Why the Kennedy Center’s annual Christmas Eve jazz show was canceled

The musician leading the annual event canceled the event over a move to put President Donald Trump’s name on the center without Congressional approval.

The annual Christmas Eve jazz concert at Washington’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was canceled after the center’s board of directors, appointed by President Donald Trump, added his name to the building last week.

Musician Chuck Redd, who has led the show since 2006, told CNN he canceled the show “when I saw the name change last Friday.”

The center’s board of directors, which President Trump elected to lead the center earlier this year, voted on Dec. 18 to rename the National Institute of Music, Arts and Culture after Presidents Trump and Kennedy.

Democratic lawmakers, who hold seats on the board ex-officio due to their roles in Congress, argued that the vote, which the administration claimed was unanimous, was improperly conducted. Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), a former ex-officio board member, filed a lawsuit on December 22, arguing that the name change was illegal.

Under federal law, the center’s name remains the John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center. The law that established the center did not give the board the power to change its name.

Christmas 2025 will occur once every 100 years. Here’s why it’s so rare.

0

play

Christmas will be special this year, and not just because of the presents under the tree.

This is the first time in a century that the date of Christmas is the same as the last two digits of the Western calendar. That is, if you write a date in month/day/year format (12/25/25), the day and year will be the same.

This also means that most other countries that use the day/month/year format for dates will write this year’s Christmas date with the same first and last digits (25/12/25).

It may not be as cool as a palindrome date, but if you read the dates back and forth and they’re the same, it’s a fun holiday bit for those who like quirky dates.

Palindromic dates are also much more common than this year’s Christmas date format. According to the University of Portland, there are a total of 38 palindromic dates in the month/day/year format in the 21st century. In comparison, 12/25/25 won’t happen for another 100 years.

Why is this year’s Christmas date unique?

Of course, Christmas always falls on December 25th. However, if you include the last two digits of the Western calendar, this year’s Christmas date will be the same day and year: 12/twenty five/twenty five.

This event hasn’t happened in a century, since December 25, 1925. The next time it will happen will be 100 years later, on December 25, 2125.

The date format is more widely recognized as birthday

It turns out that there are actually names for date formats that correspond to the last two digits of the current year, like this year’s Christmas date.

The “golden birthday” is a well-known term for being the same age as the day you were born, but there is also a term that refers to turning the same age as the last two digits of the year you were born.

According to various websites such as The Gallery Collection and Birthday Counts, a “Bedian birthday” is when a person reaches the same age as the last two digits of their birth year. This means that anyone born in 2025 will have a Bedian birthday when they turn 25.

How many NFL games are there this Christmas? 2025 schedule, channels

play

It doesn’t matter which NFL fans are on the “naughty list” and which ones are on the “nice list.” This Christmas, everyone will receive three gifts from the NFL.

For the sixth year in a row, the league is offering fans a chance to watch pro football during the holiday season while wearing Santa suits. This season marks the third time in the last four years that a Christmas tripleheader has been held, with last year’s Wednesday doubleheader being the only exception since 2022.

For the first time since the league adopted the annual tradition in 2020, all Christmas games will be divisional matchups. Some have higher stakes than others.

Here are the games taking place on December 25th this year and how to watch each one.

How many NFL games are there on Christmas? 2025 Holiday Schedule

There are three games this Christmas:

The first matchup of the day will be a regional battle between two teams that have already been eliminated from playoff contention. The Cowboys and Commanders have nothing to play for except pride and draft position in their second head-to-head matchup of the year. Dallas won Game 1 at home on October 19, 44-22.

The two later Christmas matchups are also divisional matchups. The mid-afternoon game is the second and final game to be streamed on Netflix this holiday season, and will feature a Lions team fighting for a playoff spot visiting a Vikings team that has already been eliminated from contention.

If you heard before the season that the final Christmas game would include a team fighting for the No. 1 seed in the AFC and a team already eliminated, you might have guessed that the Chiefs would be the former and the Broncos the latter. In fact, the opposite is true. Denver will be one win away from clinching first place in the AFC with a win over the reigning conference champions on Christmas Day.

  • Live stream: Netflix (1 p.m. ET, 4:30 p.m. game); Amazon Prime Video (8:20 p.m. ET game)

Netflix will live stream both early games on Christmas.

