Want the latest information on the Artemis II moon mission?

NASA’s flight tracker lets you follow the four astronauts of the Artemis II mission as they make their way to the moon.

After a successful launch from Florida on April 1, the Artemis II mission was more than 70,000 miles from Earth as of 6 a.m. Friday, April 3.

NASA has a website and app to help keep track of everyone during the 10-day mission that sends astronauts to the far side of the moon and back.

Artemis II Tracker. Track moon missions in real time

NASA’s online tracker (available on both desktop and mobile apps) lets you follow the Artemis II astronauts as they adventure to and around the moon aboard the Orion crew capsule.

Officially called the Artemis Real-time Orbit Website (AROW), the tracker allows users to see where the Orion spacecraft is and how fast it’s traveling, as well as its distance from both Earth and the moon in miles, NASA said.

The desktop website version’s interface includes major mission milestones and features for the Moon, including information about Apollo-era landing sites. The mobile version of NASA’s app for smartphones is similar, but adds an augmented reality feature that allows users to move their phone to see where Orion is currently positioned relative to Earth.

Download the app to your smartphone from here.

Data is collected in real time by Orion’s sensors and transmitted to the Mission Control Center at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. That information will be constantly updated throughout the 10-day mission.

Artemis II Mission: Where is the Orion Capsule now?

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. on April 3, the astronauts were more than 72,000 miles from Earth.

One day and 11 hours into their 10-day mission, the astronauts are traveling at 4,880 miles per hour and have just over 180,000 miles left to reach the moon.

FTC reports $15.9 billion stolen in 2025 through consumer fraud

  • What form of fraud occurs most often? Someone pretends to be someone else—FBI, FTC, IRS, your bank, your grandchild, the new love of your life.
  • The Federal Trade Commission said the spike in lost dollars may be due to a “sudden increase in consumers reporting large losses of $100,000 or more.”

The billions of dollars lost to fraud continue to add up.

Fraudsters and fraudsters stole a record $15.9 billion through various scams in 2025, up from $12.5 billion in 2024, according to the latest data from the Federal Trade Commission.

According to the FTC, the largest number of losses in 2025 ($7.9 billion, nearly half of all reported losses) involved some type of investment fraud.

Lois Greisman, associate director of the FTC’s Division of Marketing Practices, made these bombshell statements in testimony before the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, March 25th.

In his testimony, Greisman noted that reported fraud losses have increased by nearly 430% since 2020.

Greisman said the FTC will receive 3 million fraud reports from consumers in 2025, a significant increase from the 2.6 million fraud reports it received in 2024.

Scammers trick us into pretending to be someone else

What form of fraud occurs most often? Someone pretends to be someone else—FBI, FTC, IRS, your bank, your grandchild, the local sheriff, the new love of your life.

The FTC has received more than 1 million reports of identity fraud, and consumers have reported losses of more than $3.5 billion.

How do scammers reach out?

Often via a simple text message, this was the top contact method reported by consumers when they identified a connection to a scammer in the 2025 Fraud Report.

Social media is said to be the most common communication method for reported losses. In 2025, consumers reported more than $2 billion in total losses claiming fraud started on social media.

In a June 2025 warning, the FTC warned that if a new friend you met on social media asks you for money, it’s often a complete scam.

“When asking for money, these scammers often offer instructions on how to send the money,” according to a previous FTC warning. “People are reporting that scammers have instructed them to transfer money through companies like Western Union or MoneyGram, send a number on a gift card, use a payment app, or send cryptocurrency.”

Although the testimonies do not specifically mention Bitcoin ATMs such as those at grocery stores or liquor stores, consumers continue to be told by scammers to withdraw cash from their bank accounts and deposit it at a Bitcoin ATM near their home. That money then often ends up in the hands of criminals forever.

For example, in March, a 55-year-old woman told police she received a call at work from someone claiming to be a sergeant with the local sheriff’s office.

The scammers told her she had missed a jury trial and had two warrants for her arrest, among other false claims.

The woman was then told she needed to go to the bank to withdraw money to serve the warrant. “The victim was instructed to deposit money into a local Bitcoin machine and did so before realizing it was a scam,” according to the police report.

Consumer watchdog groups say consumers have become more willing to report losses due to fraud in recent years. As scams increase across the country, perhaps people are becoming less aware that they are actually the only ones losing their hard-earned cash in this town to fake text messages, fake ads, and scammers.

But some people are losing far more money than you can imagine.

Some people lose more than $100,000 to fraud

Unfortunately, some people are losing large chunks of their retirement nest eggs due to ongoing and sophisticated fraud.

Greisman said the spike in losses could also be due to “a surge in consumers reporting large losses of $100,000 or more.”

According to the FTC, in 2025, consumers reported the highest total losses from sending money to scammers via bank transactions, followed by cryptocurrencies. Credit card payments were most commonly identified in fraud reports.

Greisman said reported fraud losses represent only a fraction of actual losses because not all consumers who lose money to fraud report it to the FTC or one of the FTC’s many data sources.

The FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network includes reports the FTC receives from approximately 180 data sources, including other government agencies, industry members, and consumer organizations.

The FTC estimates that the total cost of fraud to consumers in 2024 could reach $195.9 billion, accounting for underreporting.

The FTC said it is working with international trade organizations to track down fraudsters based overseas. Many efforts include targeting U.S.-based companies and others that illegally facilitate fraudulent fraud schemes.

For example, the FTC filed a law enforcement settlement last year against Paddle, a British payment processing company that operates in the United States through a U.S. subsidiary. According to the FTC, Paddle was involved in collecting payments on behalf of an alleged tech support fraudster operating out of Cyprus.

D.C. gay bar hosts bimbofification night inspired by Bryon Noem’s reporting

play

The Washington, D.C., bar wasted no time in capitalizing on the turmoil involving former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s husband, who was implicated in a reported “thugification” scandal.

The District Eagle, a gay bar on U Street, said it “condemns Bryon Noem” for its “Bimbification Kink Night” held on Thursday, April 2nd.

“We saw the report. We read the ‘leaks’,” the bar said in an Instagram post. “Honestly? We’re inspired.”

The promotional image features a man wearing fake breasts and promises a “Double D drink special,” an apparent reference to a photo shared by the Daily Mail of Bryon Noem appearing cross-dressed.

District Eagle bills itself as “the home of D.C.’s perverted community,” and Thursday’s event leaned into political satire by turning controversy into a high-energy performance extravaganza.

The bar advises guests to “step up” in their outfits if they’re feeling sassy, writing that “fake boobs and hot pants are highly encouraged but not required.”

The District Eagle said: “Whether you’re a husband with a secret or just an outrageously big fan, we’ve got stuffing and plenty to make your Thursday night truly amazing.”

What happened to Kristi Noem’s husband?

According to the Daily Mail, Kristi Noem’s husband Bryon Noem often wore fake breasts when chatting with fetish models online.

The women he allegedly spoke to were involved in a “slut-slut” scene, a kinky act or fetish that involves role-playing and transforming into a typical “slut.”

The Daily Mail article includes unidentified photos, audio, and “hundreds of messages” that Brian Noem sent to the models.

A spokesperson for Kristi Noem told the New York Post: “Noem is devastated. Her family has been blindsided by this and is asking for privacy and prayers at this time.”

Brian Noem does not deny the Daily Mail’s allegations.

What is Bimboization?

Bryon Noem, the husband of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, reportedly engaged in fetish role-playing known as bimbofification, according to the Daily Mail.

This subculture has a strong online presence and centers around wearing dresses and over-exaggerating body shapes that are considered hyper-feminine, such as very large breasts, tight or revealing clothing, and bright colors, following the so-called “slut” characters.

March employment data shows a strong recovery. Can graduates of 2026 be hired?

0

play

Last year, recent college graduates sought well-paying jobs in remote locations that aligned with their values. This year, they want jobs.

