Will the Patriots, Rams or Seahawks be No. 1?

0

play

  • The New England Patriots moved up the standings with a league-best record of 11 wins and 2 losses.
  • Significant rises in the rankings included the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Chicago Bears, bringing five teams into the top 10.

NFL power rankings entering Week 14 of the 2025 season (previous rankings in parentheses):

1. Los Angeles Rams (1): Yes, they lost…on the East Coast…in a rainstorm…QB Matthew Stafford unusually threw as many interceptions (two) in the first quarter entering Sunday as he had all season. Perhaps the only red flag here was the way the defense looked cut into the ground. If not, you’ll be giving LA a mulligan.

2. New England Patriots (3): It’s tempting to declare the team with the NFL’s best record (11-2) the best in the league. But as QB Drake Maye and company have shown, we need to open our eyes a little more and against better competition.

3. Seattle Seahawks (2): “I’m very happy to have the best defense in the world,” WR Jackson Smith-Nijiva (23 receiving yards) said on the quietest day of the 2025 season. But how far can it carry the Hawks if the offense continues to disappear?

4. Green Bay Packers (5): The Pack could rise to the top of the conference standings if they defeat the arch-rival Bears on Sunday and win their third straight NFC North division in three weeks.

5. Denver Broncos (4): In some ways, they’re like the Rockies’ version of the Seahawks, often featuring a dominant D and a quarterback who has the potential to be great, while also being a total wild card.

6. Houston Texans (11): The Seahawks are said to have the best defense in the world, but the numbers back up the Texans, who allow the fewest points and yards per game in the league. Now, will it be enough to end the losing streak against the Chiefs at five?

7. Buffalo Bills (12): The league’s No. 1 rushing attack just racked up a season-high 249 yards, which is also Pittsburgh’s most yards gained in a half-century.

8. Chicago Bears (15): They swept the NFC East. They swept Pennsylvania. If the team currently leading the NFC can win at Lambeau Field on Sunday, any notion of cheating should be completely dispelled.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars (13): They are 4-1 since returning from London and could take full control of first place in the AFC South if they defeat the Colts on Sunday.

10. San Francisco 49ers (14): They will only leave the Valley one more time during the regular season, and at 9-4 the Niners will very likely have home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs.

11. Philadelphia Eagles (6): WR AJ Brown is averaging 7.3 catches and 91.3 receiving yards (3 TDs) in Philadelphia’s four losses. In his other seven games, he averaged 47.7 yards and 3.9 receptions (including 3 TDs) in all wins. So tell me again how important it is to get the ball, AJ?

12. Detroit Lions (9): Even if they can avoid another regular-season losing streak for the first time since 2022, there is no scenario in which they can return to the field for the NFC playoffs, which is expected this week. This situation shows how much this team is struggling with changes in the coaching staff.

13. Indianapolis Colts (8): They have won one game since acquiring cornerback Sauce Gardner, who is out indefinitely with a calf injury.

14. Dallas Cowboys (19): He’s been overshadowed by the turmoil that has followed this team, but running back Javonte Williams has turned things around — he’s 45 yards away from hitting his first 1,000-yard year in the NFL.

15. Kansas City Chiefs (7): With Houston’s pass rush coming to Arrowhead, the state of their battered offensive line is a real concern.

16. Baltimore Ravens (10): They’ve averaged 20 points and nearly three turnovers per game over the past three weeks, but QB Lamar Jackson looked a little more energetic in the Thanksgiving loss to Cincinnati.

17. Carolina Panthers (20): Bringing running back Chuba Hubbard back into the offense seems like a smart move. It certainly paid off in Sunday’s upset of the Rams, with a season-high 19 touches and 124 yards.

18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (16): They appear to be healthier overall in the most important period of their schedule, four of their last five games against NFC South opponents.

19. Los Angeles Chargers (17): Would it be better to go into Monday night’s game against the salty Philly D with a quarterback fresh off surgery for a broken hand (on his non-throwing side)? Or Trey Lance?

20. Cincinnati Bengals (23): As important as having QB Joe Burrow back in the lineup is obviously important, this team’s story may be just as influenced by the defense, which was almost universally cited in the locker room win over Baltimore. Cincy has certainly gotten a lot better on that side of the ball in recent weeks.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers (18): You don’t actually want to fire Mike Tomlin, conspiracy theorists. You want to trade him for a first-round draft pick.

22. Arizona Cardinals (21): When was the last time a tight end, in this case Trey McBride, gained more yards from scrimmage and touchdowns than the team’s top two running backs combined?

23. Cleveland Browns (24): DE Myles Garrett vs. Cam Ward, the most sacked quarterback in the league? Considering the single-season sack record could be broken in just 13 games, Hall of Fame officials should make a short trip to Cleveland on Sunday.

24. Miami Dolphins (25): RB Devon Ashen became the fifth running back this century to score at least 10 touchdowns in each of his first three NFL seasons.

25. Commander Washington (27): Their brave play in Sunday night’s loss to Denver is pretty good evidence of coach Dan Quinn and a team that could have easily put it together by now.

26. New York Jets (30): With the Gardner deal quietly acquiring WR Adonai Mitchell and also acquiring two first-rounders, this trade could become one-sided at some point. Trust the process.

27. Atlanta Falcons (26): Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgaier are the only running back tandem in the league this season with both players scoring at least 7 TDs…and that’s because they’re doing something good.

28. Minnesota Vikings (22): I don’t know what was so bad about Sunday. Whether it was his body language on the sideline during the team’s shutout loss in Seattle or the fact that rookie QB Max Bromser was being compared to Nathan Peterman.

29. New Orleans Saints (29): Cam Jordan and Terrell Suggs are the only players this century to have at least 125 sacks and 745 tackles in their careers. Unfortunately, Jordan doesn’t get the recognition he deserves on the field.

30. New York Giants (28): To summarize for future head coaches: Rookie quarterbacks seem determined to play recklessly, and rookie pass rushers seem determined not to play at all.

31. Las Vegas Raiders (31): Seriously, how much can Max Crosby hold out here?

32. Tennessee Titans (32): A matchup between Ward and Shedur Sanders would have sounded more appealing eight months ago.

A Holland America Line passenger has been found after going missing during a Caribbean cruise.

Anne Evans, 55, was found when she failed to return to the cruise line’s Rotterdam ship during a port call in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, according to the Sint Maarten Police Department (KPSM). “In coordination with KPSM and other partners, we were able to contact the individual in question,” authorities said in a Nov. 28 Facebook post.

Evans, a U.S. citizen, was reported missing on Nov. 20. Law enforcement said no other details about the passenger or her situation would be released “in accordance with laws governing privacy and protection of personal data.”

Police previously said in a Nov. 27 post that they “have reason to believe that a woman matching Ms. Evans’ description checked into a hotel on the French side of the island using her passport.”

“She was also reportedly seen in the surrounding area of the facility,” the update continued.

Authorities said Evans left the cruise ship for an organized tour and got off the bus in Marigot, St. Maarten, but never returned. This port call was part of a 12-day Caribbean voyage that departed from Fort Lauderdale on 16 November.

“We appreciate the efforts of the local authorities in Sint Maarten and are pleased that the situation has been resolved,” Holland America told USA TODAY in an emailed statement.

