Mike Vrabel’s credibility soars as Dianna Russini photo scandal grows

0

play

  • Vrabel announced that he will be leaving the team to spend time with his family.
  • The coach is not expected to face any discipline from the Patriots or the NFL.

Who’s laughing now, Mike Vrabel?

Like millions of people, hey, I’m probably laughing at you as the scandal involving The Athletic’s interactions with former NFL reporter Deanna Russini seems to get more and more despicable by the hour.

What a pathetic story.

When the New York Post first published a photo of Vrabel and Russini looking very cozy at a luxury resort in Sedona, Ariz., before the NFL owners meeting in late March, causing initial shock, the New England Patriots coach proclaimed that it was “ridiculous” to suggest the photo reflected anything more than an innocent interaction.

Then another wave came. And one more thing. The latest photo, dropped by The Post just hours before the NFL Draft began on Thursday, shows the pair drinking at a New York bar in 2020!

Vrabel is currently away from home for treatment and to spend time with his family.

At a half-empty “press conference” Thursday night at Gillette Stadium, someone asked Vrabel to explain how this went from a “funny story” to a need for counseling. He tried to explain his first statement and had the nerve to trumpet the family theme.

“It’s a private, personal matter,” Vrabel said. “I don’t think that comment was correct…I think it was always an attempt to protect your family and I don’t take that lightly.”

Yes, that’s right. “Dismissive” perfectly captures that first statement, but it wasn’t funny at all.

Now, Vrabel has given a different explanation, claiming that “my actions to date have not met the standards that I hold for myself.”

What kind of action? Well, that’s personal and private.

Mike Vrabel’s press conference provides little clarity about absence

As I watched the NFL’s Coach of the Year stumble through a seven-minute session talking about accountability and not wanting to be intrusive, I wasn’t convinced that he wasn’t all that bad about being caught engaging in a “private” situation in a “public” forum. What happened between Vrabel and Russini is not publicly known, although Russini, like Vrabel, is married to another person.

However, it’s now widely known that Vrabel skipped Day 3 of the NFL Draft to spend time with his family. I don’t think the escape will happen in Sedona.

“My family needs me this weekend, and I’m going to be there,” Vrabel said, never mentioning his wife, Jen, by name. They are the parents of two sons.

It’s unclear how long Vrabel will be out. However, it seems that he has no plans to leave the club for a long time. He did not deny reports that he may contact the Patriots on the third day of the draft, including team owner Robert Kraft and Elliott Wolf, who is leading the draft as vice president. And the Patriots did not name a temporary interim player. So maybe they’re thinking he’ll return to rookie minicamp.

Mike Vrabel will not face disciplinary action from NFL Patriots

It is also clear that the NFL has no intention of reviewing Vrabel’s actions based on the league’s personal conduct policy. Sure, it may seem shady, but it would be completely unprecedented for the NFL to go down such a path if no criminal charges were involved.

Still, while Vrabel has continued to work after a spectacular return to New England that culminated in the team’s return to the Super Bowl in his first season, his reputation will never fully recover.

Indeed, he is a keen football mind and a motivational figure for men. His game management strategy is perfect. Perhaps he will eventually lead the Patriots to their first Super Bowl victory without Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

But perhaps this will never go away. Even if Vrabel goes on to have a Hall of Fame coaching career, this episode will still be credited to him in some way. So Belichick, a future Hall of Famer, is definitely paying the price for another black eye in Patriots history: Spygate. And as things stand, it wouldn’t be surprising if more layers of Vrabel’s story were revealed.

Now, there’s a clip that someone posted to X. Russini interviewed Vrabel after he returned to New England and asked him about his wife. In real time, it probably looked very innocent. In retrospect, there is a cruel irony in this.

Vrabel is a coach who has a habit of calling on a veteran female reporter to ask the first question at the beginning of his press conferences. This has long struck me as a pretty cool gesture, as Vrabel described it as a nod to the difficulties women face in male-dominated environments.

And now he’s embroiled in a controversy involving a female reporter who resigned from a high-profile job while The Athletic, a New York Times affiliate, investigated her dealings with Vrabel. That’s also ironic.

As it turns out, Vrabel’s return to Foxboro to replace the one-and-done Jerrod Mayo was an incredible move.

It’s no laughing matter.

More than 200,000 pairs of heated socks sold at Costco have been recalled by authorities after reports of people suffering first- and second-degree burns, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said.

The CPSC’s recall notice, posted Thursday, April 23, said the “32-degree heated socks” could pose a “hazard of injury, including burns,” when users engage in high-intensity activities that combine “heat, excessive friction, moisture, and pressure.”

The 207,000 pairs of recalled socks were sold in Costco stores and online from August 2025 to March 2026 at prices ranging from $30 to $46 per pair. According to the recall notice, the socks were sold in three sizes: medium, large and extra large, and all were black in color.

“Consumers should immediately stop using heated socks and return them to Costco for a full refund,” the CPSC said.

According to the CPSC, 14 “heat-related incidents” were reported, 13 of which involved first- or second-degree burns.

What should customers do?

The CPSC is asking customers with recalled socks to immediately stop using them and return them to Costco for a full refund. Customers who purchased recalled socks online can submit a recall through Costco’s online returns portal.

If you have further questions about the ongoing recall, please contact the 32 Degrees Recall Team at 833-997-2452 or recall@32degrees.com Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

Ringo Starr shares his secret to staying healthy at 85

Ringo Starr has released a new country album, “Long Long Road,” and has more than a dozen tour dates scheduled with an all-star band. The energetic drummer talks about his fitness routine and the set of the Beatles biopic.

play

Ringo Starr gives a friendly lecture on bone and joint health.

“Go to the gym and relax,” he advises. “You can blame me. ‘That apple got me here.'”

The Beatles drummer, famously healthy at 85, still puts together his kit with ease. “There’s no special way. There’s just no one else doing it for you,” says the star, wearing a black track jacket, peace sign necklace and ever-present shades. “You have to get out of bed and do it.”

His new album, Long Long Road, will be released on April 24th and was also co-written and produced by T. Bone Burnett and features guest appearances by Sheryl Crow and St. Vincent. This is Starr’s third country album, following 1970’s Beaucoup of Blues and last year’s Look Up, which he plans to follow up with a tour with his longtime all-star band in May and June.

After the success of his 2025 collaboration with Barnett, “I kind of thought, let’s do another one,” he says. “I sing and play drums. He adds meat to it. And it worked out really well.”

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Question: Do you consider yourself primarily a country artist now, or is it more of a detour?

Ringo Starr: For now, I’m a country artist. I think “artist” is enough, right? We play pop, we play rock, but T-Bone brought us back to country very strongly.

Tour continues until age 86th Birthday (July 7th). Are you going to play as much as physically possible?

