The Trump administration must fund the CFPB, the judge said. Here’s why:

0

play

A federal judge on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump’s administration’s argument that the agency is legally barred from funding the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, noting that a court order already prohibits the administration from shutting down the agency.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s ruling comes as the CFPB faces an impending depletion of funding. The Trump administration has refused to provide additional funding to the CFPB since taking control of it in February.

Officials say the bank could run out of cash by early 2026. Representatives from the Trump administration and the CFPB did not respond to requests for comment.

Supporters say CFPB protects consumers

Supporters of the agency argue that without it, the public would be more exposed to predatory lending practices, fraud and other abuses. Mr. Trump and others have denounced it as politicized enforcement and called it a burden on free enterprise.

“For nearly a year, the Trump administration has been trying to water down the CFPB at the expense of ordinary Americans,” Erin Witte, director of consumer protection for the Consumer Federation of America, told USA TODAY. “In a recent attempt, the CFPB, led by President Trump, made a disingenuous attempt to claim that CFPB funding could not be solicited, an effort that was summarily rejected by a federal judge.”

The agency was established after the 2008 financial crisis to protect consumers of financial services. Last month, the agency issued an administrative legal opinion stating that under the CFPB’s governing laws, the central bank cannot seek additional funds from the Federal Reserve as long as it is losing money.

In a ruling Tuesday, Judge Berman Jackson rejected this as a results-oriented inference with no legal basis and said it violates a March injunction that blocked the government shutdown as long as the case is heard in court.

“Defendants’ new understanding of ‘total revenue’ appears to be an unsubstantiated and transparent attempt to accomplish the very purpose the court’s injunction was designed to prevent,” she wrote, adding that the administration’s “unilateral decision” to deny further funding from the CFPB is therefore a violation.

Witte added: “Mr. Jackson’s order makes it abundantly clear (again) that the CFPB must meet its obligations pursuant to Congressional orders, including maintaining a consumer complaint database, and cannot rely on this flawed argument to escape its obligations.”

“We are glad that the court is enforcing the actual law, not (CFPB Acting Director Russell) Vought’s flawed interpretation of the law,” she said.

Unlike many federal agencies, the CFPB is funded by the Federal Reserve System rather than by a budget set annually by Congress. But the CFPB could face tighter funding constraints anyway, as lawmakers reduced the CFPB’s allowable funding cap this year.

SNAP will soon ban soda and candy. Which states are affected?

0

The changes come months after Trump administration officials promised changes to the long-standing food assistance program. At least 18 states plan to make changes in 2026, according to the USDA.

play

Millions of SNAP recipients are about to face new restrictions on what they can buy with the federal assistance program, including bans on soda, energy drinks and candy, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

At least 18 states plan to implement changes to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the new year, according to the USDA. First, in January, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia.

The remaining 13 states plan to make changes by the end of the year.

“The Trump Administration is leading bold reforms to strengthen the integrity and restore the nutritional value of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” the USDA said in a statement about the upcoming changes.

The agency said the move “gives states more flexibility in administering their programs” by restricting “non-nutritious items such as soda and candy.”

“These waivers are an important step in ensuring that taxpayer dollars provide nutritious options that improve health outcomes within SNAP,” the USDA said.

The changes to the food assistance program come months after Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a leading advocate of the “Make America Healthy” movement, suggested working with Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins to limit access to certain foods under SNAP.

President Kennedy said in early 2025, “Every American who wants a donut should be able to eat a donut and drink a Coke.” “But federal taxpayers shouldn’t be paying to poison children, and we’re going to end it.”

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes.

Which states will be affected and when?

At least 18 states plan to implement changes to SNAP in 2026, according to the USDA.

Starting Thursday, Jan. 1, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah and West Virginia will limit the products people can buy, according to the USDA.

The changes to SNAP will make it nearly impossible for people to use the program to purchase sodas, soft drinks, or “sweetened beverages.” Changes vary by state.

Idaho, Oklahoma and Louisiana will change what SNAP recipients can purchase in February. Colorado in March. Texas, Virginia, and Florida in April. Arkansas and Tennessee in July. Hawaii and South Carolina in August. North Dakota in September. and Missouri in October.

What kind of food is served?

Changes to what people can buy with SNAP benefits will be widespread everywhere.

Iowa changed its program from allowing aid money to be used to purchase “any food or grocery item for home consumption” to items subject to sales tax in the state, according to a letter from the Department of Agriculture to Iowa Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Larry Johnson.

Under the new restrictions, SNAP benefits can no longer be used to buy candy, including gum and mints. Sweet drinks containing Hi-C. Trail mix containing chocolate and candy. and cooked food.

According to a USDA letter to Gov. Mike Brown, SNAP recipients in Indiana will be prohibited from spending program funds on soft drinks or candy, defined as “any combination of sugar, honey, or other natural or artificial sweeteners with chocolate, fruit, nuts, or other ingredients or flavorings in the form of bars, drops, or pieces.”

