Trump administration cancels investigation tracking American food insecurity

play

The Trump administration cancelled the USDA’s annual food insecurity survey and ended decades of efforts to track the number of Americans struggling to access enough food, the Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.

The USDA said household food security reports have become “overly politicized” and are no longer needed, but the 2024 edition will still be released in October. The 2025 investigation will not be conducted, the USDA said in a statement.

The cancellation of the report, which has been in place for 30 years, comes amid rising food insecurity and recent cuts in federal food assistance programs, including more stringent work requirements for recipients of the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program.

The USDA said it would continue to have access to more “timely and accurate data,” claiming its annual report “is inaccuracy, incorrect indicators, zero accountability, and a massive willingness for larger, larger government programs.”

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the cancellation of the investigation.

The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

How to see Saturn from the closest perspective to Earth

Saturn will host shows for professional astromers and backyard astromers, making it the brightest and closest to Earth all year round.

According to NASA, Saturn will be in the opposite direction on Sunday, September 21st.

In the morning sky, Venus and Jupiter also appear in the eastern part, but Saturn “will brighten in the sky” and the agency states in the video, “What’s Up: Tips from September 2025 NASA.”

According to NASA, the planet is very bright so the Stargazers can see it with the naked eye.

There are things you need to know about the planet and how you can see it.

When will Saturn oppose it?

According to NASA, Saturn will be opposed on Sunday, September 21st. This is when it’s the biggest and brightest of the year.

It will be displayed during September.

What stage is the moon at?

There is a new moon on Sunday. Therefore, according to NASA, the light of the moon does not interfere with the Stargazer’s ability to see planets at night.

Where is Saturn?

At night, Saturn is located in the eastern sky in the evening, but as you approach the early morning, you will move into the western sky.

Do I need equipment to see Saturn?

No, according to NASA, no equipment is required to see the planet. Although it can be seen with the naked eye, a small telescope can help bring Stargazers to a better view.

No equipment is required, but you can use Stargazing apps like Stellarium and Sky Safari to help you find planets in the night sky.

If you are planning on stargizing outdoors, pack a mosquito repellent and check the weather forecast in advance to make sure the sky is clear.

Saturn appears on the same day as a partial solar eclipse

The solar eclipse that will occur on Sunday, September 21st is invisible in the US but is seen in Australia, the Antarctic, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

This is the second solar eclipse that will occur in September. The first was a complete lunar eclipse that occurred from September 7th to September 8th, but the lunar eclipse was also not visible in the United States.

Fall equinox is the day after a partial solar eclipse

Fall equinox will occur on Monday, September 22nd, according to NASA, the day after the solar eclipse is held.

equinox occurs once in March, once in September, once in equal lengths of day and night, twice a year.

“Equinox marks the exact moment when the center of the Sun crosses the equator plane of our planet,” NASA said on its website. “On the Equator Day, the Equator Observers will directly imaginate the Sun at noon.”

Personnel delivery in national parks had little obvious impact

Behind the scenes, park advocacy groups and some staff members said everything wasn’t going well in the national parks in the country.

play

Estes Park, Colorado – As her children danced stuffed animals around a 3D map of the mountain peaks and valleys in Rocky Mountain National Park, Chrissy Whissler began carving all the national parks she visited this year.

While she tallied, her souvenir sweatshirt from Mount Guadalupe National Park opened and showed her T-shirt from Blythe Canyon National Park.

Whistler, a Los Angeles mom who homeschools 13 and 10 through experiential learning, said she enrolled this year due to safety concerns about how the Trump administration’s staff cuts will affect national parks.

However, after a summer adventure, Whissler is happy to report her fears about staffing.

President Donald Trump’s administration has cut staffing across Park Services, and longtime park advocates and frequent users worried that the cuts could lead to messy parks and dirty bathrooms.

Despite widespread fears about the systemic collapse by some public activists and supporters, American national parks appear to have weathered most of the summer tourist season almost unharmed. Following the elimination of more than 25% of staff work, Secretary of Home Affairs Doug Burgham ordered park supervisors to prioritize services aimed at visitors.

There have been isolated reports of the issue, but visitors saw very few systematic issues. Instead, they marveled at Redwood and the giant sequoia, hiked the slot canyon, climbed the half dome in Yosemite, took photos of elk and moose in Rocky Mountain National Park, and watched stars swirling their heads at the Agate Fosilbed National Monument in Nebraska.

There is also no evidence that regular maintenance will be stopped. Among other items, federal purchasing records show the project to purchase 40 new picnic tables at Great Smoky Mountain National Park, draw cedar snake roofs at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, and buy two new thaws at Crater Lake National Park.

Behind the scenes, concerns about the lack of staff in the national park

But behind the scenes, park advocacy groups and some staff members said everything wasn’t going well in the country’s national parks.

Park advocacy groups that criticized Trump’s budget cuts say park staff have usd to hug visitors, especially as seasonal employees begin to leave in the coming weeks, to keep visitors happy and safe.

Park workers consulted by USA Today, budget analysts are sitting in the admissions booth, scientists are “volunteered” to run the visitor center, and in one park, archaeologists are trained to drive boats as the park is not permitted to hire a captain.

Other unemployment is inherently invisible to visitors, such as local environmental coordinators and climate change policy experts. Legally, national parks need to study and preserve landscapes and sites, and changing focus on visitors’ experiences means that research projects from decades ago have been put on hold or completely removed.

“The Park Service and park staff have made incredible attempts to do what is necessary to keep the park’s visits big, and that doesn’t have to be that way,” said Sarah Landstrom, Parks Visit Expert at the nonprofit National Park Conservation Association. “It was a kind of facade of the visitors’ experience, but the park is not just summer. They are forever, but this year summer worked.”

She is particularly concerned about the future.

“What will next year look like with losing a quarter of our staff and not being able to hire them to replace them? What will this fall look like when all seasonal workers are gone?” asked Landstrom.

The National Park Service did not respond to multiple requests for comments regarding maintenance, staffing or park visits. The USA Today review of preliminary visitor data shows that many park visits in 2025 have been up or flat so far.

