Todd Meadows, a deckhand on the Discovery Channel’s thrill-seeking reality series “Deadliest Catch,” has died. He was 25 years old.

Rick Shelford, the captain of the Aleutian Lady, the crab fishing boat at the center of the series, confirmed Meadow’s death on February 25 in a lengthy social media post, writing: “We lost a brother.”

“Todd was a new member of our crew and quickly became part of the family. His love of fishing and his strong work ethic quickly earned everyone’s respect,” Shelford wrote on Facebook. “His smile was contagious. His laughter, heard across the wheelhouse steps and deck calls, is something we will always have.”

“Todd’s love for children, family, and life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him. At this time, our hearts are broken beyond words,” he continued. “We hold Todd’s children and family in our prayers and keep them in our thoughts as they face the days ahead without him. Todd will forever be a part of this ship, this crew, and this brotherhood. We lost him too soon, but his legacy will live on through his children and in all the memories we have of him.”

Shelford did not confirm Meadows’ cause of death, but said he died while fishing in the Bering Sea, the dangerous strait that separates Alaska and Russia. A GoFundMe has since been set up to raise support for the three sons, raising more than $26,000.

A representative for Warner Bros. Discovery, which airs Deadliest Catch, also confirmed Meadows’ death, saying in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crew, and the entire fishing community at this incredibly difficult time.”

First released in 2005, “Deadliest Catch” follows crab fishermen off the coast of Alaska who overcome life-threatening conditions during an expedition in the Bering Sea. The series follows the lives of fishermen during two major crabbing seasons and documents the dangers they face on deck as their boats are often exposed to waves and strong winds.