According to the USDA, Nebraska’s changes will prevent SNAP recipients in the state from using program funds to purchase energy drinks.

What are the arguments on both sides of this issue?

Supporters of the new restrictions say they encourage healthy eating habits.

“With skyrocketing obesity rates, our nation and our state are at a crossroads,” Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said in May, after first approving SNAP changes requested by the Department of Agriculture. “Changes are needed to promote healthy eating habits, protect future generations from disease, and ensure SNAP can fulfill its core function.”

Critics argue that this restriction will harm people.

“These restrictions do nothing to make healthy food more affordable,” Luke Elzinga and Gina Plata Nino of the Food Action and Research Center said in a statement. “Rather, it will increase stigma against SNAP participants, cause confusion at checkout counters, and raise the price of groceries for all of us.”

Recipients of the program are also on guard.

“I feel the same way. I want to eat vegetables, I want to eat burgers, but I can’t store them,” Mark Craig, an unhoused Iowa resident, told USA TODAY Network’s Des Moines Register. “And if you’re in a shelter, you can’t bring in food from outside.”

How many people will be affected?

Millions of SNAP recipients in 18 states will be affected by the program changes.

Across the five states with new restrictions, about 1.4 million people will see benefits changes in January, according to an analysis of data by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

About 13 million people in 18 states will see changes to their benefits in 2026, according to data from the Budget Policy Center, a nonpartisan research organization.

According to the center, approximately 41 million people will be using SNAP in 2024, making it the most important food assistance program in the nation.

When did the SNAP program begin?

According to the USDA, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program dates back to 1939, when the federal agency began issuing food stamps at the end of the Great Depression.

The early food stamp program ended in 1943, according to agency history. According to the USDA, President John F. Kennedy launched a new food stamp pilot program in 1961.

President Lyndon B. Johnson made the program permanent with the Food Stamp Act of 1964.

SNAP became the name of the program through the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, which overrode President George W. Bush’s veto.

Why did Trump publicly promote a secret CIA-led attack on Venezuela?

0

play

President Donald Trump this week boasted about the first U.S.-reported ground attack on Venezuela, overlooking a CIA-led operation that retired intelligence experts said was an unusual move.

Although the United States has carried out covert invasions in Latin America in the past, it is unusual for a U.S. official, let alone a president, to publicly acknowledge them, former CIA and military intelligence officials told USA TODAY. The CIA has historically conducted covert operations to avoid public knowledge.

Rick de la Torre, a former CIA Latin America chief, said that for President Trump to mention the attack, as he did twice this week, would send a “serious message to President (Nicolas) Maduro” that “the United States can reach out and touch him if it wants to.”

President Trump first mentioned the attack in a Dec. 26 WABC radio interview, in which he said two days earlier that the U.S. had “destroyed” a “large facility where ships come from,” but did not say where the attack took place. Pressed on the matter by reporters at a Dec. 29 event at Mar-a-Lago with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the U.S. had attacked “the area of the pier where drugs are loaded onto boats.”

“It hit all the boats and has now reached the execution area,” he said.

First CNN and then The New York Times reported later that day that the CIA carried out a drone attack in December against a pier in Venezuela that the United States suspected of being used by the gangster Torren de Aragua to load drugs onto boats. The Trump administration designated Torren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization.

U.S. government agencies have not confirmed whether the operation took place. The CIA declined to comment, and the Pentagon referred questions to the White House. The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

President Trump talks about other covert operations in South America

This month is not the first time President Trump has publicly discussed the CIA’s actions in Venezuela. He informed reporters in October that he had authorized the CIA to operate in the country.

The Trump administration has waged much of its campaign to remove President Maduro from power in public. Retired intelligence officials characterized these announcements as a psychological operation intended to signal to Venezuela’s leaders and those around them that the United States was under siege.

Bird’s-eye video footage of more than 20 U.S. ship attacks in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific that killed more than 100 people has been shared by government authorities and official military social media accounts. Video shows the boat being consumed by smoke and flames.

The exception is a second attack on a boat on Sept. 2 that left the sailor killed and two survivors shown dead, according to lawmakers. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth viewed the unedited video and said it would not be released to the public despite requests from Democratic lawmakers who called the second attack disturbing and morally unjustified.

Trump administration officials also posted videos on social media of the seizure of two oil tankers off the coast of Venezuela earlier this month. The first video showed American soldiers descending from helicopters and attacking the ship. A second, more than seven-minute video posted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem showed the helicopter descending onto the tanker from multiple angles.

“Shadow and Mirror”

Retired CIA and military intelligence officials told USA TODAY that President Trump’s disclosures about covert operations in Venezuela were likely intended to signal to Mr. Maduro and his allies that the United States was prepared to escalate the conflict.