Monster’s 2026 State of Graduates report found that 89% are concerned that AI will replace entry-level jobs (up from 64% last year) and 67% of graduates would accept a lower-paying job if it offered more job security.

“They don’t want to be ‘last in and first to leave’ a new job,” Monster Career expert Vicky Salemi said, adding that young people are noticing a wave of corporate layoffs. “They really want to feel like they can keep their job long term.”

The April 2 Challenger, Gray, and Christmas report may have confirmed some of their concerns. US employers announced 60,620 layoffs in March, a 25% increase from February, with AI implementation being the main reason for a quarter of the layoffs.

Overall, the U.S. economy added 178,000 jobs in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated on April 3, much more than forecasters expected. This was up from February’s loss of 133,000, which has now been revised downward. Part of the recovery is due to the return of some 31,000 striking Kaiser Permanente health care workers to work in March.

The unemployment rate in March fell to 4.3% from 4.4% in February.

Andrew Stettner, senior director of economic security at the National Employment Law Project, said the report is a positive rebound from February but does not change the overall labor market “narrative.”

“Job creation in the economy is slowing, and it’s especially tough for people who have lost their jobs, been laid off like we saw last year, and young people who have graduated from high school or college,” Stettner said. “Even with this increase, we are still losing an average of about 68,000 jobs per month this year, which is not enough to make up for the actual job losses last year.”

How is the job market for new graduates in the US?

The unemployment rate for college graduates aged 22 to 27 in the fourth quarter of 2025 was 5.7%, up from 5.3% in the previous quarter, according to the latest data released by the New York Fed. The underemployment rate for this age group, which measures the number of graduates employed in jobs that typically do not require a university degree, rose to 42.5% in the fourth quarter, the highest level since 2020.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told Harvard University students on March 30 that while he is “very aware” of the low employment environment young people face amid low job creation and the rise of artificial intelligence, he feels optimistic about the labor market in the long run.

“The unemployment rate is very low, but that doesn’t help when you’re entering a market like that,” Powell said, advising students to “invest the time to really master how to use these new technologies. That should put you in a good position, but there’s no denying that it’s a difficult time to enter the labor market.”

According to the Monster Report, most of the Class of 2026 remains optimistic about finding a job, with 79% saying they think they will find a job within three months. This is down from the 83% of 2025 graduates who thought they would find opportunities soon after graduation.

What about the overall U.S. job market?

Following a year in which the BLS estimated that U.S. employers added only 181,000 jobs through 2025, Powell said changes in immigration policy have reduced both the demand and supply of workers. Uncertainty surrounding AI adoption and fears of an economic recession may be causing some companies to ramp up hiring, but there are still some bright spots.

Private sector employment rose by 62,000 people in March, with payrolls up 4.5% from the same month last year, according to ADP’s April 1 National Employment Report. Labor Department data showed 202,000 people filed unemployment insurance claims for the week ending March 28, down 9,000 from the previous week.

The Challenger report said hiring plans for March increased 157% to 32,826 people from 12,755 in February. Approximately 21% of prospective hires are summer seasonal jobs. The report also found that private employers have announced plans to hire 6% fewer workers in the first months of 2026 than in the same period in 2025.

“Employers are not retreating in a meaningful way, they are moving more cautiously,” Christine Belmonte, president of technology staffing at Planet Group, told USA TODAY. “Hiring cycles are a little longer, expectations are higher, and there’s a clear focus on hiring people who can provide immediate value. The emphasis has shifted from quantity to quality.”

Is the Iran war affecting the job market?

Soaring oil prices due to the Iran war have pushed up gasoline prices and inflation expectations. Nancy Vanden Houten, chief economist at Oxford Economics, said the conflict has made the U.S. labor market “more fragile, but the effects will take time to materialize.”

James McCann, senior economist at Edward Jones, agreed.

“Rising energy prices and uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict may cause companies to scale back hiring efforts and increase layoffs in the most affected sectors,” McCann wrote in a USA TODAY op-ed, adding that the March numbers are likely too early to confirm the impact. “It would take a significant and prolonged increase in energy prices to cause a serious deterioration in the labor market.”

Which industries are hiring?

The auto industry has so far led the pack in hiring plans for 2026, with plans to hire 12,258 workers, according to a report in Challenger magazine. The entertainment and leisure sector will follow suit, with plans to hire 8,261 people.

Following the end of the Kaiser strike, health care resumed its role as a reliable driver of job growth in March. The BLS estimates that 76,000 jobs were added last month. In March, the construction industry added 26,000 jobs, the transportation and warehousing industry added 21,000 jobs, and the social assistance sector added 14,000 jobs.

The federal government cut another 18,000 jobs in March, with employment in the financial activities sector dropping by 15,000.

Employment in other industries, including manufacturing, professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality, was little changed last month, according to the BLS.

Is the movie ‘The Drama’ suitable for all ages? Zendaya’s movie guide

0

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson star in The Drama, a wedding rom-com centered around a twisted secret. But is the movie safe for children and teens to watch?

play

Spoiler alert! The following story contains important details about the drama’s plot twist.

Save the date for the most polarizing film of the year.

“The Drama” (released April 3) is billed as a quirky romantic comedy about a woman named Emma (Zendaya) who reveals a horrifying secret during a wine game with her friends, which causes her to suspect that her fiancé Charlie (Robert Pattinson) is marrying a sociopath. This disturbing revelation is even darker than Zendaya being asked to star in the HBO series “Euphoria,” and is sure to shock fans who have followed the star since her Disney Channel and “Spider-Man” days.

Here’s what parents need to know about “The Drama” and whether it’s safe for kids and teens to watch.

What is the plot twist in the movie “The Drama”?

Written and directed by Christopher Borli (Dream Scenarios), this pitch-black satire follows Emma and Charlie in the week leading up to their wedding. Late one drunken night, she makes the disturbing revelation that when she was 15 years old, she was brutally bullied and planned a school shooting. However, just as Emma is about to carry out the attack, another mass shooting occurs at the local shopping mall, killing a student.

Emma’s upset classmates welcome her, and soon she is recruited into a gun violence prevention group, effectively burying her brutal tendencies. But when Charlie eventually learns about her past, he is forced to question whether he should marry someone who would even consider doing such a terrible thing to her.

What is your evaluation of “The Drama”?

This film is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of Japan for language, sexual content, and some violence.

For what age is ‘The Drama’ suitable?

I have to side with the Film Institute here and advise that you should be over 17 years old to watch this movie. The film deals with very serious subject matter and includes multiple flashbacks to a younger Emma who was physically and verbally bullied during her high school years.

Teenage Emma is shown practicing shooting outside, walking around the house with a rifle, and filming a suicide note. In the video, she used explicit language while listing the names of her classmates and said one female student would die first.

In an earlier scene, Emma’s friend Rachel (Alana Haim) confesses that she once locked her developmentally disabled child in a closet and left him alone, which led to a search party finding him. Charlie eventually gets fed up with Emma as well and decides to cheat on her with his assistant (Haley Benton Gates).

“The Drama” is a creepy, morally complex piece of work that could be titillating for teenagers in a number of ways. If your child is actually going to see a movie, it’s wise for parents to discuss the movie and welcome any questions they may have.

How much sex and nudity does “The Drama” contain?

The sex scene itself is relatively short. The opening montage shows Charlie passionately telling his friend Mike (Mamudouh Ati) how much he loves having sex with Emma, and we see flashes of the couple in the midst of passion.

Later, after learning that Emma was planning a mass shooting, she begins slapping Charlie in the face during sex, and Charlie worries that her violent fantasies will extend to the bedroom. Charlie masturbates and almost has sex with his assistant in his office, but the encounter is hasty and they both remain fully clothed.

Although the image itself is not explicit, at one point Charlie flips through an art book featuring a woman wearing lingerie and holding a gun, and begins imagining Emma in similarly revealing clothing astride a rifle.

