Tractor Supply Company will close its PetSense stores. See list

Some pet owners may soon have one less place to shop and get their dogs groomed.

Tractor Supply announced in its latest financial report on July 23 that it plans to close “approximately 75” PetSense stores. A company spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY on July 28 that the exact number of closures was 74.

“This was a very difficult decision that we made after deep consideration of our business. Our immediate focus is on the care of our team members affected by these closures,” a spokesperson for PetSense by Tractor Supply said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on July 28.

“We are working hard to redeploy them to other PetSense and Tractor Supply stores where possible,” a spokesperson said, adding that affected stores will remain open during a “reduction process” over the next 10 to 12 weeks.

Why are PetSense stores closing?

“Following a disciplined review of PetSense, we have decided to close approximately 75 underperforming stores. We believe these actions will improve our bottom line, simplify our business, and allow us to direct resources to higher growth and higher profit opportunities,” said CEO Hal Lawton on the earnings call.

What is PetSense? 135 locations remaining

PetSense was founded in 2005 and acquired by Tractor Supply in September 2016, according to a company news release. At the time of the acquisition, PetSense had 136 stores in 23 states. Tractor Supply rebranded its pet-only chain to Petsense by Tractor Supply in August 2022.

As of June 29, PetSense by Tractor Supply had 209 stores in 23 states, according to its financial report. After closing 74 stores, 135 stores will remain.

The company told USA TODAY that customers can continue to use Tractor Supply Stores, Petsense.com, Tractorsupply.com, Allivet Pharmacy and VIP Petcare services where available.
