Didi’s sentencing judge refuses to overturn the conviction, a new trial

Shawn “Diddy” Combs failed to overturn his beliefs prior to his sentence in a federal sex crimes case.

Combs’ legal team previously filed a motion to Judge Arun Subramanian to overturn criminal convictions for two modes of transportation to engage in prostitution or allow a new trial. According to court documents obtained by USA Today, the court rejected both claims in its opinion filed Tuesday, September 30th.

The Subramanians refused to defence attempts to narrow down the definition of “prostitution” he was convicted of, and prosecutors refused their argument that they had not presented enough de facto evidence to prove that combs was specifically transporting people for sexual payments. The judge called out the prosecution’s evidence, including testimony that the escort was “paid thousands of dollars… to have sex,” a woman identified as Cathy Ventura and “Jane,” a “overwhelming” person.

“The correct definition of prostitution in Man’s law is sex in exchange for money or equivalent,” writes Subramanian. “The government of the trial has presented overwhelming evidence of Mann’s guilt on many occasions, both with regard to Ventura and Jane.”

Regarding Combs’ new trial demands, his team is claiming evidence presented at the trial for more serious charges. The Subramanian also rejected the argument, saying “Kone cannot carry his “heavy burden” of showing “spillover prejudice.”

When is Didi’s verdict date?

On July 2nd, the fighting music mogul was acquitted of his most serious assault conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, and was convicted of a small number of transports engaged in prostitution charges in a bomb split decision. He is ready to issue his sentence on Friday, October 3rd.

Combs’ team recommends handing over Subramanians for 14 months’ prison hours while prosecutors seek 11 years’ sentence.

The Pentagon will win the regulations of the Restoration Senate

When explaining the Army’s struggle to cut the deficit to repair its own cannon in a recent podcast interview, the service’s top official described the issue as “SO (expletive) infuriating.”

Secretary of War Dan Driscoll supported a 3D printed copy of the FOB-sized parts used in the wheel wells of the powerful M777 Howitzer Cannon.

“This part is now backordered until mid-2027 if you want to get it from the manufacturer,” Driscoll said on a September 25 episode of the Shawn Ryan Show. Soldiers have discovered that they can print 3D for around $2, he added, but historically they have been forced to use manufacturer parts.

Driscoll said 80% of the famous 101st Airborne division’s how shellguns are currently in operation due to the issue of getting some or similar through official channels.

This issue stems from a restrictive contract, and contracts Pentagon signs with a defense company that mostly provides contractors with the right to maintain and operate weapons systems for sale to the military.

But that struggle will soon change after the Trump administration declared support for a bipartisan Senate proposal that would disgrace the military’s “right to repair” by requiring contractors to share the parts, tools and information needed to maintain equipment.

Provisions written by Progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren, D. Massachusetts, former Navy Seals and Senator R-Montana are included in the Senate’s Holdings Policy Bill for the 2026 fiscal year.

“It’s time for service members to strengthen their troops by repairing their equipment, saving billions of dollars in taxpayer dollars and doing repairs faster,” the senator said in an exclusive joint statement to USA Today. “We fought hard for this common sense solution because we believe our service members are better than our broken status quo.”

Manufacturers have historically opposed laws on the opposite side, including those focused on non-military markets. They argue that the law can compromise intellectual property and trade secrets, but Watchdog groups and experts argue that intellectual property concerns are exaggerated.

However, the military leadership has not supported this issue and continues to highlight the issue of proper repair.

Navy Secretary John Phelan explained in June that in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee that the events of the war with China would make it difficult for the navy to run equipment on the other side of the world.

Phelan said he visited the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft airline and discovered that the crew were not permitted to repair the ship’s galley or its elevator oven. In some extreme cases, the military is flying contractor repair technicians and shipping them to sea for serious repairs.

Meanwhile, Driscoll ignored many repair restrictions and ordered the Army to do whatever it takes to get critical equipment back online, such as the 101st Airborne Division’s Howitzers.

“You have actions that seek all this benefit from (contractors), which is reasonable, but you can’t maintain the equipment,” he said. “So what we said was, “f —–it, we’re just going to do the right thing.”

NYC Public Housing Buildings Partially Collapse in the South Bronx

At about 8:10am on October 1st, New York City firefighters received reports of a gas explosion from the 20-storey building.

play

NEW YORK – On October 1st, a chimney spanning the entire 20-story public housing building in the South Bronx collapsed into the boiler room, with a large spread of exposed, broken bricks on the corner of the rising.

The explosion at about 8:10am is believed to come from a vast ventilation shaft in the New York City Housing Authority building on Alexander Avenue, officials said. The explosion is set to send debris down the street below, and the debris of the collapsed shaft is demolished.

In the chaos, no one was injured or killed, authorities said.

Footage from a local TV news station showed debris fell on city streets and buildings were blown away by several stories. Residents stood outside the public Mitchell House complex and chatted about what they had heard and seen as the streets and sidewalks remained closed late in the morning.

An early report indicates that the explosion came from a chimney inside Mitchell Houseville. The team is investigating the extent of damage reported as “external damage to the chimney,” Nicha said.

“We are very fortunate at this point, with no lives lost or injuries,” Mayor Eric Adams said.

Residents say issues with public housing buildings are being ignored

Several residents were called to city officials after officials made an update at a press conference in front of the building late on the morning of October 1st.

“You’re coming here now, right?” Reinaldo Lopez, 43, said he was standing a few feet away. Residents of the nearby Mitchell home have been a building for over eight years, and Lopez said neither the building management nor the city inspectors have responded to days of daily issues with holes in the building, corridors, or recent gas smells.

Carmen Luciano, 64, a 28-year-old Mitchell House resident, also smelled the gas and asked to replace the kitchen stove. She heard an explosion while visiting St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church in the morning and saw the debris fall to the ground.

She also has a black mold in the apartment, she said in Spanish.

“Hasen Nada,” she said, they don’t do anything. “Cobran la Renta” They just collect rent.

Lopez pointed to a long-standing New York City problem: scaffolding. He recalls the scaffolding in front of the building, which had partially collapsed as he lived in Mitchell’s house.

“At the end, you haven’t repaired the building,” he said. “Now they’re going to wrap the whole thing around them. How much of that scaffolding is there?”

Disassembly to begin removing debris

Some residents on the wing near the chimney have been evacuated, and crews are working to ensure the building remains structurally healthy for residents, officials said.

Adams said all gas into the building was turned off. Demolitions will begin on October 1 to remove the remains of the collapsed chimney, access the basement and boiler rooms, and restore services to the building, including heat, hot water and cooking gas, said Emergency Management Committee Zachary Iscol.

Meanwhile, some residents expressed concern about the next steps to determine safety and minimize disruption in their lives, said Bronx Rose President Vanessa L. Gibson.

“This has happened before,” Gibson said. “I’m very grateful that no one has lost their lives. No one is in the hospital.”

Investigators working to determine the cause of the collapse

Officials said at a morning press conference that it was the ventilation shaft that collapsed in the Motthaven area building.

“I believe that’s where the explosion occurred,” New York Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker added that investigators will work to determine the exact cause.

Adams noted that October 1st is the day housing authorities turn on the boiler and switch to a seasonal heating system. According to NYCHA Chief Operating Officer Eva Trimble, boiler systems in all public housing complexes have been tested before they are turned on during the cold season.

City emergency management officials said alternative routes should be used as people expect traffic delays and paramedics to be close to the area.

The city’s Buildings Department told X that the inspector was part of an investigation at Mitchel Houses, Nycha.

The collapse of previous NYC buildings was disastrous

The October 1 collapse comes after previous building collapses in recent years have driven out residents, causing injuries and at least one person’s death.

In April 2023, a Manhattan parking garage pancakes itself and sent cars that fell on each other as the concrete floor fell to cellar levels. One person was killed and several were injured. Everything was a car park garage employee. Investigators decided earlier this year that the collapse was caused by fraudulent structural corrections by employees.

In December of the same year, another Bronx apartment building partially collapsed, moving more than 140 residents, miraculously causing only two minor injuries. Previous inspections of the building found a dangerous situation.

This is a developing story. Please check for updates.

