MIAMI — It was clear to Jorge Artias when Cape Verde goalkeeper Vosinha, who made seven saves against Spain in a goalless draw with more than 17 million followers on Instagram, made that impressive performance that is now famous to all soccer fans. He had to bring Voginya kits to people.
Fortunately, Altirs’ company was founded for moments just like this.
Altirs is the founder of Capelli Sport, a New York-based company that supplies jerseys and other gear to Cape Verde. While most teams participating in the World Cup are partnered with Adidas, Nike and Puma, some teams are partnering with smaller brands that may not have the name recognition or recognition of these big names, but can offer a more bespoke experience.
“When it comes to apparel, we can offer the same or better quality than Adidas or Nike. And because we own the supply chain, we can move faster because that’s what we do,” Altils told USA TODAY Sports this week.
So when Vosinha became a global star overnight, the Capelli machine sprung into action and put goalkeeper shirts on the market. It didn’t hit stores the next day, but it was shipped all over the world within a few weeks. — john arnold
