The Fourth of July is here and whether you’re looking to prepare last-minute snacks and snacks for a gathering or looking for a quick bite to eat, consumers have plenty of shopping and dining options on Saturday.
Most national retail stores, grocery stores, and restaurant chains will be open on Independence Day, but banks and post offices will be closed. As Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, the stock market will also be closed on Friday, July 3rd.
The origins of Independence Day date back to July 4, 1776, when the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence.
However, according to the Library of Congress, the annual sightings only became regular after the War of 1812, when events such as the Erie Canal and the groundbreaking of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad began to coincide with Independence Day celebrations. Congress passed a law on June 28, 1870, making Independence Day a federal holiday.

- UPS and FedEx Pickup and delivery service is not available on Independence Day. The company’s website says UPS Store locations may be closed and FedEx business hours will change.
- July 4th is a federal holiday, so most bank branches will be closed. Consumers should check with their local bank branch for specific holiday hours.
Is the stock market open on July 4th?
The U.S. stock market will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, in observance of Independence Day, which falls on a Saturday this year.
The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchanges will close on Friday and reopen on Monday, July 6, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. The U.S. bond market will also be closed on July 3rd, with an early close on Thursday, July 2nd at 2pm ET.
Are grocery stores open on July 4th?

Kroger says on its website that stores will operate as usual. However, pharmacy and clinic hours may vary. Other chain stores such as Walmart, Publix, Food Lion, Whole Foods, and Meijer are also traditionally open on Independence Day. Trader Joe’s announced on its website that all stores will close at 5 p.m. local time on the holiday.
For wholesale clubs, Sam’s Club warehouses open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members and close at 8 p.m., according to the company’s website. According to the company’s website, BJ’s warehouses will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Independence Day.
According to the Costco website, Costco warehouses will be closed on Independence Day.
