ARLINGTON, Texas — After weeks of games and many dramatic moments as teams strive to advance to the next round, the Round of 32 has been decided. From now on, every World Cup match is win or go home.
All three hosts – the United States, Mexico and Canada – passed, but Mexico may have cursed its luck for picking up the toughest opponent of the trio, who will face Ecuador on June 30 in Mexico City.
Several of the tournament’s favorite teams have been drawn into the same quadrant, with France and Germany set to clash in the round of 16. Other teams will enjoy a personally fortunate fate. Defending champions Argentina suffered a shock draw with Round of 32 team Cape Verde in their first match and will face the winner of Australia and Egypt.
The Round of 32 begins on Sunday, June 28th, with Canada and South Africa playing each other, before settling into a three-game-a-day rhythm and ending on July 3rd.