U.S. NFL fans outside of a competing team’s market will need to sign in to their Netflix account or subscribe to the streaming service to watch. Both matches are available on Netflix plans.

After the early games, fans will need to switch to Amazon Prime Video, the same streaming service that owns the rights to “Thursday Night Football.” The Chiefs-Broncos game will kick off in the prime-time slot on Christmas Day.

The NFL will also stream three games on NFL+, a premium subscription service on mobile devices.

Ranking of the most philanthropic states in the US

0

WalletHub’s rankings use 17 metrics, including volunteer work and percentage of income donated. The wealthiest states are not necessarily at the top of the rankings.

Wyoming is known for its open spaces, natural beauty, majestic mountains, and ancient forests.

However, it is also known for the generosity of its residents.

WalletHub, an online personal finance outlet, recently analyzed philanthropy in all 50 states using 17 metrics, including volunteerism, percentage of income donated, and philanthropy per capita.

Of the five states with the highest household incomes, only Maryland and Colorado made it into the top 10 on the list of most philanthropic states (other wealthy states include California at No. 37, New Jersey at No. 35, Washington at No. 14, and Alaska at No. 12 on WalletHub’s list). Wyoming was followed (in order) by Utah, Maryland, Minnesota, Virginia, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Oregon.

According to WalletHub, the Cowboy State topped the list in part because its residents spend so much time and energy giving back to society. Wyoming residents volunteer an average of about 29 hours a year, the fifth most in the nation. Approximately 34% of residents are volunteers.

But they also have extra pockets, giving away an average of about 4% of their adjusted gross income, the highest percentage in the country. WalletHub reports that more than 40% of Wyoming residents hold fundraisers or sell products and donate the proceeds to charity. The state also focuses on caring for people in need, with the second-highest number of food banks per capita and 82% of the homeless population in shelters.

“The most philanthropic states are not just the places where people give the most,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo wrote. “The proportion of the population that donates money and the proportion of an individual’s income that they are willing to spend to help others are major indicators of how charitable people are.

“Furthermore, many people cannot afford to give as much money, especially due to inflation, but they are willing to donate their time, which is just as important.”

Utah: Top in volunteer work

In Utah, people donate more of their time and talent than anywhere else in the country, with a volunteer rate of about 47% and an average of about 46 hours per year. More than 68% of Utahns say they have helped a friend or neighbor with a babysitting, house-sitting, or equipment loan.

Utahns are also known to donate approximately 3.5% of their adjusted gross income to charity, second only to Wyoming.

Utah topped the list for volunteer work, followed by Vermont. Minnesota and Nebraska tied for third place. Wyoming and Utah led the way in percentage of revenue donated, followed by Arkansas, Georgia, and New York.

The meaning of philanthropy: It’s more than money

Rick Cohen, chief operating officer of the National Council of Nonprofits, said there are factors that influence state philanthropy.

He said large donors could influence the state’s overall donation rate. State-wide income levels can also play a role, which is surprising.

“Those who have received aid in the past are often the most generous because they know how much it means and want to pay it forward,” Cohen said.

North Dakota, Indiana, and Ohio were the top three states for food collection and distribution. Four states are tied for the most charities per capita: Delaware, Vermont, Montana, and Wyoming.

“We’re seeing a lot of donations coming from people who have been beneficiaries even in the last 20 years,” he said. “They know the power of nonprofits. And they know that even if they can’t give $1,000 and only give $10, that $10 still has an impact and the more people give, the more it has an additive effect.”

2 injured in ICE shooting in Maryland: federal officials

On Wednesday, Dec. 24, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents opened fire on a vehicle during a raid in Maryland, injuring two people, federal officials said.

The Department of Homeland Security said officers conducting a “targeted immigration enforcement operation” in Glen Burnie, Maryland, just south of Baltimore, approached a van carrying two undocumented men. DHS said officers ordered the driver, identified as Tiago Alexandre Souza Martins, to turn off the engine, but the driver “refused and attempted to flee” and rammed his van into another ICE vehicle.

“He then drove the van directly towards the ICE officer and attempted to run him over,” officials said on social media.

DHS said ICE agents fired their weapons, hitting Sousa-Martins, who crashed his vehicle. The passenger, identified as Solomon Antonio Serrano Esquivel from El Salvador, was injured in the crash.

