When should you take down your Christmas decorations? Tradition says:

0

play

Is it time to remove the hall deck?

With Christmas just around the corner, an old debate is making a comeback. “When should you take down seasonal decorations?”

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

But for those who aren’t sure when to take down their Christmas tree, religious traditions, research data, and social media discourse can serve as a guide.

There is no consensus on the “right” time to take down Christmas decorations, but some say it depends on how early you take them down in the first place. Others, either by choice or by Christian teaching, recognize the decorating season as extending to early January.

As the debate heats up online, let’s take a look at when people pack up their trees and prunings.

When do most people take down their Christmas trees?

If you think the ornaments should have already come down, you might be barking up the wrong tree, at least according to recent research.

A YouGov survey of more than 1,000 American adults conducted earlier this month found that most of those surveyed had removed their Christmas tree at some point in January.

The survey found that 47% of people who planned to put up a Christmas tree this year planned to take it down during the first week of January.

Another 24% of adults surveyed said they would take down their tree in late January, and 20% said they would take down their tree between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Some say we should wait for Epiphany.

Traditional Christian teaching states that Christmas should be celebrated until January 6, known as the Feast of the Epiphany, so many people choose to keep their decorations up at least until then.

Christian theology says that Christmas should be celebrated for 12 days starting on December 25th, rather than just celebrating it on December 25th. So the 12 days of Christmas start on December 25th and end on January 6th.

January 5th is the last night of the period and is called “Twelfth Night.” The next day, January 6th, is Epiphany or Three Kings Day, according to Boston Public Library and History.com.

The Feast of Epiphany refers to the day the three kings traveled to Bethlehem to meet the infant Jesus. How this day is celebrated varies by culture and Christian branch, but it is widely considered to be the end of the Christmas season.

Social media split: “Rudolph isn’t home yet”

Opinions vary widely on social media about the right time to remove holiday furniture.

Some accept the criticism, acknowledging that the interior was removed on December 26th.

“I’m a psychopath so I’m going to take down all my Christmas decorations at 9am on the 26th,” user @christinalujan7 said in a TikTok video.

Most commenters on this video agreed. One person wrote, “I’ve stopped being overstimulated by decorations lol,” and another said, “Some people like a clean house.”

But some were not united in their cleanup preferences.

“Once the holidays are over, it’s time to take down Christmas and reset the house! This is the most satisfying feeling for me, but I left the tree in for a cozy winter,” @carissacleansitall said in a Dec. 29 TikTok video, which received mixed reactions from commenters.

“Girl, Rudolph isn’t even home yet,” one person commented. Another said: “This is a trend I won’t be participating in. Tree only ends January 6th.”

Select Home Warranty Reviews. 2026 costs, plans and coverage

0

Select Home Warranty combines affordable plans with valuable benefits like free roof leak coverage, making it a strong contender for budget-conscious homeowners. But is this home warranty company right for you? This Select Home Warranty review examines plans, coverage, costs, exclusions, and more to help you make the most informed decision about your home.

About Select Home Warranty

Select HomeWarranty is a popular home warranty provider known for its competitive pricing and valuable benefits. Homeowners can choose from three major plans (Bronze, Gold, and Platinum) that cover appliances, systems, or both.

What sets Select apart is its affordability. Plans start at less than $50 per month with discounts, and all plans include free roof leak protection, a perk that many competitors charge extra for.

While the Select Home Warranty offers solid value, there are tradeoffs. Coverage limits for appliances and certain systems are lower than industry averages, so you may have to pay out-of-pocket for a complete replacement. Additionally, although the company does not provide standard service fees upfront, most customers report fees ranging from $65 to $100 per bill.

Choose the advantages and disadvantages of home warranty

Strong Points:

  • Affordable add-ons starting at $3.33 per month
  • Discounts on all three protection plans
  • Free roof leak protection included with all plans

Cons:

  • Standard service charges not listed
  • Low coverage caps for plumbing and electrical

Alternatives to choosing a home warranty

When it comes to value, the Select Home Warranty is it. The company offers low monthly rates with competitive coverage. Coverage limits may be lower than average, but you can still get good value for your money.

However, if you’re concerned about having full coverage for appliance replacement, you may want to choose another option. For the highest level of coverage and annual coverage limits of up to $50,000, American Home Shield is your next best choice.

Choose your home warranty plan and price

With discounts, all Select Home Warranty plans cost less than $50 per month. This price includes a comprehensive Platinum plan that covers both home systems and appliances. The average home warranty plan costs about $45 per month, but Select Home Warranty can match or exceed that price.

Select Home Guarantee does not list standard service call charges. However, customers report costs ranging from $65 to $100 per claim. Service fees may vary by plan and location. If you live in an area where repairs are expensive, the cost may be even higher.

System coverage limits are in line with industry averages, with heating and cooling system coverage valued at $3,000. However, the $500 per appliance limit may not be enough to cover a complete replacement. That said, the low monthly cost of the Select Home Warranty Plan at least covers most of your costs, so it’s worth sticking to these limits.

  • Bronze ($60.42/month or $44.42 off): Covers home appliances such as clothes dryers, clothes washers, cooktops, dishwashers, garbage disposals, built-in microwaves, refrigerators, and stoves/ovens. $500 coverage limit per appliance.
  • Gold ($60.42 per month or $44.42 with discount): Systems that cover air conditioning systems, ductwork, heating systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and water heaters. Coverage limit is $3,000 per HVAC unit. $500 each for electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Platinum ($63.75 per month or $47.75 with discount): All bronze and gold plans.

Choose your home warranty discount

Select Home Warranty offers discounts to homeowners on all plans. Get up to $150 off, free roof leak protection, and 2 months of free service for your first year. These promotions tend to run throughout the year, but you may find even better deals during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.

Select Additional Home Warranty Coverage

Select HomeWarranty has incredibly affordable add-on options compared to competitors that charge $10 or more for each add-on. All plans come with free roof leak protection, but you can also add other essential items that are prone to failure, such as a spa or freezer.

additional items average cost
central vacuum $3.33/month
lawn sprinkler system $5.83/month
pool $8.33/month
roof leak Free (included in plan)
purification system $5.83/month
spa $5.83/month
freestanding freezer $3.33/month
drain pump $3.33/month
well pump $3.33/month

What does the Select Home Warranty cover?

General home systems and appliances are covered by the Select Home Warranty Plan. Bronze plans cover major appliances, Gold plans cover systems, and Platinum plans cover both systems and appliances. A feature of Select Home Warranty is that all plans include free roof leak coverage. Most providers charge up to $10 per month for this add-on, so it’s a worthwhile bonus.

The appliances and systems you can expect coverage for are:

  • electrical system
  • water heater
  • refrigerator
  • dishwasher

How USA TODAY evaluates Select Home Warranties

USA TODAY’s editorial team uses an in-house methodology to rank home warranty providers, including leading companies like Select Home Warranty. To create our list of the top 10 home warranty companies, we collect quotes and review the contracts of the top 20 home warranty companies. Criteria such as plan options, coverage details, pricing, quality of service, customer satisfaction, and overall reliability were used to determine the list.

Bottom line: Is Select Home Warranty right for you?

If you want an affordable home warranty that covers major home systems and appliances, Select Home Warranty is a good option. With discounts, plans start at an average of $44 per month.

However, coverage for plumbing and electrical systems is lower than what our competitors offer, and your costs may not be fully covered if these systems fail. If higher coverage limits are important to you, a provider like American Home Shield is a better option.

FAQ

What are the disadvantages of Select Home Warranty?

Select Home Warranty offers lower limits for plumbing and electrical coverage. Also, standard service call charges are not listed. The cost may vary depending on your location and the type of claim.

Which is better: American Home Shield or Select Home Warranty?

it depends. American Home Shield’s coverage limits are high, but Select Home Warranty’s plans are inexpensive. If you want a home warranty on a budget, we recommend Select. If complete coverage is your priority, American Home Shield is a better choice.

Which is better: Old Republic or Select Home warranty?

