Dana Taylor:

America’s housing affordability crisis is leading to a surge in homelessness. And children under 18 saw the biggest increase, according to the latest tally from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Hello. Welcome to this excerpt from USA TODAY. I’m Dana Taylor. Today is Tuesday, December 30, 2025. According to the National Center for Homeless Education, there are approximately 1.4 million homeless students nationwide. USA TODAY breaking news reporter Christopher Cann joins me to discuss this growing number of students and the long-term impact on them. I’m so glad you’re here, Christopher.

Christopher Kang:

Yes, thank you for coming.

Dana Taylor:

You wrote that student homelessness increased by 104% between 2005 and 2023. I mentioned that the federal government tallies about 1.4 million students without housing, but I wrote that experts believe this is significantly lower. why is that?

Christopher Kang:

The main reason is that these students are simply difficult to track. Most of them are neither in shelters nor on the streets. They mostly live with other families in apartments or hotels. In the case of students, many do not tell their friends or teachers about their housing situation due to embarrassment or other reasons. And the same goes for parents who feel or fear that their children will be taken away from them when it comes to Child Protective Services. This is a story I’ve heard from many parents.

Dana Taylor:

Let’s take a look at why these students are considered a hidden group. We found that 70% of them doubled. What does that mean?

Christopher Kang:

As a result, across the United States, hundreds of thousands of homeless students live with other families, apartments, houses, and motels. In some cases, three or four families may live in one apartment. Currently, these students are considered unhoused under the McKinney-Bento Act, a federal law that guarantees homeless students admission and transportation to public schools. But other federal agencies, most importantly the Department of Housing and Urban Development, have a much more restrictive definition of homelessness, which disqualifies the vast majority of unhoused students from receiving assistance from agencies, such as rapid rehousing assistance.

Dana Taylor:

So, Christopher, how much does the federal government give each homeless student on average, and does that affect the problem?

Christopher Kang:

Although the federal government does not release exact statistics, including a breakdown by student, a recent analysis by the Learning Policy Institute showed that during the 2019/2020 school year, the McKinney-Vento allocation provided an average of $79 per homeless student. Now, after a huge influx of federal funds during the pandemic, those funds have essentially dried up. As researchers say, that’s not enough. This leaves many nonprofits, volunteer organizations, and the state itself to try to meet the need. I would also like to add that with the Trump administration dismantling the Department of Education, funding for the McKinney-Vento program is expected to be significantly reduced. Many homeless advocates and officials at the Department of Education are concerned about the future of the program.

Dana Taylor:

I would like to return to the point that housing insecurity can take a huge toll on both parents and students. Can you share some of the things you discovered there?

Christopher Kang:

Homelessness can have a devastating impact on a child’s education and future. Our research shows that homeless students have much higher rates of chronic absenteeism, meaning they miss significantly more time in class. They struggle with frequent school transfers and transportation. And as you can imagine, it’s much harder to concentrate and study when you live in a small space with other family members or spend time in your car, as some families do. On average, homeless students are about 20% less likely to graduate than non-homeless students.

Dana Taylor:

And what are the long-term implications for these students in terms of graduation rates?

Christopher Kang:

Researchers say lack of a GED or high school diploma is the biggest risk factor for becoming homeless as a young adult. This means that people who are homeless as children are much more likely to remain homeless as adults. And so did some of the parents I spoke to for this story.

Dana Taylor:

Can you tell me their story?

Christopher Kang:

Yeah. So I spoke to one of the families I talked to, the mother, Teroyah Jackson. She has lived in Washington DC all her life and now has five children, none of whom are currently housed in a DC shelter. But as a child, Teroya was also homeless with her mother, bouncing around shelter programs in Washington, D.C. He talked about the hardships of trying to maintain his own lifestyle and the pain of having to take his children to a shelter just like he did when he was a child.

Dana Taylor:

As you reported, it is often left to teachers or school staff to identify whether a student is housing insecure. Some school districts are building their own shelters and car shelters. Do they see these remedies as a sign of innovation, or as further evidence of the failure of the housing system?

Christopher Kang:

This means all sleeping areas, parking lots and other temporary shelters where homeless students and their families can sleep in their cars, are considered temporary measures. And as the number of homeless students continues to rise, they are deemed necessary to address the growing number of homeless students, especially since funding allocated from the federal government to regulate the problem has not increased at the same rate. So they’re just trying to fill a huge gap in funding and resources.

Dana Taylor:

And nonprofit organizations that appear to be struggling with growing support needs are filling the gap. Are we relying too much on volunteers and charities to deal with homelessness? What are we hearing there?

Christopher Kang:

Yes, these nonprofits and volunteers are a lot like states and school districts themselves, simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of children in need. They are trying to fill a huge gap in resources. And they do a great job, in some cases providing housing, school supplies, clothing, toys, and food for children. It’s not enough and they themselves will tell you that.

Dana Taylor:

I wanted to ask about a specific nonprofit organization you mentioned in your talk, Harvest House in Sarasota, Florida. Can you share some of their stories here?

Christopher Kang:

Yeah. That’s why Harvest House is a nonprofit organization in Sarasota that provides emergency housing assistance to families. And last year, the county commission cut funding to the county’s only nonprofit emergency family shelter. And in an interview with the Sarasota Herald Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network, Harvest House CEO Dan Miner spoke about the heartbreaking moment he had to turn away a family of six, including four children, who were living in the back of a U-Haul truck. He described children who were in shock and said that with their funding so drastically cut, they probably had to refer the families to other resources to find a place to stay, but couldn’t keep them on their own.

Dana Taylor:

Christopher, after talking with a mother, you mentioned Teroya Jackson, who became homeless after her daughter contracted lead poisoning and had to move out of her apartment. After taking a closer look at schools and nonprofits, what do you want us to understand about how this crisis is currently playing out in hotels, duplexes, and homeless shelters?

Christopher Kang:

I think the biggest thing for our listeners to keep in mind here is that just to bring awareness to this issue, most people don’t realize how many students in this country are crammed into hotels with other students, struggling to stay focused in school, and relying on taxis and volunteers to get them to class every day. And with this issue having such a dramatic impact on children’s futures, it is important that more people recognize the severity and prevalence of this crisis. And looking forward, I think it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with the federal McKinney vent program and whether the changes that the Trump administration is trying to implement will have a significant impact on it, as many are predicting.