Will there be violence in Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Drama’?

Most of the violence is purely spoken, but Charlie has some sort of horrifying stress dream in which Emma is a potential murderer. In one nightmarish scene, her ear begins to bleed midway through dinner. And in another horrifying moment, there is a gruesome shot of dozens of wedding guests covered in blood as bodies litter the ballroom.

There’s also some gallows humor. In one scene played for laughs, Charlie becomes transfixed by how many times the wedding photographer says he’ll “shoot” his family and friends. Later, while taking portraits, Charlie imagines going on a series of dates with Emma, a happy-looking teenager.

When will “The Drama” be released?

“The Drama” is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3rd, but a streaming release date has not yet been announced.

According to CNN, President Donald Trump’s economic approval rating hits a record low

0

In the latest CNN/SSRS poll released April 1, President Donald Trump has the worst approval rating on the economy of any presidential term.

Polls show 31% of Americans approve of President Trump’s economic response, up from 39% in January 2026, but CNN says the drop in support on this issue is even higher among Republicans, especially those under 45.

The poll, conducted between March 26 and March 30 among 1,201 American adults, found that 35% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

How does it compare to President Trump’s overall approval rating? What else did the poll tell us about voters’ views on the economy? Here’s what you need to know.

CNN poll shows gas prices rising as Americans dissatisfied with Iran

The new CNN poll comes as U.S. gas prices average more than $4 a gallon, according to AAA. Before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, low gas prices were a hot topic for the Trump administration, which is facing negative public opinion about the economy overall.

According to a CNN report, the poll found that about two-thirds of Americans said President Trump’s policies have worsened the economic situation, and 27% said they supported Trump’s efforts to tackle inflation.

CNN also reported that 63% of Americans say pump prices are causing financial hardship for their households, with 15% of them saying it is “severe.”

One poll respondent told CNN and the pollster about the most important issue facing the country: “Prices! Everything is too expensive. It’s very difficult to do anything other than work and get home. Going to the grocery store is ridiculous! Between the gas prices and the food prices, we’re poor!”

President Trump addressed concerns about gasoline prices in his address to the nation on April 1, saying that once the conflict ends, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen and prices will fall again.

What is President Trump’s average approval rating?

Here we take a look at several poll aggregators to understand how the CNN/SSRS poll compares to the average number of Trump supporters as of April 2nd.

Netflix’s stock price fell 30%. Here are 3 warning signs for investors:

0

The recent selloff in top streaming stocks is giving investors an opportunity to be more critical about the future of the business.

play

If investors were coming up with a list of the best stocks of the century, there’s no question that Netflix would be it. (NASDAQ: NFLX) You’ll be in that group. It’s definitely one of the most disruptive businesses on the planet. And the company’s share price performance, up an astonishing 22,700% over the past 20 years, proves this point.

However, streaming stocks have fallen 30% since peaking in June 2025. Perhaps the market is losing interest. Here are three red flags that suggest Netflix’s best days are behind it.

1. Netflix is about to make a major acquisition.

On February 26, Netflix walked away from a deal to acquire some assets of Warner Bros. Discovery in what could have been a significant deal with an enterprise value of nearly $83 billion. This was an unusual announcement from Netflix, which has historically avoided large contracts. Instead, we rely on organic growth to expand our revenue and membership base.

But the proposed deal may have been a clear sign that Netflix’s management needs a deeper catalog of content than it can develop internally to sustain the company’s success. And in order to do so, he paid a considerable amount of money and was willing to take on a large amount of debt.

2. Engagement metrics are tricky

It’s no surprise that engagement is an important data point to focus on, as it indicates the value Netflix is providing to its viewers. The streaming platform’s share of daily TV viewing hours in the U.S. rose from 7.5% in Q4 2022 to 8.8% in January 2026, according to Nielsen data. During the same period, the overall streaming market share (excluding Netflix) increased by 54%, from 24.8% to 38.2%. In other words, Netflix is losing its edge in attracting attention within its own market.

And it’s far behind Alphabet’s YouTube. The user-generated video streaming platform captured a 12.5% share of U.S. TV viewing time in January, beating Netflix by 42%.

3. Content costs may continue to rise

After exiting its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix announced it plans to spend $20 billion on content in 2026. Ten years ago, in 2016, it spent $6.9 billion here.

The industry is extremely competitive these days, as a Motley Fool study revealed that 62% of customers think there are too many streaming services on the market. This means there is also competition for content creation and licensing. And now, as Netflix focuses more on live sports and events with a bidding process, there is no doubt that content costs will continue to rise over time, perhaps even higher than expected.

Artemis II Tracker. Latest locations for NASA’s milestone missions

0

See what the next few days hold for NASA astronauts

Four astronauts are in orbit around Earth and will soon be hurtling toward the moon, but first they will test their spacecraft relatively close to home.

While Artemis II orbits Earth, it is 115 miles away at its closest point and about 46,000 miles away at its farthest point. The crew is testing life support systems and practicing Orion’s manual operations and docking abilities. The mission, which successfully launched on April 1 at 6:35 p.m. ET, is the second in a program that will eventually land astronauts on the moon and build a base there.

Here’s what’s going on with Artemis II and what’s next.

Artemis II is headed to the moon as of Thursday, April 2nd at 8pm ET.

Approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes into the mission, Artemis separated from its Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS).

Now that ICPS’s job of propelling Orion is done, its next purpose was to serve as a target for the crew, according to NASA. The crew practiced operating Orion in manual mode, using the ICPS as a stand-in for the spacecraft Orion would dock with on future missions. NASA announced that the mission was a success.

If you can’t see the graphic, click here.

During the manual short-range maneuver, which lasted approximately 70 minutes, the crew guided the spacecraft through a series of controlled entry and exit maneuvers.

Once the test was complete, the crew performed an automatic departure burn to safely retreat from the ICPS. Approximately 15 minutes after separation, ICPS performed its own waste burn and began its path to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up over the Pacific Ocean.

After ICPS returned to Earth and spent more than eight hours in space, the astronauts went to bed. Their rest was interrupted to test the emergency communications system in the farthest part of orbit.

NASA gives permission to send Artemis II to the moon

As the Lunar Injection (TLI) milestone approaches, all eyes will be on Artemis II.

NASA has given the green light for the final major engine burn that will officially move the Orion spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit. The crew will ignite Orion’s main engine and pick up speed for the 230,000-mile journey to the moon. They are expected to move faster than any human in history.

The burn is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at approximately 7:49 p.m., and will last 5 minutes and 51 seconds.

Artemis has faced multiple setbacks due to technical problems, including a hydrogen leak that required the giant rocket to be brought back for repairs. But these are short delays compared to the long wait since the space agency’s last Apollo mission in 1972.

How a Jewish minority and a small island helped win American freedom

0

There were very few Jews in colonial America. However, when choosing sides, they supported the new nation in its fight for freedom.

play

PHILADELPHIA — Josh Perelman said Jews were a huge minority in colonial America. But they played an extraordinary role in the fight for freedom, he added.

Perelman, senior advisor for content and strategic projects at the Weizmann National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, recently gave USA TODAY a tour of the museum in advance of the exhibition “The First Salute,” which opens on April 23. The exhibit focuses on the role of a small Jewish community and a small Caribbean island in the War of Independence effort.

Jews first settled in the New World in 1654, coming from Amsterdam and living in New Amsterdam, the Dutch colony that later became New York City. Some came from Brazil, and while they enjoyed some degree of self-determination while under Dutch rule, when the colony came under Portuguese rule, they decided to leave Brazil rather than face forced conversion to Christianity, persecution, or worse.

Many of America’s early Jewish families had surnames such as López, Rodríguez, and Gomez, which had roots in the Iberian Peninsula, but were expelled from the peninsula in 1492 by order of the Catholic King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I after the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition.