13 “AI Proof” Jobs that Do Not Require a University Degree

play

If you think most Americans have graduated from college, think again.

Going to university is an American rite of passage. However, not everyone goes to university and not many students graduate. According to the Education Data Initiative, only 38% of Americans over the age of 25 are university graduates.

A report published by Resume Creation Service Resume in May identifies 13 careers that offer good wages and long-term stability and do not require a university degree. Better yet, none of the jobs could be replaced by AI.

The analysis “focused on three or four fears people have now,” said Keith Spencer, a career expert in resumes. Americans are worried about signs of a softening job market. They are worried about the cost of the university and whether the degree is still worth it. And employees in many fields fear that AI or robots, or other non-human hands, could be wiped out to replace them.

Their fear is unfounded. Recent research shows that some service companies in the New Jersey area of upstate New York have expanded their employment or plans over the next six months for AI.

Despite the slow creep of automation, many fields still require human touch. To create this list, Resume has now found a career that only requires a high school diploma and pays at least $50,000 a year. This report uses data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“They all have some similarities in terms of the need for important human interactions,” Spencer said. “Maybe in an unpredictable environment, manual dexterity or a high level of creativity is required.”

This list has two parts: jobs with relatively low AI risk and positions with “moderate” AI risk based on human decision-making needs, physical labor, personal interactions and other factors.

Some of the jobs listed below require a “level of related experience” Resume reports. But apparently, nothing requires a university degree.

Here’s the list. This includes job descriptions for less familiar positions and medians for all payrolls.

Supreme Court rejects Trump’s bid to bring Lisa cooks straight away

0

play

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has rejected his bid to fire her immediately from the central bank, which has broadly impacted the economy through interest rate decisions, saying President Donald Trump must allow Lisa Cook to remain in the Federal Reserve for now.

The High Court said it would hear verbal debate on the January issue, not Trump’s urgent request for her to be fired.

The judiciary is already considering a similar case with the Federal Trade Commission. This raises the question of whether Congress or the court can protect independent leaders from presidential removal.

The FTC case is scheduled to be discussed in December.

In the Federal Reserve dispute, Trump asked the High Court on September 18 to suspend a federal judge’s ruling that prevented Cook, the first black woman appointed by his Democratic predecessor, from firing him from filing Cook, the first black woman to serve as Fed governor.

The judge has been criticized for making such a massive decision quickly without a full briefing involving oral discussion.

Cook’s lawyer previously said the High Court would eliminate her and endanger “a financial market shock wave that cannot be easily revoked.”

Presidential forces’ Trump test restrictions

Trump is examining the limits of his enforcement, including over-institutions designed to be insulated from political influence.

In May, the Supreme Court said Trump could fire without reason on members of two such agencies that address labor issues.

However, most also state that the Federal Reserve is different from the National Labor Relations Commission and the Merit System Protection Commission.

The courts are likely to call the central bank “uniquely structured, semi-private entities” and support the constitutionality of the provisions that prevent judicialists from being removed without reason.

But Trump argues that he has ample legitimacy. Trump said he fired Cook in August, where he allegedly made false statements about his mortgage application before beginning his 14-year term in 2023.

Cook says Trump’s real beef is a policy debate

Cook has not been charged with a crime and has not had the opportunity to formally respond to Trump’s claim that she declared multiple homes as “major residences” in order to earn a more favorable interest rate in her second home.

The documents reviewed by Reutershow declared a “home of vacation” and a second property against other documents cited by Cook’s critics.

The law allows Fed members to be removed “for a cause,” but does not elaborate on what qualifies or designates the cause of a procedure to prove that someone has committed a disqualification.

Cook argues Trump’s allegations are an excuse to fire her because of her stance on monetary policy.

“The president insisted on removing the governor only after repeatedly criticizing her and her colleagues for not making a monetary policy choice that prioritized short-term growth over long-term stability,” her lawyer told the Supreme Court.

Congress set its supply to be independent of political pressure

The Fed sets interest rates that help determine the pace at which the economy grows. Trump made Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell because lowering interest rates can’t spur growth.

Although the president often roared with criticism during his second term, Congress established the Fed’s board of directors in 1913 with seven members, making economic decisions independent of political pressure.

Cook’s lawyers have focused on the tradition of independence in their discussions.

“An order allowing Governor Cook to be removed from this court will therefore threaten serious harm to the American economy,” her lawyer told the Supreme Court in a September 25 filing.

Trump says court reviews are limited

The Justice Department argued in a September 18 filing that the “for a cause” provisions of the Federal Reserve Act were broad and ruled out members being fired for no reason or someone being fired based on policy disagreements.

And as long as the president has other justifications, the reasons cannot be reviewed by the court, Attorney General John Sauer told the Supreme Court in a September 18 filing.

“The Federal Reserve plays a unique and important role in the American economy,” Sauer wrote.

Sauer also said that Cook had no right to get an opportunity for a formal response, and in any case, when Trump first raised them, she refused to counter the allegations.

“Because he refused to attract the president’s attention or challenge important facts, Cook cannot complain that the process is insufficient,” he writes.

Cook’s lawyer said she has the right to formally inform the president about why she wants to remove her and must give her a hearing through a process that the court can review.

“The bottom line is this. There must be some meaningful check on the president’s ability to eliminate Governor Cook, contrary to the infinite claims of the president’s authority,” they wrote.

Top Vintage Toyota Trucks and SUVs Deserve a Great Money for Collectors

0

play

Toyota has been sending trucks and SUVs overseas for the same length of time that it has cars, but some may argue that these task-centric machines gave the brand the first toe in North America. There are also attractive, and sometimes affordable Toyota trucks that have made a big impression on collectors, as name plates like Land Cruiser and 4runner lead the price.

It shows that Toyota trucks are the hottest product among people who want to drive a classic that is different from the Ford, Chevrolet, or Dodge parked in their neighbor’s garage.

1960-1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

That’s not a typo. The prototype Toyota SUV enjoyed one of the longest production runs in automotive history. The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 generation was the brand’s global coming out party. The vehicle was given a lesson learned after World War II by building similarly sized truck-based sports utility vehicles and combining them with incredible durability, producing two-door off-road machines that can throw away the top and starve 4×4 options in the market that mimics the American open-air jeep.

Over the long lifespan, the FJ40 was given a long list of drivetrains and upgrades, but most models wobbled between the poles of an inline six-cylinder engine and a four-cylinder diesel. The low-power but robust Land Cruiser acquired disc brakes, air conditioning and power steering by the time it blew the strings in the early 1980s. The FJ40 left the US in 1983 (only 300 trucks are imported), but stayed in Canada in another year, and continued trucks were built in Brazil until 2001.

Today, the FJ40 is a highly sought after classic Toyota truck, whose value floats just above the $90,000 mark for the initial Mint Condition model. Hundreds of thousands of people have been built around the world, but it is difficult to find a clean example as it has been strictly mandated for decades in some of the roughest conditions imaginable. This may leave the commonly present Toyota FJ40 values strong.

1973-1978 Toyota Pickup

It was sold as a Hilux almost everywhere else, but Toyota’s second effort to attract the attention of American truck buyers was known simply as a US showroom pickup.

Cargo beds were shipped across the sea to the cargo bed to install chicken taxes at ports that effectively banned small trucks assembled abroad. To be easy to pilot, comfortable to drive, have plenty of power from a four-cylinder engine and improve its transport potential, the pickup provided a real replacement for its current status. In fact, it was so successful that by the end of the decade, Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet had imported and Riverd their own small trucks.

Though not as adventurous as the FJ40, the pickup was initially two-wheel drive, these models were historically not handled with child gloves by their original owners. Japanese vehicles in the 1970s also had to deal with extreme trends towards rust when exposed to damper climates and salt. Attrition keeps survivors priced in the $13,500-$20,000 range, and that number could rise as they acquire prices from the full-size classic truck market.

1980-1992 Toyota FJ60/FJ62

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 expanded the awareness of NAMEPLATE among American SUV buyers in the 1980s due to the practicality and plus size dimensions of the four-door. Here was the movement of four-wheel-drive people who were far more comfortable driving every day than their predecessor had sacrificed almost anything when it came to off-road insights.