Denver Nuggets star injured vs. Miami Heat

0

play

The Denver Nuggets are suddenly holding their breath and hoping for the best.

Star center and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered the injury on Monday, Dec. 29, when he awkwardly hyperextended his left knee in a game against the Miami Heat. Jokic limped off the court with an extreme limp and did not return until the second half.

“He knew right away that something was wrong,” Nuggets coach David Adelman told reporters after the game, which the Heat ultimately won 147-123. “This is part of the NBA. Anybody that gets hurt, it’s heartbreaking, especially for someone as special as him.”

The Nuggets initially said Jokic was not on the floor at the start of the second half and was questionable to return to the game.

The injury occurred late in the second quarter with six seconds left in the game when Jokic was defending in the paint. Nuggets forward Spencer Jones was pushed backwards as he shuffled, and Jones stepped on Jokic’s left foot as he kicked it, causing his left knee to buckle and hyperextend backwards.

Jokic lay on the court, clearly uncomfortable, clutching his knees. Trainers and medical staff tended to him, and he eventually got up and left the floor.

The immediate concern is ligament damage, which could cause Jokic to miss extended periods in a worst-case scenario. The Nuggets plan to evaluate Jokic through testing and imaging on Tuesday, Dec. 30, before providing a more complete update.

“Tomorrow we’re going to find out more about ourselves and move forward as a team,” Adelman said. “I’m more worried about him as a person and the disappointment of going through something like that. It’s unfortunate, but we’re hoping for the best. We have to stop to give our teammates the best support we can and respect them when they play.”

“It’s disappointing, but we’re hoping for the best.”

Jokic played MVP-caliber basketball for Denver this season, averaging 29.9 points, 12.4 rebounds and 11.1 assists in 31 games.

In the first half against Miami, Jokic had 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, eight assists and five rebounds.

With Jokic sidelined at least temporarily, the Nuggets now have four of their five starters injured. Aaron Gordon (hamstring), Cameron Johnson (knee) and Christian Braun (ankle) are also out.

Denver falls to 22-10 and is currently on a seven-game road trip. Their next game will be Wednesday, December 31st against the Toronto Raptors.

Judge dismisses lawsuit against TikTok streamer shot dead by federal agents

U.S. District Judge Fernando M. Holguin said the prosecution’s failure to turn over body camera footage in time undermined the defense’s ability to prepare for trial.

play

A federal judge has dismissed charges against a Los Angeles-based TikTok creator who was accused of assaulting a police officer before he was shot and killed by federal agents during an immigration raid, according to court records.

Carlitos Ricardo Parias, 44, a TikTok streamer who documents immigration enforcement operations around Los Angeles, has been charged with assault on a federal officer in connection with the Oct. 21 confrontation, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. He was indicted by a grand jury and scheduled for trial on December 30th.

Prosecutors accused Parias, a Mexican national living in South Los Angeles, of ramming into a law enforcement vehicle while “attempting to drive away during an immigration arrest.” Prosecutors said federal agents fired shots during the incident, which struck Parias and injured a deputy sheriff.

U.S. District Judge Fernando M. Holguin dismissed the case with prejudice on December 27. That means prosecutors cannot bring the same charges against Palias again.

The judge cited constitutional violations in his ruling, saying Parias was deprived of access to a lawyer while in custody.

Holguin also said the government has not met deadlines for discovery, including releasing body camera footage from the shooting. The video, taken on a camera worn by the police officer who shot Parias, was released on December 10, five days after the deadline.

“By delaying production of the body camera footage, the government eliminated the possibility that the defense would review the footage with Mr. Parias,” Holguin wrote. “And with each passing day, the ability of defense attorneys to meet with their clients and prepare for trial was further impaired, resulting in even greater prejudice against defendants.”

Although the charges against him were dismissed, Parias may remain in custody as his immigration case progresses. Federal authorities say he resides in the United States without legal permission.

In a statement to CBS News, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles said it “strongly” disagrees with the ruling and will consider options for appeal.

Federal agents surveilled TikTok streamer’s neighborhood before arrest

According to the criminal complaint, federal agents conducted surveillance in Palias’ neighborhood on the morning of October 21 and saw her leave her home. Prosecutors said Parias was “the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Immigration Administration and had previously evaded arrest.”

Prosecutors said Parias had no “reasonable means of escape” after he got into his car and the agents followed him and forced him into his car. Parias then drove the car back and forth, hitting two law enforcement vehicles, according to the complaint.

“Palias still refused to comply with arrest and then…more aggressively advanced toward a law enforcement vehicle,” prosecutors alleged. “Palias’ aggressive driving escalated and the vehicle’s tires apparently spun, creating a large volume of smoke around (the vehicle).”

Prosecutors said Parias refused to comply with the agents’ commands, so the agents tried to break into the driver’s side window of Parias’ car. During the incident, agents opened fire, wounding Parias. Prosecutors added that a deputy U.S. marshal who assisted in the arrest suffered minor injuries from a ricochet.

Newly released body camera footage shows the moment before the shooting

New body camera footage obtained by the Los Angeles Times of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who shot Pallias has raised questions about the shooting, the newspaper reported.

The Times said the footage showed the agent holding a gun in one hand and using the other to pry open the passenger-side window of Parias’ car. The agent then ordered Parias to turn off the car’s engine.

Parias was seen raising his hands and asking investigators why he was being held, the newspaper said. After the agent made multiple attempts to open the passenger side door of Parias’ car, he held a gun in his left hand and fired.

The Times reported that Parias’ car did not appear to be moving at the time, and that other investigators could be seen in the video near the driver’s side door.

Latest shootings involving ICE agents

The Trump administration is ramping up immigration enforcement across the United States as part of an effort to deport record numbers. Federal immigration raids and deportations have sparked backlash and protests in dozens of states.

On Dec. 24, federal authorities announced that ICE agents fired into a vehicle during a raid in Maryland, injuring two people.

In September, ICE agents shot and killed a man they tried to run over with their car, but security and body camera footage raised questions about the circumstances.

A cutscene from Stranger Things? Star debunks rumors during petition

0

play

Stranger Things star Clark is giving fans a lesson on online misinformation.

Randy Havens, who plays teacher Scott Clark on the hit Netflix series, took to Instagram to debunk an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that the latest season was drastically cut.

“There are no Snyder secrets on the show,” Havens wrote on his Instagram Story. “Don’t believe everything random people say on the internet.”