“It’s all shadows and mirrors,” said Mr. de la Torre, former Latin America bureau chief.

Still, Delatorre said it’s unclear what President Trump’s recent announcements have achieved. He said Maduro must already “suspect that U.S. special forces and the (intelligence) community are actively conducting operations against him and his regime.”

Christopher Costa, a former military intelligence officer and senior counterterrorism official during Trump’s first term, said it was the president’s “prerogative” to announce operations.

“This remains another way of telling President Maduro: It’s time for him to resign,” added Costa, who is now executive director of the International Spy Museum.

Costa said it was unlikely that any government agency would confirm Trump’s attack announcement because it falls under the president’s legal authority to order covert operations, unlike traditional military operations conducted by the Pentagon.

He said that for President Trump, “covert action is seen as a third option” alongside diplomacy and military action.

Seth Krumrich, a former special operations Army colonel and current vice president of the security firm Global Guardian, said it was “really unusual” for a president to announce a covert operation.

Covert operations do not have the same surveillance requirements as traditional military operations. These are triggered by directives called “Presidential Observations” and reported through the Congressional Intelligence Committees. They also include the possibility of plausible deniability, meaning that if they come to light, the U.S. government is under no legal obligation to admit involvement.

Krumlich said Trump’s choice was noteworthy: “The whole point of[these secret CIA agencies]is that they can’t be held accountable.”

Department of Health and Human Services freezes child care payments to Minnesota due to ‘clear fraud’

0

The Department of Health and Human Services has froze child care payments to Minnesota following fraud at a child care center and tightened restrictions on other payments nationwide.

Jim O’Neill, deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a Tuesday, Dec. 30, post to

“We’re turning off the money and uncovering fraud,” said O’Neill, who is also acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The department froze all state payments to the Department of Children and Families and activated what O’Neill called a “spending defense system.”

“Starting today, all ACF payments across the country will require a valid reason and receipt or photographic evidence before being sent to the state,” he said.

Assistant Secretary of State Alex Adams said in an accompanying video that he spoke with the “Director of the Minnesota Department of Child Care” and claimed that he “could not say with confidence” whether the fraud allegations were “isolated or widespread across the state.”

Adams did not reveal the director’s name. USA TODAY contacted the Department of Health and Human Services to find out who Adams spoke with, and the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families to confirm whether the call was made.

Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s office said in a statement to USA TODAY that “while the president has released fraudsters from prison, the governor has been fighting fraud for years,” calling the move “a clear attempt to politicize the issue to the detriment of Minnesotans and defunding government programs.”

Report adds context to conservative influencer videos

O’Neill also pointed to a video of conservative influencer Nick Shirley claiming it was an abandoned daycare center and called for an investigation into it.

The video shows Shirley visiting multiple child care centers in Minnesota that the narrator says are abandoned despite being licensed to serve dozens of children and receiving public funding.

CBS News, citing state records, reported that all but two of the locations Shirley mentioned had valid licenses, and all active locations had been visited by state regulators within the past six months. One was visited by the state on Dec. 4, the network said.

The report cited the daycare’s safety, cleanliness, equipment, staff training and other violations, but said there was “no evidence of wrongdoing documented.”

Tikki Brown, secretary of the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families, told CBS News that the agency is “questioning some of the methods used in the video,” but said the agency “takes the fraud charges very seriously.”

Two of the Minneapolis centers featured in the video closed this year, Brown said at a news conference Monday, Dec. 29, but a department spokesperson later told the Minnesota Star Tribune that one of the centers “has decided to remain open.”

Zach Osman, the manager of the Minnesota Child Care Center where Shirley was last seen in the video, told the newspaper that the center’s doors are locked at all times for safety reasons, “walk-in appointments” are not allowed, and staff are on “high alert” following President Donald Trump’s anti-Somali comments.

The children were inside the center when Shirley was there, but “no one was visible from the outside,” Osman said, adding that state officials visited the center for the fifth time this year on Dec. 29, after the video was posted.

Shirley has been criticized for publishing false information. For example, Shirley’s recent viral video claimed that the Minnesota flag was altered to resemble the Somali flag. The flag’s designer and an expert adviser on the redesign told Reuters last year that the flag has nothing to do with Somalia.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

More than 100 people infected with gastrointestinal illness on celebrity cruise

A recent outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on board Celebrity Cruises affected more than 100 people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95 of the Celebrity Eclipse’s 3,042 passengers, along with nine crew members, reported feeling ill during the voyage, which ended Dec. 28. Their main symptoms were vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Health authorities say the causative agent is unknown. According to Cruise Mapper, the ship was on an eight-day Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale at the time.

According to the CDC, cruise lines have implemented enhanced disinfection and cleaning measures, isolated sick passengers and employees, and taken other steps. Celebrities did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment.