How OpenAI and Thrive are testing new enterprise AI models

0

Thrive Holdings’ efforts to modernize its accounting and IT services are entering a new phase as OpenAI acquires an equity stake in the company and prepares to deploy its own expertise within Thrive’s operations. In doing so, OpenAI is testing an AI-driven model that combines capital, sector expertise, and an embedded technology team.

Earlier this year, Thrive established a holding company to acquire and manage companies in the everyday services industry. The aim was to rebuild these companies with more efficient processes, new data practices, and the practical application of AI. With OpenAI’s deeper involvement, the idea turned into a real-time experiment in how traditional providers can update their work without relying solely on off-the-shelf tools.

Test cases for bringing AI into core operations

While many corporate conversations around AI tend to revolve around pilots and proofs of concept, Thrive is taking a different approach by acquiring companies outright and redesigning how they operate. Our two current businesses, Crete Professionals Alliance (accounting) and Shield Technology Partners (IT services), employ more than 1,000 people. Thrive committed $500 million to Crete and partnered with ZBS Partners to contribute more than $100 million to Shield.

For companies looking in from the outside, the appeal is clear. These industries have heavy workloads, manual labor, and tight margins. We also handle sensitive data and work under strict deadlines. AI systems deployed in that environment require domain context, training, and tuning to fit local processes, rather than general automation.

Crete has already started leveraging AI to reduce routine tasks such as data entry and early stage tax workflows. Shield plans to complete 10 acquisitions by the end of the year, providing Thrive with the foundation for its IT operations and redesigning them with new tools and methodologies.

What OpenAI gives you

OpenAI is under pressure to find real enterprise-scale use cases for its models. Investors value the company at about $500 billion, and its long-term commitments include about $1.4 trillion in infrastructure investments through 2033. To justify this number, companies are betting on spending big on tools that help them work faster and handle complex tasks at scale.

By acquiring a stake in Thrive Holdings, OpenAI gains things it couldn’t create on its own, including access to companies that can experience models in their daily work and specialist training on real-world operations. As Thrive’s company grows, OpenAI’s stake could grow, according to people familiar with the deal.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with OpenAI and incorporate their frontier models, products and services into areas where we see tremendous potential to benefit from innovation and adoption,” said Joshua Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital and Thrive Holdings.

This partnership also gives OpenAI an avenue to glean value from the engineering support it provides. Anuj Mehndiratta, a partner who oversees product and technology strategy at Thrive Holdings, said his team will develop custom models for Thrive companies and send researchers and engineers to the field.

What companies can learn from this approach

For many companies, the most difficult part of using AI is not the model, but redesigning existing work. Thrive’s strategy reflects a move toward deeper integration, where AI teams reside within the business units they support, rather than acting as external advisors.

This model allows companies to:

  • Build tools that are shaped around real-world workflows rather than abstract use cases
  • Train models on controlled, high-quality data
  • Reduce the gap between engineering teams and frontline employees
  • Direct feedback from staff speeds test changes

It also reveals the true cost of AI implementation. Custom work requires engineering time, domain knowledge, and long-term coordination between owners and model developers. Thrive and OpenAI’s partnership formalizes that collaboration in a way that could become more commonplace as companies seek results rather than demonstrations.

“Our partnership with Thrive Holdings is designed to demonstrate what’s possible when we rapidly deploy frontier AI research and deployment across an organization, revolutionizing the way companies work and engage with their customers,” said Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI.

broader competitive environment

The deal comes at a time when AI companies are trying to establish themselves within the accounts of major companies. Anthropic is reaching more businesses through its partnership with Microsoft. Google is attracting interest in its latest model, increasing its market value as companies explore new AI options. Meanwhile, OpenAI has acquired stakes in partners such as AMD and CoreWeave to support its long-term infrastructure needs.

OpenAI also expanded its reach this Monday, announcing another deal with Accenture. The company’s ChatGPT Enterprise product will be deployed to “tens of thousands” of Accenture employees, giving OpenAI a new path to large-scale enterprise use.

Possible blueprint

If Thrive companies demonstrate meaningful improvements in the way they operate, this model could influence how other companies think about AI transformation. Rather than layering tools on top of old processes, some companies may move toward deeper restructuring, guided by technical teams that understand both the model and the business.

For now, Thrive Holdings serves as a real-world case study of what that approach looks like when applied to an industry that rarely makes technology headlines but is fundamental to day-to-day business operations.

Starting Dec. 2 at Starbucks: A new line of festive tumblers, water bottles, mugs and other cups created in collaboration with clothing brand Roller Rabbit. “‘Cozy’ is a word that applies to both Roller Rabbit and Starbucks,” Pittaris said. “We were inspired by the idea of enjoying coffee in your pajamas by a bonfire with family and friends this time of year. Both brands have great appeal to customers who are drawn to the comfort of seasonal rituals.”

What new drinks will be appearing on the Starbucks menu?

Launching Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Eggnog Latte features steamed eggnog, espresso topped with foam and nutmeg. Also available in an iced version and a new Eggnog Cream Cold Foam that can be added to any iced coffee drink.

Who are Tennessee special election candidates Behn and Van Epps?

0

Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District is becoming more competitive as the vote tightens between Republican Matt Van Epps and Democrat Aftin Behn.

play

American political attention is focused on Tennessee.

Volunteer state voters head to the polls on Tuesday, Dec. 2, for a special election to replace former Republican Rep. Mark Green in the 7th Congressional District, just west of Nashville.

The race, which includes parts of Davidson County and 13 other counties, has become more competitive between the two parties in recent weeks, with polls showing a close race between Republican veteran Matt Van Epps and Democratic state Rep. Aftin Behn.

Mr. Van Epps leads Mr. Behn by just 2 percentage points, 48% to 46%, according to an Emerson College Poll/The Hill poll released last week. The findings are within the margin of error.

Top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump, have campaigned for Van Epps with an eye toward maintaining Republican control in the field and the party’s narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives overall. Leading Democratic politicians, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, have also expressed support for Mr. Behn.

Tuesday’s election comes amid big gains for Democrats in year-end elections, including gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia and the mayoral race in New York.

Here’s what you need to know about the election.

Who is Democrat Aftin Behn?

Before becoming a state representative, Behn, a 36-year-old state representative, was an activist in the halls of the state Capitol.

She was elected to represent House District 51, which includes part of Davidson County, where Nashville is located, in a special election called in 2023 following the death of former state Rep. Bill Beck. She won re-election in the district in 2024. She is the youngest female member of the Tennessee General Assembly.

Before being elected to the state Legislature, Mr. Behn spent nearly a decade organizing throughout Middle Tennessee, advocating for Medicaid expansion, fighting rural hospital closures, and lowering the cost of living.

Affordability is one of the key policies she is pushing to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mr. Behn’s campaign slogan is “Feed our kids, fix our roads, fund our hospitals.”

“If you think things are going well, I’m not your candidate,” Behn said in an interview on News Channel 5 in October. “If you’re angry about the cost of living and the mess between the federal and state governments, I’m your candidate because I’m going to Washington to solve your problems.”

Who is Republican Matt Van Epps?

He won support from President Trump. He had the backing of a PAC backed by billionaires. And he received support from current and former Tennessee governors.

Van Epps, 42, has gone from virtual obscurity to Republican powerhouse, now backed by Republican strategists, donors and state officials in a high-profile race.

