President Donald Trump attended the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on July 19, and was booed at the trophy presentation ceremony after the game.
After the game, President Trump entered the field with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the World Cup trophy to champion Spain. The crowd booed both players.
According to the Guardian, Trump entered New York/New Jersey Stadium during pregame celebrations and was met with “several boos” when his image briefly appeared on the stadium’s video board after the US national anthem. He was sitting in a suite behind thick glass with officials and family members of Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Earlier in the tournament, President Trump asked Coach Infantino to review the red card given to USMNT’s Folarin Balogun during the United States’ Round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. FIFA has suspended Balogun’s controversial one-match suspension, allowing the star striker to play in the United States’ nightmarish 4-1 loss to Belgium, which eliminated them from the tournament.
Although the president had not attended previous tournament games, he regularly attended sporting events during his second term. He competed in Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, the 2025 Daytona 500, and the 2025 Super Bowl.
