because of its enormous debt.

He said he will measure whether he has enough support in Parliament to narrow his budget of 44 billion euros ($515.1 billion) as he attempts to tame while keeping a deficit that reached 5.8% of gross domestic product last year and is nearly twice the EU’s official 3% limit.

If the government wins a vote of trust, it only means he supports his views on French fiscal issues, with a vote on the actual budget itself scheduled for the end of the year.

Bayrou proposed to discard two public holidays and frozen welfare spending and tax brackets at the 2025 level in 2026, but will not adjust for inflation. He said his suggestion to scrap bank holidays could be tweaked.

Far-right party chief Jordan Bardera said Beiru effectively announced the “end of his government” by asking for a vote.

“RN will never vote in favor of a government where the decision is wretched by the people of France,” he said in X. Leader Marine Le Pen said RN will vote for Beiroo, just like the Greens.

Heard left France said he has not stepped down. The vote will mark the end of the government.

The vote of socialist lawmakers is critical to Beyloo’s fate. Because if they join other left-wing parties and join the far right in a vote against the government, there will be enough votes to expel them.

Socialist MP Arthur Delaporte, a party spokesman, said Beyloux was “deaf to the demands of France.”

“I don’t know how I can vote for confidence,” Della Porto told reporters. He opened the door to discuss whether Bayrou was willing to change its budget plan. “For now, he seems stubborn,” he said.

The confidence vote takes place just two days before the planned protest, is called on social media and supported by leftist parties and some unions.

The general call for protest on September 10 was compared to the yellow best protest that broke out in 2018 about fuel prices hikes and high cost of living.

“Gillets Jaune” protests swirled by Macron and his wider efforts to reform economically.

The Maryland lottery says the winner used the Stranger license plate for the numbers

A Maryland man says he hit a jackpot thanks to a tag he saw in a stranger’s car earlier this month.

The St. Mary County lottery player, about 80 miles southeast of Washington, DC, won $200,000 on five pick games on August 7th. He says he chose five numbers based on tags posted to the track while it was stopped in a red light.

The man who chose to remain anonymous said he saw the license plate during his one-way commute over 70 miles, the Maryland lottery said.

“I went to work and stopped at a red light at Charlotte Hall and noticed the truck tag in 19363,” he said on August 15th after winning the award. “And the rest is history.”

The player said he bought the combination on August 6th and 7th with four $1 straight bets and four $1 boxed bets, according to the release.

After the midday painting on August 7th, he saw the numbers for the winning pick 5 and thought the numbers looked familiar.

“I was craving the air. I was very happy,” he said according to the release.

The man had planned to retire in about a year, so he had planned to use the prize money to renovate the old home of his parents, where he grew up, the Maryland lottery said.

From now on, the man said he plans to continue playing the lottery in the same way – to wait for the number to play until it catches his attention.

Third Base Recaes, a convenience store located on Point Lookout Road in St. Mary County, will also receive a $2,000 bonus as a result of the victory.

Mississippi declares a state of public health emergency over rising infant mortality rates

0

The Mississippi Department of Health declared a public health emergency Thursday on the rise in the state’s infant mortality rate.

According to a news release from the state health department, 9.7 deaths occurred for every 1,000 births in Mississippi in 2024, with the highest incidence in over a decade. More than 3,500 babies in Mississippi have died since 2014 before the age of one year.

“The losses for all infants represent families being devastated, communities being affected, and shortened futures. We cannot accept these figures as reality. We declare that a public health emergency is more than a policy decision.

An emergency declaration creates specific opportunities for mobilizing resources to address issues. The state’s health department’s strategies include activating standardized systems of maternal and infant care, eliminating the desert of obstetric care, expanding access to mothers and babies resources through community healthcare programs and home visits; Education on safe sleep practices.

“Improved maternal health is the best way to reduce infant mortality,” Edney said. “It means better access to prenatal and postnatal care, greater community support, and more resources for mothers and babies. Healthy women of birth age are more likely to have a healthy pregnancy, which leads to healthy babies.”

About a third of U.S. counties don’t have a single obstetric clinician, according to a report released last year by Dimes, a nonprofit for infant and maternal health. In Mississippi, nearly half of all counties are considered maternity care deserts, according to the organization.

