Climate change could be worse than we know

0

Effective climate policy requires understanding where emissions come from, how they are changing, and whether companies’ efforts are leading to real reductions.

play

Imagine going to your doctor, who gives you a clean bill of health, only to be called a few weeks later to be told that the test results actually showed a problem. Now imagine if they did the exact same thing again on their next visit. You’ll probably start looking for a new doctor.

That’s the scenario Americans face when it comes to corporate climate data.

When investors pour billions of dollars into sustainable funds, when policymakers create climate regulations, and when consumers choose where to shop based on environmental concerns, they all assume that companies’ emissions data are accurate. But new research from Harvard Business School reveals the troubling reality that that assumption is fundamentally wrong.

An analysis of emissions disclosures filed by S&P 500 companies over a 10-year period found that 74% of companies revised their reported greenhouse gas emissions at least once. This is no small accounting adjustment. We are talking about 135 million tons of underreported emissions, which is more than the entire annual emissions of Venezuela, Nigeria, Qatar, and Kuwait in 2020.

Frankly, we operate in a world without actionable corporate climate data.

The investor dilemma regarding corporate climate data

Revisions in and of themselves do not necessarily mean that a company is intentionally misleading stakeholders. In fact, the ubiquitous revisions may indicate that many companies are committed to accurate disclosure. There is a connection with executive compensation.

This analysis shows that there is a correlation, but not a conclusive relationship, between executive compensation tied to emissions targets and emissions data revisions. When companies add sustainability incentives to executive compensation, they are more likely to reassess their emissions. Furthermore, this situation tends to occur more frequently in companies with governance problems.

Whatever the reason for the revision, the impact on markets and those concerned about the environment is profound.

For example, this level of inaccuracy represents an information crisis for investors. 89% of investors now consider environmental, social and governance factors when making allocation decisions. ESG-focused institutional investment is projected to reach $33.9 trillion globally by 2026, nearly double the $18.4 trillion in 2021.

These are not minor portfolio adjustments, but fundamental changes in the flow of capital in the global economy.

But what happens when the data supporting these trillion-dollar decisions is unreliable? When investors compare Company A’s emissions trends to Company B’s emissions trends, they are essentially making choices based on numbers that can be revised – sometimes significantly – in later years. The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the largest public pension fund in the United States, has committed to moving its entire portfolio to net-zero carbon emissions. How can we achieve such ambitious goals as measurements continue to change?

Unlike financial recalculations, which occur annually in only about 3% of public companies and require detailed disclosure to the Securities and Exchange Commission, emissions revisions occur with surprising frequency and minimal explanation. Companies often embed changes in footnotes or omit them entirely. This is more than just an inconvenience. This is a fundamental market failure that prevents accurate risk assessment.

For lenders, for example, unreliable emissions data creates risks they may not even be aware of. Climate risk is increasingly understood as a financial risk. Banks and other financial institutions are developing sophisticated models to assess climate-related credit risks, determine loan terms, and manage portfolio exposure to carbon-intensive industries. But these models are only as good as the data you feed them.

How can lenders accurately factor climate risk into loan agreements when a company’s reported emissions can change by millions of tonnes with retroactive adjustments? The answer, at least with confidence, is that they can’t.

Policymakers are in the dark about global warming

Policy makers face perhaps the most significant challenge yet. Effective climate policy requires understanding where emissions come from, how they are changing, and whether companies’ efforts are leading to real reductions. Without reliable data, policymakers are essentially acting blindly.

The lack of federal emissions disclosure requirements created a regulatory vacuum following the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the SEC’s climate regulations. There are no federal laws requiring companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions, no widely disclosed standards, and little accountability when data is inaccurate.

States like California have begun enacting their own laws, but they don’t necessarily solve fundamental data quality issues and create a complex patchwork of regulations.

It is impossible to assess whether regulatory efforts are effective unless emissions are accurately measured in the first place.

Stakeholders need to be better informed by corporate climate data

Beyond investors, lenders and policy makers, there is a broader ecosystem of stakeholders that rely on accurate emissions data. Employees, especially younger employees, increasingly want to work for companies that are truly committed to the environment. Consumers make purchasing decisions based on sustainability claims. Communities assess local environmental impacts. Supply chain partners assess each other’s environmental impact.

All of these stakeholders make decisions based on data that is frequently revised and that research shows is undervalued. This is more than a number on a page. It’s about trust.

Even if a company pledges to achieve net-zero emissions or reduce its carbon footprint by a certain percentage, that promise rings hollow if the underlying measurements are unreliable.

It is clear that the voluntary reporting system is not working. Accuracy has not been improved by guarantees from third parties. Market pressure alone is not enough. What we need are standardized reporting requirements with real accountability, and strong regulations that create meaningful consequences for inaccurate disclosures, similar to corporate financial disclosures at the SEC.

Until that happens, investors should remain cautious and assume there is a possibility of underreporting. Lenders will need to incorporate greater margin of error into their climate risk models. Policy makers should prioritize improving metrics and enforcement. And all stakeholders must demand better, because the stakes are too high to accept anything less than accurate data.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5, Episode 5 Recap ‘Shock Jock’

play

Spoiler alert! The following includes details about Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 5, “Shock Jock.”

Well, the Hawkins kids don’t get it right every time.

Stranger Things returned for the second of three parts in its fifth and final season, but after waiting an entire month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, fans were left with a rather unsatisfying run for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Mataraso), and others.

We are at a moment in the story when everything goes wrong and our heroes encounter a major setback. This works, but not on “Stranger”. On the other hand, every story needs to be difficult or I’m not interested in watching it. On the other hand, the way “The Stranger” season 5 is structured, it might feel like a case of one step forward, two steps back.

Either way, we know it will come to an end by the New Year’s Eve finale.

Another day in the paradise of Vecna’s heart palace

So, when it’s all said and done, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) gets the kids anyway.

His little 1950s fantasyland now has a quorum of little bastards running around gassed by “Mr. Watshit” to help him with his evil plan to “draw new worlds to ours,” whatever that means. Just as Lucas predicted, everything goes wrong on November 6th, so the kids have time to fool around in the house. But Vecna isn’t going anywhere. Holly (Nell Fisher) and Max (Sadie Sink) have a difficult escape plan, but luckily they now have Delightful Derek (Jake Connelly) on their side.

However, Hopper (David Harbour), Elle, and their missing sister Eight/Carly (Linnea Bertelsen) manage to escape in the final episode, using Eight’s illusionary powers to escape from Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) and his henchmen. Elle is happy to have met her supernatural brother, but is furious at Hopper’s plan to kill Vecna with a suicide bomb, and does not believe this was not his plan from the beginning. Their battle is interrupted by the disappointing news that Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Steve (Joe Keery), and Dustin are not waiting for them at the original Upside Down church.

No, that dysfunctional quartet is in an upside-down version of Hawkins Laboratory. Because Dustin thinks it hosts some kind of “shield generator” that is building a wall of flesh, and if they destroy it, they will destroy the wall and get to Holly. It’s a half-decent “Star Wars” inspired plan based on what they know at the moment (with unfortunate consequences later on), and everything would be fine if these four weren’t so incredibly awkward and manipulative. But who can put aside relationship drama (romantic or platonic) at the literal end of the world? Apparently no one was there.

Project “Young Frankenstein”

On the ground, everyone is working together more and Will is very excited about his newfound superpowers. However…Will says that’s not the case. his He has powers, but rather he steals powers from Vecna when connected to the hive mind. This plot development is extremely disappointing from a storytelling and character standpoint. Will tapped into these powers by reaching a deep moment of self-actualization in Part 1 of the season. Will has come to terms with himself that he is gay and that his unrequited love for Mike (Finn Wolfhard) is not as important as coming out. The supernatural powers he has acquired are borrow It weakens the emotional arc and returns Will to the weak victim he has been throughout the series. This is a major narrative flaw, and it’s probably only going to get worse from here.