It is an exaggeration to say that the FJ60 Landcruiser had a massive appeal in the US, and that is heading towards SUV domination, which still applies today. Still, the Inline 6 provided a decent motivation for the long-wheel base truck, featuring three rows of seats for up to seven passengers. As long as two of these riders are OK with a bench mounted on the folding side of the Targo Bay.

When the FJ62 arrived in the 1988 model year, they replaced the round headlights with round headlights, but mostly retained the same shape and styling as their previous SUV. For more important upgrades, fuel injection, automatic transmission and power accessories helped keep the drivers down even further.

The FJ60 and FJ62 are highly praised by collectors who use trucks for long distance adventures. This is because the space inside and mechanical simplicity makes it a great off-road buddy that can easily repair anything if something snaps on the trail. Additionally, the driver quality edition is over $25,000, but it’s cheaper to buy and easier to find than the FJ40.

1981-1983 Toyota Draw

If you’re looking for the rarest Toyota trucks, the Trekker is your holy grail. In the early 1980s, a small batch of pickups (around 1,500 or so) was altered by Winnebago with a contract with Toyota, covering the cargo floor with a fiberglass top and adding a second seat in the back.

If the concept sounds familiar, that’s because the trekker is essentially the direct ancestor of the Toyota 4runner.

Trekkers are extremely difficult to find, and prices range from $10,000 to $50,000 depending on the mileage, condition and how optimistic the seller is. This is an important part of Toyota’s history that influenced one of the automaker’s most popular models just a few years after the SUV concept proved to be viable for Toyota outside the Land Cruiser family.

photograph: mecum auction

1984-1988 Toyota Pickup

Speaking to certain types of movie nerds, “1985 TOYOTA SR5 XTRA CAB,” it could potentially make them go back to the future. Adorned with roll bars, lift kits and off-road lights, this black Toyota pickup made stars from the company’s humble trucks and gave them promotional blitz that made money not available to buy outside the silver screen.

Hollywood’s screams helped, but this pickup era has also made Toyota a hit in the trucking mainstream with its own merit. Competing with recent compact entries from Detroit like the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, the pickup enjoyed a good reputation for toughness and reliability, and it was nearly impossible to kill its basic four-cylinder motor (which added fuel injection to the mix in 1985). He also graduated from the later edition to V-6 Power.

Also outside the 4×4 scene, these Toyota pickups were popular with mini truck fans, creating the neon underglow street machine that took over Southern California the following decade.

The price for the Marty McFly Specials is above expected, but it has a cluster of average ASKs around the $20,000 mark.

1984-1988 Toyota 4runner

When Toyota officially joined the small SUV game, it made a 4Runner and a big splash. Like The Trekker, 4Runner borrowed machines and platforms from the pickup. In fact, the majority of the first generation 4runners (known in other markets as Hilux Surf) were nothing more than pickups with removable fiberglass bedspreads and body-on-frame sheet metal when rolled from the boat to the dock.

Another victim of the chicken tax, Toyota relied primarily on dealers to work on seats and seat belts within the 4runner freight area. The power came from the four-cylinder, turbocharged four-cylinder, and the V-6 engine that roughly matches what the pickups offer towards the end of the run. The independent front suspension has also arrived on later models.

The second generation 4runner could be something with a greater appeal (certainly reflected in the number of sales) as it added an additional set of doors and a fully completed passenger compartment. That makes the original 4runner one of the most collectible Toyota trucks, but it has a more unusual personality than what you’re used to in modern SUVs. For good terms examples, try to pay in the $30,000 range.

1990-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80

The classic Toyota Land Cruiser is a little bit of a two-person. Not only did this full-size four-door arrived in the US under the Toyota Banner, it also donated the platform and much of it to the Lexus LX450, the first off-road SUV built by the automaker’s new luxury brand.

Toyota pushed the sides of the FJ80 into modern times, adding coil springs instead of the front and rear leaf designs, but it also celebrated its legacy with a robust, unsleek six-cylinder engine for production for the first few years (with a twin-cam unit that arrives mid-boy).

The FJ80 is a vehicle sandwiched between its sturdy past and a future that leaps far more towards the Lexus side of the spectrum. Also, over the past few years its popularity among collectors has exploded. The example directs six numbers and a person who is less than his period, under conditions of about half the amount. Its status as the final analog grand cruiser is undoubtedly playing a role in its surged value.

I love old Toyota trucks and SUV collectors

Dick Durbin declines the award from the Catholic Church. Pope Leo weighs

0

Pope Leo XIV had no problem with Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin receiving a lifetime achievement award from the church. Some Catholic priests did.

play

  • Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin was scheduled to win the award from the Archdiocese of Chicago on November 3rd.
  • Some Catholic priests opposed the award because Durbin supports legal abortion.
  • Pope Leo XIV said it would be okay to give him a prize for his “overall work” and service on behalf of immigrants.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – Sen. Dick Durbin declined the Lifetime Achievement Award given to him in November by Chicago’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese.

The award was intended to acknowledge his support for American immigrants, but some in the church said Durbin, who supports abortion rights, was not worthy of the church’s praise.

The backlash against the award came, among other things, from Springfield Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, who wrote last week that Durbin was “not worthy of receiving the proposed award or Catholic honor.” News about Durbin’s decision to decline recognition was posted on the Archdiocese website.

One person who seemed untroubled by Durbin’s award winning was Pope Leo XIV. The Pope was asked on September 30th before Durbin rejected the award if he deserved it, saying:

“If the senator is not wrong, I think it’s important to see the overall work that the senator has done during his 40 years in the US Senate. I understand the difficulties and tensions. But as I have spoken in the past, I think it’s important to see a lot of issues related to church teaching.”

Durbin, who had been in the Senate since 1997, announced in April that he would not seek reelection.

Cardinal Brands Küchtch, who leads the Archdiocese, said in a statement that the award for Durbin was “particularly recognised his singular contribution to immigration reform and his unwavering support for immigration.”

Many other Catholic bishops across the country gathered around Paprocky’s opposition to Durbin’s honor, including Bishop Carl A. Kenme of Wichita, Kansas, a former priest of Springfield Parish.

Durbin’s “long-standing views and consistent votes promoting abortion will clearly disqualify him for this award,” Kemme said in a September 25th statement.

Paprocki reaffirmed that Durbin was not permitted to receive communion, one of the central sacraments of Catholic faith, until he repented of the voting record in support of abortion.

MSGR, then pastor of Durbin, in the Blessed Sacramental Diocese as early as 2004. Kevin Van, now bishop of Orange, California, said Durbin should not be approached for communion. Paprocki’s predecessor in Springfield, Bishop George Lucas, now Archbishop of Omaha, Nebraska, had banned Durbin.

If Durbin won the award on November 3, when first planned, it would disrupt Catholics.

Durbinhas called for comprehensive immigration reform. He was critical of President Donald Trump’s so-called “Operation Midway Blitz,” the immigrant Roundup taking place in Chicago.

Illinois’ Mary Kate Xander said in a statement on the right to life that Durbin’s decision was a “winner” for the group’s move.

Guest Author: Or Hillel, Green Lamp

Applications form the basis of how organizations can provide services, connect with customers, and manage critical operations. All transactions, interactions, and workflows run in a web app, mobile interface, or API. Its central role has made the application one of the most attractive and frequently targeted entry points for attackers.

As software becomes more complex, security risks are the same as they span microservices, third-party libraries, and AI-powered features. Traditional scanning methods struggle to accommodate rapid release cycles and distributed architectures. This has opened the door to AI-driven application security tools. This brings automation, pattern recognition, and prediction capabilities to areas that once relied heavily on manual reviews and static checks.

Best Practices for Using AI AppSec Tools

To get the most value from AI-powered application security, teams need to follow some key best practices.

  1. Shifting security left: The tools are integrated early in SDLC, causing problems before production.
  2. Combining approaches: Use AI tools along with traditional SAST, DAST, and manual reviews to cover all bases.
  3. Enable continuous learning: Choose solutions that will improve over time by taking threat intelligence and user feedback.
  4. Put the human in a loop: AI needs to be enhanced, not replaced, of human judgment. Complex decisions still require security experts.
  5. To suit compliance: Make sure your AI-powered survey results can be mapped to regulatory requirements such as SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR.