Van Epps grew up in an affluent suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to Tennessee after a 10-year military career in the U.S. Army. He is a decorated combat helicopter pilot who served nine tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and is a graduate of West Point College.

He currently serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Outside of the military, Van Epps worked in the Department of Veterans Services and the Department of Transportation, and led the Department of General Services.

He was nicknamed the “Tennessee Fauci” by his opponent in the Republican primary. Van Epps’ position was “strategic planner” for Tennessee’s COVID-19 Joint Command Group from March 2020, when the pandemic began, to May 2020. He was part of a close circle of state leaders who helped develop the state’s COVID-19 policy and no-bid contract spending without legislative approval during the pandemic.

Tennessee was one of the first states to reopen after pandemic shutdowns, and approximately 28,600 Tennesseans died from COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022.

Why is there a special election?

Greene, who was first elected in 2018, announced in June that she would resign from Congress on July 20 to take a new job in the private sector, leaving open the possibility of a special election in the historically Republican district.

In announcing her resignation, Greene said she would stay on to help pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which was signed into law on July 4.

More than a dozen candidates have jumped into the race to fill Greene’s seat. Mr. Van Epps and Mr. Behn each won their October primaries.

Who will win the 7th Congressional District in 2024?

Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District has been solidly red since 2022, when the Republican-controlled state Legislature redrawn its boundaries by dividing the Democratic stronghold of Nashville into three districts.

In November 2024, Greene won a fourth term with nearly 60% of the vote, resigning just a few months later.

It was the same district that Trump won over Harris by 22 points in the 2024 presidential election.

Don’t have a holiday gift? These people are said to have less stress.

0

play

Some families don’t buy presents during the holiday season and ask other family members not to buy presents.

And they aren’t alone.

In a survey conducted this fall by Empower, 33% of those surveyed said they weren’t asking for gifts this year.

Rebecca Rickert, director of consumer insights at Empower, said the “no-gifting” trend signals a return to consumerism.

“Not giving gifts is certainly an economic signal, but it’s also becoming an act of generosity in itself,” Rickert told USA TODAY. “That takes the pressure off the other person to give.”

In the same survey, 60% said gifting culture was “out of control,” and a further 48% said they felt “gift fatigue.” 44% said they would rather give the gift of time rather than material things.

Families can save money by not exchanging gifts

Josie Bradley’s family will stop exchanging gifts this year and focus on their talent.

The family in Snohomish, Wash., is a little “foolish” and turns holiday family time into a talent show, Bradley said.

For several years, Bradley said, her family has been trying to prepare for Christmas without presents.

In the past three or four years, we’ve all gone from buying each other gifts to picking one name out of a hat.

“But for years I’ve wanted to have this celebratory Christmas where we perform for each other,” Bradley said, explaining that when she was growing up in her hometown in Canada, her entire community would hold parties and talent shows instead of exchanging gifts.

Bradley, 53, has four adult children, two of whom are married with children, for a total of 13. Families share expenses and live together in “intentional communities.”

“We’re all looking at ways to save money as a unit, as a community, so everyone got on board with it this year,” she said of the idea of not buying each other gifts.

Some family members share budding talents. Ms. Bradley is trying to learn to play the didgeridoo, and her son is learning to play the whistle. In a TikTok post about her family’s decision not to buy presents, Bradley said her daughter-in-law told her she was going to campaign for the family. (Mr. Bradley said he may have been joking.)

Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be on your to-do list, reducing stress for your family.

Bradley said she and her family are looking forward to not having the stress of shopping during the holiday season.

“We’ve all been through something like that, and we’ve all been so stressed out about it, and we try to go back and remember the gifts we gave and the gifts we were given, and we can’t,” she said.

Bradley said she believes it was a little easier to get her family involved because it was her idea as the head of the family.

“There was some resistance because some people, like my daughter-in-law, are very good at buying presents. It’s like part of her expression of love.” But this year, Bradley said her daughter-in-law has been more open.

However, there are important exceptions.

Bradley said the family decided to buy each grandchild a large gift because they didn’t want them to feel socially excluded when they were with other children who received gifts.

But she’s excited to be able to enjoy the run-up to Christmas without buying gifts.

“For the first time, it’s not so much that I feel pressured to buy presents, but that I’m mentally blind to celebrating Christmas,” she said.

Refocus family time by eliminating gift exchanges

Lori Meo of Foster, Rhode Island, and her family also decided to give presents this year, and Meo couldn’t be happier.

“I’ve been saving money every year since my kids were little. To be honest, none of us need anything,” Meo said in a TikTok post, adding that her husband, two adult children and her mother won’t be buying presents this year.

“Honestly, I don’t need blankets, candles, lotions, etc. anymore,” she said in the post.

Meo, 57, told USA TODAY that she had been saying for the past few years that she wanted to eliminate gift-giving.

Her children, ages 23 and 25, are saving money to buy a house.

Meo also spoke with her stepmother and they agreed not to exchange gifts because her stepmother usually gives her money and it would be “too much work” for Meo to buy gift cards.

Eliminating gifts also takes away the pressure to pretend you like a gift when you don’t, Meo says.

“I don’t like it, I don’t need it, and I don’t have to return it,” Meo said. “So I think everyone is feeling good.”

Meo said she plans to give the cash to children and their loved ones, but has not yet decided whether to fill their stockings.

But otherwise, she plans to buy a new game for the family to play and make a big breakfast on Christmas morning.

“We’re going to focus less on gifts and refocus on being with family.”

Michael Dell pours $6 billion into ‘Trump account’ for newborns

0

play

WASHINGTON – Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, is donating more than $6 billion to President Donald Trump’s new newborn account – and the president hopes others in the business world will follow the billionaire tech executive’s lead.

Dell will join Trump in the Oval Office to announce the donation on Tuesday, Dec. 2, the White House exclusively confirmed to USA TODAY, saying the move is expected to add $250,000 to about 25 million Trump accounts. This funding is on top of $1,000 in federal dollars that will serve as seed money to start your account.

Under the program, American children born between 2025 and 2028 will be eligible to receive a one-time contribution of $1,000 per child from the federal government to participate in mutual funds or index funds that track stock market performance. Parents will be able to start contributing to the account in July 2026.

“The Trump Account for the One Big Beautiful Act is a revolutionary investment by the federal government in the next generation of American children,” White House Press Secretary Khush Desai said in a statement. “This is also President Trump’s call for America’s businesses and philanthropists to do their part. Michael and Susan Dell’s $6 billion investment in America’s children is the first of many announcements for America’s children.”

The “Trump Account” was created by the president’s mega-legislation known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed by Congressional Republicans in July. These are effectively individual retirement accounts (IRAs) for children, designed to encourage children and families to save and build wealth.

To qualify, all your baby needs is a social security number. There are no income restrictions. Parents and others can contribute up to $5,000 a year to the account until the child turns 18. Employers can contribute up to $2,500 against a $5,000 limit. State and local governments and private charities are eligible for a wide range of donations.

Qualified withdrawals, such as education expenses, certifications, a down payment on a first home, or money to start a small business, are taxed at long-term capital gains rates.

Mr. Dell attended a White House event in June and heard President Trump promote the “Trump Account” weeks before the passage of the giant bill. Dell Technologies, Salesforce, Uber, Goldman Sachs and others announced at the time that the White House had committed to investing in the accounts of their employees’ children.

The account was originally proposed by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas in the Investing in America Act.

