Nordstrom Family Family makes the chain private
The Nordstrom founding family has secured a contract to make the department store chain private.
The two Nordstrom stores are set to close by the end of the summer amid a wave of closures and reforms across the retail industry.
A Nordstrom spokesperson confirmed that two locations in Santa Monica, California, closures, the other in St. Louis, Missouri, will take place later this year. The company said it would like to move employees at affected stores elsewhere despite the closure.
“We believe that by leveraging our surrounding stores and digital channels, we can best serve our customers in each region,” a spokesman told USA Today. “Decisions like this are never easy. We understand the impact they have on team members. We are committed to caring for our employees throughout this transition, including helping those interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”
The closure comes just after the closure locations of other iconic retailers across the country. Back in March, Macy’s said it would close 150 unproductive stores, and Coles said it would close 27 in the same month.
In May, JCPenney closed seven locations across the country, but last month filed for bankruptcy at home and said it would close 26 “low-performing” stores.
Which Nordstrom stores are closed?
The next store is closed, according to a Nordstrom spokesman.
- 1453 St. Louis Galleria, St. Louis, Missouri – Closed by August 24th
- 20 Broadway in Santa Monica, California – Closed by August 26th
Dick’s House of Sports will replace the Nordstrom closure in St. Louis, Fox 2 reported.
Nordstrom will become private after being acquired for $62.5 billion
Nordstrom is a private company after the $6.25 billion contract was completed in May 2025.

On behalf of my family, I look forward to working with the team to ensure Nordstrom thrives for the future.”
Nordstrom ownership breakdowns are 50.1% by the Nordstrom family and 49.9% by Liverpool, according to a December 2024 news release. According to the retailer’s website, there are over 350 Nordstrom, Nordstrom locals and Nordstrom rack locations.
