The IRS Schedule 1-A form includes qualifying tips and overtime deductions

  • The IRS is developing a new Schedule 1-A that you can use to claim new deductions for tip income, overtime pay, car loan interest, and 65 new tax credits for older people.
  • The IRS and the Treasury will provide new guidance on nearly 70 occupations subject to “no tax on tips.”
  • According to the new guidance, if the customer does not have the option to ignore or change it, if the customer does not have the option to ignore or change it, if the tip is automatically added, then there is no amount distributed to the workers.

Taxpayers who want to claim attractive new income tax credits packed into one big beautiful bill law must keep a record. And prepare to submit yet another form to claim tax deductions, including tips, overtime pay, and car loan interest.

An initial draft copy of the new two-page federal income tax form, called Schedule 1-A, was released by the Internal Revenue Service.

Schedule 1-A will be filed on the 2025 federal income tax return that will be filled out next year.

All four new deductions are available, whether or not they itemize the deduction or claim a standard deduction, such as by a qualified taxpayer claiming interest on a mortgage.

However, income and other restrictions also apply to these limited tax credits currently in place from 2025 to 2028.

As the end of the year approaches, you will want to track a long list of details related to these tax cuts. The Schedule 1-A draft contains some details.

For example, it includes where you need to list the vehicle identification numbers associated with the vehicle loan being charged to request a new deduction for your car loan on your 2025 tax return filed next year. To claim tax cuts on the 2025 return, you will need to take out your car loan in 2025 and buy a new car at the final US rally. The tax credit does not apply to car loans taken to buy used cars – or there are no new cars or new trucks with final gatherings outside the US.

Elderly people are looking at seven lines in their draft schedule related to “enhancing deductions for seniors.” People over the age of 65 may insist on an additional $6,000 deduction starting with a 2025 return. However, high-income seniors will receive a lower tax deduction or no tax deduction as they are phased out for people with adjusted gross income of $75,000 for singles and $150,000 for joint filers.

We are considering new “below” tax credits

All four tax credits created in one big beautiful bill law signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4th will be treated as something called the “deduction below.”

What it means: you will be able to reduce your taxable income. But when you claim these special deductions, you will not reduce your adjusted gross income, said Tom Osaben, registered agent and director of tax content and government relations for the National Association of Tax Professionals.

On the line? Under the line? It all sounds like someone is ready to cross some lines. However, distinctions are essential in the tax universe.

Early on, some experts initially thought that some new deductions from the mega tax bill could outweigh the tax credits that were made. But they are not.

What is the difference? It’s not like heaven and Hades. But that’s close. For many people, the lineage is better. Below, it’s not so comfortable for some.

The following deductions (how car loan interest, tips, and other new breaks are handled) are subtracted once the adjusted gross income has been determined. It won’t reduce your AGI and won’t help you take advantage of some credits and other tax cuts.

Generally, Osaben noted that on-line deductions are often more valuable as they are likely to qualify for other tax credits and benefits that reduce adjusted gross income and phase out once a higher AGI level is reached.

“While it’s not an advantage over the above deductions because we haven’t reduced AGI, Mark Ruscom, principal analyst for Crewer Tax & Lessons in Riverwood, Illinois, said:

Currently, only about 10% of taxpayers are itemizing deductions. Most people advocate the standard deduction.

Therefore, the news is welcome that “no tax on tips”, car loan interest deductions, and other new deductions will not only apply to those who make items.

But if you’re hoping to lower your AGI by claiming one of these new big beautiful invoice tax deductions, forget about it.

O’Saben said the AGI could lift some additional tax benefits.

Your ability to claim deductions like medical expenses depends heavily on your AGI. If the IRS points out to tax deductions for taxable years, these costs may be able to deduct medical and dental expenses paid to a range of more than 7.5% of your annual adjusted total income. A low AGI makes it easier to cross the threshold.

Additionally, contribution limits or deductibility for IRAS and other retirement plans are AGI dependent. High AGIs can increase the costs of Medicare Part B and D Premium.

Taxpayers have already calculated their adjusted gross income and have deducted deductions of 1040 or less when they request itemized deductions, such as standard deductions or mortgage interest or charitable contributions.

Details about “No tax on tips” and more.

As tax season approaches, we hear more clarifications about how taxpayers can expect to claim tips, overtime, seniors and new deductions on car loan interest.

According to Luscombe, Draft Schedule 1-A shows different requirements for each new deduction. Some of this will appear in the calculation itself in the form.

“The Schedule 1-A instructions have not been released yet and may provide additional helpful guidance,” Luscombe said.

What are the “cash tips” eligible for the new tax credit?

For example, some clarity was released on September 19 by the IRS and the Treasury Department on how some tips will be handled.

Tax cuts apply to cash tips rather than gifts received. However, the Treasury spelled that these tips could be given by checks, credit cards, debit cards, and even gift cards, and still counted as “cash tips.”

According to Treasury officials, casino chips whose tips count towards tax deductions cover specific or intangible tokens that can be easily exchanged for fixed amounts in cash.

Most digital assets, such as Bitcoin, do not count as cash tips that can be claimed under the new tax credits. These digital assets fluctuate in value constantly.

The general definition of “cash tip” in this tax credit easily includes tokens in “can be exchanged for a fixed amount of cash.”

As a result, new digital currencies known as Stablecoins are subject to deductions as they tend to be exchanged for fixed amounts because they do not see fluctuating values. Stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency that is related to the value of an asset, such as the US dollar.

The Treasury also made it clear that these tips should be taken as part of a legal transaction. This is not a illegal act such as prostitution. The Treasury says hints related to pornographic activities are also not eligible for tax cuts.

You need to report tips to get a tax deduction

According to the IRS guidance, eligible tips should be reported on “Form W-2, Form 1099, or other designated statements provided to an individual or directly reported by an individual on Form 4137.”

Tip income must be reported at the time of return. Taxpayers will then need to fill out the form for an “additional deduction” and request the qualifying tip income received that year.

The maximum annual deduction for tip income is $25,000 per return.

Deductions reduce taxable income. According to the example of the Bipartisan Policy Center, $50,000 (a single taxpayer who earned $50,000 including $5,000) could save $600 on a new tax credit on tip income.

Employers must withhold taxes from each Social Security and Medicare salary, known as FICA or payroll tax. Workers should report all tips to their employers at least $20 in a month.

What jobs are eligible for a “no tax on tips” break?

The IRS and the US Treasury published an updated list of approximately 70 occupations that “received hints on a customary and regular basis” prior to December 31, 2024.

The recently released list includes bartenders, water taxi operators, home movers, golf caddies, valet attendants, casino dealers, clowns, pizza delivery drivers, hair stylists, shampoos and more.

In an update released on September 19th, the IRS and the Treasury indicated that qualified tips can be received from customers via tip pool.

As part of the September 19 news, the Treasury Department and the IRS noted that public comments can be submitted within 30 days through regulation. Comments on the proposed regulations will be paid by October 23rd.

Luscombe said the invitation to comment on the advanced income deduction indicates that the IRS is open to considering some additions to the occupation list of presumably qualified chip recipients.

What are the tips that you don’t qualify for a tax deduction?

And yes, all hints are not eligible for a “tax-free” break.

People with a higher income will have fewer or no tax credits depending on their income. Deductions related to tip taxes will be incrementally incrementally for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of over $150,000 if they exceed a single or $300,000 for married couples filing joint returns.

The “no tax on tips” deduction is not available to taxpayers who claim a married filing separately.

Taxpayers must include a valid Social Security number for returns.

What remains the same: According to the Ministry of Finance, hints are not eligible for deduction if received during a particular specific transaction or company, such as performing arts, health, track and field, or other professionals.

As we reported in early August, some Waitstaff in restaurants with mandatory tipping policies are shocked to discover that a large chunk of tipping revenue is not eligible for tax cuts.

According to sources from the Ministry of Finance, the hints require customers to pay voluntarily and are not subject to negotiation.

According to Treasury officials, automatic charging or disregarding discretion that customers do not have the discretion to change or ignore is not considered a “qualified” hint for tax credits. Tips are spontaneous and not essential.

Specifically, the IRS and the Treasury have mentioned examples of restaurants that automatically charge 18% service charges for large parties and distribute the amount to waiters, bathers and kitchen staff.

“If the customer does not have the option to ignore or change it, and if a claim is added, the amount distributed to the workers is not a qualifying hint,” according to guidance from the IRS and the Ministry of Finance issued September 19.

New special tax credits on tips are retroactive and apply to eligible tip income earned in all 2025 – back to January 1st.

Of course, the mega-tax bill was passed this summer, and many employers may not have updated their system to record tip income early in the year, hoping for new tax rules. Further guidance will advance for the interim tax year in which you will file your 2025 income tax return in 2026.