The CDC has recorded 22 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships this year that met the criteria for publication, 16 of which were caused by norovirus. The disease caused 15 of a total of 18 outbreaks in 2024 and 13 of 14 in the previous year.

The disease is often associated with cruise ships, but that accounts for only 1% of reported outbreaks.

“(Epidemics) often happen within communities, and we often don’t realize it’s happening,” Sarah R. Michaels, an assistant professor at Tulane University’s Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, previously told USA TODAY. “In fact, areas where people are in close contact, such as day care facilities, nursing homes, and cruise ships, are more likely to be diagnosed, reported, and brought to our attention.”

Why the ball in Times Square will fall twice in 2026

0

For the first time ever, New York’s historic New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, an annual spectacle in Times Square since 1907, will be held twice in one year.

The Constellation Ball, the ninth and largest version of the New Year’s Eve sphere, will be lit on Tuesday, Dec. 30, and sent to a 139-foot pole atop the building at One Times Square.

Look at the test: A state of ball drop.

learn more: Drop a quirky New Year’s Eve tradition.

At 11:59 p.m. ET, the 12 1/2-foot tall, 12,350-pound ball will descend in 60 seconds, ushering in the new year. But that’s not all.

At 12:04 a.m., the ball will be relit in the red, white and blue design of “America 250,” a bipartisan commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, and will fall on July 4 to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

This is the first time that the ball has fallen twice in one year.

“America 250 will kick off its semi-quincentennial anniversary on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, the most watched celebration on earth, marking the year that the largest and most moving celebration and commemoration in our nation’s history is underway in 2026,” America 250 President Rosie Rios said in a statement.

New Year’s Eve Ball Mechanism

How did the Times Square Ball evolve?

Balls are regularly redesigned and new technology is incorporated. Since 2009, the ball has been a permanent fixture at the top of One Times Square year-round. It serves as a Manhattan landmark and tourist attraction.

When did New Year’s Eve traditions begin?

Times Square has celebrated the New Year for 122 years, ever since 1904, when The New York Times’ owners held a fireworks display at their new headquarters.

When fireworks were restricted, organizers used lighted spheres for New Year’s celebrations in Times Square. They are based on the so-called chronograph spheres, or time balls, used by sailors in the 1800s to set ships’ clocks and navigational instruments.

The Times Square Ball will be lit twice this year, but was left dark twice during World War II. Due to wartime blackout regulations, the lights were not turned on or off on New Year’s Eve in 1942 and 1943.

X and First Amendment battle over transgender bathroom photos in Texas

0

play

  • In 2023, Michelle Evans posted a photo of a transgender politician in a women’s restroom, sparking an investigation under a state law that prohibits the distribution of images taken in restrooms without consent.
  • Evans filed a lawsuit over the issue, arguing in part that the First Amendment protects her right to post images. Both the district court and appellate courts ruled against Evans.
  • X, which has previously been involved in First Amendment litigation, said it was “proud to support” Evans and would seek review by the full court.

Elon Musk’s social media platform

Michelle Evans, chair of the Williamson County Republican Party, posted a photo of a transgender activist who had announced a potential run for the Texas Legislature in a women’s restroom on the day a gender transition bill was debated at the state Capitol in May 2023, according to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.

The move sparked an investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, which led Evans to turn over his cellphone to authorities, which led to a partial First Amendment lawsuit. A three-judge panel from the District Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals both denied Evans’ request for a preliminary injunction, allowing the investigation to continue as the case progresses.

The state law regulating “invasive video recordings” was first enacted in 2001, but has been amended several times in the years since. The latest version, which went into effect in September, prohibits video recording without people’s consent in “places where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy” such as bathrooms, bedrooms and changing rooms.

Company X’s Global Government Affairs team said in a statement on Monday, Dec. 29, that it was “proud” of Mr. Evans’ case. He called the commission’s decision “misguided and dangerous” and said he would seek an appeal to the full Court of Appeal.

“We look forward to the entire Fifth Circuit correcting this wrong and upholding free speech, the foundation of American democracy,” the company said in a statement.

X’s announcement comes days after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a tip to report violations of a state law that requires government buildings to restrict access to restroom facilities based on biological sex.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Ms. Evans said she was “grateful” for Mr.

Tony McDonald, an attorney representing Evans, said this is an “important First Amendment case” and that he is “excited that Company X has joined the fight to protect Mrs. Evans’ right to free speech.”

Prosecutors in Travis County, including Austin, balked at X’s involvement.

“Of course, under the leadership of Elon Musk, X supports users posting photos of other users in the bathroom without their consent,” the office said in a statement.

USA TODAY has reached out to the activist and X for comment.

Investigation based on the law prohibiting the taking of images without consent in restrooms

According to the complaint, Evans did not take the photo in question. She said she saw the photo on Facebook, copied it and posted it to her X account.