Old Republic has higher coverage limits than Select Home Warranty, but Select has a lower monthly fee and all plans include roof leak coverage.

George Clooney, wife Amal and children become French citizens

0

play

France is saying Bienvenue to the Clooney family.

George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their two 8-year-old children, Alexander and Ella, have been granted French citizenship, according to government documents seen by USA TODAY.

The Ocean’s Eleven star, 64, has previously talked about moving his family to France so his children can grow up with a more normal life outside of Hollywood.

“We live on a farm in France,” Clooney told Esquire in an October profile. “I grew up on a farm for a good part of my life, so when I was a kid I hated the whole idea of a farm. But now, for them, it’s like not having an iPad. They have to eat dinner with the adults and bring in the dishes. They have a much better life.”

he continued. “I was worried about raising my kids in the culture of Los Angeles, Hollywood. I felt like my kids would never get a proper shake up in life. France is completely unconcerned about fame. I don’t want my kids walking around worrying about paparazzi. I don’t want them to be compared to someone else’s famous kids.”

Clooney has residences in England and a home in his native Kentucky, but a farm in France is his and his family’s primary residence, according to a profile of Clooney in the New York Times published in February.

“Growing up in Kentucky, all I wanted was to get off the farm and escape that life,” he told the Times. “Now I find myself back to my old life. I drive tractors and stuff. This is my best chance at a normal life.”

Clooney married his wife Amal, a human rights lawyer, in 2014 and gave birth to twins in 2017.

The Oscar-winning actor is leaving his role in the Netflix drama Jay Kelly, where he plays a fictional A-list movie star with similarities to Clooney himself.

George Clooney reflects on fame and the ‘Jay Kelly’ what-if story

George Clooney reflects on fame, failure, and the life lessons his father taught him to pursue forever through movies.

Speaking to USA TODAY about the film, Clooney said that until he met his wife, he “wasn’t really interested in starting a family.” “Listen, I’m 64 years old and a father of two eight-year-olds, so obviously I was putting something off,” he joked.

Clooney also recalled a memorable conversation he had with his father 25 years ago about having children.

“I remember saying, ‘Having kids is kind of living forever. Well, my version is the movies I’m in, and those are my kids,'” Clooney said. “And my dad said, ‘How many stars can you name from 1920?'” He came up with about five names. He said, “That’s five.” That’s all I can name, but that was 80 years ago. ”

“He said, ‘You’re not buying eternity with these movies. You’re probably buying 80 years.’ And it was funny. I didn’t agree with him at the time, but now I completely understand what he’s saying, because I’m so happy in my life.”

These tax savings will expire within 48 hours

0

play

Don’t start the new year until you’ve saved as much as you can in taxes by 2025. Yes, there are still savings available, but you have less than 48 hours to earn them.

Below is a list of our experts’ best tips on saving taxes before you say goodbye to 2025.

Tax reduction for 2 days only

Thanks to the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022, if you’re under age 59 1/2, you can take up to $2,500 from your retirement plan to pay for qualified long-term care insurance premiums without the 10% early withdrawal penalty.

However, this distribution is still taxed as income and must be made after December 29th. That leaves only two days to make distributions before the new year begins: Dec. 30 and 31, said Richard Pong, a certified public accountant in San Francisco.

The last and final call for these tax cuts forever

The Residential Clean Energy Credit and Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit are only available through December 31st.

  • Residential clean energy credits: If completed by the end of the year, it will cover 30% of the installation cost of certain energy items such as solar cells, small wind turbines and battery storage.
  • Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: Homeowners can pay 30% of the cost of energy-efficient improvements such as windows, doors, insulation, and HVAC systems if they are up and running by Dec. 31.

Catch-up contributions to 401(k) plans

Individuals who are 50 years of age or older at the end of the calendar year can make annual catch-up contributions to their 401(k) plan, but must do so by December 31st.

All individuals age 50 and older, except those between the ages of 60 and 63, can contribute an additional $7,500. People between the ages of 60 and 63 can make a “super” catch-up contribution of $11,250.

Contributions to a 401(k) account are made with pre-tax dollars, effectively reducing your taxable income when tax season approaches. Instead, withdrawals are taxed.

When you save in an IRA, you can get $1,000 back by the tax filing deadline for the 2025 tax year (typically April 15).

Item creators please be generous

Non-itemizers must wait to donate until after the new year, when they can claim a cash contribution deduction of up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for joint filers. All payments made in 2025 are non-deductible.

In contrast, item creators must donate generously by December 31st to make the most of their gift. Next year, only charitable contributions exceeding 0.5% of a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income will qualify for the deduction. So let’s say your AGI is $200,000. The first $1,000 of your donation is not tax deductible.

Next year, people in the top 37% tax bracket will only get a 35% tax break on all itemized deductions, not just charitable donations. This means that for a $10,000 donation, you will receive a tax benefit of $3,500 this year instead of $3,700.

FBI releases photos of $40 million bike collection in Ryan Wedding case

play

An astonishing number of “luxury” motorcycles worth an estimated $40 million were seized in Mexico earlier this month, and authorities believe they belonged to former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding.

The 44-year-old Canadian is on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fugitive List for allegedly running an international drug ring that transported cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, Canada and the United States. Just last month, the U.S. Department of Justice increased the reward to $15 million for information leading to Wedding’s arrest and conviction.

On Monday, December 29, the FBI Los Angeles office released several photos of what Mexican authorities had recovered. Mexico’s Secretariat for Security and Civil Protection said 62 motorcycles, two vehicles, artwork, two Olympic medals and drugs were among the items found.

Last month, authorities executed search warrants on four properties in Mexico City that led to the recovery. However, weddings are still widely held. Officials believe he is in Mexico and being protected by the Sinaloa cartel.

Wedding was indicted last year in Los Angeles federal court on multiple drug-related charges. In November, a new charge was added for ordering the killing of a witness in a federal case.

Wedding represented Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, finishing 24th in the men’s parallel giant slalom.

Facts about Russia’s claim that Ukraine attacked Putin’s residence

0

play

MOSCOW, Dec 30 (Reuters) – Moscow has accused Kiev of trying to attack the presidential palace in northern Russia, but Ukrainian leaders have dismissed the claim as a lie aimed at allowing Moscow to continue its war in Ukraine.

Here’s what we know so far:

What is Russia’s accusation?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday accused Ukraine of attacking the presidential palace in the Novgorod region with 91 long-range attack drones overnight, and said Russia would retaliate.

He said no one was injured and that the Russian government had not stopped negotiating to end the war in Ukraine, but that its negotiating position was being reassessed in the wake of the attack, which he described as “state terrorism.”

Mr. Lavrov provided no evidence of the accusation. He said Russia had already identified targets inside Ukraine.

What did Ukraine say?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed Russia’s accusations as “another lie” aimed at justifying further attacks on Ukraine and prolonging the war that has been underway since President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022.

“This story of an alleged ‘settlement attack’ is a complete fabrication aimed at justifying further attacks against Ukraine, including Kiev, and Russia’s own refusal to take the necessary steps to end the war. A typical Russian lie.”

Russia frequently launches hundreds of drones and fires missiles in near-daily attacks on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibikha on Monday called on world leaders to condemn Russia for its suspicions, adding on Tuesday: “Almost a day has passed and Russia still has not provided any plausible evidence for Ukraine’s alleged ‘attack on Putin’s residence.’ And they will not do that, because there is nothing. No such attack has taken place.”

Where is President Putin’s residence?

Valdai House, also known as “Uzin” or “Dolgiye Volody,” is a heavily guarded complex on the shores of Lake Valdai, about 355 miles north of Moscow.

Where was President Putin at the time of the alleged attack?

It is unclear where Putin was at the time of the attack, but he held talks in the Kremlin on Saturday and Monday. President Putin has not yet publicly commented on the situation, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that such details should not be made public in light of recent events.