But at least thanks to his borrowed psychic powers, his mother Joyce (Winona Ryder) no longer treats Will like he’s made of glass, and even helps Will formulate a plan to kill Vecna for good. Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) comes up with the details. Electricity from a radio station illuminates the dead Demogorgon, connects Will to the hive mind, and mentally attempts to kill Vecna (which, as the characters explain, makes some sense). His sister Erica (Priah Ferguson) also suggests enlisting the help of Mr. Clark (Randy Havens) to build a new telemetry tracker to locate all those lost in the Upside Down.

In Upside Down, Steve, Dustin, Jonathan, and Nancy are bickering as they search Hawkins Lab. Nancy and Jonathan argue over who is or isn’t honest in their relationship before finding a strange melted door that they think is worth investigating. Steve and Dustin fight over Dustin’s reaction to Eddie’s (Joseph Quinn) death in Season 4, with Steve even badmouthing the deceased. The two brothers actually receive a physical blow that breaks a handheld radio and takes Dustin to an office full of very interesting science-related materials.

Elsewhere, Elle and Carly become much better friends, but Carly tells a very sad story about how she ended up in Dr. Kay’s lab. The military found her, killed her friends, imprisoned her, mutilated and tortured her, and repeatedly stole her blood. At one point, Carly almost ran away, but instead she discovered a room where dozens of pregnant women were being injected with blood. Dr. Kay’s plan is revealed. She is trying to create more supernatural children. And it looks like the source of Elle and Carly’s powers isn’t drugs, but good old Henry/Vecna blood. And while Kali’s blood has no effect on pregnant women, Kei is convinced that Elle’s blood does.

the end of the world as we know it

All the different groups carry out their plans as the episode approaches its climax. Derek distracts Vecna while Max and Holly try to travel to the exit using Vecna’s Holly-based memories. Unfortunately, Vecna quickly captures Derek and threatens his family until he confesses what is going on. (P.S. Where is Derek’s family? Last time we saw them, they were drugged and tied up in a barn. Did Joyce and the others just leave them there? Is someone going to bring them food and water?)

Around this time, the team on the ground lights up the demo, and Will suddenly jumps into Derek’s mind (sure enough) and realizes that Vecna is targeting Max and Holly. The duo finds the correct Holly memories for the exit, but Vecna finds them first and nearly kills Max. But then Will takes him in and tells Max to run, and Vecna and Will have a creepy little battle of wits. This isn’t the final episode yet, so of course Vecna wins and Will gets trapped in Vecna’s fantasyland (in his mind anyway), but that’s the gory part.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Nancy and Jonathan find what appears to be a “shield generator” on the roof of the lab and decide to fire a shotgun shell at it (sure enough). Just then, Dustin runs up to them, yelling that if he destroys it, he can kill them all. Cut to black.

Everyone is okay, right?

Taylor Swift celebrates Christmas and cheers on Chiefs vs. Broncos

0

Taylor Swift is watching the Chiefs’ final home game of the season, likely watching as her fiancé Travis Kelce takes in his final snaps at the stadium where he’s been an anchor for the past 13 years.

The 36-year-old superstar arrived at the Christmas Day game wearing a red leather jacket and black miniskirt with her family – father Scott Swift, mother Andrea Swift and brother Austin Swift.

One episode of Swift’s Ellas Tour documentary series released this week focused on how her close-knit family made the tour a success.

Will Travis Kelce retire?

With his Dec. 25 appearance, Swift has played in a full home game for the 2025 season, marking the second year in a row that he has appeared in only Arrowhead’s games during the regular season. But amid all the holiday cheer, one question looms in Kansas City. Will jersey number 87 be retired?

USA TODAY sportswriter Jack McKessie noted that talk of retirement escalated after the Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 15. Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, said during ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” that Travis needed “some distance” before making a life-changing decision.

Kelce discussed the possibility of retiring along with another legendary tight end, Tony Gonzalez, in an interview that aired before the game on Prime.

“Obviously, I think I’m feeling motivated after seeing the way this game ended with a sour taste in my mouth, but I had to make the decision that was right for me,” Kelce said. “I still have a lot of love for this game.”

Kelce, who turns 37 next year, now faces a crossroads similar to the one Jason encountered. His contract runs through the end of the 2025 season and the roster is on the verge of change, meaning the Chiefs will end the year outside of the postseason for the second time in his career.

3 years of supporting Swift

While Kelce considers her future, Swift’s three years in the NFL spotlight defined her time in football.

In 2023, she shocked the Swifties by showing up at a Chiefs-Bears game sitting next to Donna Kelce. Since then, she has played in dozens of games over three seasons. For the first two seasons, she jet-setted between stops on the Ella Tour, including a dramatic sprint from Tokyo to Las Vegas for a spot in the 2024 Super Bowl after performing four consecutive concerts. In season 2, she famously turned the Arrowhead Tunnel into her personal airstrip. Season 3 took a quieter approach, with Swift attending only home games and keeping her appearances low-key and low-profile.

Swift’s rise as an NFL regular included two consecutive Super Bowl trips. She kissed Kelce on the field after the Chiefs beat the 49ers in overtime in 2024. A year later, during the Chiefs-Eagles rematch, the cameras caught her for less than five seconds, prompting loud boos from Eagles fans.

Swift lifts the curtain on the couple’s love story, which blends soccer and fairy tales, in the Disney+ documentary series. Her mother, Andrea Swift, admitted to doing due diligence early on and urged her daughter to give the tight end a chance. Swift says he fell in love with the American sport after Kelce described soccer as “like a violent chess” on their first date. He proposed to her on Aug. 13, after the taping of the “New Heights” episode in which she released her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl.”

Imani Dear Smith, who starred in Broadway’s “The Lion King,” has been stabbed to death. Her boyfriend was charged with murder.

play

Former Broadway actor Imani Dear Smith was stabbed to death in central New Jersey, and her boyfriend has been charged with her murder.

The 26-year-old mother, who starred in the Broadway production of “The Lion King” as a child, was found with multiple stab wounds on Sunday morning, Dec. 21, prosecutors said in a press release. Paramedics took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The suspect, Jordan Jackson Small, 35, was arrested shortly after. Prosecutors said the two had known each other before Smith’s death and confirmed that “this was not a random act of violence.” According to Smith’s GoFundMe page, Jackson Small was her boyfriend.

He is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Jackson Small is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending the outcome of a pretrial detention hearing.

Attorney information for Jackson Small was not available.

Family mourns ‘vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person’

Smith’s family is grieving the “unimaginable event” as they raise the 3-year-old son she left behind.

The GoFundMe page has raised more than $61,000 as of Thursday, Dec. 25. Donations will go toward funeral costs, crime scene cleanup, trauma treatment, time off from work, and legal and administrative costs.

“Imani had her whole life ahead of her. She was bubbly, loving, and fiercely talented. A true three-way performer, most notably playing the role of young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, an experience that reflected the joy, creativity, and light she brought to the world,” the description reads.

The page aims to help Smith’s parents grieve and care for their family without the added fear of financial uncertainty.

The Edison Police Department encourages anyone with information regarding Smith’s death to call (732) 718 – 8064 or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745 – 8083.

Jimmy Kimmel warns Britain about ‘King Donny VIII’ in Trump’s Christmas message

The ABC late-night show host addressed British viewers with a Christmas message slamming President Trump.

play

Jimmy Kimmel may have finished his last show of 2025, but his criticism of President Donald Trump is not yet on vacation.