The “Snyder Cut” refers to a 2017 campaign that called for Warner Bros. to release a director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. After the filmmaker left the project and was replaced by director Joss Whedon, the theatrical version ended up looking very different from Snyder’s original vision. A successful online petition pressured Warner Bros. to release the so-called “Snyder Cut,” dubbed “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” on HBO Max in 2021.

But in that case, there was documented evidence of chaos behind the scenes at Justice League. In the case of Stranger Things, there is no evidence to support claims that have been circulating on social media in recent days that key scenes and storylines were cut from the new season in a way that affected the overall quality of the storytelling.

Despite this, a Change.org petition calling for the release of “unseen footage” from Season 5 of “Stranger Things” has garnered nearly 300,000 signatures, claiming that “many scenes of Volume 2 and our beloved characters must have been cut.”

One piece of evidence that fans have pointed to is the fact that some of the new episodes were previously listed on IMDb with longer runtimes, but those longer runtimes were never confirmed to be accurate in the first place. In many other cases, fans pointed out scenes they didn’t like in new episodes and simply argued that this must mean there was a missing scene that would make these plot beats meaningful.

The conspiracy ultimately stemmed from the fact that some fans were dissatisfied with the latest episode of Stranger Things, claiming it didn’t move the story forward in a satisfying way for the upcoming series finale.

The seventh episode of Season 5, “The Bridge,” was especially controversial because it featured Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) coming out as gay. Some fans felt that the scene where Will comes out of the closet in front of all of the show’s main characters at the same time was awkwardly written. On IMDb, “The Bridge” currently has a score of 5.5 out of 10, making it the lowest-rated episode in the series’ history, although it is unclear whether the homophobic backlash affected the score.

“The Bridge” is part of the second batch of episodes in the final season of “Stranger Things,” which premiered on Christmas Day after the first four episodes were released the day before Thanksgiving. This season was highly anticipated after a wait of more than three years and a fourth season that was generally well-received by critics and fans alike.

All eyes are now on the final episode of the Stranger Things series, with questions swirling whether creators Matt and Ross Duffer will be able to land the plane or whether there will be another Game of Thrones-ending backlash. The final episode will be released on Netflix on New Year’s Eve.

Jazz band cancels New Year’s Eve performance at Trump Kennedy Center

The Cookers’ last-minute cancellation follows a controversial Dec. 18 decision to change the name of the music, arts and cultural venue to one that includes President Donald Trump’s name.

play

A prominent jazz band has canceled its New Year’s Eve performance at the Trump Kennedy Center due to its renaming.

The Cookers did not give a reason, but the band said the decision on Monday, December 29, “came together very quickly.”

“Jazz was born of struggle and a relentless insistence on freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and the full freedom of the human voice,” the band said on its website. “Some of us have been making this music for decades, and that history still shapes us. We’re not taking our eyes off the audience, and when we return to the bandstand, we want the venue to be the best possible celebration of the music and the presence of everyone there.”

The band went on to say that their hope is that “this moment leaves room for reflection, not outrage.”

“To those of you who are disappointed or upset, we understand your grief and share your grief,” they said. “We remain committed to playing music that reaches across departments, rather than deepening them.”

This last-minute cancellation follows the Kennedy Center Board of Directors’ controversial Dec. 18 decision to change the name of the music, arts, and cultural institution to the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center.

Jazz musician Chuck Redd canceled his Christmas Eve performance in protest of the name change.

Following Redd’s decision, Trump Kennedy Center Director Richard Grenell sought $1 million in damages for a “political stunt” that “caused us great harm,” according to a Dec. 26 letter to Redd obtained by USA TODAY.

A Kennedy Center spokesperson doubled down on Red’s criticism in a Dec. 29 statement to USA TODAY, saying, “Artists who cancel shows at the Trump Kennedy Center because of political differences have no courage or principle. They are selfish and intolerant.”

“Art is a shared cultural experience that is meant to unite rather than exclude,” the statement continued. “The Trump Kennedy Center is a truly bipartisan institution that welcomes artists and patrons of all backgrounds. Great art transcends politics, and America’s cultural center remains committed to delivering popular programming that inspires and resonates with all audiences.”

In addition to the Reds and Cookers cancellations, the New York Times reported that New York dance company Doug Varone and the Dancers is canceling two performances in April.

Vallone, who heads the company, said in an email to the Times that this meant a loss of $40,000, calling it “economically devastating but morally refreshing.”

What Does a Home Warranty Cover? 2026 Guide

0

A home warranty covers the most important systems and appliances in your home. If your HVAC system, refrigerator, dryer, etc. stop working, your home warranty will cover the cost of repair or replacement. Here are the most common household items covered by the best home warranty providers.

What does a home warranty cover?

Home warranties are designed to protect homeowners from unexpected repair costs by covering major systems and appliances in the home. The most important items covered under a home warranty are “major systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roof, water heater,” says Austin Glanser, co-owner of 717 Home Buyers and an experienced home flipper who completes 20 to 30 homes a year.

Home system coverage

A system plan typically includes important components to keep your home running smoothly, such as:

  • Heating and Air Conditioning System (HVAC): Often includes furnaces, air conditioning equipment, and ductwork.
  • Piping system: Pipes, faucets, and possibly a sump pump (if not, a sump pump can usually be added as additional coverage). Plumbing system coverage repairs damage caused by leaks, breaks, and outages. Equipment such as shower heads and faucets may not be included.
  • Electrical system: This often includes wiring, panels, standard fixtures, and circuit breakers, but may exclude meter boxes, special wiring (computer, alarm, or security wiring), and generators. These exclusions may be offered as add-ons.
  • Water heater: Your water heater may be covered by your system warranty, it may be an add-on, or it may be included in your appliance plan.

Coverage for home appliances

The most common appliances included in home warranty plans are:

  • refrigerator
  • dishwasher
  • oven, cooktop, range
  • washer and dryer
  • built-in microwave

This list includes the most basic home appliances, but more comprehensive providers like American Home Shield often include even more home appliances, such as:

  • ceiling fan, attic fan, exhaust fan
  • doorbell
  • Instant hot/cold water dispenser
  • Garbage disposal
  • garage door opener
  • jet bath

add on

Some home warranty companies offer a short list of add-ons, while others, like Liberty Home Guard, offer more than 40 options. Some of the most common add-ons include:

  • Pool and spa facilities
  • Limited roof leakage
  • well pump
  • drain pump
  • central vacuum
  • purification system
  • guest unit
  • wine cooler
  • freestanding ice maker
  • lawn sprinkler system

Hint: Roof leak coverage is one of the most common add-ons, and one you shouldn’t overlook. “It’s very important to read the fine print,” says Glanser. “Some of these warranties exclude the roof.” If you have the option, add it to your warranty plan.