Just before Lavrov’s statement, Putin met with Defense Minister Andrei Belosov, Federal Security Service Chief Alexander Bortnikov, and senior officials in the Kremlin about the war in Ukraine. He did not mention Ukraine’s drone attack on the residence.

What did Donald Trump say about the alleged attack on Putin’s residence?

President Putin informed President Trump of the attack on Monday.

“I don’t like it. It’s not good,” President Trump told reporters.

“Being aggressive is another thing,” Trump said. “It’s another thing to attack his house. This is not the right time to do that. And I learned that from President Putin today. I was very angry about that.”

Where was the suspected drone?

After Lavrov’s statement, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that 91 drones were shot down en route to the presidential palace, 49 of them over the Bryansk region, 450 kilometers from Valdai, one over the Smolensk region and 41 over the heavily forested Novgorod region.

The Ministry of Defense did not mention the attack on the mansion in its previous reports on military operations. Novgorod Governor Alexander Doronov said air defense forces and fighter jets were shooting down the Ukrainian drone.

Asked whether Russia had physical evidence of a drone attack, Peskov said on Tuesday that the issue of debris was a matter for the Defense Ministry.

Has Russia accused Ukraine of similar attacks before?

Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the Kremlin with drones in 2023 in an attempt to assassinate President Putin. Ukraine denies involvement in the incident and accuses Russia of fabricating excuses to escalate the war.

The New York Times later reported that U.S. intelligence believed Ukrainian security services were behind the attack, but it was unclear whether President Zelenskiy or his top officials were aware of the operation. The paper said some officials believed Zelenskiy was unaware.

What will be the impact on peace negotiations?

Russia on Monday said it would not withdraw from peace talks, but would retaliate and review its position in the talks.

“The diplomatic outcome will be a tightening of the Russian Federation’s negotiating position,” Peskov said on Tuesday. He did not say which targets Russia might attack, but said the military would know when and how to respond.

Chapel Lawn ‘disappointed’ by Brigitte Bardot’s racist and sexist views

Chapel Lawn pays tribute to Brigitte Bardot.

The French actress, who passed away on December 28 at the age of 91, was mentioned in Rohan’s 2023 song “Red Wine Supernova.” “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot,” Lorne sings at the beginning. “She taught me things I didn’t know.”

Shortly after news of Bardot’s death was announced, Rohan took to Instagram to pay tribute to the “and God created woman” icon, writing, “Rest in peace, Bardot. She was the inspiration for my Red Wine Supernova.”

The post received immediate backlash from the pop star’s fans, who pointed out Bardot’s documented history of racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks. “Oh my god, I had no idea about the outrageous things that Bardot was representing,” Roan wrote on Instagram on Dec. 29. “Obviously I can’t tolerate this. I’m so sorry to know.”

In her 2003 book, The Silent Cry, Bardot criticized immigration and what she called the “Islamization of France.” The actress has publicly referred to gay people as “venue freaks” and once called the #MeToo movement “hypocritical and ridiculous and not funny.”

She has been outspoken about her political views and support for far-right politicians, openly supporting right-wing candidates such as Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Assembly party. In addition, Bardot also made inflammatory statements against Muslims and was convicted five times by the French government for inciting racial hatred.

In contrast, Roan has fiercely championed LGBTQ+ and feminist causes throughout her career, calling for a livable wage and health insurance for musicians in her Grammy Awards speech.

Despite her far-right leanings, Bardot was on record as anti-President Donald Trump. In 2017, the animal rights activist slammed the Trump administration for approving the import of Zimbabwean elephant hunting trophies.

“No tyrant in the world can be held responsible for the extinction of ancient species that are part of humanity’s world heritage,” Bardot said in a letter to Trump released through his foundation. This is a “cruel decision supported by Zimbabwe’s insane dictator and confirms the sick and deadly power you claim over the entire flora and fauna world. Your shameful actions confirm the rumors that you are unfit for public office.”

What is E. coli? What are the symptoms?

Most Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria exist harmlessly in the intestines of humans and animals. However, some can cause mild to life-threatening gastrointestinal illness if ingested, the CDC says.

The type of E. coli that can cause diarrhea is usually spread through food or water contaminated with feces. For example, if food handlers do not practice proper hand-washing hygiene after using the restroom, infection can spread. Animals such as cows can also spread E. coli to food and food crops.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, according to the CDC.

How long has Donald Trump been president? How many days has it been?

0

President Donald Trump has been back in office for less than a year, and in that time his administration has relentlessly pushed its policies forward.

President Trump has enacted sweeping tariffs, cut the federal workforce, increased immigration enforcement against people without legal status, deployed the National Guard to American cities, and passed sweeping tax and policy legislation. The administration has also been hit with obstacles by the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the longest government shutdown in history.

President Trump’s approach has been controversial and not necessarily popular, as his approval ratings have stagnated on average since the spring. Some recent polls show that he is losing support over the economic response that helped win him reelection.

So how long has it been since he returned to the White House? Check out our ongoing count of President Trump’s days in office.

How long has Donald Trump been president?

Mr. Trump was sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2025.

ICE can obtain some Medicaid data, California federal judge rules

The ruling allows the Trump administration to share the names, addresses and phone numbers of undocumented immigrants who receive Medicaid benefits with federal immigration authorities.

play

A federal judge ruled on Dec. 29 that the Trump administration can resume sharing the location and other information of some Medicaid patients with immigration authorities, handing a victory to the White House’s aggressive deportation efforts.

U.S. District Judge Vince Chabria of California said in his ruling that the federal government can legally share “basic biographical, location, and contact information” under the law. The ruling will take effect on January 6, according to court documents.

The move comes months after 20 states, including California, filed a lawsuit in July seeking to prevent the federal government from sharing data on illegal immigrants obtained by the Department of Health and Human Services with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“We are disappointed in the court’s decision to allow some Medicaid data to be shared with ICE,” the office of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, one of about 20 Democratic officials who filed a lawsuit seeking to block the information-sharing effort, said in a statement.

Chhabria noted in his ruling that while basic Medicaid information can be shared with ICE, the injunction also applies to information beyond that, such as data about immigrants legally in the country.

“Aside from the basic information discussed above, the policy is entirely unclear and does not appear to be the product of a coherent decision-making process,” he wrote.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the ruling is “a victory for the rule of law and for American taxpayers.”

Undocumented immigrants are in most cases ineligible for federal health benefits and are not covered by comprehensive Medicaid.

However, some undocumented immigrants can receive life-saving treatment in emergency rooms through Emergency Medicaid, and some states, including California, allow them to receive other state-subsidized benefits regardless of their immigration status.

The Trump administration is requiring federal agencies to share information with immigration authorities to further the president’s deportation plan. Judges have blocked some of those efforts.

In September, a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the U.S. Department of Agriculture from collecting data on recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP. In November, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., blocked the IRS from sharing tax return information with ICE.

Chhabria has not issued a final ruling in the Medicaid information case. A hearing is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 2, according to court records.

How to deal with conflicting political views in the workplace

Johnny C. Taylor Jr. answers workplace questions every week on USA TODAY. Taylor is president and CEO of SHRM, the world’s largest human resources professional organization, and author of Reset: A Leader’s Guide to Work in an Age of Upheaval.

Have a question? Please submit here.

question: A colleague of mine has strong political and social views and frequently posts about them online. I don’t agree with many of their views, but frankly I find some of them offensive. Do I need to work with this person or is it okay to ask not to be assigned to the same project? – Malik

Answer: I often say this. We are more diverse than ever, but also more divided. In today’s polarized world, you will undoubtedly work with people who hold opposing political or social views. And to be honest, I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

One of the most overlooked, but important forms of diversity is diversity of thought. Not everyone thinks like you, and that’s okay. And, certainly, opposing views can sometimes be felt as offensive or even offensive. I understand that. However, discomfort is not the same as abuse, and is not in itself a reason to avoid working with someone.

The differences are: At work, we evaluate people based on their actions, not their beliefs. If your co-workers are professional, polite, and follow company policies, you’re not breaking workplace rules even if you’re disgusted by what you see online.