The late-night talk show host gave another Christmas message to British television viewers on Britain’s Channel 4, where he said “tyranny is booming” in the United States.

“I guess the president of my country wants to silence me, because I don’t worship him the way he likes. The American government made threats against me and the company I work for, and then all of a sudden it went off the air. But then you know what happened? A Christmas miracle happened,” he said.

During the speech, he said in September that ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live! It was canceled in the United States after receiving criticism for its comments regarding the shooting death of Charlie Kirk. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by President Trump, pressured the networks to take action against Kimmel, sparking protests and accusations of government censorship.

Kimmel praised the “millions of people who stood up and said, ‘This is unacceptable,'” including the show’s fans and critics who joined in defending free speech.

“So many people spoke out, so we’re back. Our show is back and stronger than ever,” he said. “We won, but the president lost. And now I’m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on earth the retribution that is just and deserved.”

White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson told USA TODAY, “To react to Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Christmas Address,’ you have to see it, but like many Americans, I didn’t even know it was happening. Unfortunately, Jimmy once again wasted his time doing something no one wants to see. Merry Christmas!”

Kimmel warns Britain about ‘King Donny VIII’

The Emmy-winning comedian said he delivered this message to warn Britain that government silence doesn’t just happen in Russia, North Korea or Los Angeles, adding: “That’s what we thought.”

“And now King Donny VIII is calling for his execution,” Kimmel quipped, referring to a Nov. 20 Truth Social post in which President Trump accused six Democratic members of Congress of “sedition and deserves the death penalty!” Trump later clarified in a Nov. 21 interview on Fox News’ “The Brian Kilmeade Show” that he was not actually threatening to execute any Democratic congressman.

Kimmel also detailed a series of “No Kings” protests across the country this year denouncing the Trump administration.

“For the record, we have nothing against your king. I mean, I don’t know if you know this, but his son lives here,” he joked, alluding to Prince Harry. “Some of us have a problem with the person we think is our king. Right now, here in the United States, we are figuratively and literally destroying the fabric of our democracy, from the freedom of the press to the independence of science, medicine, and the judiciary to the actual White House itself.”

He continued, “We are righteous disruptors and I know this affects you too. And I just wanted to say, I’m sorry, but what I want you to know, or at least know, is that we’re not all like him. We’re not all like that.”

Kimmel urged Britons to have faith in Americans this holiday season, as the country is “in a bit of a volatile situation right now.”

“We’ll be back. It may not seem like it, but we love you. We love you even the things you don’t like, like Simon Cowell. We’re not smart. We’re Americans. No one knows better than you. We’re always a little late to the game. But will we get over it in the end? Maybe. Give us three years.”

Maybe the NFL’s Christmas tripleheader just didn’t work out the way the league’s schedule creators had hoped. And in some ways, it probably won’t go as expected, given the fuss that was made just last month on Thanksgiving. But that doesn’t mean Thursday didn’t provide some moments, memories, and generally Christmas-filled entertainment.

Unsurprisingly, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders 30-23 in the first game of the day…even if it didn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Amazingly, the Minnesota Vikings took the Detroit Lions to the hut in Game 2 and won 23-10, effectively ending their NFC North rival’s season. (The Broncos and Chiefs met in the nightcap.)

What about the big picture on the other side of the scoreboard? So without further ado, let’s unravel the NFL’s Christmas winners and losers.

winner

green bay packers

No, they didn’t have to play on Christmas. I made it home comfortably with my family while waiting for Saturday night’s showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. However, Puck got a wonderful gift under the gathering tree. It’s an upset of the Vikings for the Lions to at least lock Green Bay into the playoff field as a wild card entry. And with fewer jeopardy this weekend, the Packers will be able to make a more rational decision to rest injured quarterback Jordan Love and running back Josh Jacobs.

duck prescott

Dallas’ QB1 passed for 307 yards and two touchdowns in this game, but it meant nothing to the team other than playing for pride. What about him? He has a 30-TD passing season for the fourth time in his career and still has a chance to become the first Cowboy to lead the NFL in passing yards.

snoop dogg

I prefer dad rock to hip-hop, but The Dogfather’s halftime show set up by Martha Stewart at Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium didn’t lack for creativity or production value. And even a middle-aged guy like me could appreciate a mix of Snoop classics interspersed with Christmas carols performed by KPop Demon Hunters (HUNTR/X), Andre Bocelli, and Laney Wilson. And believe me or not, USA TODAY’s national music writer Melissa Ruggieri (read her article) admitted that the NFL guy is spot on. Honestly, it’s comparable in quality to the Super Bowl halftime show, especially if you’re a Vikings fan who paid money to watch this level of football.

vikings defense

Not only did they turn Detroit over six times, they shut down the Lions’ offense, allowing just 10 points and 231 yards while collecting five sacks. Averaging 3.6 yards per play, Detroit never looked easy against the swarming Scandinavians…and it cost the Lions dearly.

cowboys uniform

In fact, it’s a first for Dallas. “America’s Team” combines white pants with a new white helmet (which was introduced in 2022 and is basically an alternate white-based version rather than a throwback to the usual silver helmet) and a highly underrated navy jersey. They looked sharp and played accordingly.

Speaking of uniforms…

On Thursday, the Vikings played at home wearing all-white “Winter Warrior” replacements, while the Lions, their NFC North rivals, wore rarely worn all-black uniforms. It’s no secret who was cast in the heel role — and on a night when WWE star Seth Rollins appeared on the pre-match show — even though Vikes was acting as a spoiler while the Lions desperately cling on to the playoffs. (But in Minnesota, which boasts some of the best venues and conditions in the league, the winter theme looked pretty cool.)

Ian Eagle and staff

Netflix has hired a top-notch broadcast team to stream the Cowboys vs. Commanders game. Eagle’s sense of humor, in-game acumen, and willingness to incorporate pop culture references and Netflix promotions made him the perfect choice for play-by-play duties. Mix in the sharp, sartorially savvy Nate Burleson with straight-ish former league MVP Matt Ryan, and there was no shortage of analysis.

Thank you, Austin.

Despite missing the season with a torn Achilles tendon, the coach’s running back was ready for the Washington-Dallas game. It’s a great opportunity for one of the brightest men in the game. And given that the 30-year-old Ekeler doesn’t have a contract for 2026 and will need to take another step toward at least a pending transition to life after football, it could be a sign of a transition… whenever it comes.

Jacory Croskey Merritt

Washington’s top rusher had an uneven rookie season, tasked with filling the void left by Ekeler and the departed Brian Robinson Jr. But “Bill” Crosskey Merritt had one of his best games of the year, eclipsing the century mark for the second time and recording his second two-TD game. In his second game, he recorded 72 yards, setting a new professional record. He continues to look like a player ready for an even bigger role in 2026.

Netflix

For the second year in a row, the streaming giant delivered an NFL football gift this Christmas with the Cowboys vs. Commanders and Lions vs. Vikings games, delivered to viewers around the world in partnership with CBS and NFL Network production. It’s certainly a win for Netflix, but it’s also an important win for the NFL as it continues to expand its international reach.

loser

Netflix

You’d think they’d have lost a significant amount of streams considering the Dallas-Washington game had no playoff implications, but the Commanders lost 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Jaden Daniels to QB Josh Johnson, whose season is already over. (And yet…the Cowboys, with help from the then-Chiefs, set a regular-season ratings record on Thanksgiving.) In the second window, Minnesota also tried to stay on life support, having to start a backup passer (rookie Max Brosmer) in a game with little stakes other than the Lions, the No. 1 seed in the 2024 playoffs.

