Shopping tips for returning to school

Good morning and happy Friday! This is Betty Lin-Fisher in the consumer-centric Daily Money edition on Friday.

I know it’s still summer so kids definitely don’t want to talk about going back to school. I’m married to a teacher, but he doesn’t want to talk about going back to school either!

However, the back-to-school shopping season is on top of us and starts as early as June for some shoppers. According to the National Retail Federation, more consumers (the economy and tariffs are bothering) began shopping back to school in July.

Shoppers are also pulling back some purchases.

There are ways to save money. If you live in any of the 17 states where there is a tax-free shopping holiday, you can skip paying taxes on certain items.

All participation states vary when holding tax-free holidays, with some states offering a variety of eligible items, while others limiting them to school-related items. In other words, you may still benefit from some states, even if you are not a shopping trip back to school.

New Mexico and Tennessee are spending their sales tax holiday weekends starting today.