No, I plan on playing this year. That’s as far as I’m aiming. We’ll see what happens early next year or at the end of this year. For the past five years, I’ve been telling my kids, “No more. I can’t go on anymore.” (And they say) “Oh, Dad, you said that last year too.” We’re just doing 12 shows. But at least twice a day in my head, I’m (thinking), “Oh, I should do this in September too.” But so far, I’m holding out.

It feels like he and Paul McCartney are in some kind of competition to see who can continue touring the longest.

Well, it may seem that way, but I’m the one who takes the longest (lol).

I think that will happen.

We went to see him perform at the Fonda Theatre. I was happy to see him in such a small venue. The sound was great and he was fine. He is from Liverpool. If you yell at him, he’ll yell back. I’ve seen him in many stadiums. And I really missed contact.

You’ve joked that the secret to great health is blueberries and broccoli. What have you learned over the years about taking care of yourself?

I still see a trainer three times a week. And the gym is right there (points off camera). When she’s not around, I go alone for at least one day, usually two. All you need to do is get your heart rate up, get on the treadmill, and do a little running and weight training. I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I’m like, oh, I should go to the gym.

Paul has released a new song (“Days We Left Behind”) that reminisces about the Beatles. Have your memories of the band changed over time?

No, no, I love that band. I love being on the front line. That’s why I quit Rory (pre-Beatles band Storm and the Hurricanes). But I don’t know why they called.

Are you still surprised by that?

I. yeah yeah. You’ll have to ask Paul, unfortunately only Paul, for now.

Your son Zak Starkey (former The Who drummer) went through a very public career change. As a father, how did you help your son understand what was going on?

I talked to him quite a bit through it. He was just having one of those moments we all experience. You did something not so cool and now I know it. I didn’t know that at the time. I thought Roger (Daltrey) was crazy. Zach wasn’t in a good place, but he’s in a much better place now. I want to let you and others know that he is back to his true self.

Do you think Barry Keoghan, who plays you in the Beatles biopic, looks like you?

In a sense. I have to say yes. you know what i mean? he’s got the job. And then one afternoon, before filming started, he came over. We just hung out and let him get my vibe. And he was a really kind and good person. And he’s a great actor. You can’t doubt it. So I’m going to look nice.

I was lucky because I went to the filming location last summer. And I saw the guys playing John and Paul (Harris Dickinson and Paul Mescal). And they were great. It was the day they were arguing. Oh, that didn’t happen, so I’m waiting for the documentary. That’s where it happened. No, it’s a movie. Leave me alone. It’s hard to talk about it because it means letting go.

Happy 45th wedding anniversary to you and Barbara Bach (April 27th). What does Barbara understand about you that most people don’t?

Well, I’m thinking of everything. She knows how I am. And I know what condition she is in. We are having a great time. And, you know, we lined up. we are doing something like that. And very early on we came to the conclusion that no matter what the circumstances of the day were, nothing would go past midnight. Late at night, okay, that’s it. Please start again the next day.

Wendy’s renews spicy chicken sandwich

Almost a month after Wendy’s announced upgrades to its spicy chicken sandwich, the spring menu will be reduced.

This sandwich features a new marinade, crispy panko-style breading, a new potato bun, and a richer mayonnaise. Wendy’s says the sandwich now also comes with pickles “for extra crunch and balance.”

The change was also applied to the chain’s Classic Chicken Sandwich, for fans who prefer a less spicy sandwich.

Wendy’s said in a news release that it will also offer customers upgrades such as new potato buns across its premium sandwich lineup, including sandwiches such as the Baconator, Dave’s Single, Big Bacon Classic and Asiago Ranch Chicken Club.

Wendy’s said the redesigned sandwich went through “extensive consumer focus groups” and “thorough in-restaurant testing,” and that the changes were inspired by “our fans and everything they love about Wendy’s signature spicy chicken sandwich.”

Redistricting spreads across U.S. map from California to Virginia

0

President Donald Trump’s campaign, seeking to draw new electoral maps and ensure Republican victory in November’s midterm elections, has launched an all-out redistricting war.

It began when the Texas Republican Party introduced new maps of district boundaries aimed at flipping Democratic seats. California responded with a map that could oust Republicans. Republicans held an early lead, but Democrats later gained the upper hand. Mid-decade redistricting was once a rare phenomenon.

On April 21, Virginia voters approved a sweeping redrawing of the state’s House districts, a move that could slow President Donald Trump’s push to expand the Republican majority in the House.

Republicans currently hold a three-seat majority in the House, so any shift in the balance of power could change President Trump’s course. Of course, voters still have to vote.

The current situation of factional power struggles across the country is as follows.

States currently undergoing redistricting in preparation for midterm elections

Republicans could gain up to 5 seats in Texas

The U.S. Supreme Court’s December ruling allowed new maps drawn by Republicans. The ruling was 6-3, overturning a lower court that had found it likely discriminated against minorities.

More than 50 Democrats left the state in protest and temporarily blocked the map’s implementation, but Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ultimately signed it into law last August. The existing 2021 map, also drawn by Republicans, allows the party to already control 25 of the 38 seats.

Missouri could gain one Republican seat

Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe approved new district boundaries in September, splitting Kansas City’s Democratic area and ensuring Republicans have an advantage in all but one of the state’s eight House seats. Some opponents of the measure are trying to force a referendum and others are filing lawsuits.

Republicans could gain up to two seats in Ohio

In October, the Ohio Redistricting Commission, made up of two Democrats and five Republicans, unanimously approved district boundaries that would give Republicans a better chance of flipping two Democratic-held seats. State law required a new map to be drawn in 2026 because the previous map was enacted without a Democratic vote. Republicans control 10 of the state’s 15 House seats.

North Carolina could gain one Republican seat

In October, the Republican majority in the North Carolina General Assembly approved maps targeting Democratic-controlled districts. Republicans could end up controlling 11 of the 14 House seats in battleground states. Democratic Gov. Josh Stein is not involved in the process, per state law.

Republicans could gain up to 5 seats in Florida

A special legislative session convened by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in April will focus on redistricting and could target three to five incumbent Democrats. Such efforts may lack sufficient legal support and would need to overcome legal barriers such as constitutional amendments to prevent partisan mapping.

Mr. DeSantis and Congress approved Republican-friendly maps in 2022, after which Republicans took control of four Democratic-held seats. Republicans currently hold 20 of Florida’s 28 seats.

Indiana redistricting attempt fails

The Republican-controlled Senate issued a rare rebuke to President Trump over his refusal to accept new maps aimed at unseating the state’s only Democratic representative. Republicans hold seven of Indiana’s nine House seats.

Kansas redistricting attempt fails

Republicans withdrew from a Kansas redistricting effort backed by President Trump after Republican House Speaker Dan Hawkins said there was not enough legislative support to overcome a veto from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. Republicans hold three of the four seats in the state House of Representatives.

