Does Spencer Pratt have a chance to win the Los Angeles mayoral race?

0

Spencer Pratt emerged as one of the most notorious villains in reality TV history on MTV’s “The Hills” in the early 2000s. Now he’s using the same dramatic strategy in the Los Angeles mayoral race.

play

Before last January, Spencer Pratt was best known as the early 2000s instigator of the girl-next-door show on MTV’s hit reality show “The Hills.”

He rose to superstardom after teaming up with his current wife, Heidi Montag, to embarrass Montag’s former best friend, Lauren Conrad. (Conrad later became a very private designer for Kohl’s and a mother of two.)

In a 2018 retrospective video, MTV highlighted Pratt’s top six “Hills” meltdown moments, all of which involved confrontations with women.

One year after the Palisades wildfires,s Mr. Pratt, 42, who vandalized Southern California and destroyed homes, has announced his candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles.

Twenty years after “The Hills” premiered in 2006, Pratt had finished second to incumbent Karen Bass in the city’s Jungle primary by the afternoon of June 3. He has so far received about the same number of votes as businessman Rick Caruso, who won about 36% in the 2022 runoff against Bass, but ultimately lost by nearly 10 points.

Armed with a decades-long strategy for attracting attention, Pratt has emerged as the leading candidate to unseat Bass, the former congressman who came under fire over his response to the Los Angeles fires. She was traveling abroad to Ghana when a dangerous fire broke out.

And it seems like it was a real-life experience that made him a conservative firebrand. He accused city leadership of incompetence in addressing rising costs, drug use and homelessness rates. Politico journalist Alex Burns suggested that Pratt may be President Donald Trump’s heir apparent. Pratt boasts support from former co-stars Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner, but notably not from his former reality TV adversary Conrad. The coming months will tell whether he can make his hopes as mayor a reality.

USA TODAY repeatedly contacted the Pratt campaign requesting an interview. Pratt’s team has not yet made him available for an interview.

infamous reality show villain

One of the most notable reality TV shows in history, “The Hills” was the successor to MTV’s “Laguna Beach.” Earlier this year, Conrad, Cavallari and their alumni starred alongside their Laguna Beach High School cast and classmates in a lively 20-year reunion special set in the seaside enclave of Orange County.

After leaving school, Conrad and Cavallari starred in The Hills, starring Pratt. The spinoff follows the lives of the provocateur, his current spouse Montag, Caitlyn Jenner’s youngest son, and other twenty-somethings who aspire to Hollywood A-list fame, as well as each other.

The pair, who along with their spouses are known as “Speddy,” made tabloid headlines for their outlandish personal choices. In 2010, at the age of 23, Montag appeared on the cover of People magazine, revealing that he had 10 plastic surgeries in one day.

In 2010, Pratt’s departure from The Hills was surrounded by controversy. He appeared on other reality shows such as “Celebrity Big Brother” and “Marriage Boot Camp,” but failed to garner the same level of public attention as his former co-stars.

Conrad is the most famous of them, and Cavallari, who married and divorced NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, launched a successful jewelry line and starred on E! A show about her life in Nashville. Pratt and Montag directed “New Beginnings,” MTV’s short-lived “The Hills” reboot, which followed the couple, Jenner and other lesser-known stars. However, they never regained the dramatic pop culture status they had in their early 20s.

Will reality TV’s King of Shock be able to surprise Karen Bass?

And then the Palisades fire happened.

“In one January 2025 Instagram post, Pratt was planted in front of the couple’s dilapidated home wearing a T-shirt with the cover of Montag’s 2009 single ‘Body Language’ emblazoned on the front. ‘Stream @heidimontag’s music on any platform, it makes a huge difference!’ Thank you,” he wrote, using Montag’s 2010 single ‘Look How I’m Doin.’

Montag’s 2009 song and 2010 album “Superficial” hit No. 1 on iTunes 15 years after its release. After announcing his candidacy for mayor on January 7, Mr. Pratt immediately lashed out at Mr. Bass, calling him his “worst nightmare.” The shock factor he brought from his 20 years of reality TV ruffled feathers and sparked a national response. Trump himself is also participating in the campaign. “I heard he’s a big MAGA figure,” President Trump said at a press conference. “He’s fine.”

Shortly after announcing his mayoral campaign, Pratt began promoting his personal memoir, “The Man You Hated: Confessions from a Reality TV Villain,” which was released on January 27. Like Trump, he has tapped into popular culture to enhance his campaign. He is reportedly filming a behind-the-scenes show about racing against buses.

In late April, an ad titled “THEY NOT LIKE US,” after Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning song, ran for genre rival Drake and took issue with Bass and Nisya Raman’s home.

In the ad, Pratt claims to live in an Airstream trailer, but after the outlet reported that he lives in the luxurious Hotel Bel Air, he told TMZ, “I’ve never told anyone that I live there.”

Mr. Pratt delighted Republicans during a raucous mayoral debate in early May (he called Mr. Bass an “incredible liar”).

During an appearance on Fox News’ “Gutfeld” last month, he said he hates the current mayor. “These people burned down my house and my mother’s house,” Pratt said.

On the night of the primary, the mayoral candidate posed hand in hand with Montag in a glossy paparazzi-style photo. “LA is coming back,” he captioned the photo.

Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns lift Knicks: NBA Finals analysis

0

play

If Game 1 was any indication of how this series would ultimately turn out, the 2026 NBA Finals will definitely be fascinating.

On Wednesday, June 3, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in a thrilling 105-95 back-and-forth victory, taking an early lead in the best-of-seven series.

With 1:50 left in the game, Knicks All-Star Jalen Brunson hit a huge 3-pointer to give New York a lead they would never relinquish, ending the game on an 11-0 run.

Brunson scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Knicks, who have won 12 straight postseason games.

With this, New York is now three wins away from winning its first NBA title in 53 seasons.

Here are live takeaways from Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 18 points and 12 rebounds, but his biggest contribution was on defense.

Tasked with being the primary defender against Victor Wembaneyama, Towns not only defended his defense, but defended him with a physical and disciplined approach.

Wenbanyama finished with 26 points, but made only 6 of 21 shots, including 2 of 9 3-pointers.

Wembangyama never looked comfortable, taking just four shots in the paint. Towns placed his hands and body on top of Wembaneyama to make him feel his presence. Because of this, Wenbanyama often retreated from the paint and settled for jumpers.