Park visitors remain happy despite the cut

On a sunny day at Rocky Mountain National Park, at about 8,231 feet above sea level, first-time visitors Jake Kundert, 33, and Sarah Joaquin, 24, said the park’s rising peaks were meeting expectations. They also had no issues with the park’s timed booking system, which was their major concern when planning trips from New Hampshire. The couple said they were not aware of staffing concerns caused by Trump’s cuts, visiting for their wedding.

In addition to searching for moose, elk and other wildlife, the couple drove down America’s most paved trail ridge road, reaching its peak at 12,183 feet above sea level.

“Everything looked pretty clean. Some of the toilets were a little dirty, but that’s what you would expect,” Joaquin said.

Added Kundert: “I mean, I’m not expecting running water on top of the mountain.”

What kind of work does AI replace and which is safer?

0

Artificial intelligence and outsourcing are rapidly restructuring the workforce and forcing employers and employees to ask pressing questions about the future of their work.

While some roles remain difficult to automate due to regulation, trust, or pure physical complexity, others – Andrew Gadumsky, managing director of Aspen analysis and an expert on the use of AI in employment and workplace planning, is classified as “knowledgework,” vulnerable to automation and less resistant to AI.

Safe Work: Built on Trust, Regulation and Physicality

Some roles remain highly isolated from AI and automation. Simply because it cannot be fully replicated by machine or because society is not yet permitted. Ladders, Inc. is a digital job board that connects job seekers with employers. Marc Cenedella, founder of the company, said the jobs that are least likely to be automated are those that “require judgement and taste.” Roles that require empathy, judgment and physical skills are resistant to AI.

Physical Transactions

For example, we will take public services and emergency response. As Gadmski explains, “I always tell my daughter, you can always be a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. You can always be a firefighter.” These jobs require dexterity, quick decision-making, and physical exercise. This is an area where robotics still faces barriers to cost, trust and reliability.

Cenedella says, “I agree to observe things like fixing the sink, making the right kind of omelette, building the bus shelter, etc. We need people doing this job. Technology doesn’t exist yet for them to be automated.

That doesn’t mean they don’t use AI in the workplace to make their jobs easier, but that there is still an inherently human aspect to work that AI cannot replace. For example, “Firemen may have eyesight-enabled helmets that help them understand body temperature and flame or structural integrity during a reaction,” explains Gadmusky. In other words, “AI will reinforce and not replace” such roles.

Healthcare and Social Services

“The work that requires people to pass on knowledge, encouragement and wisdom cannot be replaced by AI yet,” says Cenedella. Therapists, doctors, coaches and teachers need to show empathy and connect with patients and students, and AI can’t do that.

Also, surgeons are relatively protected due to regulatory and financial factors. “Insurers may feel more comfortable than providing payments to nurses and doctors, but they may not feel that they are suitable for performing robots and certain types of surgery that have been made possible by AI,” Gadomski said. Concerns about trust and responsibility keep humans in the operating room and keep the robots out.

Law

Law is another major example. Paralegals and legal assistants may see automation being cut back on jobs, but lawyers are safe. “In order to step into court and have a defendant, you need to be an attorney. You need to go through the bar and get your license,” Gadmski says. Regulations ensure that human advocates remain central to justice.

Risk Work: Knowledge works without a physical anchor

Conversely, jobs that involve daily knowledge tasks – very repetitive and no specialized knowledge required – are at high risk. Gadumsky candidly explain: “If something is done instantly or continuously and doesn’t involve physical exercise, those jobs are really scrutiny.”

This includes transcription, scheduling, and other repetitive tasks. For example, AI captions or avatars can reduce the need for live note takers and sign language interpreters, thus trimming head counts where efficiency outweighs traditional roles.

Recruitment also shows this change. As Gadomski states, “Recruitment will not disappear because of AI. Recruitment will disappear because demand will decrease.” With workers staying longer and AI will increase production, there will be fewer recruitments for key roles, so recruiters will need to find workers to fill in noncritical roles.

Grey Area: Evolving Work

Some roles do not disappear, but will be converted instead. “Workers who concentrate their careers on solving a specific function/role) are not competing with AI. They work with it,” says Georgi Entheven, an MBA from Harvard University.

For example, radiological technicians are required for patient interaction during MRI scans. “Sorry, I’m not going to end up with a robot,” Gadmsky says. However, AI can reduce the total number of technicians needed as technology streamlines diagnostics and improves processes. They use AI to enable doctors to make diagnosis easier and make decisions.

Similarly, truck driving and cargo handling are only safe until the autonomous fleet is proven safer than human drivers. “If that really starts to happen, those jobs will become endangered species jobs,” warns Gadmski. Like electric vehicles, adoption once accelerates costs and risks favor technology.

What does this mean for the future workforce?

In short, AI is not a replacement for all workers, but it redraws maps of people who are essential to the workforce. Work that requires empathy, accountability and physical human presence remains protected. For workers, the safest carrier bet is an area that requires human trust, regulation and dexterity, such as law, medicine, public safety, and skilled trading. Meanwhile, such repetitive knowledge tasks without anchors have already slipped.

For employers, the challenge is strategic planning. “In a few years, we need to classify how we invest in the workforce,” advises Gadmsky. Companies need to decide which roles require human existence and ultimately can be replaced by technology. Technology will only continue to advance further, so now is the time to make that decision.

How much is the American Dream now? This is a malfunction.

0

Inflation is darkening America’s dreams.

It currently costs $5 million to fund eight key elements of the American Dream, including homeownership and parenting, according to a new analysis from Investopedia.

Everyone’s dreams are different. However, as Investopedia has found in compiling the September report, some human desires are universal.

In an accompanying survey, the financial journalism site asked 1,263 adults to identify goals associated with the American dream. Most people said they shared these eight aspirations.

  • Retire comfortably (86%)
  • Provide high quality healthcare (86%)
  • Owning a house (85%)
  • Raising a family (78%)
  • Own a new car (72%)
  • Go on holiday every year (71%)
  • Pet care (66%)
  • Wedding (55%)

This report clarifies the lifetime costs for each target and taps data from federal agencies, think tanks and industry groups.

play

Rethinking the American Dream: Degrees at Trade School and University

High school students and their parents are considering the benefits of university and university.