“Firing them on the spot” Live update of Trump Military Summit.

President Donald Trump said before heading to Kuncheongtio, Virginia, to address a group of top military generals, that if he doesn’t like them, he’ll “fire them on the spot.”

“If you don’t like anyone, I’ll fire them on the spot,” he said.

While Trump was preparing to leave Washington, his defense secretary was addressing a packed meeting of hundreds of military commanders in the Quantico auditorium. Defense Secretary Pete Hegses said he would oppose “collapse” at the Department of Defense, cracking down on physical fitness and grooming standards, and abandoning “awakening” policies.

“This speech is about correcting decades of collapse, some of which are obvious, some of which are hidden,” Hegses said.

“We’ve become a wake-up department, but it’s not like that anymore.”

Reflecting Trump’s threat, Hegses said that if senior executives did not resonate with his message, they should resign.

“If the words I’m speaking today sink your heart, you should do something honorable and resign.”

Hegseth has issued 10 new orders, including implementing physical fitness standards, bringing combat weapon positions to “highest male standards,” orders to shave and shorten their hair.

While the generals and admirals of the conference are not forced to take their own physical fitness tests, all members of the joint force must take a physical fitness test twice a year to meet the criteria for height and weight.

“We don’t talk about hot yoga and stretching,” added Heggs.

With just a week’s notice, Hegseth ordered a brigadier or all senior commanders in the ranks of the lower half or more to report to Virginia Base, about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C. President Donald Trump has announced that he will also speak to the general a few days before the meeting.

Defence experts said the base and the small towns it surrounds by the general’s top general and his aides are likely to create traffic snarling and security nightmares. From the day before the meeting, read the town’s announcement on Quantico’s Facebook page: “Residents can expect increased security checks, changes in traffic patterns and increases in security personnel.”

Costs for the meeting – Taking senior officers and their staff to Quantico, submitting them and securing a community could be millions of dollars, experts told USA Today.

“This kind of thing has never been done before, as it comes from all over the world. It doesn’t cost a little, but it costs a little,” Trump said of the unprecedented meeting.

Democrats and other critics have accused the meeting as a waste of money and said it was a bad idea to take the country’s top generals out of work for a Pep Larry-type event.

The meeting “supposes deep concerns about security, costs and operational impacts.” “Our enemy knows that many of our most senior commanders around the world are associated with some of the highest levels of the civilian chain of command,” said Senators Tammy Duckworth and Mazzy Hirono, who sat on the military committee.

  • There will be two unbeaten NFL teams and three unbeatable teams throughout the four weeks.
  • What does a Sunday night tie mean to the Packers, the Cowboys?
  • Who will replace the charger when it drops out of the top 5?

NFL Power Rankings (previous ranks in parentheses) that enter the fifth week of the 2025 season:

1. Philadelphia Eagles (1): They won 20 of their 21 games – one loss in the past year when QB Jalen Hurts accidentally suffered a concussion in Washington. Wait until they add a second half passing yard, add more tash push variations, and perhaps 3.1 yards per carry gets more from RB Saquon Barkley, almost half the 2024 rate (5.8).

2. Buffalo Bills (2): Come on Sunday night for the end of their three-game homestands – the AFC leader will not play again in Western New York until November. Staying on Buffalo’s “cold front” uniform debut.

3. LosAngeles Rams (4): QB Matthew Stafford’s back seems fine. The 88-yard TD pass, which won Sunday’s game, was the longest of his 17-year career – surpassing the 79-yard connection with Calvin “Megatron” Johnson and Van Jefferson in the previous season.

4. Green Bay Packers (5): Wasting a fourth quarter lead in consecutive weeks is not the best way to get into the goodbye week for a team that should be 4-0. What Matt Lafleur and Co. coaches really need to work on is their two-minute drill and the sense of urgency that appears to be inherent to overtime. Still, considering the way injuries accumulate here, the week’s break may arrive at the right time.

5. Detroit Lions (6): Back in his injury-related 2024 season, De Aidan Hutchinson has 11½ bags in his last nine games. He spent 17 games over 11½ during the 2023 season.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9): Certainly, they only suffered from the initial loss – they’ve come all the way back to knock off the Champion Eagles. Also. Ironically, it was Bucs’ first game in the lineup for the 2025 season with All-Pro LT Tristan Wire and WR Chris Godwin, and their returns seem to be listed just a few days ago for the NFC South Leaders.

7. LosAngeles Chargers (3): If Sunday showed how things could go without starting OTS Joe Alto and Rush Slater, QB Justin Herbert and Co. could be having some serious problems.

8. Kansas City Chiefs (10): Rumors of the end of the dynasty have been very exaggerated, with the defending AFC champion already being restored to seventh place in the meeting, with 0-2 quickly retreating.

9. Seattle Seahawks (12): Mike McDonald is the fifth coach in league history and has won at least nine of his first 10 games. “Imagine if the Hawks can regain the home field advantage they once managed to overcome at Lumenfield, 4-7 under McDonald’s.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers (14): When your offense gets a fourth yard and your defense surrenders the fourth most, you need to feel pretty good about a 3-1 start, especially in light of the problems facing the Pittsburgh AFC Northfords.

11. IndianapolisColts (11): Four punts on Sunday and the first three turnovers of the 2025 season? But if the wheels appear to have fallen off this Cinderella carriage at the same time, remember that Indy is likely two poor plays that will leave WR Adonai Mitchell from 4-0.

12. Denver Broncos (18): When even disabled people like Cincinnati can overtake 353 yards of enemies, it speaks of the dominant possibility of the Denver team, who lost their previous two games in a walk-off field goal.

13. Commander Washington (8): The NFC teams are running the ball more effectively (154.8 yards per game), but no one on this massive backfield committee has even 200 individually in the season. And wait until QB Jaden Daniels returns… and that may be the case any time.

14. Jacksonville Jaguars (17): Their 13 takeaways – including at least three in every game – are already four more than all of last season. The Jags are the sixth team since 2000 to record multiple interceptions in each of the first four games of the season.

15. San Francisco 49ers (13): Among the issues that address this team is relying on (and worried?) on RB Christian McCaffrey, who leads the league with 100 touches, but averages 5.3 careers average to 5.3 (discount on campaigns he shortened).

16. Baltimore Ravens (7): They will not leave Baltimore again until October 30th. Their goodbye comes in week 7.

17. Minnesota Viking (15): Europe, where bikes continue after their losses in Dublin, is great…but probably not if you’re trying to rehabilitate so many injured linemen.

18. Chicago Bears (19): WR Rome Odunze has at least one TD in every game. The last Chicago player to open a season by finding the end zone in each of the first four games? Walter Payton… 1986.

19. Arizona Cardinals (16): Kyler Murray is 8-22 in the division game, the worst record to start a quarterback since the 2002 reorganization.

20. Dallas Cowboys (28): One aspect of his game should be even more appreciated as an epic kicker like Brandon Aubrey. The ability to dump kickoffs very accurately throughout the landing zone of the NFL’s new “dynamic kickoff” era.

twenty one. Houston Texans (21): They allowed them to be 16 points less than any other team. Don’t fill Houston yet.

twenty two. New England Patriot (25): Marcus’ Jones Team Records 167 punt return yards Sunday included 87 yards of TD and 61 yards.

twenty three. Cincinnati Bengals (20): They posted a field goal to start their Monday night game in Denver… and then never crossed midfield again. Cincy should seriously consider its attack, namely QB2 Jake Browning, while assessing direction ahead of a potential comeback by injured Joe Burrow.

twenty four. Carolina Panthers (22): Good luck with the heads and tails of the NFC Southern costumes.

twenty five. AtlantaFalcons (23): Good luck with the head and tail of the NFC South costume.

26. New York Giants (30): One way to protect QB Jaxson Dart when getting professional bearings? Get him off the field for a long stretch by allowing the first down of League High 96.

27. LasVegas Raiders (24): RB Ashton Jeanty became the first Silver and Black Rookie since Bo Jackson in 1987 to post a TD run and a catch in the same game. now It’s safe to say Jeanty has officially arrived.

28. Cleveland Browns (26): Not only do we give up the season that is quickly running away from them, we must praise the Browns. Nevertheless, they acquired veteran LT Cam Robinson on Monday.

29. Miami Dolphins (29): They finally broke into the victory column on Monday night, but it’s not easy to find it again without the injured WR Tyreek Hill.

30. New York Jets (27): There are no cigars here, but three out of the four losses are one score. But the bad team found a way to lose, and NYJ didn’t have to look hard on Monday with three turnovers and 13 penalties.

31. NewOrleans Saints (32): There isn’t much to write at home for this team in 2025. But they are credited with the tough fight in Buffalo on Sunday. And here’s where 229 begins, the tip of Cameron Jordan’s cap for many years is the record for a new franchise. He is also an act of class.