“The Mississippi Department of Health’s public health emergency declaration in response to infant mortality is a painful reminder of the maternal and infant health crisis our country faces,” Dimes President and CEO Cindy Rahman said in a statement. “While Mississippi accounts for less than 1% of US births, the state accounts for more than 1.6% of all infant deaths. These losses should be a call for awakening to the nation.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will release its own data on infant mortality later this year, but the Mississippi Health Department said “we were unable to wait for the urgency of this crisis to take action.”

Latest available data from the CDC shows that the national infant mortality rate rose in 2022 for the first time in 20 years. Mississippi had the highest infant mortality rate in all 50 states that year, more than 60% higher than the national average.

According to a state news release, the main causes of infant mortality in Mississippi are congenital malformations, premature birth, low birth weight and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Black babies in Mississippi are particularly vulnerable, with over 15 deaths per 1,000 births in 2024, already jumping 24% in a year, above average fees.

Recent studies have shown that there are several possible relationships between infant mortality and abortion restrictions. CNN’s investigation report found infant mortality rates skyrocketed in Texas after the six-week abortion ban was enacted in 2021, and a survey released in October found that the impact of the ban and restrictions enacted by the U.S. Supreme Court DOBBS has been large enough to make the US DOBBS decision to significantly abolish federal rights.

March of Dimes also highlighted the “important” importance of protecting Medicaid to support the health care of newborns and their mothers.

“Medicaid has become an important lifeline for moms and babies, covering nearly 53% of Mississippi’s births and 40% nationwide. “The United States is one of the most dangerous developing countries for births. We can’t afford to retreat.”

DHL, Royal Mail etc will suspend shipping to us within customs duties

DHL, one of Europe’s largest package shipping and delivery companies, announced on August 22 that it is one of several services that suspend shipments to the US.

DHL Pursel Germany and its domestic division, Deutsche Post, have suspended “transporting and transporting customers to the US via postal networks as of Saturday, August 23rd, as of Saturday, August 23rd.

It effectively sunk down a minimal trade agreement, citing an executive order signed by Trump in late July. In 2024, the minimum shipment to the United States was valued at over $1.36 billion, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

As a result, Reuters reported that postal groups from several European countries have announced that they will suspend shipping of parcels to the US.

The suspension is temporary, but “important questions remain unresolved.”

DHL said the suspension of U.S. services is a temporary measure that will largely be affected by new restrictions and processes implemented by regulators.

“The key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how future tariffs will be collected, what additional data will be required, and how data will be transmitted to US customs border protection,” the company said in a statement. “These changes have affected all mail and parcel service providers around the world, many of whom have already announced a suspension of mail transport to the US.”

Other companies that are members of the European Postal Services Association have been advised that they need to temporarily restrict or suspend the transportation of goods through the US postal network, the statement said.

Until the suspension is lifted, customers still have the option to send private packages labeled as “gifts” as long as they are worth less than $100. These must be sent from person to person, not from business to customer. Other items can be sent via DHL Express, a more expensive option, but are subject to applicable customs duties. Commercial freight is subject to a minimum of 15% customs duties, with some categories having a higher obligation.

DHL plans to resume standard shipments to the US and did not say it had contacted DHL for details.

“DHL is closely monitoring further developments and is in touch with US authorities along with European partners,” the statement read. “The company’s goal is to resume shipping mail items to the US as soon as possible.”

What are the exceptions to de minimis?

The De Minimis exemption refers to section 321 of the Customs Act of 1930. This allows the Treasury Secretary to waive any obligation or fees that are inconvenient to collect taxes rather than the income is worth it. In fact, this policy allowed businesses to ship low value packages without US tariffs. The Trump administration said customs and border patrols will process more than 4 million minimum shipments daily before an executive order ending the exemption.

The exception has been the fore and backwards over the past few months between the Trump administration and China, resulting in an early speed bump. Originally scheduled to close in February, it was postponed after starting to stack packages without time to plan and implement policy changes.

The August 29 deadline will be closed several months after the loophole was closed due to imports on May 2nd, especially from China and Hong Kong. More than half of all packages, including the De Minimis exemption, come from China, and more than 30% of all daily packages shipped under De Minimis are from Temu and Shein, Reuters reported in February.

Other international shippers suspend US services

Postal services in other countries, including the UK Royal Mail, Asian shippers, and Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, France and Italy, have also suspended certain cargo in the US before the exemption officially closes on Friday, August 28th, as reported by NPR and Reuters.