Federal officials shared photos of a damaged white van that appeared to have crashed into a tree in a wooded area. Both men were hospitalized and expected to recover from their injuries, the Department of Homeland Security said, adding that no officers were seriously injured.

Anne Arundel County Police Department spokesman Justin Mulcahy told reporters that local police arrived on the scene around 10:51 a.m. and are currently investigating the shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the alleged assault on the officer, Mulcahy added, and ICE is conducting its own internal investigation.

“This is clearly a multi-layered case involving our federal partners,” said Anne Arundel County Police Chief Amal E. Awad.

Maryland governor ‘acknowledges’ shooting incident

Sousa Martins, a native of Portugal, had been in the United States for nearly 17 years after her visa expired, the New York Times and CNN reported, citing federal officials. DHS, ICE and the Anne Arundel County Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from USA TODAY.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said on social media that he was “aware” of the incident.

“As information regarding the incident continues to emerge, we remain in contact with local authorities and stand by to provide assistance to the community,” Moore said.

White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller described the vehicle attack on ICE officers as “domestic terrorism.”

The incident comes as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement across the United States as part of a record number of deportations. Federal immigration raids and deportations have sparked backlash and protests in dozens of states.

In September, an ICE officer shot and killed a man he tried to run over with his car, but security and body camera footage raised questions about the circumstances.

Huge holiday storm continues to evacuate people across Southern California

0

Officials in Los Angeles and surrounding counties warned that the “extremely dangerous” holiday storm could cause “widespread flash flooding.”

play

An atmospheric river storm began dumping heavy rain across Southern California on Christmas Eve, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and flooding communities large and small, prompting evacuation orders.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura and other nearby counties as a powerful storm moved through the region, dumping several inches of rain. By late morning, major highways including Interstate 5 and Route 2 were reporting closures due to flooding and debris flows.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for entire canyon communities in Orange and San Bernardino counties.

In Los Angeles County, officials issued evacuation warnings and evacuation orders for areas ravaged by wildfires earlier this year, including the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, as the risk of debris flows increased.

The National Weather Service office in Los Angeles warned that “flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin soon.” “Debris flows and landslides are expected.”

The Bureau of Meteorology said the storm was “extremely dangerous” and urged holidaymakers to “exercise extreme caution”.

The storm prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in five counties, including Los Angeles and San Diego. Newsom said he mobilized state resources ahead of the storm and pre-positioned rescue workers and equipment across Southern California.

“The volume of calls is overwhelmingly high.”

In addition to heavy rain that could reach 10 inches or more in mountainous areas, officials warned of strong winds that could knock down power lines and uproot trees.

“Very strong winds blowing over soil loosened by heavy rain could increase tree damage, damage to nearby communities, and increase the number of power outages,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill.

Their impact was already being felt. More than 108,000 homes and businesses across California reported power outages on Dec. 24, according to USA TODAY’s power outage tracker.

In Ventura County, dispatchers are already responding to hundreds of calls related to downed power lines, fallen trees and traffic accidents. Rapid water rescue teams and helicopter crews responded to reports of residents stranded due to rising waters.

“We brought in additional emergency dispatchers to keep up with the volume of calls, but the number of calls was still overwhelming,” Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Andrew Dowd said.

Experts warn wind could cause further power outages

The National Weather Service said hurricane-force winds of up to 80 miles per hour were possible in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Wind gusts of 35 to 55 mph are expected in other areas.

The heavy rain, expected to be the worst storm of the season, is expected to continue into Christmas Day before easing over the weekend.

But Merrill urged Southern California residents to remain cautious even after the storm passes. He said the region will be hit by Santa Ana winds over the weekend, which could cause additional power outages and potentially extended road closures.

“Even if the rain stops later this week, if you need to travel from place to place, please be aware that flooding and landslides are still possible,” Merrill said.

The storm came on the heels of torrential rains that caused flooding and at least one death in Northern California.

Jake Paul’s fall vs. Anthony Joshua was terrible: expert opinion

0

play

The knockout will be the highlight of the match.

But another memorable moment from Anthony Joshua’s knockout win over Jake Paul on Dec. 19 at Miami’s Caseya Center was that Paul fell to the canvas multiple times, eliciting boos from the crowd.