32. Tennessee Titans (31): Not only did they not win, but their margin of defeat widened by the week. Rookie QB Camward summed up the team in a brief summary after a whitewashing in Houston on Sunday.

Huawei Automotive Sound Engineering Lab in Shanghai

0

I stepped into the Shanghai Acoustics R&D Center in Huawei and was hoping for a standard facility tour. Instead, what I came across was a comprehensive automotive sound engineering operation that challenges the established order of audio systems within the car.

The facility that Huawei has been developing since its launch in 2012 with serious audio research investments, houses three different test environments. A fully unpleasant chamber of 4.8x4x4m, a large semi-echo room spanning 14x12x5m with reflective floors, and a dedicated listening room consisting of a 9.1.6 layout. Photos were not allowed due to concerns about their own technology, but the technical specifications tell their own story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnz3sr-dj5e

In-car audio challenges

Goller will oversee what Huawei calls the “master tuning methodology,” including positions at Gamut Audio, Bang & Olufsen and Harman International. This is a process that begins with objective acoustic measurements, but relies heavily on the psychoacoustic principles of final vocalization.

Speaking in the listening room on the tour’s first agenda, Goller outlined Huaway’s development philosophy. The purpose is to create what is described as a “phantom effect” that faithfully reproduces the recording as intended by the artist to listen to, as it is described as a “phantom effect” that transports the listener into the original recording environment. This requires combining scientific acoustic measurements and artistic tuning expertise with dedicated hardware.

The technical process he described begins with objective measurements – the characteristics of frequency response curves, phase relationships, timing behavior, and distortion. These establish performance boundaries. From there, extensive subjective listening sessions use psychoacoustic principles to improve vocalization and correct for cabin’s inherent acoustic tasks, asymmetry, near-range reflections, and bass loads.

The goal is to stay true to the source material, while still working within these constraints.

Huawei Sound Ultimate Series

Inside the Maextro S800 Luxury Electric Sedan (Photo: Huawei Sound)

The specific results of this study are the Huawei Sound Ultimate series, Tech Giant’s most luxurious audio system currently deployed on the Maextro S800 Luxury Electric Sedan. The system consists of 43 speakers powered by dual amplifiers delivering a total power of 2,920 watts.

Called Huawei, the “industry-first seat-specific 4D immersive surround sound experience” includes a rear 4D exerter that syncs with music and video content, adding tactile feedback to your auditory experience.

Hardware innovations are concrete rather than general. Tangential force woofer rotates traditional door woofer geometry 90 degrees, reducing panel resonance while expanding bass response. The patented dual-dia flag subwoofer utilizes the cabin volume itself, rather than being constrained by traditional enclosure designs.

The Crystal Star-Ring Diffuser automatically rises when residents enter and integrates with rhythm-synchronized ambient lighting while improving central image accuracy. Huawei claims 30% sound uniformity compared to its previous generation.

The Spatial Audio implementation uses 10 overhead channels, adaptive sound field control, and what Huawei describes the ASA’s own spatial audio track model for placement and clarity. Interestingly, the system integrates with Harmono and extends beyond pure audio to what Huawei calls “sound-to-light” technology.

Independent Sound Zone

The most technically ambitious feature is independent sound zone technology. Each of the four headrests integrates two tweeters and two midrange units. In combination with Huawei’s sound field control algorithm, the main speaker arrangement acts as an active silencer, targeting audio leakage between the front and rear rows.

Huawei claims a separation of up to 30dB between rows and 99% energy separation. During the demonstration, the front passengers listened to classical music while the rear passengers watched the action film and watched with minimal audible crosstalk.

The system also incorporates road noise cancellation using what Huawei describes as the “omni-demental model.” Multi-layer acoustic glass and absorbent materials offer passive isolation and target what the company calls the “library-level” baseline noise floor.

Investment Questions

Huawei disclosed substantial R&D spending: in 2024 it accounted for $179.7 billion (approximately £2 billion / €23.4 billion), accounting for 20.8% of its total revenue, with over 113,000 employees becoming R&D rolls. The company says that around $60 billion (approximately £6.6 billion / €7.8 billion) is being used especially for basic scientific research.

These numbers contextualize Huawei’s automotive music engineering ambitions. The company currently provides solutions to more than 20 automakers, spanning driver assistance, cockpit systems, acoustics and controls. However, Huawei has established itself as a component supplier. Individual car manufacturers decide on market availability and regional launches.

Impact on the market

The automotive sound engineering landscape has traditionally been dominated by established European brands. Huawei’s systematic approach – employing expertise from dedicated testing facilities, legacy audio companies, and critical capital investments represent challenges to its established order.

The question isn’t whether Huawei can build an impressive technology demo. The Maextro S800 system clearly works. The question is whether this level of refinement leads to a wider production volume across multiple vehicle platforms at a commercially viable price range.

Goller’s stated goal is to “optimal reproduction of recordings – bring closer to the artist’s intended experience.” This is the purpose of standard audiophiles, but given the constraints of the environment, it has historically been a struggle for car sound engineering to achieve.

evaluation

After experiencing both laboratory facilities and in-vehicle systems, Huawei’s program appears methodologically sound. The combination of measurement-driven development and subjective tuning improvements represents standard practices for high-end audio that fit the context of the automobile.

Whether this leads to market success depends on factors beyond acoustic performance, whether production scalability, supply chain integration with diverse automakers, and ultimately, consumers value independent sound zones and sophisticated tuning sufficient to pay premium prices.

Huawei has built a technology foundation. Commercial proof emerges as these systems move from flagship demonstrations to a wider car lineup.

In a costly and dangerous meeting at Quantico

Are they becoming robbed of their loyalty? How can I hear a speech about the “warrior spirit”? How to take a physical fitness test?

Theories swirl when Americans try to explain I ordered quickly last week, and on Tuesday, mystical U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses rushed over the orders, calling hundreds of military commanders in Quantico, Virginia.

  • The pentagon has not dropped any hints. The highest level American officials around the world are ordered to report to the base for an 8am meeting.
  • Was this an email? The export told USA Today that this could be (at least) a conference call, as funds dedicated to annual travel, which were allocated to military units on the day of the meeting will expire.
  • Government closure could lock generals in Quantico. President Donald Trump and Democrats emerged from a private White House meeting on Monday without agreeing to keep the federal government open. If the Commander’s aide has not booked a return flight, they could get stuck.

Increased billing for DHS for “excessive force”

Rebecca Shouhed watched surveillance video in horror as one immigration agent knocked the 79-year-old American citizen father to the ground during his car wash business. When he stood up and went outside, the other two worked on him on the pavement. Her father, Rafie Ollah Shouhed, filed a $50 million tort claim against the Department of Homeland Security and its constituent bodies, including the U.S. immigration and customs enforcement, alleging that the agents were “illegal and unlawful assault and abused” during the operation. Increasingly violent arrest encounters have led to millions of dollars of tort claims by people shouhed, etc.

“I feel horrible to all the hurt families and they’re the same crap I go down, my wife and I are underneath. I apologize for that.”

~Thomas Sanford, whose voice was slightly broken, spoke to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA Today network in a short phone interview Monday. His son, Thomas Jacob Sanford, attacked the church during Sunday morning service. Four church members were killed in the attack. Eight other people were injured. Meet Americans going to “Grey”

American growth crops have acquired research-grade peptides and are converting them to drugs like GLP-1 amidst affordable and access barriers facing weight loss drugs like Ozempic. This process is casually called “Grey GLP-1” or “Grey”. However, the popularity of “gray” involves medical and legal experts. “Grey GLP-1” is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and purchasing research-grade peptides for human use is illegal at the state and federal level. Incorrect information is also ramped up. Healthcare providers told USA Today that Americans are eager to lose weight and “grab the straw.”

Today’s speaker

US citizens seek damages after violent ice arrest

0

The 79-year-old California car wash owner and a US citizen are among those looking for millions of people from the government after federal agents tackle him on the ground.

play

Rebecca Shouhed watched surveillance video in horror as one immigration agent knocked the 79-year-old American citizen father to the ground during his car wash business. When he stood up and went outside, the other two worked on him on the pavement.

You can see the agent barreling to her father, Rafie Ollah Shouhed, she said, “bulldosing the hallways like a linebacker.”

Under President Donald Trump’s nationwide immigration crackdown, federal agents have ordered them to actively pursue those they believe are illegally in the country.

The increasingly violent encounters of arrest have resulted in multiple, multi-million dollar tort claims by people, including American citizens, who say they were severely hurt or mistakenly taken into custody during the ice operation.

Homeland Security leaders allegedly suspected of resisting arrest, attacking agents or obstructing law enforcement operations.

“If you place your hands on our law enforcement, we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law,” DHS Chief Christa Noem said in a September 19 post on social media site X.