Additional benefits

Repair coverage is the most obvious benefit of a home warranty, but many providers also offer additional benefits for homeowners, including:

  • home appliance discounts
  • 24/7 customer service for emergencies
  • Access to a network of service professionals
  • Semi-annual HVAC tune-up and maintenance
  • Transferable coverage for home sales
  • Cleaning the dryer vent
  • Smart home installation
  • Rekey service

Products not covered by home warranty

A home warranty can save you thousands of dollars in repairs, but it doesn’t cover everything. Understanding what is excluded is just as important, if not more important, than knowing what is included.

Common exclusions include:

  • Structural components: Foundations, walls, ceilings, and floors are usually not covered.
  • Windows, doors, screens: These are covered under home maintenance, not system or appliance coverage.
  • Outdoor features: Fences, landscaping, sprinklers, and separate structures such as sheds and garages are typically excluded unless specifically included as an add-on.
  • Appearance issues: Paint, trim, and aesthetic upgrades are not part of the home warranty.
  • Pre-existing conditions or improper installation: Your claim may be denied if the system or appliance was already broken or was not installed correctly before coverage began.

Types of home warranty plans

Home warranty plans cover home systems, appliances, or both.

  • System planning: A system plan covers all the important systems in your home, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Appliance plan: With an appliance plan, all major appliances in your home are protected. These plans often include kitchen appliances, washing machines, and other appliances such as water heaters and garage door openers.
  • Combination plan: The best home warranty plans are often those that include both home systems and appliances. Although more expensive than system or appliance-only plans, these comprehensive coverage plans offer the most protection.

Hint: If your protection plan doesn’t cover everything you need, you can always expand your coverage with add-ons.

If it can’t be repaired, can I replace it under my home warranty?

Home warranties cover the cost of repairing or replacing systems and appliances, so if they can’t be repaired, you might be able to buy a new furnace. However, please note the following:

  • Exchange restrictions may apply. Home warranty companies often limit coverage to a certain amount. Coverage applies to both individual items and contract terms, so if your new air conditioner costs more than that amount, you’ll have to pay the difference.
  • You are eligible to purchase only comparable models. The replacement unit is similar to the one you had before, so you don’t have to expect any upgrades.
  • Installation and disposal may not be included if: The details are important, and some providers may only cover the cost of the system or appliance, not labor or disposal fees.

FAQ

Does the home warranty cover complete replacement?

If your system or appliance breaks down due to normal wear and tear and requires a complete replacement, your home warranty will cover the cost. However, home warranties have limits, so if the replacement cost exceeds those limits, you may have to pay the difference.

Does warranty mean free replacement?

Warranty does not automatically mean free replacement. A home warranty will cover the cost of repairing damage and may replace systems and appliances if necessary.

Does the home warranty cover the roof?

Many home warranty companies offer limited coverage for roof leaks, but they don’t cover the entire roof like insurance. This coverage is included in your plan or can be purchased as an add-on.

Donald Trump says he will announce Jerome Powell’s successor in January

0

play

President Donald Trump said he plans to announce his choice to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in January, a long-awaited moment for financial institutions that the president has attacked as he pushes to cut interest rates to boost economic activity.

Powell’s term expires in May, but President Trump has been eager to see him step down and has repeatedly criticized the central bank’s leadership.

President Trump met with the Israeli prime minister at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida on December 29, and said, “I want to fire him, but he’s getting close,” as his term ends.

The Fed has cut interest rates three times this year, but President Trump said the latest rate cut on Dec. 10 “could be twice that.”

President Trump reacted to the interest rate cut during a roundtable discussion with business leaders, saying, “The Fed chairman is stubborn.” “You know, you’re fighting that…Interest rates are going down, but not by much in his case. What he did was a pretty small number that could probably double, at least double.”

Generally, the Fed lowers interest rates to stimulate a struggling economy and job market. In order to reduce inflation or prevent price increases, interest rates are raised or kept high for a long period of time.

President Trump selected Powell as Fed chair in 2017 during his first term, but since taking office, the president has repeatedly criticized the Fed chair for being “too slow,” threatened to file a lawsuit, and never met with Powell in person while touring the Fed’s building renovations.

The Fed lowered its benchmark federal funds rate by another quarter of a point this month to a range of 3.5% to 3.75% in an effort to stimulate the labor market. But affordability remains a concern for many Americans. Lower borrowing costs could lead to higher spending, putting upward pressure on prices, a difficult balancing act for the Fed.

Israel breaks tradition and awards President Trump with award

0

play

WASHINGTON – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country plans to award President Donald Trump the Israel Prize, breaking with tradition of honoring non-Israelis and marking the first time the annual award has been presented to the president of another country.

Prime Minister Netanyahu announced President Trump as the recipient of the Israel Prize, the state of Israel’s highest civilian honor for 72 years, shortly after the two leaders met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

The move comes after President Trump was removed as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in October, despite actively lobbying for the prestigious award.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that Trump had “broken so many conventions” and said that Israel had “decided to break convention” by awarding Trump the Israel Prize. Prime Minister Netanyahu cited President Trump’s “tremendous contributions to Israel and the Jewish people,” and said, “In the nearly 80 years of our country, we have never awarded the medal to a non-Israel.”

Addressing reporters alongside President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “This is a very fitting occasion, and I would of course be honored if you would take this opportunity to visit Israel.” “This reflects the overwhelming feeling of Israelis from all walks of life. They are grateful for what you have done to support Israel and support our common fight against terrorists and those who seek to destroy civilization.”

Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kish, who administers the Israel Prize, informed President Trump by phone of his selection as the recipient of the award during a December 29 lunch meeting with President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and other U.S. and Israeli officials.

“For the first time in the history of the state of Israel, the Israel Prize will be presented to President Trump!” Kish said in a post to X, accompanied by a video breaking the news to Trump.

President Trump, a close ally of Prime Minister Netanyahu and a supporter of Israel, called the award “truly amazing and very grateful.”

