Stephen Colbert has been silent since bidding farewell to “The Late Show” in May. But two months later, he returned to Instagram to share a sweet message for his beloved family.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, July 19, Colbert celebrated his dog Benny’s seventh birthday.
Boykin Spaniel has been featured on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” several times since making his debut as a puppy on the CBS show in December 2019. An excited Benny, wearing a red leash, sat on Colbert’s lap as the crowd chanted “Benny!”
Colbert previously detailed a typical day on set with Benny on a January 2025 episode of The Late Show Pod with Stephen Colbert.
Colbert said Benny “sat in the same chair every time” and “sat like a human being” during rehearsals.
The comedian added that his dog is “watching so intently that it looks like he’s really trying to give me a note, and I hope he does.”
Colbert, a huge J.R.R. Tolkien fan who is writing a new installment of the Lord of the Rings series with his son, has made several public appearances since taking his final bow after 11 years at the Ed Sullivan Theater on May 21.
The day after the final episode of “The Late Show,” he stopped by the Michigan public show as a guest host. That’s because, as he joked, “23 hours of not being on TV was excruciating.”
And in June, Colbert returned to the stage to celebrate the retirement of his wife of 32 years, Evelyn McGee Colbert, as president of the New Jersey nonprofit Montclair Film.
Friends and loved ones who paid tribute to Maggie Colbert included Stephen Colbert, with the former late-night host serenading her with Sam Cooke’s “Bring It on Home to Me.”
