WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has struck Iran with oil sales and new sanctions targeting Hezbollah networks as part of a pressure campaign that hopes the US will further hinder Tehran after a strike at a nuclear site last month.

The US said it would sanction companies and vessels involved in the secret delivery and sale of Iranian oil. It also came across a financial institution that is a militant group supported by Iran and said it was linked to an extremist group that the US designated a terrorist organization.

“As President Trump made it clear, Iran’s actions destroyed it. It had every opportunity to choose peace, but its leader chose extremism,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. “The Ministry of Finance will continue to target Tehran’s revenue streams and strengthen economic pressures to disrupt the regime’s access to financial resources that promote its volatile activities.”

Trump’s administration has spent months trying to convince Tehran to sign a nuclear deal to end Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran in June after five rounds of talks failed to create an agreement. The US military later joined the airstrikes, deploying a bunkerbuster bomb that the Trump administration said had destroyed Tehran’s nuclear sites and its programs by at least a year.

United Nations inspectors were unable to access the nuclear facility. However, its nuclear watchdog head, Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the site appears to be suffering from “severe” rather than “total damage” of the interview with CBS News, which was released on June 28th.

“I don’t believe I’ll return to nuclear soon,” Trump said at a press conference on June 27th. However, if reports of Iran enriching uranium at levels related to him, Trump said he would “unsuspectly” consider bombing the country again.

“They’re exhausted, and Israel is exhausted,” Trump said at another point. “The last thing they’re thinking right now is the core. Do you know what they’re thinking? They’re thinking about what they’re trying to live tomorrow. It’s so confusing. It’s so confusing.

Iran’s UN ambassador to the United Nations later spoke about the country’s “facing its people” not stopping its enrichment programme.