In what appeared to be a deliberate tactic, an exhausted-looking Paul fell to the mat six times during the heavyweight bout, which ended in the sixth round. Some comments online accused Paul of attempting an MMA-style “takedown,” at one point causing Joshua to fall onto Paul.

But none of that prevented Joshua from knocking Paul out in the sixth round or breaking Paul’s jaw in two places. However, it sparked a debate and debate ensued as to whether the fall was an ugly tactic that warranted a point deduction from Paul.

After Paul suffered his fifth fall in the fifth round, referee Chris Young brought the fighters together.

“Listen, we need to stop using these tactics, okay?” Young said, looking at Paul. But is it okay to stay within the rules? ”

Young finished the match without a point penalty, as he did after Paul fell again in the sixth round.

“Their fight went their way. It was an ugly fight, a sloppy fight,” Young told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Young said he needs permission from the Florida State Athletic Commission to talk further about the fight.

Remarks from famous referees

Robert Byrd and Kenny Bayless are former judges who are inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. They expressed sympathy for Young, a 44-year-old referee from Florida who was officiating the high-profile boxing match that was live-streamed by Netflix.

“I think he did his best,” Byrd said, “Kenny or I probably would have called time at some point and said, ‘Look, whatever it is you’re doing here, you’ve got to quit.’ It’s got to stop, well. And if it didn’t stop, it probably would have been deducted for … unsportsmanlike conduct.”

Bayless said there was nothing wrong with Young’s conduct.

“I probably would have done basically the same thing, because usually when a fighter comes forward and goes down like that, their legs are starting to get weak,” he said, “and for me, it was Jake’s movement so much trying to get away from Joshua that his legs got weak…”

“There’s not much the referee can do in that situation other than give you a light warning and tell you to be careful what you’re doing.”

Jack Reese, a renowned referee who retired in 2024, defended Young.

“He was trying to survive,” Reese said of Paul. you know what i mean? Jake was trying to survive even though he was hurt. And when fighters are trying to survive, trying to fight, they will do anything to survive. Why punish him for that? ”

“This is not a wrestling match.”

Jake Paul’s brother Logan brought up his frequent falls this week when he invited his mother Pam Stepnick on his podcast.

It turns out that Jake Paul’s mother was against the move.

“I yelled, ‘Stop, this is not a wrestling match,'” Stepnick said, noting that was before he heard any details.

Logan Paul was furious at his brother’s accusation that he was attempting a takedown. Logan Paul said of the waterfall, “It’s a really bad strategy visually, but it saves energy…” and said he asked Jake Paul about it while watching him practice for a match.

Cassius Chaney, one of Paul’s sparring partners during training camp, confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that the fall was something Paul was working on leading up to the fight.

“They wanted (Paul) to go with the flow of the big man’s weight. They didn’t want him to fight the push down (from Joshua) because he would tire faster,” Cheney said of Joshua.

And ultimately, this tactic didn’t spare Jake Paul a shot last fall following the knockout punch.

The search has been suspended for an update on the missing Florida rower.

The search for two missing boaters off the coast of Naples, Florida, has been called off after four days of extensive search efforts.

The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search for Fort Myers attorney Randall Spivey, 57, and his nephew Brandon Billmeier, 33, at sunset on Monday, Dec. 22.

The relatives went missing on December 19, and the search spanned approximately 6,700 square miles of ocean, officials reported.

“After the utmost consideration and careful consideration of all factors involved in this incident, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to discontinue active search operations,” said Capt. Cory Sargent, commander of the St. Petersburg Coast Guard.

“There is no more difficult decision to make than calling off a search. We are deeply grateful to our crews, partners, and volunteers across this community who carried out this massive search with the utmost professionalism, tenacity, and compassion. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of Mr. Spivey and Mr. Billmeier at this very difficult time.”

Brandon Billmeyer and Randy Spivey remain missing

Volunteers from across the southeastern United States have joined the search for men who went missing during a fishing trip about 110 miles off the Naples coast earlier this month.

“This is heartbreaking, but Brandon and Randy would never want anyone to put their lives in jeopardy, and we know they want this decision to be respected,” Deborah Billmeyer, Brandon Billmeyer’s wife, said in a Facebook post.