  • Bear 32 Chunk crowned Fat Bear Week’s 2025 champion.
  • Chunk defeated the runner-up Bear 856 with over 96,000 votes.
  • The annual contest celebrates the survival of brown bears at Katomai National Park in Alaska.
  • Chunk is described as one of the biggest bears along the Brooks River and is patient with injuries.

There’s a new Fat Bear Week winner.

Fat Bear 32 Chunk was named the 2025 Champion of the annual Park Contest on Tuesday night, September 30th.

Of the over 160,000 votes, he became the top 856 of the top veteran male bears, 32 chunks of bears, weighing over 1,200 pounds, and the top 856 of the top veteran male bears.

This draw has resulted in two thick adult male contestants: Champion Bear 32 Chunk and Bear 856.

The Bear 32 Chunk received 96,350 votes and 856 votes.

According to the National Park Service, Fat Bear Week is an annual celebration of success and survival.

In total, 20 brown bear competitors from the Brooks River in Katmai National Park and Alaska Preserve competed in this year’s chowoff, beating salmon all summer.

The contest where the Bears compete for the vote to win the Portal Crown is headquartered at the edge of King Salmon Park, about 290 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Here’s what you need to know about the two finalists and the 2025 winners:

Bulk: See Finalists

Bear 856 is frequently raised before and after the 32 chunks of bear 32 chunks of photos, before the occupation.

Winner: Bear 32 chunks

The Fat Bear Week website describes Chunk as one of the biggest bears along the Brooks River. It feasts the east bears of Katmai’s famous bears with salmon all summer.

His features include narrow sets of eyes, strong brow ridges, “a distinctive scar at his muzzle, a broken but healing jaw.” It is believed he may have permanently injured his jaw in this past mating season with another bear.

Initially there were concerns that Chunk could maintain control along the river and pack enough pounds to survive the upcoming winter, but the event’s website states that “Chunk used his resolve and adaptability to endure through injury.”

Runner-up: Bear 856

Bear 856 is another large adult male, according to the Fat Bear Week website, and “has an assertive nature equal to his size.”

For over a decade he was “the most consistently dominant bear on the river.” But now that he is in his mid-twenties, Bear 856 carefully chooses to fight and often succumbs to the larger bear.

The website says he is also patiently fishing in less productive areas of the river and “when fishing, he often licks his lips.”

Who won Fat Bear Week last year?

Last year’s Fat Bear winner was Mama Bear 128 Glazer, which earned over 70,000 votes.

Despite her turnip being killed by her opponent in July 2024, Glaser pulled out and crowned the 2024 champion.

Glaser was transported to the Brooks River in Katmai National Park in 2005 and was protected as an Alaskan turnip.

New York courts should reject Texas’ attempts to enforce abortion bans across that border

0

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is asking New York judges to declare New York’s Department of Reproductive Medicine unconstitutional law. They are unlikely to do so. State officials in New York have so far presented a united front against anti-abortion authorities’ efforts to target New York residents. Furthermore, the law is on their side.

Whether the full faith and credibility clause requires a nation like New York to grant a civil sentence of a nation like Texas depends on whether the judgment in question is essentially punishment, despite the fact that it arises from a civil lawsuit rather than a criminal prosecution. As I argue in my new paper, civil judgments arising from violations of the state’s abortion ban should be understood as prison judgments, as they not only provide an identifiable individual quest to prove personal benefits, but also seek to prohibit and punish the defendant’s actions in order to protect the health and morality of the public. This reasoning could give states with shield laws more protection against state overreach with abortion bans.

Most states that allow abortions have adopted Shield Acts to protect reproductive care providers. Similar to the Immigration Sanctuary Act, New York’s Reproductive Health Care Shield Act prohibits state and local government employees from working with out-of-state stakeholders’ investigation or enforcement efforts. Several states, including New York, explicitly apply these protections to activities that providers carry out via telehealth, even if patients are out of state, while physically present within their state.

If an anti-abortion plaintiff tries to tame a civil judgment issued by a court in a state that prohibits or restricts abortion, the court clerk or judge must determine whether they are present. Prohibited Because they accept judgment based on the Shield Act of their hometown, Required To recognize it under full faith and trust clauses, or It is permitted Refuses recognition if there is no command in some way. If applicable, the full faith and credit clause and its implementation law prevails the state’s shield law. Without applicable federal commands, the clerk or judge may have the discretion to refuse recognition under existing doctrines, even in the absence of the On-Point Shield Act.

If default decisions provided by courts in prohibited states can be enforced outside the realm using mechanical recognition rules, they can be a highly effective tool to eliminate the need for more complicated legal manipulation by abortion opponents. This approach stymie the efforts of state officials to fulfill their democratic mission to protect reproductive health providers.

Texas vs BrookIt was filed for Ulster County in July at the Supreme Court of New York, Texas vs. Carpentera default ruling issued in February by Collins County District Court, Texas, against New York physician Maggie Carpenter. The Texas court order bans carpenters from “prescribing abortion-inducing drugs to Texas residents,” and orders Texas to pay civil fines and fees in excess of $100,000 as a punishment for violating the Texas abortion ban. Paxton then attempted to arrest Texas sentence in New York by filing a motion seeking summary judgment in place of a complaint in the county where Carpenter’s medical practice is located. Citing the New York Shield Act, the county clerk refused to submit Paxton twice. Paxton then filed a petition in Ulster County, citing full faith and credit clauses, and asked the court to order a summary judgment issued by the New York State Court against the carpenter.

The Texas debate is central to how states relate to each other within our federal system. The Supreme Court balances the constitutional principles of national sovereignty by determining that state courts must generally recognize the civil judgments of sister states, but does not need to recognize prison judgments in accordance with the principles of anti-enforcement borrowed from international law. Allowing a state to enforce the law beyond its own boundaries would violate the principle that states are “equal sovereigns within the federal system.” As Judge Robert Jackson explained in the 1945 Legal Review Clause, when the party asks the court to enforce a judgment issued by a sister state under the prison sentence rules, the court’s courts are “permission to investigate the cause of the case that has been merged with the judgment.”

The most detailed treatment of the Supreme Court of Prison Judgment Rules is published in Huntington v. AtrilIt was decided in 1892. The court explained in Dictah that “criminal law” is not synonymous with criminal law. Criminal law may also include civil laws with criminal purposes for the purposes of determining the full faith and credit obligation of a court’s state. According to Huntington“The “test of whether the law is punished in a strict and primary sense” depends on “whether the wrong thing is being asked to be saved.” “The violations and violations of public rights and obligations that affect the entire community are considered a community.”

While there are large variations in criminal judgments, ignoring sister state judgments is not merely because respecting them contradicts the court’s public policy choices. The Supreme Court emphasized that “exceptions to public policy” are not found in a ruling of full faith and credibility.” Fauntleroyv. LumIt is beneficial to have emerged from the last century of interstate cultural wars over gambling in 1908. The court overturned the Mississippi Supreme Court’s decision to reject Mississippi’s decision and refused to recover to a private plaintiff seeking a Missouri ruling ordering defendants to pay civilian gambling liabilities against the defendant’s objection that the deal was made in Mississippi and was illegal under the state’s state gambling ban. Mississippi’s (failed) resistance was based not on the idea that Missouri’s decision was a punishment, but on the idea that it would enforce Missouri’s decision to violate Mississippi’s public policy to ban Mississippi’s gambling.

Rather than relying on “public policy,” the Supreme Court’s explanation of criminal judgment rules derives a line between the clear public punitive purpose of some civil proceedings and the purpose of private relief for others. in Huntingtonthe Supreme Court has assumed that state laws that impose civil liability could be one of the “semi-criminal” laws “cannot be enforced in a foreign or state” if the maintenance of a case under such law “will (ing) control (instruct) the punishment imposed on criminals against the state.” Ultimately, the court found that the New York law in question was “a civil remedy in a private lawsuit only with creditors, and a relief for him as measured by the amount of his debt.” The joint and past fascinating laws that were the basis for the New York ruling were intended to provide “individually” remedies rather than providing justice that “incorrectly to the public.” The court therefore held that the full faith and credibility clause required the Maryland court to recognize and enforce the New York decision.