California could gain up to 5 Democratic seats

Last November, voters overwhelmingly approved a new district backed by Democratic lawmakers and Gov. Gavin Newsom. The new maps were a direct response to Abbott’s Texas redistricting, later approved by the Supreme Court, and were intended to fill up to five Republican-held seats. Democrats currently hold 43 of California’s 52 congressional districts.

Virginia could gain four Democratic seats

On April 21, Virginia voters approved new maps drawn by Democrats for a special election that could flip up to four Republican U.S. House seats. If successful, the reversal could wipe out all but one of the former Dominion’s Republican-leaning districts.

However, the Democratic Party still has challenges remaining. Republicans are pushing back, claiming Democratic lawmakers did not follow the law when approving the referendum. The state Supreme Court has allowed voting to proceed, but could decide to invalidate the referendum.

Democrats hold six of Virginia’s 11 House seats, giving them a potential 10-to-1 advantage in the midterm elections.

Utah could gain one Democratic seat

A Utah judge rejected the Republican map as illegally partisan and upheld an alternative plan that would likely shift one of the four Republican-held seats to Democrats. A federal appeals court panel on Feb. 23 rejected a Republican bid to block the new map, leaving Republicans’ next option with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Maryland’s redistricting efforts stall

On February 2, Democratic lawmakers proposed new district boundaries that would threaten the state’s only Republican-held seat. Democrats hold seven of Maryland’s eight House seats. But Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, said there is not enough support to move forward with a vote on the redistricting bill.

New York state could gain one Democratic seat

Republicans hope the U.S. Supreme Court will block New York State’s Independent Redistricting Commission from redefining the Staten Island district, which could give Democrats the seat in November.

On March 2, the conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court suspended that decision and granted a request by incumbent Republican Nicole Malliotakis.

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul has promised to comply with Texas’ new maps, but New York state will likely block redistricting efforts until after the 2028 election. Democrats hold 19 of New York’s 26 House seats.

What is gerrymandering?

Merriam-Webster defines gerrymandering as: “The dividing (of a territorial unit) into electoral districts to give one political party an electoral majority in many districts while simultaneously concentrating the voting power of the opposition party in as few districts as possible.”

According to the Library of Congress, the term can be traced back to Elbridge Gerry, governor of Massachusetts in 1812. Jerry used his power to push through redistricting plans that kept his party in power. The resulting map looked like a salamander, so boston gazette They called it “gerriemandering.”

Is redistricting the same as gerrymandering?

Redistricting simply refers to the act of redrawing district boundaries based on U.S. Census data. As a state’s population increases, it gains more representatives. If we downsize, we will lose our representatives.

Each state has its own process for redistricting, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. This process typically occurs every 10 years. In most states, the state legislature draws the maps, and the governor has the power to veto them. Some states have established independent commissions to draw the maps to prevent politics from interfering with the process.

Gerrymandering is the process of intentionally redrawing election lines to sway election results in favor of a particular political party.

Republican strategist Karl Rove explained this concept in his 2010 book. wall street journal Column: “Those who control redistricting can control the legislature.”

President Trump told reporters on July 15, “With a very simple reshuffle, we’ll win five seats.”

“Cheer up, Donald Trump. California is bluer because of you,” Newsom said in an Aug. 1 post on the X show.

MrBeast’s company sued by former employee over sexual harassment allegations

0

The production company behind YouTube mogul Mr. Beast is being sued by a former employee who claims she and other female employees were “sexually harassed” and wrongfully fired years later.

Lorraine Mavromatis, who filed the lawsuit in North Carolina federal court on April 22, accuses MrBeastYouTube, LLC and GameChanger 24/7, LLC of firing her in violation of federal law that allows eligible family and eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for medical reasons such as childbirth.

Mavromatis, who was hired by Mr.Beast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) in 2022, said she was fired less than three weeks after returning from maternity leave in 2025 and replaced by a man, according to the complaint obtained by USA TODAY.

The termination also occurred after Mavromatis complained to Mr.Beast’s human resources director about the sexual harassment and hostile work environment she and other women were experiencing, but her claims were ultimately determined to be “unfounded.” Immediately after the 2023 complaint, she was “immediately demoted and transferred to a low-profile position known among Mr.Beast employees as the ‘career-killing’ department,” the complaint alleges.

Beast Industries told The Associated Press that Mavromatis’ lawsuit is an “influence complaint” based on “intentional misrepresentations and materially false statements.” The company said Mavromatis’ position was eliminated when a new head of e-commerce reorganized the team.

USA TODAY reached out to representatives for Beast’s company and the YouTuber for comment on April 23, but did not receive a response.

Here’s what you need to know about a YouTuber’s lawsuit against his company.

Who is Lorraine Mavromatis?

Mavromatis described himself as a “rising star” who had been promoted twice within a year of joining Mr.Beast, according to the complaint. From June 2023 to January 2024, she oversaw operations for MrBeast’s vertical social media division focused on Instagram and managed a team of approximately 20 employees.

The complaint says her trajectory within the company changed after November 2023, when she complained about a “workplace that suffers from a lack of basic employment protections,” including protections for female employees from sexual harassment.

She claims she was treated differently than men and was told to “stay away from Donaldson from an otherwise all-male meeting.” Her complaint also alleges that an unidentified male colleague told her to “shut up” and “stop talking.”

The complaint specifically accuses Mavromatis of telling Mr. Beast that he would only participate in the video shoot if she brought beer, which was a mission to disparage her.

“We will not bow to opportunistic lawyers,” says Beast Industries.

Beast Industries shared a March 31, 2025 exchange on the workplace messaging app Slack with The Associated Press. In it, a colleague told Mavromatis that she “shouldn’t even check” her messages after she canceled a meeting because she wrote, “I was actually in labor in the hospital as we spoke.”

The company shared with news outlets a screenshot of her signature confirming receipt of the employee handbook, which includes the FMLA policy, in response to allegations that Mr. Beast failed to inform her of her rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

“We will not yield to opportunistic lawyers who seek to defraud us of our salaries,” the company said in a statement.

What kind of relief is Mavromatis seeking?

For relief, Mavromatis is seeking a court order requiring Beast Industries to reimburse him for lost wages and benefits, and to reinstate him as chief operating officer of the company’s vertical division or an equivalent position, according to the complaint.

Lowe’s plans to open five stores in these states this year. Please check the location

Lowe’s will open five stores in three states this year featuring the company’s new showroom design, the home improvement chain announced this week.

The five new stores will open in Texas, Kentucky and Florida, according to a news release emailed to USA TODAY.

Based in Mooresville, North Carolina, Lowe’s operates more than 1,750 home improvement stores, 540 branches and 120 distribution centers. Texas and Florida have the highest number of Lowe’s home improvement stores in the nation.

The company said Lowe’s “continues to advance its Total Home strategy in a rapidly growing market,” adding that the brand’s fourth-quarter 2025 same-store sales will increase 1.3%.