Here are the costs to achieve your American dreams

From maximum to minimum, the lifetime costs for each target are:

  • Resignation: $1.6 million
  • Home Owner: $957,594
  • Owning a new car: $900,346
  • Raise two children and pay for university: $876,092
  • Healthcare: $414,208
  • Annual leave: $180,621
  • Pets: $39,381
  • Wedding: $38,200

Adding them together will result in a lifetime cost of $5,043,323 to achieve the American Dream.

That’s a difficult amount considering the average American with a bachelor’s degree earns around $2.8 million in his career.

The American Dream is becoming more expensive

Last summer, on the campaign trail, presidential candidate Donald Trump pledged to “reclaim the American dream.”

However, the numbers suggest that dreams are becoming more expensive. Investopedia has found that most components of American Dream cost more than 2025 than 2024.

“You’re definitely looking at almost the full price hike, especially homeowners, children, and sending them to college,” said Caleb Silver, Chief Business Editor at People Inc. and Editor-in-Chief of Investopedia.

Investopedia is offering a lifetime supply of new cars at $900,346 in 2025, and $811,440 a year ago. Homeownership Lifetime is $957,594, up from $929,955.

But not everyone defines American dreams the same way.

Michael Strain, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and author of a 2020 book on American Dream, suggests that Investopedia may have set a bar too high.

“I don’t know if America should be equated with the lifestyle enjoyed by the top 10% of earning income,” he said.

To make you nervous, the American Dream is about a sense of upward trajectory. “Are you moving on?” he said. “Do you do better every year? Are your kids going to do better than you did?”

The key to the Investopedia report is to get people to think about how to fund their own American dreams.

“I hope people read this and think about what their dreams are in fact, so they can put a price tag on it and then come up with a real strategy that will allow them to make enough money to achieve it.”

Here is a detailed breakdown of the costs of American dreams:

Resignation: $1.6 million

According to Investopedia, $1.64 million represents the average cost of a 20-year retirement. This tab is based on average annual spending at retirement.

A year ago, Investopedia estimated the cost of resignation was just under $1.6 million.

If these numbers seem high, consider that financial advisors often instruct retirees to plan to spend only 4% of their savings on annual living expenses. 4% of $1.6 million is just $64,000.

Homeownership: $957,594

That figure reflects the average cost of buying a home and funding it on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, including interest, insurance, and property taxes.

A year ago, Investopedia estimated the cost of homeownership at $929,955.

The median American home prices are around $415,000, the report says. The rest of the lifetime tabs represent interest, insurance and taxes.

Owning a new car: $900,346

This figure reflects the cost of purchasing and financing a new car every ten years, between the ages of 22 and 75.

A year ago, Investopedia estimated the lifetime cost of ownership of a new vehicle at $811,440.

A survey by Investopedia found that 72% of Americans consider new cars to be a component of American dreams.

But not everyone agrees. The average US vehicle is nearly 13 years old, at record high.

Raising two children: $876,092

That figure covers the costs you pay to raise two children by the age of 18 and attend a public university for four years at a fee within the state.

The total cost of raising two children would be $645,819, Investopedia estimates estimated. College costs push numbers up well beyond $800,000.

These costs partly explain why Americans choose to have children.

Healthcare: $414,208

In previous American Dream reports, Investopedia did not include healthcare as a component. That’s not necessary, it’s not necessary, is it?

Americans need health care, but they want quality health care. Most survey respondents said access to quality healthcare is part of America’s dream.

Total represents the average lifelong medical expenses between the ages 22 and 85.

Annual leave: $180,621

Research by Investopedia shows that most Americans consider vacations to be an unnegotiable component of American dreams.

The diagram above shows one annual leave between the ages of 22 and 85, assuming that the average leave costs $2,867.

A year ago, Investopedia estimated that the life expectancy of a holiday would cost $179,109.

Pet Owner: $39,381

Two-thirds of American households have pets, and most of us consider our furry friends to be important pieces of American dreams.

The diagram above shows the lifetime costs of owning one dog and one cat, including food and health care.

Wedding: $38,200

More than half of Americans say that weddings are part of American dreams. Interestingly, wedding costs have actually been declining since 2024.

A total of $38,200 covers ceremony, reception and rings.

She is the CEO and founder of a nonprofit hero like you, a faith-based clothing brand, and a ministry project called Biblein365, and says her bio is “trying to help individuals engage in the Bible every day.”

She is also the host of the “Rising Throughout the Week” podcast, describing it as “a series of prayers focused on Bible leadership and empowering others to lead with integrity and purpose.” On her podcasts and as a regular feature beside her husband, Erica Kirk publicly defends the same political and biblical views as her husband, focusing on young women in particular.

According to a report from the Republic of Arizona, the USA Today Network’s The Arizona Republic, she encouraged women to marry young and have children, including delaying career aspirations. Together with her husband, they pushed traditional gender roles, entrusted men with spiritual leadership of their families, providing financially and physically protecting their wives and children.

How did Erica and Charlie Kirk meet?

According to Fox News, Erika and Charlie Kirk met in 2018, and the two had a “very long dinner,” conservative activists said in a video shared on the Turning Point YouTube page.

WASHINGTON – The FBI recorded current White House border emperor Tom Homan and accepted $50,000 in cash last year during a secret investigation that was removed by the Trump administration last year.

Homan accepted the money after the executives suggested that agents could help posing to win government contracts in the second Trump terminology, MSNBC reported, citing familiar sources and internal documents.

The encounter has led to Homan, the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Trump’s first term, to be investigated for bribery and other potential crimes.

Under the Trump administration, Justice Department officials have shut down the investigation because they suspected that ju judges who agreed to certain actions in exchange for cash could be convinced, the outlet reported.

Neither the White House nor the FBI denied in a statement that the Homan investigation had occurred.

“The issue occurred under previous administrations and was subject to a full review by FBI agents and Department of Justice prosecutors. They found no reliable evidence of criminal misconduct,” a joint statement by FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

“Sector resources must focus on real threats to Americans, not on unfounded investigations. As a result, investigations are closed.”

President Donald Trump told reporters that he left the White House for dinner that night and that he was unaware of the report.