As other jurists have pointed out, the state Supreme Court occasionally relies on criminal judgment rules to refuse to enforce sister state laws or civil cases. However, these events are rare because states are usually very lenient in realizing that they choose their sister state’s judgment based on comity. As a result, judges in shielding states have little direct on-point precedent that draws a line between federal obligations and non-comprehensive judgments that cause criminal judgments that do not.

My paper argues that litigators and judges should look to precedents in other areas of law. Parent’s country Doctrine and federal customary law was developed to resolve public nuisance cases on interstate highways and interpret the meaning of designating a specific civil case as a punishment for violations of “public rights and obligations” in the context of criminal judgment rules. Precedents involving horizontal federalism on relations between state governments coincides with the analysis of courts’ criminal judgment rules and reinforce the reinforcement of recent cases. Prevent such harm in the future.

If a civil judgment in a Prohibited State Court punishes an individual in the name of protecting the health and life of a future pregnant patient and his embryo or fetus, the Shield State court may find, in this situation, a criminal judgment and therefore exempt from the obligation of full faith and belief. therefore, Texas vs. Carpenterprohibiting future conduct and pronounce civil penalties paid to the state under the ban on abortion and violation of the licensing laws is not subject to enforcement.

If the judgment is based on the application of professional care, the award of damages to an individual injured by the defendant’s negligence or professional misconduct is entitled to full faith and credibility, but not so if standard care applied by courts in the prohibited states is derived solely from state laws that punish the state laws to protect the health and morality of a large population. Similarly, a judgment of unlawful death awarded to the complaint of a relative suffering on behalf of an embryo or fetus could be considered a punishment rather than a remedy if the court’s court finds it is based solely on the criminalization of the state, rather than a general standard of care for the professional standards of care that is commonly applied.

Of course, even if Shield State successfully rejects and enforces its ban state’s decision, the BAN state could place a significant burden on out-of-state health care providers with the relief package granted within the borders. Nevertheless, further depicting the scope of prison sentence rules could reduce the calm effect of the threat of cross-border enforcement of the prohibited country and clarify the nature of comparable sovereignty among sister states.

The US landmarks represent the complex past of the nation

0

play

Mount Rushmore is an American icon. The majestic, 60-foot-high sculpted presidential chief overlooking the black hills of South Dakota, has been immortalized in cinemas and remains a bucket list destination for American travelers.

On October 1st, the state’s most recognised landmark marks 100th An anniversary of dedication as a national monument. Although brilliant, it is a site with a history of checkers, loved by some, hatred towards others, and a lasting symbol of America’s complicated past.

“It’s a great point of pride, but for others it’s an evil symbol of the horror that has been done to the Indigenous people,” said Tom Lawrence, a fourth-generation South Dakota local author. “I love Rushmore, but I understand the complicated history behind it.”

More recently, some have come to the idea of adding President Donald Trump’s head to the lineup despite the advice that such feats are structurally impractical. Meanwhile, South Dakota Governor Larry Roden has invited Trump to attend the festival for next year’s Independence Day, marking the 250th of next year.th Anniversary on a site where a fireworks show is scheduled despite tribal opposition.

How was Mount Rushmore created?

By the 1920s, American automobile ownership was growing. And with that was the concept of road trips in an age of unlimited opportunities and Rogers’ wisdom. In 1923, South Dakota historian Doan Robinson took part in a granite bluff 23 miles south of Rapid City, imagining a sculpted monument that could turn the mountainside into a tourist bounty.

“The Black Hills is an absolutely spectacular area, and South Dakota was aiming to portray tourism,” Lawrence said.

Sculptor Gazzon Borgram was chosen to carry out the project.

The site was dedicated to the National Memorial on October 1, 1925, but the sculpture did not begin until two years later. By then, Bolgrum had reconstructed the monument’s focus to express four US Presidents representing elements of American history: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson for its growth, Abraham Lincoln for its development, and Theodore Roosevelt for its development.

Funding was difficult to get. As the National Park Service points out, despite Bolgram’s willingness to finance the project by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, he is confident that he can seek half and match the rest through private donations.

The task was more difficult than he thought, and despite his position, Lawrence said, Boglum constantly lost money.

“He carved a monument, but it was always broken nearby,” he said. “People will say he’ll just go to a gas station in Black Hills, fill the car with gas and drive the car.”

Borglum spent much of the project’s past two years traveling and scrowing for the last funding, Park Service said. He passed away in 1941, when the project was completed. His son Lincoln oversaw the final excavation.

Until recently, the site painted nearly 2.5 million visitors a year before immersing 1.85 million in 2024, according to National Park Service figures.

Why is Mount Rushmore causing controversy?

For the indigenous people of the Great Plains, who have lived in the Black Hills for a long time, the four faces peering into their former homeland represent something completely different. The leaders that emerged in Europe, who oversaw the expansion of white people in Europe and the gods of sacred burial sites, were known to Lakota Su as his grandfather of six.

The 1868 treaty gave Lakota land, but the agreement was cast aside with the discovery of gold. By 1877, seven million acres of Black Hills had been confiscated.

“When they came and started sculptures in the Black Hills, our people didn’t like it, but we didn’t say that even if it was stolen land,” said Darrell Red Cloud, a fifth-generation descendant of Chief Red Cloud, the renowned Oglala Lakota leader who teaches Native American studies at Oglala Lakota University in South Dakota.

In 1970, Oglala Lakota activist Russell is famous for urinating on George Washington’s head in protest during the occupation of a site that he later called a “shrine of hypocrisy” in relation to its reputation as a “shrine of democracy.”

Some include great grandsons of Borglum, while others are seeking the removal of the monument, but others say the more realistic approach is to provide a more complete explanation of the native perspective. Lincoln, for example, is praised for his movement to slavery in America, but is remembered by Lakota for the largest mass execution in American history. It was him when 38 Lakotas were hanged in Minnesota during the Dakota War in 1862.

For a while, Red Cloud served as a guide to Mount Rushmore, where he said he was the only voice that would provide such a perspective. He also gave a cultural presentation at the site Lakota da Kotana Kota Heritage Village, which opened in 2008 along with the presidential pattern of Mount Rushmore.

The site features information on the native origin of the land, but said details remained sparse.

The memorial websites state that “many national park sites occupy spiritual and culturally important places for Indigenous peoples, and have a history that is often damaged by the confiscation and exclusion of Indigenous peoples from these sites.”

“It hurts among our people,” Red Cloud said. “I don’t think it will heal. Telling the truth about what the mountains meant for the people of Lakota would be a big step in the right direction, but I don’t know if that will happen.”

Can I add a fifth face to Mount Rushmore?

Earlier this year, R-FLA Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced a bill that proposed carving President Donald Trump’s face next to Lincoln, but did not provide details on when the project will take place or how it will be paid. The bill did not advance beyond the House Committee on Natural Resources.

This kind of development is probably not possible.

In a letter written to the then first Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1936, Borgrum worked on the idea after the proposal was made to add the face of suffrageist Susan B. Anthony to the monument. He stated that, given the limitations of stones, the concept is probably impossible and does not follow the philosophy of the monument itself.

“If Mount Rushmore were simply an immortal gallery, he would have chosen a mountain range that would have recognized twice as many as the greatest ones that serve longer than most of our official world,” he wrote.

Lawrence said he spoke to experts, similar to the National Park Service. “And they said it was impossible. And it’s a work of art created by someone who was a master of this despite his difficulties. Do you have the right to change the work he has completed?”

As a lifelong resident, he grew up to understand the complex origins of what is a symbol of national pride for him. In some respects, he said, he remains a relic of the past of presents that seek to acknowledge the nuances and imperfections of American history, despite recent efforts to oppose it.

“Growing up, I’ve never heard of the fact that it’s on stolen land,” Lawrence said. “We were told it was a great symbol of the nation. It was on our T-shirts and our license plates. Now we want to understand the whole complicated story.