The post quickly attracted attention and complaints from people who believed Evans had taken the photo. According to the complaint, Department of Public Safety officials detained Evans for questioning shortly before the vote on Senate Bill 14, which banned gender-affirming health care for transgender youth, was finally passed.

After Evans handed over his cellphone, he was told he could only leave if he left, according to the complaint.

Department of Public Safety officials later told Evans in the complaint that Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza ordered the investigation, citing a Texas law that prohibits distributing images of people in a restroom “without the other person’s consent and with the intent to violate the other person’s privacy.”

Evans sued Garza in this case in her official capacity as district attorney, arguing in part that the First Amendment “protects the right of Texans to speak on matters of public concern,” which she said applies to her case.

First Amendment right to take photos inside restrooms is unclear, court says

The court disagreed.

The district court denied Evans’ request for a preliminary injunction,th The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld this decision in a 2-1 decision.

“It is far from clear that there is a First Amendment right to take and distribute images of fully clothed adults while in a public restroom without their permission,” the court’s Dec. 9 opinion said.

“Is it everyone’s fair right to have their photo or video taken when they’re in the bathroom, celebrity or not?” the opinion read. “Does the fact that the person is an elected official change that equation? The law is certainly not clear that a politician can be pursued for the purpose of gaining and promoting his image, even in a public restroom.”

Similar questions arose in Arizona after a group of activists followed then-Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema into a bathroom at Arizona State University in October 2021. Activists had been at odds with Sinema over her ambivalent stance on then-President Joe Biden’s Recovery and Better Act, The Arizona Republic reported.

The Court of Appeal panel said it was “not clear” whether Ms Evans would ultimately face criminal charges, but said “the threat of prosecution hangs over her”.

X previously sued the state on First Amendment grounds.

This is not the first time Company X has been embroiled in a First Amendment dispute.

In June, the company sued New York state over the No-Hide Hate Act, which requires companies to outline steps they take to combat extremism, disinformation and other potentially harmful content.

Company X argued that the law was unconstitutional because it “unacceptably interferes with the editorial decisions of First Amendment-protected companies…to remove, demonetize, or deprioritize such speech on their platforms.”

The company also reached a settlement with the state of California in February over a similar law.

It also sued the state of Minnesota in April, in part on First Amendment grounds, over a law that makes it illegal to use AI-generated deepfakes to influence elections.

Stefon Diggs charged with strangulation and assault in court

  • New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been charged with a felony count of strangulation and a misdemeanor count of assault.
  • The charges were filed in Dedham District Court on Monday, Dec. 29, following the Dec. 2 incident.
  • Diggs’ attorney requested that the police report be seized and kept sealed.
  • The Patriots organization said it is aware of the allegations, which Diggs denies, and supports him.

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs faces a felony charge of strangulation or suffocation, along with misdemeanor assault, according to online court records reviewed by USA TODAY.

The charges were filed in Dedham District Court on Monday, Dec. 29, and stem from an alleged incident on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

According to Boston 25 News, Diggs’ attorney, Michael DiStefano, filed an appeal for police to suppress the report, arguing during a remote appearance in Dedham District Court that details of the incident report should be sealed.

The Patriots said in a statement that they are aware of the accusations and support Diggs.

“Mr. Stephon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We stand by Mr. Stephon,” the statement said. “We will continue to gather information and cooperate fully with appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all involved and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be commenting further at this time.”

The USA TODAY Network obtained a police report accusing a woman, Diggs’ former personal chef, of slapping Diggs and putting her hands around his neck after an argument over pay at Diggs’ home in Dedham, Massachusetts. The report was filed on Dec. 16, and she initially did not press charges, but did so a week later.

Diggs’ attorney, David Meyer, also reiterated that his client “categorically” denies the charges.

“They are unsubstantiated, unsubstantiated and never investigated because they didn’t happen,” Meyer said in a statement. “The timing and motive of the charges are clear. They are the direct result of a financial dispute between an employee and an employer that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Mr. Stephon looks forward to uncovering the truth in court.”

The incident reportedly occurred the night after the Patriots defeated the New York Giants 33-15 on Monday Night Football on December 1st. The NFL said it was aware of the matter.

Diggs’ girlfriend, singer Cardi B, gave birth to a son in November.

Diggs was scheduled to be arraigned on January 23, 2026, two days after the AFC Championship Game. On December 28th, the Patriots won the AFC East. The judge said he would consider moving the arraignment to March with a motion to seal.

On the field, Diggs has become a reliable target for second-year QB Drake Maye. The University of Maryland product had 82 receptions, 970 yards and four touchdowns in his first season in New England.

Actor separates from girlfriend Rosalind Ross

0

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have announced that their 10-year romance has ended.