White House Deputy Press Office Abigail Jackson investigated the investigation as “did not acknowledging evidence of illegal activities” in a statement accusing him of using DOJ resources to target Trump resources “as opposed to investigating real criminals.”

“Tom Homan has not been involved in determining the contract award. He is a career law enforcement officer and lifelong civil servant who has done incredible jobs on behalf of President Trump and the country,” she said.

Homan did not respond to USA Today’s request for comment.

Pros, online, private parties, etc.

If you need to remove a used car, there are a few options. Each has its own list of pros and cons.

Ultimately, experts said the way you decide to unload a used car depends on how much money you want to make and how much you want to spend. If you choose to trade it at a car dealership, it is the easiest way to get rid of it, but it may not bring about most of the money.

Another option is to sell it personally. This obviously requires more effort. Alternatively, you can sell it on used car sites such as Carmax. You can also donate to charities.

“I don’t know if there’s one best way. It depends on your personality. Maybe you don’t want to come to your house or go down the street to meet them. “If you have time to post online and deal with a lot of tire kickers, it’s great. You might get more money from the dealer.”

Step 1: Know your value

The first step in selling your car is to see what your car is worth. In doing so, no matter how you choose to sell, you sell at the right value, Undercoffler said.

Many tools online can help with this, such as Kelley Blue Book trade-in and private parties value. Edmunds.com offers used car value tools, Carvana has value lacquer, and Carmax offers evaluation tools and Cargurus instant market value tools online, listing some. Most offer trade-in value and private party value.

Undercoffler recommends “triangulation” to sellers and uses several sites to get the most accurate price in your mind.

“A lot of them give you value differently depending on whether you trade it and sell it yourself… But you’re with these sites supporting you,” Underkoffler said. “It gives the seller a lot of confidence.”

Ivan Drury of Edmunds.com agreed and suggested another step. He said that even if you plan to sell your vehicle to a private party, you’ll take it to a few car dealers and see what you’ll offer in addition to running it through an online rating tool.

“At least that’s how you know the bottom dollar you can expect,” said Drury, director of insights at edmunds.com. “Maybe it’s more lined up or more than anyone who wants to spend time in the private market.”

Important steps to selling your car to a private party

Both, if you really want to maximize your money and sell it personally, I agree, so let’s take a look at the process first.

“Dealers are in business to make money, so they need to know that they can buy it and turn it around and sell it for profit,” Underkoffler said. “But there’s no free lunch. It takes time and effort to sell it yourself.”

Undercoffler first recommends that cars be sold to private parties that can be done on websites such as www.iseecars.com. If you sell it to a dealer, they can clean it and fix any dings and dents so don’t spend money on it as you won’t take back that cost, he said.

Drury said it’s also important to make sure your paperwork is going well. There are as many records as possible for maintenance and repairs. Also, make sure your registration, liability release, title (or lien payment amount), automotive department forms, and other forms are up to date.

It is also important to ensure that potential buyers have paperwork in order and are legal.

“I want to know who you’re dealing with, but make sure that the person who appears on the test drive is the same person you were in contact with and check your ID.

Test drive and payment

Undercoffler told me not to let anyone take your car on a test drive without you and not to make sure they have insurance.

Please let people you trust, let them know when, where, and who are meeting, and more details, especially if you are meeting anywhere other than your home, Drury added.

If the buyer requires that it be deployed in advance, it is up to you to respond to the request. Undercoffler said he is buying and selling many classic cars, and said advance inspections are common.

“You’ll settle it and drive to a garage where potential buyers pay for inspection,” Undercoffler said. “But if they’re having problems, you have to be fine with that. Do you want to spend another $500 to fix it? What’s the final game for you?”

Let’s find your buyer and say they’re good for the vehicle, and now it’s time to pay. This is when cash is always king.

“Be smart about it, where you’re doing business, you have someone with you,” Underkoffler said. “But cash or cashier checks are good. Anyone who offers electronic stuff that I feel bad.”

If Drury accepts cash, they either buy one of those counterfeit detection markers or “even better, they go straight to the bank and involve the counter. Payments by checks also pose a risk.

If you’re not getting a bite, Drury said he has time limits in mind as he doesn’t want the vehicle to continue to devalue, hoping that he’ll get more to sell it to a private party.

Why not sell your car to a private party

Drury said you should probably not sell your car personally if you have the following characteristics: It’s better to take the vehicle to your dealer, Carmax, or send it to an online retailer.

  • Trust issues: You either trust too much or you don’t trust anyone. Drury said that selling the Private Party requires a balance of trust and skepticism.
  • Time management issues: To sell a car, you need an open schedule and it can be difficult to meet the buyer’s schedule. Also, “Expect people to flake you,” Drury said.
  • know: You know all the details about your vehicle and may focus on certain features or facts that the buyer may not care about as a selling point or may not be looking at.
  • I know it’s too little:If you don’t have a service record or if you are the third owner and are unable to answer the buyer’s questions, please get a vehicle history report.
  • Bad Poker Face: You negotiate. Buyers want a fair amount and you want the best dollars, but neither extreme is a good thing for both parties, so prepare accordingly.
  • Patience or lack of it: Getting the documents, winning the title if the vehicle still has a lien, and waiting in line in the bank and auto department can be pissed.
  • Rear seat driver: “If you can’t help with advice while driving, or if you can get motion sickness while someone else is driving, then the buyer might want someone else to sit while driving,” Drury said.

Notes on donations

You’ve probably heard an ad on the radio. In particular, I have heard ads broadcasting on listeners’ donations and donated second-hand cars.

Drury said the donation makes sense for those who don’t want to absolutely have to go through the hassle of getting rid of their cars.

“But again, I would recommend that you discuss going this route and speak to an accountant to certainly discuss what will happen to each individual, as the overall impact on the value you declared, the actual value and what you owe can very differently,” Drury said.

Regarding where your car goes, Drury said the vehicle may go to classes at a local high school or community college auto store.

If you don’t want to do that, you can sell it via the website to Cargurus, Carvana, etc., but again, you probably won’t get much money to sell it personally, the expert said.

Older cars are also worth the money

The final option is to bring it to the car dealership and leave it there and go home, or spend money on trading in for a new car.