The FBI is leading the missing persons investigation.

Randall Spivey’s wife, Tricia Spivey, said Spivey and Billmeyer went on a fishing trip about 100 miles off the Naples coast in southwest Florida. When they did not return, the family contacted the Coast Guard.

The men were aboard a 42-foot freeman boat named Unstop-a-Bull, said Luis Garcia, a watchdog with the Coast Guard in St. Petersburg.

The Coast Guard later used GPS coordinates from the boat’s spot-tracking device to find the boat floating upright in a bay about 110 miles off the coast of Naples near Marco Island and Flamingo, but there was no indication that anyone on the boat was missing, Tricia Spivey said.

Two life jackets were missing from the boat, leading the family to believe that Spivey and Billmeyer were wearing life vests.

A drifting boat is discovered

According to the USCG, a Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted a Freeman Boatworks 42LR vessel named “Unstopp-A-Bull” adrift in gear about 110 miles west of Fort Myers around 12 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Spivey’s wife said GPS coordinates from the boat’s spot tracking device led them to the location near Marco Island and Flamingo.

Rescue swimmers descended, killed the engines, and berthed the ship for safety.

“The boat was in gear,” said Riley Perkowski, a public affairs specialist with the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast District. “We sent out a swimmer and the swimmer deployed an anchor to keep the boat from continuing to move.”

Search area for missing Florida boater was vast

On Monday, Dec. 22, search teams were focused on a 20-mile-wide area about 160 miles off the Naples coast, according to a statement from Spivey and Billmeier.

The Coast Guard said crews searched by air and sea before suspending the search pending new information.

“As a family, we are grateful for the resources and volunteers who stepped up to help,” the statement said. “The support, time and effort given means more to us than words can express.”

Who is Randy Spivey?

Tricia Spivey said her husband, a prominent Fort Myers attorney, is well-liked and well-liked.

“He dedicated his life to helping others as a lawyer and helping them in their time of need,” his wife said, adding that he and his nephew are avid fishermen. “That’s why it’s so moving that so many people are now stepping up to look for him.”

In a Dec. 22 statement, Spivey and the Billmeyer family described Spivey as “an incredibly devoted and beloved husband and father.”

“He would do anything for his family,” the statement said. “He also dedicated his 30 years as a lawyer in Southwest Florida to helping injured people. We are so grateful to everyone in the community who helped bring him home.”

Who is Brandon Billmeyer?

Billmeyer recently got married, according to the statement.

“Brandon is also following in his uncle’s footsteps as an attorney helping injured people in Florida.” “He’s a newlywed. We all need to bring Brandon and Randy home because he loves them so much.”

Shiner Law Group released a statement on Dec. 22 regarding the disappearance of Billmeier, a Boca Raton-based attorney who had been with the firm since August 2023.

“This situation is surreal. As the search continues, we continue to pray and hope for the safe return of Brandon and Randy. We respectfully ask the public to keep Brandon Billmeyer and Randy Spivey in their thoughts and prayers.”

Spivey was described as a white male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 245 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. He was last seen wearing khaki pants and a dark shirt. Billmeyer was described as a white male, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 250 pounds, with strawberry hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Coast Guard’s St. Petersburg Division at 866-881-1392.

What is Boxing Day? The meaning and origin of the holiday on December 26th

0

play

Christmas Day means a day off from work and school for millions of people across the country, but what about the next day?

President Donald Trump signed an executive order making Dec. 26 (also Christmas Eve) a federal holiday in 2025, but some countries already recognize the day as their own holiday.

Boxing Day is celebrated in countries such as England and Canada, and is thought to have originated in the Victorian era. Although the holiday didn’t make its way to the United States with early settlers, it remains popular in other parts of the world, giving revelers another day off from work and another opportunity to give gifts, shop, eat, and watch sports.

Here’s everything you need to know about Boxing Day, its origins, and how it became the celebration it is today.

What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated after Christmas on December 26th. It is usually marked by gift-giving, celebrations, and sporting events.

If December 26th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the official holiday falls on the following Monday.

Where is Boxing Day celebrated?

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Boxing Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth countries, particularly Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Origin of Boxing Day

The origins of this holiday are a bit complicated, but the generally accepted theory is that it has its roots in Victorian England.