Jared Goff

5 turnovers (2 INTs, 3 fumbles). This must have been Lion’s most disappointing day, considering he needed a win to keep his hopes of making the playoffs for the third year in a row alive. Good luck next year, dude.

donovan wilson

Is the head still attached to the Cowboys’ safety? Anti-Jason Witten lowlights.

Javonte Williams and Jake Ferguson

The Cowboys’ starting running back and tight end each had their playing days cut short due to injury, with Williams sidelined with a shoulder injury and Ferguson sidelined with a calf ailment. Williams got some payback for Wilson, but he was also the subject of quite a few conspiracy theories online. But at least both players scored touchdowns for fantasy owners before heading to the sideline.

Dan Campbell

His team fell behind in the biggest game of the year, marking the first time in 10 years that the Lions committed six turnovers in a game. All they had to do was beat the limited Minnesota offense and the overpowered Brosmer. Will a team that went 15-2 and on its way to the No. 1 seed in the NFC in 2024 factor in the offseason narrative that it would suffer if coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn don’t go? Yes, obviously it was.

Pope Leo condemns conditions for Palestinians in Gaza on Christmas

0

play

Pope Leo condemned the plight of Palestinians in Gaza during his Christmas homily, an unusual direct appeal to the Palestinians in what is normally a solemn spiritual service on the day Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus.

America’s first pope, Leo, said the story of Jesus’ birth in a stable shows that God “pitched a fragile tent” among people around the world.

“So why can’t we think about the tents in Gaza that have been exposed to rain, wind and cold for weeks?” he asked.

Leo, who is celebrating his first Christmas since being elected by the world’s cardinals in May to succeed the late Pope Francis, has a quieter, more diplomatic style than his predecessor, typically refraining from political references in his sermons.

The Pope, who has made concern for immigrants a central theme early in his papacy, later lamented the situation of immigrants and refugees “traversing the Americas” in his Christmas blessing.

Leo has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration in the past, but he did not mention Trump. In his Christmas Eve homily on Wednesday, the pope said refusing to help the poor and strangers was tantamount to rejecting God himself.

Leo denounces war’s ‘rubble and open wounds’

The new pope has lamented the situation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip several times in recent days, telling journalists last month that the only solution to the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people requires the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in October after two years of heavy Israeli shelling and military operations following a deadly attack on an Israeli community by Hamas-led fighters in October 2023. Humanitarian groups say aid supplies are still too low for Gaza, where nearly the entire population is homeless.

At Thursday’s service, which drew thousands of people in St. Peter’s Basilica, Leo also lamented the situation of homelessness around the world and the destruction caused by the wars that are roiling the world.

“The bodies of defenseless peoples are fragile and have been tested by many wars, ongoing or concluded, which have left behind rubble and open wounds,” the Pope said.

“The hearts and lives of young people who are forced to take up arms are fragile. On the front lines, they feel the meaninglessness of what is being asked of them and the falsehoods filled with pompous speeches from those who are driving them to their deaths,” he said.

Pope laments conflicts in Ukraine, Thailand, Cambodia

On Thursday, in the Pope’s “Urbi e Orbi” (Cities and World) message and blessing for Christmas and Easter, Leo called for an end to all world wars.

Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to a crowd of thousands gathered in the square below, he lamented the political, social and military conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Mali, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and elsewhere.

Mr Leo said the people of Ukraine were “suffering” from the violence as Russian forces threatened cities important to the country’s eastern defenses.

“May the cries of arms cease, and may the parties concerned find the courage to engage in honest, direct and respectful dialogue, with the support and commitment of the international community,” the Pope said.

Mr Leo called on Thailand and Cambodia to restore their “old friendship” and “work towards reconciliation and peace” as the border conflict enters its third week, leaving at least 80 people dead.

President Trump: US military attacks ISIS targets in Nigeria

President Trump said “many perfect attacks” had struck Islamic State terrorist targets in the West African nation of Nigeria.

play

President Donald Trump announced on December 25 that the US military had attacked Islamic State targets in Nigeria.

In a post on Truth Social, the president said he had directed the military to launch “a strong and deadly attack against the ISIS terrorist scum in northwestern Nigeria that is targeting and brutally killing mainly innocent Christians at levels not seen in years, or even centuries.”

“I have previously warned these terrorists that they will face hell if they do not stop their slaughter of Christians, and tonight that is exactly what happened,” Trump continued, adding that the Pentagon carried out “numerous” attacks against ISIS targets in the region.

The announcement came after the US military began airstrikes on multiple ISIS targets in Syria on December 19, following the deaths of two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter.

This is a developing story.

Why Erin and Ben Napier won’t host the next Hometown Takeover

0

“Home Town” fans can get ready for a new spinoff of the HGTV show, but note that Erin and Ben Napier are not the hosts.

“Home Town,” which launched in 2016 and propelled the couple to fame, had several offshoots, including “Home Town Takeover,” “Home Town Kickstart,” and “Home Town: Ben’s Workshop.”

The next “Hometown Takeover” will be held in Canada, but that location is the reason these two won’t be the main hosts of the series.

“Our production company is Canadian. The people who make our shows are passionate about this Canadian acquisition,” Erin Napier told CinemaBlend. “But because we are Americans, we are not legally allowed to host the show. We can only appear on the show as guest stars.”

Ben added, “Canadian broadcast programs must be hosted by Canadian talent.”

In April 2023, Canada passed the Online Streaming Act, which aims to “increase opportunities for Canadians to see themselves through what they see and hear,” “support Canadian creators and the creative industries,” and “increase the representation of equity-seeking groups.”

The Napiers, who married in 2008 and are parents to Helen and Mae, founded Laurel Mercantile Co. to promote the revitalization of Laurel, Mississippi. Home Town focuses on renovating local historic homes and partnering with local merchants.

The show’s spinoffs have maintained its belief in revitalizing small towns. North’s new “Takeover” host has not yet been revealed, but the couple has their full support. “We know who it is, and I can tell you we really like them,” Ben told the outlet. We are also a husband and wife team.

Meanwhile, fans can watch the new season of “Home Town” on Jan. 4 (HGTV, 8 p.m. ET/PT). Sometime next year, viewers will also get to see the transformation of the Heirloom Hotel, which was severely damaged by a devastating fire over the summer.

This 30-room boutique hotel in the Napier family’s hometown of Laurel, Michigan, was part of HGTV’s “Inn This Together.” However, on August 26th, a fire broke out in the building. In an Instagram post, Erin shared that she witnessed the fire along with close friends and venue owners Mallory Nowell, Jim Raspberry and Joshua Nowell. “We hugged each other and watched the brave firefighters of Laurel FD spend hours putting out the fire. Today feels like a funeral,” Erin wrote in a post.

Earlier this month, Erin confirmed to USA TODAY that the renovations will air in 2026, although no date has been set. “They’re still figuring out the next step and finding ways to keep asking, ‘Where do we go from here?'” Erin says. “And I don’t know yet where they’re going to go, but I’m proud of them. If you want to see human perseverance and the spirit of doing difficult things, even if it doesn’t go the way we all expected and hoped and were excited about, it’s going to be that hotel series.”

Bankruptcies hit the alcoholic beverage and spirits industry across the United States.

0

play

If you need a stiff drink this holiday season, sorry distillers and distillers.

Over the past year, makers of whiskey and other alcoholic beverages have faced a variety of challenges, from Americans cutting back on their alcohol intake for health and spending reasons to declining exports hampered by trade issues and tariffs.

Restaurants and retail stores won’t be the only ones facing bankruptcy in 2025. Several distilleries across the country have filed for bankruptcy this year, the latest of which is AM Scott Distillery, which was founded in Troy, Ohio in 2022. The distillery, which operates a store in Dayton, filed for Chapter 11 on Dec. 22.