“Trade in is a great negotiation tool,” Undercoffler said. “And don’t think it’s worth it because your car has a lot of miles and age.”

He said high interest rates are in high demand for used cars with high value.

“It’s a low-cost car that dealers can’t get enough,” Undercoffler said. “So don’t underestimate its value to dealers and consumers.”

Does the FCC chair prefer freedom of speech?

0

FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr was a proponent of freedom of speech. Take a look at his social media posts. But he has problems with Jimmy Kimmel.

play

Do you know how past social media posts can go back and annoy you? FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr does so.

Carr is also facing criticism as he puts pressure on ABC to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Not only from the airwaves, but there is also the reappearance of his own previous online posts that the FCC should not regulate the content of his speeches on television. The liberals on social media are pleased to focus on Kerr’s obvious hypocrisy. Among them was former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, who posted on Facebook: “For Maga, it is clear that protecting freedom of speech has always been secondary to wielding the power to punish anyone who doubts this administration.”

Kerr, who has been appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates television, radio and communications, appears to be threatening ABC with the network’s parent Disney company, Kimmel, over a late-night host’s monologue, including the September 10 murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

An episode of commentator Benny Johnson’s YouTube show on September 17th called on Disney and individual ABC affiliates to take action against Kimmel.

“This is a very serious problem for Disney right now. We can do this in an easy or difficult way,” Kerr said. “We need to see some changes here, but the individual license stations getting content is when they step up and say this, and to some degree, it’s the trash can that’s going down the pipe in the future, isn’t something we think will cater to the needs of our community.”

“We need to fire Kimmel,” he added. “I think you can certainly see the path for a stop through this.”

Later that day, ABC announced that Kimmel’s late-night talk show would be “indefinitely ahead of time.”

Kimmel claimed on September 15th that the “Magagang” were “doing everything they could to score political points.” He also criticized Trump for lamenting the death of his allies, comparing them to “the way a four-year-old child grieves goldfish.”

Kerr may have had problems with Kimmel’s comments, but in the past he has publicly defended freedom of speech. USA Today contacted the chairman’s office for comment, but did not hear about it early on Saturday evening.

When Kerr was the FCC commissioner in 2019, he tweeted his opposition to the USA Today opinion column written by then-FCC chairman Jessica Rosenwartle.

However, Kerr opposed the basis for free speech. “Do you not like the government’s censorship speech? Of course it’s not,” said Carr’s post on February 14, 2019. “The FCC does not have a roving mission to police speeches in the name of “public interest.”

Others have found Carr’s statement and have provided their own commentary over the last few days. “This is old,” one poster pointed out.

“How do you get a tweet? You guys are so bad,” another person posted.

Before Disney took the Kimmel show ahead, media company Nexstar, which has 32 ABC stations, said it would pull out the program.

Carr’s FCC is considering acquiring fellow Nexstar broadcaster Tegna. Approval requires lifting station ownership restrictions that prohibit broadcasters from reaching more than 39% of national audiences. The FCC will also consider acquiring Disney-owned ESPN’s NFL network.

It’s not just liberals and free speech advocates who are concerned about the move against Kimmel. Some conservatives have also expressed concern that the Trump administration will stifle freedom of speech in order to silence Kirk’s critics.

“It’s a quick mafia coming in the bar. “A lovely bar here. It’s a shame if something happens,” the Republican senator from Texas said on his own podcast on September 19th.

What did FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr say about freedom of speech?

Kerr frequently posts in favor of free speech. An hour after being appointed FCC chair by Trump in 2024, Carr said in X that he “must dismantle the censored cartel and restore the rights of everyday Americans to free speech.”

Carr supports freedom of speech in his additional X post. “Free speech is a counterweight. It’s a check on government control. That’s why censorship is an authoritarian dream,” he posted on December 30, 2023.

Previously, in 2021, Carr posted that messaging platform Discord’s ban on servers related to GameStop stock prices amounted to censorship. “Less speech means more power to established gatekeepers,” his post read.

Critics like Colbert call Carr’s hypocrisy

On the September 18 episode of “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the host referenced some of Carr’s posts, saying that Carr “represents a serious threat to the freedom and ability of those in power to be held accountable, particularly in the promotion of those targeted or threatened by that message.”

Such comments appeared to be against the actions taken against Kimmel, Colbert suggested.

“Yeah, don’t tell Brendan Kerr that Brendan Kerr said.

Why Nissan cuts next-generation leaf EV production by more than half

0

Japanese automakers produce less than half of the leaf models more than originally intended.

play

  • Nissan currently produces two EVs for North America. Nissan Leaf electric vehicle and Aliya electric SUV.
  • The upcoming leaves are a big part of our plans for 2026.

Nissan Motor has significantly reduced production plans for its latest generation of Leaf electric vehicle nameplate, according to Reuters.

Nissan has been rocky over the past few years due to poor sales, management issues and a failed merger with Honda. Japanese automakers have fought to survive some of the harsh imports and tariffs. Now it appears the company’s plans to produce a more modern version of the leaf electric vehicle has been caught.

Nissan is already cutting new leaves production before the EV hits the street

Nissan Leaf electric vehicles are very affordable EVs, and are in a decent range of prices (from $28,140). Nissan is introducing a third-generation leaf EV with a “SUV-like stance.” This repetition of the leaves features a new exterior design, which looks completely different from its predecessor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvz2knff1a4

The idea for the new Nissan Leaf generation was exciting for car enthusiasts and brand fans. This is because the company has yet to create true rivals for sales leaders in the EV space, including the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Hyundai Ionti 5. Furthermore, previous Leaf generations have proven that Nissan people know how to produce EVs that don’t break banks.

Due to a lack of battery, Nissan will reduce the output of next-generation leaves “more than half of September to November.” Nissan “is betting on a new version of its leaf model to bring it back,” says Reuters.

What’s the newest Nissan Leaf for 2026?

According to the company, the 2026 Nissan Leaf, scheduled for release in the second half of 2025, includes many “Nissan First Features.”

New features of the Nissan Leaf

  • North American Charging Standard (NACS) Port with Plug and Charge Function
  • Dimmable roofs available with heat shield
  • 3D holographic tail light
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

Perhaps the most notable new feature is the new NACS port. This means that 2026 Leaf owners can charge their EVs with Tesla Superchargers. This is a game changer, as NACS chargers are usually more accessible than Tesla’s large supercharger network.