Here’s what we know about the new store opening in 2026.

Where will Lowe’s stores open in 2026?

According to information gathered from Lowe’s and the company’s website, the next store is scheduled to open in 2026.

In response to inquiries, Lowe’s did not immediately provide opening dates for the five stores scheduled to open in 2026. But the company said its Port St. Lucie, Fla., store will open in June.

What can customers expect at new Lowe’s stores?

The first store to open this year will be in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and will be the brand’s 133rd store in the Sunshine State. This will be the second Lowe’s in the city. The location also includes a new showroom design with digital signage to display promotional products, more interactive product displays and a new countertop experience with larger slabs where customers can see unique stripes and variations.

“Port St. Lucie is growing rapidly, and we’re excited to support our neighbors and local businesses by providing everything they need for projects large and small,” District Manager Christian Redman said in a news release. “This store is built to provide the value, convenience and service our community has come to expect from Lowe’s.”

The store is the first of five new Lowe’s stores opening across the country this year and will feature a redesigned kitchen and appliance showroom.

New features announced by Lowe’s include:

  • Centralized sales desk for installation and service projects with digital signage showcasing promotional products.
  • Product display with vignettes of areas throughout the home.
  • Signs and QR codes that allow customers to access online products.
  • Links to tools like style quizzes, budget calculators, 3D visualizers, and more.
  • A self-service paint kiosk to streamline paint ordering.
  • Purchase a Pick Up Online Pick Up In Store (BOPIS) zone and get it right away.

The remaining four Lowe’s stores opening this year will also adopt the new showroom design, and a limited number of existing Lowe’s stores will also be upgraded with the new design this year, Lowe’s said in a news release.

US soldiers charged in connection with betting on Maduro attack

A U.S. Army soldier who helped capture a former Venezuelan president won $400,000 in a secret operation, authorities said.

play

A U.S. Army special forces member who helped plan the raid to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been indicted on charges of gambling on a secret operation, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, who was stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina, participated in the Jan. 3 attack and played a role in planning the operation dating back to Dec. 8, according to the Department of Justice. Van Dyke, 38, made a series of bets ahead of the mission and made more than $400,000.

The Justice Department announced on April 23 that the soldier had been indicted on charges related to betting on classified information.

“Prediction markets have no place in exploiting confidential or sensitive information for personal gain,” said Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. “Defendants allegedly violated the trust of the U.S. government by using classified information about sensitive military operations to bet on and profit from the very timing and outcome of those operations. This is clear insider trading and is illegal under federal law.”

“Those tasked with protecting our nation’s secrets have a duty to protect themselves and our service members, and must not use that information for personal financial gain,” Creighton added.

Van Dyke’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Charges against Mr. Van Dyke include wire fraud and violations of the Commodity Exchange Act, a 1936 law that regulates trading markets. If convicted on all charges, the 38-year-old faces up to 40 years in prison.

Maduro, Venezuela’s longtime leader who has long been at war with the United States, was arrested by U.S. forces in the early hours of January 3 and taken to New York City to face criminal charges related to drug trafficking.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the soldier placed about a dozen bets on Polymarket. Polymarket is a prediction market that allows users to bet on everything from the Super Bowl to territorial gains in the Ukraine war.

Prosecutors said Van Dyke’s bets included bets on “U.S. troops being in Venezuela” by a certain date, the likelihood that President Maduro would be removed from office by a certain date, and bets on “whether the United States will invade Venezuela” by January 31st.

USA TODAY previously reported that Polymarket users bet $32,000 related to the attack and won more than $400,000. Van Dyke’s total award amounted to $409,881, according to the Department of Justice.

According to the federal indictment, Van Dyke has served in the military since 2008.

The indictment notes that Van Dyke signed documents agreeing to “never divulge” classified information throughout his military career, including at the beginning of his involvement in the Maduro operation.

“By misappropriating that information and using it to effectuate transactions, Mr. Van Dyke breached his duty of trust and confidentiality to the source of the information and violated certain undertakings made by Mr. Van Dyke to the United States regarding the use of the information,” the indictment states.

According to court documents, the soldier converted his winnings into virtual currency to avoid detection.

A special forces soldier is likely to be the first person to be charged in connection with using classified information to make money in prediction markets.

FBI Director Kash Patel has indicated that the FBI is prepared to go after people who gamble using insider information.

“Permit holders who seek to cash in access or knowledge for personal gain will be held accountable,” Patel said.

Winning bets made in connection with Maduro’s capture drew attention at the time and speculation of insider trading, but other bets on unforeseen events have since been made.

In it, a polymarket user named “Magamiman” won about $553,000 after placing a series of bets on Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei being overthrown, hours before he was killed in a US and Israeli airstrike on Saturday, February 28th.

A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about whether there are other prediction market gambling cases under investigation.

Mike Vrabel has support from Patriots as head coach seeks counseling

0

The New England Patriots “fully support” manager Mike Vrabel and his decision to part ways with the team on the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 25th.

Vrabel told ESPN late Wednesday that he is “committing himself to counseling starting this weekend” amid the controversy involving him and former The Athletic NFL reporter Deanna Russini and the publication of an intimate photo of them in the New York Post.

“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to put his family first, as well as his own well-being,” the team wrote on Thursday, April 23. “Mike has been open about his determination to be the best version of himself for his family, team and fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to live up to that commitment.”

“We are confident in the leadership and communication Mike has established with our personnel staff throughout this pre-draft process. Although he will not be in the facility on Saturday, we know his draft evaluation is complete and Elliott Wolf and his personnel staff are ready to execute the draft as scheduled this weekend.”

The team’s statement comes as the tabloid published more photos early Thursday, which it claims show Vrabel and a woman at a New York City bar more than six years ago. Mr. Vrabel is scheduled to address local media on April 23 at approximately 7:20 p.m. ET.

Mr. Vrabel previously addressed the media on Tuesday, April 21, thanking them for protecting their privacy. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on April 20 that Vrabel is not being investigated for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Vrabel addressed the situation for the first time to reporters at the Patriots’ facility in Foxborough, Mass., on April 21, after issuing a negative statement at the time after the photo from Arizona was first released and saying, “I couldn’t accept a better response.”

“I have had difficult conversations with people who are important to me, including my family, organization, coaches, and players,” Vrabel said in his opening statement.

“They were positive and productive. We believe that to be successful on and off the field, you have to make the right decisions, and that includes me. It starts with me. We never want our actions to have a negative impact on the team. We never want to be a distraction.”

“What I can promise you is that my family, this organization, our team, staff, coaches and most importantly, our fans, will continue to bring the best of me.”

Vrabel said he had a candid conversation with his players as he began the first day of the offseason program, the team’s first formal gathering since losing to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.