That said, there are definitely boundaries. A line is crossed when someone’s behavior in the workplace becomes disrespectful, harassing, intimidating, discriminatory, or disruptive to the team. This is where the human resources department should and must intervene.

Because politeness is not a nice-to-have, it’s a prerequisite for work. According to SHRM research, U.S. workers experience or witness more than 70 million incidents of workplace incivility every day. And most of it comes from people who let their personal differences overshadow their professional responsibilities.

But before you consider asking for a reassignment, be sure to check. Ask yourself: Has this person ever treated me unprofessionally at work, or do I just disagree with them? Human resources handles these two situations very differently.

Now, even if you find out that your coworker didn’t violate workplace policy, that doesn’t mean you need to get angry. There are still practical steps you can take.

Let’s start simple. Unfollow online. Yes, even on LinkedIn. Just because you’re working with someone doesn’t mean you have to use their content. You don’t get paid to increase their follower count, but you do get paid by working with them respectfully.

Once you remove unnecessary friction, remember: We have much more in common than we think. Therefore, focus on what unites you, not what divides you.

At SHRM, we put those ideas into action. I once challenged two employees who were at loggerheads politically to have lunch together for 10 cents at SHRM. They accepted it, and what will happen? I felt less nervous. They found common ground that transcended politics. Now, this is a habit. We pay for lunch for two colleagues, as long as the two don’t know each other very well.

After all, you can’t choose your colleagues. But you can always choose how you show up. As long as both of you remain professional, there is no need for reassignment.

And what if that standard is not met? That’s when you go to HR.

Judge blocks end of deportation protection for South Sudanese migrants

A federal district judge in Boston has granted an emergency request by several South Sudanese to prevent their temporary protected status from expiring.

play

BOSTON, Dec 30 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Tuesday blocked U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration’s plan to end temporary protection from deportation granted to hundreds of South Sudanese living in the United States.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelly in Boston granted an emergency request by several South Sudanese individuals and immigrant rights groups to prevent their temporary protected status from expiring as scheduled after January 5th.

Kelly, who was appointed by former Democratic President Joe Biden, issued the order after four immigrants from South Sudan filed a lawsuit with the nonprofit group African Communities Together. The lawsuit argued that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s actions were illegal and could result in deportation to a country facing a series of humanitarian crises.

South Sudan has been ravaged by conflict since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011. Fighting has continued across much of the country since a five-year civil war that killed an estimated 400,000 people ended in 2018, and the U.S. State Department has advised citizens not to travel to the country.

The United States began placing South Sudan under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 2011.

This status is available to people who have experienced a natural disaster, armed conflict, or other extraordinary situation in their home country. Grant work permits to eligible immigrants and provide temporary protection from deportation.

According to the complaint, approximately 232 South Sudanese nationals are TPS beneficiaries who have sought refuge in the United States, and an additional 73 have pending applications for similar protection.

On November 5, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced a notice to terminate TPS for South Sudan, stating that the country no longer meets the criteria for the designation.

Her department has similarly moved to eliminate temporary protection for foreign nationals from countries including Syria, Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua, sparking several court challenges.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said ahead of the court’s ruling: “With the renewed peace in South Sudan, the country’s demonstrated commitment to ensuring the safe reintegration of its returning nationals, and improved diplomatic relations, now is the appropriate time to conclude what was always intended to be a temporary designation.”

The complaint alleges that the agency’s actions violate the statutes governing the TPS program, ignore the dire humanitarian situation that remains in South Sudan, and are motivated by discrimination against non-white immigrants in violation of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Here’s how to extend the 4% rule to get more out of your retirement savings

0

play

The 4% rule in retirement puts a strict budget on your leisure time. Even if you save $1 million, the 4% formula only leaves you with $40,000 to spend in the first year.

But what if I said you could use 5%? Or 5.7%?

Investment researchers have been experimenting with the 4% rule, looking for ways retirees can safely spend more than 4 cents per retirement.

In a December paper, Morningstar proposes adjustments to the 4% rule that would allow retirees to spend a higher percentage of their savings each year without running out of cash.

I’ll start making adjustments soon. First, let’s review the 4% rule and how it works.

What is the 4% rule for retirement benefits?

The 4% rule means you plan to spend 4% of your savings in your first year of retirement. Then, you spend the same amount each year, adjusted for inflation.

Financial advisor Bill Bengen created this rule in 1994 as a simple formula for funding your retirement. According to Bengen’s calculations, if you depleted your savings at that rate, the money would last you 30 years into retirement.

Bengen arrived at the 4% figure based on the historical performance of the stock and bond markets. Bengen found that assuming a 50/50 ratio of stocks to bonds, new retirees can safely spend about 4% of their savings each year with minimal risk of running out of money.

The Morningstar report expands on the work of Bengen and other retirement researchers.

In “The State of Retirement Income: 2025”, Morningstar calculates that retirees in 2025 can safely withdraw about 3.9% per year, adjusted for inflation, and have a 90% chance of that money lasting 30 years.

The strength of the 4% rule is that it guarantees that you will almost never outlive your money. Disadvantages: Very conservative.

“The 4% rule is based on looking retrospectively at what kinds of withdrawal rates have worked in the past,” said Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist at Morningstar. “And that’s based on a worst-case scenario.”

Is the 4% rule too conservative?

If you follow the 4% rule closely, “in many cases you’ll end up with a significant amount of money left over after you die,” Arnott says.

That may be a good thing for some retirees.

“If you want to build a legacy for your heirs or need a very large emergency fund, the 4% rule is a great guide,” said Robert Brokamp, senior retirement advisor and financial planning expert at The Motley Fool.

However, the typical American between the ages of 55 and 65 only has about $185,000 in household retirement savings, according to the 2022 Consumer Finance Survey. Applying the 4% rule to $185,000 would give you $7,400 per year. There aren’t that many.

Bengen himself continues to tinker with the 4% rule. He now envisions a slightly less conservative retirement portfolio (55% stocks, 40% bonds, 5% cash) and invests in a broader range of assets.

Given that composition and strong stock price performance in recent years, Bengen proposes upgrading the 4% rule to a 4.7% rule.

Bengen said a 4% spending rate is “too stingy for the current market environment.”

In a December report, Morningstar examined several other modifications to the 4% rule that would allow retirees to spend more of their savings each year.

Here are some strategies.

actual expenditure

This adjustment is based on research showing that retirees generally spend less as they get older.

According to Morningstar research, a “real spending” strategy allows you to safely start spending 5% of your retirement savings. In each subsequent year, last year’s numbers are adjusted for inflation and reduced by 2%.

avoid inflation

This simple adjustment follows the same basic formula as the 4% rule. If the value of your portfolio declines in a particular year, the next year’s inflation adjustment is skipped.

With this strategy, you can start your retirement with a withdrawal rate of 4.3%, Morningstar found.

guardrail

This strategy becomes even more complex. It’s based on the 4% rule, but adjusts your spending depending on market trends.

Let’s say you withdraw 4% of your $1 million in retirement savings, or $40,000, in year one. In the second year, you withdraw $40,000 plus a 3% inflation adjustment, or $41,200.

Then divide that sum ($41,200) by your savings balance, which increased to $1.4 million in a bull market. The result is approximately 2.9%.

Guardrails come into play here. If your new withdrawal rate is more than 20% below your initial level, you will reward yourself with a 10% “increase”. Instead of $41,200, you’ll have an additional $4,120 to spend.

Guardrails also apply to down markets. If your new retirement rate is at least 20% above your initial level, you will receive a 10% “pay cut.”

With the guardrail method, you can start your retirement with a 5.2% spending rate, Morningstar reports.

a certain percentage

This adjustment to the 4% rule is thankfully easy. Each year, at retirement, you withdraw the same percentage of your savings.

To avoid drastically reducing the amount available, this strategy has a “floor” limit. This means your expenses will never be less than 90% of the amount you withdrawn in the first year.

The declining balance method allows retirees to safely withdraw 5.7% of their savings at the start of retirement.