Leaf’s main product specialist Keiji Endo had a specific vision for the new Leaf, as mentioned in the EV introduction video.

Why is the 2026 Nissan Leaf so important to the brand’s portfolio?

Several major automakers have all-in EVs. From American companies like Ford to Korean brands like Hyundai Motor Company, there is no shortage of automakers producing competitive electric vehicle nameplates.

Even companies that initially resisted the production of electric vehicles, such as Toyota, have begun to restructure their portfolios to include attractive models. Nissan’s sustainability as a brand depends on several factors. First, interest in bestseller nameplates must remain strong. Next, Japanese car manufacturers need to look to the future. This is the next generation of leaf ideas.

According to Nissan, the upcoming 2026 Leaf will start at $29,990. Available in S, S+, SV+ and Platinum+ trim.

The S+ has a driving range of 303 miles. Nissan’s next-generation leaf could become a grand slam for the company if the paper value proposition is translated into the real world.

Trump is seeking a $100,000 fee on an H-1B visa. What do you know

0

Employment tends to concentrate in the STEM sector, with workers overwhelmingly coming from India.

play

The special visa, which President Donald Trump currently faces a fee of $100,000, has long been favored by Silicon Valley to attract engineers.

On September 19, Trump declared that the H-1B non-immigrant visa program was “deliberately misused” to replace American workers with low-paid, less skilled workers. To address this, Trump said he has introduced a $100,000 application fee for businesses applying for H-1B visas, with the discretion of Homeland Security Secretary Christie Norm to exempt workers. Research shows that visa workers complement American workers due to different skill sets.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said everything “with big companies on board,” but the H-1B is essential to the country’s high-tech industry, and Trump’s fees are likely to face legal challenges. Here’s what you need to know about the H-1B visa:

How do people qualify for H-1B?

The visa category allows employers to perform in “professional” – at least a bachelor’s degree – according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, seeking highly educated workers.

Before employers can file USCIS petitions, foreign workers must show that foreign workers do not harm American workers, the U.S. Immigration Council, an advocacy group for immigration advocacy groups, said in a 2024 fact sheet. This will prove via the Department of Labor that H-1B workers do not affect wages or working conditions for similar American workers, USCIS said. Existing workers should also be notified of the company’s plan to hire visa workers.

How much is the visa?

According to USCIS, people are usually allowed for up to three years, but can be extended to six years. There are other options to extend your visa, such as obtaining an approved immigration visa petition based on an employment-based category for individuals with exceptional abilities.

How many H-1Bs are awarded each year?

The federal government will limit the new H-1B visas to 65,000 and add 20,000 visas for those who have earned a master’s degree or higher from higher education institutions in the United States.

The majority of H-1B approvals come from updated applications, says Pew Research Center. Of the approximately 400,000 approvals for 2024, nearly two-thirds have been updated.

What kind of work do H-1B workers do?

According to the American Council on Immigration, employment tends to be concentrated in the STEM field.

USCIS data shows that Amazon has the most H-1B visa approved this year, with over 10,000 people approved. Microsoft, Meta and Indian IT Company’s Tata each had over 5,000 visas approved, with Apple and Google each with over 4,000 visas.

Scientific researchers and medical professionals are also often H-1B visa holders. The U.S. Immigration Council has received H-1B approval for 3,310 Biophysists, Chemist, Sciences, Scienceists, Scienceists, Scienceists, Chemist, Checryists, Checryists, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist, Chemist According to a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, applicants for the H-1B visa accounted for 1.4% of all practice physicists.

Where do people come from?

According to Pew, almost three H-1B workers are coming from India. On September 20, India’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the costs of the new US could have “humanitarian consequences” by disrupting families.

China sends the largest number of H-1B workers, next to H-1B workers, at around 12%. The rest of the world accounts for around 16% of H-1B workers.

In a statement on September 20th, Nasscom, India’s industry association for high-tech industries, said Trump’s change could have “ripple effects” on American innovation and the wider employment economy.

It’s time to brighten it up.

AJ Lee won the WWE after resigning from wrestling 10 years ago. Lee made a comeback with the September 5th edition on Smackdown and joined her husband’s commercial punk in her hometown of Chicago.

Her return to wrestling is something fans hoped for for years. Known for her volatile persona and her elite promotional skills and signature skip, Lee is considered one of the best wrestlers of the early 2010s. She has consistently been at the top of the women’s category, a three-time diva champion and is most ruler-bound in what was once the top women’s title. She retired in 2015.

Cena’s time is pretty much there as the 2025 farewell tour is the final few months. In the final year of competition in the ring, Cena won the uncontroversial WWE Championship with the Elimination Chamber, becoming the first 17-time title holder in WWE history.

Wrestlepalooza recorded its 31st appearance in 2025, with 36 being promised for the final year of wrestling, so there are only five shows left at Cena after the show. His career will peak in the main event on Saturday night, December 13th.

His next appearance will not be until October 11th of WWE Crown Jewel: Perth. The remaining dates for his final run are as follows:

  • October 11th: WWE Crown Jewel: Perth (Australia, Perth)
  • November 10th: RAW (Boston, Massachusetts)
  • November 17th: RAW (New York, New York)
  • November 29th: Survivor Series (San Diego, California)

Trump says he fired us ny ag letitia investigate James

Trump said he has retracted Eric Siebert’s appointment to US lawyers for the Eastern District of Virginia.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he investigated New York Attorney General Letitia James and fired a U.S. lawyer a few hours after he signaled his complaints with prosecutors.

Trump said he has retracted Eric Sheebert’s appointment for U.S. lawyers for the Eastern District of Virginia over “unusually strong support” from state Democrats.

“He didn’t quit, I fired him! Next time I let him go as a Democrat, not a Republican,” Trump wrote in a post on True Society on September 20.

According to the New York Times, Washington Post and other outlets, he was overseeing a criminal mortgage investigation into James before he left the Post Friday after Trump asked him to be removed from work.