Elsewhere earlier this year, Luca Mariano Distillery in Danville, Kentucky, and its parent company LMD Holdings filed for bankruptcy in August. Devils River Distillery in San Antonio and JJ Pfister Distillery in Sacramento, California (both in May). House Spirits Distillery in Portland, Oregon (April). Boston Harbor Distillery in Boston and Lee Spirits Co. in Monument, Colorado (both in March).

According to an August Gallup poll, the percentage of U.S. adults who say they consume alcohol is at an all-time low (54%), and bankruptcies are partly due to a decline in alcohol consumption. That’s down from 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023, according to Gallup.

Among people who drink alcohol, the average number of drinks consumed in the past seven days was 2.8, the lowest number recorded by Gallup since 1996. Over the past eight years, he was measured drinking approximately four drinks per week.

Spirits suppliers aren’t just concerned about consumption in the United States. Trade tensions, including tariffs, led to a 9% drop in spirits exports in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period a year ago, according to the U.S. Distilled Spirits Council’s mid-year export report.

According to DISCUS, exports to the EU, UK and Japan declined during the period, but exports to Canada fell the most, plummeting 85% to below $10 million in the second quarter. In response to U.S. tariffs on Canada, most Canadian provinces banned U.S. spirits from stores, but the country lifted the retaliatory tariffs in September.

“There is growing concern that international consumers are increasingly choosing domestic spirits and imports from outside the U.S., signaling a shift away from great American spirits brands,” DISCUS President and CEO Chris Swonger said in a statement accompanying the report.

Jim Beam Distillery to cease operations in 2026. Is the trade conflict between the US and Canada the cause?

Jim Beam will suspend operations at its flagship distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, indefinitely starting in January 2026. “We are constantly evaluating production levels that best meet consumer demand and recently met with our team to discuss production volumes for 2026,” company officials told the Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, on Dec. 21.

Canadian businessman and “Shark Tank” judge Kevin O’Leary told NewsNation that trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada may be a contributing factor. “This is a self-inflicted mess,” he wrote in a post on X. “When a major bourbon producer goes out of business for a year, it shows that politics, not the market, is getting in the way of common sense.”

Mr O’Leary said the “tariff game” was hurting “businesses on both sides of the border”.

Beer makers also deal with poor business performance

Brewers are also not immune. Most recently, Oregon’s Rogue Ales & Spirits closed on November 14th and filed for bankruptcy on November 24th. Founded in 1988, the brewery “for decades has been known primarily for its innovation and experimentation,” Beer Bible author Jeff Alworth writes on his Viavana blog.

Another longtime industry player, the Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant chain, founded in November 1996 in Newark, Delaware, filed for bankruptcy in October.

This is the second year in a row that brewery closures outnumber brewery openings, according to the Brewers Association. To date, the industry group has tracked 268 new brewery openings and 434 closures. The trade group says there are 9,778 small, independent breweries in the United States.

“Changes in consumer behavior, retailer rationalization, rising costs due to inflation and tariffs, and more competition than ever make 2025 even more challenging,” Matt Gatchuk, staff economist at the Brewers Association, said in the 2025 Beer Report. “Nonetheless, brewers are working to meet today’s challenges head-on by adjusting their products and, in some cases, their entire business models.”

Beer sales fell 3.1% in dollar terms in the first half of 2025, according to data firm NIQ, which tracked sales at U.S. supermarkets, drug stores, mass merchandisers, convenience stores and liquor stores for 52 weeks ending July 5, 2025. Wine sales fell by 5.9% and spirits by 2.8%.

Growth segment?Ready-to-drink cocktail sales increased by 1.7%.

All of this coincides with a boom in non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits, with category sales continuing to grow after increasing 27% in 2024 to $829.2 million, according to NIQ.

Dave Williams, vice president of analytics and insights at Bump Williams Consulting, a Connecticut-based alcoholic beverage industry specialist, told USA TODAY in September that consumers are drinking less alcohol for reasons including health and budget.

“There are a lot of concerns about discretionary income,” he says. “Either you try to save money, you try to cut back on spending, or you just have to make different decisions in terms of frequency and quantity.”

King Charles breaks with tradition and calls for ‘reconciliation’ in Christmas speech

0

The speech comes after a tumultuous year for the royal family.

King Charles continues to put his own stamp on the annual Christmas message.

Queen Elizabeth often gave speeches from her desk in her Buckingham Palace residence while looking at photos of her family. This year, King Charles recorded a message in the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey. This is the first time that a broadcast has been filmed at the abbey, which is known for hosting royal weddings and coronations.

The speech came at the end of a tumultuous year for the family. In November, the king formally stripped his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of his titles and honors and tried to kick him out of the Royal Lodge over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Charles is also facing an undisclosed type of cancer, but said he received “good news” from his doctors two weeks ago and will be able to reduce his cancer treatments in the new year.

Duchess Kate has battled cancer herself, and the relationship between King Charles and Prince Harry remains fragile. (The monarch briefly met his son in September, their first meeting in 19 months, while Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are vacationing with their children in Montecito.)

Therefore, it was striking that the speech was full of themes of honor and integrity. “We need to cherish the values of compassion and reconciliation,” the king stressed, recalling the “courage and sacrifice” of those who fought in World War II. “As we hear of divisions at home and abroad, these are values that we must never lose sight of.” In times of uncertainty, he added, “resilience in the face of adversity, peace through forgiveness” and “respect for one another” offer hope.

The speech was broadcast after the royal family took their annual procession to St. Mary Magdalene Church. Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice also took part in the Christmas Day walk, but their parents Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson did not.

According to the Palace, “Each broadcast carefully reflects current issues and concerns and shares the monarch’s reflections on what Christmas means to them and their listeners. Over the years, the Christmas broadcast has served as a record of global, national and personal events that have affected the monarch and their viewers.”

Cowboys vs. Commanders scores, highlights, and takeaways from the Christmas game

0

play

The Dallas Cowboys already own Thanksgiving. This year they celebrated Christmas.

On Christmas Day 2025, Dallas defeated the Washington Commanders 30-23 in the first of three games. The Cowboys relied heavily on their run game against a Washington front without Daron Payne, gaining 211 yards on the ground and earning their seventh win of the season.

The coaches put up a great fight despite injuries to Payne, quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota, left tackle Laremy Tunsil and running back Chris Rodriguez, who was battling illness. Defense struggles against Dallas’ run game doomed Washington to its 12th loss of the season.

Each team has one game remaining against another rival in the district. The Cowboys will play the Giants on the road. The leaders head to Philadelphia in Week 18. After missing the playoffs this year, both will be in for a long offseason.

Here’s how the Cowboys’ Week 17 Christmas win went down as USA TODAY Sports provided live updates of the first game of the holiday tripleheader.

