WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on June 16 agreed to take part in New Jersey’s attempt to investigate Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

The court said the First Choice Women’s Resource Center will use federal court to decide whether the state attorney general can attempt to investigate whether the center believes the woman was misunderstood and offered an abortion.

Attorney General Matthew Platkin is seeking to obtain information about his practices from the Centre, including details about donors and internal communications.

When the first choice went to federal court to prevent it, they were first told they had to fight Platkin’s subpoena in state court.

First Choice’s lawyers argue that the centre is already harmed as state investigations have attracted donations and undermined its ability to promote its services.

Platkin told the Supreme Court there was no evidence of that. And he said the court should not intervene now as the state is still negotiating with the center of information that will be taken over. When that was concluded, he said the state court would consider first-choice claims that the request for the document violates constitutional rights before signing the subpoena.

First Choice’s lawyers said the state attorney general is increasingly using a wide range of investigative powers, including targeting political enemies, and that federal intervention is needed.

Many conservative groups encouraged the Supreme Court to weigh.