Business owners say they want to show the agent’s employee documents

Shawed, the owner of Valley Car Wash in Van Nuis, California, filed a $50 million tort claim on September 26 against DHS and its constituent agencies, including US immigration and customs enforcement, claiming that the agent was “illegal and unlawful assault and abused.”

A DHS spokesperson said in an emailed statement to USA Today that the agent arrested “five illegal foreigners from Guatemala and Mexico who violated our country’s immigration laws” and “were arrested for obstructing operations, assaulting and obstructing federal officers.”

Ice was detained for almost 12 hours, according to allegations of tort. He was not charged with a crime.

James Desimone, the attorney representing the show in his claims, said the car wash owner told the agent to let his employee show his work approval documents. Desimone said the surveillance video revealed that he was “not engaged in any threatening behavior.”

“Instead of talking to him, they immediately rely on extremely cruel power and power,” Desimone said.

Rebecca Shouhed said after watching the video, “I was hooked.” “He had a heart attack. He has three stents in his heart.”

Father Shawed said at a press conference after the September 9 incident that the agent said, “You’re ice and not f-f-ice. You don’t have ice.”

Other recent claims against DHS for “excessive force”

Shouhed’s is not the first tort claim against DHS this year.

In another, the wife and daughter of a farm worker who died in August after an ice attack in a California cannabis greenhouse, claiming to have an ice agent covered in battle gear that used “excessive power,” resulting in a fatal fall that killed Jaime Alanis.

According to his family and the Ventura County Medical Examination Office, Alanis died two days after the attack with a blunt instrument head and neck injury. His widow and daughter each seek $47 million.

Separately, in August, US citizens and Iraq War veteran George filed a tort claim against DHS in search of unspecified damages after an ice agent broke through a car window, arrested him for ice disorders in Southern California, and detained him for three days without access to lawyers.

All three claims were filed under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which can precede a case in federal court.

The FTCA was created to allow people to sue the federal government when they cause harm to government employees. The Act requires plaintiffs to first file claims with a responsible federal agency before sue in court.

In its 2025 budget report, ICE said its litigation division was defending more than 350 administrative tort claims as of fiscal year 2023, seeking damages of more than $55.5 billion. The agency had paid just $813,565 on the completed bill, according to the report.

“These patterns of agents seem to rely on them to enforce whenever they question or face,” Desimone said.

What the DHS guidelines say about the use of force

A 2018 policy memo, written and distributed during the first Trump administration, provides detailed guidance on when and how homeland security law enforcement officials use force.

They may use forces to control “subjects” in the course of official duties approved by law, and in the defense of themselves and others. To meet the Fourth Amendment standards, DHS guidelines must use force to be “objectively rational” in certain circumstances.

The guidelines also recognize that law enforcement officials are “often forced to make a momentary judgment in a tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving situation.” The use of physical forces must be stopped “when resistance stops or when an incident is in control.”

This year, there have been few official consequences for ICE and other federal agents caught on videos dealing with immigrants, protesters, or bystanders.

But in September, an unnamed ice agent was “released from his current duties” after a video was distributed showing him slamming a distraught woman onto the floor inside a New York City immigration court building.

Rebecca Shoed said she is worried about what she should come as Trump’s crackdown spreads.

“No one can hold back this,” she said. “It’s like free for everyone.”

A pre-built AI app for reply is intended to quickly track AI adoption

0

Adopting AI on a large scale can be difficult. Companies around the world are finding their pace of AI deployments getting frustratingly slow as they face challenges of implementation, integration and customization. Generation AI is undoubtedly powerful, but can be complicated, especially for businesses that start from scratch.

To help organizations overcome the hurdles associated with adopting AI, the responses introduced “pre-built” AI apps designed to reduce the time, technical expertise and risk needed to deploy AI solutions.

The purpose of pre-built AI apps is to streamline business access to information, increase operational efficiency and improve the quality of decision making through smart conversational interfaces and automated workflows. Companies rely on such apps for fast and sustainable adoption, particularly at the earliest stages of AI implementation, limiting the need for human intervention.

Reply’s pre-built AI apps are “ready-to-use agent systems” that can be applied in a variety of business contexts. One such example would be to simplify CV updates, create dynamic skill maps that identify and connect employee abilities, and help HR teams see their strengths more clearly and support staff career development.

Each AI app pre-created replies can be customized and/or expanded to suit your company’s workflow and data, but organizations will have full control over regulations, privacy and compliance.

Asserts digital agents

Claims Digital Agents automate data extraction from medical documents. It helps you build a “personalized knowledge base” and speed up your claim processing and health insurance management. To process health insurance claims, you will usually need to review several documents, including medical reports and bills, which are of different formats and quality. The process is slower, more error-prone, and more claims are less sustainable.

Claims Digital Agent uses document processing systems that use AI and optical character recognition (OCR). Companies can extract important information from unstructured documents, sort claims by type, and convert data into standardized formats. Create a personalized knowledge base that will improve as each claim is processed. Claims Digital Agent uses validation layers for document preprocessing, AI-driven extraction, enhanced OCR, classification, knowledge graph structure, and accuracy checks.

AI-equipped HR assistant

HR Assistant is designed to provide employee support 24/7 via conversational AI technology, HR systems integration, and knowledge management. Self-service assistants understand several languages and are aware of context. Employees can navigate more traditional, complex systems and more easily find information, complete tasks and access HR services without waiting for staff assistance.

Reply uses AI to enable assistants to provide personalized answers based on employee roles and location. It works on a variety of HR systems, including ServiceNow and SharePoint. HR teams can use the app to manage their knowledge base and update or improve documents without the need for technical skills.

Internal Knowledge Optimization Device

Internal Knowledge Optimiser is transcribed to the video “an interactive knowledge base for fast and contextual answers via natural language.” Webinars, videos, meetings, and documents can be created in a backlog of unstructured content that is not used by many businesses and is difficult to access and add unused. AI can be used to extract useful insights from your data. Reply’s internal knowledge Optimiser uses AI to transform unstructured content into a coherent knowledge base, allowing users to ask natural language questions and get information from complex content. This system combines a variety of search methods.

The reply hopes that pre-built AI apps will help change AI adoption in companies in many sectors. From experiments to adopted adoption, it offers practical and sustainable pathways, helping businesses turn AI into scalable solutions that have measurable impacts.

Environmental enforcement will fall to the new low-rise of the Trump administration

0

play

The Trump administration highlights that environmental enforcement hit a historic low, as it underscores the administration’s reduction in rules protecting vulnerable communities from pollution, as it hits its historic lows as it places fewer lawsuits against businesses for environmental violations than any other administration in the 21st century.

The administration has launched 14 lawsuits for environmental violations. The fewest lawsuits in the six months of this century have broken previous lows in the Biden administration.

In Trump’s first term, his administration filed 42 such cases in the first six months, federal data show.

The declining enforcement has tracked budget cuts in the EPA’s enforcement division for many years, but some experts say the Trump administration’s enforcement approach could mean that the community loses protection if the polluters are not responsible.

“We all went through the first Trump administration, and while things were mixed up, it felt like there was a rule of law,” said Keene Kelderman, research manager for the WatchDog Group Environmental Integrity Project. “I don’t feel like I’m worried this time.”

Enforcement actions by both administrative and judicial federal agencies are key levers that managers have used to hold businesses accountable for polluting the environment, and are usually the burdens placed on low-income communities.

Administrative cases form the majority of the Environmental Protection Agency’s enforcement measures. These tend to be small crimes that are handled without the need for a court. For example, a water treatment facility that has failed to submit a contamination report.

But for a bigger violation, given the oil spill, the EPA takes the company to court, calling it a judicial case. These cases will be filed through the Department of Justice seeking heavy fines, cleaning compensation and additional pollution prevention equipment. In very rare cases, such as when the company intentionally contaminates the surroundings or when its actions are held responsible for death, the DOJ can pursue criminal charges against the company.

While the Trump administration’s new executive enforcement case coincides with past presidents, new judicial cases with heavier financial results are the lowest of this century.

An example of recent judicial action has come to facilities in Puerto Rico because it releases too many carcinogenic gases.

Asked about the trend of decline, the EPA defended its execution records, downplaying the lawsuit as a measure of execution, highlighting this year’s management and criminal execution records.

The agency said it launched more environmental criminal cases in the first six months than the Biden administration. No data on recent criminal cases has been published in a database analyzed by USA Today. This is the latest criminal case recorded in 2023, and USA Today requested new data to confirm this.

The agency said in a statement: “This administration is focused on efficiently resolving violations and achieving compliance as quickly as possible. This is not to promote broad injunctive relief beyond what the law requires and unfairly and illegally burdens industrial and energy.”

Judicial cases have been on a downward trend for more than a decade after peaking in former President Barack Obama’s first administration in 2009. For the first six months of his first term, the Obama administration filed 102 cases.