During Queen Victoria’s reign, it was common for gifts to be given to servants, merchants, and the poor. The servants worked Christmas Day and took the next day off to visit their families. So, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the upper class packed leftover food, goods, and money into boxes and distributed them to the poor.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, another theory is that it comes from opening an alms box provided by the church rather than a gift from an employer.

The 26th also coincides with St. Stephen’s Day, which is celebrated in parts of Europe and named after the first Christian martyr known for helping the poor, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

The evolution of boxing day

The holiday, like many modern celebrations, had its roots in giving back to the poor, but it has changed and become more associated with shopping and sports.

Boxing Day is an official public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and most parts of Australia. Britannica says it’s no longer common for the poor to be given boxes, but it’s not unusual for service workers to receive bonuses during this time.

It is common for families to invite others to enjoy a casual lunch made from Christmas leftovers. Many people also head to stores to shop for post-Christmas sales and to make exchanges and returns.

Traditional sporting events include horse races, fox hunting and rugby, according to Britannica. Fox hunting was later modified or banned entirely, and football matches were held in its place. Other popular sporting events include ice hockey, cricket, and boxing.

President Donald Trump says coal is ‘beautiful’ during call with NORAD Santa and children

Today was Christmas Eve at Mar-a-Lago, and the first couple spoke with children as part of NORAD’s Santa Call.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump sat in gold-trimmed armchairs near a Christmas tree and took part in a long-standing holiday tradition for more than 20 minutes. The president spoke to his family on speakerphone, and the first lady spoke to children on the receiver.

Trump asked children what they wanted from Santa Claus, praised the states he won in the 2024 election and touted the latest GDP report while joking with reporters in the audience. “Great numbers, great finances. I don’t think kids are really interested in that,” Trump said.

Some of President Trump’s comments to children include:

  • When asked by a child in Oklahoma why Santa Claus is being tracked, he replied: “I want to make sure that Santa Claus is not invading, that there is no bad Santa invading our country.” He also told the child, “Never leave Oklahoma.”
  • When the child told him he didn’t want coal as a gift, he replied, “I mean clean, beautiful coal. I had to do that, I’m sorry.” “Please remember” that coal is “clean and beautiful,” he added.
  • While answering a child’s phone call in Pennsylvania, Trump claimed he had won the state “actually three times.” Trump lost the state in the 2020 election.

Trump made six phone calls, saying he could “do this all day” before adding that he had to get back to working on international affairs.

Trump-supporting candidate wins Honduras presidential election

0

play

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – After weeks of delays, technical issues and allegations of fraud, Honduras’ presidential election was finally declared the winner on November 30th, with the electoral body announcing on December 24th that Nasri Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate backed by President Donald Trump, had won.

The election agency, known as the CNE, said Asfulura won 40.3% of the vote, beating center-right Liberal candidate Salvador Nasrallah, who won 39.5%. Rixi Moncada, a candidate from the ruling Libre party, came in a distant third place.

The results were so close, and the voting processing system was so chaotic that about 15% of the tally of hundreds of thousands of ballots had to be counted by hand to determine the winner. The results were certified by two election officials and one deputy, despite continued controversy over the close vote.

A third City Council member, Marlon Ochoa, was not seen in the video declaring the winner.

“Honduras: I am ready to rule. I will not let you down,” Asufura said in a post to X after the results were confirmed.

The president of the Honduran Congress rejected the CNE’s declaration, describing it as an “electoral coup.”

“This is completely outside the law. It has no value,” Luis Redondo, president of the ruling Libre party, wrote about X.

President Trump expressed his support for Asufura, a 67-year-old politician and businessman and former mayor of the capital Tegucigalpa, calling him “the only true friend of freedom in Honduras” and calling on Asufura to vote for him in a post on Truth Social before the election.

President Trump also threatened to cut off U.S. financial aid to Honduras if Asufura did not win, and pardoned former President Juan Orlando Hernández, also of the Asufura National Party, who was serving a 45-year sentence in the United States on drug trafficking and weapons charges.

As vote counting slowed, President Trump again became cautious about the election, alleging fraud without providing evidence and saying Honduras would “pay a hell of a price” if it changed the preliminary results that gave Asufura the advantage.

Experts say Trump’s support for Asfura is part of his push to build a conservative bloc across Latin America, from El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele to Argentina’s Javier Milei.