EU AI adoption delays China amid regulatory hurdles

0

Kent Walker, Google’s president of Global Affairs, has urged the EU to increase AI adoption through a sensible regulatory approach, particularly amid increasing competition from China.

Speaking at the competitive European summit in Brussels, Walker positioned AI as a tool philosophers and economists called “invention of the method of invention.” Executives from Google and Alphabet emphasized that there is a very high stake in the future prosperity and security of the continent.

While acknowledging the recent assertion that it is essential that AI is right, Walker pointed to the EU’s lack of adoption. He highlighted how intense geopolitical competition and government investment in China are driving AI integration across its economy.

“The strategy is paying off,” Walker said. “Latest estimates suggest that up to 83% of Chinese companies already use generated AI, while the European Commission estimates that Europe is adopting around 14%.”

According to Walker, this delay in AI adoption has been exacerbated by a regulatory environment that is becoming increasingly difficult for EU companies to navigate. He said that since 2019, more than 100 new EU regulations have targeted the digital economy, leading to a situation where “more than 60% of European companies say that regulations are now the biggest obstacle to investment in the EU.”

This sentiment is supported by a recent Danish government investigation that estimated that new regulations could impose an additional annual fee of 124 billion euros on European businesses and administrations. Walker also pointed to slow progress in implementing Mario Draghi’s recommendations on EU competitiveness, with only 11.2% of his ideas being adopted in a year. Citing an International Monetary Fund survey, he described fragmentation within the single market. There, internal barriers produce what amounts to a 45% tariff on goods and an astonishing 110% tariff on services.

In response to these challenges, Google Executive proposed a direct three-part strategy for the EU to regain its AI footing. We will build the foundation of smart policies, build recruitment through workforce skills, and expand to support widespread innovation.

The basic steps, Walker said, require simplifying the AI regulatory environment to create a framework that supports innovation like China, while ensuring focus, coordinated and balanced regulations.

“Regulating AI innovation in a way that supports it means focusing on the real-world effects of AI,” he explained. This approach involves filling specific regulatory gaps rather than implementing sweep rules that could suppress beneficial and low-risk applications. He urged regulators to “oversee output, not input, and manage risks and outcomes rather than microcontrolling science.”

The coordinated regulatory framework applies existing regulations where necessary, harmonizing international standards, and helps providers provide the best and latest AI models for EU citizens and businesses. Walker also emphasized the need to design rules that not only prevent harm, but also actively nurture innovation.

Google, he declared, is a dedicated partner in Europe. It has 30,000 employees and a massive infrastructure investment that includes seven data centers and 13 cloud regions. He pointed out that the Commission is currently seeking opinions to shape the agenda and encouraged businesses to share their opinions before the October 14th deadline.

Part 2 of the strategy focuses on building AI adoption in the EU by equipping people and businesses to use these rapidly advancing tools. Walker showed the pace of change by revealing that Google’s new AI model is “300 times more efficient than the cutting edge of just two years ago.”

To ensure that citizens are not left behind, he defended public-private partnerships to accelerate skills training. He mentioned Google’s work over the past decade to help over 14 million Europeans learn digital skills and its 15 million Euro AI Opportunity Fund. Although companies can launch AI pilot projects, they emphasized that it is the government’s role to expand its most successful examples, just like what China is doing for the economy.

Bill’s trust is also central to the increasing adoption of AI in the EU. Walker explained to Google’s Sovereign Cloud and AI Solutions how EU customers can have full control over their data, and through partnerships with leaders such as France’s Thales and Schwarz Group, it ensures that it is managed according to local regulatory requirements and European values.

Finally, Walker explained the third stage: Scale-up. He described the conversation as “just a small part of that possibility,” and tried to move the conversation beyond the chatbots that described AI as being possible for a scientific breakthrough.

He provided powerful examples that are already moving, such as the Alphafold in Google Deepmind. It creates a database of almost every protein known to science, and is currently used by over 3 million researchers worldwide. This tool helps scientists at the University of Malta to better understand the genetic causes of osteoporosis. Another tool, GNOME, is to transform materials science by discovering hundreds of thousands of new materials with potential uses for energy, transport and clean water.

Walker concluded with a call for direct action and reiterating that the tools are ready and the possibilities are clear. “European leaders say AI leadership is at the top of their agenda, and that’s the time to make those ambitions a reality,” he urged.

Google Executives said this could be achieved by clearing regulatory hurdles for innovators, accelerating research through partnerships, expanding adoption of AI tools, ignite a new era of EU growth, and competing with geopolitical rivals like China.

Costco is set to open four new locations in North America this month, including three in the US.

The next store faces seven new openings in August in Canada, Mexico, Washington, Texas, Florida and Nevada, and other openings at the beginning of the year.

Government shutdown begins as Trump, and Democrats dig for the fight

0

The federal government shutdown began in the middle of the night on October 1st, as President Trump and Democrats accused him of not reaching an agreement.

play

WASHINGTON – The federal government was shut down in the middle of the night on October 1 after President Donald Trump and Congressional Democrats accused them of failing to reach an agreement in a bitter conflict over funding.

It marks the 15th government shutdown since 1981, and is not an immediate end as Congressional Democrats demand changes to health policy that Trump and Republicans refuse to entertain.

It is the threat of massive layoffs that looms in the fight, allowing Trump to end the “huge number” of federal workers. In a recent email, the White House Office of Management and Budget said that the goal is workers whose activities “does not align with the president’s priorities.” A pair of unions representing federal workers filed a lawsuit over the September 30th threat.

The shutdown criticism game has also been ratcheted up. The White House website features a clock counting the hours “Democrats shut down government,” but the Democratic National Committee wrote on social media early October 1 that “Republicans own the closure.”

The closure passed 55 votes, which were short of the 60 vote threshold to beat the Democrats’ filibuster after Senate Democrats blocked Republican proposals to keep the government at existing funding levels until November 21st on Tuesday night.

What does government shutdown mean for mortgage borrowers?

Americans hoping to close their mortgages soon can experience some delays as government functions are reduced for purchases or refinances. Here are some things you need to know:

Most mortgages expected by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should not be affected, according to industry participants. However, if you need to verify your Social Security Number, you may run into a delay.

If your mortgage comes from a rural housing program like the US Department of Agriculture, expect delays. As the National Association of Realtors explains in an online memo to members, “New direct and secured home loans, as well as scheduled direct loan closures, will be postponed. Conditional commitments for guaranteed loans are still being reviewed.”

If your mortgage comes from the Veterans Affairs Bureau, you should also expect delays. “Some VA staff and support capabilities may be reduced, which may slow down certifications for approval, evaluation and eligibility requirements,” says NAR.

If they work with housing counselors affiliated with the Housing and Urban Development Agency, the agency may need to reduce or suspend their activities, NAR says.

Buyers in flood-prone regions like Florida and Louisiana may encounter delays as they are not funded by the National Flood Insurance Program. Some lenders may allow you to continue your purchase anyway, but if there’s a storm before you write your insurance, it can cause problems, said Jeff Lichtenstein, president and broker at Echo Fine Properties in South Florida.

“The uncertainty in the market just means that some buyers want to back out,” Lichtenstein told USA Today in an email. “There’s nothing good about these things.”

The White House website has a shutdown clock

Trump is doing everything he can to denounce Democrats for the shutdown, including featuring a shutdown clock on the White House website.

At the top of the website you will see the time since “Democrats shut down government.” There is also a link to a video featuring clips of Democrats criticizing past closures.

The Trump administration has used other government channels to blow up highly partisan shutdown messages, including banners on the Department of Housing and Urban Development website declaring “radical left” shutting down the government.

Democrats say the GOP is responsible for the shutdown.

“Republicans own this closure,” the Democratic National Committee posted on social media early October 1st.

-Zac Anderson

According to the White House, President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order at 4:30pm on the first day of government shutdowns.

Earlier in the day, Vice President JD Vance will appear on “CBS Mornings” at 7am on EST, according to the network.

At 1 p.m., White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt will address reporters during the press conference.

When will lawmakers return?

The Senate will be reconvened at 10am Wednesday. Voting is expected at 11am and again in the late afternoon.