  • Brian Schottenheimer doesn’t care about your fantasy football game.. In a week where most league championship games were played, the Cowboys’ top two receivers, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, combined for eight catches, 103 yards and zero touchdowns. Dallas placed more emphasis on the run game, with four different rushers totaling 190 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries (an average of 5 yards per carry). Malik Davis led the way with 90 yards on 17 carries.
  • The Cowboys will need to spend this offseason overhauling their defense.. In Dallas’ secondary, 39-year-old Josh Johnson looked like he deserved to start all season at several points in the game, but this was his first start since 2021 and just the 10th of his career. The Commanders’ third-string quarterback threw for 198 yards and a 92.3 passer rating with just one sack, but Washington’s offense nearly kept up with Dallas’ scoring effort. The Cowboys’ offense ranks second in yards per game (393.1 average) and fifth in points allowed (28.3 per game). However, Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs by Week 16. If the defense strengthens, the Cowboys could be back on track to make the playoffs again in 2026.
  • Deebo Samuel was playing like a pending free agent hungry for his next payday. That’s him. Samuel didn’t receive many touches, but each one was outstanding. He finished the game with two catches for 68 yards and two carries for an additional 25 scrimmage yards. Every time Samuel had the ball, he moved quickly, taking on would-be tacklers, taking a few touches, then trucking in some and gaining more yards. Other than rookie running back Ja’Corey Crosskey-Merritt, who rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns in the game, Samuel was the most visible part of Washington’s offense throughout the Christmas game against the Cowboys.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn strategically chose possession and time remaining, instructing his kicker to attempt a field goal on third down with just over two minutes remaining. This would force an additional clock stop on the Cowboys’ next possession, but would allow Washington to honor three timeouts on defense.

Moody’s longest field goal attempt of the day, like his first two, went through the uprights to tie the Managers within seven points. 30-23 Cowboys With a two minute warning. The Cowboys have the ball at their own 33-yard line.

Aubrey missed a 58-yard field goal on the Cowboys’ previous drive, but bounced back with a 51-yard shot on Dallas’ second possession of the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys’ lead was back to 10 points. Dallas leads 30-20. 4 minutes left in the game.

After another Washington drive stalled in the red zone, the command kicker fired a 23-yard field goal through the uprights.

Moody’s second field goal of the day brought the Managers back to seven points. The Cowboys still lead 27-20. 16 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

According to John Machota of The Athletic, Ferguson left the Christmas game against the Commanders with a calf injury and was sidelined for the rest of the game. The Cowboys tight end’s only catch before the injury was a 6-yard touchdown reception, his eighth of the season.

Dallas extends its lead to 10 points with a 52-yard field goal from the kicker. Aubrey went 2-of-2 on his field goal attempts on Christmas Day and also went a perfect 3-of-3 on extra point attempts.

The Cowboys were up 27-17 with 4:42 left in the third quarter.

The Cowboys running back is doubtful to return for the team’s Christmas game due to a shoulder injury, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Williams already has 54 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.

Shortly after former Washington running back Clinton Portis joined the Netflix broadcast, Croskey-Merritt broke through with a 72-yard touchdown run on the helm’s first play on the second possession of the second half.

This score brought Washington within seven points of Dallas. Cowboys still lead 24-17.9:34 left in the third quarter.

Aubrey’s first field goal attempt of the afternoon was a good one from just over 40 yards.

it is, Cowboys lead 24-10 19 seconds left in the first half.

Washington took advantage of three costly penalties by the Cowboys to score its first touchdown: a kickoff short of the landing zone, a horse-collar tackle, and a defensive pass interference.

Crosskey-Merritt scored his seventh touchdown of his rookie season on a 10-yard run, and the Commanders cut Dallas’ lead to 11 points. He would kick the ball back to the Cowboys, who were leading 21-10 with 4:35 left in the first half.

Command safety Frankie Lube ran offside, and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took advantage of the free play to take a deep shot downfield. Turpin took the right throw across the 50-yard line and connected the rest of the way with a touchdown for the Cowboys.

Dallas’ 97-yard touchdown drive had the fewest plays and the shortest time to score of any drive of the day. Cowboys lead extends to 21-3 7 minutes left in the first half.

The Cowboys have run their managers into the ground. Through two possessions, he gained up to 92 yards on 17 carries (5.4 yards per carry).

Williams was the latest beneficiary of Washington’s poor run defense, smashing a rock through several defenders and scoring his second touchdown in as many possessions for Dallas. Cowboys currently lead 14-3 12 minutes left in the first half.

Dallas scored on two back-to-back drives lasting more than five minutes each and had more than a dozen plays on each possession.

The Commanders got inside the Cowboys’ 5-yard line and quarterback Josh Johnson took a third-down sack.

On the ensuing fourth down, Washington’s kicker made a 29-yard field goal, giving his teams their first points of the holiday season. 7-3 Cowboys 4 minutes and 44 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Cowboys’ fourth-year tight end scored his eighth touchdown of the season, setting a new career high, and he did it with flair. Quarterback Dak Prescott’s throw was a bit high, but the 6-foot-5 tight end reached out and tipped the ball toward himself.

Ferguson’s score and kicker Brandon Aubrey’s extra point. The Cowboys led 7-0. The coaches will begin their first possession with 9:42 left in the first quarter.

Netflix will broadcast the Cowboys vs. Commanders game to viewers nationwide on Christmas Day. There will be no national broadcast of the game on cable television.

Fans living in the local market (Dallas or Washington) can watch the game on their local CBS affiliate.

Tickets to watch the Cowboys and Commanders battle can be purchased from multiple sources.

The Commanders will start veteran journeyman quarterback Josh Johnson in the Christmas game against the Cowboys, head coach Dan Quinn announced.

It will be the 39-year-old’s first start since 2021 and the 10th start of his career. Johnson has started nine career games and has a 1-8 record.

Notably, Johnson holds the NFL record for most teams he played for in his career with 14. Here are the players he has played with in alphabetical order.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie make a surprise appearance at Royal Family Christmas

0

The Christmas walk at Sandringham has always been symbolic for the royal family. The procession to St. Mary Magdalene’s Church emphasizes the monarch’s role as head of the Church of England. It was also a moment for the family to show unity and spotlight the future leaders of the family.

King Charles and Queen Camilla led the walk today, followed by Princess Anne. Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Wales, and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were also in attendance.

Those families were expected. But it was a surprise to see Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie join the march.

This show of solidarity comes just over a month after her father Andrew, formerly the Prince of York and now simply Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was stripped of his royal title due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Their mother, Sarah Ferguson, was also revealed to have a closer relationship with Epstein than previously known, according to recently released emails. Neither was seen at the festival.

Questions are swirling over what role Beatrice and Eugenie will play in the royal family following Prince Charles’ decision to strip the Andrew family of their “style, title and honor”. Both retained their royal titles, but it was unclear whether they would take on royal duties.

Taking part in the Sandringham procession means they are foregoing celebrations with their fathers and mothers and choosing to align themselves with the royal family. Eugenia and her husband Jack Bruskbank walked behind Princess Anne, who was escorted by her husband Sir Timothy Lawrence. This placed the couple in a prominent position next to the king and queen. Beatriz and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi were at the end of the group. Neither couple brought their children. Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall and her husband, former rugby player Mike Tindall, were not far behind King Charles.

Andrew Rowney, historian and author of “Title: The Rise and Fall of the House of York,” said attending Christmas with his family will be something of a test. “Prince Charles is putting them to the test and giving them the strange task of finding out what public opinion would be if they were given a royal commission.”

The appearance of the daughters does not necessarily mean that they will be welcomed as full-fledged working royalty. Because Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s relationship with Epstein caused serious financial problems, there may be a need for a more thorough audit of the princesses’ affairs “to make sure everything is in order and nothing embarrassing”, Lowney said. If “skeleton” appear, “you might see them detached,” he says.

Queen Camilla, wearing a bold red coat and matching hat, waved to the well-wishers. King Charles wore a brown coat and brown boots. Princess Eugenie wore a burgundy and brown plaid coat and a burgundy fascinator. Princess Eugenie also wore a plaid coat, but with a smaller plaid pattern and a burgundy pillbox hat.

This will also be Andrew and Fergie’s last holiday at Royal Lodge, where they have lived virtually rent-free for many years. The palace announced that he would instead take up residence at Sandringham Manor. Mr Andrew is reportedly opposed to the move. “He’s basically digging into his heels,” Lowney said.