Israel Prize winners must be Israeli citizens or residents of the country for the past three years prior to nomination, but the award has exceptions for individuals who have made “special contributions to the Jewish people,” according to the Jerusalem Post.

Trump’s international allies are increasingly turning to awards and prizes that glorify the U.S. president. On December 5, FIFA President Gianni Infantino held the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the United States, and presented President Trump with the first FIFA Peace Prize.

In October, President Trump helped broker a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas. The first phase included the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

But continued violence in Gaza threatens the fragile ceasefire, with both sides accusing the other of violating the agreement.

JonBenét Ramsey’s father says ‘new evidence’ is a source of optimism

0

play

Nearly 30 years after 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in Boulder, Colorado, police say in their annual report that “new evidence” is being considered in the case.

Ramsey, a handsome Atlanta-born boy, was reported missing from his home in Boulder on December 26, 1996, and was later found strangled to death. No one has been charged in connection with her death.

Her death has been the subject of intense speculation, decades of documentaries, true story podcasts and conspiracy theories, and investigators provide annual updates on her case.

Part of the “New Interview” case update

“Over the past year, detectives have conducted multiple new interviews and re-interviewed individuals based on information received. We have also collected new evidence and tested other evidence multiple times to develop new leads,” Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfern said in a Dec. 12 video.

He said this case has renewed hope for a solution, especially with advances in technology related to DNA testing.

Police have not said what the new evidence contains or who has been questioned or re-interviewed in the case.

“It is not too late for anyone with knowledge of this horrific crime to come forward and we encourage those responsible for this murder to contact us,” Ms Redfern said.

Boulder police say anyone with information should contact BouldersMostWanted@bouldercolorado.gov or the police tip line at 303-441-1974.

Father says new details are cause for optimism

John Ramsey appeared on NewsNation’s “Banfield” and said he was optimistic that new details could lead to the identification of his daughter’s killer.

“It’s encouraging,” he told the outlet. “The key thing that’s really progressing is that we’ve got new leadership in there. It hasn’t been very good for 25, 6 years. And now, knowing Chief (Stephen) Redfern from the outside, I’ve met him three or four times. I’m impressed with him. I think he’s a man of integrity and integrity.”

Ramsey also said he expects authorities to partner with Osram Labs, an investigative genetic analysis company that recently assisted in the Brian Koberger investigation in Idaho. Koberger pleaded guilty to a series of murders at the University of Idaho.

Ramsey also noted that police have not disclosed who has been re-interrogated or what new evidence is being considered.

Timeline of the JonBenét Ramsey incident

The day after Christmas in 1996, police were called to the Ramsey home, where JonBenét’s mother, Patsy, told officers she had found a note saying her daughter had been kidnapped.

The letter demanded $118,000 and told the Ramseys not to call the police.

Later that day, after a massive search, JonBenet’s body was discovered in an empty room in the Ramsey home’s basement. She had duct tape over her mouth and neck. Her cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to strangulation. JonBenet’s death was ruled a homicide, according to police records.

Three days later, the girl’s body was flown to Atlanta and buried at St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia, along with her half-sister, who died in a car accident in 1992.

Investigators later said the ransom note appeared to have been written inside the home. A handwriting test ruled out her father, John Ramsay, as the author, but Patsy was not released. JonBenet’s parents remained suspects.

The family returned to Atlanta, where JonBenét’s older brother Burke, who was 9 years old at the time of her death, was questioned by authorities.

The decades that followed were chaotic, with the resignation of a detective, a grand jury investigation and indictment, missing DNA evidence, and a teacher’s confession that later turned out to be false.

conspiracy surrounding the incident

In the days after the killing, police said they spoke regularly about rumors about the Ramsey family and were cooperating with the investigation. Police assured residents that her death appeared to be an isolated incident and that other children were not at risk.

“There’s been a lot of talk and speculation about who killed JonBenét. I know this area will be explored in more detail in future questions. Let me offer one perspective on this issue. “Hype has never solved crime. Solving crimes requires diligent, careful police work, and that’s exactly what the Boulder Police Department strives to do,” Boulder Police Department Chief Thomas G. Covey said in a televised news conference on January 9. 1997.

The Ramseys have filed numerous lawsuits against television stations and documentary production companies that covered JonBenét’s case, many of which brand the Ramseys as liars and responsible for her death.

Britney Spears’ Instagram post invites families to have a Christmas without her

0

Britney Spears seems to be reacting to her family celebrating Christmas without her.

Amid a flood of posts, the pop star apparently posted a photo of a Christmas tree on Instagram on Sunday, December 28th, with a sarcastic and harsh caption. “A late Christmas to my beautiful family who have never disrespected me, never hurt me, never done anything that is completely unacceptable, never caused me incredible trauma that cannot be repaired,” she wrote. “To my dear and innocent family…I am so sorry that I have been so busy this Christmas, but I will definitely show up and surprise you soon.”

On Christmas Day, Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears posted a photo of herself and husband Jamie Watson on Instagram. Daughters – Maddie Brian (17 years old) and Ivy (7 years old). mother, Lynn Spears; and Sean Preston Federline, Britney Spears’ eldest son. Spears has sons Sean Preston and Jayden James Preston with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Kevin Federline breaks his silence on ‘Britney Freedom’ movement

Kevin Federline speaks with USA TODAY’s Ralphie Aversa about his memoir, “You Thought You Knew,” which details his relationship with Britney Spears.

“I can’t wait… Hello beautiful Ivy (sic)… I just want to hug you, my love… Godspeed, friend,” Britney, 44, added about Jamie Lynn’s second daughter.

USA TODAY has reached out to Jamie Lynn’s representative for comment.

Britney Spears’ relationship with her family has been strained for years, amid a 14-year conservatorship initiated by her father, Jamie Spears. Although the conservatorship ended in 2021, Britney publicly criticized her family for their involvement in and failure to contribute to the end of the conservatorship.

Jamie Lynn, 34, denies the accusations, but the sisters are at loggerheads over the issue. In 2022, after Jamie Lynn Spears gave an interview in which she talked about conservatorship while promoting her memoir, Britney Spears responded, claiming that her sister was selling her book “at my expense.” Jamie Lynn Spears quickly responded with a comment echoed in her book that her sister was “in danger” for claiming she was being abused.

“My aunt’s vague and disparaging posts have made it increasingly difficult to explain to my eldest daughter why our family continues to receive death threats,” Jamie Lynn said at the time.

When is Three Kings Day?Why Christmas ends on January 6th?