All subsequent administration declines since the first Obama administration came as EPA resources fell.

During Obama’s first term, the EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Budget also peaked. It has since been reduced by multiple administrators. In 2024, data compiled by the Environmental Integrity Project showed that in 2024 was about $200 million lower than in 2011, adjusting for inflation and cutting staff by more than 500 employees.

Beyond the EPA, the Federal Restructuring of the Elon Musk-led Government Efficiency Bureau also reduced the environmental enforcement section of the DOJ that handles these major cases.

Based on the farewell party he was invited to, other conversations with Tom Mariani, former chief of DOJ’s Environmental Enforcement Division, estimate that the number of lawyers in his unit is between 65 and 70, falling to age 120 before 2025.

Mariani said when the EPA sues someone, it is a labor-intensive process to get evidence of a violation. He remembers reading about people who say they keep hearing, ‘You need to do more with less.’

In addition to these budgets and staffing cuts, Larry Starfield, former assistant principal at the EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Department, said political will is another major variable in enforcement.

In many cases, minorities and low-income communities tend to be disproportionately exposed to pollution. To address these inequalities, the Environmental Justice Programme was instituted.

In March, the EPA set a new enforcement prioritization in a memo, revealing that it would not punish businesses on environmental justice grounds in accordance with Trump’s executive order.

“Environmental justice considerations will no longer be notified of EPA enforcement and compliance assurance work,” the memo said, explicitly noting that it may no longer be possible to consider whether the affected communities are overloaded or vulnerable.

“So, if there are communities that have been suffering from high levels of pollution for decades, enforcers can’t see it. If the community has a high cancer rate and there is a decline in healthcare, enforcers can’t take that into consideration,” Starfield said. “I think it’s a very sad overreaction to a perceived problem, and I think it’s wrong.”

In an email statement, the EPA said environmental justice is “actually discrimination” and that officials are committed to dealing with pollution for all Americans. “The EPA ensures that enforcement focuses on worst pollution and harm to human health.

The March memo also restricts enforcement to suspend energy production.

“Enforcement and compliance assurance measures should not be closed except for the stage of energy production (from exploration to distribution) or the substantial imminent threat to human health,” the document states.

Daniel Farber, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said it’s not uncommon for the administration to align with priorities, but “in this case, the administration’s priorities are so leaning towards environmental protection that it only amplifies the issue at the enforcement level.”

Farber is not the only way environmental laws are enforced.

“There’s state government involvement and some private citizen lawsuits, and I don’t know how much of them are taking up slack,” Farber said.

Beyond changing enforcement priorities, the EPA has launched dozens of other deregulation efforts. It is a proposal to limit greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles and power plants and abolish the government’s ability to weaken standards for emissions from power plants. USA Today previously reported that agency cost analysis models estimate that these actions could cost more than they could save Americans.

Starfield said he hopes the EPA is established: focusing on public health and protecting the environment.

“Until this year, I would like to restore it to what Richard Nixon had to do with it.”

Mariani, former DOJ Environmental Executive Director, said there is an incredible number of people living near certain industrial operations. “If you care about clean air, clean water and the land we have to dispose of things in a safe and secure way, you should be concerned about this.”

Rising AI will require pushing APAC data centers, Vertiv says

0

As more businesses in the Asia-Pacific region adopt artificial intelligence and drive their operations, pressure on data centers is rapidly increasing. Traditional facilities built for previous generations of computing struggle to keep up with the heavy energy use and cooling demands of modern AI systems. By 2030, GPU-driven workloads push the rack’s power density to 1 MW and no longer adequately upgraded incremental. Instead, operators are now turning to dedicated “AI factory” data centers designed from the ground up.

AI News Speaking with Paul Churchill, Vice President of Vertiv Asia, we got a better understanding of how the region prepares for this shift and what infrastructure changes are ahead.

Explosive market growth is setting the pace

The AI data center market is projected to surge from $236 billion in 2025 to about $934 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by the rapid adoption of AI in industries such as finance, healthcare and manufacturing. These sectors rely on high-performance computing environments with dense GPU clusters that require much more energy and cooling capabilities than traditional servers.

In the Asia-Pacific region, this demand will be amplified by government investment in digitalization, expansion of 5G, and the deployment of cloud-native and generated AI applications. All this is to raise computing needs at a pace the region has never seen before.

Churchill explained that to meet this demand it would require more than just a larger facility. A scalable, sustainable, smarter infrastructure strategy is needed. “Infrastructure leaders need to move beyond fragmentary upgrades. Future prepared strategies include adopting A-Optimized Infrastructure, combining large-capacity power systems, advanced thermal management and integrated, scalable designs,” he said.

Cooling and power challenges are rising

As rack density increases from 40 kW to 130 kW and up to 250 kW by 2030, cooling and power supply are becoming a key issue. Traditional air cooling methods are no longer sufficient under these conditions.

To address this, Vertiv is developing a hybrid cooling system that mixes liquid cooling directly to the chip with air-based solutions. The system can adapt to workload changes, reduce energy usage, and maintain reliability. “Our coolant distribution units allow for direct liquid cooling to the tip, ensuring reliability and maintainability in high density environments,” Churchill said.

Paul Churchill, Vice President of Vertive Asia

Power supply is also becoming more complicated. AI workloads fluctuate rapidly, so infrastructure needs to respond in real time. Vertiv has evolved its rack-based power distribution units and busway systems to handle higher voltages and improve load distribution. Intelligent monitoring helps operators manage loads more efficiently, reduce wasteful capacity and extend uptime. This is an important consideration in parts of Southeast Asia where the power grid is not stable.

Data Centers are redesigned for AI

As planned by Hyperscalars such as AMD, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, the rise of liquid-cooled GPU pods and 1 MW racks indicates a deeper architectural shift. Instead of renovating older facilities, they are specially designed to support AI.

“The future of data center architectures is hybrid and these infrastructures need to build facilities around liquid flow,” Churchill said. This includes new floor layouts, advanced coolant distributions and more sophisticated power systems.

Next-generation facilities integrate chip-level to grid cooling, power and monitoring. In the Asia-Pacific region where hyperscale campuses are expanding rapidly, this type of integrated design is essential to meet performance expectations and sustainability goals.

Incremental upgrade to AI factory data center

By 2030, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to overtake the US in data center capacity, reaching nearly 24 GW of consignment power. To handle this growth, businesses are moving from ad hoc upgrades to full-stack AI factory data centers.

Churchill said the transition should take place in stages. The first step is IT management rather than treating integrated planning, power-connecting, cooling, and IT management as separate systems. This approach simplifies deployment and provides a powerful base for scaling.

The second step is to employ modular and prefabricated systems. These allow businesses to add capacity to the stages without major disruption. “Companies can deploy factory-tested modules along with existing infrastructure, allowing them to gradually migrate their workloads to AI readiness capabilities without disruptive overhauls,” he said.

Finally, sustainability must be incorporated into every stage. This includes the use of lithium ion energy storage, grid interactive UPS systems, and high voltage distributions to improve efficiency and resilience.

DC Power acquires new connections to AI data centers

Vertiv recently introduced PowerDirect Rack, a DC power shelf designed for AI and high performance computing. Switching to DC power reduces energy loss by reducing the number of conversion steps between the grid and the server. It also combines renewable energy and battery storage systems, which are more common in the Asia-Pacific.

This is especially useful in energy-constrained markets such as Vietnam and the Philippines. In these regions, flexible power solutions are essential to keeping facilities running smoothly. As Churchill pointed out, DC Power “is not just a play of efficiency, it’s a strategy to enable sustainable scalability.”

Sustainability is becoming a central priority

With AI promoting energy use, data center operators are facing more stringent regulations and rising grid constraints. This is especially true in Southeast Asia. In this case, power reliability and tariffs differ greatly.

Vertiv works with operators to integrate alternative energy sources such as lithium-ion batteries, hybrid power systems, and microgrids. These can reduce reliance on the grid and increase resilience. There is also a growing interest in solar-assisted UPS systems and advanced energy storage technologies. This helps in managing load balance and costs.

Cooling efficiency is also a major focus. Hybrid liquid cooling systems can reduce both energy and water usage compared to older methods. “Our focus is on providing infrastructure that meets performance demands to meet ESG goals,” Churchill said. “We are working with our partners to ensure that AI-driven growth in the region is responsible, sustainable and align with long-term digital and environmental goals.”

Modular solutions support rapid expansion

Many emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region face challenges such as limited land, unstable electricity supply and lack of skilled labor. In these settings, modular and prefabricated data center systems provide a practical solution.

Prefabricated modules can reduce deployment time by up to 50% while improving energy efficiency and scalability. Allows operators to gradually expand, adding capacity, if necessary, without large upfront investments. Flexibility is particularly valuable for AI workloads and can grow quickly and predictably.