“Just as Isabella and Ferdinand waved goodbye to Christopher Columbus, they waved goodbye to Jews,” Perelman said. “…by driving them out of the country.”

Perelman said Jews, like many before and after them, came to America because they saw it as a land of opportunity, a place to start anew and a place where they could decide their future.

New Amsterdam, old prejudice

“Myths about Jews exist to this day,” Perelman said as he walked up the museum’s steps from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. “But Jews are no different from any other minority. No one is monolithic.”

The Jews who landed in New Amsterdam found that they were not immediately welcomed there. Governor Peter Stuyvesant, a strict Calvinist, considered Jews “hateful enemies and blasphemers” and warned that if Jews were allowed to stay, “the Lutherans and Papists cannot be rejected.”

Jewish leaders and those who valued their skills as merchants and merchants successfully advocated for them to remain in New Amsterdam on the condition that they hold no public worship. Jews were also prohibited from owning real estate, joining the militia, opening shops, and holding public office. They should have taken care of themselves, Perelman said, so they did so by forming their own mutual aid groups and community organizations.

“There was this conflict,” Perelman explained. “Will this new world be a monoculture, or an open society with both diversity and homogeneity?”

Soon there will be a Jewish community in Newport, Rhode Island. Savannah, Georgia. Charleston, South Carolina. Philadelphia, and even New York.

Disputes over the economy lead to war

In the Old World, before the Industrial Revolution, wealth meant owning land, and Jews were relegated to “lower” occupations such as finance, mercantilism, and trading. They brought those skills and connections to the New World, settling in cities with busy ports. Philadelphia had a tradition of Quaker religious tolerance, and New York and Newport were particularly hospitable to Jews.

“In many ways, Jews enjoyed more freedom here than in Europe,” Perelman said, noting that while anti-Semitism was real in America, it was not the violent and vicious anti-Semitism of the Old World. Jews here “felt a greater sense of agency and were able to overcome the situation without fear of violent retaliation.”

Perelman pointed out that the American Revolution began as a series of grievances about taxation, representation, and national self-determination that evolved into loftier ideas about freedom.

“One of the more remarkable aspects of this work is the idea of freedom emerging and living,” he says. “It’s a revolution, it’s revolutionary.”

Islands that helped arm the revolution

St. Eustatius is a small island in the Caribbean that, according to the U.S. Naval Research Institute, served as an “Arsenal Depot of the American Revolutionary War,” an eight-square-mile Dutch outpost that provided a means of escaping the British blockade when war broke out, and ships that carried gunpowder and ammunition to the Continental Army with the aid of Jewish merchants and merchants.

Jewish merchant connections “became invaluable in supplying the Continental Army with gunpowder, munitions, and clothing,” Perelman said. “Their families and trade networks placed them in places like Amsterdam, Paris, and the Caribbean,” but it was important that the colonies lacked a military industry and were thus beyond the reach of British troops.

In 1781, British forces led by General John Vaughan and Admiral George Rodney occupied the island, drawing widespread condemnation as Rodney’s first mission was to imprison, strip and deport all Jewish men on the island, stripping them of their property and exhuming their graves for further plunder. However, Rodney, an avid gambler, remained on the island too long, giving the Americans the opening they needed to get much-needed help from the French.

A plea from General Washington: “Send Chaim Salomon.”

Haim Salomon was born in Poland, but arrived in New York in 1775, joined the Sons of Liberty, founded a stockbroker, and worked with Philadelphia merchant Robert Morris to secure and manage funds for the revolutionary cause. However, Salomon was arrested by the British on suspicion of being a spy.

During his captivity, the polyglot Salomon acted as an interpreter between British and Hessian troops, convincing some of his troops to desert or defect to the American side. Arrested again in 1778, Salomon fled to Philadelphia, where he once again collaborated with Morris to secure funding for the Continental Army and donated much of his personal wealth to the cause. At Yorktown, Congress and General George Washington found themselves short of funds to pay for the troops. Washington told Morris to “send Chaim Salomon,” who raised the money and changed the course of the final battle of the war.

But for all his efforts, Salomon is often ignored in historical writing, writes historian James A. Percoco on Battlefields.org. He died penniless in 1785.

a risk worth taking

American Jews considered their efforts to support the American Revolution “worth the risk,” Perelman said, and for many of them, the risk paid off. As the new nation’s first president, Washington reiterated his guarantee of religious freedom. After visiting Newport in 1790 and meeting with one of the Jewish leaders, Moses Seixas, Washington wrote that the new national government “should give no sanction to prejudice, no support to persecution.”

By leveraging their skills and connections, Jews “joined shoulder to shoulder with[the Founding Fathers]” in the revolutionary cause, including the approximately 100 Jews who fought against the Continental Army.

“Like everyone else, they had to choose between maintaining the status quo and risking their lives and livelihoods for ambitious ideals and an uncertain future,” Perelman said. “Most people in the colonies and the Caribbean believed in those ideals.”

ICE delays releasing key immigration data. How to track it.

0

Throughout 2025 and into the first few weeks of this year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported an increasing number of immigrants in its custody. Then the lights went out.

ICE has delayed releasing critical data that allows the public to track many aspects of immigrant detention since the partial government shutdown began more than six weeks ago, violating a Congressional mandate to release this data twice a month.

The agency last updated its numbers on Feb. 12, just days before a partial shutdown began due to funding from its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security. This has one of the three longest delays between releases.

After previous negotiations broke down, Congressional Republicans on April 1 announced a plan to end the partial shutdown by funding all of DHS except ICE and Border Patrol, but a deal was still not finalized as of April 2.

DHS hasn’t updated some dashboards since President Donald Trump took office in 2025. As such, this data, ICE detention statistics, has become an important tool to see how new immigration enforcement policies are unfolding. This shows how many people are being detained, what kind of facilities they are being held in, and for how long.

“People may be underestimating how useful this ICE detention data is. This is just one part of the larger mystery of how DHS conducts enforcement,” said Ariel Luis Soto, senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute. “But it gives us an important sense of the population of detainees.”

This dataset provides a way to cross-check whether agents are targeting people with no criminal record. It also provides information about detainees to help immigration advocates challenge detention conditions.

USA TODAY combined all of the spreadsheets available on the Wayback Machine going back to 2021 with current data on ICE’s website, as well as several additional datasets, to show how things have changed under the Trump administration and since.

Data reveals ICE is detaining people at record levels. The detention population reached more than 70,000 as of the end of January, an increase of about 80% from a year ago.

But significant changes are occurring, not only in the number of people detained, but also in who is targeted. Illegal border crossing attempts at the U.S.-Mexico border plummeted at the end of the Biden administration and declined further under Trump, but enforcement efforts have shifted domestically.

This means ICE agents are casting a wider net with controversial tactics to meet high arrest quotas, such as arresting people for immigration hearings, workplace raids, and racial profiling.

As a result, the proportion of detainees without criminal records rapidly increased, accounting for approximately 42% of all detainees at the end of the first year of the administration. This number was 6% a year ago. Some of these immigrants are violating only immigration laws, such as overstaying their visas or re-entering the country after being deported, and some are awaiting immigration hearings.

“This used to be our most reliable way to achieve data transparency on ICE detention, but now we have been flying in the dark for a month,” Luis Soto said.

Historically, it has been published approximately every two weeks, with some delays at the end of the year when the final report is produced. Luis Soto said the current delays are significant.

A DHS spokesperson denounced the closure in an emailed statement, saying DHS and ICE “do not have the resources” to release new detention data. The agency did not respond to questions about when it plans to make this dataset or other immigration dashboards it stopped updating before the shutdown. He also did not say whether he would use funding already authorized in President Trump’s signature bill, which gives DHS more than $170 billion.