“Inspired by President Trump signing the American Investment Act, Susan and I are excited to go beyond the commitment from the U.S. Treasury and contribute $6.25 billion to create 25 million additional accounts for America’s children,” Dell said in a statement.

“We see this as a very real and powerful step to help more American families, and a timely way to turn this country’s growth into opportunity for all children,” Dell said. “We know that a financial head start can give America’s young people confidence and the momentum to shape their futures. If every child can see a future worth saving for, we can build hope and prosperity for future generations.”

The Treasury Department and IRS are also expected to issue formal guidance on the implementation of Trump Accounts on Tuesday.

The White House is working to highlight parts of the One Big Beautiful Bill, which is set to go into effect next year.

In addition to President Trump’s account, the legislation extended President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, eliminated the tax on tips, allocated billions of dollars in funding for a border wall, and reduced Medicaid and food stamp benefits through new eligibility requirements.

Joe Buck calls Patriots-Giants game ‘MNF’ on the same day he hosts ‘GMA’

  • Broadcaster Joe Buck served as a guest host on “Good Morning America” before calling the “Monday Night Football” game the same day.
  • Buck enjoys the challenge of hosting “GMA” because he can use a variety of broadcast skill sets.
  • He credits his work ethic to his father, Jack Buck, a legendary broadcaster who never turned down a job.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — When Joe Buck entered the broadcast booth on the main concourse of Gillette Stadium on Dec. 1, a security guard gave him some feedback.

“Hey, Joe, you did a great job on ‘GMA’ today!”

For Buck, this was certainly a worthy marathon on Monday. He served as a guest host on “Good Morning America” in New York before taking a flight to call the “Monday Night Football” game between the New England Patriots and New York Giants on ESPN.

This will be Buck’s fifth time hosting “GMA” since he expressed interest in hosting it earlier this year. Disney bosses (the company owns ABC and ESPN) were happy to oblige. Buck’s dual duties for the day were both publicity and logistics, and his “MNF” assignment was a short flight from New York.

“That was awesome,” Buck told USA TODAY Sports from the booth. “I’m always up for a challenge. Actually, it was a logistical challenge. Now I’m here. Let’s start the match.”

For the 56-year-old Buck, this opportunity allows him to flex a different muscle of his broadcast skill set.

“People say, ‘So why would you want to do that?’ That’s good for me. It’s good for my brain,” Buck said. “That’s a good thing. I don’t know, it’s just like being challenged. It’s a long day, but what do you do with it? In the real world, people work a lot harder than they do when they get up and put makeup on their face and go on TV. I’m not disrespecting that, but it’s the kind of thing I watched my dad do when I was little.”

Buck said she watched her father, Jack Buck, a broadcaster, grow up during the Great Depression. “As a kid, we didn’t have anything and we had to make ends meet to make ends meet.” “So once I got the job, I did whatever was asked of me,” Buck added. “And he never said no.”

Joe Buck said yes to the assignment and flew to New York on Sunday after preparing for the Giants-Patriots game. It reminded Buck of calling Major League Baseball in the middle of an NFL season when calling for the postseason during his 25-year tenure at FOX.

For the first half of Monday and all day Sunday, he was able to focus on his responsibilities for “GMA.” “We just need to compartmentalize,” he said.

Buck woke up at 4:30 a.m. ET and arrived at the studio an hour later. He sat at the anchor desk, reading and tossing the teleprompter.

“I felt good from the beginning. But, as corny as it sounds, everyone is really good at what they do,” Buck said of doing “GMA.” “I have never been on a show where everything moves like clockwork.”

Buck said the show is well-structured to make it as easy to enjoy as possible, no matter who the guest host is.

“It’s fun,” he said. “Sometimes it leads to something, and you know it’s going to jump out, and you say someone’s name and they turn around. I don’t know, but I feel like TV isn’t always like that.”

A little different from his approach at a prime-time football game, he said he prepared for “GMA” segment by segment, working on what was in front of him following the advice of his producers, who gave him only what he needed to know. Sometimes he feels like he’s deferring solely to chief meteorologist Ginger Gee, but that’s because “I think they trust me to do that at this point,” he joked.

When the show ended at 9 a.m. ET, he hopped on a plane and arrived outside Boston. She hadn’t planned on taking a nap, but by 1 p.m., “it had just gotten past me.” He dozed off, got up, grabbed something to eat, took a shower, and headed to the stadium.

“Yeah, it’s like, ‘Oh, Nicolás Maduro, do I have to sit with him?’ Just kidding,” Buck joked.

While Buck typically focuses on news and stories about the NFL and his fantasy teams, he also enjoys being a citizen of the world.

“I try to know a little bit about the world around me,” he said, adding, “It’s good to be able to be versatile and have at least some interesting conversation with someone in the field.”

By nightfall, Buck was back on a more familiar playing field: a football stadium.

“I don’t know, but just try,” he said. “And it’s fun. It’s a lot of fun. There’s nothing like starting and ending the day the way I do (Monday).”

Agent-based AI autonomy grows in North American companies

0

North American companies are now actively deploying agent AI systems that aim to reason, adapt, and act with complete autonomy.

Digitate’s three-year global program data shows that while adoption is universal across the board, regional maturation paths diverge. While North American companies are scaling towards full autonomy, European companies are prioritizing governance frameworks and data management to build long-term resilience.

From practicality to profitability

The story of enterprise automation has changed. In 2023, the main goals for most IT leaders were to reduce costs and streamline daily operations. By 2025, the focus will be further expanded. AI is no longer seen as just an operational utility, but as a benefit-producing capability.

Data supports this shift in perspective. According to the report, organizations in North America saw a median return on investment (ROI) of $175 million from implementation. Interestingly, this financial validation is not unique to the fast-moving North American market. European companies report comparable median ROIs of around $170 million, despite a more cautious and governance-focused approach.

This consistency suggests that although deployment strategies differ, such as a focus on risk management in Europe and a focus on speed in North America, the financial outcomes are similar. All organizations surveyed confirmed that they have leveraged an average of five different tools to implement AI within the past two years.

Generative AI remains the most widely deployed at 74%, but we are seeing a notable increase in “agent” capabilities. More than 40% of enterprises have deployed agents or agent-based AI, moving beyond static automation to systems that can manage goal-oriented workflows.

IT operational autonomy becomes a testing ground for agent AI

While marketing and customer service often dominate public discussions about AI, the IT sector itself is emerging as a key laboratory for these deployments. IT environments are inherently data-rich and structured, creating ideal conditions for models to learn while remaining sufficiently dynamic to require the adaptive inference that agentic AI systems promise.

This explains why 78% of respondents have deployed AI within IT operations, the highest percentage of any business function. Cloud visibility and cost optimization leads the adoption curve at 52%, followed closely by event management at 48%. In these scenarios, rather than alerting humans to problems, technology proactively interprets telemetry data to provide a unified view of spending across the hybrid environment.

Teams leveraging these tools report improved decision-making accuracy (44%) and efficiency (43%), allowing them to handle higher workloads without increasing escalations.

Cost and the human conundrum

Despite the optimism around ROI, the report highlights “cost and human challenges” that threaten to slow progress. This contradiction is straightforward. Businesses are deploying AI to reduce their dependence on labor and operational costs, but these very factors are acting as a major inhibitor to growth.