Jalen Brunson’s 30-point performance may get a lot of attention, but Towns had a much better game.

In the first half, the Knicks committed eight turnovers and scored 12 points for the Spurs from those giveaways. New York played fast and tried to match San Antonio’s speed, which was a losing proposition.

New York committed just one turnover in the second half. This allowed us to do a few things.

One led to better, higher quality shots. The other thing is that it has limited the transfer opportunities Spurs have. To be fair, the Knicks did a much better job of getting back on defense in the second half, but New York did a much better job coming out of intermissions in terms of getting to the paint, making extra passes, taking care of the ball, and playing more like they should.

A team may decide to focus its defensive attention on the team’s star player. Considering San Antonio has Wembane Yama, Stephon Castle, and De’Aaron Fox, you might want to trick them into sending help.

But New York came under fire for that tactic, leaving San Antonio’s top 3-point shooter Julien Champagnie open. To make matters worse, the Knicks left him open at corner, where Champagnie excels.

He made 5 of 6 shots and sparked 15 points in the first half, all from beyond the arc, sparking San Antonio’s run. The Knicks can’t continue to treat him like an afterthought.

It’s obvious to say, but Brunson’s adjusted knee changes everything for the Knicks. Brunson returned to the game after a brief stay in the locker room and appears to be back to his normal self. Brunson made four of his first seven attempts in the second quarter after returning to the floor, and was a big reason New York’s offense was consistent during that period.

The injury occurred when Spurs forward Harrison Barnes collided with Brunson’s right knee, which was planted on the court.

Still, if Brunson ends up being affected by this issue, there will be a lot of pressure on Karl-Anthony Towns to be New York’s primary offensive starter, especially if this becomes a clutch game where Brunson can’t play. New York’s offense was a bit of a mess while Brunson was in the locker room.

The Spurs are just four days removed from a very physical seven-game series against the defending champions. They are a very young team and this is the first time they are playing for such high stakes.

It all showed up early in Game 1, with the Spurs playing in such a hurry throughout the set that it looked as if they had gained momentum by that moment. As the first quarter progressed, San Antonio settled in very well and used their defense to create turnovers and make the offense easy.

It became clear very early in Game 1 that Wembaneyama was going to set the tone for San Antonio. Whether it was handling the ball and bringing it up the floor or setting screens in his offensive actions, Wenbanyama was proactive and clearly tried to lead by example.

He made two of his first four shots and finished the first quarter with five points, but San Antonio tends to take advantage of Wembangyama’s energy. It was a decent start for the 22-year-old.

However, the Knicks did a decent job of keeping Wembaneyama in check, not allowing him to take too many easy shots, and limiting him to 13 points on 2-of-11 shooting through three quarters.

‘Alaskan Bush People’ star Matt Brown’s cause of death revealed

Days after “Alaskan Bush People” star Matt Brown, 43, was found dead in a Washington river, the medical examiner’s office has released the results of its investigation into his case.

play

The cause of 43-year-old Matt Brown’s death was revealed days after the “Alaskan Bush People” star’s family announced that his body had been recovered in Washington state.

Brown’s cause of death was determined to be suicide, the Okanogan County coroner confirmed to USA TODAY on June 3. The cause of death was gunshot wounds, and contributing circumstances included “under the influence of methamphetamine” and “subsequent immersion in a river.”

TMZ was first to report the news.

Earlier, his brother Bear Brown confirmed in a video posted on his verified social media channels in the early hours of May 31 that his missing brother’s body had been recovered.

“They found a body in the river a few hours ago and positively identified it as Matt,” Baer told supporters in an emotional update. Their brother Noah “assisted in pulling the body out of the water, and Noah confirmed the identity of the body.”

Matt Brown rose to fame while appearing on Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People, which aired for 14 seasons from 2014 to 2022. The series followed the life of the Brown family in a remote part of Alaska.

“Honestly, I never thought he would hurt himself. He suffered for a long time,” Baer said. “It appears that the injury was self-inflicted.”

Hours later, Noah Brown confirmed in his social media video that he was part of the search and rescue group that recovered the body of his eldest brother, who had his identification and social security card.

Bear sternly asked his followers: “Please be respectful of my family and my mother, and be mindful of the comments you leave.”

“In one of[Matt’s]last videos, he actually talks about how negative people were on his posts,” Baer said. “Please keep in mind that the people on the other side of the screen, the people you’re watching the video with, are real people too. … Leave as many negative comments as you like about me, but please don’t mention my family.”

The family feared for days that Matt Brown was dead.

In a video shared on May 28, Bear Brown explained that she was told that “Matt took his own life” after he was found near a river in Okanogan County, Washington.

“Witnesses say he was seen in or near the river,” he said, adding that police had not found the body. At the time, he said, “I can’t be 100% sure, but it looks like Matt.”

Bear Brown said that during their last conversation, Matt told her that he had “fell off the wagon.”

“I was like, ‘Come on, pick yourself up, dude. We all get depressed, so just pick yourself up. Go to rehab if you need to. You’ve got this,'” Baer said, adding that public speculation that Matt’s family was “shunning him” was false.

Some Indiana Lottery players are upset that they thought they won big money because of their scratch-off tickets, only to find out the actual prize was much smaller.

The Hoosier Lottery has since suspended sales of its new $5 Space Invaders Cash Invasion scratch-off game after reports surfaced that some players were told they had won significantly different amounts than what was listed on their tickets, the lottery confirmed to USA TODAY.

Hoosier Lottery spokesman Jared Bond said in a statement that the lottery “has become aware of a technical issue” with the recently launched scratch-off on June 2.

“We have suspended ticket sales to ensure the integrity of the gaming experience we strive to provide our players,” Bond said in a statement.

Man thought he won $100,000, but the scanner showed $20

One of those players, Indiana resident Mike Fields, told FOX59 he believes he won a $100,000 prize after purchasing four new scratch-off tickets. Fields and his wife were stunned when the scanner later showed the ticket was worth just $20, according to a Facebook post by FOX59 anchor Angela Ganote.

Ganote reported that Fields visited the Hoosier Lottery office in downtown Indianapolis, where he met other players who said they were facing similar problems involving thousands of dollars in winnings. Ganote’s post said lottery officials told players the matter was being investigated and they would be contacted by mail within four to six weeks.

What players need to know

The Hoosier Lottery added a disclaimer to the game’s webpage advising players who wish to complain or appeal their tickets to fill out a formal claim form or contact a lottery representative directly.