On April 7, the New York Post published photos of married couple Vrabel and Russini embracing on the rooftop and lounging poolside in swimsuits at Ambiente in Sedona, Arizona, ahead of the NFL’s annual league meeting in Phoenix. Another photo showed two fingers intertwined.

Russini resigned from The Athletic, a newspaper owned by The New York Times, on April 14. In a letter to editor-in-chief Stephen Ginsburg, Russini wrote that he stands by all of the articles he has published to date. The company initially publicly supported Mr. Russini before announcing that it would continue to review its standards for his work.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to clarify that licensed Star Wars party supplies will not be available at launch. However, licensed Star Wars printed products are available.

Party City emerges from bankruptcy just in time to help families prepare for graduation parties.

The company, which has filed for bankruptcy twice (in 2023 and 2024), now operates more than 700 Staples stores across the U.S., according to an April 21 news release. Shoppers can find Party City on Staples.com, with Party City stores expected to be added to more Staples stores by the end of the year.

Our synergistic partnership allows you to not only find party decorations and costumes, but also signage, invitations, and printed banners in one place. “This partnership with Party City really complemented our print services business, and that’s where the spark came from,” Staples US Retail President Marshall Warkentin told USA TODAY.

Balloons “are a great product to offer along with what we print,” Warkentin said, while party favors for birthdays, graduations and other celebrations supplement Staples’ annual back-to-school foot traffic. “When I got in touch with the folks at Party City a while back, the idea really started to take hold that this could be a great way to connect with customers,” he said.

Some Staples stores began adding Party City locations in August, but the national partnership became official just before graduation season, when graduation-related spending reached an estimated $6.8 billion last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

“Graduation is one of the big seasons for balloons. It’s one of the big seasons for party supplies,” Warkentin said. “So we’ve been building up to this moment.”

Party City store inside Staples ‘continues to grow’

Party City’s licensing agreement allows shoppers to get party supplies, banners, signs and invitations featuring popular Disney and Marvel characters, Warkentin said.

In addition to balloons, he said, “You can also create a Spider-Man invitation and customize it with Johnny’s name and create a customized banner with Spider-Man in your home.” “That’s the key message here, and it’s very exciting.”

Warkentin expects to see more Staples locations to add to the Party City location. There are approximately 900 stores in total. “We are confident that this program will continue to grow,” he said.

To find Party City stores within Staples stores, visit Staples.com.

Party City Finds New Reasons to Celebrate Partnership with Staples

Party City will see many retailers and other businesses close or bankrupt in 2024 and 2025, with some businesses such as Macy’s, Kroger, and Walgreens remaining closed until 2026.

“For as long as we can remember, Party City has been the trusted go-to store for balloons and party supplies known for quality, creativity and celebration,” Joel Weinshanker, CEO of Party City owner Ad Populum, said in an April 21 news release.

Ad Populum acquired Party City in February 2025, adding it to its portfolio of pop culture brands that includes costume companies Rubies and Smiffys. The acquisition follows Party City’s second bankruptcy in December 2024 (revealed from its January 2023 filing in October 2023) and the eventual closure of approximately 700 corporate-owned Party City stores. However, more than 20 franchise-owned stores remained open.

In searching for a way to bring Party City back, “Staples immediately stood out not only for its national footprint, but also for its strong ties to the community that we both have been a part of for years. It felt like a natural fit from the beginning,” Weinshanker said. “Together, we will enable our millions of loyal customers to celebrate and party with confidence at their local Party City (now Staples).”

Staples is owned by private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which acquired Walgreens Boots Alliance in 2025 and also owns apparel company Knitwell Group, whose brands include Chico’s, Ann Taylor, Loft, Talbots and White House Black Market.

Warkentin said customer feedback about the partnership has been positive. “What our customers tell us is, ‘I’m so happy to be able to go find my Party City again,’ and ‘It really makes sense to be in Staples,'” he says.

Party City and Staples deal coincides with graduation

As part of Staples’ new partnership with Party City, you can take advantage of several special deals available in-store and online, including $5 off any party supplies purchase of $25 or more (through May 2nd). Buy 2, get 1 free foil balloon (until June 16th). Get 40% off custom cards, invitations, banners, posters, yard signs, wrapping paper, and photo gifts (through June 13th).

What is the status of RFK Jr.? Here’s why his voice “trembles”

0

play

If you turned on a news channel or scrolled through social media this week, you likely saw a question on the voice of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The secretary’s recent testimony at a Senate hearing has reignited curiosity about his unique speech pattern, which sometimes wavers and pauses. Kennedy spoke at length about the condition that causes his voice to shake, saying on a News Nation broadcast in June 2023 that he began noticing changes in his voice in his 40s, before he was diagnosed with paroxysmal dysphonia.

“Until I was 46, I had a very strong voice. It was unusually strong. Even then, I made much of my income from public speaking,” he said. “In 1996, when I was 42 years old, I suffered from a neurological disorder, or injury, called paroxysmal dysphonia, which caused my voice to shake.”

He continued, “I didn’t know what the problem was at the time. But when I went on TV, people wrote me letters and said, ‘You have paroxysmal dysphonia.'” That makes it a problem for people to listen to me. I can’t hear myself on TV. I will never listen to this broadcast. ”

Kennedy went to Japan in early 2023 in search of treatment, where he underwent what he called a “novel” surgery that left his voice “much better.”

Kennedy is one of thousands of people in the United States alone who suffer from this disorder, which can affect speech on many levels.

Here’s what you need to know about the condition.

What is spasmodic dysphonia?

Spasmodic dysphonia, also known as laryngeal dystonia, is a neurological speech disorder that affects the ability to speak and control the voice. It is considered a “rare” disease and affects about 500,000 people nationwide, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Symptoms usually begin between the ages of 30 and 60 and can include inconsistent changes in the voice that “come and go,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. These are caused by uncontrolled spasm of the vocal cords, affecting the ability to produce consistent sounds.

The vocal cords, or vocal cords, are located inside the larynx, colloquially called the “voice box,” and are located in the throat. As the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) explain, air is normally forced out of the lungs through the folds and vibrates in a controlled pattern to produce sound when we speak.

In spasmodic dysphonia, the area of the brain responsible for involuntary muscle movements, called the basal ganglia, is affected. When that area sends the wrong message to the body, uncontrollable movements called spasms can affect various muscles.

In spasmodic dysphonia, vibrations in the folds in the larynx can cause the folds to connect too tightly or too loosely, which can result in a strained voice or a sound like weak breathing, the Cleveland Clinic explains.

The ’cause’ of spasmodic dysphonia is unknown, but up to one in four people have a family history of the disorder. Women are up to three times more likely to be diagnosed.