Sheebert had informed the Department of Justice that there was insufficient evidence to pursue the charges against James, the outlet reported. He also raised concerns about another lawsuit against former FBI director James Comey.

In addition to handling the mortgage fraud investigation against James, Siebert’s office is also involved in Comey’s criminal investigation in connection with past probes of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“I want him,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Siebert later said in an email obtained by the outlet that he had resigned.

“For the past eight months, I have been able to lead the best and most exceptional of DOJ employees who have a deep interest in our country and the EDVA community,” he writes. “I appreciate the lessons you taught me, the sacrifices you have made, and the pursuit of justice you strive for every day.”

Siebert was first appointed interim US attorney in January, and was later appointed by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia after his temporary appointment expired. Trump previously nominated him to be confirmed by the Republican-controlled US Senate.

Two Virginia Democrat Senators, Tim Kane and Mark Warner, supported his nomination.

They said in a September 19 statement that Trump pushed Siebert out as “a ethical prosecutor who refused to file criminal charges against Trump’s perceived enemies when the facts didn’t support it.”

“The Eastern District of Virginia is at the forefront of important cases that are essential to our national security, and like American courts, we should focus on justice instead of revenge on light-skinned presidents,” the senator wrote.

Trump has tried to clean up the Justice Department, which is deemed dishonest because he uses US government agencies to target political rivals.

James is one of at least three civil servants facing investigation into mortgage fraud, along with Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California and Democrat Sen. Lisa Cook, a Democrat appointee Trump has tried to fire. All three deny fraud.

As a member of the House, Schiff led the first bluff against Trump to withhold aid from Ukraine to pressure him to carry out the political favors of President Voldime Zelensky. Schiff also joined the committee that investigated the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.

Trump repeatedly complained about James. The New York judge in the case discovered that Trump and his family business had fraudulently inflated the value of his assets, but last month the New York Court of Appeals abandoned the penalty while maintaining a fraud case against him.

The investigation into James was caused by Chief Bill Palt, a federal housing finance agency who allegedly misdescribed his home in Norfolk, Virginia as a primary residence in order to secure a more favorable interest rate on his mortgage. Palt also said James may have inaccurately described the Brooklyn home.

James’ attorney, Abbe Lowell, repeatedly denied that she had done something wrong and accused DOJ of seeking retaliation against her for the civil lawsuit she brought against Trump.

The 2025 Acura ADX SUV does not support its luxurious branding

0

play

  • This Acura model is a Subcompact Luxury SUV that shares basic engineering with Honda’s HR-V.
  • To create a luxurious ride, you need more than just lovely paint and interior materials.

After living with them for a few days and as the models evolve, they share the impressions of the new vehicle.

This week’s car

2025 ACURA ADX A-Spec Advance

What is it?

This Acura model is a Subcompact Luxury SUV that shares basic engineering with Honda’s HR-V. The power comes from a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. A variable automatic transmission is the standard on a continuous basis.

how much?

Prices start from $35,000. All prices exclude a $1,350 placement fee. Tested on the top line ADX A-Spec Advanced I TEST STICTERED 44,600.

How are you?

ADX participated in the Acura lineup this year. Until July, there were 6,593 sales.

When I first drove it, what I thought: Describing my day driving in California earlier this year, I wrote:

  • ADX arrives with excellent qualifications using the same architecture and drivetrain as Acura’s award-winning Integra Compact Sport Sedan.
  • ADX controls are easy to use and understand.
  • The front seats are comfortable and have ample storage. The rear legroom is good, but the refined profile limits the rear headroom.
  • ADX needs more power and better acceleration. Acura needs to address the issue if you want ADX to be the true stability of a fun and responsive Integra.

What does that compete with?

Audi Q3, BMW X2, Lexus NX, Mini Countryman, Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40.

What I like: My ADX interior was 1980s yachtlock light blue and trimmed in high-end leather with accent suede. A refreshing departure from the gorgeous interior of sad black and grey. The audio on the Bang & Olufsen 15 speakers sounds good at slow speeds, but engine, road and wind noise reduces its effect more quickly.

The exterior design is modest and comfortable. The small size of the ADX makes parking easier.

Even ADX’s recommended 91 octane petrol will not sneeze with AWD and 27 MPG in city/highway combined driving.

Maybe better: There’s nothing special about ADX performance, comfort or technology. It could come from a capable mainstream brand. ADX cannot justify premium prices or branding.

Additionally, the electronic start or key FOB malfunctioned during the week with ADX, and I had to press the start button on the FOB. It was an intermittent drawback – it was a word that occurred twice, sending words that would make the owner’s spines cold. Battery issues were eliminated as the FOB operated the fine operating lock and the power tailgate from afar.

I’m not sure: Whether Honda develops higher aspirations for luxury brands.

The ADX will be a great Hyundai or Nissan. Probably VW.

But to create a luxurious ride, you need more than just lovely paint and interior materials. ADX’s performance, technology and refinement, despite its lovely interior and easy-to-use controls, all fall short of the standards set by other premium and luxury brands.

Important numbers for ADX

  • The base price is $35,000, excluding destination charges
  • 5 seats 5
  • Front or all-wheel drive
  • 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, continuous fluctuation automatic transmission. 190 HP, 179 pound-feet of torque.
  • Estimated fuel economy: 25 mpg city/30 expressway/27 union.

New York mayor’s request will prohibit the ban on horse-drawn carriages in Central Park

0

NYC’s leading mayoral candidates agree to a horse drawn on a horse that poses an outdated threat in one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations.

play

NEW YORK – New York City mayoral candidates disagree very much. But the bitter enemies of the busy fields are united to ban iconic horse-drawn carriages in Central Park.

The carriage has long been scrutinized by critics for the inhumane treatment of horses and the issues of inhumane treatment and safety, especially when a 1,000-pound animal is frightened and charged. The mayor’s attempts to ban tourist attractions have been curtailed for years from opposition from unions representing the carriers and owners denying allegations of animal abuse.

Currently, all major candidates agree that horse-drawn carriages pose an outdated threat, one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Supporters will see new champions for their cause, anyone who will lead the nation’s biggest city after the general election on November 4th.