Players experiencing issues with the Space Invaders Cache Invasion scratch-off are directed to call 1-800-955-6886 or email Info@HoosierLottery.com. The lottery states that the $5 Space Invaders Fast Play game and associated second chance promotion remain available.

House votes for first time to end Iran war, rejects President Trump

The 215-208 vote, which Republicans had worked hard to avoid, signaled a new period of Congressional anxiety over the conflict.

play

In a severe political blow to President Donald Trump, the House of Representatives voted for the first time on Wednesday, June 3, to end the Iran war.

The 215-208 vote was largely symbolic, marking a new period of Congressional anxiety over the Middle East conflict amid stalled peace talks. Strikes in the region have continued in recent days, despite the White House’s assurances to lawmakers that hostilities have ended.

Four Republicans joined Democrats in sponsoring a resolution asserting the Legislature’s war powers and preventing further hostilities in the region. This came just two weeks after the Senate advanced a similar bill.

Subscribe to “About Politics”: Stay ahead of the midterm elections with our daily politics newsletter.

The Republicans who left the party were Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

“The House of People is sending a message: stop this war,” Massey, a member of the same party but a well-known political opponent of President Trump, wrote on social media after the vote.

In a separate statement, Davidson called on the White House to make America’s purpose more clear: “Define the mission, authorize the mission, and accomplish the mission.”

Democratic Rep. Jared Golden, who sided with Republicans in previous Iran war votes, also made a complete reversal and supported the resolution. Golden, who is leaving Congress at the end of his term, comes from a battleground state in Maine.

Democrats celebrated a political victory, but there were no direct consequences.

“Today, House Democrats, on behalf of the American people, successfully passed the War Powers Resolution to hold Donald Trump accountable,” top House Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, said in a statement. “It’s time for Senate Republicans to do the right thing.”

Earlier in the day, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson continued to support the president’s Iran military campaign despite obvious misgivings within his party.

“We are trying to prevent the largest sponsor of state terrorism from acquiring nuclear weapons,” he said of President Trump. “The commander-in-chief’s first responsibility is to keep the country safe. He has done that. He has proven that every day.”

Lawsuit against Walmart claims Campbell’s spaghetti contained parasites

0

play

A Florida woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Campbell’s Company and Walmart, alleging that she and her child became seriously ill after eating canned spaghetti that she said was contaminated with insects and parasites.

Mary Hubbard claims the product was unsafe and “unfit for human consumption” when it was sold and consumed at her home in Okeechobee County, Florida, in June 2024, according to court filings. According to the complaint, she bought canned pasta at a Walmart store before preparing pasta for herself and her daughter.

After they began eating the food, Hubbard observed insect-like organisms moving within the food, the filing said. The company also claims to have recorded video footage showing contamination inside the product. The lawsuit seeks at least $75,000 in damages.

Defendants include The Campbell’s Company (formerly Campbell Soup Company) and Walmart Inc., as well as affiliated subsidiaries named in the complaint. Campbell’s told USA TODAY on June 3 that the company does not comment on pending litigation, but believes the allegations are “unfounded.”

“We intend to vigorously defend against these allegations,” Campbell’s statement said.

“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. We are reviewing the complaint and will respond appropriately in court,” Walmart spokeswoman Kelly Helbusch said in a statement.

USA TODAY has reached out to the plaintiffs’ attorneys for additional comment.

Lawsuit details disease and contamination claims

The lawsuit alleges that Hubbard and her child contracted parasitic infections after consuming the food. The suit alleges that Hubbard experienced gastrointestinal illness, sepsis and other long-term complications, and that the child complained of nausea, vomiting and abdominal discomfort.

The complaint alleges that the product was contaminated during manufacturing, distribution, and retail handling and was therefore “adulterated” under federal food safety standards.

The lawsuit accuses the companies of failing to maintain proper inspection, testing and quality control systems, which prevented contaminated products from reaching consumers. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that the defendants placed dangerous food products on the market and failed to warn consumers about the potential risks.

The plaintiffs seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and long-term physical and psychological damages.

Other food-related lawsuits

The lawsuit comes amid a recent wave of consumer food and product liability lawsuits involving allegations of inadequate warnings and safety defects.

In a February 2026 lawsuit, a California jury awarded a $25 million verdict to a man who claimed that long-term use of Conagra Brands’ butter-flavored cooking spray caused severe and permanent lung damage and that the company failed to adequately warn consumers about the inhalation risks associated with the chemicals used in the product.

In a separate lawsuit, a federal lawsuit filed in April 2026 in Texas also targets energy drink companies for allegedly contributing to the death of a teenager in October 2025 with inadequate warning labels, raising broader questions about the marketing of products to young consumers and the safety of caffeine.

Most recently, a woman in Virginia sued Outback Steakhouse in June 2026 after she slipped and fell on spilled mashed potatoes, raising broader allegations of negligence and facility safety in a food service environment.

Some Republican states declare June “Nuclear Family Month”

0

play

Several Republican-led states have moved to designate June as Nuclear Family Month or similar observances, creating a contrast with Pride Month.

Tennessee was the first state to adopt the label this year, followed by declarations in Indiana and Alabama highlighting households with mothers, fathers, and children. While supporters frame the event as a recognition of traditional family structures, critics argue that its timing and language amounts to a political stunt to exclude LGBTQ+ families.

“Families led by stable parents, a father and a mother, give children the structure and discipline they need to succeed,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) said in a statement. “Alabama celebrates hard-working parents who strive for a better future for their children.”

“When the government comes and says June is Nuclear Family Month, sure, there’s a bit of an insult going on there,” Chris Sanders of the Tennessee Equality Project told Barron’s.

Arkansas takes a different approach

In Arkansas, Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders took a related but distinct approach, declaring June “Loyalty Month.”

In its May 27 proclamation, the state described the United States as a nation “founded on the values of faith, liberty, and patriotism” and emphasized the role of spiritual institutions in society.

“Cultivating loyalty to God, family, community and nation contributes to human flourishing and supports healthy, stable and orderly societies,” the declaration states.

Bobby Pulido supports James Talarico, but doesn’t include some of his past comments

0

play

Tejano star Bobby Pulido, a Democrat seeking to flip Texas’ 15th Congressional District, supports James Talarico, even if he doesn’t agree with everything the Democratic Senate candidate says.