“When you have a government shutdown, even a partial shutdown like we’re experiencing right now, reporting is delayed,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), the top Democrat on the House subcommittee that oversees funding for the Department of Homeland Security. “Without a funding agreement, these requirements lapse.” Cuellar was pardoned by President Trump in 2025 for federal corruption charges.

Pressure mounted on the administration following the shooting deaths of two Americans in Minnesota, which ultimately led to turmoil at the department, including the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in favor of newly confirmed Markwayne Mullin.

Before going into spring recess, lawmakers were debating a plan to end the government shutdown that began in mid-February, with Democrats demanding reforms to ICE officers before putting money into the parent agency’s annual budget, including requiring masks, banning raids without a judicial warrant and expanding the use of body-worn cameras. Negotiations are continuing in the House and Senate, but no agreement has yet been reached.

Meanwhile, immigration enforcement continues, as President Trump’s signature bill gave ICE about $75 billion in 2025. Much of this funding will likely go towards hiring additional deportees and expanding the detention facility network.

Detaining people’s records requires more facilities to store them. ICE is opening new detention centers across the country. All but five states have one. As of February 5, ICE reported holding immigrants in 220 facilities, roughly double the number at the beginning of 2025. This includes local prisons, which are sometimes used to hold immigrants.

Recently, ICE has been purchasing warehouses around the country and converting them into detention centers, but has yet to actually equip them or detain anyone. The agency has spent more than $1 billion so far, USA TODAY previously reported. Many site plans face community resistance. In one Georgia town, local authorities shut off water and sewage to a warehouse and removed legal barricades. A federal judge has ordered a moratorium on construction at the Maryland site.

Although detention is intended to be non-punitive, advocates and lawyers have criticized conditions in these facilities, including lack of medical care, exposure to extreme heat, and unsanitary conditions.

From January 2025 to March 2026, ICE reported 46 deaths in its custody. Of these, 14 occurred in the first quarter of 2026, which is on track to surpass last year’s death toll. An American Civil Liberties Union report examining deaths over the past few years found that the vast majority could have been prevented with proper medical care.

USA TODAY is tracking all of these numbers as they are released, while also collecting other data. For more information on data such as deaths in custody and deportations, and notes on how it is compiled, check out our new immigration tracker here.

What is W-2? Forms required to declare taxes.

0

play

When your tax filing deadline approaches and you’re in a mad dash to gather all the necessary documents, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the numbers and letters like W-2, W-9, and 1099.

Some forms are pre-filled and designed to be submitted to the IRS. These may arrive in your mailbox or may be sitting in your website’s “Tax Documents” portal, waiting to be downloaded. In theory, you might not need to do anything other than file it with your tax representative if you have one, or document the appropriate amount on your tax return. Other forms require some action on the user’s part.

Here’s an overview.

What is the W-9 used for?

W-9s are typically used by businesses to collect personal identifying information such as social security numbers and tax identification numbers.

A common reason to fill out a W-9 is that you are an independent contractor, freelancer, or gig worker and your income may exceed $600. You may also be asked to fill out a W-9 when opening an interest-bearing bank account or another financial account that provides extra income.

This form will not be sent to the Internal Revenue Service. However, the information you provide on your W-9 will be used to prepare and fill out other forms. Read more.

Is a W-9 the same as a 1099?

The main difference between a W-9 and a 1099 is that you fill out the W-9, whereas the 1099 is filled out by the company or entity making the payment. In most cases, you should receive your 1099 form by the end of January.

The 1099 form is used to report income that is not earned directly through an employer. There are several types of 1099 forms because there are many ways to make money outside of traditional jobs.

Common 1099s displayed: 1099-G, 1099-K, 1099-R, 1099-Div

Some of the most common 1099s you may receive are:

  • 1099-G: Details any state or local tax refunds that are considered income.
  • 1099-K: Summarize your earnings if you earn at least $20,000 and complete at least 200 transactions on third-party payment networks such as Etsy, Airbnb, and Venmo.
  • 1099-R: Report distributions of $10 or more from various types of retirement plans, pensions, annuities, insurance contracts, and similar accounts.
  • 1099-Division: Used by banks and other financial institutions to report dividends and other distributions to taxpayers and the IRS.

What is a W-4? What is it for?

The W-4 is a form you must complete when you work directly for an employer.

It tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck, based on factors such as whether you’re married and filing a joint return, whether you have dependents to claim, and whether you work multiple jobs.

You will usually be asked to fill it out when you start your job. However, if you notice that the amount withheld from your paycheck is significantly different from the amount of taxes you ultimately owe at the end of the year, you may want to double-check your forms.

You should also revisit this if your marital status changes, if you have or adopt a child, or if your employment status changes.

The IRS has a withholding estimator that can help you determine whether a W-4 adjustment is appropriate.

What can I learn from my W-2 form?

A W-2 is a form that employers are required to send by the end of January to document how much you earned working for your employer in the previous year and how much tax was withheld from your paycheck. This form also shows how much you earned from tips and the benefits you received during the year.

If you had more than one job last year, expect to receive a separate W-2 from each employer.

You must include each W-2 form on your tax return. Forms are especially important because they provide proof of how much you earned.

What is a 1040 tax return?

The 1040 is a comprehensive form used to fill out an individual’s income tax return. The two-page document records the different types of income you earned last year, indicates whether you take the standard deduction or itemized deductions, and reports any tax credits you qualify for.

Follow the instructions on the form and crunch the numbers to find out how much tax you owe or how much of a refund you need.

Who fills out Form 5695?

Form 5695 is used to declare eligible residential energy credits. For example, if you installed roof tiles that generate solar energy in 2023, you can use the form to claim a residential clean energy credit.

Importantly, this form does not apply to businesses.

Black Caucus scholarships are racially discriminatory, lawsuit claims

0

play

Anti-affirmative action groups are suing the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, alleging that it illegally discriminates on the basis of race in awarding college scholarships to black students from underfunded schools in majority-black districts.

The lawsuit calls on the Congressional Black Caucus to partner with the foundation as part of a broader effort to overturn affirmative action programs.

“It is neither conscientious nor legal to deny educational opportunities to some young voters and others based on the color of their skin,” the Equal Rights Alliance of America said in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.

At issue is eligibility for the foundation’s CBC Spouse Education Scholarship. The scholarship is limited to black students in districts represented by members of the Congressional Black Caucus, a powerful voting group that promotes equal rights. This program offers scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000. According to the complaint, the scholarships are awarded to 300 applicants each year.

“The Foundation has operated its programs in such a racist manner every year since 1988, awarding more than $11 million exclusively to Black people,” the Equal Rights Alliance of America said in a press release.

Nicole Austin Hillary, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, said the foundation does not comment on pending litigation.

“The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is proud to reaffirm that we are a nonprofit organization founded 50 years ago by original members of the Congressional Black Caucus. We were founded to help open the doors to educational opportunities and training to the next generation of leaders, provide research, and provide public education on emerging policy issues,” Austin-Hillary said in a statement to USA TODAY. “CBCF remains committed to achieving these goals and providing opportunities for all who benefit from our work and programs.”

The Congressional Black Caucus could not be reached for comment.

The scholarship fund is run by 34 wives and husbands of Congressional Black Caucus members, and its internship and fellowship programs have shaped thousands of leaders in government, business, nonprofit and advocacy roles, according to a February blog post on the foundation’s website.

According to the blog post, the scholarships in question are helping Black students navigate an “inequitable education system” at a time when federal investment in education is shrinking.

The Equal Rights Alliance of America is filing the lawsuit on behalf of two students, one Asian and one Hispanic, who are members of Blum’s organization.

The lawsuit also challenges a second eligibility requirement, which requires applicants to live or attend school in a congressional district represented by a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“All qualified students, regardless of race, deserve the same opportunity to compete for this scholarship,” Edward Blum, leader of the Equal Rights Alliance of America, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “It is hoped that this lawsuit will ensure that outcome.”