47% of respondents cited the continued need for human intervention as a major drawback. These agent AI systems are far from achieving the full autonomy of “set-it-and-forget” solutions and require continuous monitoring, adjustment, and exception management. At the same time, implementation costs were the second-highest concern at 42%, driven by costs associated with model retraining, integration, and cloud infrastructure.

The human resources needed to manage these costs are lacking. For 33% of organizations, a lack of technical skills is the primary barrier to future adoption. The demand for professionals who can develop, monitor, and manage these complex systems exceeds the current supply, creating a self-reinforcing loop in which investment increases operational capacity while simultaneously increasing human and financial dependence.

Gap between trust and awareness

Differences in perspective exist between executives and practitioners. Although 94% of all respondents expressed trust in AI, this trust is not evenly distributed. C-suite leaders are significantly more optimistic, with 61% categorizing AI as “very trustworthy” and viewing AI primarily as a financial tool.

Only 46% of non-executive practitioners share this high level of trust. Those close to the day-to-day operations of these models are more aware of the reliability issues, lack of transparency, and need for human oversight. This gap suggests that leadership is focused on long-term review and autonomy, while teams on the ground are grappling with practical delivery and governance challenges.

There are also different views on how these agents work. 61% of IT leaders view agent systems not as replacements but as collaborators that augment human capabilities. However, expectations for automation vary by industry. In retail and transportation, 67% believe agent AI will change the key tasks of their roles, while in manufacturing, the same percentage see these agents primarily as personal assistants.

Full agent AI autonomy is rapidly approaching

We expect the industry to rapidly move towards reducing human involvement in routine processes. Currently, 45% of organizations operate as semi-autonomous or fully autonomous enterprises. Projections suggest this number will rise to 74% by 2030.

This evolution means a change in the role of IT. As capabilities mature, IT is expected to move from being an operational enabler to an orchestrator role. In this model, IT functions manage “systems of systems” and enable various intelligent agents to interact correctly while humans focus on creativity, interpretation, and governance rather than execution.

Avi Bhagtani, CMO of Digitate, said, “Agentic AI bridges the gap between human ingenuity and autonomous intelligence, and heralds the dawn of IT as a strategic, profitable function.” “Companies have moved from experimenting with automation to extending AI for measurable impact.”

Moving to agent AI requires more than just software procurement. We need an organizational philosophy that balances automation and human augmentation. Policies alone are not enough. To ensure transparency and ethical oversight in all decision-making loops, governance must be integrated directly into system design. European organizations are currently leading the way in this area, prioritizing ethical deployment and strong monitoring frameworks as the basis for resilience.

Furthermore, the shortage of technical human resources cannot be solved by recruitment alone. Organizations should invest in upskilling their existing teams by combining operational expertise with data science and compliance literacy.

Finally, reliable autonomy depends on high quality data. Investments in data integration and observability platforms are necessary to provide agents with the context they need to act independently.

The era of experimental AI is over. The current stage is defined by the pursuit of autonomy, whose value comes not from novelty but from the ability to scale agent AI sustainably across the enterprise.

“As organizations balance autonomy and accountability, those that embed trust, transparency, and human engagement into their AI strategies will shape the future of digital business,” concludes Bagtani.

Federal Reserve Board Offers Bounty to Virginia Football Coach Travis Turner

Nearly two weeks after a Virginia high school football coach was wanted on child pornography possession and child solicitation charges, federal authorities on December 1st warned that the coach “may be armed” and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Travis Turner, 46, of Appalachia, Virginia, is wanted on five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor, according to Virginia State Police. Authorities did not provide details on what led to the charges, but previously said additional charges were pending.

Turner, who was the head football coach at Union High School in Wise County, was last seen on Nov. 20. Authorities said in a Nov. 25 news release that they were “actively searching” for Turner.

In a wanted poster released on Dec. 1, the U.S. Marshals Service warned the public to “be cautious” and say Turner “may be armed.” The agency said it was offering a reward of up to $5,000 and urged anyone with information about Turner to contact authorities.

Adrian Collins, an attorney representing Turner’s family, told local television stations WCYB and WJHL over the weekend that the family’s last contact with Turner was on Nov. 20, after Turner “left his residence to walk into the woods with a gun.”

“We believe he entered a forested mountainous area,” Collins said in a statement, the television station reported. “No arrest warrant had been issued yet at that time.”

“We do not have any updated information to share at this time,” Virginia State Police spokeswoman Robin Lawson told USA TODAY on Dec. 1. Collins did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment on Nov. 30.

High school football coach disappears amid criminal investigation

Virginia State Police announced in a Nov. 25 news release that they obtained 10 felony warrants for Turner on Nov. 24.

State police said investigators were dispatched to Turner’s residence in Appalachia on Nov. 20 as part of the “initial stages” of the investigation, but during the trip agents were informed that Turner was no longer at the residence.

“This is part of an investigation and is not intended to make an arrest,” state police said in a news release.

Since Turner’s disappearance, state police have said they have used search and rescue teams, drones and police dogs to assist in the investigation. Federal authorities also joined the search for Turner, according to state police.

The agency said its “top priority” was to safely locate Turner, who is believed to be a fugitive. State police say the investigation is ongoing.

Appalachia is a town in Wise County, Virginia, approximately 40 miles north of the Virginia-Kentucky border.

Who is Travis Turner?

Turner taught physical education at Union High School, the same school where he coached football. As of Nov. 30, he was not listed on the school’s website.

During Turner’s disappearance, the Union High School football team remained undefeated and advanced to the state semifinals on Nov. 29, according to WCYB. The team is scheduled to play Glenvar High School in Salem, Virginia, on Dec. 6 in the Class 2 state semifinals.

Wise County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Goforth previously told USA TODAY that the district is aware that law enforcement has filed charges against “a faculty member on administrative leave.” Goforth did not name the employee, but said the employee was on leave and “is not permitted to be on school grounds or have any contact with students.”

Prior to teaching at Union High School, Turner played quarterback at Appalachian High School, where he was coached by his father, Tom Turner, a Hall of Fame member of the Virginia High School League.

Turner was a member of Virginia Tech’s 1998 freshman class, which also included Michael Vick, USA TODAY reported. Turner transferred to Division II UVA Wise for the 1999 season, when Vick memorably led the Hokies to the national championship game.

Turner then transferred to Eastern Kentucky University in 2002, where the team finished legendary coach Roy Kidd’s final season with an 8-4 record. The campaign also included a 25-24 loss to Eastern Illinois on October 12, when Turner faced future Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Four state parks in Hawaii will charge visitors an admission fee. Here’s why:

HONOLULU — Tourists who want to enjoy the natural beauty of some Hawaii state parks will soon have to pay a fee.

In a recent announcement, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said it will implement a “parking management and pricing system” at four popular state parks on the Big Island: Wailuku River State Park and Kekahakai State Park. Wailua River State Park on Kauai. Oahu’s Pu’u Ualaka’a State Wayside — Starting in January.

Non-residents and commercial vehicles will be subject to the fee, which is aimed at “enhancing the experience, improving traffic flow and ensuring park resources are sustainably managed,” according to the department.

“We are always looking for ways to make our parks more enjoyable for residents and visitors alike,” Alan Carpenter, acting superintendent of the DLNR State Parks Department, said in a news release. “These partnerships allow us to provide more consistent visitor management while reinvesting the revenue we collect directly into our parks.”