Combining compact design and energy-efficient operation, modular systems provide operators with a way to build AI readiness faster and less risk-free. This is an important advantage as the region’s digital economy grows.

Preparation for a tough future

AI Surge is redesigning how data centers are built and how they operate in the Asia-Pacific region. As workloads grow and sustainability pressures increase, businesses can no longer rely on old infrastructure. The transition to AI factory data centers with advanced cooling, DC power and modular systems reflects a change in how the region prepares for the next era of computing.

play

Hurricane Hanbert, a Category 4 storm, is not expected to land in the US, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center on September 29, but there are still some possible impacts on the East Coast.

According to the NHC Advisory issued on the morning of Monday September 29th, the storm is spinning southwest, approximately 365 miles southwest of Bermuda, with a maximum sustained wind of 145 mph moving at 14 mph at 145 mph.

According to the NHC, the hurricane, along with tropical storm Imelda, is expected to create “dangerous marine conditions that include RIP currents that threaten high waves.” Much of the US East Coast is expected to be affected from September 29th.

According to the NHC, tropical storm clocks are effective for Bermuda.

This predicted track shows the most likely path in the center of the storm. The full width of the storm or its impact is not shown, and the storm center can move out of the cone for up to 33% of the time.

Hurricane Hunbert Spaghetti Model

The illustrations include an array of prediction tools and models, not all are created equal. Hurricane Centers can help you make predictions using only the top four or five top performance models.

Where is Tropical Storm Imelda?

Located 265 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, the storm is expected to leave Florida and the southeastern United States. This is according to the Palm Beach Post, part of today’s network of Hurricane Hanbert, pushed eastward by a system of high-pressure buildings in the northeastern United States.

According to the NHC, the storm moved north at about 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

On the morning of Monday September 29th, northwest Bahamas, including Eleusera, Abacos, Grand Bahamas and surrounding keys, Imelda spinning near Bermuda has been warned of a tropical storm.

Tropical Storm Imelda Tracker

This predicted track shows the most likely path in the center of the storm. The full width of the storm or its impact is not shown, and the storm center can move out of the cone for up to 33% of the time.

Imelda, a tropical storm that causes “life-threatening clefts” along the East Coast

Tropical storms and hurricane watches and warnings have not been introduced to the United States, but from today on, the life-threatening RIP flow, high surf and dune erosion could have a major impact on Florida.

Along the North Carolina coast, the NWS issued a coastal flood warning on Tuesday, September 30th, about potential medium seaside flooding. The warnings include Hatteras Islands, Ocracoke Islands and East Carterlett County, located on the state coast, about 118 miles northeast of Wilmington, North Carolina.

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes originate in the tropical regions above warm waters. Thunderstorm clusters can develop across the ocean when the water temperature exceeds 80 degrees. If conditions are correct, clusters are swirling into tropical waves and storms known as tropical depression.

Tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm when its sustained wind speed reaches 39 mph. When the wind reaches 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Get ready for a hurricane now

Delaying preparations to potentially save lives could mean waiting until it’s too late. “Get disaster supply while the shelves are still in stock and flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period, so get that insurance inspection early,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends.

  • Establish an evacuation plan. If you are at risk from a hurricane, you will need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to plan where you will go and how you will get there.
  • Assemble disaster supply. Whether you’re evacuated or not, you’ll need supplies not only to get through the storm, but perhaps for the long aftermath, NOAA said.
  • Get an insurance inspection and document your property. Contact your insurance company or agent now to ask for an insurance inspection to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or replace your home or belongings. Remember that housing and tenant insurance doesn’t cover floods, so you’ll need individual insurance for them. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or through your national flood insurance program.
  • Create a family communication plan. NOAA says you should take the time to write down your hurricane plans and share them with your family. Determine where family gatherings are to be met and include out-of-town locations in case of evacuation.
  • It strengthens your home. Now is the time to improve the home’s ability to withstand hurricanes. Cut the wood, attach storm shutters, accordion shutters, impact glass, and seal the outside of the wall opening.

The exact amount of Social Security Cost Adjustments (COLA) for next year could be a bit surprising to some retirees. But I don’t think it should Too much Surprising.

Retirees will have to wait five and a half weeks (whether they give it or take a few days) for the Social Security Agency (SSA) to announce the 2026 COLA. The agency needs inflation data to complete the calculations in September 2025. That information should be published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in mid-October.

However, there is a pretty good idea as to what the next increase in Social Security benefits will be, thanks to the non-profit senior advocacy organization The Senior Citizens League (TSCL). Each month, TSCL updates a statistical model designed to predict the next cola. The latest forecast is Social Security Cola in 2026 at 2.7%.

Certainly, TSCL may need to slightly modify Cola’s forecast after incorporating the inflation count for August (it will not be available until mid-September). September inflation data may make the actual COL published by SSA different from TSCL’s forecast. However, it is a big bet that the increase in Social Security benefits is pretty close to the organization’s forecast.

An unpleasant surprise

The average monthly Social Security retirement check for July 2025 was $2,006.69. 2.7% Cola converts to $54.18 per month. However, most retirees should not expect to pocket a full social security increase.

If you are over 65, your Medicare Part B premium may be deducted from your Social Security benefits. Perhaps the biggest surprise for retirees in 2026 is that these premiums could increase significantly more than last year. Also, if Social Security benefits are close to average payments, an increase in premium could wipe out about 40% of Coke.

Medicare councillors predict that Medicare Part B Premium will increase by 11.6% next year, almost double the 2025 increase. On average, the monthly premium is $21.50 more. This is the largest dollar increase for Medicare Part B Premium since 2022, an increase of $21.60.

If Social Security Cora for 2026 is 2.7% as predicted by TSCL, this expected Medicare Part B Premium Hiking offsets 39.7% of the average Social Security increase of $54.18 per month. Many retirees who don’t want a higher premium could be kept for obviously unpleasant surprises when they see how much extra money they’ll receive from Social Security next year.

What can a retiree do?

Apart from trying to reduce overall spending or work part-time to increase income, is there anything a retiree can do to prevent many of the Social Security Cola in 2026 from being wiped out by the higher Medicare Part B Premium? The good news is that there are some actions you may be able to take.

First, consider the possibility of switching from traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage plans. You will need to pay an even higher Part B premium next year, but some Medicare Advantage plans offer you a lower deduction and maximum out-of-pocket value that will save you money.

If your income is limited, you may be eligible for federal and state programs that provide financial assistance. For example, the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) helps to partially or fully cover Part B premiums, deductions, and coinsurances, and is available in all states.

What if you have a high income? You may be subject to an income-related monthly adjustment (IRMAA), which is an additional fee that increases your Medicare Part B Premium. Irmaas is based on adjusted gross income (MAGI) revised for two years, so reducing this fiscal year’s income will not be useful in 2026. However, if you have major life events such as unemployment, marriage, spouse death, or divorce, you can appeal to SSA to lower Irma.

Ice wants Chicago’s National Guard amid “riots” and arrests

Illinois Governor JB Pretzker said the Department of Homeland Security had requested the National Guard to protect immigration agents. Pretzker says the White House is making power gloves.

play

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker told reporters on September 29 that he just learned that the Department of Homeland Security had requested that the deployment of the National Guard be deployed in the region despite raucous objections from local leaders.

“What I’m warning about is that it’s now happening,” Pretzker said at a press conference. “This is not about fighting crime. It’s about winging fear and threats among Americans.

The governor said the Department of Homeland Security previously sent a memo to the Department of Defense’s Department of War, demanding 100 troops from the Illinois National Guard. According to Pretzker, the military should be used to sign the enforcement body of Trump’s Chicago area immigration enforcement body as Operation Mudiwai Blitz.

Sean Parnell, a spokesman for the Pentagon Prime Minister, confirmed that the War Department had received a request from the military. Parnell did not say whether the National Guard would be deployed.

“The Department of War has received a request for assistance in protecting the federal government’s personnel, property and functions in Illinois,” Parnell told USA Today. “Decisions will be made according to an established process and announced at the appropriate time.”

Trump has been saying he plans to send the National Guard to Chicago since early September. However, the White House has not deployed its troops against local leadership challenges. Illinois officials fear Trump is using clashes between federal agents and anti-immigration enforcement protesters as justification for Trump to deploy soldiers.

The president says the operation is intended to capture the “worst and worst” criminals who are immigrants. Illinois leaders say the Republican president’s goal is to control large democratic regions.

Illinois officials did not say exactly when National Guard members would deploy.

Pretzker said the memo from Homeland Security to the War Division is the same path taken to deploy troops in Portland, Oregon. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raul said he is ready to file a lawsuit against the White House if the military deploys.

In addition to Pretzker and Raul, other local leaders at the September 29 press conference include Chicago County President Toni Preckwinkle and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson.