Donation method

This is a variation of the constant percentage method. To smooth out your expenses, use the 10-year average of your retirement portfolio as the basis for calculating your annual withdrawals.

In year 1, you withdraw a percentage of your portfolio based on its valuation at the end of the previous year. Each year thereafter, add one year’s portfolio value to the average. After 10 years, use the 10-year average to calculate subsequent withdrawals.

This method also allows you to start your retirement with a withdrawal rate of 5.7%.

Most of the strategies outlined in Morningstar’s 54-page report allow retirement savers to “spend a little more” “if they want flexibility in their spending,” Arnott said.

With the playoffs coming up, who’s the No. 1 loss for the Rams?

0

play

NFL power rankings entering Week 18 of the 2025 season (previous rankings in parentheses):

1. Los Angeles Rams (1): What? they are still Are they still at the top of the rankings despite losing consecutive games and being relegated to wild card status? In short, yes. Matthew Stafford remains the best quarterback this season. Puka Nacua remains the best wideout this season. Defense is one of the best in NFC when fully equipped. LA will return WR Davante Adams, DB Quentin Lake, and several starting offensive linemen for the playoffs. The Rams’ beleaguered special teams made some big plays in Monday night’s loss to Atlanta, but it was a game that suddenly didn’t mean as much after the weekend unfolded. Yes, we continue to run with a talented team that can beat anyone and, more importantly, do it anywhere.

2. Seattle Seahawks (2): Why aren’t they No. 1, even though they could end up there in the overall NFC standings? Their defense is formidable and elite, and their special teams are second to none. But QB Sam Darnold still doesn’t have a playoff win on his resume, and Seattle’s run game will be feast or famine. This team could struggle to climb out of a two-score hole against playoff contenders.

3. New England Patriots (5): Why aren’t they No. 1 in the overall AFC standings when they could end up being No. 1? Drake Maye looks like a future MVP…and maybe even the next MVP if Stafford loses enough momentum. However, this team is an inexperienced team that benefits from a weak schedule, with one of 13 wins against opponents with a current winning record. Is the next generation Pat ready to win big now? TBA.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3): Why aren’t they No. 1 in the AFC overall standings when they could end up being No. 1? Their seven-game winning streak, most of them decisive, currently puts them in second place behind Houston. The Jags can focus on the run, steal the ball, and rush the passer. But QB Trevor Lawrence, who has played since Thanksgiving, is also an unproven player at the pro level anyway when it comes to January football.

5. San Francisco 49ers (4): Why aren’t they No. 1 when they could end up there in the overall NFC standings? Less than two years removed from a Super Bowl near miss, they can shine on the scoreboard with anyone. The main reason for that is that QB Brock Purdy has fiery hot hands and running back Christian McCaffrey is the outrageous rhythm guitar of this offense. But have the Niners lost too many key players, especially on defense, to get through January, even if LB Fred Warner somehow returns at some point in the playoffs? There is no doubt that running enough track meets will leave you dangerously fatigued.

6. Denver Broncos (6): Why aren’t they No. 1 in the AFC overall standings when they could end up being No. 1? The defense is as scary as any team in the league. And while the Broncos have always played at the level of their competitors, that’s not necessarily a bad thing once you get into the postseason. But second-year QB Bo Nix remains something of a wild card, and his pattern of winning in the fourth quarter may be difficult to maintain against top-level competition.

7. Houston Texans (7): Now in the eight-game Heater, their league-best defense (suffocating, opportunistic, and disrespectful to opposing quarterbacks) should be able to play in almost every game. But will they be able to hold out until the end, especially if their offense is often limited in the run game, especially if a franchise that has never reached the AFC title game ends up on the postseason path?

8. Chicago Bears (9): One of the great stories of the 2025 season, the newly crowned NFC North champions appear to be at least a year ahead of schedule, armed with identity and confidence in rookie coach Ben Johnson’s philosophy on and off the field. However, second-year QB Caleb Williams also has no experience in big games. Perhaps more concerning is Chicago’s gambling approach, which has been good at forcing turnovers but has given up at least 27 points in seven of 16 games.

9. Los Angeles Chargers (10): QB Justin Herbert needs a week off considering the abuse he has received this season. Will it be enough for the sixth-year passer to finally get his first playoff win?

10. Philadelphia Eagles (11): Do you think QB Jalen Hurts needs a week off too, considering he hasn’t eclipsed 200 passing yards in the past three games? Well, Philly won all of those games, and we know Hurts will come up big in key moments. However, Week 18 is not that kind of week, so it would be a good opportunity to rest Hurts and other key starters.

11. Buffalo Bills (8): Do you think QB Josh Allen needs a week off given how limited MVP’s butt-legged form has been the past two weeks? Probably. But the man who hasn’t missed a start since his rookie year will likely make at least a cameo appearance Sunday, putting on a red Bills helmet for the first time in a game and playing in what will almost certainly be his last cheer at Highmark Stadium.

12. Green Bay Packers (12): They’re no better than the post-Aaron Rodgers 7th seed. It’s hard to imagine this battered team being anything more than a one-shot in the playoffs.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers (13): They are desperate to be the 4th seed. and Aaron Rodgers. It’s hard to imagine this limited team being more than a one-shot in the playoffs…even if they make it that far.

14. Baltimore Ravens (15): Everyone seems to be expecting another big game from running back Derrick Henry on Sunday night. Just a note – he averaged 57.3 rushing yards in three career games with Pittsburgh.

15. Carolina Panthers (16): The band, which has been winning and losing since Week 7, is set to pick up a win and apparently the NFC South trophy this Sunday.

16. Atlanta Falcons (17): They’re 3-0 this season wearing their gorgeous old uniforms and 4-9 otherwise. Shouldn’t you change your wardrobe before you change management?

17. Minnesota Vikings (20): WR Justin Jefferson’s 59.2 receiving yards per game are the fewest of his career, but that’s not his own fault. But if he hits that average in Week 18, he will join Mike Evans and Randy Moss as the only players to top 1,000 in each of their first six seasons.

18. Detroit Lions (14): The team, which hasn’t lost in a row since 2022, could end this season with a four-game slump, resulting in the Lions falling below .500 for the first time since 2021.

19. Dallas Cowboys (21): Finishing at .500 in 2025 would have seemed more laudable considering the past 12 months, especially considering the departures of former coach Mike McCarthy and DE Micah Parsons. Dallas could get there with just one more win.

20. Cincinnati Bengals (22): A year ago, they were a team no one wanted to play against. Right now, they are a team that no one wants to play against. And just like 12 months ago, once the regular season is over, no one will have to.

21. Indianapolis Colts (19): Nunc Kopi, everyone…I don’t know who to start with next.

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (18): QB Baker Mayfield has avoided just one interception in his past seven starts, which also happens to be the only game the drowning Bucks have won during that span.

23. New Orleans Saints (23): The last team in the NFC South, on a four-game winning streak, may also be the most dangerous club at the moment.

24. Tennessee Titans (24): Congratulations to Pro Bowl WR Chaimera Dike on a historic rookie season…even if he wasn’t the rookie the Titans were hoping for a historic season.

25. Cleveland Browns (29): The idea of firing two-time Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski seems preposterous given the green roster he’s been working on this year, especially considering the potential to blossom in 2026 if the right QB pulls the trigger.

26. Kansas City Chiefs (26): The last time they lost by double digits, Romeo Crennel was the coach and Matt Cassel was the quarterback.

27. Miami Dolphins (27): If they can get there, this year’s 8-9 record will be much better than the 8-9 record they set in 2024.

28. Commander Washington (28): It’s possible the season could end without anyone getting over 900 yards from scrimmage.

29. New York Giants (30): Who is Richard Johnson? He was the last player to reach 1,000 yards receiving in a season despite being 5-8 or less, prior to Giants WR Wan Dale Robinson. If only the odds were shorter for the Giants to take the No. 1 draft pick after their unhelpful win in Las Vegas.