Blum, who has long worked to end affirmative action and filed numerous legal challenges to race-based preferential treatment, spearheaded the case that led the Supreme Court to rule in 2023 that it is unconstitutional for universities to consider race as a factor in student admissions.

Papa John’s offers carryout specials as gas prices soar

0

play

As gas prices remain high across the U.S. and customers feel financial pressure due to the Iran war, one fast food chain is offering some relief.

Papa John’s is offering customers the opportunity to earn restaurant rewards when ordering carryout that can be applied as a discount on subsequent orders, the pizza chain announced April 2. The program, dubbed “Pizza Miles,” aims to help customers get takeout gas reimbursed through a rewards system.

The program is set to run through the end of this week, so here’s what you need to know about refunds from Papa John’s.

What is Papa John’s new gas program?

Members of the chain’s rewards program, Papa Rewards, can opt-in to Pizza Miles from Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5. Once opted in, members will receive $4 in Papa Dough, Papa John’s redeemable reward currency, when they place a to-go order of $10 or more through the chain’s app or website.

“If you choose takeout, we are choosing to reward you for it,” Lindsey Adams, Papa John’s vice president of customer marketing and media, said in a news release. “Pizza Miles offers our most loyal Papa Rewards members the true value of Papa Dough by simply getting the pizza they already love.”

Customers can join Papa John’s Rewards Program for free by signing up through the Papa John’s app or website. Typically, for every $10 spent, customers earn a $1 Papadeau that can be used toward future orders.

“Papa Daws are valid for 14 days and can be redeemed on future orders through the Papa John’s app, giving fans an easy way to turn today’s ambition into tomorrow’s value,” the news release states.

As gasoline prices soar, other companies also offer discounts

DoorDash also launched a financial relief program in response to soaring gas prices across the United States.

The delivery service’s new program will offer 10% cash back to DoorDashers who fill up on gas, including those with DoorDash cards. Dashers who drive more than 125 miles during their dash will also receive weekly relief payments, the company said in a release.

Dashers eligible for both cashback and relief payments can save between $1.40 and $1.90 per gallon based on mileage while actively completing deliveries within a week, according to the release.

Gasoline prices soar as Iran war continues

The US and Israel’s war against Iran has put pressure on gas stations since attacks began in late February. Consumers have seen prices rise by $1 over the past month as the US, Israel and Iran enter a new phase in their ongoing war, with oil and gas becoming a key target for both sides.

Much of the pressure stems from Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a 160-mile waterway that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The Strait of Hormuz transports 20% of the world’s oil traffic and approximately 20% of the world’s seaborne liquefied natural gas.

Negotiations continue between Iranian and U.S. officials, with President Donald Trump saying on March 26 that Iranian authorities had allowed 10 “large oil vessels” to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as a show of good faith during back-channel negotiations with the United States. But consumers still find prices high, with the national gas average at $4.081 as of April 2, AAA reports.

California hospice operator defrauded taxpayers of millions of dollars with false claims

0

play

Prosecutors announced April 2 the arrest of eight people suspected of running a series of health care fraud schemes that defrauded Medicare and other insurance companies of tens of millions of dollars across Southern California.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri said eight defendants, including three nurses, a chiropractor and a psychologist, were charged in separate cases with defrauding the health care system of more than $50 million. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the arrests were made in conjunction with a federal task force created as part of President Donald Trump’s “war on fraud.”

Prosecutors alleged that the defendants engaged in various schemes to exploit union health benefits and hospice care programs through fraudulent billing and illegal kickbacks. Prosecutors said five of the cases involved hospice care facilities in multiple cities in Los Angeles County that made false claims to Medicare for patients who were terminally ill and ineligible for services.

One person was arrested in Idaho and one in the Los Angeles area on suspicion of defrauding union health insurance by offering chiropractic services, prosecutors said. Another person in the Los Angeles area was also accused of posing as a nurse and completing fraudulent immigration documents.

In a press conference, Essayri, a Trump appointee, accused California of failing to vet hospice permits when issuing them, calling the state a “kingdom of fraud.” In a statement regarding

“The Trump administration, home to the biggest fraudsters on the planet, is trying to blame California for problems with federal programs,” Newsom said on X. “I’m pleased that just 15 months into President Trump’s presidency, the Federal Reserve is finally getting serious about addressing fraud in the programs it administers.”

In March, President Trump signed an executive order creating a task force led by Vice President J.D. Vance with the goal of proving his claims that federal funds intended for social welfare programs were being stolen in some states. The signed order specifies that the task force will investigate suspected fraud across the country.

At the time, President Trump specifically singled out California in his remarks, saying that there were more fraud allegations in Democratic-led states than in Republican-led states, although he offered no evidence. Fraud experts previously told USA TODAY that these cases are not a question of whether a state is red or blue, but a question of how well states and the federal government can work together.

Suspected Hospice Care Fraud Scheme

Prosecutors argued that the defendants in the hospice care plan operated a facility that “defrauded Medicare by using people who were not terminally ill as beneficiaries.”

“The defendants indicted today allegedly turned hospice care into a cash cow business, costing taxpayers more than $50 million,” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General T. March Bell said in a statement. “The scale of the losses highlights the deliberate abuse of power and trust vested in health care providers.”

The largest case, announced April 2, involved a hospice care company based in Artesia, California, a city in southeast Los Angeles County. Prosecutors accused the owner, a licensed vocational nurse, of using the company to submit more than $9 million in fraudulent hospice claims to Medicare from July 2020 to April 2025. She received more than $8.5 million for these applications.

Prosecutors say the owners billed Medicare for hospice services for patients who were not terminally ill and paid kickbacks for patient referrals. One couple told authorities they were promised $300 a month to enroll in hospice care and received unnecessary items such as energy drinks, non-prescription vitamins and a wheelchair, even though they were not terminally ill.

Other defendants include:

  • A psychologist and his wife, a registered nurse, were arrested on suspicion of defrauding Medicare by paying illegal kickbacks for referrals of patients who did not die. Prosecutors said the couple submitted more than $5.2 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare, and more than $4 million was paid on those claims.
  • Another person indicted is already serving time in a federal prison in Seattle for a previous hospice fraud case, prosecutors said. The husband was arrested as a co-defendant on the morning of April 2nd.
  • A Los Angeles-area certified vocational nurse is accused of using a hospice center to bill more than $3.8 million between January 2022 and September 2025, prosecutors said. She was paid approximately $3.4 million.
  • The CEO and CFO of another Los Angeles-area hospice center, whose enrollment in Medicare was revoked in August 2024, accused them of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Medicare by forging at least one doctor’s signature on Medicare documents.

Which is best for your next project: Empire Today or Lowe’s flooring?

0

If you’re looking to purchase new flooring for your home, you’ve probably considered a national flooring company with competitive pricing, a wide range of products, and an open, ready-to-install inventory. However, many major companies feel the same way, and finding reliable information and reading customer reviews takes time.

That’s why the USA TODAY team did the research on your behalf and compared Empire Today and Lowe’s flooring to help you decide which is the better option for your flooring project.

Empire Today vs. Lowe’s Flooring: Which is Right for You?

Overall, we recommend Lowe’s Flooring as it ranks second on our list of the best flooring contractors. Lowe’s has a much larger service area across the country and offers a wide range of flooring brands as well as its own brands. Empire Today’s service area is about half that size, and no information is provided about the specific brands it serves.

However, one thing to consider is whether you know the type, style, and color of the flooring you want. If so, I recommend Lowe’s. If not, Empire Today might be a better choice. Because one of our representatives will come in for a free consultation and provide you with hundreds of samples to help you choose the best flooring for your space.

Empire Today vs. Lowe’s Flooring Overview

Empire Today and Lowe’s Flooring are both national flooring companies that offer free measurements and free estimates for complete flooring. Because both companies outsource installation work to third-party flooring contractors, both installation quality and customer service can vary.