Ice collision with Chicagoans gets hot

The expected deployment of the National Guard will take place approximately three weeks after Operation Midway Blitz launch.

Homeland Security officials said more than 700 migrants were in detention in connection with the operation. The crackdown on federal immigration enforcement reflects a major shift in the pace of long-standing sanctuary city Chicago and its surrounding areas.

A study compiled by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a research group tracking immigration enforcement data, shows that more than 6,000 detainees have passed through an area of US immigration customs facility located outside of Chicago in Broadview.

However, the crackdown sparked nearly 24 hours of protest at an immigration enforcement facility about 12 miles west of Willis Tower in Chicago.

Homeland Security officials called protesters “mobs,” arrested multiple people and charged at least two protesters with assault. Authorities say they brought handguns to the demonstration.

Federal agents use chemicals containing pepper spray and tear gas with gaze to disperse Chicago protesters blocking immigrant enforcement vehicles. Agents on Friday fired the chemicals to protesters and journalists standing on the road leading to an immigration enforcement facility on 1930 Beach Street in Broadview.

“What we’re looking at is the first right to amend the dictatorship that has been eroded by the dictatorship that has decided to reduce dissent,” Sen. Karina Villa told reporters on September 29.

A Broadview official told USA Today that the village police station is investigating federal agents to fire crowd-controlled weapons in news reporters’ vehicles. Homeland Security authorities did not respond to repeated requests for comments regarding the investigation.

Is ice catch “the worst and worst”?

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have said that centre is necessary to catch criminal immigrants, and among the famous arrests they promote, according to criminal history, immigration authorities say it includes child sexual abuse, domestic violence and battery.

But locals say innocent people are simply targeted based on their skin color.

“If you look like me, you’re at risk,” said Mexican-born Elendilla Rendon, a prominent Chicago immigration advocate. Rendon shed tears on September 29th, reading aloud a list of names of people photographed by immigration agents. “DHS terrifies our community and shows us the pain on social media.”

Research data from the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, shows that in 2025, 65% of immigrant detainees were not criminally convicted, and 93% had no violent convictions.

Among those who Chicagoans hold as examples of innocent people detained are Laura Murillo, a popular Southside Tamale vendor who was taken into custody on September 25th, and Silver Vilgas Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant who was fatally shot dead on September 12th after dropping his son at school.

“They don’t target violent criminals or gang members,” Pretzker said. “They are targeting Tamale vendors.”

Bad Bunny was a mid workout when Jay-Z called about the Super Bowl Show

0

Bad Bunny was in the middle of a workout when Jay-Z called him about the headlines for the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show.

“After the phone, I remember I liked 100 pull-ups,” the reggaeton superstar said he was calling Apple Music’s half-time headliner special with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden live on Monday, September 29th.

“I didn’t need to do any more exercises than I ever had…it was very special. It was very special.”

A week after Bad Bunny signed a 31-day Puerto Rico residency, it was revealed that he will be headlining the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime show in 2026.

“I kept this secret for a long time,” Bud Bunny told Lowe, adding that it “feels nice” to eventually share it with the world and his fans. “I felt very emotional yesterday because it was the first time I’d shown a video to one of my friends (announcement of the Super Bowl Halftime Show) and seeing his reaction he was very excited.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hdwcsc_yve

This next milestone in his career is bigger than him, Bad Bunny said.

“I’m really excited about my friends, my family, Puerto Rico and all Latinos in the world,” he told Apple Music in an interview. “I’m excited about my culture.”

Just hours before the announcement was officially shared, there were rumors that the headliner was being distributed online by Bad Bunny. Minutes before its release, he hinted at the halftime show in a tweet, saying he would add one US concert day. Finally, Bad Bunny- shared a video of himself sitting at the beach goal post as “Callaíta” performed in a collaboration post with the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation.

Nodding to Puerto Rican heritage, Bad Bunny wore a Pava. On Monday, he also shared that the beach on which the announcement footage was recorded is “very special because it’s his hometown beach.”

What to expect from Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

As for Bad Bunny’s vision for his Super Bowl halftime show, he still “knows” what he’s trying to do. “But that’s going to be a good thing.”

“I’m going to accept that moment,” he said. “It shows us what we have, our music, our culture. I just go on stage and have fun and enjoy it.”

This is the first time in his career that he will headline the halftime show, but Bad Bunny technically made his Super Bowl debut in 2020 when Shakira and Jennifer Lopez co-headlined. At the time, Bad Bunny made a cameo with J. Balvin, and the two performed Spanish poems for Cardi B’s “I Like It” and “Mi Gente” respectively.

Shakira congratulated Bad Bunny on Instagram, writing, “Welcome to the Super Bowl Stage!” Jennifer Lopez did the same and was bathed in the shared Puerto Rican heritage. “Bori Ganggu,” she wrote.

After closing out Puerto Rico’s Coriseo de Residency, Bad Bunny didn’t spend his days off before appearing on the Super Bowl stage in February. The “Tití Me Preguntó” artist will begin his 24-day Debítirarmás Fotos World Tour held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on November 21st.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show was recently spotted by Kendrick Lamar in February.

What does Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Gig mean in this political situation?

The 2026 Super Bowl is poised to become the first halftime show headline act to perform exclusively in Spanish, so the 2026 Super Bowl is expected to be another history-making moment, and perhaps the first for the NFL.

“You need to understand what the NFL did by choosing a bad bunny for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. That is, Really writes Mike Freeman, assistant sports editor at USA Today. In fact, they may be dislike The message of diversity. The league knew this and didn’t bother. ”

After Sunday’s announcement, rapper Jay-Z, who partnered with the NFL through ROC Nation to produce the halftime show, said in a statement he was “honored” to have a bad bunny at “the world’s biggest stage.”

“It’s really exciting to see Benito continue doing it for Puerto Rico,” he said. Meanwhile, the NFL SVP said in a statement: “As one of the world’s most influential streaming artists, (Bad Bunny’s) unique ability to bridge genres, languages and audiences makes it an exciting and natural choice to win the Super Bowl halftime stage.”

Cruise ships have already had more GI outbreaks than they have been in 2024.

0

play

  • Gastrointestinal disease outbreaks on the 2025 cruise exceeded the 2024 total.
  • Experts recommend washing your hands frequently with soap and water to prevent the spread of norovirus.

More than 70 people have been ill this month after the outbreak of the norovirus on the Royal Caribbean International ship. This case marks the 19th outbreak of gastrointestinal disease on a cruise that met the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention threshold for public notice in 2025, exceeding the 2025 total.

According to the CDC, 71 people, who, along with one crew, reported being ill during the voyage that began on September 19, reported 71 of the 1,874 passengers on the serenade of the Rhine seaship, were ill, according to the CDC. Their main symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.

According to Crewmapper, the ship departed from San Diego for a cruise to Mexico, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and Columbia. According to the CDC, the cruise line promoted cleaning and sanitation measures on board, quarantining isolated sick guests and employees.

The Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Cruise Line, issued an emailed statement to USA Today, saying, “The health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we visit are our number one priority.” “We implement strict cleaning procedures to maintain an environment that supports the highest level of health and safety on our ship, many of which are well above public health guidelines.”

Are there any outbreaks on cruise ships?

The CDC has recorded 19 gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruises so far this year, of which 14 were caused by norovirus. The disease occurred in 2024 for 15 of the total outbreaks and 13 of the 14 in the previous year.

“The number of recent cruise ship outbreaks has been higher than before the pandemic, but it remains to be seen whether this represents a new trend,” the health agency told USA Today in late April. “However, CDC data shows that new dominant strains are currently associated with reports of norovirus outbreaks on land. Ships usually follow this high norovirus season’s pattern of outbreaks.”

A preliminary review found “potential overdependence on ship hand sanitizers,” which is less effective against the virus than soap and water, the agency said.

According to the CDC website, there were 2,675 norovirus outbreaks reported by 14 states participating in the Norostat Network between August 1st and July 31st, 2024. These have increased from 1,478 in the same period last season.

“The total number of reported outbreaks in the 2024-2025 seasonal year exceeds the range reported in the 2012-2020 and 2021-2024 seasonal year,” the website reads.

Sarah R. Michaels, an assistant professor at Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, said norovirus can spread quickly on cruise ships, but most outbreaks haven’t happened there.

“They often happen within the community, and in many cases they don’t know what’s going on,” she told USA Today. “These areas where people are really in close contact, day care facilities, nursing homes, cruise ships, etc. are likely to be diagnosed, reported and attracted our attention.”

In fact, cruise ships make up only 1% of reported norovirus outbreaks.

How to protect yourself from norovirus

Michaels encouraged travelers to practice good hand hygiene.