30. Arizona Cardinals (25): A team that could end the season on a nine-game slide and lag far behind the rest of the NFC West looks to be heading into a very important offseason.

31. Las Vegas Raiders (31): Just win, baby? Commitment to excellence?Hehehe.

32. New York Jets (32): It was the first time in 53 years that a team lost four consecutive games by at least 23 points, and only the second time in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). Trust the process.

Falcons and Rams put on a show in MNF final game of 2025 NFL season

0

play

ATLANTA — It’s strange.

A team led by a quarterback who could win his first career NFL MVP is headed to the NFC playoffs.

The other team was eliminated from the playoff race a few weeks ago amid speculation about the job security of a major power broker.

So what good is that equation?

Now, when you add Falcons wonderback Bijan Robinson into the mix, anything can happen.

And it happened.

Buoyed by Robinson’s 195-yard rushing show, including a scintillating 93-yard touchdown run, the Atlanta Falcons dominated the Los Angeles Rams 27-24 in a dramatic performance that kept on giving.

With 21 seconds left, Zane Gonzalez made a 51-yard field goal for the winning point. But the Rams still had a chance to force overtime.

How crazy was it?

L.A. QB Matthew Stafford, who could be the MVP, threw three interceptions and still nearly won the game.

Ah, that tricky NFL. What a show.

There was a pick-six as Falcons safety Jesse Bates III went 34 yards to the house. Rams linebacker Jared Verse one-upped it late in the third quarter by blocking Gonzalez’s field goal try and returning it 76 yards for a touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, Puka Nacua (who else?) made a nice catch between two defenders for a 41-yard TD that apparently clinched the game, except it was negated.

And while Nacua’s catch in the final seconds might have resulted in a field goal try, instant replay confirmed it was incomplete. He landed wide of the frame with the ball in his left arm, and his second leg briefly appeared to leave the grass before he remained on the ground.

Crazy game of inches.

“100 percent,” Nacua agreed. “It takes every effort. It takes every effort.”

Robinson said he sat on the Falcons’ bench while a replay review determined whether he made the catch or not, pleading for more power.

Prayers were answered.

But there was another proof that the Falcons were very committed. While questions remain about the franchise’s direction under head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, they are determined to finish the season on a high note, winning three straight since being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

What do you play with? For one thing, it’s pride. Jobs, one more thing.

“We’re in the NFL,” Robinson said. “You can’t give up on anything in this league. First of all, that’s how injuries happen. That’s how bad things happen. You lose your identity as a team. So for us, as soon as we were eliminated, we made it known that we were going to end the season the right way. We’re going to finish strong. We’re all guys.”

Robinson also marked another banner night by catching five passes for 34 yards, leaving him with 229 yards from scrimmage. He broke the franchise’s single-season record for yards from scrimmage (2,176), which had stood for 43 years since William Andrews set it in 1983, and led the league in total yards with 2,255.

And that record was perfect for a night where the Falcons (7-9) got off to a hot start. They led 21-0…and then had to sweat it out until the end.

But the comeback attempt was no consolation for Stafford, who had his worst game of the season.

“I obviously didn’t play well enough,” he grumbled after the game. “That’s what it is.”

And it was another example of the intense games that have defined the NFL this season.

The Rams (11-5) know that all too well. In Week 16, they led 30-14 in the fourth quarter against Seattle, but lost 38-37 in overtime. This was after an incredible drama in Week 15 when the Falcons defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 28-14 in the fourth quarter. And we won 29-28.

Speaking of the Bucks, Monday night’s result greatly affected their chances of winning their fifth consecutive NFC South title. Even if the Bucs defeat the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, there could be a three-way tie for the division title if all three teams finish with records of 8-9.

And if the Bucks, Panthers and Falcons, who face the New Orleans Saints in a close game on Sunday, tie, the Panthers will have the tiebreaker advantage and the division championship.

Go figure.

“Well, that sucks,” Robinson said. “But that’s the reality. You never know what’s going to happen in this league.”

Of course, crazy things never cease to happen in the NFL, as Monday night was yet another example.

7 tips to survive a “gray divorce” while keeping your assets intact

0

play

For family lawyers, there is a harsh saying that January is “divorce month.”

January is a time for new year resolutions and fresh starts. This time of year is also known as the high season for marital separation, but that reputation may be more myth than reality.

For middle-aged men and women whose marriages have failed, a “gray divorce” can be liberating.

and financial collapse.

Following a gray divorce, generally defined as marital separation after age 50, men’s standard of living is expected to decline by 21%. Women’s living standards will fall by 45%. Both partners see their assets reduced by half.

Despite these risks, the divorce rate for Americans over 55 has doubled since 1990. Researchers say women are more likely to initiate a gray divorce, but they also tend to be worse off financially after the breakup.

Here are seven tips for managing your finances in a gray divorce from AARP and other expert sources.

Don’t expect the same lifestyle after a gray divorce

In the case of divorce, spouses typically divide their assets. However, don’t expect your monthly expenses to be cut in half after the breakup. It is likely that each partner will now pay separately for housing, utilities, insurance, etc.

Michelle Crum, a certified financial planner in Ann Arbor, Michigan, told USA TODAY in June.

Lifestyle adjustments can be particularly difficult for women, who often remain at home despite significantly reduced incomes.

“And they can’t afford a house, they can’t afford the three pets they have,” Niv Persaud, a certified financial planner in Atlanta, told USA TODAY in June.

Don’t get attached to your parents’ home

In a common gray divorce scenario, one partner keeps the home and gives up the other’s treasure trove of property to stay there.

That could be a mistake, experts say. A house is not the same as money in the bank. It’s expensive to maintain. The partner who acquires the house may end up becoming house poor.

“Often people want to stay in their parents’ home for emotional reasons,” George Mans, editor-in-chief of AARP The Magazine, said in a June interview. “But it could be a trap.”

Remember: You’re still going to retire

Saving for retirement is a big issue in gray divorces.

“Generally speaking, what most people have is retirement accounts and home equity,” Monica Dwyer, a certified financial planner in West Chester, Ohio, said in a June interview.

Like the family home, retirement accounts “tend to evoke strong emotions, especially from the spouse whose name is on the account,” writes Diane Harris in an AARP report on gray divorces.

In the event of divorce, a couple’s joint retirement savings can be redistributed into equal shares, one for each partner.

However, how that works depends on where you live. In each of the nine “community property” states, courts divide assets right down the middle, according to Investopedia. In more “equitable distribution” states, courts distribute assets equitably, but not necessarily down the middle.

Financial planners strongly recommend that divorcing couples complete a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO). This is a legal document that explains how your retirement savings will be divided.

This format “could be great” as a tool to divide other property in a divorce, Dwyer said. A spouse who receives funds under a QDRO generally does not have to pay taxes when withdrawing the funds.

Don’t assume all assets are equal

When divorcing spouses decide how to divide their assets, a financial advisor can play an important role in determining the actual value of various assets.

For example, $500,000 in your bank account is worth more than the same amount in your 401(k). why? That’s because retirement savings aren’t yet taxed as income, so early withdrawals can result in penalties.

Similarly, $500,000 in a Roth IRA is worth “a ton more” than the same amount in a traditional IRA, Crum said. “Roth funds are already taxed.”

Diamonds are forever. There is no consolation prize

Alimony is typically awarded during a divorce to the spouse who has a reduced income so that they can maintain the lifestyle they enjoyed during the marriage.

Alimony is awarded more or less forever, or until the spouse dies or remarries. But this arrangement is becoming far less common, AARP reports.

Although the details vary by state, alimony “is now typically designed to last just long enough for the low-income spouse to find a way to support themselves,” Harris writes.

Crum, a Michigan financial planner, advises clients to save a “significant portion” of their alimony payments.

“Alimony probably won’t last forever,” she says. “If you don’t plan well, the person receiving the compensation will be at a disadvantage. Once that’s over, there will be a cliff.”

Don’t fight over valuable possessions

Many divorcing couples engage in long-running feuds over prized possessions, such as keeping a favorite painting to themselves or punishing an ex-spouse by taking it away.