Empire Today was founded in 1959. After a short period of selling protective plastic covers for floors and furniture, the company shifted its focus exclusively to coordinating flooring and equipment. Lowe’s was founded in 1921, but its primary focus is as a home improvement retailer and only recently began connecting homeowners with flooring service providers.

Empire Today and Lowe’s Flooring: Flooring Types and Costs

Both Empire Today and Lowe’s Flooring offer all the most popular types of flooring, including vinyl, laminate, hardwood/engineered wood, carpet, and tile.

Lowe’s provides the average cost per square foot for each flooring type. This is shown in the table below. Empire Today does not provide pricing information online and must obtain a free quote to confirm pricing.

We looked at customer reviews and homeowner forums to see how much homeowners are paying for Empire flooring so you can compare costs. However, you should obtain an in-house quote for the most accurate price.

Types of flooring Average cost per square foot Estimated cost per square foot
carpet $3.88–$6.62 $2.50–$6.00
Hardwood/artificial wood $2.99–$6.89 $5.50–$12.00+
laminate $1.44–$3.99 $2.50 – $4.50
Luxury vinyl board (LVP) $2.29–$4.29 $3.50 – $6.50
tile $0.99–$3.49 $6.50–$15.00+

Although Lowe’s lists some flooring costs online, keep in mind that these are just averages and do not include installation costs. Actual prices from either company will vary depending on:

  • room size and complexity
  • Unexpected problems with the subfloor
  • Your location and local living costs
  • Additional services you would like (trim, underfloor heating, etc.)
  • The quality and brand of the floor you choose
  • Flooring removal

Empire Today vs. Lowe’s Flooring Installation

The installation process you will experience will be similar, as both are national companies that outsource their installation work to third-party companies. However, there are some subtle differences.

How the estimation process works

Empire Today is known for its door-to-door consulting. During this consultation, a representative will bring hundreds of flooring samples to your home to see how different styles, colors, and materials will look in your space. They will help you choose your flooring, take measurements, and begin creating a quote.

Lowe’s requires you to view flooring samples online before scheduling a measurement. Since this process is less manual, you may not be as confident in the product you choose. Once you have decided on a specific product, schedule a measurement. To learn more about this process, check out our Lowe’s flooring review.

Both companies require materials to be purchased as part of the installation package. You cannot purchase materials in advance and then go to Empire or Lowe’s to install. However, you can also purchase Lowe’s flooring without scheduling installation.

How the installation works

The installation process for both companies works similarly.

  1. Your Empire or Lowe’s representative will use your measurements to provide you with a formal quote.

Empire Today vs. Lowe’s Flooring Review

Reviews for Empire Today are generally positive on sites like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot, with scores of 3.2 stars and 4.3 stars, respectively. The Yelp score is much lower, at just 1.4 stars.

Even more important than the total score is customer sentiment. Many customers seem satisfied with the customer service, quality of installation, and professionalism of the staff assigned to the project. However, some customers have encountered poor installation and customer service issues. Some reviews mention gaps around the flooring, wrong colored products, and issues with the contractor not doing everything that was quoted in the initial quote.

Lowe’s has thousands of reviews on similar sites, but most of them are about the retail side of the business and not specifically related to flooring services. However, a report on Reddit paints a similar picture. While some customers are satisfied with the affordability, professionalism, and quick installation, others encounter customer service issues and installation mistakes that end up costing them more to fix.

Both companies outsource their installation work to third parties, which can lead to differences in service and quality, which is why we review both companies.

Most of Blake Lively’s claims against Justin Baldoni are dismissed by judge

A federal judge in New York has dismissed most of Blake Lively’s sexual harassment and retaliation claims against Justin Baldoni.

Judge Louis Lehman issued a 152-page opinion and order on Thursday, April 2nd. The ruling, obtained by USA TODAY, granted in large part and denied in part a motion for summary judgment by Mr. Baldoni and his co-defendants to avoid a trial scheduled to begin May 18.

The virtual court hearing will take place on the evening of April 2nd.

In a 2024 California complaint that followed a lawsuit later filed in New York federal court, Lively alleged that Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios CEO and “It Ends With Us” producer Jamie Heath engaged in inappropriate conduct in the workplace and then engaged in a retaliatory “social manipulation” smear campaign against the actress.

Lehman admitted three of the 13 legal claims Lively filed against director and co-star Baldoni, including breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting retaliation, and allowed the film to proceed to trial. The remaining claims involve It Ends With Us Movie LLC (breach of contract and retaliation), Baldoni’s production company Wayfarer Studios (retaliation), and The Agency Group PR LLC (aiding and abetting retaliation), which accused Lively of organizing an online campaign to cast Lively in a negative light.

Ten claims were dismissed, including claims related to sexual harassment and defamation.

The sexual harassment claim was dismissed due to jurisdictional issues. Lehman wrote that although Lively filed the lawsuit under California law, the alleged misconduct did not take place in that state.

The legal battle began in late 2024, when Lively filed a California complaint alleging sexual harassment and retaliation by Baldoni and producer Jamie Heath, followed by a lawsuit in New York federal court.

What did the judge say in his dismissal?

Lehman said in the filing that “the relevant considerations overwhelmingly point out” that Lively’s “degree of financial independence” classifies her as an independent contractor rather than an employee. Therefore, he ruled that the actress could not bring a sexual harassment suit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Lehman also stressed that the “social context” of sexual harassment allegations must be assessed based on the context in which the sexual harassment occurred, noting that the two had filmed several romantic scenes together. She confirmed Lively’s claims that Baldoni made kissing gestures to her during filming, kissed her forehead, rubbed his mouth against her neck, put his thumb over her mouth, leaned into her neck and said, “You smell good.”

“Under this framework, it would be difficult to see Mr. Baldoni’s conduct as reflecting gender-based hostility or prejudice,” Liman wrote. “He was acting in the scene. Assuming he was improvising, his conduct did not go far beyond what could reasonably be expected to occur between the two characters during the slow dance scene, giving rise to an inference of hostile treatment based on sex.”

He added: “While these incidents alone cannot support a hostile work environment claim, sexual harassment claims must be evaluated in the totality of the circumstances.”

Justin Baldoni, co-defendant, “grateful” that “case has been narrowed down significantly”

Mr. Baldoni’s co-defendants include producer Mr. Heath, his company Wayfarer Studios, its co-founder Steve Sarowitz, crisis public relations expert Melissa Nathan, and publicist Jennifer Abel.

“We are very pleased that the court dismissed all sexual harassment claims and all claims brought against the individual defendants, including Justin Baldoni, Jamie Heath, Steve Sarowitz, Melissa Nathan, and Jennifer Abel,” defendants’ attorneys Alexandra Shapiro and Jonathan Buck told USA TODAY in a statement.

“These are very serious allegations, and we appreciate the court’s careful consideration of the facts, the law, and the extensive evidence provided,” the statement added. “What remains is a fairly narrowed case, and we look forward to defending the remaining claims in court.”

The defendants previously denied Lively’s claims that they waged a “defamatory ‘smear campaign'” against her.

Rather, the lawyers argued in a Nov. 12 filing that Mr. Baldoni “sought the advice of a crisis public relations firm” simply to “minimize the impact of media reports of increasing efforts to distance Mr. Lively from the film.”

In October, Mr. Lehman entered a final judgment in a $400 million counterclaim from Mr. Baldoni and co-defendants, effectively ending the January 2025 lawsuit against Ms. Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and the New York Times. Parties have the right to appeal.

Blake Lively says she’s looking forward to testifying at trial

One of Lively’s attorneys, Sigrid McCauley, said in a statement that the sexual harassment charges “cannot proceed not because the defendant has done nothing wrong, but because the court has determined that Blake Lively is an independent contractor and not an employee.”