This funding will go toward park improvements, including park maintenance, facility upgrades, and long-term resource protection. Wailuku River State Park and Kekahakai State Park are each estimated to generate up to $1.5 million in revenue from admission and parking fees, the state parks service told USA TODAY in a statement.

hawaii travel industry

It will follow a similar fee structure already in place at 10 of the most visited state parks, starting with Oahu’s iconic Diamond Head State Monument in 2020, according to the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO). To manage visitor traffic, which reached more than 6,000 in 2019, in 2022 non-residents were required to reserve entry times and pay increased parking fees.

The move is consistent with Hawaii’s overall direction toward a sustainable tourism industry after decades of overtourism that strained natural resources and residents’ quality of life.

Earlier this year, Hawaii became the first U.S. state to enact a climate impact fee. The scheme, known as the ‘green fee’, increased temporary accommodation taxes to help finance projects related to environmental management, climate resilience and sustainable tourism. According to UHERO, these fees are unlikely to deter most tourists from continuing to visit these parks.

What are the new fees?

Visitors without Hawaii ID will pay $5 per person ages 3 and older and $10 per vehicle to enter at the following locations:

  • Wailuku River State Park in Hilo features an 80-foot-tall Rainbow Falls and an area of pools fed by underground streams called Boiling Pots.
  • Kekaha Kai State Park in Kona, Hawaii, features beaches and historic coastal trails.
  • Wailua River State Park is home to Kauai’s longest river, and visitors can take kayaking and boat tours.

A DLNR spokesperson told USA TODAY that parking at Pu’u Ualaka State Wayside will only be $7 per vehicle due to the “short stop” at the Honolulu observation deck.

These pricing systems provide free admission to residents with a valid Hawaii State ID.

When will the new rates start?

The new fees are expected to take effect in early 2026.

What state parks in Hawaii already charge tourists to visit?

The four parks will be added to the list of 10 state parks that already charge fees to visitors.

  • Diamond Head National Monument on Oahu
  • Cliff Covers of the Loire
  • Waianapoka St. State Beach, Maui, Hawaii
  • Iao Valley State Monument on Maui
  • ROWER KEALA BEALU Col
  • Waimea Canyon State Park on Kauai
  • ELE Star Hawaiians
  • Experience Kauai’s Coqui State Park
  • Hapuna Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii
  • Akaka Falls State Park on the Big Island of Hawaii

Newell Brands announces 900 layoffs and closure of 20 Yankee Candle stores

0

play

The parent company of Rubbermaid, Sharpie and Yankee Candle announced on Monday, Dec. 1, that it would lay off 900 people from its global workforce, becoming the latest company to announce job cuts.

Newell Brands said in a news release that the approximately 10% reduction in professional and administrative staff will have “limited impact on manufacturing and supply chain operations.” The U.S. job cuts are expected to take place in December, with international job cuts next year.

The company also plans to close about 20 Yankee Candle stores in the U.S. and Canada as part of what it calls a “global productivity plan.” The closure is scheduled to take effect in January, according to the release.

The company did not specify in the release which Yankee Candle stores it would close. Newell Brands did not provide a list of closed stores when USA TODAY reached out for comment, but said in a statement that the closures “represent approximately 1 percent of the brand’s sales and reflect our continued efforts to align with the way consumers shop today.”

“This productivity plan is designed to increase efficiency, sharpen our strategic focus, and take disciplined next steps to deliver stronger, more consistent performance,” Newell Brands President and CEO Chris Peterson said in a release.

The company said the restructuring is expected to incur costs of approximately $75 million to $90 million, primarily including severance and related costs. The plan is expected to save approximately $110 million to $130 million annually.

Layoff announcements continue

Newell Brands’ announcement continues a trend of companies announcing job cuts, including Amazon, General Motors, Target and Verizon.

Employers cut more than 150,000 jobs in October, the largest wave of layoffs in more than 20 years, according to a Nov. 6 report in Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The outplacement agency says 2025 is the worst year for announced layoffs since 2009, Challenger said, adding: “Those currently laid off are finding it harder to secure new jobs quickly.”

U.S. employers added 119,000 jobs in September, but the unemployment rate rose to 4.4% from 4.3% in August, its highest level in nearly four years, according to the jobs report released Nov. 20.

Companies have cited a variety of reasons for layoffs, from artificial intelligence to tariffs to corporate restructuring.

Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in a statement: “Some industries are correcting course after the pandemic-induced hiring boom, as the adoption of AI, softening consumer and business spending, and rising costs are driving tightening and hiring freezes.”

Patriots beat Giants on Monday Night Football: Winners and losers

0

play

  • The New England Patriots defeated the New York Giants 33-15, extending their winning streak to 10 games.
  • Patriots quarterback Drake Maye passed for 274 yards and two touchdowns.

FOXBORO, Mass. — Time is a flat circle.

The New England Patriots have one of the best quarterbacks in the league and are at the top of the AFC. The era of dynasties is in the rearview mirror, but a new era of Patriot supremacy could be dawning.

Perhaps that’s an overreaction to the Pats’ 33-15 crushing of the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. In the Finals, the Patriots’ winning streak increased to 10, while the Giants’ losing streak also extended to 7. Of course, there are winners and losers beyond the box score. Let’s take a closer look at everything.

winner

drake may

The second-year quarterback has such an effortless performance that it makes everything look easier than it actually is. The middle ball has feathers. There is a suitable amount for items that require zips. It looks simple but impressive.

In the first half, Maye was 16-of-20 for 208 passing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 10.4 yards per attempt. He completed 24 of 31 for 274 yards (despite his dynamite season, he has yet to pass for more than 300 yards).

After 13 weeks, Maye leads the league in completion percentage and ranks third in passing yards per game.

Mike Vrabel (and mustache)

The mustachioed head coach of the Patriots led his team to 10 straight wins in his first season in New England. They are the No. 1 seed in the AFC and will face two teams in the 2024 playoffs (Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens) with a bye before games against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.

marcus jones

If Jones hasn’t earned the status of the league’s most feared return man at this point, maybe it’s time for him to start being talked about as such. Jones returned a punt 93 yards up the left sideline with 5:17 left in the first quarter, eluding Giants punter Jamie Gillan’s futile attempt to push him wide, scoring his first touchdown of the night and his second punt return TD of the year.

According to ESPN, this was Jones’ 75th career punt return, making him eligible for entry into the NFL’s official record book. Coming into the game, his average career punt return was 13.6, which was already the best in NFL history even before the long comebacks began.

Christian Ellis

The Patriots linebacker had two big hits worthy of the retired “Jack Up!” ESPN segment. The first game was against Dart. Dart was running up the right sideline, but didn’t go out of bounds. So Ellis loaded the young man, and the blow was so powerful that the dart was almost level.

During the second quarter kickoff, Ellis took a (legal?) bullet at Gunner Olszewski, whose helmet had paint flying off.

jackson dart

The rookie signal-caller doesn’t get much to work with, but his two-point conversion toss to Darius Slayton is an example of how talented he is. He threw for 139 yards and did not turn the ball over in his first game back after missing two games with a concussion.