Divorced spouses who really want to antagonize sports fans are “going after football tickets,” Crum said. She once saw a couple spar across the seats at a Michigan Wolverines game.

If the spouses can’t agree on who gets what, a judge will decide, but that scenario often doesn’t work out.

“When you go to court, you’re actually punishing yourself,” Dwyer said.

A better solution, she said, is to divide the couple’s assets through mediation or “collaborative law” and seek to reach an out-of-court settlement.

please continue with your life

Not only are you divorcing your spouse, but you are also divorcing your spouse financially.

Experts say be careful to remove your ex-spouse from your financial accounts. Change beneficiary designations on investment accounts and insurance policies to prevent your ex-husband from accidentally inheriting your stuff.

Divorced spouses may need to rebuild their credit, especially if most of their accounts were in their ex-husband’s name.

“Be especially wary of shared credit cards,” says AARP’s Maness. “Make sure your spouse doesn’t leave the account open.”

Dwyer says it’s also a good idea to monitor your credit report to make sure your own history isn’t tainted by your ex-partner’s history.

“Your ex-boyfriend has your Social Security number,” she said. “If you’re talking about someone who has a problem with gambling, if you’re talking about someone who has a problem with overspending, you want to lock everything down and split everything up.”

Highest Paying Jobs for All Myers-Briggs Personality Types

Perhaps too few job seekers stop to consider which field best suits their personality.

If you know your Myers-Briggs personality type, Resume Genius reporting may be the job for you. If not, we’ll help you figure it out.

Myers-Briggs suggests four “preference pairs” that reflect aspects of a person’s personality. To paraphrase the Myers-Briggs website, personality is characterized by “extroversion” (E) or “introversion” (I), receiving information through “sensing” (S) or “intuition” (N), reaching conclusions through “thinking” (T) or “feeling” (F), and approaching the world through “judging” (J) or “perceiving” (P).

Combining any four preferences gives you one of 16 different personality types (for example, ESTJ, or INFP).

The job seeker website searched Department of Labor data to find the best-paying jobs for each personality type.

To identify suitable areas, the site utilized research from personality database forums. In this forum, we asked people to vote on the best jobs for each personality type. The analysis took the top five jobs by personality category and sorted them by salary.

“While I am an introvert myself, I know that successful workplaces require all types of personalities,” Ed Huang, executive director of Resume Genius, told USA TODAY in August. “Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, the key is to find a position that fits your strengths and allows you to contribute meaningfully.”

Highest Paying Jobs by Personality Type

Here are the highest paying jobs for each Myers-Briggs personality type.

ISTJ: Surgeon. The median annual wage for this job is $239,200. As of 2023, there were 834,500 surgeons nationwide, and the field is expected to grow 4% by 2033.

The ISTJ personality type, also known as the “logisticist,” “succeeds in mastering their craft, no matter how many hours it takes,” the report states. That’s a good thing because surgeons spend years in school.

INFJ: Psychiatrist. The typical psychiatrist earns an annual salary of $226,880. Nationwide employment totals 28,600 people and is expected to grow at a strong 7% by 2033.

Known as “defenders,” INFJs are “always looking for the ‘why’ behind everything,” the report says, which makes them ideal for psychiatry.

ENTJ: Prosecutor. The average wage for this job is $151,160 and 859,000 prosecutors are employed nationwide. This sector is expected to grow by 5% by 2033.

ENTJs, also known as “commanders,” have a “no-nonsense approach” that makes them a natural fit for the job, the report says.

ENFJ: Human Resources Manager. The median income for 208,900 human resources managers nationwide is $140,030. Employment growth is projected to be 6% by 2033.

ISFJ: Pharmacist. The country’s 337,700 pharmacists earn a median income of $137,480, and the field should grow 5% by 2033.

ISFJs are called “defenders.”

“Your presence always makes others feel safe and supported,” the report states. “And as a pharmacist, your patients know they’re safe.”

ISTP: Electrical Engineer. With 287,800 jobs, the median annual wage in the sector is $118,780 and is expected to grow by a whopping 9% by 2033.

INTJ: Data Scientist. The country’s 202,900 data scientists earn an average salary of $112,590, and the field is expected to grow by an impressive 36% by 2033.

The report states that “architects” are “not the loudest people in the room,” adding, “But they don’t have to be. As an INTJ, your work speaks for itself.”

INFP: Animator. The first job on this list with a median salary below six figures is for animator at $99,800. There are 73,300 animators in the country, and the sector is expected to grow by 4% by 2033.

INFPs are called “mediators.” But they are also “dreamers” and “have a talent for finding magic in the everyday,” the report says.

ENTP: Forensic Psychologist. There are 207,500 forensic psychologists in the United States, with a median salary of $94,310. Employment growth is on track to reach 7% by 2033.

ENTPs are “debaters”. The report states that ENTPs “love to dive into complex issues and uncover the truth,” “especially when others are in trouble.”

ESFP: Model. The average model salary is $89,990 for all 3,600 people. By 2033, employment growth is expected to be zero. Clearly, there are enough models in this country.

ESFPs are “entertainers”. Modeling “is the perfect way to express your love of self-expression,” the report said.

ESFJ: Post-secondary teacher. The country’s 1.4 million university faculty members earn an average salary of $83,980, and employment is expected to grow by 8% by 2033.

ESFJ is a “consul”.

“You have a natural talent for connecting with others and creating a warm and supportive environment, which are exactly the qualities that make a great post-secondary teacher,” the report states.

ISFP: Fashion designer. There are 21,900 fashion designers in the United States with an average salary of $80,690. Employment prospects are expected to increase by 5% by 2033.

ISFPs are “adventurers”.

“You may come across as quiet and reserved, but your creativity runs deep and fashion design is the perfect outlet to express it,” the report states.

After a jam-packed 2025, what will be talked about in 2026?There seems to be a lot.

As the new year dawns, many Americans are looking back at 2025. It was a year of historic events, including the inauguration of a president, the appointment of the first American pope, and major pop culture moments such as the release of “Wicked: For Good” and Taylor Swift’s engagement. But more is coming in 2026.

The calendar kicks off with the kickoff of the yearlong U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations, followed by the Winter Olympics in Italy and the much-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show in the San Francisco Bay Area in February.

In pop culture, Hollywood will host the Oscars in March, this time on YouTube instead of ABC, culminating with the Emmy Awards in September. Major film releases include the star-studded Dune Part 3, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, and the new installment of the Hunger Games series.

This year also brings major criminal trials, including those of Luigi Mangione and Tyler Robinson, and the potential for political turmoil as midterm elections begin.

Here are some of the things to expect in 2026.

250th anniversary of America’s founding

July 4, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the formal establishment of the United States as a nation.

It will be marked by a year-long celebration coordinated by the bipartisan America 250 Commission established by Congress in 2016 and the White House Biscentennial Task Force established in 2025.

Events include a statewide “America’s Field Trip” student contest, oral history efforts, volunteer service campaigns, a travel technology exhibition under “America Innovates,” and a community celebration known as America Waves.

Washington, DC’s iconic National Mall hosts major events on July 4th, including military parades, exhibits from all 50 states, fireworks, and a national parade. Separately, the Freedom 250 Initiative will organize high-profile events such as the Great American State Fair across the country, the Patriot Games for youth, the UFC exhibition at the White House, a national prayer service, and the construction of the National Garden of American Heroes.

1st Super Bowl and Bad Bunny Halftime Show

Chatter has surrounded Super Bowl LX since September, when it was announced that Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny would headline the halftime show. The three-time Grammy Award winner is one of the most streamed artists in the world and has largely fended off backlash over his scheduled performance.

The artist has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and ICE, angering some conservatives. Some people dispute Bad Bunny’s American identity, even though Puerto Rico is a US territory.

Still, the NFL defended the decision and promised a good show.