“This case has been, and continues to be, focused on the devastating retaliation and extraordinary steps the defendants took to destroy the reputation of Blake Lively, who stood up for safety on set,” the statement continued. “For Blake Lively, the greatest measure of justice is that the people and schemes behind these coordinated digital attacks are exposed and are already being held accountable by the other women who were targeted.”

“Lively looks forward to testifying at trial and continuing to shine a light on this vicious online retaliation, making it easier to detect and fight,” McCauley said.

This high-profile controversy has involved several other celebrities over the past year and a half, as the stars’ private communications were exposed during the discovery process of Lively and Baldoni’s affair.

The hundreds of exhibits unsealed in January included messages from Taylor Swift, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Seraph of the End star Jenny Slate.

Reese’s founder’s grandson slams Hershey’s ‘classic’ recipe changes

Nearly two months after Mr. H.B. Reese’s grandson accused Mr. Hershey of secretly changing the formulations of various Reese’s products, the company announced it would bring back “a small portion” of the brand’s candies with classic milk chocolate and dark chocolate recipes.

The Hershey Company confirmed the change during its 2026 Investor Day event on March 31st and in a statement to USA TODAY on April 2nd.

The Hershey Company’s chief growth officer, Stacey Taffet, said at a March 31 event that the company is enhancing KitKat recipes to offer customers “creamier chocolate,” and “transitioning our sweets portfolio to colors derived from natural sources to ensure all Hershey and Reese’s products match the brand’s classic milk and dark chocolate recipes.”

The company said in a statement to USA TODAY that these changes should take effect in 2027, adding that the core recipe and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups remain unchanged.

The move comes after Brad Reese, the grandson of Reese’s Candy founder H.B. Reese, wrote an open letter to Hershey in a LinkedIn post on February 14, saying his grandfather created the brand using real milk chocolate and peanut butter and claiming that the chocolate company changed at some point after acquiring the Reese’s brand in the 1960s.

Reese’s brand and identity “has been rewritten not by the storyteller, but by the formulation decision that replaces milk chocolate with a composite coating and peanut butter with peanut butter-like cream,” Reese wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Hershey made some changes to the recipe after hiring CEO Kirk Tanner in August, which the company said were announced publicly through marketing materials and investor events. The chocolate company said it decided to return to classic recipes following a 25% increase in research and development to fund talent, technology and nutritional science.

Below are comments from Hershey Co., Reese’s grandson, and other members of his family.

The Hershey Company says most of its products are already made with classic recipes

Hershey said April 2 that most of its Reese’s products, including Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and classic shapes, are made using classic recipes. Products returned to this recipe represent approximately 3% of the Reese selection.

The company’s popular Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are listed on the package as “milk chocolate and peanut butter,” while other products are listed as containing “peanut butter cream.”

Reese, who has publicly accused Hershey of quietly changing recipes for certain Reese’s products, told USA TODAY on April 2 that he has been a lifelong fan of the candy made by his grandfather. It wasn’t until I tried Reese’s Unwrapped Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream Mini Hearts on Valentine’s Day 2026 that I noticed a difference in the taste of the candy.

“I opened it and there were about two of them in there so I had to spit them out,” he said. “I threw everything inside in the kitchen trash can and kept the pouch. I looked it up and it wasn’t milk chocolate or real peanut butter. This is the first time I’ve ever thrown up a Reese’s product.”

After trying the candy, he was shocked because he couldn’t find an announcement that Hershey would change the chocolate and peanut butter it uses to make Reese’s products. He said customers need to look carefully and try the treats for themselves to find out, adding that instead of describing products as “milk chocolate,” Hershey often uses words and phrases like “chocolatey,” “chocolate covered,” and “made with chocolate.”

Mr. Rees claimed that other products Mr. Hershey had changed include Reese’s Unwrapped Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream Mini Eggs and Cadbury Creme Eggs and Milk Chocolate Eggs.

“If it doesn’t say milk chocolate, that means it’s vegetable oil,” Reese told USA TODAY.

According to Hershey’s ingredient documents, some of the company’s products use vegetable oils. Reese said the change in chocolate formulation caused a chain reaction because the vegetable oil Hershey uses to make its chocolate coating was incompatible with peanut butter. To solve this problem, Reese claims Hershey stopped using real peanut butter and instead used an ingredient called “peanut butter cream.”

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines include two grades of peanut butter: A and B. The agency requires companies to use peanut butter that is “of good color, good consistency, few defects, and good taste and aroma,” with peanut butter scoring at least 90 points for Grade A peanut butter and 80 points for Grade B peanut butter. Products that do not meet these requirements must be labeled differently, according to California’s Riverside County Law Library.

Hershey used “cream” instead of “peanut butter” to avoid using the exact term “peanut butter” as defined by the USDA, the library said.

Brad Reese says Hershey’s return to classic recipes is a ‘PR stunt’

Reese said Hershey’s reputation has been tarnished, even though Hershey has vowed to return to its classic milk chocolate and peanut butter ingredients.

“This is much bigger than people realize,” he said, later adding that the company’s estimated timeline for reversing this change in 2027 “makes no sense at all.”

He said the schedule allows the company to cut corners on materials while still making more profit. Reese said he just wants people to know that they need to pay attention to ingredients when consuming products like Reese’s Cream Candies and other snacks, and that changes may be happening behind the scenes.

“Everyone would think, ‘Oh, my tastes have changed,'” he told USA TODAY. “They think they have a defective product.”

Reese called the recipe reversal, scheduled for 2027, a “PR stunt” and said the company hopes people will forget all about it.

“If it’s true, we’ll deal with it right away because damage is happening every day,” he says.

Reese family says grandson’s comments do not represent them

The Hershey Company sent a statement to USA TODAY on April 2 from the Reese family saying they do not support Brad Reese’s claims.

“His statements and opinions are entirely his own and do not reflect the views or positions of our family,” the family wrote. “We continue to respect the Hershey Company, its leadership, and its long-standing role in our community. We believe that Mr. HB Reese takes great pride in the products produced under his name today and the integrity with which the brand continues to be stewarded.”

Rees’ brother, Andrew Rees, has the right to publish his grandfather’s name, image and likeness. Since Brad Reese began airing his criticisms of Hershey via LinkedIn, Andrew has also reposted them and appears to agree that Hershey changed recipes without notifying customers.

Brad Reese said in an April 2 LinkedIn post that the family’s statement was nothing more than an attempt to “discredit Hershey’s Messenger.”

“Hershey can make all the statements it wants, but until Reese’s ingredients align with Reese’s brand story, it remains public record,” he wrote. “They changed the product on the lease. They got caught. And now they’re trying to manage the perception rather than solve the problem. The chain of evidence doesn’t go away.”

Tiger Woods says he’s ‘talking to the president’ in body camera footage

Body camera footage released Thursday by the Martin County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office shows Tiger Woods talking on the phone as he is approached by police following the rollover crash that led to his arrest last week.

After hanging up, he told the official, “I’m just talking to the president.”

Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after he crawled out of his overturned vehicle following a two-vehicle crash on Jupiter Island just after 2 p.m. ET on March 27.

The golfer was driving his Land Rover northbound at high speed when he overtook a truck towing a trailer containing a pressure washer and ripped out the truck. The speed limit was 30 miles per hour.

It’s not clear whether Woods just got off the phone with President Donald Trump, but Trump sent a message of congratulations to Woods in the hours after the accident.

Asked about Woods, President Trump said: “He’s had some difficulties. There was an accident, that’s all I know.” “He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s a great guy. A great guy. But there are some things that are a little difficult. I don’t want to talk about it.”

A White House representative did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions about Woods’ video released on April 2.

The 50-year-old golfer is dating Vanessa Trump, 48, the ex-wife of President Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. President Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, in 2019.

Woods was released from the Martin County Jail in Stuart, Florida late on March 27th. He was seen leaving the prison through a side entrance in the passenger seat of an SUV.