“Look, do I agree with James Talarico 100 percent? Newsflash: No, it’s okay,” Pulido told USA TODAY.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Pulido said he disagreed with Talarico’s comments that referred to God as “nonbinary,” as well as statements made by the Central Texas lawmaker during a Texas House committee discussion of a bill that would require student-athletes to play sports according to the gender on their birth certificate. In his remarks, Talarico said that “modern science” recognizes “more than one biological sex.”

“There are actually six people. Congressman Hefner, I was honestly surprised,” Talarico said.

Talarico, who is running against Attorney General Ken Paxton in the closely watched Texas Senate race, recently said in an interview with CBS News that he regrets past “offensive” comments.

“Do you think God is non-binary? I don’t use that word. I don’t believe in that,” Pulido said. “Do you think there are six genders? I don’t know where that comes from, but I don’t think so. But the question is, do you think he’d be an infinitely better senator than Ken Paxton?” He replies, “Absolutely,” adding an expletive for emphasis.

Mr. Pulido and Mr. Talarico first endorsed each other at a rally in Weslaco, Texas, in December, before either won the primary and became the Democratic nominee in their respective elections.

Mr. Pulido, a native of the Rio Grande Valley, is seeking to unseat Rep. Monica de la Cruz, the region’s two-term Republican representative who helped flip the region from a Democratic stronghold to a Republican one. Due to recent district redistricting, the “Des Verado” singer hopes to win back heavily Latino areas to Democrats.

Pulido, a Latin Grammy Award-winning singer, first began campaigning in September 2025. Dela Cruz’s campaign gained national attention after he began campaigning as a quinceañera after saying, “This election is not about who I want to perform at my niece’s quinceañera.”

Pulido is not the only Texas candidate embroiled in a close race. Talarico will face off against Paxton in a highly anticipated and competitive race. In recent weeks, Republicans, including Paxton and President Donald Trump, have called Democrats out of line and too radical for the Lone Star State, criticizing their comments on religion and LGBTQ rights and false claims that they are vegan.

“I’m my own man. I believe in what I believe in,” Pulido said. “I think Mr. James is probably a little more to the left than I am on a lot of issues, but I still think he’s a very capable member of Congress and I think he’s a good person.”

“I’ve gotten to know him. He’s a good person. I’m willing to support him over someone who isn’t a good person,” Pulido said.

Terry Irwin reveals which animal made Steve Irwin ‘a little nervous’

Hint: It’s not a reptile.

From scary snakes to big cats, there wasn’t much that made the late Steve Irwin nervous, but when it came to “naughty parrots,” the wildlife expert got a little nervous, his wife said.

“In case you didn’t know, the only animal that made Steve a little nervous was a naughty parrot!” Irwin’s wife, Teri Irwin, posted on Instagram on May 30, along with a photo of her late husband and a red parrot. “Every parrot immediately tried to bite Steve before he could react!”

Irwin, widely known as the “crocodile hunter” for his ability to capture and bring problem crocodiles to safety, died on September 4, 2006, after being hit in the heart by a stingray while filming the underwater film “Ocean’s Deadliest” in Australia. He was 44 years old. The famous conversationalist leaves behind his wife, Terri Irwin, and two children, Robert Irwin, winner of Dancing with the Stars Season 34, and Bindi Irwin, also a Dancing with the Stars winner.

Terry remembers Steve on couple’s 34th wedding anniversary

Terry also celebrated her marriage to Irwin and their move to Australia in an Instagram post on June 2nd.

“34 years ago, an adventure began…I married Steve, moved to Australia, two beautiful children, and a life dedicated to wildlife conservation,” Terry wrote in the post. “My heart is full. I am truly blessed.”

According to Irwin’s Australia Zoo website, Terry Raines, then a visiting tourist, met Irwin just two days after taking over management of the Queensland Reptile and Zoological Park in October 1991. The couple married on June 4, 1992 in Eugene, Oregon.

Irwins Australia Zoo

The park later became the Australia Zoo, and its website says the couple’s “mission was to make it one of the best in Australia, if not the world.”

“Massive efforts have been made to create habitats for all zoo animals to be exhibited in their natural environment,” the report added.

Although Irwin passed away before his vision was realized, Terry and the couple’s two children are committed to ensuring Irwin’s legacy lives on. Australia Zoo now spans over 700 acres and employs more than 500 staff, continuing Irwin’s mission of ‘conservation through exciting education’.

19 Safest SUVs Under $20,000 for Teen Drivers

0

If you’re looking for a safe used SUV for your newly licensed teen driver, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports have you covered.

The organization recently released a list of 29 used cars and SUVs that typically cost less than $20,000, perform well in crash tests, and have highly rated headlights and automatic emergency braking systems that can detect pedestrians.

“Driving poses additional risks for teens, which is why we curate this annual list specifically for teens,” IIHS senior researcher Rebecca West said in a statement. “That said, this proposition is suitable for drivers of all ages looking for a balance between affordability and crash protection and avoidance.”

“A first car is a big milestone for a teenager,” Emily Thomas, Consumer Reports’ associate director of auto safety, said in a statement. “Whether you’re buying a car or deciding which car your family should start driving, these lists can help parents make confident choices without sacrificing safety.”

The USA TODAY Cars team has researched the group’s listings and compiled information for consumers about the hottest SUV models.

1.Mazda CX-5

Recommended model year: From 2018 to 2025. Built after March 2018

Median used price: $13,100

What they said: In his review, Edmunds said, “The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is one of our best small SUVs to drive. It’s sporty in the corners, and its turbocharged engine allows for quick acceleration. But the CX-5 isn’t as roomy or practical as some of its top SUV rivals. It’s worth a look, but know that other SUVs are better in most ways.”

2.Mazda CX-3

Recommended model year: 2020-2021

Median used price: $13,600

What they said: “The CX-3 is technically the smallest SUV in Mazda’s lineup, sharing space in the subcompact SUV segment with the slightly larger and slightly more expensive CX-30,” Car and Driver magazine said in its review. Its proximity to the CX-30 doesn’t make the CX-3 completely obsolete; its upscale cabin, fun-to-drive nature, and cheeky exterior styling make it a favorite among other small crossovers.