According to ASHA, NIDCD, and Cleveland Clinic, there are three types of this disorder:

  • Adductor spasm dysphonia: The most common symptoms are caused by tension in the cord, causing a “strained” or “hoarse” speech.
  • Abductor spasm dysphonia: This is caused by the vocal cords being too loosely connected, resulting in a weak or breathy sound.
  • Mixed spasmodic dysphonia: This is the rarest form of the disorder and combines symptoms of both other types.

Symptoms and treatment of spasmodic dysphonia

The most common symptom of all three types of spasmodic dysphonia is a trembling or “shaky” voice. According to the Cleveland Clinic, other common symptoms vary depending on the type and may include:

  • tense and tight
  • hoarse and raspy voice
  • Breathing, soft, whisper-like sounds
  • It is broken because certain sounds cut out when speaking
  • tremble or tremble

Voice changes can appear quickly, but more often they start slowly or sporadically. According to ASHA and the Cleveland Clinic, stress and fatigue can worsen symptoms, which can be exacerbated by vocal stress, such as speaking to a crowd in a noisy place or on the phone.

Spasmodic dysphonia usually affects only the speaking voice. This means other vocalizations, such as singing, laughing, and whispering, are usually not affected.

The disorder is chronic, meaning it lasts a lifetime, and there is no specific treatment. Common treatments include Botox injections, which block the nerve signals that cause seizures. Speech therapy is often used in conjunction with Botox. and surgical options.

In some cases, people with spasmodic dysphonia may use communication aids or devices that translate text into speech.

Other famous people and celebrities who suffer from spasmodic dysphonia

Kennedy’s battle with paroxysmal dysphonia has come to the forefront since Trump took office, but he is not the only person to share his diagnosis in the public eye.

In 2019, actress Selma Blair noted that her multiple sclerosis causes paroxysmal dysphonia and that her voice was shaking more than usual in an interview with Good Morning America.

Popular NPR radio personality Diane Rehm hosted a news talk show with 3 million weekly listeners from 1979 to 2016, despite being diagnosed with paroxysmal dysphonia in 1998.

Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC fame was diagnosed with the disease in 1997 but went on to have a successful career. He was friends with other musicians such as country singer Johnny Bush, British singer-songwriter Linda Thompson, and singer Jimmie Rodgers.

The late Scott Adams, creator of the comic book series “Dilbert,” similarly spoke to NBC about his diagnosis and recovery in 2006.

Federal authorities are investigating the death and disappearance of a US scientist. See list.

The case spans multiple years and includes a patchwork of people with different backgrounds, circumstances, and connections to classified materials.

play

The highest levels of the federal government are keeping an eye on the list of missing and dead people, some of which may be classified, due to concerns about links to scientific research.

This list includes multiple scientists, spans several years, and includes a patchwork of people from different backgrounds and situations. The White House, multiple federal agencies and lawmakers said they were taking a closer look at a list of about 10 cases to see if they were linked.

The incidents range from the disappearance of a retired Air Force general (authorities previously said there was no evidence of foul play) to the shooting death of an astrophysicist outside his home. The missing construction site supervisor at Los Alamos National Laboratory is also included.

Republican Reps. James Comer and Eric Burlison, who chair the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the Economic Growth, Energy Policy and Regulatory Affairs Subcommittee, said they are investigating cases of missing persons and fatalities who had “access to sensitive U.S. scientific information,” respectively. It is unclear how many people on the list released by lawmakers had such access.

President Donald Trump said the cases could be random.

Trump told reporters last week that he had attended a conference on the topic, saying, “I hope, by coincidence, by coincidence, whatever you want to call it.” “But some of them were very important, so we will look at them in the short term.”

Meanwhile, critics have dismissed the concerns as baseless conspiracy theories. Daniel Ember, editor of The Atlantic, called the panic “incredibly ridiculous.”

Sociologist Robert Bartholomew was also skeptical in a Psychology Today report. The reaction to missing or dead scientists is an example of how the human brain is wired to search for patterns, even when no patterns exist, Bartholomew wrote. There are thousands of nuclear and aerospace scientists in the United States, and people are dying or going missing all the time, he said.

Here’s what we know about the missing and dead scientists.

White House and federal agencies investigate missing scientist case

Reports from various news outlets suggest there is a “possible ominous link” between the deaths and disappearances, Comer and Burlison said in a letter to the heads of the Departments of Energy, the Department of the Army, the FBI and NASA.

“We request information regarding these deaths and disappearances and an explanation of the processes and procedures in place to protect U.S. scientific secrets and ensure the safety of our personnel,” they said in the letter.

NASA is coordinating with agencies investigating the incident, but “nothing associated with NASA suggests a national security threat at this time,” spokeswoman Bethany Stevens said on April 20.

According to Burleson and Comer, the deaths and disappearances began in 2023 with Michael David Hicks. Hicks’ cause of death has not been disclosed. The two most recent ones are from 2026.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said on April 17 that the administration was working with “relevant” agencies and the FBI and said “no stone will be left unturned.” The case came to the attention of government officials after weeks of internet speculation and tabloid coverage.

USA TODAY reached out to the FBI and the Department of Energy, two agencies involved in the investigation.

Who are the people on the list?

Republican lawmakers conducting the investigation listed the names of scientists including McCasland, Hicks and Monica Jacinto Reza, an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Some were mentioned by their affiliation with other scientific institutions. About 10 names were widely reported in tabloids and other news outlets.

Examination of the incident reveals inconsistent connections with scientific research and various research topics.

The following people associated with the U.S. scientific community are currently missing:

  • McCasland, who was 68 at the time of his disappearance, is a retired U.S. Air Force general and former director of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, where he managed science and technology programs. He joined Wright Patterson in 2011 and left in 2013, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network. The base was home to a project to investigate UFO sightings in the 1950s and ’60s. This connection appears to have sparked speculation about his ties to classified information.
  • Reza was 60 years old and director of the Materials Processing Group at the NASA Research Institute at the time of his disappearance. She worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 2022 as a materials and process engineer in JPL’s Thermal, Propulsion, and Materials Engineering Group.
  • Anthony Chavez, who was 78 at the time of his disappearance, previously worked as a construction foreman at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone told USA TODAY. The institute “works with the Department of Energy to support energy advancement and environmental stewardship,” its website says. It also manufactures parts for nuclear weapons.
  • Melissa Casias, who was 58 at the time of her disappearance, also worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, her family told NBC News in July 2025. She used her work email to confirm her employment, according to her LinkedIn page, which says she was an administrative assistant.