Joe Buck

The MNF play-by-play announcer did double duty, serving as a guest host on Good Morning America and traveling from New York to the Boston suburbs for the Pats vs. Giants game. That’s what we call versatility.

loser

giants special teams

As if giving up a long punt return for a touchdown wasn’t bad enough, that was just the beginning of New York’s special teams gaffes. Kicker Younghoe Koo made perhaps the biggest mistake of the entire NFL season when he attempted a 47-yard field goal in the second quarter. Koo tripped and got his right foot caught in the Gillette Stadium turf, turning the attempt from routine to lowlight reel-worthy. To be fair to Koo, neither the snap nor the hold were crisp.

Olszewski faltered on a kickoff return in the second quarter, fumbled the ball back to the Patriots. He left the game with a concussion.

mike kafka

The interim head coach benched Abdul Carter and had to deal with abysmal special teams play. But Devin Singletary’s 22-yard touchdown call from the Wildcats was creative and admirable, comparable to Jameis Winston’s blitzing touchdown against the Detroit Lions last Sunday. But punting midway through the fourth quarter when they were leading by two points was inconsistent with going for two points after Singletary’s score. It was also unwise to leave Darts in the game when he had already lost. He has yet to make it through the audition for Brian Daboll’s previous job.

Abdul Carter

Carter was making his second start in three games and missed the first quarter for disciplinary reasons. It’s a bad look for Carter, who missed the team walkthrough, leading to him missing the first series against the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 16. The rookie clearly needs someone to set things right in the locker room. These are not the types of stories the team that drafted him No. 3 overall seven months ago wants to deal with.

self preservation

Dart running up the sideline and being kicked by Ellis with such force that he was horizontal was probably all too typical of a rookie who hasn’t yet learned his lesson. This is a player who has entered the concussion protocol four times and missed the past two games with a head injury. Someone has to get that message across to the 22-year-old.

Joe Sean

Whoever the coach was, his roster turned out to be completely uncompetitive. Is the Giants owner really happy with him leading the search for New York’s next sideline leader?

denver broncos

It was an entertaining 24 hours for Sean Payton’s team as the No. 1 seed in the AFC, but the Pats’ 11-2 record vaulted New England back into first place in the conference.

The Patriots enter the bye week with a 2.5-game lead over the Bills in divisional contention, making Buffalo’s quest for home-field advantage in the playoffs even more difficult.

White House releases details of President Trump’s MRI scan

0

“Men of this age group would benefit from a thorough evaluation of their cardiovascular and abdominal health,” the statement said.

play

The White House released a statement from President Donald Trump’s doctor, saying the MRI scan he underwent during his most recent medical checkup was “precautionary” and the results were “completely normal.”

“This level of detailed examination is standard for a medical examination for an executive of President Trump’s age,” Sean Barbavera, Trump’s personal physician, said in a Dec. 1 statement.

Barbavera said the test was part of a comprehensive review of President Trump’s heart and abdominal health and said it was positive, adding that the MRI scan “confirms that President Trump remains in good overall health.”

The doctor’s report was released after Trump’s October medical exam, a follow-up to an April exam at Walter Reed Medical Center, continued questions about the treatment he was receiving and why. Dr. Barbavera said in his post-examination report that the test included “advanced imaging” but did not disclose the results of the imaging test. Trump said he then underwent an MRI scan.

After weeks of questions about the results of his MRI test, President Trump said he would release the results over the weekend. The announcement comes as the White House continues to push back against a New York Times report detailing how Trump has reduced his public schedule from his first term and raising questions about his stamina.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt ended her Dec. 1 press conference by criticizing the New York Times article, saying, “The President’s personal physician has provided you with all three detailed reports on the President’s health.”

In July, the White House revealed that Trump was experiencing swelling in his lower legs and bruising on his right hand after he was photographed with a swollen ankle and an affected area on his hand covered in makeup.

Barbabella said in a letter released by the White House at the time that tests confirmed the swelling in his legs was due to “chronic venous insufficiency,” a benign condition that is particularly common in people over 70.

Trump, 79, became the oldest person to become president when he took back the White House in January. He is the second oldest person to serve as president.

“Men of this age group would benefit from a thorough evaluation of their cardiovascular and abdominal health,” Barbabella said in a Dec. 1 statement.

Barbabella’s report details Trump’s heart health.

“There is no evidence of impaired blood flow due to arterial narrowing or abnormalities of the heart or major blood vessels,” the report said. “The heart chambers are normal in size, and the vessel walls appear smooth and healthy, with no signs of swelling or clotting.”

The report also said there are “no acute or chronic concerns” with President Trump’s other key agencies.

What is Real ID? TSA threatens fees if you don’t have it

0

play

If you’re planning on flying this holiday season, you’ll need more than just a ticket to board your flight. Travelers now require REAL ID-compliant identification to board federally regulated commercial aircraft. Otherwise, you will have to pay a fee if you do not have proper identification. So what exactly is a REAL ID-compliant ID?

A REAL ID-compliant ID is a state-issued identification, such as a REAL ID driver’s license or an ID card with a special symbol, that complies with the recently implemented “minimum security standards” for air travel.

With vacation travel on the rise, here’s what you need to know about REAL ID-compliant ID and how to get one.

Why do you need a REAL ID-compliant ID now?

The Transportation Security Administration will begin requiring REAL ID-compliant ID for adult travelers on U.S. domestic flights in May 2025, after two decades of pushing for stricter ID security regulations in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The 2005 REAL ID Act established the Commission’s recommendations on September 11, 2001, authorizing stricter federal requirements for the issuance of identification cards.

The new regulations outline that all air travelers over the age of 18 must have a REAL ID-compliant ID, which is a state-issued driver’s license, state-issued identification card, or another acceptable form of ID such as a U.S. passport, TSA said in a previous statement.

Can I fly without a REAL ID?

If you have another form of identification approved by TSA, you can travel without a REAL ID. As of December 1, TSA accepts the following forms of identification, but the list is subject to change in the future.

  • REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state photo ID issued by the DMV or state equivalent
  • State-issued enhanced driver’s license or enhanced ID
  • US passport or passport card
  • Homeland Security-trusted traveler cards (such as Global Entry)
  • permanent resident card
  • border crossing card
  • Photo ID issued by a federally recognized tribal nation/Indian tribe
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID (including those issued to dependents)
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
  • US Merchant Mariner Certification
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Transportation Worker Identification Certificate (TWIC)
  • HSPD-12 PIV Card
  • Passport card issued by a foreign government
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

So, if you haven’t obtained a REAL ID-compliant ID or document from the list above since its introduction earlier this year, you can expect to pay $45 to board a flight after February 1st.

How do I get a REAL ID?

According to usa.gov, travelers can receive a REAL ID when applying for or renewing a driver’s license or state identification card. During the application process, you can choose whether to make your new ID REAL ID compliant (indicated by a star icon).

To obtain a REAL ID, most driver licensing agencies will ask you to bring several items and documents, including proof of:

  • identity – If you are not a U.S. citizen, this includes a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card (green card).
  • social security number – Travelers can prove this by bringing their Social Security card, Form W-2, or pay stub or pay check from their employer.
  • place of residence – According to usa.gov, your state agency may request a deed, mortgage statement, rental agreement, utility bill, or bank statement to prove your residency.

How can I find out if I already have a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is designated by a symbol (most commonly a colored circle with a white star) in the upper right corner of your driver’s license or state ID.

Some states, like California, have stars placed inside the bear’s outline along with the stars.