0

play

Three Kings Day, also known as Epiphany, will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, and is an important day for millions of Christian and Catholic families in Europe, Spain, and Latin America. For many Hispanic communities in the United States, this day marks the official end of Christmas, keeping traditions alive from the gifts to the table.

That’s important now because, unlike the commercial calendar, religious Christmas doesn’t end on December 25th. From January 25th to 6th, the 12 days of Christmas will pass, culminating in the Day of the Three Kings. It particularly affects families with children, Catholic communities, and Latino businesses preparing for specific celebrations or sales.

When and why will Three Kings Day be celebrated in 2026?

Three Kings Day is for many associated with the 12 days of Christmas, which begin on December 25th and culminate with the Feast of the Epiphany, and is celebrated on January 6th.

The name comes from the Greek inspirationwhich means the visible manifestation or revelation of divinity before man. That idea, that God makes himself present in the world, remains the theological axis that gives meaning to the Day of the Three Kings to this day.

For those who live through the seasons as a cycle, it is the “final point” before completely returning to normal life.

But not everyone thinks the same way. Some traditions understand Christmas as one day, others as 12 days, and others extend it to the menorah, which is usually celebrated on February 2nd and commemorates the dedication of Jesus in the Temple.

Why is Three Kings Day always celebrated on January 6th?

Three Kings Day falls on January 6 each year because it is associated with the Feast of the Epiphany, an ancient Christian tradition that commemorates the manifestation of Jesus Christ into the world. In the liturgical calendar, January 6th is set aside to commemorate the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus, which, according to tradition, took place 12 days after Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25th.

According to historical records, the first celebration took place several centuries ago. According to ancient sources, it dates back to the 4th century AD. In C, Epiphany was a widespread commemoration among Christian communities. Also earlier in the second century, the theologian Clement of Alexandria recorded that a group of Syrian Gnostic Christians known as the Basilidians performed the baptism of Christ in January. Decades later, in 361, Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus recorded that Christians called that January celebration Epiphany.

Based on this count, the so-called 12 days of Christmas were born, starting on Christmas Day and ending on January 6th. Therefore, for many Christians, Three Kings Day not only reminds us of our veneration of the Magi, but also marks the official end of the Christmas season.

How is Three Kings Day perceived in the U.S. Latino community?

For many Hispanic families, gifts arrive in the early morning hours of January 6th, rather than December 25th. On the night of the 5th, the children place their shoes near a tree or manger and wait for the visit of the Three Wise Men.

The next day, the center of the celebration is the family table. Share hot chocolate, coffee, and Rosca de Reyes among several generations. For many immigrants, it’s a way to connect their children to their cultural roots.

Is it a religious holiday?

yes. Three Kings Day is a Christian and Catholic holiday widely celebrated in Europe, Spain, and Latin America. Although it is not a federal holiday in the United States, it has strong cultural roots in the Hispanic community.

Is it a holiday in America?

No, Three Kings Day is not a federal holiday, but it is an important cultural and religious day for the Latinx and Catholic communities. Many celebrations take place on the night of the 5th or the nearest weekend, as schools and workplaces operate as usual.

President Trump says pardon for Prime Minister Netanyahu is ‘close’, Herzog denies claim

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he was informed by Israeli President Isaac Herzog of plans to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid the Israeli prime minister’s lengthy corruption trial, a claim Herzog’s office quickly denied.

President Trump addressed reporters alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu on December 29, before meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. “I’ve talked to the president, and he says plans are moving forward.”

“He’s a wartime hero and a prime minister. Why not pardon him?” Trump said. “I think it’s very difficult not to do that.”

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has been on trial since 2020 on three separate charges, including one for allegedly accepting gifts of about 700,000 shekels (about $211,832) from a businessman. Prime Minister Netanyahu has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

However, Israel’s presidential office denied that any decision had been taken and insisted that Herzog and Trump had not spoken in the weeks since Netanyahu formally requested a pardon on November 30 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

“There have been no conversations between President Herzog and President Trump since the clemency request was filed,” Herzog’s office said in a statement.

“A few weeks ago, a conversation took place between President Herzog and a representative of President Trump in which he was asked about the letter of the President of the United States,” the statement continued, referring to a November 12 letter from President Trump to Herzog urging him to consider pardoning Prime Minister Netanyahu.

“During that conversation, an explanation was given of the current stage of the request and that any decisions regarding this matter would be made according to established procedures. This was communicated to President Trump’s representatives, as President Herzog has publicly stated in Israel,” the statement said.

President Trump has repeatedly called for a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close ally, including in a speech to Israel’s parliament in October during a visit to Israel to commemorate the completion of the first phase of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

“While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli judicial system and its requirements, I believe this ‘case’ against Mr. Bibi, who has fought alongside me for many years, including against Israel’s very powerful enemy, Iran, is a political and unwarranted prosecution,” Trump wrote in a Nov. 12 letter to Herzog.

President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu showered each other with words of praise before the Mar-a-Lago meeting began. Trump touted the U.S. ordering airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June and his administration’s efforts to secure a Gaza peace deal that includes the return of Israeli hostages.

“I have never had a friend like President Trump in the White House. Not even close,” Netanyahu said. “I think Israel is extremely blessed to have President Trump leading the United States.”

Ranking of the 10 safest (and most dangerous) US cities to live in in 2025

0

Crime rates are considered the best way to determine whether a city is safe, but there has been a recent movement to expand the definition of safe.

play

Mayor Frank Picozzi wasn’t surprised when he learned that Warwick, Rhode Island, topped the list of America’s safest cities.

This charming coastal city has taken advantage of federal funds distributed during the coronavirus pandemic to expand its fleet of fire trucks and police vehicles. This is part of a long-standing effort to improve public safety, which Picozzi believes has contributed to the city’s rise in rankings.

“There used to be areas in the city that were like rocky neighborhoods, but with constant police activity and economic development, that’s no longer the case,” Picozzi said. “People are proud of this city.”

The analysis WalletHub published in October doesn’t just take into account crime data, which is flawed and difficult to compare across cities. It also assesses how safe residents are from natural disasters such as tornadoes, wildfires, and hurricanes. Economic security is also measured by factors such as the unemployment rate and the percentage of people living in poverty without health insurance.

“Too many people don’t take this into account when evaluating security,” says Chip Lupo, writer and analyst at WalletHub.