3.Mazda CX-30

Recommended model year: 2021-2025. Built after September 2020

Median used price: $15,900

What they said: “The 2021 CX-30 is a sleek, sporty entry into the ultracompact SUV class,” Edmunds said in his review. “It has a striking look and plenty of standard features. It’s priced higher than many of its competitors, but you get a lot for the money. It’s comfortable on the road and has plenty of storage space.”

4. Subaru Forester

Recommended model year: 2019-2025

Median used price: $15,900

What they said: MotorTrend said in its review, “In terms of practicality, the Subaru Forester is hard to beat in the compact crossover segment. Its cabin is very spacious, giving its occupants plenty of room to stretch out, not to mention plenty of cargo-carrying capacity. Meanwhile, the Forester is extremely comfortable to ride, with soft-touch surfaces throughout the interior adding a luxurious feel.”

5. Chevrolet Trailblazer

Recommended model year: 2021-2023

Median used price: $16,700

What they said: Kelley Blue Book said in its review, “The Chevrolet Trailblazer name is back in the form of a subcompact crossover SUV, the most affordable entry-level model in Chevrolet’s extensive SUV lineup. The Trailblazer is a strong value choice in this segment with a low starting price, excellent fuel economy, and some great standard features such as an intuitive and modern infotainment system.”

6. Hyundai Ioniq 5

Recommended model year: 2021-2023

Median used price: $16,700

What they said: In its review, Car and Driver said, “Since its debut as a 2022 model, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has frequently been named to our 10Best, Editor’s Choice, and EV of the Year award lists. It’s appealing in style, packed with value, priced right, and fun to drive. In short, it’s an electric SUV that’s easy to love.”

7. Nissan Rogue

Recommended model year: 2021-2023

Median used price: $17,200

What they said: “The latest 2023 Nissan Rogue is the best version yet,” Edmunds said in his review. “It’s practical, fuel-efficient, and packed with standard features and driver aids. It’s a solid all-rounder. But compared to other small SUVs, the Rogue has a noisy interior, an unrefined ride, and an increasingly outdated infotainment system.”

8. Subaru Solterra

Recommended model year: 2023-2025

Median used price: $17,700

What they said: In its review, Kelley Blue Book said, “The new Subaru Solterra is similar in size to the Toyota RAV4, making it a compact SUV. The reference to Toyota is no coincidence, as the Solterra is part of a joint project that also includes the new Toyota bZ4X all-electric SUV.”

9. Audi Q4 e-tron

Recommended model year: 2022-2025

Median used price: $18,100

What they said: In its review, U.S. News & World Report said, “The 2025 Audi Q4 e-tron is a luxurious, good-looking EV with good driving dynamics and decent power. But competitors match or exceed it in nearly every metric, making it difficult to choose among its many impressive rivals.”

10. Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron

Recommended model year: 2022-2024

Median used price: $18,100

What they said: “If all you want is an ultra-stylish EV, the 2024 Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron is an attractive option. Its rakeback roof makes it an attractive alternative to the standard Q4 E-Tron’s traditional profile,” MotorTrend said in its review.

11. Ford Bronco Sport

Recommended model year: 2021-2025

Median used price: $18,100

What they said: “If you’re looking for a small SUV with off-road capability, the most appealing choice is the 2025 Ford Bronco Sport,” Car and Driver said in a review.

12. Volkswagen Tiguan

Recommended model year: 2022-2024

Median used price: $18,200

What they said: “The 2024 Tiguan is sharp-looking and one of the few small SUVs with a third-row seat, and it has a comfortable ride and very good outward visibility. However, the third row’s usefulness is questionable and its handling can be distracting, so the Tiguan is not a first choice.”

13. Become EV6

Recommended model year: 2022-2024. Built after August 2022

Median used price: $18,700

What they said: In its review, Kelley Blue Book said, “The 2024 Kia EV6 is one of the most distinctive and visually exciting electric vehicles available, and one of our highest-rated models in its segment. The EV6 is called an SUV, but it somewhat defies classification as it blends aspects of hatchback, sports car, and perhaps otherworldly. And we haven’t even mentioned its innovative, tech-advanced interior.”

14. Hyundai Tucson

Recommended model year: 2022-2025. including hybrid

Median used price: $19,100

What they said: “The Hyundai Tucson improves its value proposition with added technology for 2025,” U.S. News & World Report said in its review. “It’s still a comfortable, spacious and well-equipped compact SUV, but many rivals offer drivers more excitement.”

15.Mazda CX-9

Recommended model year: From 2020 to 2023. Built after December 2019

Median used price: $16,200

What they said: MotorTrend said in its review, “While the CX-9 is attractive compared to other SUVs in this segment, its small third row and limited cargo capacity make it less practical. These are crucial for a three-row SUV, and we hope the CX-90 can do well in this segment without losing what makes it a Mazda in the first place.”

16. Nissan Murano

Recommended model year: 2021-2025

Median used price: $18,000

What they said: In its review, Car and Driver said, “The fourth-generation Murano is more of a significant refresh than an all-new car. Beneath its shapely new sheetmetal, distinctive lighting elements, swooping roofline, and bulging fenders, structural and chassis components are carried over from the outgoing model, and that’s okay. The Murano’s sleek, clean design hides those historical elements.”

17. Ford Explorer

Recommended model year: 2020-2024

Median used price: $18,400

What they said: “The seven-passenger (base trim) 2024 Ford Explorer has an impressive track record of engine power, towing capacity and sporty driving dynamics,” Kelley Blue Book said in its review. “It also boasts safety certifications in the form of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s coveted Top Safety Pick Award and offers Co-Pilot360, Ford’s advanced safety technology bundle. Plus, it looks downright intimidating sitting in a parking lot full of unstylish cars. rivals. ”

18. Mitsubishi Outlander

Recommended model year: 2022-2025. Built after June 2021

Median used price: $18,700

What they said: “For 2025, Mitsubishi’s largest SUV has received some pleasant updates inside and out,” Edmunds said in his review. “Improved technology and a fairly luxurious interior give the 2025 Outlander an advantage over previous models. Unfortunately, a nearly useless third row and an underpowered engine remain.”

19. Acura RDX

Recommended model year: 2019-2025

Median used price: $19,600

What they said: “Fun and practical, the Acura RDX has a lot of potential. Not only is it stylish, sporty and roomy, it has traditionally offered good long-term value. There’s just one big problem with this great SUV: infotainment technology. Acura has updated the 2025 RDX with a focus on exterior design and improved quality of life inside the cabin.”