The TSA website does not specify what documents are considered non-compliant, but reiterates that the documents listed above and those marked with special symbols are “acceptable” and comply with the new rules. Travelers whose documentation is deemed non-compliant will be assessed a $45 fee.

Why are vintage Pontiacs so hard to find?

0

play

Where did all the vintage Pontiacs go?

I wondered about this after last week’s column featuring Jim Biddle’s beautiful 1951 Pontiac Chieftain.

I’m sure that the blue 1968 Catalina station wagon I drove when I first got my driver’s license will slowly turn into a rusting mass and return to earth, where it will remain parked forever, perhaps behind my dad’s cousin’s house, or somewhere in a field or barn.

The steel framework may still exist, but I won’t go looking for it.

If you walk around the rows of classic cars at cruise-ins or shows, you won’t see too many 1950s Pontiacs. Lots of Chevrolets, Fords, and even old Dodges. But what about Pontiac? Aside from the fast muscle cars of the late 1960s and 1970s, such as the GTO and Trans Am, this General Motors vehicle seems to be underrated.

Why?

In the early 1900s, Edward Murphy, founder of the Oakland Automobile Company, embarked on a plan to build a car to compete with the Ford Model T.

He named the car after a 1700s Native American leader called Chief Pontiac. In 1926, General Motors purchased the company and formed the Pontiac Motor Company.

Pontiac made a splash in the late 1950s when it stepped into Chevrolet and Ford territory with the Bonneville full-size luxury car. After nearly a century, Pontiac production ended in 2009.

Looking back 10 years ago, I realized that I’ve written about more vintage Pontiacs than I thought, including models from the 1940s and 1950s.

That’s good for me. We’ve put together an online photo gallery featuring My Favorite Ride Pontiacs of all ages from the past few years.

While serving as a judge at the Currie Auto Center Car Show in 2015, my Best of Show selection surprised the other judges when I was faced with a sea of cars.

Rob Riley’s 1955 Pontiac Chieftain, with all the peeling paint and everything else, was in the top 20, but it was my number one choice. “Did you see that original crackling acrylic hood ornament,” I wrote in an email to my friend and automotive expert Tim Lloyd at the time? “How on earth would anyone take me seriously?”

In 2016, Steve Stancombe spoke to me about buying his dream car. Ten years ago, he bought a one-way ticket to Florida and drove home in an all-original burgundy and white 1952 Pontiac Chieftain.

I drove out to look at cars and fell in love. “The car was parked there on its side, the chrome reflecting the sun,” I wrote, describing my favorite thing about the car: the chrome fuel inlet cover. I described it as “understated and wonderful” chrome art.

Now, this is kind of an explanation of the Pontiac ratings of a certain era.

“Stancom appreciates unconventional old cars. ‘This is an odd duck, and certainly parts are hard to come by,’ he said. ‘Everyone likes old Chevrolets, old standards, classic cars. But I wanted something different.’

That same year, I wrote about the 1954 Pontiac Star Chief. Mark Wickliffe had seen the old brown car for sale in Spencer’s parking lot.

This well-worn classic reminded him of the 1950 Pontiac his parents owned when he was a child. He had the spacious back seat all to himself.

He paid $3,000 for the rust bucket, invested $400 in wide whitewall tires, and polished the chrome. However, restoring the car was more than he could invest. “I think I’ve gone a little crazy,” he told me 10 years ago. “It costs a lot of money to restore a car.

Wondering what happened to that classic Pontiac?

In 2017, I drooled over the 1949 Pontiac Streamliner that Larry Sanburn purchased years ago from an Atlanta man who couldn’t bring himself to restore his car.

“The underside was coated with good old red Georgia clay,” Sunburn said at the time. “I wasn’t running much.”

However, the bonnet ornament, depicting the head of an Indian chief, was lit at night.

Does anyone have a 1940’s or 1950’s Pontiac? Send me a photo.

Diddy, 50 Cent say Netflix documentary is a ‘hit’ for him

0

play

Sean “Diddy” Combs calls Netflix’s upcoming documentary series about him “an embarrassing hit.”

On Monday, Dec. 1, Combs’ spokesperson released a statement on his behalf criticizing Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos for greenlighting a four-part documentary project titled “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.”

According to a Netflix news release from Tuesday, Nov. 25, the docuseries will be executive produced by rapper and longtime enemy of Combs, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and will feature exclusive interviews with people who were previously part of Combs’ inner circle and “never-before-seen material.”

The disgraced hip-hop mogul, who is currently serving a four-year prison sentence after being convicted on federal prostitution charges, was featured in an interview with Jackson and director and co-producer Alexandria Stapleton, with the first trailer for the documentary series released on Monday morning’s “Good Morning America” segment.

“Today’s ‘GMA’ teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that it was not authorized to release,” Monday’s statement read. “As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been collecting footage to tell his story in unique ways since he was 19 years old. Netflix’s exploitation of that work is fundamentally unfair and illegal.”

The trailer, which premiered this morning, shows Combs discussing legal strategy with his lawyers, saying, “I’m going to hang up the phone right now and let the experts look at the situation and come back with a solution,” before sternly telling them, “We’re not working together in the right way. We’re losing.”

Combs also said in a statement that Netflix was “desperate to sensationalize every moment of Mr. Combs’ life, ignoring the truth, in order to capitalize on the never-ending media frenzy.”

“If Netflix cared about the truth and Mr. Combs’ legal rights, it would not cut private footage out of context, including conversations with his attorney that were never intended for public viewing,” Combs’ statement said. “No rights in that material were transferred to Netflix or any third party.”

Combs’ statement said it was “equally surprising” that Netflix would hand over “creative control” to Jackson, a “long-time adversary” of the Bad Boy Entertainment founder. In a statement, the rapper claims he has a “personal vendetta” against Combs and that the documentary is the result of that.

Mr. Jackson addressed criticism that the Netflix project was motivated by his own personal ill will toward Mr. Combs, rather than elevating the voices of victims. “If I didn’t say anything, hip-hop would interpret his behavior as okay,” he said. “There’s no one else speaking out… something like this would register an entire culture as if it supported that action.”

Combs’ team claims that the Netflix docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning is a “personal breach of trust” that goes “beyond a legal matter,” adding, “Mr. Combs has long admired Ted Sarandos and admired the work of Clarence Avant.”

“For Netflix to tell his life story to someone who has publicly attacked him for decades feels like an unnecessary and deeply personal affront,” the statement concluded. “At least he expected fairness from the people he respected.”

Pregnant Cassandra Fine Ventura, known professionally as Kathy, became the star witness in Combs’ two-month federal trial over the summer, giving days of harrowing and emotional testimony. Another witness, who testified under the pseudonym Jane, claimed Combs told her “I didn’t want to have sex” and then threatened to stop paying her rent if she didn’t comply with his orders and have sex with another man.

On July 2, a New York jury found Combs guilty of two counts of transportation for the purpose of prostitution and acquitted him of the most serious charges of extortion and sex trafficking.

Netflix “Sean Combs: The Reckoning” release date

The four-part docuseries, titled “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” will be available to stream on Netflix on December 2nd.

When will Diddy be released from prison?

Combs is scheduled to be released from federal prison on May 8, 2028, after 50 months in custody, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ online database. That date is likely to change as he finishes his sentence.

Combs’ lawyers had previously unsuccessfully lobbied a judge to overturn his conviction or grant a new trial.