But trying to determine where Americans are safest is not an exact science. As efforts are made to find new ways to measure public safety, some experts warn that assessing public safety and personal safety may require more nuance.

What are the top 10 safest cities?

According to WalletHub, the top 10 safest cities in the United States are:

  1. Warwick, Rhode Island
  2. Overland Park, Kansas
  3. Burlington, Vermont
  4. Juneau, Alaska
  5. Yonkers, New York
  6. Casper, Wyoming
  7. South Burlington, Vermont
  8. Columbia, Maryland
  9. Lewiston, Maine
  10. Salem, Oregon

What are the top 10 most dangerous cities?

According to WalletHub, the top 10 most dangerous cities in the country (or least safe of the 182 cities ranked) are:

  1. new orleans
  2. memphis tennessee
  3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  4. detroit
  5. baltimore
  6. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  7. houston
  8. San Bernardino, California
  9. philadelphia
  10. cleveland

How did WalletHub go about finding America’s safest cities?

Lupo said WalletHub evaluated the 150 most populous cities in the country and at least two of the most populous cities in each state based on 41 weighted metrics related to safety. Each city was given a score out of 100. Factors related to home and community safety were given the highest weight, including crime, traffic fatalities, number of law enforcement personnel, and perceptions of safety.

While most cities in the top 10 rank highly in all three categories, some remain at high risk of extreme weather and financial distress. For example, Overland Park, Kansas, and Yonkers, New York ranked 118th in natural disaster risk and financial security, respectively.

Comparing crime data can be difficult

Crime rates are often used as the main way to accurately determine where Americans are safest, but that data is “very incomplete,” said Adam Gelb, president and CEO of the Council on Criminal Justice.

Comparing cities by city doesn’t explain the fact that some areas have much more crime than others. Gelb also said pitting cities with vastly different populations against each other can be somewhat unfair, noting that the FBI even warns against using crime data to compare jurisdictions.

For example, Memphis is often reprimanded for having the worst crime rate in the country, but that title was actually held by Lakeside, Colorado in 2024, according to data submitted to the FBI.

However, Lakeside’s estimated population is only 16 people. Among the 40 most populous cities in the country, Memphis had the highest overall crime rate.

New factors, changing views on public safety

Many in the criminal justice community try to define public safety by the presence of health and well-being indicators, not just the absence of crime, Gelb said.

On December 18, advocacy group Campaign Zero launched an interactive platform that compares data on “housing affordability, access to health care, economic security, access to education, heart disease, and crime” in 11 major cities, with the aim of redefining public safety and how it is measured.

Local leaders, including the city of St. Paul, Minnesota, are launching similar efforts. The researchers interviewed young people and developed “safety indicators, such as playing outside and riding the train, and corresponding indicators that St. Paul can use to measure each indicator, such as the number of young people using public spaces.” (St. Paul ranks 47th on WalletHub’s list of safest cities.)

Researchers at the University of California conducted a similar project, asking residents of Oakland, which is ranked 169th on WalletHub, how they know if their neighborhood is safe, and created about 600 “direct indicators” of neighborhood safety.

Which city is the safest? It depends on who you ask.

Depending on what safety indicators are considered when comparing regions, dramatically different results can occur.

Ranked 84th by WalletHub, San Jose, California was found to be the safest city in the country in a recent study by SmartAsset. The company ranked the 50 most populous cities based on variables such as violent crime rate, property crime rate, and vehicle fatality rate.

Meanwhile, U.S. News & World Report found that Johns Creek, Georgia, is the safest place to live, based on homicide and property crime rates per 100,000 people reported to the FBI.

At the other end of the spectrum, Memphis is considered the most dangerous city in the country in all three rankings, with the National Guard deployed to curb crime.

Chris Knoller, police chief in Pueblo, Colorado, pointed out that his city is listed among the 10 most dangerous by U.S. News & World Report but is not included in a similar list compiled by Newsweek. Both are based on FBI data.

While Knoller said he may not be “satisfied” with the crime situation in Pueblo, he told the Pueblo Chieftain, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the department has done a “tremendous job” in reducing crime.

“I can name about 30 cities that no one would want to be in right now that are much more dangerous than Pueblo,” Noller said.

Safety ranking remains controversial

Gelb said such a list could be a great way to motivate local officials to enact better public safety plans. No one wants to be at the bottom, he said.

“It’s critical that cities understand their situation,” he says. “Even if rankings are not an accurate measure of performance.”

But for people trying to decide where to live, work and play, rankings of city-level data, especially when it comes to crime, aren’t detailed enough to provide real insight, said Alec Brownlow, a professor at DePaul University who studies the geographies of fear, safety and security in urban landscapes. “I think the rankings are bogus,” he said.

Ultimately, Brownlow said, no single analysis can capture all potential threats to human safety.

How much child tax credit will I get back?

play

If you’re a parent or guardian, filing taxes can be much more complicated than if you’re an individual. The good news is that depending on your income level, you may be eligible for tax credits and credits not available to single filers.

Here’s what you need to know about the child tax credit. The Child Tax Credit is a reliable way to save money for eligible taxpayers.

For children under 17, the maximum tax credit per eligible child is $2,200. For the refundable portion of the credit (or additional child tax credit), you can receive up to $1,700 per qualifying child.

Who is eligible for the Child Tax Credit?

There are several requirements to qualify. First, you must be a parent or guardian filing your 2025 taxes.

To qualify, children and dependents must also have a valid Social Security number for employment in the United States, according to the IRS. You must be under 17 years of age at the end of the year. Other requirements include:

  • Must be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, half-brother, half-sister, half-sibling, or descendant (niece, nephew, grandchild, etc.).
  • You cannot exceed half of your own financial support during a tax year.
  • They must have lived with you for more than half of the tax year.
  • You must properly declare them as dependents on your tax return.
  • You cannot file a joint return with your spouse in a tax year. You also cannot file a return solely to claim a refund of income taxes withheld or estimated tax payments.
  • They must be a U.S. citizen, citizen, or resident.

How much is the child tax credit worth?

  • If a parent or guardian’s gross income exceeds $200,000 if filing individually or $400,000 if filing jointly with a spouse, the child tax credit and additional tax credits are reduced by up to $2,200.
  • If you owe little or no federal income taxes, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit of up to $1,700 per qualifying child, depending on your income. However, you must earn at least $2,500 to qualify for ACTC.

How do I claim the child tax credit?