Here’s what the White House said about Trump’s hand-makeup, bruises

0

play

Images of President Donald Trump’s hands, which appear to be covered in patches of makeup, have become a virus for the past few days after similar images of his hands were captured and circulated last month.

The photo zoomed in on the president’s photo during an appearance in the Oval Office on August 22 shows the back of one hand, with a section of skin covered in light foundation makeup that caused speculation among social media users.

Trump’s bruises on his right hand on Monday, August 25th were evident in a photo taken in an oval office during a meeting with the president and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

The White House announced on July 17 that Republican leaders have recently been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common venous condition, after images taken by the president showed visible swelling in their lower extremities. White House press chief Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference in July that the diagnosis came to investigate swelling and bruises in the leg behind the president’s right hand after a medical test.

White House doctor bruised Trump’s hand in July

White House doctor Sean Barbabera described chronic venous deficiency as “benign and common” in a president’s health memo.

In a July memo, Barbabella said the recent images showing Trump’s hand bruises “consistent with frequent manual mild soft tissue stimulation,” referring to the use of aspirin as a standard cardiovascular prophylactic therapy.

“President Trump is in good health,” he said.

Similar images of apparent bruises at the president’s hands made a round online after French President Emmanuel Macron and Trump visited the White House on February 24th. Leavitt said the president’s hands were hurt by an NBC News statement that “it’s because they’re constantly working every day and waving.”

A photo of Trump’s hands covered in make-up was also seen at a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on July 27th.

What is chronic venous deficiency?

Chronic vein deficiency, common among people in the 70s, occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to send blood back to the heart. Leavitt said in July that there was “no evidence” for more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (thrombosis in the legs or arms of deep veins) and arterial disease. In additional trials, “there are no signs of heart failure, kidney damage or systemic disease,” Leavitt said.

The White House has not mentioned handmaking in its presidential health update.

Trump turned 79 on June 14th. He was the second oldest person to serve as president of the United States and began his oldest term as president.

The hidden dangers of your vacation drinks

0

play

  • Untreated water sources such as lakes and rivers can contain harmful bacteria and parasites that lead to disease.
  • Ice, fresh juices and cocktails from unreliable sauces can pose health risks, especially in areas with suspicious water quality.

The bleeding waters of the Slovenian lakes looked clear enough to allow you to drink it. It was the drinks that ruined her trip.

“She was sick as a dog for days,” recalls Chadwick.

Chadwick, who works for a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, said he would never forget the lesson “Don’t drink from natural sources like lakes.”

From contaminated water to sketchy street smoothies, the wrong drink can derail your vacation. And we can expect more incidents like Chadwick, as more people will probably be on vacation this summer than before.

Check out Elliott Confidentiala newsletter the travel industry doesn’t want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights and exclusive strategies to become a better traveler. But don’t tell anyone!

“Beware of the liquids you consume while traveling,” said Cai Glushak, Chief Medical Officer at Axa Partners North America. “This is especially true in environments that challenge the development and resources of environments that can be difficult to assure hygiene practices.”

Here are some things you need to know about what to drink, what to avoid, and what to do if you drink something you shouldn’t. I also share my story of drinks that I always regret.

So, what are you drinking on vacation?

Let’s start with the basics. When traveling, especially abroad, drink options range from safe to serious risk.

“One of the most important considerations when traveling internationally is the quality of tap water,” said Bill McIntyre, a spokesman for Global Rescue. “Some countries guarantee safe drinking water for residents and visitors, while others pose serious health risks.”

The World Health Organization publishes useful maps in countries with safe water. But it’s not just water. Ice, fresh juices, and even cocktails can lead to trouble. Phoenix registered nurse Annika Cariniemi learned this in a difficult way during her recent visit to Mexico.

“On hot days, I grabbed fresh fruit juice from my street cart,” she said. “It tasted amazing, until I realized that the ice was made from tap water. After 12 hours, I was curled up in my hotel room, fighting chills and stomach cramps.”

But the one drink that almost always gets you in trouble is alcohol. In hot climates, alcoholic beverages can dehydrate you.

“It can also worsen your symptoms and cause serious problems like pancreatitis, especially when combined with eating really rich foods.” “My advice is to use it moderately.”