Both Nasrallah and the ruling Libre party have accused Trump of election interference. Nasrallah told Reuters that Trump’s last-minute intervention hurt his chances of victory.

TV actor and comedian Pat Finn has died at the age of 60. Pat Finn, known for his recurring role on “The Middle,” passed away on Monday, Dec. 22, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by friends and family, after a three-year battle with cancer.

His manager, Andrea Pett-Joseph, confirmed the news to Deadline, calling Finn “the kindest, most fun person in any room.”

Finn, whose long list of credits includes “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “The King of Queens,” “That ’70s Show,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” and “Curve Your Enthusiasm,” was first diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2022. In recent months, after his cancer spread, his friends set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the family’s medical expenses. The page has raised $120,000.

Comedian Jeff Dye was one of the first to pay tribute to Finn after news of his death broke.

“I don’t want to be the guy who posts pictures with dead celebrities. But this guy wasn’t just a celebrity to me. He was a friend,” Dye wrote to X. “One of the best guys I know with a perfect sense of humor. I love you Pat Finn. We’ll meet again someday.”

Comedy writer Brian Stack also paid tribute to his friend in “X.” “We are heartbroken over the passing of our dear friend Pat Finn. He was kind, but very funny. This video of him making his baby daughter Cassidy pretend to drive a bus and do karate kicks in his Chicago apartment in ’96 is priceless. Rest in peace Finner. We love you.”

Finn is survived by his wife, Donna, and their children, Cassidy, Caitlin, and Ryan.

Originally from Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, Finn met cartoonist Chris Farley while attending Marquette University, and after graduating in 1987, they both joined the legendary improv group Second City. By the mid-1990s, he had branched out into television with recurring appearances on “The George Wendt Show” and “Murphy Brown.” He entered the “Seinfeld” canon in 1998 by playing Joe Mayo in the “Reverse Peephole” episode of the classic sitcom. Finn played Dr. Roger in two episodes of “Friends.”

In addition to “The Middle,” where she appeared in 23 episodes from 2011 to 2018, Finn also appeared on “Yes Dear,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “2 Broke Girls” and “The Goldbergs.” Feature film credits included “Hey, Where’s My Car?” “It’s Complicated” with Ashton Kutcher and “I Love You, Beth Cooper” with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin.

Finn expressed gratitude for his life and career in a 2022 interview with Phoenix magazine, saying, “If you told me that if I was in college or high school, I would be living in Los Angeles and driving to the beach and surfing with my son, you would think I was crazy. I don’t know how I ended up in that situation. I feel very lucky and it’s a good fit. It feels right.”

Justice Department misses Epstein deadline by weeks after discovering ‘1 million’ files

0

New York prosecutors have discovered an additional 1 million documents in their investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, and it will take weeks to review and release them, according to the Department of Justice.

play

President Donald Trump, who missed a deadline to release records related to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, announced on December 24 that the process would take “several more weeks” after prosecutors discovered more than 1 million additional documents.

The Justice Department said through its official X account that New York-based federal prosecutors and the FBI had “discovered more than 1 million additional documents potentially related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.” The statement did not say when the documents were discovered.

The department, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, said the release “could take several more weeks” despite having attorneys “working around the clock” to remove information that could jeopardize the privacy of victims and accusers.

The administration has begun releasing files related to the criminal investigation into Epstein, the late American financier who was friends with Trump in the 1990s and early 2000s, to comply with a law passed by Congress last month.

Documents, photos, emails and other material released by the Justice Department and the House Oversight Committee feature Trump, former President Bill Clinton and numerous other VIPs. No one has been accused of wrongdoing by authorities in connection with Jeffrey Epstein.

Over fierce opposition from President Trump, Republicans and Democrats in Congress passed a disclosure law that would allow partial redactions to protect victims but require all documents to be made public by December 19th.

Previous announcements included extensive redactions that angered some Republicans and did little to defuse the scandal threatening the party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) slammed the delay on social media.

“The news on Christmas Eve about the ‘1 million more files’ dump only proves what we already know: President Trump is engaged in a massive cover-up,” Schumer said. “The questions Americans must answer are simple: What are they hiding and why? Justice delayed is justice denied. Open the file. Follow the law.”