To receive the child tax credit, you must list your children and other dependents on your U.S. individual income tax return, Form 1040. You must also complete Schedule 8812, which itemizes credits for eligible children and other dependents.

President Trump says Gaza peace plan cannot move forward unless Hamas disarms

The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was aimed at encouraging progress on phase two of the Gaza peace agreement.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump acknowledged that the next phase of the Gaza peace plan will require the militant group Hamas to lay down its arms, but said in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that rebuilding the Palestinian enclave could begin sooner.

The talks were aimed at accelerating progress on the second phase of a deal to end the war secured by the administration three months ago, as progress on a deal to disarm Hamas remains stalled.

“We need to be disarmed,” President Trump told reporters from his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, on December 29. Regarding the implementation of the second phase, President Trump said, “We need to disarm Hamas, or we need to disarm it very quickly.”

The US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas went into effect in October, and the first phase included the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The remains of all living Israeli hostages and all but Ran Gviri, who was believed to be dead, were returned. Prior to his meeting with President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu met with Gviri’s parents in Florida.

But moving to the next stage of the 20-point plan has proven difficult, with both sides accusing the other of violating the agreement.

The plan ultimately calls for the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and a new leadership of the Gaza Strip. The United States had hoped that approval of the plan by the U.N. Security Council in November would pave the way for the creation of an International Stabilization Force to provide security for Gaza and a peace commission to oversee the transitional government, although the composition of both remains under discussion.

President Trump said earlier this month that he aims to announce in January which world leaders will serve on the board.

He said he expects Florida’s rebuilding to “begin quickly” and that hygiene efforts have begun.

Deadlocks over other aspects of the deal threaten to undermine Trump’s biggest foreign policy achievement since he returned to office. Trump celebrated the accomplishment during a trip to the Middle East in October, addressing the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and holding a signing ceremony in Egypt.

The two-year conflict, which began with a surprise Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has ebbed and flowed since a cease-fire eased fighting and a peace deal, with Israel carrying out additional attacks and killing hundreds of Palestinians, Gaza health officials said. The death of two Israeli soldiers, who the government said were killed by Hamas militants, also threatens to collapse the deal.

President Trump is ending 2025 with two high-profile diplomatic moves aimed at addressing the two biggest conflicts during his second term. The day before his meeting with Netanyahu, President Trump welcomed Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to Mar-a-Lago and spoke by phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to work on a peace plan for Ukraine.

DEI fraud? Trump administration launches investigation

The Trump administration is investigating the diversity efforts of major companies under the False Claims Act, a federal law that the Justice Department uses to take action against contractors who defraud the government.

As USA TODAY reported in October, the Justice Department began issuing civil investigative demands to employers in a wide range of industries earlier this year, directing them to submit information about their diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

The use of CID, a legal tool that allows the government to collect information during civil investigations and is typically reserved for going after government contractors who submit fraudulent invoices for services, has rattled American companies because it leaves them vulnerable to claims that could reach millions of dollars.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Verizon Communications are among the companies requested to investigate by the Justice Department. Google was not immediately available for comment. Verizon declined to comment.

Department of Justice increases oversight of DEI

Just hours after taking the oath of office, President Donald Trump issued an executive order eliminating diversity programs and directing federal contractors to end “unlawful DEI discrimination.” Fearing lawsuits and the loss of government contracts, dozens of the nation’s largest companies, from McDonald’s to Facebook owner Meta, have scaled back or eliminated their DEI programs.

In May, the Justice Department announced its intention to investigate federal contractors and grant recipients by creating the Civil Rights Fraud Initiative, which threatens legal action under the False Claims Act, a civil law that allows the government to recover funds lost to fraud.

Government scrutiny is only increasing as the Trump administration moves to aggressively pressure employers to review their hiring practices in line with the president’s political agenda.

Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee in July, Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, warned of the Trump administration’s crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. In his testimony, Dillon promised that the Trump administration would file “numerous investigations and lawsuits against organizations that continue to violate federal civil rights laws.”

“Either DEI takes care of itself or we abolish it,” Dillon told senators.

False Claims Act lawsuits can be costly

Lawyers told USA TODAY that damages and fines in False Claims Act cases can quickly add up. Defendants risk being held liable for three times the damages claimed by the government.

Additionally, the Department of Justice encourages whistleblowers to file DEI lawsuits on behalf of the government and receive a cut of the proceeds. Last year, the Justice Department received approximately $3 billion in False Claims Act settlements and judgments.

Lawyers say even the threat of a False Claims Act investigation is a powerful cudgel. And being a target of the Trump administration carries significant business risks, from reputational damage to shareholder class action lawsuits.

David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University School of Law, told USA TODAY in October that “many leaders have said to me, ‘We’re very confident in what we’re doing from a purely legal standpoint.'” “And many of them will say, ‘If we’re dragged into the mud by this administration, none of that matters.'”

Is a home gym tax deductible? False post claiming President Trump signed the bill

0

Americans could get an even bigger tax refund in 2026, but it won’t be for home gym equipment.

A Dec. 24 Facebook post from Lift Big Eat Big, an account with more than 100,000 followers, said President Donald Trump had signed the Home Gym Exemption Act. USA TODAY could find no evidence that it actually happened.

“Squat racks, barbells, and plates are now 100% tax deductible as medical expenses,” the post says. A similar post was shared by X in recent days and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. A review of recent presidential actions and passed laws shows that this is not true.

The Facebook account confirmed to USA TODAY that the post was satirical.

Similar provisions were considered for “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Although President Trump has not signed any such bill, a similar bill known as the Personal Health Investments Today Act (PHIT Act) has been reintroduced for at least the fifth time this year.

The 2025 version, introduced in the Senate in March, would add caps on some sports and fitness expenses to the medical expense tax deductibility category.

The bill was referred to a committee but received no further action, although similar provisions were considered in the giant tax and spending bill known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The House version included a provision that would amend the Health Savings Account (HSA) tax code so that “amounts paid for qualified sports and fitness expenses are considered to be paid as medical expenses,” but this provision was omitted from the Senate and final version of the bill.

The Health and Fitness Association, a global nonprofit industry group, said it was “disappointed” that the bill, which is “rooted in the PHIT Act,” was not introduced into the Senate bill.

“It would have helped millions of people stay active and healthy at a time when chronic disease is on the rise and families are feeling financial pressure,” the group said in a statement.

(This article has been updated to add new information and correct the name of the satirical bill.)