On the other hand, the House of Representatives is not a session at all. Republican Mike Johnson’s speech is taking a break from lawmakers to put pressure on Democrats.

– Zac Shermere

About 750,000 federal employees, from national park workers to financial regulators, could be attacked daily during the closure if they withhold about $400 million in compensation daily, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Other workers in government services, such as military and law enforcement, that are deemed “essential” will continue to work, but will not be paid until a transaction is reached.

– Joey Garrison

Trump also warned that Democrats might fire federal workers under the closure. “We can do things that are irreversible during closures and are grossly irreversible for them. We can cut out a huge number of people, cut out what we like, cut out what we like, cut out what we like during the closure.”

The president later said: “Many profits can get down from the closure. We can get rid of a lot of things we don’t want. They’ll be Democrats.”

The closure is the first since 2019 and came during Trump’s first term, following democratic opposition to Trump’s funding for border walls. It was also the longest closure in 35 days in US history, costing the US economy around $3 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

– Joey Garrison

Democrats have called for a reversal of Medicaid cuts, which Republicans passed this year and include extensions of healthcare subsidies in funding measures.

“He doesn’t understand that if the government closes, people’s health insurance premiums will go up,” New York Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer said of Trump on Sept. 30 from the Senator’s floor.

Trump and Republicans rebutted by accusing Democrats of illegally providing medical care to immigrants in the country. “That’s what they’re claiming, and obviously, I have an obligation not to accept it,” Trump said. Democrats call Trump’s claims a lie and note that undocumented immigrants are not eligible for payments from Medicare, Medicaid, or Affordable Care Acts.

– Joey Garrison

Democrats and Republicans competed to blame the other side for the closure, but it was still unclear who most Americans would blame.

Schumer seized Trump’s threats regarding federal layoffs to claim the closure was Trump’s closure. “Well, it’s there,” said the Senate minority leader. “Trump has admitted that he is using Americans as political pawns. He admits that if God forbids it to happen, he is firing people.

“The Democrats don’t want to close,” Schumer added. “When he says he’s going to do things, he’s taking ownership.”

But Trump and Republicans are betting that the closure will cause political damage to Democrats, despite Republicans controlling the House, Senate and the White House. A New York Times/Sienna College poll shows 65% of Americans believe Democrats should not shut down their government if demands are not met.

Rape has not been resolved as DNA test results are lost in email

0

play

After an investigation by USA Today revealed that police across the country were not following up on DNA evidence from unsolved rape cases, the U.S. Department of Justice has released a report urging them to do so.

However, guidance does not guarantee that the issue will be resolved.

That’s because the federal grant program, designed to help state and local agencies handle untested rape kits, has not addressed the serious flaws revealed by USA Today in 2024. The agency receiving the grant will not be penalized for ignoring the Department of Justice’s recommendations.

The news organization has found that the Grant program has spent nearly $350 million since 2015, but the victim continues to collide with the same obstacles it first came forward months or years ago. Kit is reluctant to leave tests, coincidences, or rough reviews by police and prosecutors, informing people what happened to the evidence gathered from their bodies.

The new report recommends that agencies develop written policies that lay out “expectations, roles, and responsibilities” when evidence from previously untested rape kits matches the profile of the national DNA database known as Codis. These coincidences allow police to link genetic evidence of unsolved crimes to certain people, other crimes, or both. Matches can be key to solving cases, but only if police learn about them and take action.

The policy must ensure that match notifications are internet-based and become part of the case file. So, multiple people can access it, the report says. Today, some notifications are sent by US mail or emailed to a particular individual and lost or ignored if that person changes work. And the pursuit should not end there. The report assigns detectives to each case, sets a time slot for an investigation to commence, and sets up automatic email notifications to senior officials if these are not done.

The new procedure requires new procedures as coincidences from thousands of crimes known as law enforcement “hits” are still shelved, ignored or “overall missed”; the report says.

“If multiple accountability is not in place, a Codis hit can be inadvertently missed and submitted unassigned or untreated,” the report states.

There is no follow-up on thousands of DNA matches in Louisiana

The federal grant program, known as the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, has given money to 90 state and local agencies, including three Louisiana grants.

The state alone is suspected of leaving DNA after at least 2,400 crimes, including murder and sexual assault, according to an email sent by Captain Chad Guidley, the state’s director of the state’s police crime lab, to Louisiana lawmakers and others, according to an email sent by USA Today to Louisiana lawmakers and others. That number is probably high as officials from Jefferson Parish, adjacent to New Orleans, did not report the number to the Crime Institute.

The email says “lack of contact, jurisdiction delays, or investigation backlog” for reasons not to follow DNA matches around the state.

Louisiana Sen. Beth Misell said police and prosecutors need to do better.

“Evidence from the rape kit can bring about accusations against those who committed the attack, which is the first step towards what is worthy of justice survivors,” she said. “We expect that.”

Louisiana data reflects an analysis of 14 representative grant recipients from USA Today.

There are no requirements to investigate DNA matches from rape kits

Institutions receiving federal grants from the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative do not need to use the rape kit, even if the perpetrator is still free of charge.

That remains the same since the news organization’s research was published a year ago. Maryland, for example, returned $600,000 to the federal government last year, according to a report by the state’s Sexual Assault Evidence Kit Policy and Funding Committee.

Additionally, grantees do not need to meet test kit benchmarks, notify victims of the results or investigate them.

Instead, the federal government has contracted with RTI International, a non-profit research organization, to provide recommendations. The Department of Justice pays groups to identify best practices across the country and train investigators. The “Training and Technical Assistance” portion of the grant program costs approximately $29 million for taxpayers.

A spokesman for RTI International refused to make the lead authors of the new guidelines available for interviews. He also did not answer any questions about what prompted them or how they were developed. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice, which oversees the grant program through the Department of Justice’s assistance, did not respond to a request for comment.

Victims are notified of the DNA results of the rape kit

The new guidelines also mention another issue identified in the USA Today 2024 investigation, but did not notify the victim when evidence coincided with the suspect.

Of the 42 victim notification policies obtained by USA Today, we recommend that you contact all or nearby all victims. He said at least six policies require the victim to be contacted only if the authorities believe that they can investigate or prosecute their case.

Of the 14 representative grant recipients in the news organization’s analysis, four with the highest notification rate shared test results with about 1 per 2 kits sent for the test. Others only reached one victim per 15 kits. In both Wisconsin and Orange County, California, officials reached only one person for every 43 kits sent for testing.

Police in Wichita, Kansas have attempted to reach just 17 victims from around 1,100 sexual assault kits. Officials there said that in some cases police learned the suspect’s name as a result of DNA testing but did not share it with the victim. The decision was made because authorities did not plan to pursue the incident and did not want the survivors to re-erupt.

The new federal guidance will instruct agencies to share DNA match news with survivors “in cooperation with your agency’s … protocols,” but will stop stating what those protocols should be. It adds that when notifying survivors of a match, authorities need to explain “the connection between the investigation and potential implications.” According to the report, victims should be supported throughout the process.

For Kim Bergman, who lives near Kansas City, the recommendations have not progressed well.

When she was 19, Bergman woke up half off after he died at a college party. Her friends saw her step into the room she was sleeping with and suspected that she had been raped and called by the police.

USA Today does not identify victims of sexual assault without permission. Bergman, who agreed to use her name and photograph, spoke to USA Today with an executive and told her he went to the hospital for a rape kit test.

“No one remembers following up with me on either side,” she said. “I have never gotten results from the hospital. I have never gotten information from the police.”

It was 2005. Bergman, who was abused by a gymnastics coach as a child, became an advocate for sexual assault survivors. At a press conference 20 years later, she learned that the backlog kit was being tested with funds from the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, and wondered what happened to her.

Bergman called around to find out that her kit had been tested a few years after the party. No one told her because the outcome was negative.

Bergman said she still wanted to know. She believes that conversations about test results could have been an opportunity to provide resources such as counseling.

“Just because there’s no hit doesn’t mean something didn’t happen,” she said. “And when we see sexual assault, people don’t stop on one thing. So we have to do whatever we can to drive these people away or get on the registry.”