Gibson and Ross, who began dating in 2014, broke up about a year ago, the former couple revealed in a statement to People magazine published Tuesday, Dec. 30. The reason for the breakup has not been disclosed.

Gibson’s rep also confirmed the actor’s separation from Ross to USA TODAY.

“While we are sad to see this chapter of our lives come to an end, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents we can be,” Gibson and Ross told People magazine. Gibson, a father of nine, has an eight-year-old son, Lars, with Ross.

Gibson was previously married to Robin Dennis Moore, whom he met in the late ’70s shortly after filming the action movie Mad Max. The couple had seven children but separated in 2006 after 26 years of marriage.

The Oscar-winning actor then dated Russian singer-songwriter Oksana Grigorieva from 2007 to 2010, and they welcomed Gibson’s eighth daughter together in 2009.

Gibson opened up about his relationship with Ross, including their 34-year age difference, in a 2016 interview with the Mirror. The 60-year-old actor was dating Ross, 26, at the time.

“When it comes to age and relationship status, it’s just a number,” Gibson said at the time. “She’s an adult and we’re all very competitive with each other. That can cause problems and some people are nervous about things like that, but it’s working out really well. She’s a really special person.”

The couple’s chemistry was also reflected on the silver screen.

Gibson starred in the 2022 sports drama Father Stu, which was written and directed by Ross. The film, which also starred Mark Wahlberg, Jacki Weaver, and Teresa Lewis, grossed $21.6 million worldwide.

Too many meetings? Try these four tips to clear out your calendar.

0

play

The conference took over Bob Jordan’s calendar. Now, Southwest Airlines’ CEO is taking action on the issue.

He closes his calendar three afternoons a week to avoid back-to-back meetings that take him away from important tasks that only a CEO can handle.

“I think when you’re first starting out, it’s easy to confuse being busy with going to meetings with leaders,” Jordan said during a roundtable discussion at the New York Times’ Dealbook Summit earlier this month. “What I’m trying to do in 2026, and you guys will think I’m crazy… is to be completely open Wednesday through Friday afternoons.”

“What’s it for? To work on what needs to be worked on, to think about what’s important right now, to call people to talk to,” Jordan said. “Because I’m convinced that everyone doesn’t have time for ‘work’ and confuses going to meetings with work.”

How meetings took over the calendar

Whether it’s one-on-one meetings, all-hands meetings, Zoom or Teams meetings, meeting bloat continues to clog calendars. Unnecessary meetings—ones with too many people and no clear purpose, ones that keep drones running for too long, go off topic, or devolve into gripe sessions—lead to exhaustion for already overscheduled employees, lower productivity, and dissatisfaction at the top of the office. According to SurveyMonkey research, employees are most frustrated by meetings that may have taken place via email or text.

For years, administrators have tried to control the flow of out-of-control meetings by tightening agendas and shortening meeting times. They have held standing meetings, walks and talks. They even encourage people to drink a glass of water beforehand and let nature take its course. But workplace observers say the frequency of meetings, which increased during the pandemic, continues to increase.

According to Philip Arcole, founder of Worklytics, people spend more than half of their meeting time multitasking, and one-third of attendees don’t speak at all.

“Meeting hygiene is a matter of organizational design, not just an individual productivity preference,” said Future of Work strategist Stephanie Fraone in a post on LinkedIn. “Meetings are incredibly valuable for coordination, decision-making, and relationships. But without intention, structure, and standards, they risk crowding out the work they are meant to support.”

Meetings take up your most productive time

Due to hiring freezes and layoffs, many employees are already juggling multiple people’s jobs, not to mention dealing with constant messages and other interruptions.

The more time you spend in meetings, the less time you spend doing “deep work” or focusing without distractions.

Microsoft workplace research shows that the most productive parts of your workday are often hijacked by other people’s schedules.

Half of all meetings take place between 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., when circadian rhythms naturally make most people more productive. More than half of all meetings are ad hoc calls without a calendar invite, and 1 in 10 meetings are scheduled at the last minute.

Employees say their days are getting longer and their days getting darker on weekends because they’re inundated with meeting invitations, forcing them to work early or stay late to pursue tasks that require a higher level of concentration. According to Microsoft, meetings held after 8 p.m. are up 16% year over year.

According to Microsoft’s Work Trends Index study, “For many people, the workday now feels like a whirlwind of chaos, reacting to other people’s priorities and losing focus on what matters most.” “In a time when every moment counts, that drift can quietly drain your energy and slow your business progress.”

4 tips for hosting a great meeting

Benjamin Laker, a leadership professor at the University of Reading’s Henley Business School, and his colleagues studied the impact of meetings on productivity and found that a 40% reduction in meetings led to a 71% increase in employee productivity.

Not all meetings are bad, Laker said. In fact, they can be essential for collaboration and innovation.