Winter storm brings snow, cold conditions for post-Christmas travel

0

play

Snow, freezing rain and sleet could disrupt travel for people returning home after the Christmas holidays in parts of the Great Lakes, Northeast and mid-Atlantic, forecasters said.

Snow is expected to fall in the Northeast on Christmas Day and in the upper Midwest later in the day. By Dec. 26, the second system will bring a wintry mix from Michigan across Pennsylvania and into the upper mid-Atlantic region, the National Weather Service said.

“This winter storm is likely to create dangerous travel conditions and delays beyond Christmas,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.

An estimated 122.4 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the holiday season, including nearly 110 million people traveling by car, according to AAA.

Snowstorm could disrupt travel and cause power outages

The fast-moving storm could cause travel disruptions and power outages affecting millions of people, AccuWeather reported. Several inches could accumulate on roads. Ice and snow accumulation can also cause tree branches and power lines to fall.

A quarter-inch of freezing rain is expected to fall across Pennsylvania, but snow will begin to fall on Michigan’s upper peninsula and “moderate to heavy snow” will reach New England from Dec. 26 to Dec. 27, the weather service said.

More than 6 inches of snow could fall in parts of New York, northeastern Pennsylvania, and northern New Jersey. Dangerous ice could also be seen in the Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.

“This could be the biggest snowstorm for New York City so far this season,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Royce.

How much snow can we expect from this winter storm?

According to AccuWeather, the heaviest snowfall will occur in the Catskill Mountains and inland areas of northeastern Pennsylvania, where accumulations will range from 6 to 12 inches. The outlet had predicted that much snow would fall in major cities.

  • Hartford, CT: 3-6 inches
  • New York City: 3 to 6 inches
  • Syracuse, NY: 3 to 6 inches.
  • Boston: 1-3 inches
  • Philadelphia: 1-3 inches
  • Baltimore: Coating up to 1 inch
  • Washington: Coating up to 1 inch

Why you shouldn’t change your seat on an airplane without permission.

0

play

  • Moving to an empty seat on a plane without permission may result in additional charges.
  • Airlines use assigned seats to calculate aircraft weight and balance for safety purposes.
  • Things like premium seats with extra legroom are considered separate, more expensive products.

Cruising Altitude is a weekly column about air travel. Have a suggestion for a future topic? Fill out the form or email us at the address at the bottom of this page.

Not all airplane seats are created equal. Passengers should remember that just because they have a ticket doesn’t mean they can sit wherever they want. Even Southwest Airlines is eliminating empty seats.

It may be frustrating, but just because a seat is available on a plane doesn’t necessarily mean it will be specifically offered to you. It could be a premium seat for which you have to pay extra. Or it may be unavailable for some reason. Or there could be another reason why you shouldn’t sit there for safety reasons.

I know it’s frustrating to see a seat vacated when you’re elbow-to-elbow with your neighbor on a plane, but there’s a good reason for the policy of keeping passengers where they are, and it’s not just about maximizing profits.

Here’s why sitting still on a plane isn’t such a bad thing, and why you should always ask first if you’re moving.

Safety first

General readers are probably tired of seeing me write about how everything in aviation has a safety component, but it’s true. And you might be surprised to know that this extends to seating assignments as well.

“There’s weight and balance, and airplanes need to be balanced in order to fly safely,” Brett Snyder, author of the blog Cranky Flier and owner of the travel agency Cranky Concierge, told me.

Snyder acknowledged that weight and balance are more of an issue in smaller planes, but weight and balance can still be a safety factor in larger planes. Regardless of the size of your airplane, if it’s out of balance it may not be able to take off or land safely, and even a small amount of weight in the wrong place can affect your airplane’s ability to fly.

Last winter, I was flying home from Utah on a relatively empty plane, and the gate agent kept announcing that many of us would be given new seat assignments at the gate. They emphasized the importance of remaining in your newly assigned seat during takeoff and landing to keep the plane properly balanced.

“Airlines will know where people are sitting, use their systems to calculate weight and balance, and load cargo and baggage appropriately to ensure balance is maintained,” Snyder said. “That can still be an issue, and travelers don’t want to mess it up on their flight.”

benefits and privileges

Perhaps this (profit motive) is why most people think that airlines will not allow passengers to move after the boarding doors are closed, and there is certainly some truth to this. The company charges a premium for some seats, and allowing passengers to travel without paying would devalue the product for those who paid for it.

“Once you started getting more legroom, people paid for it, and they felt like it was worth paying for.” “It’s not fair to them, when the people who actually paid for it are angry,” Snyder said.

A United Airlines passenger charged $86 to change seats was most likely trying to move to a seat with more legroom, which many airlines consider a separate ticket class.

United themselves posted (somewhat cheekily) about this kind of move on social media in 2019, and I think what they said then still applies today.

“Customers who choose to pay Economy Plus will be given that extra space. If you bought a Toyota, you wouldn’t be able to drive in a Lexus because it was empty.^BA,” the airline’s post said.

That idea makes sense to me too. If there are customers who are willing to pay extra for extra space, or who have been upgraded as a result of their loyalty to the airline, shouldn’t those passengers also experience greater benefits on less-than-full flights?

I also think more companies should post on social media with the philosophy that if you ask a stupid question, you’ll get a straight answer, but that’s not the problem.

What to do if you are dissatisfied with your assigned seat

If you’re getting ready to board a plane and aren’t happy with your assigned seat, there are a few things you can do.

First, you should check whether you can change your seat on the airline’s app or website.

“In many cases, you can do it in an app, and that’s perfectly fine,” Snyder said. “Self-service is the best.”

If that doesn’t work, you can try talking to the gate agent in charge of your flight, but he cautioned that they may not always be able to help you.

“Generally, what’s best is when someone at the gate isn’t overwhelmed and has time, but they’re trying to do a million things to get the plane out on time,” Snyder said.

Snyder cautioned that your last resort is to talk to a flight attendant, but that’s only worth doing if there’s a serious problem.

“Maybe the flight attendants will be able to help you, and if you want to move to a seat with more legroom, they’ll take the fare on board, but if you don’t, it just makes the flight attendants’ job that much harder,” he said, but cautioned that “if you’re on a plane and you have legitimate concerns, such as health or safety concerns, you should absolutely talk to the flight attendants at that time.”

If you’re feeling unlucky or just want to let the computer do the work for you, you can take advantage of the “Quick Pick” option, where a computer-generated number is printed on your Powerball ticket. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls with the red Powerball in any order.

President Trump celebrates Christmas with attack on ‘radical left scum’

President Trump’s social media accounts posted numerous messages addressing the political issues surrounding the holiday. President Vladimir Putin also wished the president a happy holiday.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump rang in social media posts enough to fill Santa’s sack with holiday cheer for his political adversaries, “radical left scum,” and a growing economy this Christmas.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on December 25 that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations and wished President Trump a Merry Christmas in return.

But Trump wasn’t about to put a chunk of precious coal in his opponent’s stocking. He called the coal “clean and beautiful” to a child during a round on Christmas Eve.

The president’s Truth Social and X accounts posted numerous messages from just before midnight to around 1 a.m. on Dec. 25. The messages called for resolutions on topics including fraud charges against Somali immigrants, Georgia’s 2020 election results and reporters in general.

In posts on Truth Social and

The fraud charges occur in Minnesota, the home state of Gov. Tim Walz, a 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate against President Trump.

Trump’s posts about Georgia continued to contest his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the state, even after charges of election fraud were dropped in November. Trump has long criticized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for filing the lawsuit.

President Trump also appears to have added New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) to his naughty list.