Scott Pelley and why we can’t ignore the aftermath of ’60 Minutes’

0

play

CBS News has fired Scott Pelley, who worked as a correspondent on “60 Minutes” for more than 20 years.

Anchor’s departure came after a heated staff meeting in which Perry was heard accusing CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” the news organization, according to a recording obtained by The New York Times and reported on June 1.

Viewers can’t take their eyes off the interesting details as the same dramatic events are interwoven with their memories of watching the long-running network show. This aroused real emotions in fans, who expressed their disappointment on social media platforms.

“I’m in my 70s and I can’t remember a time when I didn’t watch 60 minutes. Important traditional programming was ruined,” one viewer commented on a YouTube clip breaking the news. “Some young people may not understand the importance of 60 minutes. It’s a big loss.”

USA TODAY has reached out to CBS for comment.

People grew up on “60 Minutes.” Now the show changes

For generations, “60 Minutes” is the show they watch all the time in their living rooms and stuff their DVRs with episodes their parents vowed to watch later.

“This is the news show I used to watch with my parents when I was a kid,” one person wrote on TikTok. “Real news with real legends in our living rooms every Sunday night.”

The June 1 exchange took place during a meeting intended to introduce newly hired “60 Minutes” executive Nick Bilton. Mr. Perry called Mr. Bilton’s qualifications “frivolous” and questioned Weiss’s commitment to making “60 Minutes” a success, the Times reported.

According to the Times and Status, Mr. Perry was reportedly angered by Mr. Bilton’s remark to staff that Mr. Weiss “loves this facility.” Perry interjected, “She doesn’t love this place. She was brought here to kill this place, and that’s exactly what she’s doing.”

He also asked Bilton about the recent mass layoffs at the department on May 28th. Those fired also reportedly include senior, longtime 60 Minutes executives such as executive producer Tanya Simon, executive editor Dragan Mihailovic, and correspondents Sharin Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. In public statements, Alfonsi and Vega claimed that the dismissal was politically motivated.

Layoffs are hitting the job market hard

Viewers may not only be mourning the loss of “60 Minutes” as we know it, but they may also be empathizing with the mass layoffs occurring across the country due to rising costs and the replacement of workers by artificial intelligence.

When it happens to someone you respect, it not only becomes a familiar problem, but it may also make people who are struggling financially feel less alone. This is sometimes called “parasocial healing” by psychologists, and people feel seen when celebrities share personal struggles that match their own.

More Americans say their living conditions are worse today than at any time in the past 25 years. According to an April 2026 Gallup poll, more than half (55%) said their financial situation has worsened.

The poll also marks the fifth year in a row that Americans say things are getting worse, not better. The only time public mood was so low was during the Great Recession.

Why don’t you turn away from the discussion?

Experts say it’s the irresistible allure of interesting stories that makes it impossible for us to turn away from the discourse. But in Perry’s case, he also means a lot to the people who grew up watching him on TV with their families. This drama evokes feelings of nostalgia and sadness and feels personal to many.

“I was 7 years old when the first episode of 60 Minutes aired, and my dad barely missed an episode,” another viewer of the show wrote on YouTube.

“My family had one, so I grew up watching a lot of television. For me, television has always represented integrity in journalism, but that’s no longer the case,” they continued. “Scott Pelley is one of a long line of outstanding journalists, and he leaves with the greatest integrity.”

And with public trust in the media already at record lows, seeing thoughtful reporting cut short can feel like a punch in the gut.

“A once great news show has collapsed for almost 60 years,” one viewer wrote on Reddit. “This is going to kill me,” another person added to the thread. “It was just a tradition for us to watch ’60 Minutes’ every Sunday with our parents when we were kids. And now… hmm.”

Greenland is part of Denmark “for now,” Rubio said.

0

play

WASHINGTON – Despite the Iran war and increased attention to Cuba, the Trump administration made clear Wednesday that it is not taking its eyes off Greenland.

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on June 3, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked, “Do you recognize that Greenland is indeed part of Denmark?”

“For now,” Rubio said.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised during his second term to acquire Greenland, sparking tensions with European allies and protests in the semi-autonomous Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and the island’s government have made it clear that Greenland is not for sale.

President Trump’s supporters argue that there is strategic value in making Greenland part of the United States, given its geographic location and riches in oil, uranium and other rare minerals. President Trump has argued that the United States needs control of the world’s largest island to counter threats from Russia and China.

Rubio told lawmakers on June 3 that his administration is in talks with Greenland and Denmark, adding that the talks are “at a good stage.”

“We are actually participating in discussions with Greenland and Denmark about using Greenland for the collective defense of all of us,” he said. “This is an important part of missile defense, and we are currently participating in those negotiations.”

Rubio did not elaborate on the talks, but said: “I think we’ll get some pretty good news at some point.”

Last month, the United States opened a new consulate and sent a special envoy to the Arctic. President Trump also posted an AI-generated image of himself overlooking a mountainous village, captioning the photo, “Hello, Greenland!”

Hundreds of protesters chanted “no means no” and “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” at the opening of the new consulate in downtown Nuuk, Reuters reported.

Google program releases millions of sterile mosquitoes into Florida

0

Google wants to release 32 million germ-treated mosquitoes into Florida.

The plan is part of the company’s Debug Initiative, a 10-year program aimed at reducing diseases spread by the world’s deadliest animals. Google has applied for an experimental use permit to inject mosquitoes with a specific strain of Wolbachia pipientis that prevents them from breeding.

Even when infected males mate with wild female mosquitoes, the eggs they lay do not hatch, leading to a decline in the overall population.

“We use an idea that has been around since the 1950s, called the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), which is also effective against other types of insects, including fruit flies, screwworms, and codling moths,” Debug’s website states. “The idea is simple: raise sterile males and release them into a population of wild insects. When wild females mate with sterile males, the eggs do not hatch. With each successive generation, the population dwindles.”

Google wants to release millions of mosquitoes into Florida

Google wants to release millions of germ-infected mosquitoes into Florida as a way to reduce disease-carrying populations.

Debugging has so far focused on the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits viruses such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Eric Caragata, an assistant professor at the University of Florida who specializes in mosquito-microbial interactions, said the new debug request targets a species of Culex mosquito that can transmit West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.

Still, this strategy “has never been effective against mosquitoes on a sufficient scale” and has failed to stop the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases.

“Mosquitoes are fragile and difficult to rear in the required numbers,” the site says. “At Debug, we are developing new technology to make that possible.”