“Meetings are a great way for teams to come together, exchange ideas and work towards a common goal,” Laker told USA TODAY in 2023.

We asked Laker for some tips on how to conduct a proper meeting. he said:

Before scheduling meetings, determine the purpose of each meeting. Make sure your goals are clearly defined.

Ask yourself if you can communicate the information in another way, such as email, Slack, or Teams messages.

Keep meetings short and focused. Schedule the meeting for as long as you need and make sure everyone sticks to the agenda.

Limit the number of people attending the meeting and only include those who need to be there.

U.S. Postal Service changes postmark rules. What you need to know now

0

The U.S. Postal Service’s new postmark process can result in late fees and penalties when mailing time-sensitive documents.

play

The U.S. Postal Service plans to make new changes in 2026, including adjustments to the postmark process, which could result in late fees and penalties for people mailing time-sensitive documents like tax returns and bill payments.

Postmarks, the official mark of when and where a piece of mail was accepted by the post office, have been used by law for decades to prove that individuals have met deadlines, such as submitting a ballot by Election Day.

The USPS postmark is used to indicate the date a piece of mail was placed in your mailbox or submitted to a post office counter. Now, the USPS is clarifying in new rules that the postmark will reflect the date the envelope was first processed by a USPS automatic sorter, sometimes several days after it was mailed, rather than the actual mailing date.

The changes to USPS are part of the Delivering For America initiative, which includes consolidating mail processing and modernizing infrastructure for a time when the volume of paper letters is decreasing and the number of packages is increasing.

How will the new postmark rules affect my email?

For a long time, Americans thought their mail was postmarked the same day it was posted, and they may not be prepared to account for the extra days.

Tax payments, charitable contributions, legal filings, rent payments, and other invoices and items that rely on postmarks on deadlines can be affected by later postmarks and risk late fees, penalties, or late payments.

Many states also accept ballots postmarked by Election Day.

Time-sensitive mailings should be mailed several days before the deadline. You can also go to your local post office and ask for a handwritten “manual postmark” on the date, or use certified mail.

When will USPS postage rates increase and how much will they cost?

The price of First Class Postage stamps, currently $0.78, is not expected to increase at this time, but Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select shipping costs are all expected to increase in the new year.

USPS shipping rate increases are scheduled to go into effect on January 18th. Prices are based on the weight of the package and the distance it will be shipped.

  • Priority Mail prices start at $10.45 per package, and flat rate Priority Mail envelopes start at $11.90. An increase of 6.6% is expected.
  • Priority Mail Express packages start at $32.50 and flat rate envelopes start at $33.40. An increase of 5.1% is expected.
  • USPS Ground Advantage starts at $7.20 and is expected to increase by 7.8%.
  • Parcel Select is expected to increase by 6%.

Standard first class postage for stamps is $0.78 for the first ounce and increases by $0.29 for each additional ounce. This price has been in effect since July 2025 and is not scheduled to increase in January. The next price change is expected in mid-2026.

Promoting modernization

Modernization of the post office is also progressing towards the new year.

The USPS announced that redesigned, technology-advanced lobbies will be installed at retail stores nationwide as part of its modernization drive. Officials say this will make it faster and easier for customers to visit the post office, making it more convenient to send and receive mail.

“Modernizing our retail space means meeting our customers where they are,” Tracy Raymond, director of retail operations, said in a news release. “People expect speed, clarity and technology-driven convenience. That’s what our new lobby provides, while also providing the trusted face-to-face interaction that is the hallmark of the Postal Service.”

The upgraded post office lobby will feature 24/7 smart lockers, enhanced self-service kiosks, the Rapid Drop mobile app, digital information displays and a streamlined layout. It will also offer options for government service hubs such as passports, fingerprint recognition, and identity verification.

HomeSafe’s main drawback is that it uses a third-party provider to process claims. For many homeowners, this is not a hindrance to the claims process, but we prefer home warranty companies to handle this in-house to avoid delays caused by intermediaries.

If you want a provider that handles everything in-house and has competitive coverage, consider Liberty Home Guard or American Home Shield.

HomeSafe plans and pricing

HomeSafe plans cost more than the average home warranty, but they make up for this additional cost with higher coverage limits and lower service fees.

HomeSafe has an annual coverage limit of $10,000, but individual coverage limits range from $2,000 to $5,000 per item. This level of coverage is generous and higher than our competitors’ limits.

HomeSafe’s service fees are as low as $65 per service, so even if you end up making multiple claims, the protection plan is well worth it.