“While horse carriages have long been iconic equipment for Central Park, they are increasingly inconsistent with the conditions of modern, heavily used urban green spaces,” Mayor Eric Adams, who is facing a dimly lit prospect of reelection, said in a statement on September 17.

Adams recently supported a law restricting new licensing for horse-drawn carriages before banning them in 2026.

Some oppose Adams’ support for banning carriages

Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union, representing the transport owners and drivers, said Adams blinded them.

John Samuelsen, international chairman of the Transportation Union, calls Adams “Straight Judas Iscariot.” He called him “selling his soul” to developers who wanted to build a place where carriage stables sit on a major property on the west side of Manhattan.

Others, including New York City Council leadership, saw Adams’ support for the bill as opportunistic in his first four-year term for more than three years.

“The bill continues to go through a legislative process that is deliberative and allows for thorough input from all stakeholders,” City Council spokesman Benjamin Vanestrada said in a statement.

“It’s time to really get this done,” says former mayor of Bill de Blasio.

Former mayor Bill de Blasio, who campaigned in 2013 on a promise to ban horse carriages, celebrated Adams’ announcement. “It’s time to really get this done,” de Blasio said on X on Wednesday, September 17th.

Democrat de Blasio supports Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate and presumed frontrunner, according to polls.

Mamdani supported the ban earlier this year. He called his career “inhuman and unnecessary,” according to a survey of candidates obtained by USA Today.

Recently, after losing to Mamdani in the summer Democratic primary, Andrew Cuomo’s former government, which follows the polls, declared “free the horse.”

“The carriage rides depicted on horses are part of the city’s romantic image, but in 2025 we must face facts about how outdated, unsafe and potentially inhumane the customs have become,” he said in a statement on September 19.

The carriages in Central Park were “means of transportation.”

New York is in the background of the times compared to other world cities that banned carriages, said Edita Barunkrant, executive director of New Yorkers in Clean, Living and Safe Streets, a pro-protection organization.

Central Park was opened to the public in 1858 before the existence of cars and even subways. “There were no other means of transportation,” Birnkrant told USA Today. “In 2025, we don’t match Central Park and the city.”

Birnkrant pointed to a significant shift by the Central Park Conservancy, a nonprofit that manages green spaces, urging formal opposition to carriages in the park.

The ban is a matter of public health and safety for frequent visitors to Central Park at a record level, Elizabeth Smith, the sanctuary president and CEO, wrote in an August 12 letter to Mayor Adams and City Council Chairman Adrian Adams. “It’s time,” the letter says.

On Thursday, September 18th, Curtis Sliwa, a Republican candidate in a red beret who also runs on the independent line of “Protect Animals,” said there was news that all major candidates support the ban. Sliwa urged all major candidates to stand together along the city hall stairs and call for a ban.

Tropical Storm Gabriel will be a hurricane by Sunday. See Tracker.

Tropical Storm Gabriel continues to be strengthened as it moves across the Atlantic, along with predictors who hope the storm will become a hurricane by Sunday.

The storm is expected to reach hurricane strength when passing east of Bermuda from Sunday night, given the name Gabriel on September 17th, said in an update on Saturday, September 20th at 11am.

Gabriel will be located on Saturday about 615 miles southeast of Bermuda and 540 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Montserrat and St. Martin. Currently, the storm is producing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph in gusts, but is expected to be gradually strengthened.

Bermuda is beginning to experience swells created by Gabriel, with construction expected over the weekend, likely leading to life-threatening surfing and current conditions, the Hurricane Centre said.

The swell is expected to strike beaches along the Atlantic coast, from North Carolina and the North to the Canadian Atlantic coast. The swells can cause the current state of life-threatening surfing and ripping, which can lead to the current state that begins later this weekend, according to the NHC.

The NHC warned the people of Bermudan to expect wind and rain from Gabriel.

Gabriel became the seventh name storm in the Atlantic Basin this year, and the first name storm in the Atlantic since August 28th.

The illustrations include an array of prediction tools and models, not all are created equal. Hurricane Centers can help you make predictions using only the top four or five top performance models.

The Hurricane Centre is also tracking tropical waves in the eastern Atlantic Ocean off the coast of western Africa, which predictors say may develop slowly. However, predictors have reduced the likelihood of formation until the next seven days.

The Hurricane Center also monitors two systems in the Eastern Pacific, with different possibilities for it to develop into tropical suppression over the next few days.

Located hundreds of miles south of Mexico’s southern coast, NHC said, “a wide area with low pressure” will create a wide area of organized showers and thunderstorms, which will likely lead to tropical depression.

The system travels west-northwest at 5-10 mph parallel to the country’s coast, so it could develop over the next 48 hours, with a great opportunity in the next seven days.

Another system labelled to track it as the Invest 96L, located west of the Revillagigedo Islands (south of Cabo San Lucas), has weakened over the past 12 hours, with the anti-disruption being expected to be less likely to develop in the next 48 hours.

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes originate in the tropical regions above warm waters. Thunderstorm clusters can develop across the ocean when the water temperature exceeds 80 degrees. If conditions are correct, clusters are swirling into tropical waves and storms known as tropical depression.

Tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm when its sustained wind speed reaches 39 mph. When the wind reaches 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Get ready for a hurricane now

Delaying preparations to potentially save lives could mean waiting until it’s too late. “Get disaster supply while the shelves are still in stock and flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period, so get that insurance inspection early,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends.

  • Establish an evacuation plan. If you are at risk from a hurricane, you will need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to plan where you will go and how you will get there.
  • Assemble disaster supply. Whether you’re evacuated or not, you’ll need supplies not only to get through the storm, but perhaps for the long aftermath, NOAA said.
  • Get an insurance inspection and document your property. Contact your insurance company or agent now to ask for an insurance inspection to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or replace your home or belongings. Remember that housing and tenant insurance doesn’t cover floods, so you’ll need individual insurance for them. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or through your national flood insurance program.
  • Create a family communication plan. NOAA says you should take the time to write down your hurricane plans and share them with your family. Determine where family gatherings are to be met and include out-of-town locations in case of evacuation.
  • It strengthens your home. Now is the time to improve the home’s ability to withstand hurricanes. Fit the wood, attach storm shutters, accordion shutters, and impact glass to seal the outside of the wall opening.