Or not at all. Alcohol can also seriously undermine your judgment, and you will be deceived or taken away by waking up in prison, and even worse.

What if you drink something you shouldn’t

So you ignored the warnings (or didn’t see them), and now you’re paying the price. What now?

First of all, don’t panic. “Most cases of traveler diarrhea can be resolved on their own within a few days,” said Glushak of Axa. However, there are steps you can take to relieve symptoms and prevent complications.

  • Maintain hydration: Dehydration is the biggest risk. Bottle of water, electrolyte drinks, or clear soups.
  • Take over-the-counter medication: Anti-diabetics like iModium are useful, but use them sparingly. “If the cause is a bacteria or a parasite, they can prolong the disease,” said nurse Kariniemi.
  • Please call a doctor: If your symptoms are severe – consider a high fever, bloody stool, or dehydration – meet your doctor. “Don’t wait until the trip is too weak,” said Gobbels of Meggiet.

Pro Tip: Don’t wait for trouble. Pack your travel health kit with anti-diabetics, rehydrated salts, and the required prescription medication. But the most important thing to pack is probably what you’ve already guessed – a huge amount of common sense.

I’ll explain it.

Lessons taught me about drinking

So, what about my own lake bleeding story? Well, I happened to be near Lake Grenoble in France and not too far from there. I was there with a friend for a few weeks. We were helping to build a chalet in the French Alps as part of our summer mission. One Saturday we decided to hike the old Roman trail that leads to the top of the mountain.

At the halfway point, I was thirsty and saw the trough flowing through the spring water. And I thought of the exact same thing that Chadwick’s friend did: “This looks good enough to drink.”

That’s why I did it.

I started to feel sick on the way home. And by the time we got to the cabin, I was in stomach pains. I spare you the details, except that I discovered that no vomit occurs in horror movies, I spare you the details.

After that, I never drank “spring” water again.

But that wasn’t the most dangerous thing that had happened to me. Looking back, I might have been in more trouble when I was younger, when I went bar hopping in various places around the world. As a consumer advocate, many of my reader cases start with cocktails, particularly those that involve impulsive timeshare purchases.

My solution: I stopped drinking alcohol completely. I’m sure it’s blocking me out of the world of trouble.

I’ll drink it

Whether it’s a seemingly untouched lake in Slovenia, or my own alpine trough fiasco that turned my stomach into an audition for a horror film, the lessons are clear.

But it’s not the water of a scapegoat. Margarita slash leglet smoothie you grabbed in Cancun? It is basically a poor choice piñata, hiding tap water ice and existential horror. Alcohol is great for toasting the sunset, but as an agent of chaos, it dehydrates faster than moonlight, desert winds, and invites suspicious decisions such as buying a timeshare and getting a tattoo.

It’s better to pack electrolytes and turn the cap off to the side and remember that vacation isn’t dare. If in doubt, hydrate like a paranoid camel and save the postcard’s adventurous spirit. After all, the best travel stories shouldn’t start with “So, I was there, so I grabbed the toilet.”

For the first time, genetically modified pig lungs were implanted brain dead

0

A newly published report shows that the lungs of a genetically modified pig were brain-deadly implanted and functioned for nine days.

There has been recent success in transplanting pig kidneys and hearts into humans, and this is considered to be the first attempt to transplant pig lungs into humans. Doctors hope that one day this will become an option for people in need of organs, but experts say it won’t be time soon.

The authors of the first affiliated hospital at Guangzhou Medical University in Ching did not identify patients in the study, but he is said to be a 39-year-old man who was declared brain dead after a cerebral hemorrhage. After obtaining consent from the man’s family, the doctor implanted a pig’s lungs into his body. The findings were published in Nature Medicine on Monday.

With human-to-human or animal-to-human transplants (also known as xenografts), doctors carefully monitor infection and rejection.

Patients were given several medications to reduce the risk of infection and rejection. The lungs themselves were also undergoing six gene editing, and donor pigs were kept in very clean and strictly controlled areas throughout their lifetimes.

In this study, researchers reported that they did not see any immediate signs of rejection after implantation, but found problems one day later.

A blood flow problem caused extensive swelling throughout the man’s body, as a liquid potentially accumulated in his tissues. In addition to helping a person breathe, the lungs play a role in blood circulation.