Plan name coverage average cost coverage cap
Critical protection (system) Air conditioning, heating, electricity, plumbing, water heater, hot/cold water dispenser, garbage disposal, central vacuum cleaner, smoke detector, ceiling fan, doorbell $69/month $3,000 per system ($5,000 for 5 ton HVAC unit)
Expansion necessities (appliances) Refrigerator, ice maker/freezer, washer, dryer, dishwasher, trash compactor, range/oven/stove/cooktop, built-in microwave, built-in food center, garage door opener $69/month $2,000 per appliance
Best Home (fully insured) Everything included in Essential Protection and Extended Essentials $79/month $3,000 per system ($5,000 for 5 ton HVAC unit). $2,000 per appliance

home safe discount

HomeSafe doesn’t offer any special discounts, but you can expect your quoted price to stay the same as long as you stick with your plan. The advantage is that costs remain stable, as some providers raise their prices every year.

HomeSafe add-on coverage

HomeSafe provides additional coverage for seven areas, including areas you rarely see, such as your in-law suite and wine cellar. The monthly pricing for these add-ons is highly customized, so you’ll need to contact HomeSafe for a quote.

  • guest house
  • Guest unit/in-law suite
  • Pool & Spa
  • purification system
  • water softener
  • well pump
  • Wine room/wine cellar

Across the home warranty industry, septic system and well pump coverage can add an average of $5 to $10 per month, and pool and spa coverage can range from $8 each to more than $25 per month for the two together. HomeSafe’s add-ons likely fall within these ranges.

How to file a claim with HomeSafe

If you file a claim with HomeSafe, the warranty provider will require you to take immediate action to prevent further damage. HomeSafe uses third-party providers to process claims, so you will contact Armis, LLC to submit your claim.

  1. Call your HomeSafe claims administrator Use the customer service number in your warranty plan or go online and submit a claim form.
  2. If your appliance or system is covered, pay service fee.
  3. HomeSafe will direct you to a service technician or allow you to contact one of our service technicians. You need to set a schedule. HomeSafe does not facilitate.
  4. A repair technician will come to your home Diagnose the problem.
  5. If the repair is covered by warranty, a service technician can: complete the repair On the spot. Or you can order parts and complete them later.
  6. If your breakdown isn’t covered, you can request a second opinion from another provider within 7 days.

HomeSafe has a 20-day waiting period that must be completed before a claim can be filed. This is shorter than the average of 30 days. This means you can start billing sooner than with other providers.

HomeSafe rating by USA TODAY

USA TODAY’s editorial team uses an in-house methodology to rank home warranty providers like HomeSafe. We review 20 provider contracts to create our top 10 list. Criteria used to determine the list include plan options, coverage details, price, quality of service, customer satisfaction, and reliability.

Bottom line: Is HomeSafe right for you?

If you want a great home warranty with high coverage limits and low fees when making a claim, HomeSafe is a solid choice. Their plans may be a little more expensive than the industry average, but their coverage makes up for it.

However, using a third party for billing processing can complicate matters. It’s also your responsibility to schedule a service technician, rather than the company sending someone to your home to handle the logistics. Other providers, such as American Home Shield, process claims in-house, making the process smoother.

Tatiana Schlossberg died several months after revealing her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia in an essay for The New Yorker.

Tatiana Schlossberg, environmental journalist, author, and granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy, has died. She was 35 years old.

Her death was confirmed on Dec. 30 by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides funding and staffing for former presidents’ libraries.

“She will always be in our hearts,” her parents, siblings, husband and children said in an Instagram post.

Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and designer Edwin Schlossberg, revealed in a Nov. 22 New Yorker essay that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Schlossberg wrote that after giving birth to her second child in May 2024, she learned she had acute myeloid leukemia and that her doctor noticed an imbalance in her white blood cell count.

In her essay, Schlossberg described how she and her family coped with the diagnosis. She said she tried to be with her children, even when it was difficult.

“All my life, I have tried to be a good student, a good sister, a good daughter, to protect my mother, to never upset or anger her,” she wrote. “Now I have added another tragedy to her life and the life of our family. There is nothing I can do to stop it.”

Schlossberg was married to George Moran, a physician at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. The couple met at Yale University and married in 2017 on the Kennedy family estate on Martha’s Vineyard. The couple have two children.

Her siblings include Rose Kennedy Schlossberg and Jack Schlossberg, who recently announced their candidacy for New York Congress.

In an essay for The New Yorker, Schlossberg wrote about the confirmation of his cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and how healthcare has changed rapidly as a result. The Kennedy family argued against his selection.

“I watched from my hospital bed as Bobby used logic and common sense to land the job, even though he had never worked in medicine, public health, or government,” she wrote. “Suddenly, the health care system I relied on felt strained and unstable. Doctors and scientists at Columbia University, including George, didn’t know if they would be able to continue their research or even work.”

career in journalism

A graduate of Yale University, Schlossberg earned a master’s degree in U.S. history from Oxford University.

Her reporting career includes work at news organizations such as the New York Times and The Record/NorthJersey.com, part of the USA TODAY network in New Jersey. She writes about climate and environmental issues and is the author of Conspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Didn’t Know.