In the first year of the experiment, 16 million sterilized male mosquitoes were released in Florida and California, and another 16 million will be released in the second year, according to the Federal Register. It did not say in which counties or cities the bug would be made public or when testing would occur.

Only female mosquitoes bite, so releasing the males will not increase the number of biting mosquitoes.

What types of mosquitoes does Debug target?

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District already began releasing Wolbachia-treated Aedes aegypti mosquitoes last year, and the effort has been so successful that it plans to release more mosquitoes this year.

A similar technique was previously used for New World screwworms.

Release of sterile worms into wild populations has previously been shown to be effective in controlling New World screwworms. New World screwworms are a type of fly larva that primarily attack livestock, wildlife, and pets by burrowing into open wounds, “like a screw being driven into a tree.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, infection is often fatal. It has also been successfully used to control the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Isolated outbreaks of the parasite have previously been confirmed in the United States, including an incident in the Florida Keys in 2017.

What diseases can mosquitoes carry?

According to the World Mosquito Program, common mosquito-borne diseases include dengue fever, malaria, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika.

Aedes aegypti can transmit diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya, and Debug’s latest target, the Culex mosquito, can transmit West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.

  • Standard features include a 10.25-inch center display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration.
  • Sedan models offer 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space and the rear seats can be folded down for more space.

Now in its 22nd year, the 2026 version is one of the cheapest cars in America, with a starting price of less than $25,000 for the base model. Available in five trims, Mazda said in a press release when the vehicle was first announced that the Mazda3 “represents an entry point into the Mazda lineup and is generously equipped with a robust suite of standard i-Activsense driver assistance and safety features.”

“Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Mazda3 offers a sleek design, premium features and engaging driving dynamics. Both sedan and hatchback models are scheduled to arrive in dealerships this summer,” Mazda said in a statement. “Buyers can choose between a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode or the available Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) available on select trims.”

Mazda sold 29,266 Mazda3s in 2025, down 24.7% from 38,877 units in 2024.

We spent a week testing the Mazda3’s top trim, Turbo Premium Plus. See for yourself what’s striking about the exterior and interior, and what’s inside and around the Mazda3.

10.25-inch screen and full connectivity

The Mazda3 features a 10.25-inch center display with the Mazda Connect infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration. The vehicle is also equipped with push-button start, remote keyless illuminated entry, a rearview camera, two front USB-C inputs, air conditioning, Bluetooth, and a standard eight-speaker Mazda Harmonic acoustic audio system.

Over 13 cubic feet of cargo space

The Mazda3 has a very spacious truck with 13.2 cubic feet of storage space. You can also fold the back seats of your car to create additional storage space.

nice moonroof

The Mazda3 we tested had a nice moonroof that let in lots of sunlight.

According to Mazda, the benefits of the moonroof include allowing fresh air to enter the vehicle without having to open the windows, and using the moonroof to improve ventilation to reduce temperatures on hot days. The company says the moonroof makes the vehicle feel larger and is more effective at deterring theft than a full convertible.

How Trump is reimagining Washington, D.C., from the Arch to the White House ballroom

Since President Donald Trump began his second term, renovating the White House and parts of Washington, D.C., has been one of his priorities as he prepares for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Construction projects such as the demolition of the East Wing of the White House and the repainting of the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial have been in the news.

Historic preservationists have denounced the project, citing the need for a formal review of historic buildings and Congressional approval for such changes. Meanwhile, the Trump administration defended them, saying the president wanted to renovate the city ahead of summer celebrations.

Here, we will introduce President Trump’s renovation projects and their status across Washington, DC.

“Arc de Triomphe”

President Donald Trump has proposed building a 250-foot-tall “Arc de Triomphe” near Arlington National Cemetery. Renderings of the proposed structure show it resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The memorial will be located on Columbus Island at Memorial Circle between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Axios reported in November that construction of the arch could cost about $100 million.

The funding is expected to come from a combination of public and private funds. The White House told USA TODAY that the Fine Arts Commission approved the project. The project is being considered by the National Capital Planning Commission. The group’s first meeting will be Thursday, June 4th.

In addition, the Interior Department is conducting legally required site investigations, including geotechnical work, the White House said, noting that the investigations are standard practice for testing sites and soil.

Geotechnical and site investigation work is required before a final proposal can be made.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

In April, President Trump announced plans to renovate the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool. USA TODAY previously reported that the president had complained about sewage and foundation leaks.

The Biden administration considered replacing the pool’s granite, but the plan was not moved forward because it was estimated to cost $301 million.

Instead of replacing the granite, the Trump administration hired a $1.5 million contractor to resurface the bottom, similar to an industrial pool.

The basin is painted to reflect the blue of the American flag.

On Tuesday, June 2, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said on the X show that the landmark would be completed by Independence Day.

white house banquet hall

President Trump first announced plans for the White House Ballroom in July 2025. In October, the east wing was demolished to make room for a 90,000-square-foot building.

Since the announcement, the cost of the project has increased from $200 million to $400 million.

Additionally, the Trump administration is facing a lawsuit over the construction.

In December, the National Trust for Historic Preservation sued the administration and several agencies involved in the project, according to previous reporting by USA TODAY. Those groups argued that Trump should have gotten approval from Congress before demolishing it.

Administrative lawyers, meanwhile, argue that the president’s approval was not needed because the project was funded by private donations, not taxpayers.

A federal judge ordered the project halted in March. This was followed on Thursday by an order by the Trump administration blocking surface construction work on the project.

The latest development in construction is a rooftop “drone port” that President Trump revealed in a Truth social post on Sunday, May 31st. The president said the “drone port” is necessary to protect Washington, D.C., from threats.

It remains to be seen whether this project will come to fruition.

The White House told USA TODAY that the project is pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. A hearing before a circuit court panel is scheduled for June 5. Construction sites are still in operation.

kennedy center

Last year, the president began renovations to the Kennedy Center. USA TODAY previously reported that the renovations included painting the pillars, refinishing the marble, replacing chairs and renovating the stage.

On Friday, May 29, a federal judge ruled that President Trump illegally added his name to the Kennedy Center. The judge also blocked the administration from closing the venue for renovations.

In a post on Truth Social about the decision, President Trump said that millions of dollars in materials, marble, furniture, steel, air conditioning, heating, and much more have been ordered or will soon be ordered, resulting in a “structure that is no longer in danger of collapsing, rusting, rotting, and potentially infested with rats and insects.”