“Washing your hands is a very important thing to do for a variety of infectious diseases, but especially for the norovirus, it’s really important to wash your hands not only after using the toilet, but before eating,” she said.

If symptoms began to develop, including vomiting, diarrhea, or nausea, Michaels recommended self-assessment to reduce spreads. For travelers who have not yet left, that may mean postponing their cruise or staying in the cabin if they are already on board. Passengers must also report symptoms to the ship’s medical staff.

CDC also recommends disinfecting and washing surfaces that may be contaminated.

“I don’t necessarily take that cruise or take that cruise for this reason,” Michaels said. “But take precautions and report your illness.”

Minivans and trucks are not the safest for rear passenger, IIHS research found

0

play

  • IIHS researchers tested the effectiveness of the seat belt through a head-on collision simulation, adding rear passengers for the first time.
  • There are no Stellantis vehicles eligible for the highest safety award.
  • Only two big pickups, the Rivian R1T and the Toyota Tundra, qualify under more stringent requirements

Minivans and pickups provide less protection for rear seat passengers than in the front seats, the insurance agency for highway safety, discovered after updating this year’s safety testing program.

Findings from the IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards showed that the risk of fatal injuries is higher for belted adults in the rear seats of new vehicles than in front.

IIHS has increased the requirements so that residents in the second row have the same level of protection provided by the advanced seat belts in the front row. As a result, fewer vehicles have won this year’s awards, with a total of 48, up from this time at 71 last year.

Small and medium-sized SUVs make up the majority of top performers. Of this year’s winners, 12 people won the “Top Safety Pick” and the rest reached “Top Safety Pick Plus” status.

Only two big picks, the Rivian R1T and the Toyota Tundra, met the higher standards set for the 2025 winners.

Enhanced safety requirements culled all vehicles produced by the Detroit 3 from the awardee circle, except three. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and Lincoln Nautilus reached the highest safety pick plus status, while the Chevrolet Rubbers made the best safety pick.

There are no Stellantis vehicles eligible for the highest safety award.

Detroit 3 was disappointed

IIHS President David Herkey said he was disappointed that more domestic vehicles didn’t make a list, and that they were advertised to their families, especially without the Stellantis, which sells the popular Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

“Some of the automakers behind vehicles advertised as family friendly need to step up and make improvements quickly,” he said.

Two technologies common in front seats are rarely visible on the rear seat belt, Harkey said: pre-tensioner belts and load limiters. The former pulls the passenger back into optimal position before a collision and tightens the belt to absorb the impact of the crash, while the latter activates the milliseconds after the collision occurs – the seat belt gently spools to relieve the person’s chest.

Similar to previous tests, IIHS researchers tested the effectiveness of seat belts through simulations of head-on collisions. Viable data occurred when the tested model attacked vehicles of equal size and weight at 40 mph, with 40% of the front width overlapping.

“It’s not that there’s a decline in the safety of the rear seats. We’re continuing to make all these advances in the front seats, leaving behind the rear seats,” Harkey said.

This year, the lab added a small, light test dummy “representing a small woman or a 12-year-old” behind the driver. The decision came after many studies on optimal changes to more accurately point out safety differences between different automaker models, Harkey said.

“There are two injuries we’ve seen and two things we’re trying to reduce. One is a chest injury that occurs as a result of high chest forces, and the load limiter works,” he said. “Other types of injuries seen, especially when residents are small, are what are called submarines, whose pelvis can slip under the belt and move into the abdomen, causing severe stomach trauma.”

Researchers also monitored “exploration” of passengers in the rear. Or how far the rear passenger heads crashed and moved. For example, did their heads hit the seat in front of them? That’s a disadvantage.

Regardless of the vehicle’s performance in the updated test, the IIHS maintains that the second row remains the safest place for children under the age of 13.

Along with the same two big picks eligible for the award and one small pick, it was also the only pick that got an acceptable or good rating in last year’s updated medium overlap test.

More strict standards

The shortage of three top-rated vehicles in Detroit is a chronic concern for the IIHS Top Safety Study, which the Institute has been conducting since 1995.

IIHS rated vehicles that are excellent, acceptable, marginal or poor in a variety of safety tests. Apart from seat belt safety, the vehicle must meet additional criteria and win the Top Safety Pick Award.

The vehicle should also obtain a good or acceptable rating in collision avoidance areas, including pedestrian front crash prevention technology tests for daytime and night driving, as well as headlights at all trim levels. This is because automakers can only provide certain safety features with specific bundled options of special features or equipment that can cost more than the basic package of the vehicle.

The stated goal of IIHS is to reach “safety equity” across the industry, where customers of a particular model can have access to safety features that are most likely to prevent injuries and crashes, regardless of the trim level they have purchased.

This year, two carmakers were holding their heads and shoulders up more than the other cars. Mazda-produced vehicle models had eight Top Safety Pick Plus winners out of the 36 in the best Safety Pick Plus category, but 10 models were represented by the Hyundai Motor Group, which sells the Kia, Hyundai and Genesis brands.

“If no other vehicles are shown on the list, it’s because the automakers can’t fully understand what the safety challenge is or can’t implement these safety features across the fleet,” Harkey said.

Within Hegseth’s Quantico Mystery Meeting, it can cost millions

0

play

Washington – They have pledged loyalty. To hear a speech about the “warrior spirit.” To take a physical fitness test.

These are one set of theories floating in an attempt to explain the mysterious Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses, who he rushed to order last week, summoning hundreds of military commanders to Quantico, Virginia on September 30th.

The Pentagon has not dropped any hints as to why it reported the highest level officers from around the world to the base for an 8am meeting.

Preparations for the rally were ratcheted up as President Donald Trump revealed he would appear in what he called a “very great meeting.”

“It’s really a great encounter talking about how well we’re doing military-wise, we’re talking about great shapes, a lot of good, positive things,” Trump told NBC on September 28th. “That’s just a good message.”

According to news reports and defense officials who are not permitted to speak publicly, the commander had a notice for about a week at Quantico. Typically, meetings of this importance are scheduled several months in advance.

The Washington Post and the New York Times reported that Heggs will give a speech about the “warrior spirit” and fitness standards.

Some people, including retired military leaders, aired concerns at the gathering.

Ben Hodges, a former commander of the US Army Europe, posted to X in 1935 when Adolf Hitler summoned a German general and swears “personal loyalty to Fuhler.” Hegseth wrote in his reply, “Cool Story, General.”

Was this an email?

One thing is that some experts told USA Today. This could be an email. At least it was a conference call.

“They can host video communications and don’t need to cost taxpayers millions,” said Virginia Berger, senior defense policy analyst for the project on government surveillance.

Congress encourages military units to pass the annual travel-only funds that will be allocated to them by the end of the fiscal year. This will fall from the front on the day of the meeting on September 30th. The money commander is withdrawn to book a Quanto trip.

“They can probably make things go and delay a bit of training or buying in the next fiscal year, but that’s going to be a real headache,” Harrison said.

Some units may “look through all the couch cushions and find changes to pay for it,” Burger said.

Shutdown could catch a general in Quantico

Adding more confusion is the increasing possibility of government shutdowns. If the Commander’s aide has not booked a return flight, they could get stuck. It would likely require Trump to “wave a magic wand” and approve funds to bring them home, Harrison said.

Some generals, such as the 11 combatants commanders, are geographically widely distributed and therefore must travel by official Pentagon VIP planes. But the majority that must fly will likely travel on commercial flights in economic seats, Harrison said..

Military leaders from far away regions stay in local hotels. Quantico has one dedicated Onbase hotel, but according to Burger, who worked as a combat instructor for four years, it could be filled as the large towing aide commander occupy multiple rooms.

“It wouldn’t be cheap,” she said.

“Aidance and security officers have to get a room near the commander. It could be five or ten rooms for the senior commander,” Harrison said.

In addition, leaders request daily meals and accidental pay. Everything said, it could be “millions of dollars,” Burger said.

Critics say that removing the country’s finest military personnel from the arena is inherently a dangerous move.

“The gap between commanders around the world is potentially dangerous,” writes Mark Kangsian, a defense expert at the Center for Strategic International Studies. “Deputy Commanders are still enforced, but many absentees may open up vulnerabilities.”

Trump’s presence at the event means the Secret Service must be on the ground and take the lead to secure the area. Lockdown to the extent necessary can cause confusion at Quantico’s FBI Academy.

The Secret Service said the process is no different from the appearance of other presidents, except for the off-the-scene nature of the rally.

But others opposed. “Quantico security will be a nightmare,” writes Cancian.

Quantico’s Marine Corps National Museum will be closed on the morning of September 30th, the base’s library will be closed, and students at base’s primary school will be on holiday.

Burger said the age of the interstate highway near Quantico and the potential for increased traffic around 587, small town surrounding the base.

“If I had worked at Quantico, I would work from home that day,” she said.