There were some signs of partial recovery a few days after the transplant, but despite all caution, the doctor saw signs that the man’s body was beginning to reject his organs.

At the request of the man’s family, the doctors completed the experiment.

The photo shows the pig's lungs right after and four days after the pig has been transplanted.

“This study shows the feasibility of xenografting of the lungs from pigs to humans, but there remain substantial challenges associated with organ rejection and infection,” the researchers write in a new study. They concluded that more research is needed before the treatment can be repeated again in clinical trials.

The world needs donated organs. In the US alone in 2023, all organ transplant wait lists were twice as many times complete.

Last year there was more 48,000 transplants In the US, over 103,000 people were on the waiting list. Approximately 13 According to the Federal Agency for Health Resources and Services, or the HRSA, people in the United States die every day waiting for a transplant.

Pig valves have been implanted in humans for the past 30 years. Although organs are difficult, doctors have seen limited success with genetically modified pig hearts and pig kidneys. They also experimented with genetically modified pig livers, but at least so far less successful.

The most successful so far is Tim Andrews of Massachusetts, who lives with the kidneys of a genetically modified pig that was transplanted at Massachusetts General Hospital in January.

Experts say there are ways to go before pig lung transplants show many success.

“No one will sign up for a nine-day lung transplant,” said Dr. Adam Grisemer, a transplant surgeon who is a senior member of the xenotransplant team at NYU Langone’s Transplant Institute, who was not involved in the new study.

Griesemer said in previous experiments that pig lung transplants into other animals showed similar results.

“I think it’s very important to do these studies because we can’t assume that animal models fully reflect what happens to human recipients,” Griesmer said.

Chinese researchers said some have conducted the study because of the “transformational potential” of xenotransplants.

Dr. Ankit Bharat, director of the Northwest Medical Canned Chest Research Institute, found the study interesting, but added that he believes that pig-to-human lung transplants will not occur anytime soon.

“We will learn something from now on, but we are not entirely sure this opens the door to truly bringing to great challenges.

Lungs are much more complicated to transplant than organs like kidneys, he said.

The lungs play an important role in hemofiltration, temperature regulation, platelet production, pH balance, and immune defense, and have metabolic and endocrine functions. Also, unlike the kidneys and heart, the lungs are exposed to external elements such as viruses and bacteria.

They are so large and covered with proteins that aid in immune defense, it is difficult to avoid the body’s instincts to reject something foreign, even if you have a lung transplant from another person, Bharat said.

“It’s a difficult problem to solve. Even human organs don’t really solve it,” he said. “So we’re just adding another complex layer of pig antigens that could become another problem.”

Researchers behind the new study suggested that the male body showed no signs of immediate rejection of the pig’s lungs, but Bharat is less sure after seeing the shared x-ray and CT images.

“There’s a lot of damage,” Bharat said. “I’m not sure if I’m completely certain there’s no superacute rejection.”

Bharat believes that advances in the use of human stem cells than transplants can be promising, at least when it comes to lung transplantation.

Griesemer said that stem cell therapy can be used to replace human cells with pig cells, as well as stem cell therapy, as well as studies that use pig lungs as scaffolds.

“In a sense, the cells are human, but the structure is from pigs, so it’s not actually a xenograft,” Griesmer said. “It’s another possibility for people who need a lung transplant, how medical technology can solve this problem.”

Recent advances in cloning and gene editing have led a small number of institutions to better understand infection control and to breakthroughs in transplanting other pig organs.

Three people died in a helicopter crash during a flight lesson on the Isle of Wight, UK

Three people were killed when the helicopter crashed on the Isle of Wight during flying lessons Monday morning, officials said.

One person has been hospitalized and is in serious condition, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight.

Flight operator Northumbria Helicopters said the four were on board as the aircraft took off from Santown Airport around 9am local time and were offering flight lessons.

About 24 minutes later, police said they were called to a helicopter crashed in a field near a road in the Shanklin area.

Aviation footage from British media shows that the body of the aircraft, a G-OCLV model, has been significantly damaged.

Emergency responders from various agencies were deployed at the accident scene and roads were closed.

The UK’s Aviation Accident Investigation Department dispatched inspectors to collect evidence and make inquiries.

Northumbria Helicopters said they are working with investigators.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Police in Hampshire and Isle of Wight said they could not provide further information about the officials.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