UFC area

In late May, the White House installed the Ultimate Fighting Championship Arena on the South Lawn. USA TODAY reports that the president is in talks about keeping the stage, albeit temporarily.

“I’m considering it, but we’ll probably never take it down,” President Trump said on TikTok on June 2.

The arena was set up for the game scheduled for June 14, President Trump’s 80th birthday and National Flag Day.

The structure is 90 feet tall and supports lighting, audio and video boards. The arena features an octagonal cage where UFC fighters fight.

It is estimated that the structure can accommodate 5,000 people.

President Trump says he may keep UFC arena on White House lawn permanently

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said the Ultimate Fighting Championship Arena, which was recently installed on the South Lawn of the White House, may remain as a permanent facility after the fight on the night of June 14 is over.

In a video posted to TikTok on June 2, President Trump likened the towering UFC arena known as “The Crow” to France’s Eiffel Tower, which was supposed to be demolished after the 1889 World’s Fair.

“They never took it down. We’re building something in front of the White House that is very attractive to a lot of people,” Trump said in the video. “There’s a big UFC fight coming up on June 14th, and I’m looking at it, but we’ll probably never beat it.”

Mr. Trump, who quickly finished his remarks with a smile on his face, likely just threw out a suggestion that would raise questions among his critics. Again, Trump has never shied away from breaking White House norms. Hence why we held the UFC event in the first place.

The 90-foot-tall structure will tower above the White House and include lighting, audio and video boards atop the octagonal cage where UFC fighters compete. The device can be seen from most angles of the White House, making the grounds look like a theme park.

President Trump said the arena could hold about 5,000 spectators and promised that night’s fight would be “the largest event ever held at the White House.” The day marks President Trump’s 80th birthday and Flag Day, and is part of a year in which his administration celebrates the nation’s 250th anniversary. The UFC plans to cover the costs of hosting the tournament.

President Trump said an additional 75,000 to 100,000 spectators will be able to watch the UFC event for free on large screens off the White House Ellipse.

The temporary UFC arena was suddenly added to the crowded White House skyline as two construction cranes moved in for President Trump’s massive ballroom work on the east side of the iconic building.

As a result of the UFC’s review, President Trump will be forced to suspend travel to and from the South Lawn on Marine One and instead rely on a motorcade to travel to and from Joint Base Andrews, where the president flies Air Force One.

President Trump was joined at the White House on May 6 by UFC fighters Justin Gaethje and Ilya Topuria, who will compete in the headliner fight, as well as Alex Pereira and Cyril Gane, who will compete in one of the other seven bouts.

Who must follow the new SNAP work rules? What you need to know

0

play

Some of the approximately 42 million low-income Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are running out of time to prepare for new work requirements.

The nation’s largest nutrition assistance program became a flashpoint during a 43-day government shutdown in 2025, which was eventually ended with funding restored, but not before a series of lawsuits that have brought the program under new scrutiny. SNAP was already broken long before the stalemate. But when President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill was passed in July 2025, it outlined tougher regulations and billions of dollars in funding cuts.

New work requirements were added to prevent “fraud and waste,” according to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, but the U.S. Congressional Research Service said in an April 7, 2025, report that SNAP fraud is “rare,” and that available data and reports show that many overpayments can result from unintentional mistakes.

Critics have warned against the changes, saying they would weaken vital social safety nets. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that about 3.5 million people lost benefits between July 2025 and February 2026, and local politicians, including New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, are pushing to pass legislation to close the gap.

States were given a grace period to enact these rules before beneficiaries began to see potential reductions in benefits. June 1 is the deadline for work requirements in several populous states, including New York and California, meaning more Americans will be covered by the provision.

Here’s what you need to know about the new SNAP work requirements.

New SNAP work requirements

President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed in July, aims to cut SNAP funding by an estimated $186 billion by 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office. It also added new restrictions to the program, including expanded work requirements.

Under the bill, non-disabled adults (referred to in government documents as able-bodied adults without dependents or ABAWD) who wish to receive SNAP benefits for more than three months in a three-year period must meet work requirements if:

  • No documented medical or circumstantial exemption. (physical or mental health, pregnancy, age, assistance from other programs, membership in a designated Indian group).
  • Ages 18-65 (up from the previous maximum age of 55).
  • Do not have any dependents under the age of 14 (previously the dependent age was 18).
  • Veterans, people under the age of 24 who have recently aged out of foster care, or people who are homeless. Previously, these groups were exempt from labor requirements.

To meet the work requirement, non-exempt individuals must:

  • Work at least 20 hours per week/80 hours per month in paid employment or earn at least $217.50 per week before taxes.or
  • Perform at least 80 hours of unpaid work per month (services can be exchanged for non-monetary payments, such as performing building maintenance to reduce rent). Pre-approval and verifiable proof of business hours required. or
  • Participate in an approved education or training program for at least 80 hours per month. This includes college courses, certificate programs, SNAP employment and training programs, local job readiness courses, and similar initiatives. Participating in a drug or alcohol treatment program is also important.or
  • Perform a certain amount of community service or volunteer work based on state-specific guidelines. This may include volunteer and work experience programs with local nonprofits and public service organizations such as food pantries, parks, and libraries. Hours are calculated by dividing your SNAP benefits by your state’s minimum wage. New York State Example: If you receive $300 in SNAP and the state minimum wage in your area is $16, you must complete 18 hours of community service or volunteer work each month. ($300 ÷ $16.00 = 18 hours).

Who receives SNAP benefits?

SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is offering the card, known as Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT), to about 12% of Americans for a limited time to help purchase basic groceries. Many of the beneficiaries are the elderly, people with disabilities, and children.

To qualify, households must be below 130% of the poverty line. That means their income is no more than 30% below the federal poverty guidelines ($15,960 per single person in 2026). $27,320 for a three-person household. $38,680 for a five-person household.

In 2025, the monthly cap for a one-person household will be $298, but it could rise to as much as $785 for a three-person household and $1,183 for a five-person household, according to the USDA. There are special additional rules for households with elderly or disabled people.

SNAP benefits are determined by the state and funded by the USDA. To maintain eligibility, recipients must recertify periodically. Benefits are typically only provided for three months out of a 36-month period unless additional work-related requirements apply. Approved recipients will have a limited timeline to access benefits.