The following people connected to scientific research have died in recent years:

  • Hicks, 59, worked at JPL from 2000 to 2022 and was a research scientist focused on the physical properties of asteroids and comets.
  • Professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, was a member of the Department of Nuclear Science, Engineering, and Physics and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He focused on astrophysics and laboratory plasma theory and simulation, according to MIT.
  • Carl Grillmare, 67, was an astrophysicist at the California Institute of Technology. Grillmare’s research included dark matter, galaxy structure, stellar populations and exoplanets, according to the California Institute of Technology. He named some of the stellar streams he discovered.
  • Jason Thomas, 45, was a scientist from Massachusetts who worked in the field of chemical biology at the Novartis Biomedical Research Institute, Wicked Local, part of the USA TODAY network, reported.
  • Frank Maiwald (61) specializes in microwave radiation measurements. He worked at JPL from 2001 until his death in 2024. He contributed to Earth science missions such as the Jason 3 satellite, which measured sea levels to gain insights into surface water and ocean topography and climate change.

The list includes situations ranging from murder to unexplained disappearances.

A review of publicly available information and information provided by law enforcement reveals a wide range of circumstances surrounding the deaths and disappearances. Officials said no foul play was suspected in some of the cases. One death was related to a mass shooting that was widely covered in the news.

McCasland, a retired Air Force general, was last seen at his home in Albuquerque in February. Authorities issued a “Silver Alert,” an advisory used when an elderly person or person with a health or cognitive impairment goes missing, citing an unspecified “medical issue.” Authorities said he had previously experienced “mental fog,” but investigators did not believe he was cognitively impaired at the time of his disappearance. There was no evidence of foul play at the time, and a revolver and other items also appeared to be missing from the residence, they said.

McCasland’s wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, said in a social media post in March that she wanted to “dispel” misinformation. While it is true that her husband once had access to highly classified information, he has been retired for more than a decade and has only had “general” clearance since then.

“It’s hard to imagine that he was taken to extract secrets so old,” she wrote.

In New Mexico, authorities announced in June 2025 that they were looking for Cassias, who was an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Cassius was last seen walking on the highway, and her family said they were confused as to where she went, NBC reported at the time.

Chavez, who worked as a construction foreman at a research institute in Los Alamos, New Mexico, disappeared in May 2025.

Local police chief Sgambelone told USA TODAY: “We have no information linking his disappearance to his work.”

Reza, a JPL engineer, went missing while hiking in Crescenta Valley north of Los Angeles in June 2025, authorities said.

Jason Thomas, 45, is a scientist from Massachusetts who worked in chemical biology at the Novartis Biomedical Research Institute. Thomas went missing in December 2025 and her body was found in a lake on March 17, officials said. Shortly after his parents died, he disappeared from their home, his wife told USA TODAY Network’s Wicked Local. The local district attorney’s office said no foul play was suspected.

In December 2025, Loureiro’s death made national news after authorities revealed that he was suspected of being shot by Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a Portuguese national who killed two people during the Dec. 13 attack at Brown University. Investigators said Valente, who later committed suicide, did not reveal a motive for either shooting in subsequent videos.

Grillmare, an astrophysicist at the California Institute of Technology, was shot to death on the balcony of his rural home in February 2026, ABC 7 and other news outlets reported. The media outlet cited authorities as saying that Freddie Snyder had previously been arrested for trespassing on Grillmare’s property, but that the two did not appear to know each other. Snyder was also charged with a separate carjacking.

The deaths of at least two JPL scientists, Hicks and Maiwald, were not disclosed in their obituaries and could not be confirmed at the time of publication. Hicks’ daughter Julia Hicks told CNN that he suffered from known medical issues before his death on July 30, 2023.

“From what I know about my father, there is no chain of logic that would implicate him in a potential federal investigation,” Julia Hicks said. “I don’t understand the connection between my father’s death and the other missing scientists.”

“I can’t help but laugh about this, but at the same time it’s serious,” Julia Hicks told CNN, adding that she was “upset” by the new attention to her father’s death.

President Trump touts Regeneron drug price agreement aimed at cutting costs

0

play

On April 23, the White House announced a drug price agreement with Regeneron, the last holdout among major pharmaceutical companies that entered into a most-favored-nation pricing agreement with the Trump administration.

Regeneron received a letter from President Donald Trump in July, becoming the 17th major drug company to sign a drug pricing agreement.

In an Oval Office announcement Thursday with Health and Human Services officials and Regeneron executives, President Trump touted the deal as the latest example of his administration’s efforts to lower drug prices for Americans.

President Trump said the 17 drug companies that have agreed to most-favored-nation pricing agreements account for 80% of branded drugs sold in the United States.

“This will result in the largest decline in prescription drug prices in American history,” President Trump said.

As part of the deal, Regeneron will reduce the price of its cholesterol-lowering drug Praluent from $537 to $225. It will be sold on TrumpRx.gov, the federal government’s new drug pricing portal for cash-paying customers.

Regeneron also received Food and Drug Administration approval on April 23 for Otalmeni, a gene therapy drug prescribed to treat a rare type of hearing loss that affects about 50 newborns in the United States each year.

President Trump and company officials said Regeneron initially plans to offer gene therapy for free to eligible patients in the United States. Consumers may pay a portion of the costs charged by their health care provider for the administration of Otarmeni under their insurance plan.

“It’s hard to make it free,” said Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, regarding the starting price of gene therapy.

President Trump has made most-favored-nation status a central part of his administration’s efforts to lower drug prices for consumers.

The administration previously announced deals with 16 of the 17 major drug manufacturers it sent letters to in 2025 seeking price concessions on branded drugs.

The Trump administration has touted these agreements as a benefit for consumers in Oval Office announcements, but has not made public the terms of the voluntary agreements. TrumpRx, the administration’s drug pricing website, listed prices for more than 50 brand-name fertility, insulin, weight-loss, and other drugs as of this month. The website directs cash-paying consumers to coupons that can be used on drug company websites and pharmacies. This site does not process insurance claims.

Oz said in the announcement that 10 million Americans have used the drug pricing portal since it launched earlier this year.

Other consumer websites, such as GoodRx and entrepreneur Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs, offer consumers discounts on prescription drugs. Government drug pricing websites list only brand-name drugs and do not list generic drugs, which are usually cheaper than brand-name drugs.

The Trump administration announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on imported brand-name drugs as part of a sweeping order on April 2.

Pharmaceutical companies that agree to move some of their drug production to the United States and agree to most-favored-nation agreements will not pay tariffs under the order. If a pharmaceutical company moves only production to the United States, it will pay a 20% tariff.

Marie Osmond has opened up about her last moments with her brother Alan Osmond, who passed away on Monday, April 20th at the age of 76.

The singer shared his brother’s last words and revealed that Alan Osmond was looking forward to reuniting with his late brother Wayne Osmond on New Year’s Day 2025.

“The last thing he said to me was, ‘I can’t wait to meet Brother Wayne so we can become missionaries together and begin preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have never had the chance to hear his message of peace and hope in this world,'” the “Paper Roses” singer wrote in a tribute on Instagram the day after his death. “That’s my brother Alan!! I love you so much and will miss you so much.”