James won a civil judgment against him, but it was overturned on appeal. Comey led the investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Schiff then led Trump’s first impeachment, which resulted in Trump’s acquittal. President Trump urged prosecution of all of them.

“We will not tolerate gaslighting from anyone in the media or anyone on the other side,” White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a video that President Trump reposted.

President Trump sprinkled some political spice on his Christmas cheer.

He reminded disgruntled people in the Senate that he wants to end the filibuster, which blocks bills without the support of 60 members in the 100-seat chamber. He reposted a message from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) urging an end to the “zombie filibuster.”

And the two-term Republican president reposted a message from comedian Roseanne Barr urging an end to mail-in voting.

On the other side of the ledger, President Trump’s posts foreshadowed weaker crime statistics and an annualized economic growth rate of 4.3% in the third quarter.

Every major pop culture milestone since ‘Stranger Things’ premiered

Trump’s first term is just months away, Taylor Swift made her comeback in 2017, and the infamous Game of Thrones finale aired in 2019 — all big moments since the premiere of Stranger Things.

play

On November 26th, we will embark on our final journey to the Upside Down.

After more than three years between seasons, “Stranger Things” returns with its fifth and final batch of episodes. They will be released at staggered times between now and New Year’s Eve.

How long it will take to make season 5 of the TV show has become something of a joke on social media. The first season premiered on July 15, 2016. For context, Leonardo DiCaprio had just won his coveted first Oscar for “The Revenant,” Beyoncé had dropped “Lemonade” less than three months earlier, and Drake’s “One Dance” was on track to be crowned song of the summer.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump was still months away from being elected for his first term, and people were losing solidarity with the all-female movie “Ghostbusters,” which was released in theaters on the same day. Music icons David Bowie, Prince and Glenn Frey all passed away earlier that year, while TikTok sensation Christian “The Rizzler” Joseph was just 12 weeks old at the time.

Here are more of the biggest pop culture moments that have happened since Stranger Things began.

If you need a refresher on seasons 1-4, USA TODAY entertainment reporter Brendan Morrow has a complete synopsis here..

“La La Land” mistakenly wins Best Picture over “Moonlight” (February 26, 2017)

An unfortunate envelope mix-up led La La Land’s producers to mistakenly believe that the musical had won the Best Picture Oscar, only to receive a rude wake-up speech during the award show that lovable underdog Moonlight had actually won.

Taylor Swift bounces back after controversy with ‘Reputation’ (November 10, 2017)

Swift has become more widely known than ever since 2020’s acclaimed Folklore, but back in 2017, the pop star returned to the spotlight with her divisive sixth album, inspired in part by public backlash and feuds with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

“Game of Thrones” airs controversial series finale (May 19, 2019)

Landmark TV shows “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Barry,” “Atlanta,” “Ozark,” and “Succession” have all come and gone in the years since “Stranger Things” premiered. Meanwhile, HBO’s fantasy tentpole ended with a finale episode that is still fiercely hated by most fans to this day.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan step down from royal duties (January 8, 2020)

Although the reluctant royals announced they were officially stepping away from the British royal family, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan continued to make headlines thanks to their disturbing 2021 sit-down with Oprah Winfrey and a series of questionable ventures with Netflix.

Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal release shocking “Imagine” video (March 18, 2020)

Due to the coronavirus lockdown, many popular TV shows such as “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Tiger King” were aired. Still, nothing has been more addictive than this super-awkward video of celebrities singing John Lennon in earnest to boost morale during the pandemic.

Chadwick Boseman passes away at age 43 (August 28, 2020)

In the nearly 10 years since Stranger Things premiered, a number of megawatt celebrities have passed away, including Aretha Franklin (2016), Carrie Fisher (2016), Anthony Bourdain (2018), Kobe Bryant (2020), and Black Panther star Boseman, whose shocking death after a private battle with cancer shocked Hollywood.

Britney Spears released from conservatorship (November 12, 2021)

Fueled in part by the #FreeBritney movement on social media, a judge ruled to end Spears’ 13-year conservatorship. During this period, the pop princess’s family controlled her career and finances.

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Press Tour Drama Under the Microscope (September 22, 2022)

If you thought the press tour for “Wicked” was crazy, you’ve clearly forgotten about Olivia Wilde’s much-maligned romantic drama “Don’t Worry Darling.” The bizarre sci-fi flick sparked an online uproar over Wilde’s relationship with actor Harry Styles (who was on an extensive tour at the time) and alleged tensions with Florence Pugh on set.

“Babenheimer” fever causes summer box office phenomenon (July 21, 2023)

Think back to happier, simpler times on social media, when the shared release dates of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” organically launched one of the most wholesome (and hugely successful) double features of all time.

Kendrick Lamar takes aim at Drake with “Not Like Us” (May 4, 2024)

Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chapel Lawn were some of the music industry’s biggest breakthroughs of 2024, and Lamar and Drake exploded on the charts with a nasty weeks-long feud.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Found Guilty in Federal Sex Crimes Trial (October 3, 2025)

The disgraced hip-hop mogul was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and sentenced to 50 months in prison after a months-long trial and a summer of voracious media attention for repeated disturbing allegations and testimony.

Is December 26th a federal holiday? What you need to know

0

play

For many people, December 26th may feel like a holiday. Offices are still mostly empty, families are still in town, and employers don’t expect many jobs to end on a Friday like they did in 2025.

However, its status as an official holiday is not the same as Christmas Day.

If the president issues a temporary order, Dec. 26 could become a holiday for federal employees, just as President Donald Trump declared Christmas Eve this year and Dec. 26 in 2025 as federal holidays. Unfortunately, the rest of us are still at the mercy of workplace goodwill.

Christmas falls on a Thursday this year, and Americans are focused on the long weekend that follows. But who gets the day off after Christmas? Also, will your work be interrupted due to temporary closures? Here’s what you need to know.

Is December 26th a federal holiday?

December 26, the day after Christmas, was declared a federal holiday in 2025, but it will not be permanently added to the holiday schedule.

To permanently designate a specific day as a federal holiday, a bill must be passed by Congress and signed into law by the president. This was last done when Juneteenth was added in 2021 under the Biden administration.

It is not at all unusual for presidents to issue temporary leave orders, especially during winter celebrations. In 2014, President Barack Obama declared December 26, which falls on a Friday, as a federal holiday. Trump did the same on Christmas Eve during his first term in 2019 and 2020.

Currently, the only holiday recognized by the federal government is Christmas, which falls on December 25th.

Who takes December 26th off?

Unfortunately, President Trump’s order does not mean most Americans will be able to take time off from work on December 26th.

Many non-government workplaces follow the federal holiday schedule when providing paid time off to their workers. Dec. 26 has not been permanently added to the federal schedule, so those who have not yet taken the holiday are unlikely to benefit from the permanent federal holiday.

According to President Trump’s order, only federal agencies will be closed on that day, but some employees may be required to report to work at the discretion of agency leaders. Private companies can decide to give their employees time off, but they are not required by law.

Will banks, shops, and post offices be closed on December 26th?

While federal government offices may close around Christmas this year, banks, post offices and private retail stores are generally open.

U.S. Postal Service post offices will begin retail trading on Dec. 26, and mail will be delivered the same day. Offices will be closed on Christmas Day and no mail will be delivered.

Banks will follow their normal schedule of closing on Christmas Day and opening on Dec. 26, the Fed said.

Large independent retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Costco follow the traditional rule of only closing on Christmas Day, which generally falls on December 25th. Target stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day. We will resume normal business hours on Friday, December 26th. Similarly, Walmart stores, Costco, and other private businesses will be closed only on Christmas Day.