The value gap from AI investments is growing dangerously fast

0

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has discovered an expanded crack that separates the elite from the majority of companies struggling to generate AI Masters elites from AI investments.

A BCG survey found that only 5% of companies have successfully achieved the ultimate value from large AI. In contrast, 60% report only minimal profit despite failing to achieve material value and investing heavily in technology.

“AI is rebuilding our business environment much faster than the previous technology wave,” says Nicolas de Bellefonds, managing director, senior partner and global leader of BCG’s AI initiatives and co-author of the report.

“Companies that are gaining real value from AI don’t just automate. They’re restructuring and reinventing the way their business works. And they’re pulling away.”

Top-performing organizations that BCG labels “FutureBuilt” aren’t just successful. They are creating a frighteningly widening gap in AI values. They already generate revenue growth of 1.7 times and EBIT margins of 1.6 times the lagging majority. Beyond isolated experiments, the elite group fundamentally reinvents its business and drives shareholder returns through increased revenue and improved measurable workflows. The remaining 35% of companies are striving to scale up, but admitting they are not moving fast enough to keep up the pace.

Future companies have earned early rewards and are now moving further by reinvesting profits. They plan to increase 64% of their IT budget to AI by 64% in 2025. This will make your overall AI investment 120% higher than your slower competitors.

As a result, future companies expect to see double revenue growth from AI applications and cost savings of 1.4 times. For Laguard, who has no basic ability and produces little value, this creates what BCG calls the “vicious cycle of losing the ground.”

The main reason for this disparity is leadership failure. Among companies that are lagging behind, top management often delegates AI strategies to middle management, failing to clearly express a clear vision for value from investment, spreading resources too thinly across disconnected initiatives.

The secret to success lies in proven playbooks, followed by 5% of the major ones. These companies approach AI as a multi-year board and CEO-sponsored multi-year program with ambitious and well-defined targets.

Almost every C-level leader in future organizations is heavily involved in AI, compared to just 8% of companies that are behind. They cultivate a model of shared ownership between business and IT departments. This is a practice that is likely to employ 1.5 times more likely than their peers. A senior retail business officer told BCG: “We will create a room where we can focus on senior sponsorship and ownership of AI benefits, particularly on senior sponsorship and ownership of AI benefits.”

These leaders don’t just automate existing processes. They focus on reshaping and invention of core business workflows with a large portion of their value. The report found that 70% of AI’s potential value is concentrated on core features such as R&D, sales, marketing and manufacturing. Future companies prioritize this reinvention, compared to just 12% of Laguard, compared to 62% of AI initiatives already rolled out.

Value gap accelerators are the emergence and investment in agent AI that combines predictive and generating capabilities, allowing them to “learn and act autonomously” with minimal human input. These AI agents can be seen as digital workers capable of handling complex workflows from supply chain management to customer service.

Although little has been discussed in 2024, Agent AI already accounts for 17% of total AI value in 2025, and is projected to double by almost 29% by 2028. These leaders prioritize customer experience use cases for agents, with customer service being the top focus of 50% of the company.

“Agent AI is not a concept for the future. It’s already restructuring workflows and redefine roles. Companies need to view it as the next step in scaling AI, not as a starting point.”

“Agents represent a great opportunity, but it’s not just plug and play. Companies need to deal with the impact of agents on existing processes, roles and skills and urgently redesign work outcomes.”

Talent is another important differentiator. Future businesses are actively skilling their workforce to work with AI rather than focusing on unemployment. They plan to raise more than 50% of their internal staff, invest in a wide range of employee AI enablements, and carve out dedicated time for structured learning. This approach is six times more likely than a company to fall behind. It also involves employees twice as often as they co-design and reshape workflows to incorporate AI agents, ensuring smoother recruitment and building trust.

Major organizations avoid the “genai burden” of siloed, vulnerable concepts by building on a central, integrated AI platform. With three times more likely to operate such a platform, you can build a common security and monitoring feature once and then reuse it to accelerate deployment and ensure enterprise-wide scale. More than half of these companies operate on a single enterprise-wide data model, compared to just 4% of stagnant peers, providing quick access to trusted governance data.

The message is urgent as 95% of businesses are behind. The path to success is clearly portrayed, but requires fundamental changes in mindset and organization. BCG gives advice following the “10-20-70 Rule.” Here, transformation efforts should focus only 70% on people and processes, 20% on technology, and 10% on the algorithm itself.

The biggest obstacle to achieving value from AI investment is organization rather than technical, related to people, strategies, and processes. As technology advances and leaders accelerate, the window to catch up is rapidly closing. Companies that have not taken a decisive step will risk permanently remaining.

Trump’s history with government closure? He is not a stranger.

0

The government has repeatedly shut down as Ronald Reagan was president, but Trump has overseen the longest.

play

The shutdown government is a territory familiar to President Donald Trump’s territory, which saw three closures in his first term, including a 35-day closure between the end of 2018 and early 2019. This remains the longest in US history.

Congress urged President Trump’s fourth largest federal government shutdown after failing to pass new spending authorities by the start of Wednesday, October 1st.

“Many profits can get off the closure,” Trump told White House reporters hours before the deadline. “We can get rid of a lot of things we don’t want.”

Leaders of both parties are on the ground, and it is unclear how long this shutdown will last. “I hope it’s very short because real Americans suffer,” Mike Johnson told CNN on September 30th.

Republicans are calling for a suspension solution that will expand current funding levels until November 21st.

Democrats want to cancel the massive Medicaid cuts that Republicans created this summer. They also want to permanently extend the tax subsidies millions of Americans use to purchase insurance in federal and state health insurance markets. Those grants are expected to expire on December 31st, and Republicans say they have time to negotiate later.

A few weeks after not talking to each other as the deadline approached, Trump and four top Congressional leaders left the private White House meeting on September 29th without agreeing to keep the federal government open.

Shutdown timeline

Trump was in office on January 20, 2018 (January 20, 2018) when the government first closed under his leadership.

The three-day closure began when Trump spent between him and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, was protecting these young adults under a childhood arrival program or postponed action for the DACA. Trump ended the program but gave lawmakers six months to come up with alternatives.

However, during budget negotiations, he called for immigration concessions from Democrats. The government resumed after Congress passed a short-term compromise that did not include the immigration clause Democrats wanted.

Three weeks later, on February 8, 2018, the government closed for the second time, but for a short time.

Kentucky’s conservative Republican Sen. Rand Paul added more than $300 billion to the federal deficit, causing the government shutdown when he blocked the Senate vote on the funding bill. The closure ended hours after the Senate and House of Representatives both approved spending measures.

The third closure of Trump’s first term – and the longest in US history – began on December 22, 2018 and continued until January 25, 2019, after Trump demanded $5.7 billion to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. Democrats have completely refused to negotiate with border wall funding until the government reopens.

That standoff has grown for 35 days, leading to one of more than 350,000 federal workers, forcing 400,000 others to work unpaid. Some food safety inspections have been temporarily suspended, garbage has been piled up in national parks, federal landmarks and museums have been closed, and some airports have closed checkpoints due to fewer Transportation Security Bureau officials to screen passengers.

The closure only ended after Trump supported a bipartisan bill that did not include border wall funds he requested.

Trump also became a shutdown battle between conditions. He won reelection in 2024, but before taking office, Trump tried to torpedo the short-term funding bill that the government had been running beyond the inauguration ceremony and beyond March. The Republican-led Congress has passed a bipartisan spending bill with democratic support to avoid shutting down governments before Christmas and Hanukkah.

Not a record number of shutdowns

Trump may have the longest shutdown record, but he has the least shutdown record. The government has been closed eight times in Ronald Reagan’s eight years as president. But everything was short. The longest lasted for just three days.

Jimmy Carter presided over five government closures during his one period of office, the longest lasted for 18 days.

Since 1975, there have been 20 government closures that lasted at least one day, most were held before 1995, with half being very short.

Before the 1980s, even if Congress had not yet approved the new spending plan, it was not actually closed. Instead, according to the Congressional Research Services, agencies often continue to operate with the hope that future funding will be provided.

Later, in 1980 and 1981, U.S. Attorney General Benjamin Vititi wrote a series of legal opinions that established the basis for the government’s closure.