Marie Osmond, 66, posted photos from Alan’s life and attempted to encapsulate “years of memories” with her “protective” brother. She recalled the “immense responsibility” Alan was given as leader of the family band when he was 12 years old, his faith and flying the original band, made up of brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay Osmond, to Hawaii for their final performance in 2018.

Marie Osmond added that she felt the excitement of her mother, Olive Osmond, who died in 2004, when she was reunited with Alan. “What a joyful reunion and rebirth took place on the other side,” she wrote. “I know he’s happy.”

Alan Osmond died surrounded by his wife Suzanne and eight sons, a family spokesperson said in a statement to KSL, KUTV and ABC4.

Alan was the oldest member of the Osmond family of entertainers, but brothers George Vaal and Tom Osmond are the oldest siblings overall. The Osmonds began as a four-piece barbershop group in the late 1950s. Brothers Donnie and Jimmy joined the group in the 1970s. Marie Osmond never officially joined the group, instead finding success with her own solo career. She co-hosted the variety show Donnie & Marie with her brother in the late 70s.

President Trump renovates ‘dirty’ reflecting pool on National Mall

Plans for a reflecting pool along the National Mall began after President Trump launched a $400 million plan to build a White House ballroom and Arc de Triomphe on an island in the Potomac River.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced a project to repair the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall after complaints about sewage and foundation leaks.

Trump said the Biden administration had considered replacing the granite in the iconic pool, but did not break ground on the project, which is estimated to cost $301 million and take more than three years.

Instead, Trump said contractors will spend an estimated $1.5 million to sandblast, caulk and resurface the bottom to make it look like an industrial-grade pool, and expect it to be completed in a few weeks.

“We can get better products for a fraction of the cost and time,” President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on April 23 during an event on drug prices.

President Trump is preparing the capital as a showcase for the World Cup soccer games and the nation’s 250 tournaments in June and July.th He also proposes building a $400 million ballroom for the White House and building an Arch of Triumph on an island in the Potomac River.

President Trump referenced the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech in front of a reflecting pool in 1963 to a crowd of 1 million people. President Trump, who said he also gave a speech there during his first term, disputed the crowd estimate of 25,000 and said the audience was probably larger than Dr. King’s audience.

“The audience will be exactly the same, maybe even a little larger,” Trump said.

The reflecting pool was built in 1922. President Trump described it as bizarre. It is 2,200 feet long, 167 feet wide, and approximately 1.5 to 2 feet deep.

President Trump said the granite and other stones used in its construction were not optimal for holding water, like the hundreds of pools he built as a real estate developer.

“It was leaking like a sieve,” Trump said.

The president added that he toured the pool after hearing about the situation from a friend visiting from Germany, who called it “sad.”

“He said the water was filthy, dirty and looked terrible,” Trump said. “It’s not representative of the country.”

When a contractor working on the project asked him what color he wanted the bottom to be, Trump said he suggested “a turquoise color like the Bahamas.” But Trump said the person quickly convinced him to choose a color, and he chose “Stars and Stripes Blue.”

“That’s my favorite color,” Trump said.

BATON ROUGE, LA – One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on Thursday, April 23, in what appears to have started as a fight between two groups, city officials said.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse said one person died at a local hospital, one underwent surgery and three others had minor injuries. Another person was taken to another hospital with “very minor injuries,” he told reporters.

Morse and other city officials previously said 10 people were injured.

Mr Morse said five suspects were in custody, adding that police were still “searching for more people who may have been involved”.

Surveillance camera footage showed the two groups getting into an argument and then starting shooting at each other.

“Unfortunately, there were also innocent people in the area who may have been caught in the crossfire,” Morse said, but added there was no longer a “known threat to the general public.”

“Once the investigation begins for the suspect, we will do everything in our power to do so,” he said. “This appears to be a very targeted disagreement between two groups rather than a random act of violence.”

Around 1:40 p.m. local time, about 20 police cars surrounded a shopping mall southeast of downtown Baton Rouge. The crowd panicked and left the mall. Some stopped and hugged each other, recording the incident on their cellphones.

Police gave witnesses little information and told them to avoid the area because there was a gunman. Officials advised people not to turn around and head toward the mall. An ambulance and fire engine were called to the scene.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he is working with law enforcement to respond to the situation.

“We are aware of a mass shooting at a mall in Louisiana. We are working with law enforcement and will update you as we learn more. Please avoid the area,” Landry wrote in a post on X. “Sharon and I are praying for those affected and appreciate the quick response of law enforcement.”

Witnesses report confusion and fear

FedEx employee Stanley Jackson was on the second floor of the mall when he heard gunshots, believed to be from several types of firearms. Then, he told The Advocate, “everybody started running.”

Jackson saw four people bleeding on the ground, The Advocate reported.

Photographer Laurie Robertson, who was shopping at the mall, said she was on the first floor near the front entrance when she heard the gunshots.

She and other shoppers fled as police cars and ambulances arrived at the scene. “I see everyone and their moms running around the store,” Robertson told The Advocate.

Mayor vows to catch ‘thugs who did this’

Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards promised that law enforcement would arrest those responsible for the violence at the mall.

“We will definitely catch the thugs who did this,” he told reporters at the scene of the shooting. “This doesn’t happen in Baton Rouge. That doesn’t happen. We have full confidence in our law enforcement partners that we’re going to come out and get them and get them off the streets.”

Asked about two tragedies in Louisiana this week, a shooting at a shopping mall and the weekend massacre of eight children in Shreveport, Edwards said people “have a right to be concerned.”

“Sometimes the devil lives everywhere,” he said. “This is one of those situations. No matter how much law enforcement, social programs, etc., if someone decides to do something like this, they’re going to do it. And in that case, sometimes all we can do is react.”

Calci fines Texas candidate for ‘political insider trading’

As Texans headed to the polls to fulfill their civic duty during the 2026 Texas primary, a candidate was fined for trying to cash in on the election.

Calci, a regulated currency and prediction market, announced it would fine and suspend former Texas Republican primary candidate Ezequiel Enriquez for “political insider trading.”

“Just like in traditional financial markets, bad actors will attempt to cheat,” Kalsi said in the release. “These three cases are examples of how developing proactive engineering solutions can help identify illicit trade activity.”

For context, Enriquez was one of three major U.S. political candidates who were found to have exploited their elections and were fined and suspended by Carsi.

Carsi alleges that Enriquez, a candidate for the Republican primary in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, traded in prediction markets during his primary campaign. The amount Mr. Enriquez attempted to trade was not disclosed, but Mr. Carsi said it was a “pretty small amount.”

The platform said it preemptively blocked the traders and launched a full-scale investigation.

“When we contacted the trader, he was fully cooperative with the investigation, admitted to violating the rules, and agreed to settle the case by paying a $784.20 fine and accepting a five-year suspension,” Carsi said in a release.

Enriquez also did not win in the primary and finished 11th, but former MLB player Mark Teixeira, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, won the primary.