“I don’t think we’ve ever picked an artist that didn’t have some sort of backlash or criticism. It’s pretty hard to do that with literally hundreds of millions of people watching,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told The Associated Press. “He’s one of the most popular and leading entertainers in the world,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Super Bowl LX will be held on February 8, 2026 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The participating teams have not yet been decided. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles won 40-22 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Grand Theft Auto VI

After 13 years of waiting…and again…and again…Rockstar Games has announced the release date for the final, true Grand Theft Auto VI that fans have come to expect. Originally scheduled for release in 2025, it was pushed back to May 2026 and then to November 2026. The latest installment of this cult classic game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.

An all-new character is promised to be coming to Leonida’s Vice City, which is based in Miami, Florida. The game’s development has sparked speculation, complaints, and memes for years, but in 2022, a massive leak added fuel to the fire.

We hope that November 19th will finally be that day.

“Dune: Part 3”, also known as “Dune: Messiah”

The next installment of the sci-fi blockbuster Dune is scheduled to be released in 2026, but fans will still have to wait for a while as it is scheduled for release on December 18th.

Based on Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction series, the Dune series follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), his family, and the House of Atreides as they migrate from the planet Caladan to the desert planet of Arrakis to oversee the mining of the precious space resource Spice.

The first Dune movie, released in 2021, starred Chalamet alongside a star-studded cast that included Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Jason Momoa. The film grossed $402.1 million worldwide and won six Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography.

“Dune: Part 2” has added Oscar-winning actors Austin Butler and Florence Pugh to the mix for a March 2024 release. The film exploded at the box office, grossing $714.8 million worldwide, surpassing its predecessor.

This third installment adds another famous name, with Robert Pattinson playing the antagonist Scytail. If the film follows the storyline of the 1969 novel Dune: Messiah, it will focus on Emperor Paul Atreides as he picks up the pieces of a crusade known as the Fremen Crusade, which left billions dead. As Paul grapples with the weight of leadership, Mua Dib continues his mission to carry out an ancient plan.

2026 Winter Olympics

This time, the Winter Olympics, titled “Milan-Cortina 2026”, will be held from February 6th to 22nd, 2026.

This year’s Winter Games will be held in Italy, co-hosted by the cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The venue was chosen in 2019, with the bid resulting in two Italian cities qualifying for the Olympics over Stockholm and Sweden’s Åre.

This will be the fourth time that the Olympics will be held in Italy, following the 1956 Winter Olympics (Cortina d’Ampezzo), the 1960 Summer Olympics (Rome), and the 2006 Winter Olympics (Turin). Cortina d’Ampezzo was also chosen to host the 1944 Winter Olympics, which were canceled due to World War II.

The main sports at the Winter Olympics include hockey, skiing, figure skating, speed skating, snowboarding, bobsledding, and curling. The Paralympics will be held from March 6th to 15th.

The last Winter Olympics were held in Beijing, making it the only city to host both the Winter and Summer Olympics (the 2008 Summer Olympics were also held in Beijing).

fifa world cup

This year, the United States will welcome athletes from around the world to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 11, 2026 and runs through July 19, 2026.

For the first time ever, the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches held in 16 host cities across the three countries, culminating in the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The event marks the debut of an expanded 48-team format featuring 12 groups of four teams, followed by a knockout stage that includes the top two teams from each group and the top eight third-place teams for a total of 104 matches. This edition also introduces new traditions such as the halftime show at the final and themed mascots representing each host country.

The US has come under fire for announcing plans to send ICE officers “in suits and boots” to the games, with JD Vance saying the agency could detain visitors.

midterm elections

In the world of politics, the midterm elections will be one of the most-watched events of 2026.

Primary elections were held earlier this year, and midterm elections to determine control of Congress are scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

All 435 seats are up for grabs in the House of Representatives, and 35 seats are up for grabs in the Senate, including two special elections in Florida and Ohio. With Republicans currently holding a slim majority, key races to watch in the Senate include tight races in Georgia, Ohio, Florida and Maine, as well as open seats in North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire.

Voters will consider important ballot measures, including a proposal to impose citizenship requirements for voting in Alaska and measures to address marijuana laws, health care spending caps and environmental protections in Arizona and Arkansas.

Criminal Trial: Mangione, Kirk, Reiner

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, faces an ongoing criminal trial in 2026. Mangione is being prosecuted in federal court, Pennsylvania state court, and New York state court.

Mangione has appeared in court for a hearing in 2025, but formal charges have not yet begun as his lawyers work to prepare the case. Mr. Mangione recently appeared in New York state court on Monday, December 1, where his lawyers sought to recover evidence police recovered from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest.

The trial of Tyler Robinson, accused of Charlie Kirk’s murder, is also scheduled to take place in 2026, but is likely to last until the end of the year. Mr. Robinson appeared for his first hearing on December 11th, and his next hearing is scheduled for January 1st.

Court proceedings are also expected to take place in the case of film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner, who died on suspicion of murder in December. Their son, Nick Reiner, remains in jail without bail after being arrested on charges of first-degree murder against the couple. Reiner’s arraignment is scheduled for January 7.

5 Social Security Changes for 2026

0

Get ready to see how Social Security evolves in the new year.

It’s hard to believe that 2025 is almost over. But now that we’re nearing the end of the year, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2026.

If you receive Social Security, you should know that there are big changes coming to the program next year. Even if you don’t collect Social Security, you need to know what’s going to happen starting in January.

Here are five big Social Security changes everyone should know about in 2026.

1. Social security benefits will be increased

Social Security benefits are subject to a cost of living adjustment (COLA) each year. The purpose of the COLA is to ensure that benefits keep pace with inflation. In 2026, Social Security benefits will increase by 2.8%. If this increase goes into effect, average monthly retirement benefits are expected to increase from $2,015 to $2,071.

But don’t consider that raise just yet. If you have Medicare, your benefits may not increase as much. Just as Social Security can change from year to year, Medicare rules can change as well. And in 2026, the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B will increase by $17.90. This will deplete your COLA and potentially reduce the amount of boost you receive.

If that’s an issue for you, you may need to be mentally prepared for changes in your personal financial situation. That might mean cutting back on spending or going back to work. The good news is that, as we’ll discuss, working while receiving Social Security benefits will be easier in the new year.

2. Revenue testing limits increase

If you’re working while receiving Social Security and you’re of retirement age, you don’t have to worry about earning too much and having your benefits withheld. However, if you work and receive benefits before you reach full retirement age, you are subject to a Social Security means test. And if you exceed the limits that apply to you, your benefits will be withheld.

In 2026, the general earnings test limit increases from $23,400 to $24,480. From there, $1 of Social Security is deducted for every $2 of your income.

Next year, income test limits for people reaching full retirement age will be significantly increased. Increase from $62,160 to $65,160. From there, $1 of Social Security is deducted for every $3 of your income.

3. The cap on monthly social security benefits will be increased.

Social Security pays maximum benefits to retirees. In 2026, the maximum monthly benefit at full retirement age increases from $4,018 to $4,152.

However, you can delay enrolling in Social Security past full retirement age to get a larger monthly check. For those who delayed the maximum amount (i.e. until age 70), the maximum benefit amount in 2026 is $5,251.

4. Wage ceilings are being raised.

The reason Social Security has a cap on monthly benefits is because it also limits the amount of wages that are taxed each year. Still, the program’s wage cap will rise from $176,100 in 2025 to $184,500 in 2026.

Therefore, higher income earners will have to pay more into the system. Keep this in mind if you are self-employed and cannot split your Social Security taxes 50/50 with an employer who takes half.

5. Work credits are more valuable

You might think that everyone can collect Social Security once they reach a certain age. But these benefits come from working and paying into the system. When you earn wages, you receive labor units. You need 40 of them to qualify for retirement benefits from Social Security, and you can collect up to four work credits per year.

In 2026, the value of one Social Security work credit will increase from $1,810 to $1,890. If you only work part-time, this is a change to be aware of.

Don’t get caught unprepared

There’s obviously a lot going on with Social Security in the new year. Read about these changes now so you’re not surprised when 2026 rolls around.
