Thanksgiving Eve, the eve of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and turkey prep, is known as an unofficial drinking event where friends and family return to their hometowns to celebrate at their favorite local bars.

Before you head out, here’s what you need to know about the celebrations and how to stay safe while celebrating.

What is Blackout Wednesday?

Blackout Wednesday is an unofficial holiday observed the night before Thanksgiving and is often associated with the consumption of alcohol. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the term “blackout” refers to a person’s lapse in memory of events that occurred while intoxicated.

How can I stay safe during Blackout Wednesday?

If you want to participate in this week’s Blackout Wednesday, there’s a safe way to do so, especially if you’re driving to and from your favorite local bar. For the past few years, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned celebrants to remain vigilant during Blackout Wednesday, as high levels of alcohol and large numbers of people traveling could lead to a spike in accidents due to impaired driving ability.

To stay safe, NHTSA recommends a few tips if you’ve been drinking.

  • Before you drink alcohol, designate someone as your sober driver or book a carpool, ride, or taxi service.
  • If you’re hosting a party where alcohol is present, be sure to offer non-alcoholic beverage options and ensure all guests leave with a sober driver.
  • Always wear your seat belt as it is your best defense against drunk driving
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, safely pull over and call the police.
